Surface mining and reclamation has the potential to at least temporarily increase surface runoff and resultant erosion and gully development. This increase in erosion is due in part to compaction of the soil surface with heavy equipment, creation of large relatively unvegetated watersheds, and elimination of natural dendritic ephemeral drainage patterns. Methods for stabilizing gully channels which may develop prior to establishment of sufficient vegetation to control erosion are analyzed. Utilization of various sizes of riprap for channel lining, the use of riprap check dams, reinforcement of riprap check dams, and the relation- ship of type of control structure to area of watershed and resultant flow velocities are discussed.

Noise control is an important consideration in the design and operation of coal preparation plants. It is essential to understand and control noise sources to provide a safe environment for operating personnel. The average noise exposure levels in a typical coal preparation plant generally range between 95 and 100 db. An operator should not be exposed to noise levels of this magnitude for more than 4 and 2 hr, respectively, according to MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) regulations. The major noise sources in a coal preparation plant include noise from impacting the inside surfaces of steel chutes, vibrating screens, coal crushers, pumps, motors, fans, and blowers. The magnitude of noise varies considerably from one situation to another. NOISE EXPOSURE IN COAL PREPARATION PLANTS Noise regulations established by the Occupational Safety and Health and- ministration (OSHA) are accepted by MSHA relative to coal preparation plants. Fig. 14-43 shows a graph of the time of noise exposure in hours per day to which a worker can be exposed for each A-weighted sound level. According to this graph, a worker is permitted to spend 8 hr in a 90-db noise environment, but that time must be halved when the A-weighted sound level increases 5 db. The noise dosage a worker receives is determined by the ratio of the length of time the worker spends in a particular noise environment divided by the length of time he is permitted to spend in that environment. If the worker is exposed to several different sound levels, his total dosage would be the sum of each of the individual dosages. The equation for determining the dosage is: where C is the actual duration of exposure at a given steady state noise level and T is the noise exposure limit for the level present during the time C According to MSHA regulations, the dosage, D, should not exceed one (1) for any worker for a full day of work. As an example of typical plant noise levels, vibratory screens and crushers emanate noise levels in excess of 90 db at a distance of 3 ft (0.9 m) with no material flow. Numerous techniques for treating, controlling, and preventing acid rock drainage have been applied at the Summitville Mine Superfund Site. Challenging aspects of the remote mine site include the wide-spread occurrence of acid-generating soils and rocks, extensive surface and underground mine workings, and a cold and wet climate. Water treatment was an immediate necessity when the Government took control of the abandoned site in December of 1992. Subsequent reclamation activities have emphasized prevention and control of ARD to minimize future water treatment requirements. A combination of conventional, innovative, and experimental methods are being applied to successfully mitigate ARD at Summitville.

Anew approach to the use of projectiles for rock fragmentation uses recently-developed technology to optimize projectile shape and composition to achieve the desired type of breakage. Projectiles can also be made of various materials, as determined by the requirements of downstream processes. This paper describes laboratory tests with an 21-mm (8-guage) gun, and field tests with a 60-mm cannon.

The Bannockburn gold prospect is a new discovery in Ontario's oldest gold camp at Eldorado, eastern Ontario. Mono Gold Mines Inc. of Vancouver, British Columbia, acquired the property in 1980 and in 1984 discovered a previously unreported gold bearing quartz vein system to the northeast of the old Bannockburn Mine. Extensive diamond drilling carried out since 1985 defined a quartz vein system over 475 m (1 ,500 ft) of strike to a depth of over 105 m (350 ft). Limited underground exploration by decline to the 22.9 m (75 ft) level in 1988 confirmed the continuity and tenor of the quartz veins. Gold occurs as native metal with minor sulphides and bismuth tellurides in a quartz carbonate vein system within metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks of the Grenville Province. Metallurgical test work on a surface bulk sample was favourable. Estimates of drill indicated reserves have been made as well as reserves based on the limited underground exploration.

Geological differences among various coalfields restrain the applicability of subsidence prediction using existing European methods. To modify these methods for domestic conditions, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, developed a method of assessment to evaluate the lithological effects on subsidence in the Northern Appalachian basin by examining data collected from 16 longwall panels in the coalfield. The assessment is partially completed, and the results to date show that the ratio of maximum subsidence to the extraction thickness, known as the subsidence factor, can be expressed in terms of the width-to-depth ratio by a simple exponential equation which has a coefficient tentatively considered as the subsidence index. This index varies with the lithology of a particular site and can be expressed in terms of the percent distribution of weak and strong rocks in the overburden.

