Refractories, called the Hidden Industry by The Refractories Institute, provide the temperature and chemically resistant linings for the multitude of vessels that are used today in high temperature processes ranging from giant iron-making blast furnaces to industrial incinerators to petrochemical cracking units to the smallest furnaces used by the jewelry trade. While these refractory linings are absolutely essential to the proper functioning of these processes, the linings are almost always on the inside of the vessels and thus hidden from the eyes of the public. Refractories are defined in Standard C71 of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), titled "Standard Definitions of Terms Relating to Refractories," as "nonmetallic materials having those chemical and physical properties that make them applicable for structures, or as components of systems, that are exposed to environments above 1 000°F (538°C)." This criterion of ability to withstand exposure to environments above 538OC is the critical distinction separating refractories from other ceramics, fibers, and coatings applicable only at lower temperatures. In addition to resisting temperature, the refractories must with- stand abrasion, chemical and slag attack, resist thermal shock, and carry sustained structural stresses at high operating temperatures for as long as years. The most common methods of classifying refractories are by forming method and composition. First are the traditional formed and fired bricks, batts, and the associated multitude of special shapes. These refractories are usually formed at room temperature, dried, and then fired to high temperatures to develop the final properties desired. Other formed refractories are chemically bonded or resin or tar bonded. To complete the formed refractory matrix, some fired refractory bricks and shapes are subsequently impregnated with resins or tars. Physical dimensions of these formed refractories are classified into two general categories: standard sizes and special shapes. The standard sizes are those in common usage in the United States described in ASTM Standard C909 "Dimensions of a Modular Series of Refractory Brick and Shapes" based on the 38 mm basic module as described in ASTM Standard C861 "Determining Metric Dimensions of Standard Series Refractory Brick and Shapes." The most common size is the "9-inch straight" 228 x 114 x 64 mm (9 x 4 ½ x 2 ½ in.) of the "2 ½ -inch" series or 228 x 114 x 76 mm (9 x 4 ½ x 3 in.) of the "3-inch" series. Bricks of nonstandard sizes are referred to as special shapes. Their use is required in specific furnaces for particular requirements or applications. In addition there is the large and growing group of refractories sold as unshaped mixtures that may be formed into their final shapes at the application site. These unshaped mixtures are sometimes referred to as specialties. The mixtures are prepared to be hydraulically cast, plastic or wet rammed, dry rammed, or dry vibrated into their final shapes. Some are designed to be projected through nozzles (or gunned) onto their forms. The refractory mortars used to lay up the shaped refractories fall into this group referred to as specialties. Prepared refractory grains also are sold. These are usually calcined or fused materials that are subsequently crushed and sized to a variety of specific carefully controlled grain sizes or size distributions. These grains include calcined fire clay, dead burned magnesite, periclase (fused magnesia), dead burned dolomite, kyanite, tabular and fused aluminas, fused zirconia, fused mullite, and calcined alumina-magnesia spinel. The primary composition groups of refractories are the 1) alumino-silicate refractories made largely from fire clay and high- alumina materials, 2) silica refractories made from quartzites and ganisters, and 3) basic refractories from magnesia (or magnesite) and chromia (also referred to as chrome ore), alone and in combination, and dolomite. Special refractories include carbon, zirconia, zircon, high purity alumina, mullite, silicon carbide, silicon nitride, and some borides. In addition there are groups of special insulating refractories.

