Effective coal mine face ventilation, for remotely controlled and automated mining systems, is essential for the control of methane. The evolution of new mining equipment and methods has required changes and improvements in face ventilation methods. One emphasis today is on the use of remotely operated and automated mining systems that can be used to make continuous cuts of 6 m (20 ft) and deeper. U.S. Bureau of Mines research is studying ways to more effectively ventilate these extended cuts. Two face ventilation techniques that utilize either blowing brattice or a jet fan for deep cutting are examined in this paper. Bureau of Mines procedures for evaluating face ventilation systems are also discussed.

In 1970, recognizing the great need for an economical, high capacity chemical oxidation process for wastewater treatment, Houston Research began a fundamental study of the available technology, Included was waste characterization; oxidation chemistry for molecular oxygen, ozone and catalyst initiators; kinetics of reaction; gas-liquid contacting methods; and optimization of staged reactors for mixed wastes. Although ozone is the most powerful oxidizer available, the literature contains contradictory reports of its speed and effectiveness. It is now felt to be most likely that many of these early investigations were limited by the ineffectual transfer of ozone from the gas phase into the liquid, and so the investigators were really observing the effects of mass transfer and erroneously trying to interpret the results as if they were chemical reaction data. HR's work considered the cost and effectiveness of gas-liquid contacting in a packed tower, gas sparged contactor, ejector with hold-up tank, and a completely mixed, sparged contactor. The sparged, mixed contactor was found to be most effective and least expensive, and a later investigation settled on the reactor configuration shown in Figure 1 because of its effectiveness of mass transfer and because it lends itself to direct scale-up techniques using laboratory data to design larger reactors.

A recent study by the New York Trap Rock Corporation has conclusively determined that the number of blasting complaints is directly related to the noise produced by the blast. In turn it has been known for some years that the noise produced by the blast is directly related to atmospheric structure of temperature, wind, and humidity in the vertical direction. Normally during daylight hours the temperature decreases with altitude at the rate of about five and one half degrees per thousand feet on a sunny day, and to somewhat lesser amounts on cloudy days. Consequently, sound travels slower with altitude because of the lower temperature, and the sound rays tend to bend skyward, and are soon dispersed in the atmosphere. Quite frequently, however, the temperature increases with altitude, and just the opposite effect is attained. That is sound rays are bent downward, and sometimes reach the ground with intensities approaching that at the source. When the temperature increases with altitude a temperature inversion is said to exist. Less frequently than these two atmospheric conditions a condition is observed where temperature remains constant with altitude. This is called an isothermal atmospheric condition, and sound passing through this type of atmosphere tends to travel in straight lines, neither bending upward nor downward. The sound will be greater than normal near the blast, but will dissipate rapidly with distance from the blast site with no zone or zones of silence.

The behavior of fire and airflows in a confined tunnel differ significantly from more familiar fire situations outside, due to the buoyant effect which tends to create a layer of hot smoke and gases flowing away from the fire near the crown of the tunnel, while air supporting combustion moves toward the fire beneath the smoke layer. A subway emergency ventilation system is designed to force air to flow through the tunnel, shifting the balance of heated air in the direction of the forced flow and avoiding the "back-layering" of hot gases and fumes. This paper presents a computer program, called the "Subway Environment Simulation" (SES), which can be used to predict airflows created by the emergency ventilation system. It utilizes the latest state-of-the-art analytical treatment of fires in enclosed spaces, including observations from mine fires and gas explosions. The program allows designers to reduce construction cost by identifying unnecessary ventilation shafts and by verifying fan capacities. In addition, the program allows the designers and operators to determine safe evacuation routes, in case of a train fire, by predicting the occurrence of back-layering. It can be used to determine when the ventilation system can control the direction of smoke movement to provide a clear and safe path for evacuating people and facilitate fire fighting operations.

This paper presents preliminary results of a US Bureau of Mines (USBM) study of potential costs of compliance with possible federal regulations for copper heap and dump leaching. The regulations could arise under amendments to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and/or the General Mining Law. Estimates are given for the cost of compliance with possible technology standards that would require the use of liners and closure caps regardless of terrain and underlying geology and hydrology. This cost is compared to the cost of compliance with 1992 state requirements for terrains typical of those found at existing copper leach sites in the southwestern United States. Incremental compliance costs are found to widely exceed screening criteria used by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to denote significant economic impact.