The Bureau of Mines' Tuscaloosa Research Center has developed a field test unit (FTU) which dewaters mine and/or mineral processing by-product slurries. The feed material (by-product slurry) is mixed with a known quantity and specific type of synthetic polymer (usually a polyacrylamide) to induce flocculation in a continuous operation. The flocculated material passes over a specific number and size of slotted stationary screens which separates the flocculated solid material from the "clean" water. The "static screens" are positioned at a fixed angle to maximize flow capacity and capture of the solids content. An investigation was conducted at an industrial crushed stone operation located near Birmingham, AL, to determine if the Bureau's FTU could successfully dewater the waste slurry generated during grinding and sizing operations at this facility. The investigation showed that waste slurries could be dewatered to 50 pct solids, at a polymer cost of approximately $0.85/ton of dry solids treated, and resulted in approximately 85 to 95 pct solids recovery. The dewatered material continued to consolidate and reached 69 pct solids in 24 h. Presently, the waste slurry generated at this facility is discarded into impoundments. However, this research has identified the recovered waste as an economically marketable product.

The Boliden Aitik concentrator in Sweden processes 2,000 t/h (2,200 stph) of low-grade copper ore. The plant consists of five grinding lines that feed four bulk-flotation banks with a scavenger-concentrate regrind mill und a column cleaner circuit with a regrind mill. The authors installed a model-based expert optimizing control system to maximize copper recovery in the bulk-flotation circuit while maintaining an appropriate copper grude in the cleaner feed. The optimizing control system uses on-line assays and calculates and implements set points for cell pulp levels, air rates and reagent- addition rates. It combines the power of a dynamic population-balance model that estimates mineral liberation in each stream, an optimizer that computes appropriate set points and a rule-based module that implements the strategy. The benefits have been evaluated over a period of three months. The model-based expert optimizing control system generates a measurable increase in copper recovery, around 0.5%, and an optimized bulk-concentrate grade. The need to maintain the optimizing control system and other practical aspects are discussed.

To start my talk, I thought it might be helpful for us to define the term "aggregate", so I went to the dictionary. Webster has several listings under "aggregate", and I found the following: "1. A mass or body of units or parts somewhat loosely associated with one another." Well, I didn't like that term "loosely" so I read on. "2. Crystals of one or more kinds of mineral or rock fragments." That sounded better, but I still read on. "3. Any of several hard inert materials used for mixing with a cementing material to form concrete or mortar." That sounded even better, but it should be a little broader. So I would like to define "aggregates" for you as follows: "Hard, inert fragments of rock or minerals used alone or with cementing agents to form products essential to nearly all types of construction." Usually aggregates are sand, gravel, or crushed stone, but other minerals such as clay or shale can be heated and become aggregates. What are some of the construction uses? Well, we've already mentioned concrete, as used in streets and highways, sidewalks and parking lots, airports and all kinds of building construction, not to mention bridges and swimming pools, and docks and breakwaters, just to list some of the uses. Our way of life couldn't exist without concrete. And you can't have concrete without aggregates,

The concentrator of Bonneville Ltd.* at Wendover, Utah, processes a feed obtained by, solar evaporation of a brine containing sodium and potassium chlorides with minor amounts of impurities. Salable potassium chloride concentrateis produced from this feed in two steps: flotation with amine reagents to concentrate the potassium chloride, and washing of the concentrate with fresh water to reach final grade. In the flotation step emphasis is placed on recovery, whereas the washing step has as its objective the production of salable grade (in excess of 60 percent K20 equivalent), with recovery being important but secondary Ideally, flotation should give maximum recovery at a concentrate grade which will permit washing to salable grade with a minimum recovery loss, thereby maximizing over-all recovery. Except for this relationship, flotation and washing are two separate and distinct operations.

Allis Mineral Systems' Grate- Kiln system can economically convert low-grade iron ore into high- grade iron-ore pellets suitable as feed material for blast furnaces for making steel. These pellets can also be fed to a direct reduction process for making sponge iron. The Grate- Car system combines the company's [ ] Grate-Kiln system for iron-ore pelletizing and Accar system for iron- ore reduction. The Grate-Car system consists of a traveling grate, a ported rotary kiln and a rotary cooler that are coupled in series. This system eliminates the pelletizing plant's rotary kiln and annular cooler. It reduces the need for some auxiliary equipment. This results in lower capital cost and lower energy consumption. The traveling grate provides that static bed handling necessary for heat hardening pellets before their discharge into the kiln. The ported kiln provides the reducing atmosphere with a more precise means of controlling the kiln axial temperature profile than conventional rotary kilns.

The Inland Feeder project is a critical component of Southern California’s water delivery system, relying on a strategic plan of water transfer and storage to enable the delivery of an additional 650 million gallons of water a day. The Arrowhead West and Arrowhead East tunnels form part of this system, comprising the construction of nearly13 km (8 miles) of bored tunnel under the San Bernardino National Forest. This paper describes the design and manufacture of the 4.88 m (16 ft) diameter precast segmental primary lining that will be used in these tunnels to resist rock loads, and up to 275 m (900 ft) of external hydrostatic head.