For achieving bulk economic excavation, large dump trucks are being used in majority of the earth moving operations resulting in high impact shovel loading operations (HISLO) which exposes the operators to high levels of whole body vibrations (WBV). As the truck ages, hydro-pneumatic suspension struts loses their capability to effectively attenuate the vibration. A system is required to monitor and predict the performance of the suspension struts in real time. Machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) has been applied for modeling and predicting the suspension system performance for lighter/smaller vehicles. However, no work has been done to implement machine learning or AI for modelling and predicting the performance of hydro-pneumatic struts in large dump trucks. Therefore, current work is going to be a pioneering effort towards developing machine learning and AI models for solving this problem. Support vector machine (SVM) and regularized dual non-linear regression has been implemented in order to achieve the goal. 3D virtual simulator for CAT793D was used to conduct experiments in MSC.ADMAS environment. The two main recorded outputs were the RMS accelerations in the vertical and horizontal directions at the operator seat for characterizing the performance of the suspension system. During the development and the training of the models, eighty percent (80%) of the total experimental data was used and the remaining 20% was used during the testing and validation of the developed models. SVM model showed the desired accuracy in terms of hydro-pneumatic suspension system performance prediction for large dump trucks. These models can be implemented in the dump truck controller which can then be used to monitor the performance of the suspension system in real-time, and with that proper maintenance and/or replacement can be scheduled by the maintenance personnel. Workplace safety, operator’s health and the overall system efficiency can be greatly improved with an implementation of such an intelligent system. INTRODUCTION Large capacity dump trucks are being employed in any earth moving operation throughout the world for achieving bulk economic excavation [1, 2]. A large dynamic impact force is produced with large capacity shovels dumping material weighing 100 tons or more in to the dump truck under gravity. This dynamic impact force generates high frequency shockwaves which travels throug0068 the truck body, chassis and reaches the operator’s cabin and thus exposes the operator to severe levels of whole body vibrations (WBV). Recommended safe limits have been listed by the International Standards Organization (ISO) in sections 1, 2, 4 and 5 of ISO 2631 (1997, 2003, 2001 and 2004). An operator can got through a long term back, shoulders, arms and neck disability and disorders if exposed to the WBV levels beyond those limits. The dynamic impact force generated as a result of the high impact shovel loading operations (HISLO) was modelled by Ali and Frimpong [2]. Furthermore, the complete methodology for optimizing the dumping process and reducing the impact force has been provided by Ali and Frimpong [1]. The vibration attenuation system present in the dump truck requires improvement in addition to the dumping process optimization. The vibration attenuation system in the dump truck commonly consists of hydro-pneumatic suspension struts. As the dump truck ages, its suspension system deteriorates and therefore loses its capability to effectively attenuate the shockwaves and the resulting vibrations produced by the dumping process. The deterioration tales place due to the contamination of the hydraulic oil or oil and nitrogen mixing or due to the gas accumulator diaphragm rupturing. The monitoring of the output vibration levels can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of any suspension system. MDL Rock Lasers has undertaken successful mapping trials of abandoned mine workings using its underground cavity scanning system. The work was being performed for Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), Australia's largest gold producer. MDL Rock Lasers supplies underground surveying systems to the mining and quarrying industry KCGM's Fimiston Super Pit, located in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, is Australia's largest open-pit gold operation. Fimiston's final pit design is expected to be 3.7 km (2.3 miles) long, 1.5 km (0.9-miles ) wide and 540 m (1,770 ft) deep. During the early days of Australian mining, underground operations were labor intensive. Mining was selective and generally narrow stopes were mostly backfilled. Improved processing technology and mine mechanization during the 1970s and 1980s has permitted larger scale operations to adopt less selective underground-stope operations. The "super pit" concept was a logical step for mining companies working toward economies of scale. However, the industry recognized that there was no precedent for excavating a 500-m- (1,640-ft-) deep open pit through ground previously affected by old workings. To appreciate the geotechnical challenge facing KCGM, it is necessary to consider that under the pro¬posed area at the open pit, stoping reached a level of 1 km (0.6 miles) and was supported by more than 2,000 km (1,240 miles) of development headings. The company was fortunate because plans were available for the Golden Mile underground operations. The existing plans were interpreted by the mine's geotechnical team and computer models were constructed of the underground workings. These models can be imported into three-dimensional mine planning packages, such as the Vulcan's Unix-based software, Envisage, to assist analysis and design. This prior knowledge of the workings provided the focus for investigating and confirming ground conditions using probe drilling. After several iterations of drilling, followed by detailed analysis, several decisions were made relating to the nature of the ground and the mining approach to be taken. It was recognized that the stope models were not perfect due to hu¬man error, lack of original survey information and progressive deterioration in ground conditions. It also became apparent that the sole reliance on probe drilling was inefficient in terms of time and quality of information. This was particularly true in complex areas where stopes are in close proximity. A major concern was the presence of open stopes (voids). In many cases, stopes consist of combinations of filled and void sections. The condition of pillars within these underground workings is extremely important. In time, pillars collapse and voids will propagate in upward and lateral directions. So systems needed to be developed that allowed rapid and accurate verification of ground conditions. KCGM was introduced to MDL Rock Lasers while investigating technology for underground mining. The two companies decided to use the C-ALS, MDL Rock Laser's underground laser, cavity scanning system, to improve the management of mining through affected ground. This system was to be used in conjunction with probe drilling and void mapping activities. A field test in one area of the Fimiston Mine verified the capability of the C-ALS system to quickly and efficiently assist in this decision making process. The C-ALS scanner features lightweight, carbon fi¬ber alignment rods from Measurement Devices Ltd.'s (MDL) Boretrak MKII. This is a borehole deviation system that stops the two axis measurement head rotating and lowers the system down a borehole. The scanner is deployed by a 110-mm (4.3-in.) borehole, up, down or sideways. The operator can then carry out vertical and horizontal plan section scans at any user specified ARC (an angular increment of 2°) or the distance between two points on the ARC (CHORD) increments. Windows '95 software enables the operator to control the cavity scanner remotely, surveying the area in real time. The system makes data quick and convenient.

Overview Coal production in the first half of 1982 remained near the high levels begun in mid-1981. Production then fell sharply during the latter part of the year due to recession-weakened demand. Even so, 1982 coal production was estimated at 756 Mt (833.4 million st), a record high that exceeded 1980's previous production record of 752.7 Mt (829.7 million st). Though 1982 coal production was substantially below industry expectations, the attained production represented a modest achievement in view of the recession's severity. In 1982, the gross national product declined 1.8%, its worst performance in 36 years. The recession, along with mild weather, improved energy efficiency, and conservation efforts caused the nation's energy use to drop 4.1%. With the iron and steel, construction, and auto industries experiencing production declines, industrial energy use fell 10.8%. The extent to which the nation's economic slump affected coal markets in 1982 varied: • total domestic coal use declined 3.4%; • exports remained strong for most of the year; • electric utility coal use declined for the first time in 25 years; • coal use at coke plants declined by one-third; and • coal use in other industrial sectors stayed surprisingly near the 1981 level. Coal Use Domestic coal use totaled 641.8 Mt (707.5 million st) in 1982,22 .9 Mt (25.2 million st) below the 1981 level. Nearly all the decline occurred at coke plants where use dropped to 37.1 Mt (40.9 million st) in 1982 from 55.3 Mt (61 million st) in 1981. The decline in all other industrial and electric utility coal markets was only 5.3 Mt (5.8 million st). Residential and commercial coal use increased 635 kt (700,000 st) to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) from 6.7 Mt (7.4 million st). Power generation decreased 2.3% in 1982, the first year since 1945 that output failed to increase. The decline was due to a drop in industrial demand. Electricity sales to residential, commercial, and other nonindustrial users increased slightly. But coal's competitive position stayed strong. Power generation from oil and natural gas fell 28.9% and 11.7%, respectively. Power generation from coal declined only 0.9%. Among the primary energy sources, coal fueled 53.2% of US electric power generated in 1982, compared with 52.4% in 1981. In 1982, US steel production declined to 66.1 Mt (72.9 million st), the lowest level in 50 years and down from 109.6 Mt (120.8 million st) in 1981. The reduced steel demand forced 13 coke plants to shut down. Coal Exports Coal exports in 1982 totaled 96.4 Mt (106.3 million st), 5.7 Mt (6.3 million st) less than in 1981. Despite the worldwide recession and above normal coal stockpiles in many countries, exports were higher than many expected. This showed the relatively strong US position in international coal trade. The US continued to export near-record coal tonnages despite increasingly competitive influences. These included an improvement in Australia's labor difficulties, the return of Polish coal to Western European markets, and lower oil prices. In 1982, US port facilities were improved and expanded, and more efficient methods for scheduling foreign vessels were implemented. As a result, high volume coal shipments to US ports were routinely loaded and dispatched unhampered by bottlenecks that plagued East Coast ports in 1981. Appalachian coalfield production declined 1.4% from 1981 output and 3.9% from 1980 output. The interior region of the US showed an increase of 7.8% in production. This was primarily because of a