Two recently published papers describing the use of psychological tests for selection and placement of coal mine personnel have created considerable interest within the Coal Industry, one paper, published in the April 1957 "Mining Congress Journal," entitled "Personnel Evaluation and Training," discusses the use of tests by the Christopher Coal Company, The second paper, published in the "West -Virginia Coal Mining Institute's 1957 Report" and in the September 1957 "Coal Age," entitled "Testing to Select Better Personnel for Coal Mining Today," outlines Hanna Coal Company's test and selection procedures. Since these rather detailed sources are readily available, and to avoid repetition of the material in them, we will confine this paper to a very brief review of the essential steps already taken by these companies and a more extensive look at newer material. Briefly, the Personnel Managers, Mr. Harold L, Durrett and Mr. Albert M,. Rowe, of the Hanna Coal Company and Christopher Coal Company, in conjunction with Dr. Quin F, Curtis, Head of the Psychology Department of West Virginia University, developed two different groups oftests for coal mine personnel, The first group oftests was designed to assist in the selection of supervisors. These tests of the supervisory group were "The California Short Form Test of Mental Maturity - Advanced Series," which gave an I.Q. rating, and the second test is known as "The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory," which measures several personality characteristics, These tests must be given, grade, and interpreted by a person trained in psychological testing. As a result of testing all of Christopher's supervisory employees (seventy in number) by this method, and then comparing the individual results with the individual ratings of the foremen on the job, a so-called foremen's scale was developed. If this resulting foremen's scale had been used to select the foremen who were rated as, the best men in on-the-job performance, it would have correctly identified seventy-four percent of that group.

Ion flotatir,n of gold is a process being developed to selectively float extremely dilute aurocyanide liquors using a novel surface active complexing agent. The principle of ion flotation is also applicable to a wide range of other metal-containing solutions. The market potential of the gold flotation process would be enhanced by the possible combination of the gold recovery capabilities with both cyanide recovery and metal removal. For example, recovery of copper cyanides from a return liquid strean1 would be a useful means of reducing operating costs and satisfying environmental pressures to treat tailings dams. Experimental work is described where samples of tailings solution from a far north Queensland gold mine were subjected to ion flotation to remove copper cyanide species from a clear recycle solution. The form in which these products was removed was of secondary importance compared to the need to produce a clean solution for use in the plant. Recovery of the anionic copper cyanide species was accomplished using a quaternary ammonium surfactant.

The present paper deals with the important technological developments in gold processing and where possible, the data is presented in the form of tables. Gold processing methods have evolved to such an extent that low grade and complex ores once considered uneconomic are now becoming viable. Constant efforts are underway to innovate technologies in order to improve the efficiencies and cut down the capital and operating costs. The methods are discussed.

"For his pioneering contributions to the understanding of the geology of porphyry copper systems" Recipient Of The 1997 D. C. Jackling Award SPENCER R. TITLEY Introduction The subject of this lecture, a late century perspective on porphyry copper geology, is one of current interest and importance as the search for these ores remains intense. It is presented in the belief that an appreciation of our present understanding of the subject requires it to be viewed historically, thus providing a basis for evaluating appropriate directions for continued study. At the outset, it is important to note that the technology of mining and extractive metallurgy has developed ore from these low grade orebodies, starting with D. C. Jackling, and has continued to create them as copper grade and price have diminished. But the continued search for them is a geological problem that responds to growing expectations of people and societies; exploration based upon ever increasing knowledge of the habits of the ores has been very successful. This is the story of evolution of geological thought and practice in porphyry ore search across an interval of time beginning with the bulk mining of "low grade" copper ores at Bingham and ending with late Century concepts. "How did we get here?" The lecture concerns the ideas of many different people. The ideas and events discussed reflect a bias on North American thought, where the great low grade orebodies were first recognized as such and where many of the basic geological ideas were developed. A very great number of geologists have contributed to this understanding. In no sense is it meant to minimize the contributions to the story that have evolved in the study and mining of ores of the Andes, whose development and expansion has been nearly synchronous with that in North America - nor to minimized comparable contributions made in the late century from studies of the newer discoveries of deposits in other regions, especially the southwestern Pacific regions. In expansion of this topic, I have found that many important concepts are marked by appropriate publication but some are not, or I have not been able to discover documentation. Many notions appear to have become conventional knowledge without publication, mostly being geological viewpoints developed synchronously from similar observation. Thus, apologies are extended in advance to those whose work I have might have missed and to those unknown to me whose unpublished ideas may have seeped into the pool of common knowledge without appropriate recognition. The analysis here addresses events of two time segments, an older one extending from the developments at Bingham in the early 1900s through the Second World War, ending about 1950: the second period extends from that time to the present. This separation is seen in Figure 1, which traces numbers of publications through the period as extracted from some 700 publications, again with a North American bias, from an annotated bibliography of porphyry copper geology in preparation. During the early period, exploration was "immature" in North America, that is, geologists looked for new districts and sites of the deposits. Outcrops were sought that carried the signatures of former mineralization and regional controls related to structural geology were closely studied. In the later period, North American exploration had "matured" into a study of districts, rather than a search for them. As the studies of these ores intensified during the younger period concommitant with increasing demands for the metal, they did so with a broadened understanding of some habits of occurrence, of hydrothermal alteration, mineral zoning, petrology, and geochemical and geophysical signatures. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has been investigating the application of thiosulfate to recover gold directly from low grade refractory carbonaceous ores for the past four years. Statistical experimental methods were used to determine the effects of various leaching parameters on both gold extraction and thiosulfate consumption. Seven variables were investigated, including thiosulfate, copper, ammonia, sulfite, and sulfate concentrations, leaching time, and leaching atmosphere. This information was used in face-centered cubic (FCC) surface response experiments to define the optimum leaching conditions for a low grade ore. Two models were generated from the data to predict gold extraction and thiosulfate consumption as a function of the leaching parameters. The models predicted a gold extraction of 67 pct and reagent consumption of 2 kg [S2032/mt ore at 0.25 M S2032-, 0.0014 M Cu2+, 0.27 M NH,OH, 0.00625 M SO;-,] and leaching for 16 h. Actual tests resulted in 62 pct gold extraction with 0.93 kg S2032- consumed/mt ore. Subsequent column leaching tests have further demonstrated the viability of applying this technology to recover gold from carbonaceous ores without first pretreating the material. Gold extractions in the column tests ranged from 69 to 78 pct with thiosulfate consumption ranging from 0.4 to 5.4 kg/mt ore. These results compare to <5 pct gold extraction using standard cyanide leaching conditions.

