Meerschaum or sepiolite is employed principally in tobacco pipes and cigar and cigarette holders, although a few other uses of minor importance are Down. The unique value of a meerschaum pipe is derived from the owner's pleasure in watching the color deepen with smoking and in having the color "set" at the desired shade. The name "meerschaum" (German for "sea foam") is applied because the material, when pure and dry, will float on water. Owing to its resemblance to the porous, bonelike structure of the cuttlefish, or septa, it is also known as sepiolite. There are a few scattered deposits of meerschaum in. the United States which have yielded a small product ion, but the world's supply of the' material is obtained fined principally from Asia Minor, Meerschaum deposits near Eski-Shehir, Turkey, are said to have been worked 2,000 years ago, but commercial exploitation is a development of the last hundred years DESCRIPTION AND PROPERTIES Meerschaum is a hydrous magnesium silicate (H4Mg2Si3010) having the following theoretical analysis: Si02, 60.8 percent; MgO, 27.1 percent; H20, 12.1 percent. It is a soft. (H.2 - 2.5), fine-grained, earthy, white, gray, or yellow material. It is very light weight when pure (specific gravity, 1 to 2) and is highly absorbent. Because of its porosity the proportion of water present in the mineral is affected by the humidity'of the atmosphere. In a moist atmosphere the water content may be as much as 21.7 percent. Then wet the material is soft and somewhat plastic. When dried again it becomes lard and tough. The toughness is especially apparent in some forms that have a fibrous or leathery texture.

"Three types of respiratory apparatus namely, gas masks, hose masks, and self-contained oxygen-breathing apparatus - are now commonly used for protection from noxious gases, vapors, and smokes or ristes, but no particular type can be selected as best for all conditions. Many factors must be considered in connection with each situation, so that each must be considered as a problem in itself. Following are concise statements for comparing the types:Gas masks are the simplest and easiest to wear, also the least cumber-sore; but they protect only in comparatively low concentrations of noxious gases and should never be used where the air contains less than 16 per cent of oxygen. Special masks give protection from one gas or class of gases, but may give no protection against another gas or class of gases.Hose masks protect in any irrespirable atmosphere, but are somewhat cumbersome, the length of hose limiting the distance a wearer may go from fresh air. They are serviceable also where a supply of pure air moves with the wearer, as where a locomotive engineer in a smoky tunnel is using a hose mask supplied with air from the compressed air line of the locomotive. Hose masks consume no chemicals or materials and so are not limited in the time they may be used.Self-contained oxygen-breathing apparatus protect in any irrespirable atmosphere, but their weight is cumbersome, they can be used only by trained men, and frequent attention must be given them to maintain good working condition. Synopsis Underground stone mining Is an emerging sector of the U.S. mining industry. As this expansion takes mines under deeper cover, and as more efficient mining methods are utilized, effective stone pillar design methods will become even more Important. Current design practices are examined and a discussion of safe mine layouts is presented as a first approach towards weighing the demands for increased production against increased risk. Risks to underground stone-mine workers include rib Instabilities, pillar failures and roof falls. Seventy-two stone-mine pillar designs were examined. Pillars with width to height ratios of less than 1.5 appear more likely to fail when subjected to excessive stress levels. When width to height ratios fall below 1.0 defects in the pillars, such as through-running discon¬tinuities, can have a significant influence on stability. Discontinuity persistence, dip, material properties and orientation are also important determining factors in pillar strength. During the past three years the number of active underground stone mines in the U.S.A. has ranged between 90 and 100. This number is expected to increase as the crushed stone industry responds to growing demands for its products.1 As more of the industry moves to benefit from the advantages of underground mining production from underground stone mines is expected to increase above its current level of approximately 66 000 000 r/year. Parker2 identified four advantages of underground mining operations: (1) surface developments, zoning laws and environmental concerns are often less of an issue; (2) stripping and restoration requirements are eliminated; (3) additional reserves are often available beneath the quarry floor, under pit slopes or under an adjoining property; and (4) space is created for secondary use. Underground mines enjoy the added benefits of work in a constant underground climate, rather than in the variable surface climate, minimization of community concerns by placement of the crushing, sizing and stowing operations underground and reduction of surface vibration concerns through smaller blasts. The drawbacks of underground mining include added health and safety hazards for the stone miners, whose health can suffer from increased exposure to falls of ground, airborne contaminants and fog in large underground openings. Injuries from falls of ground in stone mines have occasionally exceeded the incidence rates for other mineral resources mined underground. 3 Existing underground stone operations, by comparison with stone operations a decade ago, mine more stone at a faster rate and with larger equipment. Because of high demand mines face increased pressure to yield more stone per production blast. A majority of the miners use the V-cut blasting pattern, which limits the depth or pull for each shot to about 4 m. Therefore, to produce more stone, either the mines must work more faces or existing faces must be enlarged. The enlargement of underground openings poses problems in the maintenance o€ strata stability, First, the widths of the mine entries partially control the amount of sag or deflection that any given roof beam can withstand before failure. This deflection can take pi ace quickly after an opening is excavated or much later as weathering processes form additional, thinner beams. Because increased deflection increases the potential for roof beam failure, there is a limit to how wide a room can safely be made. These limits depend on local geological and stress conditions and, to some extent, the cost effectiveness of roof-bolting. Given these room width limitations, underground stone mines have placed more attention on expansion of production through benching where mining thicknesses permit. The heights of rooms partially control the strength characteristics of adjacent pillars: as the room height increases for a given pillar width the pillar width-to-height ratio (w/h) decreases. In general, stone pillars are very strong, but when the width-to height ratio diminishes the potential for pillar rib instabilities and pillar failures increases (see Fig. 1). [ ] In the underground environment the desire to utilize wider rooms, higher benches and multi-level mining results in the potential for unstable ground conditions. Although the number of failed pillars is currently very low, the potential for additional failures will grow if more slender pillars are developed, especially under deeper cover, with wider mining sections and in multi-level operations. The Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The Bureau's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

