The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated froth flotation techniques to remove heavy metals (Pb, Cu, and Zn) from southeast Missouri lead mill tailings. It has been estimated that southeast Missouri contains between 200 and 300 million st of Pb tailings stored above ground. The tailings were classified as two distinct types: (1) pre- 1968 tailings from the Old Lead Belt (some more than 100 years old) and (2) post-1968 tailings from the New Lead Belt. The objectives of the investigation were to reduce the Pb remaining in the tailings to (500 ppm (<0.05% Pb) and to attempt to recover a marketable concentrate to offset a portion of the remediation costs. The remaining dolomite-limestone would then be used as mining backfill or agricultural limestone. Bench- scale froth flotation removed, in percent, 95 Pb, 84 Cu, and 54 Zn, leaving 94% of the original weight containing, in parts per million, 400 Pb, 40 Cu, and 300 Zn from the Old Lead Belt tailings. Separate flotation tests also removed, in percent, 85 Pb, 84 Cu, and 80 Zn, leaving 75% of the original weight containing, in parts per million, 400 Pb, 200 Cu, and 500 Zn from the New Lead Belt tailings . Concentrates recovered from the Old Lead Belt were retreated to produce a final Pb concentrate containing 72% Pb with a cleaner flotation recovery of 79%. Froth flotation proved to be a viable method to remove the heavy metals.

Grinding has a marked effect on concentrator recovery and opera- ting cost, improved operation through automatic control can enhance plant performance. The correct application of automatic control can only be accomplished after the basic process variables and their effect on mill operation have been defined. This paper develops a control system for a closed circuit grinding system. Typical control systems such as feed, water flow, level and circulating load are discussed. A method of determining controllability is outlined using the calculated reaction curve technique. Various successful methods of automatic grinding control applications are discussed and future possibilities are outlined. Although this paper primarily deals with closed circuit wet grinding circuits, the principles involved can be readily applied to other processes.

It is always a pleasure for me to address a group of mining engineers. I am doubly grateful when I am allotted sufficient time to describe the total Office of Coal Research program. My remarks are directed to our total program but I trust you will all understand my emphasis of the utilization aspect of our activities since that is my portion of the program. From its inception, the Office of Coal Research has sought out creative ideas for improving our national use of coal by developing new uses, improved mining procedures, lower costs, and appropriate studies with respect to the resource itself. Quite early in the game, our Economics and Marketing Division contracted for studies with respect to New England export market, Western coal, and similar items. Our Mining and Preparation Division has successfully developed a packaged coal-fired boiler and has partially developed a packaged fluid-bed type boiler as well. Our Mining and Preparation Division is working in such diverse fields as treatment of sewage with coal and the separation of coal into distinct-petrographic constituents so that all fractions of the coal can be put to the best possible use. We would like to be doing more work on improved mining methods, better preparation techniques, and any other mining improvement that will benefit the industry and our program. The synthetic fuel plants I will describe later will operate seven days per week, 24 hours per day. We would like the mine to operate on this same sort of cycle and are prepared to support research that will lead to this.

This paper describes the use of rock index property testing to obtain rock properties that a.re useful in the design and construction planning of an underground development for civil engineering or mining projects. The index properties discussed include (1) point load; (2) Schmidt hammer hardness; (3) abrasion hardness; and (4) total hardness. The first two index properties correlate to uniaxial compressive strength and Young&apos;s modulus. Discussions are given on the relationship to rock mass properties and the integrated use with semi-empirical, geotechnical design methods. The latter two properties correlate to construction performance parameters and some experience is cited. Examples of data are presented from an index testing program carried out on siltstone, sandstone and limestone rock core samples from a deep borehole drilled in the Paradox Basin of Utah for a nuclear waste repository site investigation.

The importance of mineralogical and chemical characterization of fine particles in the fields of mineral and metallurgical processing is discussed. Emphasis is placed on electron beam analysis techniques including electron diffraction and energy dispersive analysis with special reference to the scanning trans- mission electron microscope. The correct choice of instrument depending upon particle size, composition and nature of sample is stressed and the analytica1 capabilities of different types of instruments are evaluated. Recent applications of electron beam equipment to processing problems are presented and the paper concludes with a review of new developments in the fields of surface analysis and micro-diffraction.