16.1.1-VENTILATION'S ROLE Importance of Ventilation and Environmental Control-Mine ventilation is necessary for the preservation of human life and for the conduct of operations involved in the underground extraction of minerals. It clearly is the most essential of the functions attendant to mining, yet it is auxiliary to the primary objective in mineral extraction. Ventilation in mining thus poses a paradox: ideally, it should be carried out with minimum interference with and cost to production operations, yet it is absolutely vital in providing adequate environmental con¬ditions to support mining. Deterioration of the atmosphere, along with rising ground pressure, imposes the ultimate constraint with depth in underground mining. Ventilation requirements and costs rise rapidly with depth. To preserve atmospheric quality under intense heat conditions, ventilation at great depths must be supplemented by air condition¬ing. Likewise, when mining at any depth under severe or excessive conditions of gas, dust or humidity, supplementary control measures must be employed. In recent years, environmental standards in mines have been raised substantially. While limits are based on human tolerance, increasing concern is being expressed for standards of human comfort. The reasons are economic, as well as humanitarian. Worker performance and longevity correlates closely with environmental quality. Further, adverse accident and insurance compensation rates are a consequence of unsatisfactory environmental conditions. No mining company can afford to be lax in its environmental and ventilation practices. Functions and Processes-Ventilation is the control of air movement, its amount and its direction. As a means of quantity control, it is one of the constituent processes of total air conditioning, the simultaneous control within prescribed limits of the quality, quantity and temperature-humidity of the air. Ventilation is the most common and most. important conditioning process employed in mines for air environmental control. In mine ventilation, air is coursed through the mine workings and openings themselves and, for auxiliary purposes, through vent tubing and ducts. Thus, many interdependencies exist between the mining system and ventilation method. In fact, the two often have evolved ,jointly, as in room-and-pillar extraction of bedded or tabular mineral deposits, such as coal. Ventilation in mines today is provided almost exclusively by large fans, although air flow may result due to natural (thermodynamic) conditions. As mines increase in depth, size and complexity, demands on the ventilation system to maintain more stringent standards of environmental quality likewise rise. On the other hand, never have the technology and resources of the mining industry to cope with environmental problems been so well developed as they are today. In spite of rising costs, it is unlikely that further progress in mine ventila¬tion and air conditioning must await technological breakthroughs. 16.1.2-NATURE OF THE MINE ATMOSPHERE Air Mixtures-Air is a gaseous mixture comprising the natural atmosphere at the surface of the earth. Sutter Gold Venture excavated an exploration decline into a mineralized zone in the Sutter Creek gold mining district. Delays in obtaining the conditional-use permit resulted in 7 to 10 million gallons of water accumulation in the decline containing elevated dissolved arsenic. Sutter received a permit to land apply the water after reducing the arsenic concentration to 0.05 mg/L. Initially the water was treated by co- precipitation arsenic with ferric hydroxide. Operational difficulties of this treatment system resulted in Sutter pursuing alternative treatment methods. The activated alumina adsorpting was selected due to its flexibility and ease of operation. Operating and maintenance data and costs will be presented.