INTRODUCTION Lead and zinc are today rightly regarded as sister metals. Historically, however, they differ markedly with lead being known and in general use as the metal since 3000 BC in several countries which at that time might have been described as mature economies. Zinc was not isolated and recognised as an industrial metal with distinct and valuable properties until about 1700-1800 AD (although it had, of course, been utilised as a constituent of brass for some 2000 years previously). c were well established as industrial metals by the beginning of the 20th century. The present paper briefly reviews the overall growth in world consumption* and changes in the three main areas which today represent the mature economies or industrialised areas, i. e. ,Europe, the United States and Japan. Trends in overall consumption are determined by the demands for the individual uses for lead and zinc. The changes in patterns of use in the industrialised areas - individually and collectively - and reasons for the changes are also considered. LONG TERM TRENDS - 1900-1984 The World Picture Since the beginning of the 20th century the world consumption of lead (3.9 million tonnes in 1984) has grown almost fourfold and that of zinc (4.7 million tonnes in 1984) is almost eleven times greater than it was in 1900. The long-term trend has been one of continuing expansion for both. metals although the pattern has been severely disturbed at certain periods, for example in the years immediately following the two world wars and at times of marked recessions in industrialised areas. Apart from such major setbacks, new levels of consumption have been established regularly every few years. Recently, however, consumption has not really grown and with only a slow and partial recovery in world industrial activity at present, there is no indication that the peak consumptions of 4.2 million tonnes of lead, set in 1979, and 4.8 million tonnes of zinc (1973) will be exceeded in the near future. The growth in world lead and zinc consumption since 1900 is shown in Figure 1 (which includes changes in copper and aluminium for comparison). Overall growth over the period 1900-1984 has been about two percent a year for lead and about three percent for zinc (annual growth for copper has also been about three percent). Increases in tonnage consumption and growth rates by decade for lead and zinc are summarised in Table I. However, the growth rates by decade sometimes conceal very large individual annual increases and decreases. For example, in 1975 lead consumption fell by 13 percent and zinc consumption by 22 percent compared to 1974. In 1976 consumption of lead and zinc rose by 12 percent and 18 percent respectively. The years when consumption 'landmarks' (ie one, two, three and four million tonnes) were first reached are shown on Table 2. Clearly, the pattern of shorter periods being required to attain each extra million tonnes of consumption was broken in the 1970's. The consumption of zinc overtook that of lead for the first time in 1940, and since 1946 has always been at a higher level. Trends in industrialised areas The two key industrialised areas at the beginning of the 20th century were Europe and the United States which between them accounted for some 95 percent of world lead consumption and 98 percent of zinc consumption. Figures 2 and 3 show the growth in lead and zinc consumption, and Figures 4 and 5 the percentage shares for each area since 1900. Europe has usually been the major user of lead except for some years in the 1920fs, most of the 40's and early 50's when consumption in the United States was larger. In 1900, Europe accounted for about 64 percent of world lead consumption and the United States just over 30 percent. Currently, Europe takes about 40 percent of world consumption and the

INRTODUCTION Annual coal production rose to over 1.03 billion st (931 Mt) in 1990. At the same time the number of mines producing this increased tonnage has decreased over 60% in a 30-year period, from 9230 mines in 1960.1 The great increase in production made possible through continued mechanization requires greatly improved loading facilities just to get coal away from the mine. Also the trend to combine production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant continues. A recent census of US coal preparation plants indicated that 310 plants were in operation.2 In addition to increased loading capacity, storage and blending facilities are more necessary both at the producer and user end. In this climate of rapidly changing technology, any written account is faced with the possibility of obsolescence before its appearance. Thus, this chapter seeks to define the common and current practice in coal loading and storage facilities with the full knowledge that this practice is an ever-moving target. FUNDAMENTALS OF COAL STORAGE Storage of coal is becoming an increasingly important part of coal handling systems at mines, particularly since the advent of the unit-train concept in transportation. In order to take advantage of reduced transportation rates on trainload shipments of coal offered by unit-train movement, operators have found that storage is an economic necessity. In unit-train practice, large predetermined quantities must be loaded in relatively short periods of time, as opposed to conventional practice where coal is loaded at a speed dependent on the production capacity of the mine and/or the cleaning capacity of the preparation plant. Clean coal storage is generally practiced in order to accomplish one, or a combination, of the following objectives: 1. To load out promptly and economically. 2. To facilitate blending in order to even out chemical and physical inconsistencies and to prepare desired products or to attain maximum product uniformity. 3. To store certain sizes whose prices and market demand fluctuate with seasons and to permit shipping in good weather. Coal storage, then, is necessary and desirable, both from production and utilization standpoints. There are, however, several undesirable aspects attendant to the storage of coal, the most important of which are oxidation and spontaneous combustion, changes in properties which may affect utilization of the coal, degradation of coal due to rehandling, and the added cost of handling and storage facilities.