"Geologic materials emit transient noises when stressed /1/. The rate and pattern of these transient noises or acoustic emissions (A.E. hereafter) depend on the stages of deformation of the material /2/. It has been demonstrated that rock/coal fracture processes under stress consist of three distinctive stages--crack initiation, propagation and ultimate fracture--and that coalescence of numerous cracks leads to ultimate failure rather than the propagation of a single crack /2,3/. This paper presents an analysis of fracture formation in rock/coal specimens subjected to straight wedge indentors using A.E. technique.The effect of specimen geometry, wedge indentor angle, confining pressure, and material anisotropy on fracture type (tension, extension, and shear crack), fracture length, and fracture intensity were studied. Two types of material mainly Berea sandstone and Coal Berg No. 2 coal were used in this study. Prior to the experiment the mechanical properties of both sandstone and coal were determined using rectangular specimen (Figures 1 a) in standard compression tests and are given in Table 1. In this study cylindrical and rectangular specimens were first prepared to proper dimensions of 2 in. x 1.5 in. and 3 in. x 1.5 in. x 1.5 in. (5.08 cm x 3.81 cm and 7.62 cm x 3.81 cm x 3.81 cm), respectively and then instrumented with SR-4 strain gages as shown in Figure 1. The instrumented specimens were then tested under four distinct load boundary conditions as illustrated in Figure 2. During a typical experiment the instrumented specimen was placed in a specially designed loading jig (Figure 3) where a predetermined lateral pressure was applied mechanically to the specimen by adjusting the inner plate of the confining chamber via screw while monitoring strains in the specimen. Using rock/coal elastic constants and measured strains, a predeter¬mined lateral pressure was applied to the specimen. Then a vertical load was applied by the straight edge of a wedge indentor attached to the upper platen of the universal loading machine via ball and socket arrangement (Figure 4). The arrangement allowed uniform application of load in a straight line manner on the surface of the specimen. During the test a number of parameters namely strains, load and A.E. rates were recorded (Figures 5a-b)."

Urban refuse that was mechanically separated at the U S Bureau of Mines pilot plant in College Park, Md., was successfully evaluated for its fuel values using standard coal analysis methods. Analyses performed on refuse samples taken from five sample points included moisture, ash, sulfur, chlorine, and heating value. It was recommended that characterization of the combustible portion of urban refuse by standard coal analysis procedures should be widely adopted.

A factorially designed, hydraulic fragmentation experiment using a high-pressure water jet was conducted on concrete blocks. Three levels of pressure, standoff distance, and impact angle and two levels of traverse time and surface condition were used. Three variables were measured: depth of penetration, volume of material removed, and width of slot. Three stepwise linear regression equations were developed from the jet parameters and the physical properties of the concrete. The three basic equations, describing the significant jet parameters and physical properties, were developed into 15 predictor equations, five for each variable investigated. Direct regression equations were also developed for each variable investigated to show the result of increasing or decreasing each significant variable. Energy efficiencies were developed for the experiment and for each significant factorial variable.

In its search for a highly productive mining system for anthracite beds pitching from 100 to 200, where conventional mobile equipment cannot be used) the Bureau initiated a longwall project by introducing a shearer drum cutter loader of European origin. Because of the undulating nature of the roof and floor and changing bed thicknesses, the machine proved inflexible and extra work was required in lifting bottom coal and blasting top coal.