Due to unfavorable geological condition, excessive deformation of mine drifts occurred in a large underground copper and nickel mine. In searching for a solution, a comprehensive underground monitoring program was implemented and the opening convergence and the surrounding rock deformation were monitored. A large number of field data were collected and thoroughly analyzed. The convergence and deformation as function of time and depth were determined and a rock stability index was proposed. Based on the deformation-time and deformation-depth relations, critical deformation times and locations were identified and defined as characteristic values to be used for mine opening and support designs. The characteristic values are critical in the application of two-step supporting system, and the determination of support parameters. The application of the method developed in this study has demonstrated that this practical approach in support design and installation is effective. With the two-step supporting system, a long-term drift stability can be achieved in the mine.

A liquid and solid waste management plan for an operating uranium ore processing mill was developed to efficiently and effectively dispose of existing solid wastes and related, affected surface and ground water resources. The goal of this management plan was to achieve satisfactory clean up of these existing wastes ad their by-products as well as to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future. An existing, modern system of synthetically lined tailings ponds, constructed after many years of mill operations, now provides an approved site for the disposal and containment of waste streams currently generated by the mill. This system was thought to be readily adaptable to serve as a key element of the waste management plan. The potential presence of extra capacity in these ponds could eliminate or reduce expenditures for new facilities required solely for proper management of liquid and solid wastes generated by operations prior to construction of the modern tailings ponds as well as for a range of anticipated future operations.

Portland cement is a basic building material in every country in the world, and, fortunately, the raw materials required in its manufacture are widely distributed. Use of cement begins early in a country&apos;s development, and, because of local availability of raw materials, cement manufacture is one of the first heavy industries many countries desire. Use and manufacture of cement usually precedes other industrial materials such as steel and heavy chemicals, and consumption levels off for a long period during development of infrastructure and an economic base. With a mature economy comes a very high consumption. Per capita consumption varies ten times or more between nations (Figure 1).

I&apos;m really very pleased to be talking with you today about the environmental impacts of gold ore processing as part of this symposium on emerging process technologies for a cleaner environment. But before I talk about some of the newer developments that are coming, I would like to set the stage by reviewing some of the recent past. Over the last decade or so the U.S. gold mining industry has experienced remarkable growth, primarily in heap leaching operations, and not surprisingly there has been parallel growth of environmental regulations. At Homestake, we have had the excitement of bringing on-line a new mine embodying state-of-the-art technology and environmental planning, and during the same period the flagship of our company, the Homestake mine, has been brought into modern day compliance through the application of innovative environmental technology. This has been a learning process; in both cases we found that we had to develop new ways to meet our objectives. At our McLaughlin mine in California a major achievement was pioneering the use of pressure oxidation, or autoclaves, for refractory gold ores, and at the Homestake it was the development of a unique bio-treatment plant for wastewater. These projects were developed balancing operational goals, environmental concerns and costs, and I would submit that being cost-effective is our greatest challenge in the development of new, environmentally sound, process technology. In meeting that challenge, our job has not been made any easier by the myriad environmental laws and regulations that directly affect the design and operation of our facilities. Most of these constraints have evolved through the political process more or less independently, but in their application there often are over-lapping provisions. Adding to this complexity is the fact that action takes place in both state and federal arenas. As a result, state and federal roles sometimes become intertwined, and a good case in point is provided by various cyanide issues faced by gold producers. The vast majority of U.S. gold mining takes place in the so-called "mineral States," the western States that come under the Mining Law of 1872 as amended. This is the basic statute that provides for access and tenure to develop mineral resources on federal lands in those states. There is gold mining outside the defined mineral States, and there is also gold mining in the mineral States on private lands. Our own Homestake mine in South Dakota is one of the best examples of the latter category: located entirely on private land, it is nevertheless subject to at least 13 federal environmental statutes and some 29 federal regulatory requirements. There are also nine significant state statutory and regulatory requirements that apply. On federal lands in the mineral States there are numerous federal statutes and regulations which affect mining, over and above the current Mining Law. These, which are in addition to the laws applying to private land, include the National Environmental Protection Act and the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, among others. Still, those who advocate radical changes in the basic Mining Law would have us believe that sweeping environmental protection and reclamation provisions, not to mention new land use restrictions, are needed. Such changes could effectively prohibit mining on the federal public lands. Strict enforcement of our current Mining Law would have presented most of the abuses cited by the critics but if the Law is to be changed at all, I believe that, at a minimum, the principles of self-initiation and security of tenure embodied in the present statute should be maintained. These are critically important concepts, but there are other statutory and regulatory issues constantly before us as gold miners. The majority of the regulations in Part 75 for underground coal mines have been in effect since March of 1970, almost nine years now. Although there have been some additions each year in specific areas where the need became apparent or the statute required some action, the bulk was promulgated on March 28, 1970 for the purpose of clarifying the statutory provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Many of those regulations were derived from the Federal Mine Safety Code, or from experience gained by the Bureau of Mines in the enforcement of Public Law 552. Upon passage of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, these same regulations remained in effect and the statutory requirements of the Act placed a responsibility upon the Secretary of Labor to promulgate additional regulations in specific areas not previously covered. The Federal inspectorate has received formal training at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy in the proper application of the regulations, as well as routine retraining and special training courses subsequent to the promulgation of new regulations. With some exceptions, the vast majority of these regulations are nothing more than good mining practice. Basically, the regulatory problems are two-fold. There are a few specific regulations that, under certain circumstances, compliance is nearly, if not actually, impossible. There is non-uniform application of enforcement of regulations by the inspectorate based on opinions developed from personal experience of inspectors or lack of experience. The record is replete with examples of overzealous inspectors applying regulations that either do not exist or have been stretched far beyond the intent of the regulations.