The DeLamar Silver Mine is a Joint Venture between Earth Resources Company, the Canadian Superior Mining Company and the Superior Oil Company. The property is a consolidation of several old operations in the district. The more widely known are the DeLamar and Sommercamp Mines. The location is 20 miles northeast of Jordan Valley, Oregon and 55 miles southwest of Boise, Idaho. The mine is on the south slope of DeLamar Mountain in the Owyhee Mountains of southwest Idaho Initial interest started in 1969 with serious exploration beginning in 1970. The feasibility study was completed in 1974, and in 1975 Mountain States Engineers were retained to design and build the plant. Processing of ore began in March of 1977 with the first bullion poured in April of that year. The plant is currently processing some 2200 TPD of ore with a grade of four ounces of silver and 0.03 oz. of gold per ton of ore. Cyanide consumption is 2.5 lb/ton, zinc consumption of 0.3 lb/ton and flocculent consumption of 0.5 lb/ton. A flowsheet is shown as Figure I. The grinding circuit is of two stage design. The primary mill is an 18 ft. dia. by 9 ft. long semi-autogenous unit. The secondary mill is a 9 1/2 ft. dia. by 15 ft. long overflow ball mill. The mill discharges are combined and sent to 15 in. cyclones for classification. Cyclone overflow reports to leaching with the underflows reporting to the ball mill. The cyclone feed pump is an 8X6 metal case pump. The primary mill has 1000 installed horsepower and rotates at 68% of critical speed. The ball mill has 700 installed horsepower and rotates at 72% of critical speed. Because the primary mill is horsepower limited the ball charge is varied to maintain the desired throughput. The mill power is held at 980-990 HP by modifying the feed rate. Four inch forged steel balls are added any time the ore feed fails to reach 100 tons per hour for four hours. During periods of extremely hard ore, the ball charge has been as high as 14 v/o and at other times the mill has operated fully autogenous for weeks.

"The Murum Hydroelectric Project is a 944-MW development consisting of a 145 meter high RCC dam, two 2660 meter long, 9 meter excavated diameter upper pressure tunnels, surge shafts, two 950 meter long 7 even meter OD penstock tunnels and a surface powerhouse. The project is located in the eastern section of the State of Sarawak, Malaysia, about 200 kilometer from Bintulu, in the Rajang Fold-Thrust Belt, an Upper Cretaceous to Upper Eocene fold and thrust belt that extends under most of Sarawak. The Belaga Formation consists of a thick sequence of deep marine sediments currently appearing as steeply dipping strata of thin to thick bedded, fine to medium grained sandstone interbedded with argillaceous rocks, resulting on a “Flysch” type geologic environment. The project pressure tunnels were excavated perpendicularly to these strata resulting on frequent change on rock conditions and behavior, and required rock support. This paper describes the characterization of the rock mass, design of rock support, and incidents during construction. Particularly interesting were convergence issues in Tunnel 1 resulting from Tunnel 2 excavation. INTRODUCTION The Murum Hydroelectric Project is located in the eastern section of the State of Sarawak, Malaysia, about 200 kilometers from Bintulu, and upstream of the Bakun Hydroelectric Project. The project consists of a 145 meter high RCC dam, a 50 meter high intake tower, two nine meter OD and 2660 meter long upper pressure tunnels, two nine meter OD and 175 meter long vertical shafts, two 25 meter diameter and 80 meter deep surge tanks, two seven meter OD and 950 meter long penstock tunnels and four seven meter OD and 50 meter long branch tunnels, two 8 meter diameter to 3.4 meter diameter and 1400 meter long penstocks installed within the shafts, penstock tunnels and branch tunnels ending in a powerhouse with 944 MW installed capacity. LAYOUT OF THE WATERWAY TUNNELS The two waterways tunnels are basically parallel as shown in Figure 1, with each tunnel supplying water to two units in the powerhouse. The tunnels start separated 25 meters center to center, but 250 meter from the intake the separation increases to 35 meters. The tunnels are lined with reinforced concrete until they reach the surge shafts and steel lined from there to the powerhouse. The tunnel profile is shown in Figure 2."