Tunnel-driving is recognized as a hazardous occupation; adequate support of roof and sides for preventing accidents from falling material is usually one of the most important safety problems. Where extraordinary conditions of sand and water are found, this problem becomes even more difficult. Tunneling at the Tioga No.2 mine was stopped when a 22-foot bed of water-saturated, fine gray sand was encountered. The tunnel, designed to house an ore-conveyor belt, was being driven from both ends. Driving was extremely difficult at both the upper and lower faces when the sand horizon was reached. A distance of 178 feet remained between the faces. Heavy pressures deformed the steel-supporting rings at the upper face, and there was an inrush of mud and sand at the lower face.

The Ellington manganese deposit in Reynolds County J Mo., had been known for some time; and limited exploration, consisting of test pitting and sinking a shaft 54 feet deep on the property, had been done by private interests. Late in 1941, the Bureau of Mines cleaned, deepened, and sampled many of the existing pits and dug and sampled 27 new ones. The shaft was unwatered and sampled, and several pockets of manganese ore were trenched to determine their extent. Samples were analyzed and beneficiation tests on 1 ton of the ore were made at the Rolla, Mo., station of the Bureau of 'Mines. Results of the investigation indicated that the deposit was small and low in manganese content.

Provide an effective method for "soft" soldering aluminum and aluminum alloys using conventional tin-lead solder alloys and flukes. The Problem In the past, it was virtually impossible to solder aluminum and aluminum alloys using standard tin-lead soldering systems (solder and flux) due to the presence of an aluminum oxide surface film which forms instantly on aluminum and aluminum alloys when these are exposed to air. The tenacious and stable oxide film enables aluminum-base materials to maintain their bright luster. But the film also prevents the required wetting and spreading of solder on the substrate, causing the loss of adhesion between the solder and the substrate. Enhance hydraulic fragmentation technology by developing alternative grout sealing methods. Traditional grout scaling methods rely on chemical adhesion and require large contact areas to restrict high-pressure fluids. Fluid injection into rock requires economical and effective seals. With economical and effective seals, rock is easily fractured in tension by high-pressure fluid injection (fig. 1). Approach An innovative grouting technique was developed and tested by the Bureau. Slowly hydrating expanding chemicals are placed within a borehole and around a section of high-pressure tubing. Testing was conducted using 9/16-inch-OD smooth-walled injection tubes in 1.5-inch-ID holes. Seal lengths weir less than 10 inches and curing times were less than 24 hours.

"It has been recently suggested that the exceptionally high antitumor and antibacterial activity of natural fredericamycin A (FMA) is related to its ability to spontaneously generate the superoxide anion (02-) and hydroxyl (""OH) radicals in aerobic solutions [Hilton, B. D., Misra, R., & Zweier, J. L. (1986) Biochemistry 25, 5533]. With a view to understand the mechanistic details, attempts were made to reproduce earlier electron spin resonance (ESR) evidence for the oxygenated free radical formation in well-aerated solutions of natural FMA in dimethyl sulfoxide and dilute H 20 2• Little or no evidence was obtained for the formation of the 0 2- and methoxy (""OCH3) radicals, while the detected formation of the 'OH and methyl ('CH3) radicals was attributable largely to mechanisms not involving FMA. These results thus reopen the T question regarding the mechanism of its exceptionally high tumoricidal-bacteriocidal activity. This paper reports on an electron spin resonance (ESR) investigation of the formation of oxygenated free radicals in solutions of natural fredericamycin A (abbreviated as FMA) which has recently been reported to be a highly potent anti¬tumor antibiotic (Pandey et al., 1981; Warnick-Pickle et al., 1981). The impetus for this undertaking was provided by recent reports (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986) suggesting that the strong tumoricidal activity with high therapeutic—toxic index of FMA was related to its ability for the spontaneous generation of superoxide anion (02-) and hydroxyl (OH) radicals. For example, the suggested mechanism for the formation of 02- by FMA was (Hilton et al., 1986)FMA-OH + O2 FMA-O + H+ + 02-Here FMA—OH is simply the FMA molecule emphasizing the —OH moiety which becomes FMA-O, the free radical rep¬resenting the oxidized form of the drug. While some other highly effective anticancer drugs in current clinical application, such as bleomycin, are also thought to exert their antitumor effects via the formation of reactive drug-based or oxygenated free radicals (Carmichael et al., 1985; Gianni et al., 1983), FMA was considered unique in that only in this case the free radical formation was thought to be spontaneous, rather than through a metal- or an enzyme-activated process (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986). Thus it was suggested (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986) that FMA could be the forerunner of a new class of anticancer drugs. However, we noted that while the hypothesis seemed plausible, the reported ESR spectral evidence appeared to be ambiguous. Because of the high significance of the earlier conclusions (Stinson, 1986), we undertook a systematic ESR study of the radical formation in FMA solutions, and as discussed below, our conclusions disagree with those reported earlier."