BOB FALCONER: Our next topic leader is Scott Lawson. Scott is manager of human resources for Independence Mining Company, Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Company, Victor, Colorado. Scott has 25 years of human resources management experience in the mining industry, surface and underground, precious and base metals. His topic this morning is "It's the Employee That Counts." SCOTT LAWSON: When reviewing the topic of productivity in a union versus nonunion workplace, we need to look at who, and not what, can make the difference in ensuring the success of a production-oriented operation. It's not explicitly whether the property is unionized or not, but whether the employee team (including the "management group") is working together to accomplish common, shared, and meaningful goals. The bottom line is what action or actions can be taken to develop trust and to strengthen working relationships that challenge and compel employees to willingly share their particular areas of expertise. I want to share a real-life experience that happened to me during the summer of 1961. Perhaps some of you will be able to relate to the following story. I was an 18-year-old fresh out of high school, ready for my first true work adventure. I found summer employment for myself and two friends with the New York Central Railroad in Cleveland, Ohio. Our jobs were as laborers, laying ties and rails, and unloading ballast. We made $2.62 an hour. We were fat cats! My friends and I took on the job with a great deal of vigor, to the dismay of our fellow workers. These workers were unionized by the Railway Workers, which I believe were affiliated with the Teamsters. Talk about being naive, we wrote the book in 1961. When we took the jobs, we did not realize the employees were represented by a union, even though we didn't think they worked too hard. Within our first two weeks of work, we established new daily records for laying virtually twice as many ties as had been standard, and we nearly tripled production by the end of our hall of fame railroad careers. We even took naively to the next level by lining up the ties for our afternoon work shift during our lunch break. In 1961, we thought we were the Mantle, Maris, and Colavito of tie laying. For the younger set in the audience, we would have felt like the McGwire, Griffey Jr., and "The Big Hurt" Thomas of tie laying. A section of the union contract allowed for a 60-day probationary period during which the employee was evaluated and also exempt from joining the union. "Although conventional coal mine designs are conservative regarding pillar strength, local failures such as roof-falls and pillar bursts still affect mine safety and operations. Previous studies have identified that discontinuous, layered roof materials have some self-supporting capacity. This research is a preliminary step towards understanding these mechanics in coal-measure rocks. Although others have considered broad conceptual models and simplified analogs for mine roof behavior, this study presents a unique numerical model that more completely represents in-situ roof conditions. The discrete element method (DEM) is utilized to conduct a parametric analysis considering a range of in-situ stress ratios, material properties, and joint networks to determine the parameters controlling the stability of single-entries modeled in two-dimensions. Model results are compared to empirical observations of roof-support effectiveness (ARBS) in the context of the coal mine roof rating (CMRR) system. Results such as immediate roof displacement, overall stability, and statistical relationships between model parameters and outcomes are presented herein. Potential practical applications of this line of research include: (1) roof-support optimization for a range of coal-measure rocks, (2) establishment of a relationship between roof stability and pillar stress, and (3) determination of which parameters are most critical to roof stability and therefore require concentrated evaluation.INTRODUCTIONRecent studies on pillar design have suggested that the assumptions utilized in traditional methods such as tributary area theory (TAT) (i.e. overburden has no self-supporting capacity, infinite pillar array, and CHILE material properties) are invalid in many geo-mining conditions (Esterhuizen, Mark, and Murphy, 2010; Frith and Reed, 2017). Although TAT is conservative with respect to pillar loading, and mine fatalities have steadily decreased since 1990, roof-falls and pillar bursts still occur and injure hundreds of miners per year (Mark, Pappas, and Barczak, 2011). Even though large-scale global mine failure has not occurred in a US coal mine since 2007, the mechanics of global and local stability as governed by the relationship between geologic parameters, mine geometry, and engineering design are still not well-constrained.Numerical methods are a highly effective tool that can be used to gain further insight into these relationships. When using such an approach, calibration to existing empirical relationships is imperative to ensure that numerical model results are realistic. In this study, we utilize the discrete element method (DEM) approach in Itasca’s Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC v. 6.0) (Itasca, 2010).DEM accounts for explicit separation and contact of individual deformable blocks (Jing, 2003) and captures how discontinuities can affect system behavior. Discontinuous and anisotropic rockmass properties are typical features in coal-measure rock which contain various horizontal (bedding) and sub-vertical (joints) fractures depending on their depositional environment, diagenesis, and historic and current stress states."

Test of trolley-diesel prime power is another step in the search to exploit the unused potential of electric wheel driven haulage trucks. The output of the present engine - a 700 horsepower diesel - is not adequate to exploit fully the 1200 horsepower potential of the two electric wheel drive motors. Power was supplied to a modified 100-ton haulage truck through a double wire trolley system. The vehicle was tested with various payloads on a 7% adverse grade haul road. More significant conclusions developed are: Power - Horsepower to propel the vehicle can he more than doubled to improve truck cycle time. Productivity - Trolley power up adverse grades can improve [producivity] rates from 18 to 36%, dependent upon haul road profile.

A fundamental study of the mechanisms involved in the conditioning of coarse Florida phosphate has led to some interesting discoveries. Studies by the Bureau of Mines have shown that conditioning time and mixing intensity greatly affect the grades and recoveries of the phosphate minerals and quartz in the rougher concentrate. In particular, as the conditioning time or mixing intensity increased, the phosphate recovery remained constant while the amount of quartz floated decreased. This phenomenon is contrary to conventional wisdom and could lead to a more efficient coarse flotation circuit.

Any geostatistical study involves (implicit) hypotheses about 1. The distribution function 2. The drift of the data 3. The (underlying) variogram Once these are known, most other results follow from geostatistical theory. However, to date, there have been few theoretical studies on testing these implicit hypotheses. Most of the published studies in this area have dealt with the fluctuation of the variogram or the sampling distribution of the variogram (Journel and Huijbregts, 1978; Davis and Borgman, 1979). Questions regarding these hypotheses regarding a given deposit arise often. Coal geologists often infer channels and washouts on the basis of thicknesses data. Zoning is recognized in a variety of metal deposits. A test as to whether these inferences are valid on just chance occurrences would have widespread application. .It is standard geostatistical practice to "eyeball" fit variograms. In the early exploration phase when just a few pairs are available, the variogram often displays wide fluctuations and there may be considerable doubt about which variogram model to use.