15.1 INTRODUCTION The mine development process, as discussed in Chapter 2, is a series of data gathering and analysis steps. As the mine development process proceeds, information about the geology, mineability, and metallurgy of a particular deposit is continually generated, along with environmental information regarding project permitting status. As data are obtained, checkpoint evaluations are typically conducted to determine the economic viability of the particular deposit. Although the project evaluation process was discussed at length in Chapter 2, a brief review of the process is presented here to "set the stage" for the discussion on economic analysis of heap leach projects. Figure 15.1 (MacKenzie, 1980) presents an overview of the sequential process of mine development. Once the deposit is discovered or acquired, an initial delineation program can be undertaken to expand the project's geologic, mining, and metallurgical data base. At the end of this initial program, the direction of the project is evaluated. The company can either abandon the project, postpone it, develop and mine it, or gather additional data in hopes of improving the project's economic viability. If the company continues gathering data, then another decision point and evaluation will be required. This process may continue until the company either decides to postpone the project or develop and mine it. A project may be postponed indefinitely, typically in hopes of improved metals prices. Certain holding costs, such as land or royalty payments, may be associated with postponement. In general, once a company goes through two evaluations, the project is less likely to be abandoned. For this discussion, it is assumed that the company will undertake initial, second, and third delineation programs to gather sufficient geologic, mining, metallurgical , and environmental data to justify a positive production decision from the second or third economic evaluation. The objectives of the first delineation program will be to confirm and expand upon the available information about the deposit. During the second delineation program, development funds should be directed toward identifying the critical project items (i .e., ore reserves, mineralogy, mineable grade, metallurgical recovery, etc.) that must be resolved before making the production decision. This second economic evaluation can be used to determine which metallurgical concept will be applied to the project: heap leach or a traditional agitation-type leach plant. If the proper work has solved key project concerns in the second program, a production decision may be made from that evaluation.

"Subsea tunnel needs to be built over 50km long to connect between nations and continents. However there are only 19 tunnels longer than 5km in Korea, and there is no history of constructing and operating a tunnel longer than 50km. As the concept of a subsea tunnel, which withstands high water pressure and has an extremely long length is completely different from that of a land tunnel, all kinds of the latest technologies for tunnel construction are required such as survey and analysis of geology, design and construction under high water pressure, ventilation and prevention of disasters within an ultra long tunnel. Therefore, this paper describes the determination of tunnel cross-section under a high speed railway, structural stability, ventilation and fire safety under construction and operation, etc. through the virtual project for the length of 108km subsea tunnel under high water pressure of maximum 20bars from Honam to Jeju island in Korea. 1. INTRODUCTION The Honam-Jeju virtual project is subsea tunnel project to link from Honam(land) to Jeju(island) extending the currently operating Honam high speed railway line, and the same express train(t=18, design speed 350km/h, total train length 200m) operating at Honam line is applied in this project. As Honam-Jeju site is approximately 80km in straight distance with 160m maximum depth, subsea tunnel project should determine the various issues such as air quality/ventilation, aerodynamics, temperature, drainage, fire & life safety, structural stability. Figure 1. is the plan of subsea tunnel, with be constructed using Shield TBM. This double tube-Single track is composed of cross passages (every 350m in general section and 40m in emergency station), service tunnel, pressure relief ducts (every 250m), cross-over tunnels, shafts and emergency stations. 2. ALIGNMENT AND SITE CONDITON This project is planned as an ultra long tunnel of total length more than 105km via existing islands between Honam and Jeju island because straight alignment requires an artificial island which has high cost and construction risk, by deep water depth, though this is the shortest distance (see Fig 2). Water depth and topography in project site is divided into two blocks by Chuja Island. In first block to Chuja Island, depth of the water is 40m on average and maximum 60m, which indicates gradual change of water depth relatively. Also, outcrop bedrock is widely distributed near island."

SCOTT COULTER: Thanks, Eric. Thank you all for coming. Our first speaker today is Claude Bazin. Claude received a degree in metallurgical engineering in 1980 from Laval University in Quebec. He worked for a short time in a mineral processing plant and then returned to Laval to complete graduate studies in the field of process modeling and control. He obtained his master's degree in 1983 and his Ph.D. in 1990. In 1987 he joined Brunswick Mining, New Brunswick, as research metallurgist and subsequently process control engineer. In 1990 he joined Helzfield Mines, New Brunswick, as senior metallurgist. In 1991 he accepted a position of professor at the department of mining and metallurgy at Laval University, a position he is still holding. He's a member of the CIM, TMS, and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration. Claude's topic today is "On-Line Material Balance for Flotation Plants." INTRODUCTION CLAUDE BAZIN: During the last two decades, the on-stream analyzer (OSA) has gained the stat& of key instrument for the control of flotation plants. The OSA is currently used in almost every sulphide flotation plant (Leroux and Franklin 1994), and its application to oxide mineral flotation plants is increasing. The OSA assays are sent to the flotation operators via an operator console or to control loops of various degrees of complexity (McKee 1991) implemented in a distributed control system (DCS). Operators and/or controllers take control actions based on these assays to ensure an adequate operation of the plant. Although this application pays off very rapidly for the purchase of the OSA, one could ask, "Could we get more from the OSA?" Some plants reported the use of OSA measurements for process optimization (McKee 1991). The optimization strategy is based upon economic indices calculated from metal recovery using the 2-product formula (Wills 1992, p. 124). The 2-product formula is sensitive to measurement errors in the assays and can lead to considerable scatter in the calculated indices (Hodouin et al. 1993). Least squares algorithms provide a robust alternative to filter out measurement errors (Spring 1992). This paper presents some applications of a recursive least squares algorithm that provides real-time estimates of the mass flow rates within a flotation plant using OSA and mass flow rate measurements.