In the last 20 years, studies on controlled flow recirculation in various countries have been carried out in both coal and metal mines. These studies have shown that in addition to economic gains, partial flow recirculation can be used to provide mine workings distant from surface access points with the required volumes of air. These studies have also shown that the operation of fans and regulators, used in a recirculation system, will induce transients in gas flow and gas concentration. Various models have been developed to explain the problem. However, most have failed to incorporate important factors such as diffusion and dispersion in the modeling process. This study examines the theoretical background of gas emission transients from caved areas in coal mines, represents the problem by a "tank-airway" network model, and provides a possible solution. The study also presents the results gained from a laboratory model constructed to evaluate the major factors affecting the shape and duration of gas flow and gas concentration transients in an airflow recirculation system. In this model, the gas injection system was rearranged to simulate the variations in gas emission rates due to changes in air pressure. Within this model, a set of booster fans and regulators were used to generate the changes in air pressure within the model. Finally, the study presents an algorithm and a computer program GASTRAN, developed to analyze the gas concentration transients and calculate the pollutant transport levels in a complex ventilation network. The application of the program is illustrated by means of an example problem.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection in 1998 reviewed its permitting process to determine how effective its program has been in preventing pollution and to identify here it could be improved. Of the 1,699 bituminous mine permits issued from 1987 to 1 996, 50 were identified to have current or past postmining discharges with water quality problems. The remaining 1,649 sites had no known current or past postmining discharges problems. The 50 sites were selected for further review. On closer examination, 33 of these permits no longer had water quality problems or the problem had not actually resulted from the permitted mining activity. Only 17 permits, or one percent of the total permits issued, were found to have caused long-term postmining discharges serious enough to require treatment and prevent bond release. Analysis of these 17 sites using current knowledge of mine drainage prediction, revealed that the most common cause of error was inadequate information in the permit application. Errors in interpretation of the application data and in implementing the permit were less common. A very small percentage of all permits issued resulted in postmining discharges for no clearly identifiable reason. Trends over the 10-year study period indicated a decreasing incidence of permits resulting in postmining discharges. Further, with the exception of the first few years of data, most of the postmining discharges were of mildly acidic or alkaline quality and amenable to passive treatment.

Advanced process control has been implemented at the Jerritt Canyon Mill. Plant production prior to 1997 was limited by grind circuit capacity. The installation of additional mill horsepower and an optimizing supervisory control system achieved a throughput increase in excess of 12 percent. The controller application utilized a seamlessly integrated fuzzy logic expert system for real-time mill control coupled with a neural network predictor for closed-loop feedback of particle size constraints. In late 1998, a second supervisory controller was installed to operate the fluidized bed roasters. The second controller optimized roasting conditions, increased plant throughput and improved metallurgical recovery.