Provide reasonably priced, reliable fire protection for AN-FO haulers. Approach An automatic fire sensing and suppression system for AN-FO haulers was developed and on-vehicle tested. How It Works The system works in two ways to protect personnel from dangerous and unpredictable AN-FO fires. First the system senses and suppresses fires on the truck before they spread to the AN-FO in the bunker. This design was chosen because AN-FO truck fires generally start when combustible liquids (such as diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid or lubricating oils) are ignited by hot surfaces mainly on three areas: the engine, the transmission or the power take-off. These fires are quickly sensed by a linear temperature sensor strung throughout these three areas. The system then warns the operator and automatically suppresses the fire by discharging 30 pounds of multipurpose dry chemical extinguishing agent through a network of fixed hoses and nozzles. Second, this system includes six spot thermal sensors mounted inside the bunker on the truck to monitor the AN-FO temperature in case a fire does spread to the bunker area. The Bureau of Mines investigated the concentration characteristics of high-clay sylvinite ores from potash companies operating in the Permian basin near Carlsbad, N. Mex. These ores, containing 14 to 19 percent K20 and 3 to 5 percent clay slimes, cannot be effectively processed by current commercial flotation methods because of their high clay content. A solution to this problem was shown to be the use of two-stage moderate scrubbing conditions for clay disaggregation and removal as opposed to strenuous attritioning. Bench-scale beneficiation techniques for recovering potash minerals by flotation from the scrubbed material resulted in acceptable product grades and recoveries. By using a coarse grind, emphasis was placed on production of premium granular and coarse products. Flotation results showed that concentrates of 59.6 to 60.4 percent K.0 values can be obtained. Continuous pilot plant beneficiation techniques for recovering potash minerals by flotation resulted in concentrates containing 58.8 to 59.8 percent K20 with recoveries of 69.7 to 81.4 percent of the K20.

Provide reasonably priced, reliable fire protection for loading shovels. Approach An automatic fire, sensing and suppression system using both dry chemical and Halon 1301 was developed. It is more rugged than similar industrial-type fire protection systems. How It Works Temperature sensors detect heat from a fire, and trigger the system. These sensors are located inside the machinery house and under the house and shovel frame where it rotates around the crawler chassis ring gear. An alarm is sounded, and extinguishing agents are released either in the machinery house or in the ring gear area. The system can also be triggered by a manual control. If the fire Is detected in the machinery house, all power is shut down to the motor-generator sets, ventilation fan, and all electrical controls. Doors are automatically closed. After a delay to allow time for the ventilation fan to stop, Halon 1301, a gaseous fire extinguishing agent, is released inside the machinery house until it reaches a concentration of about 7 percent. This concentration is sufficient to extinguish a fire, but isn't toxic to personnel

The natural marine environment can be divided into four basic categories: the air-sea interface, the water zone, the seafloor, and the subbottom. Efforts are being made to accumulate data to delineate the conditions in each of these areas and to conduct engineering studies which will determine how these environmental parameters affect the mining process. Laboratory facilities have been constructed and equipment and techniques for scientific data collection and laboratory research have been developed. Major emphasis is being placed on studying the subbottom material. The objective of this emphasis is to study the engineering properties of marine placer deposits in order to assess their influence on the design and performance of the various mining subsystems involving penetration, excavation, transportation, and disposal. Presented are the results of engineering properties tests on a placer simulant which is currently being used for model and prototype testing of coring tools. The effect of these engineering properties on penetrability, core recovery, and sample recovery is discussed.

Five makes of expansion-type shells and two types of bolts (mild-steel and high-strength) were used in 30 tests made in sandstone and shale roof, The results show that the anchorage obtained in both the sandstone and shale were stronger than either type of bolt. That is, the yield loads of both bolt types were exceeded before excessive anchor slip occurred. A relationship for evaluating the anchorage effectiveness of 3/8-inch-diameter, expansion-type bolts is presented. A comparison of test results indicates that the anchorage effectiveness of 5/8-inch- and 3/4-inch-diameter expansion-type bolts did not differ appreciably.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop and improve mining methods for mining thin coal beds, to increase productivity, and to increase the recovery of coal. German coal planers and a modified longwall system of mining were introduced into American mines and are bringing about increased productivity and better recovery as compared with the conventional methods displaced. Since the first installation, 4 additional planers have been purchased by coal companies and over 1-1/2 mil¬lion tons of coal has been mined by them, using the modified longwall mining method. INTRODUCTION Except from 1932 to 1934, the growth of mechanical loading in underground bituminous-coal and lignite mines in the United States has increased steadily. The amount of coal loaded mechanically in underground mines has increased from 0.3 percent in 1923 to 79.6 percent of the total underground production in 1953.3/ The use of new and improved mining machines and auxiliary equipment, together with new techniques in mining methods, usually has resulted in increased productivity.