The Fortitude skarn near Battle Mountain, NV is currently one of the largest producing gold skarns in the world. It contains about 11 Mt (12 million st) of minable ore grading 5.14 g/t (0.149 oz per st) and is the distal portion of a continuous skarn system in the Copper Canyon area centered on the Eocene Copper Canyon granodiorite porphyry. Calcsilicate compositions, opaque mineralogy, and the high gold grades are atypical of other base metal skarns (iron, Fe; copper, Cu; lead-zinc, Pb-Zn; or tungsten, W). The Copper Canyon skarn is systematically zoned from a garnet (AD 70-100) dominant, pyroxene (HD 20-45) subordinate zone, with major Cu mineralization, adjacent to the intrusive (West ore body), to a pyroxene (HD20-100) dominant, garnet (AD90-100 cores. AD 30-60 rims)subordinate assemblage, with major Au, near the distal marble front (Fortitude ore body). An extensive biotite ± diopsidic pyroxene ± kspar alteration halo surrounds the pyroxene > garnet gold-bearing skarn and represents the early stages of metasomatic alteration. Retrograde alteration is limited in areal extent and intensity, and consists of actinolite, chlorite, quartz, and prehnite. Economic gold mineralization begins in the pyroxene > garnet zone and continues to the marble front, a distance of 1 to 1.5 km (0.6 to 0.9 miles), respectively, from the plutonic contact. The opaque mineralogy in this gold zone includes pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, minor chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, argentite, hessite, hedleyite, volnyskite, and native bismuth and gold. The pyrite-pyrrhotite geothermometer yields temperatures that range from 450° C to 300°C (842° F to 582° F) and the electrum-argentite-sphalerite geothermometer yields temperatures which range from 290°C (554° F) at the marble front to about 420°C (788° F) more proximal to the intrusive. Log fS2 calculations from the sulfide assemblages yield values near - 10 with log fO2 values of about -30, in a solution of near neutral pH (5-6). Calculations of metal solubility suggest that the metals were transported as chloride complexes in the proximal skarn but that bisulfide complexes were predominant within the distal gold skarn. Relatively low oxidation states buffered by the carbonaceous to argilliceous, calcareous protolith and subsequent ferrous iron-rich skarn assemblages appear to have increased the gold carrying capacity of this large hydrothermal system.

During 1992 a number of papers were published on aspects of respiratory disease in US underground coal miners. These included reports on trends in prevalence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis, the risks of developing coal workers' pneumoconiosis in relation to dust exposure, and the relationship between lung disease other than pneumoconiosis and dust exposure. The intent of this paper is to provide a summary of the essential findings from these investigations. PREVALENCE AND INCIDENCE OF COAL WORKERS' PNEUMOCONIOSIS Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) is usually detected in living miners through use of the chest x-ray. Deposits of dust in the lung, and the fibrotic tissue reactions to the dust, are manifested on the x-ray as small and large opacities. These abnormalities are quantified into degrees of severity using a standardized classification scheme (the International Classification of Radiographs of the Pneumoconioses of the International Labour Office). For small opacities, the scheme provides for a four-point scale of abnormality (0, 1, 2, 3), reflecting increasing profusion of the opacities on the x-ray. In this report, category 1 or greater small rounded opacities (CWP 1+) represents the earlier radiographic stages of pneumoconiosis. Large opacities, indicate the later and often disabling stage of pneumoconiosis, usually referred to as progressive massive fibrosis (PMF). Information collected in a national surveillance program for underground coal miners (the Coalworkers' X-ray Surveillance Program (CWXSP)) and a large epidemiologic study (National Study of Coalworkers' Pneumoconiosis (NSCWP)) provide a means to assess trends in CWP prevalence over the years following the reduction in dust levels mandated by the 1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act (FCMHSA). These programs are operated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and are described in detail in Attfield and Althouse (1992) and Attfield and Castellan (1992). Both studies were divided administratively into distinct time periods, and the results shown here reflect that division. Figure 1 shows the prevalence of CWP 1+ as determined from data from the CWXSP, plotted by time period and years in mining. There is evidence of a temporal reduction in prevalence. (The lack of an obvious decline in the early 1970s may be an artifact arising from use of different versions of the standard classification.) Figure 2 provides information in the same format for PMF, and shows a similar trend [ ]

"The Jurassic coal fields which lay in west China are the major energy base and contain half of coal resources in China. Due to the gather and degeneration rules, the spontaneous combustion characteristic of Jurassic coal is distinguished with permo-carboniferous coal, which needs to be studied deeply. Programmed heating experiments of five Jurassic coal samples and three permo-carboniferous coal samples from different primal coal fields in West China were conducted to identify the characteristic parameters in the low temperature stage of oxidation and spontaneous combustion. The experiments were carried out under non-isothermal heating conditions up to 180? at the heating rate of 0.33?/min in an air atmosphere. The result showed that oxygen consumption rate, CO gas production rate and heating intensity of all coal samples increased with the rising of the temperature, which of the Jurassic coal was higher than that of Permian-carboniferous coal. The C2H4 gas of Jurassic coal generated earlier, more than that of Permian-carboniferous coal in the process of oxidation and spontaneous combustion. It indicated that the Jurassic coal was easier to be oxidized and spontaneous combustion and the index parameters of spontaneous combustion were different between the Jurassic coal and permo-carboniferous coal.INTRODUCTION Coal was the foundation of industry development, and occupied 70% of primary energy production and consumption structure in China. According to the data of the 3rd coalfield prediction, 39.6% of the total coal resources were located in northwest Jurassic coal field in China [1], where the quality of coal was excellent. The study of northwest Jurassic coal already dated from the 80s of the 20th century, about coal rock composition, coal metamorphism [2], coal-derived hydrocarbons, coal structure [3], etc. The results of these studies showed that the composition and properties of Jurassic coal was obviously different from Permian-carboniferous coal, as well as the characteristic of spontaneous combustion [4]. As a result, the spontaneous combustion characteristic of Jurassic coal particularly needed to be studied. Now more and more methods could be conducted to test the characteristics of coal spontaneous combustion, for example, thermal analysis technology [5-7], programmed heating experiment [8-10] and coal spontaneous combustion experiment [11,12]. In these methods, programmed heating experiment could be conducted to determine the oxygen consumption rate, CO gas production rate and heating intensity quickly."