In the Grasberg Mine, a series of orepasses of diameter 2 to 4m are being constructed, each one to carry as much as 10,000 tlhour of copper- and gold-bearing ore through single stage vertical drops of over 500m. At the base of each orepass, the fragmented rock falls into an orebin of diameter 1 Om and 100m deep. Long before the planned tonnages were reached on the early orepasses, a problem arose that was both serious and intriguing. Pressurization of air in the orebins caused by the falling rock reached such levels that when the feed to the top of an orpass was interrupted, a massive surge of air ascended rapidly and produced a dangerous backblast accompanied by dust; grit and rock fragments from the top of the orepass. Backblasts lasted for about one minute and were not only hazardous to the health and safety of personnel but also required time-consuming clean-up operations. The paper describes the aerodynamic analyses that were con- ducted in order to understand fully the mechanisms involved in the phenomenum, and the development of a procedure that al- lows the effects of falling material to be incorporated into existing ventilation network software.

Surface wettability, or contact angle, dictates a number of multiphase ensemble interactions that influence particulate dispersability and adhesion behavior (e.g., filler compatibility] in addition to a number of other phenomena including biocompatibility and bulk powder segregation. The wettability of particulate surfaces significantly impacts nearly all process industries; however, the available techniques to access this quantity are either relative, or tedious-and are application or industry specific. In this study, key features of existing techniques have been combined to design an improved method to delineate particle wettability that is simple, versatile and capable of providing reproducible measurements in an industrial environment.

Concentrate flow rates were measured for the flotation of -100-mesh Lower Kittaning coal in a computer-controlled 0.076 x 3.5-m pilot flotation column. The variables studied were recovery zone height, airflow and solid feed rates. The specific projected surface areas of the feed, concentrate and tailing streams were determined from the measured particle size distributions. The results obtained show that the concen¬trate flow rate was independent of recovery zone height but was dependent on the hydrostatic pressure setting (measure of froth depth), gas flow rate, solid loading and particle size. New correlations for column carrying capacity and yield are provided as a function of bubble surface area flux and the specific particle projected surface area.

Ore was first discovered at the Kidd Creek mine site during the first few days of December 1963 when a diamond drill hole there cut sulfide mineralization. This event marked the end of the search started 11 years earlier with the conception of a geological idea. Economic forces provided the stimulus needed for the application of this idea but other-events, and legal considerations, also played arole in delaying the ultimate discovery. The location of Kidd Creek is shown in Fig. 1. Management of the then Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. had become concerned in 1951 at the company&apos;s declining reserves of native sulfur in Texas. This problem was to be alleviated by new discoveries and development of methods to recover sulfur from sour gas. At the time, however, the solution appeared to lie in the recovery of sulfur from pyritic ores. Canada was chosen as the best country in which to find these ores. Walter Holyk was hired in 1951 to conduct the search. By 1952, he was working in the area near Sherbrooke, Quebec, known as the "Eastern Townships" where mineralization consisting of base metal sulfides in volcanic rocks has long been known. His observations here led him to the then revolutionary conclusion that such mineralization could have formed as part of the volcanic process and not, as was generally supposed at the time, by replacement. On learning of the discovery of similar mineralization near Bathurst, NB, he moved there in the spring of 1953. He was able to utilize his new concept and found the Half-Mile Lake sulfide deposit.

Magnetic, electromagnetic, and radiometric airborne survey data have been used in regional and local (drainage basin) scales. In a regional geoenvironmental assessment of the state of Montana, magnetic and radiometric data compiled from airborne surveys were used along with other digital geologic and geochemical data to prioritize mining districts for potential acid water generation. Probability ratio mapping was done in order to integrate the interpretation of many different digital data sets. On a more local scale, the Animas (CO) and Boulder Basin (MT) watersheds have been studied using helicopter geophysical surveys. The airborne geophysical surveys show many more structural features than the geologic maps. Combined interpretation of the geophysical data sets using the probability ratio method has resulted in identification of areas of alteration. Airborne radiometric data in the Boulder Basin area suggests that rocks with high potassium and thorium also have a high acid water buffering capacity.

Technological Power and Pollution of the Environment The increasing power of technology to destroy and disrupt the natural environment and the ecological systems upon which life depends has reduced man&apos;s margin for error in the use of this power. We must act, therefore, to deter and prevent the occurrence of future ecological disasters such as that caused on the British and French coasts by the sunken oil tanker, the TORREY CANYON, the Clinch River fish kill which occurred when a dam broke and released coal ash from a power plant operation, or that which threatened on the Clark Fork River in Montana when a strike at the Anaconda Copper Company threatened to shut down pollution control activities, thereby endangering fish and plant life on the Clark Fork River with copper waste. In the past, pollution of the environment has tended to be slow. But now, the increased power of technology to damage nature, the loss of in¬sulating space and the compression of time--all reduce our margin for error and the cushion which space and time once provided for our mistakes.