1his paper presents a modified ordinary kriging technique referred to as the "Nearest Neighbor Kriging" (NNK). The method is a simple and practical tool to use when the ordinary kriging (OK) results are unreasonably smooth, especially when estimating recoverable ore reserves for deposits with skewed grade distributions. NNK is robust and globally unbiased like OK. However, it is more advantageous over OK because it can control some of the smoothing and conditional bias which have been the major pitfalls of OK in many grade estimation cases. The paper details the methodology of NNK and its application to a gold deposit.

The rate of adsorption of gold cyanide on activated charcoal was examined as a function of charcoal concentration and size, temperature, initial gold concentration, pH, and initial concentration of gold on the charcoal. Rate was found to be proportional to temperature, concentration of charcoal and initial gold concentration on charcoal, and to the inverse of charcoal particle size squared. Chemical zoning studies of mineralization can be useful in guiding exploration efforts. They permit one to determine the limits of mineralization and to correlate mineralized intervals in drill holes. Fahlore minerals are well suited for zoning studies because they are common minerals found in a variety of deposits, exhibit chemical diversity, and record the chemical evolution of migrating hydrothermal fluids. Zoning information in the form of metal ratios preserved in fahlore minerals was used to determine ore body limits in the Orcopampa precious metal system, Peru, and to correlate between multiple ore horizons in a sediment hosted massive sulfide (SHMS) currently under investigation. The current generations of electron microprobes provide the most efficient, accurate and economic way to analyze the tens to hundreds of sample required to successfully describe and use zoning information at the mine scale.

Just a few years ago my company was referred to as the Marion Steam Shovel Company. We still make shovels, both two and eight crawler types. The eight crawler stripping shovel appears to have been replaced by the walking dragline for overburden removal and in some cases for the mineral as well. The walking dragline appeared in the coal fields in the early 1930&apos;s. It owes its popularity today to the fact that it can cope with overburden depths in excess of 100 feet and with blasted sedimentary rock, all at an 0 & 0 cost of ± 10¢/BCY.

The building of sanitary and storm drainage sewers in urban or environmentally sensitive areas often requires the use of tunnel construction procedures. While hydraulic considerations may require only small diameters, traditional tunneling techniques make small sizes the least economical. Current state-of-the-art techniques using highly mechanized systems of pipe jacking can provide cost effective solutions to the problems of construction of small size tunnels. The characteristics of mechanized pipe jacking allow rapid advances under difficult ground conditions. The basic pipe jacking cycle is used with a variety of excavation systems to permit the contractor to satisfy engineering as well as economic parameters. These characteristics and several of the systems available are outlined.