Introduction In an earlier publication, the application of exoelectron technology to the monitoring of dry grinding in a ball mill was reported. Recently, the author has investigated the ball mill problem in more detail with the system shown in Fig.1 . Here, some of the current generated in the ore-ball-water mixture was picked up by the metal chains and served as a measure of the rate of grinding. While the mechanism of current generation has not been completely clarified, a parallel study of electrical effects associated with rock drilling indicated that the major driving force is the zeta potential*, while oxidation of the freshly fractured material provides the remainder of the current. Both of these effects are sensitive to the exposed surface area, and it might be expected that the observed currents would provide a measure of the grinding rate. This "surface area" effect allows the measurement system to be used in any type of rock or ore grinding. Some studies with sulfide copper ore indicate higher currents than those observed with silica sand, but the overall pattern of current versus grinding rate is essentially the same. Experimental Studies The experimental system was set up as shown in Fig. 1. The initial studies were done with silica sand because of its availability and for comparison with the data of reference 1. The sand was sized to an average of 425 µm (40 mesh); a typical charge consisted of 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) of sand, 0.85 L (0.22 gal) of tap water and 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) of iron grinding balls 25.5 mm (1 in.) in diameter. For a typical "run," the mill was loaded with a fresh charge of ore and operated for periods ranging from 10-60 min. During this time, the current was measured with a Keithley 417 picoammeter and a chart recorder. At the end of the grinding period, the charge was removed and sieved to recover the 425, 300, and 212 pm (40, 50, and 70 mesh) fractions which were then drained and weighed. A fresh charge was used for each test and every attempt was made to keep the draining and weighing processes uniform. *The zeta potential is the voltage developed between the surface of a solid particle and the ion solution in which it is immersed. In the case of rock/ore materials in water, the zeta potential is negative.

In South Carolina and Georgia an area about 20 miles wide situated near the inner margin of the Coastal Plain and extending from the vicinity of Columbia, S.C. southwestward about 180 miles to the vicinity of Macon, Georgia is the principal kaolin-producing area of the world. It is especially important as the world's major source of clay used for paper coating. Essentially all of the land known or likely to be productive of quality kaolin in this area is now owned or controlled by producing companies. The least-fully developed portion is that in the vicinity of Wrens, Georgia which has been explored and developed since 1961. For the two decades following the end of world war II, demand for kaolin increased at approximately twice the rate for other industrial minerals. From 1945 to 1965 production increased four-fold. Since 1965 the rate of increase has been less, but the outlook now is that production and demand will double at least once again before the year 2000. A substantial part of this increased demand has come, and will continue to come, from industrial development, especially in the paper industry, outside the United States. The general effect, in addition to a continuing increase in production in the U.S., will be to cause: 1. Intensive research for development of more effective and more economical methods of beneficiation; 2. Concerted research effort to find an economical way of modifying high-viscosity kaolin so that it can be used for paper coating; 3. More active exploration in the U.S. and overseas, especially for deposits to supply the foreign markets; 4. More intensive study of the geological factors responsible for the accumulation of commercial deposits of kaolin; 5. Some modest rise in price, relative to the cost of other industrial minerals. The effect on kaolin producing region of Georgia and South Carolina will be to cause: 1. Working of progressively lower-grade deposits; 2. An increase in the acceptable thickness of overburden; 3. Mining of deposits farther down-dip, the use of which is now inhibited by large volumes of groundwater; 4. Increased threat of invasion of the kaolin in industry's market by substitute materials; 5. A substantial increase in concern over environmental factors; 6. More attention to be paid to the large opportunity offered for mining of silica sand and other co-products.

Industrial-scale test results indicate superior metallurgical performance of column flotation compared to conventional cell flotation for copper cleaning. A technical comparison of bubble generation systems for column flotation is made. Two types of bubble generation systems are considered: the filter-cloth type spargers and the Turbo-Air® sparger, which utilizes an air-water mixture fed to the column through injection tubes. Examples of the improved technical performance available with an external sparger system are presented using data from plant tests conducted for specific applications with several different mineral ores. INTRODUCTION Column flotation is now a valuable unit operation which mineral processing engineers employ in the design and operation of flotation circuits in nearly all mineral applications. The acceptance of columns in the mid- 1980s by the minerals industry was paralleled by a rigorous approach to developing a scientific understanding of the design, scale- up, and operation of column flotation units (Finch and Dobby, 1990). Since then, column flotation has become a standard unit of the cleaning stage in many new mineral concentrator projects and has replaced older mechanical cells to improve process efficiency. The size of column cells has continued to grow from the initial 0.9- to 2.1 -meter diameter range, and it is not uncommon to find column cells today being 2.7- to 3.6-meters in diameter. With the success of the smaller units, the scale-up to larger cells has been proven and demonstrated by the performance of the large-diameter cells (Murdock and Wyslouzil. 1991). The use of columns in flotation circuits has also been accompanied by developments in modelling. control, and optimization of column performance (Lee et al, 1991). The bubble generation system is the heart of the operation of column flotation cells. The most common methods for generating bubbles can be divided into two types: the internal and external spargers. Internal spargers are typically a porous material, such as sintered glass, porous rubber or filter-cloth, or maybe a single- or multi-nozzle sparger. External spargers implies that a gas and a liquid (either water or slurry) are brought into contact outside the column and that mixture is then introduced into the column. Several types of external spargers are available today, and innovative designs for externally mounted air sparging systems have been a significant factor in the successful application of columns. INTRODUCTION The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), commonly known as the Deep Tunnel Project, is the daring and unique concept developed by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC) as a two-phase solution to the problem of waterway pollution and basement flooding due to sewer system backups created by the combined sewer over-flows (CSOs). Phase I, primarily for pollution control, includes the tunnels, shafts, connecting sewers and structures. These Phase I facilities intercept, during wet weather events, the CSOs within the MWRDGC TARP service area. The tunnels and shafts provide temporary storage of the CSOs for subsequent treatment at Water Reclamation Plants (WRP) before discharging into waterways. Ultimately, upon completion of Phase II, the tunnels, located from 45 m(150 ft) to 100 m (330 ft) below ground, will convey the CSOs to reservoirs for storage until WRP capacity is available. Phase II, which includes the reservoirs, pumping facilities, additional tunnels and shafts, has been planned to serve a dual purpose. The reservoirs provide storage of excess flows during wet weather events, those beyond the WRP capacity. Following the wet weather events, the stored flows can be conveyed, at controlled rates, to the WRPs for full treatment. These excess flows previously would have resulted in both overflows into the waterways and eventually backups in the local sewer systems. The storage capacity of the reservoirs also will promote the full utilization of the conveyance capacity of the tunnels and shafts, which in turn results in optimizing the conveyance capacity of the existing sewer systems. Therefore pollution control is further enhanced by allowing for capture of a greater volume of CSOs and greatly minimizing backups in the local sewer systems. The TARP project consists of four systems: O’Hare, Mainstream, Des Plaines, and Calumet, covering a total area of 971 km2 (375 mi2) and serving the City of Chicago and 51neighboring communities as shown in Figure1. With only two contracts left before completion of the Phase I tunnels, the 12.7km (7.9mi) Torrence Avenue leg, to be awarded in 1997, and the 12.4km (7.7mi) Little Calumet leg unfunded as of yet, both part of the Calumet System, the pollution control phase of the project is now 86% complete (Table 1).

"Heat and humidity buildup within refuge alternatives (RAs) may expose occupants to physiological hazards such as heat stress. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require RAs in underground coal mines to provide a life-sustaining environment for miners trapped underground when escape is impossible. RAs are required to sustain life for 96 hours while maintaining an apparent temperature (AT) below 95°F (35°C). NIOSH tested a 10-person tent-type RA, a 23-person tent-type RA, and a 6-person metal-type RA in NIOSH underground coal mine facilities to investigate the thermal environment over a 96-hour period. The test results showed that mine air and mine strata temperatures surrounding an RA occupied by simulated miners increased over the 96-hour test period. The test results suggest that RA manufacturers should consider this increase in temperatures when calculating and evaluating RA components during surface and laboratory tests. The findings can equip stakeholders with additional considerations for calculating heat and humidity temperature profiles for RAs not tested in situ. INTRODUCTION RAs are designed to provide a life-sustaining environment for miners who cannot escape after a mine disaster. One of the major considerations for integrating RAs in mine environments is the thermal environment inside the RA and the impact that the surrounding mine conditions have on the temperature and humidity buildup. Previous research has observed that the metabolic heat of the occupants and the heat released by the CO2 scrubbing systems will cause the RA interior air temperature to increase. In addition to the increase in temperature, an occupant’s respiration and perspiration, as well as the chemical reaction of the scrubbing chemicals with CO2, will contribute to an increase in humidity within the RA. The resulting internal thermal conditions, if not controlled, can subject miners to conditions that can lead to heat exhaustion, heat stroke, or even death depending on the duration and magnitude of exposure. Apparent temperature (AT) is a temperature-humidity metric for the perceived temperature caused by the combined effects of air temperature, relative humidity (RH), and wind speed. It is used to assess the perception of indoor temperatures when workplaces are not sufficiently heated, cooled, or insulated to provide comfortable or healthy conditions. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require that RAs must be designed to ensure that the internal AT does not exceed 95°F (35°C) when the RA is fully occupied."

"Controlling float coal dust in underground coal mines before dispersal into the general airstream can reduce the risk of mine explosions while potentially achieving a more efficient and effective use of rock dust. A prototype, flooded-bed scrubber was evaluated for float coal dust control in the return of a continuous miner section. The scrubber was installed in line between the ventilation tubing and an exhausting auxiliary fan. Airborne and deposited dust mass measurements were collected over a period of three days at set distances from the fan exhaust to assess the changes in float coal dust levels in the return due to the operation of the scrubber. Mass-based measurements were collected on a per-cut basis and were normalized per foot of advance by the continuous miner. Results show that average float coal dust levels measured under baseline conditions were reduced by over 91% when operating the scrubber. INTRODUCTION In 2012, underground mining in the United States produced over 342 million tons of coal [EIA 2013]. During the cutting, crushing, and transport of this coal, dust is generated and can be entrained in the air ventilating the mine. Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 75.400-1 (30 CFR§ 75.400-1) defines float coal dust as particles of coal that can pass a No. 200 sieve. These coal particles can be carried by the ventilating air into return entries before settling onto mine surfaces [NIOSH 2006]. If this float coal dust becomes re-entrained into the airstream, it can propagate an explosion throughout mine workings [Harris et al. 2010]. Application of rock dust in underground coal mines is required by Federal regulation as a means of preventing the propagation of explosions by float coal dust. In order to meet Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 75.403 (30 CFR § 75.403), 80% incombustible content must be maintained in the composition of dust deposited in mine entries [76 Fed. Reg. 35968 (2011)]. This fraction of incombustible content is increased if elevated levels of methane are present. In order to maintain the required incombustible content, frequent or constant application of rock dust is undertaken by mine operators. Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 75.2 (30 CFR § 75.2) defines the properties of the rock dust that must be used by mine operators."