Sodium silicate (water glass) is a modifier reagent widely used in flotation with the function of a depressant or dispersant. The interaction between sodium silicate and mineral surfaces is still not well understood. This investigation aimed to illuminate the sodium silicate action mechanism as a depressant in the flotation of the minerals quartz and calcite. The experiments were done with high-purity mineral samples in the particle size range below 147 µm. The microflotation tests in a modified Hallimond tube showed that, in all systems tested, the efficiency of sodium silicate increased with the concentration. At concentrations above 1,500 g/t, almost total depression (96% for calcite and 97% for quartz) was achieved. The variation of sodium silicate modulus did not alter the quartz flotation performance in the presence of amine (150 g/t). The most efficient depression pH range was observed between 5 and 8. Above pH 10, the depressant action of sodium silicate was negligible. The infrared spectra obtained at pH 7 after silicate contact showed the presence of the groups OH and Si-OH, both suggesting that the adsorption of the neutral species Si(OH)4, as well as siloxane groups (Si-O-Si), attributed to adsorption of polymeric species. Sharing electron pairs is the proposed adsorption mechanism between Si(OH)4 and polymeric species and the surface sites (Si-O on quartz and Ca-O on calcite). At pH 11, the electrostatic repulsion prevents the species adsorption, impairing the sodium silicate action.

"Everyone has a general idea what mixing means, but describing the mixing process is not so simple. The objective of any mixing process is to distribute and blend the materials with different characteristics, different quantities as evenly as possible resulting in a homogenous mixture. Introducing proportional movement with the optimal intensity into the materials achieves effective homogeneous mixing results. A simple one directional movement with inadequate acceleration of the materials would obviously not achieve the same mixing results. This would be more like stirring than mixing. The amount of relative movement that is introduced is a decisive factor. Circumstances for successful mixing involve distribution of all materials, and achieving the highest probability that all recipe particles located in a specific position at the beginning can be found at any random location in the mixing chamber at the end of the process. This is the only way to ensure that a consistent result is achieved every time mixing is repeated.THREE-PART CYCLE The mixing cycle occurs in three phases; charging the mixer, the mixing process, and discharging. The sequence in which the individual materials to be mixed are filled into the mixer can have a huge impact on the efficiency of the mixing cycle. The mixing cycle overlaps the charging process and the discharge cycle follows the mixing cycle. To achieve optimum results, effective discharging methods should be taken into consideration to avoid risks of segregation. Costs for energy and wear should be as low as possible and finally, it is very important that the mixing cycle takes place as quickly as possible. In concrete or paste backfill production, selecting the best mixing technology is crucial for both the quality of the final product to be blended and the efficiency of the production process. The optimum mixing system is one that rapidly disperses all ingredients evenly throughout the mixing trough and completely surrounds all the course or fine aggregate particles with the slurry cement particles. Specific for paste production it’s the mixers job to also break-down unconditioned tailings to achieve consistent paste viscosity or measured spread. Many paste and concrete formulas also involve small quantities of chemical additives which also must be evenly distributed effectively. The time required per mixing cycle as well as the costs of energy, wear and maintenance will determine the economy of the concrete production."

Thousands of years ago, Chinese water well drillers developed a technique for punching holes in the ground by lifting massive metal bits and letting them fall against the rock. With diligence, they could pound away about 2 feet a day. The Chinese drillers pounded holes in the ground this way for almost 2000 years. In the 1860&apos;s, French water well drillers developed a perforated bit moistened by fluids pumped into the hole through a hollow rod. The fluids carried the cuttings from the hole and spared the Frenchmen the task of bailing them out by hand.

An Overall View of the Japanese Ferroalloys Industry 1) Depressed Demand for Ferroalloys: In Japan consumption of ferroalloys in the last ten years has decreased, although there has been some fluctuation from year to year. During this term production figures of the steel industry, which are closely related to consumption of ferroalloys, are as follows: Shipment of steel products for the domestic market has declined gradually from 69 million tons in 1979, which was the peak year for steel production, to 60.3 million tons in 1982 and 60.4 million tons in 1983, the level of 1978. In addition, exports also have been a downward trend since 1976, which was the peak year with tonnage of 34 million tons, to 28 million tons in 1982 and 31 million tons in 1983.
