"Newmont Mining Corporation’s Carlin (“Carlin”) operation processes roaster feed through a double rotator, dry grinding mill following secondary crushing. Metso Process Technology & Innovation (“PTI”) was involved in a review of crushing and dry grinding circuit operations in August 2009. A number of opportunities for increased throughput were identified in the PTI study.Extended plant trials were conducted in July 2010 to provide justification for possible circuit modifications and if needed, additional equipment. The trials confirmed that a finer crusher product would reduce the build-up of material ahead of the coarse grinding chamber in the double-rotator. Also revealed were material transport and airflow restrictions in the dry grinding circuit that resulted in a high circulating load.The secondary crushing plant demonstrated it was capable of reducing the amount of +¾” material in the mill feed thus increasing dry grinding throughput. However, wet and sticky feed affected screening efficiency resulting in low utilisation of the existing crusher capacity. The open circuit configuration also made it difficult to control crushing circuit product size.For the dry grinding circuit, changes in grinding media size, transfer grate design and increased airflow were recommended to reduce circulating load issues and increase circuit capacity. This paper summarises the crushing and grinding circuit review, the extended site trials performed by PTI and the improvements in dry grinding operation that resulted from this study."

The zinc refinery of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Ltd. went through a major modernization in 1993, when the roaster and the calcine and fume leach circuits were replaced by a new Sherritt zinc pressure leach plant. The HBMS plant, in Flin Ron, Manitoba, represents the first commercial application of the Sherritt two-stage zinc pressure leach process, with /00% of the zinc concentrate feed processed in autoclaves. The process design of the new plant required definition of the deportments of elements such as antimony, arsenic, chlorine, cobalt, fluorine, germanium, magnesium, manganese, selenium, tellurium and thallium. This paper describes the deportment of these elements in the commercial zinc plant during the first nine months of pressure leach operation, and compares these results with operations prior to the introduction of pressure leaching, and with the results of tests carried out in the She"itt laboratory during the process development phase.

The conventional jarosite precipitation process with neutralization by zinc calcine is widely utilized in the zinc industry. However, it has a significant drawback of causing losses of valuable metals like zinc, lead and silver to the jarosite. This comes mainly from the content of these metals in the calcine used for neutralization. As the zinc plants today want to maximize metal recoveries and minimize the amount of residues, this matter has become more and more relevant for zinc producers. Outotec developed and patented in early 2000 an improved version of the jarosite precipitation process in which the need for neutralization can be minimized, thus the metal losses to the jarosite also can be minimized. At the same time, the iron content of the jarosite increases and the amount of produced jarosite is smaller. The main feature of this process is to start the precipitation from ferrous iron after having reduced all the iron by zinc concentrate in a separate step before jarosite precipitation. Iron is then oxidised back to the ferric form simultaneously with jarosite precipitation. By this method, the formation of sulphuric acid is only half that compared to the conventional method and the need for calcine for neutralization can be avoided. High mixing and oxygen dispersion capability are needed in this jarosite precipitation process. Such capabilities are found in the Outotec OKTOP® reactor series. High performance reactors are not only needed to generate high quality precipitates, but also to maximize oxygen utilization; i.e., to minimize operation costs. Outotec’s latest development in this area is the OKTOP® plant product in which not only the reactors, but also all the accessories are designed, manufactured and delivered by Outotec. Size by size recoveries and pentlandite liberation data from image analysis were used to evaluate plant tests of pentlandite flotation and pentlandite/pyrrhotite middlings flotation from pyrrhotite in a circuit treating low grade magnetic intermediates at the Strathcona Mill. Raising the pH with lime gave improved selectivity for liberated pentlandite but there were major losses of middlings unless the circuit was pulled hard indicating the need for finer regrinding. However, size by size recoveries at the normal regrind showed that, while the pentlandite recovery improved in the finer ranges, the pyrrhotite recovery also increased leading to little selectivity in any size range. A much finer regrind gave greatly improved selectivity in all size classes suggesting that 'surface polishing' as well as liberation effects were being seen. Using liberation data from image analysis of the products, surface polishing accounted for over 99 % of the improvement in selectivity. Unreasonable recoveries of more highly liberated particles were observed for liberation analysis by volume fraction but showed the expected trend in recovery when the analysis was based on surface liberation. The surface liberation data showed that the improved pentlandite recoveries after finer regrinding were to more than 90 % caused by improved liberation with the remainder contributed by surface polishing effects. The practical implications of this work are that i) the comparison of particle grades with product grades allows to estimate the effect of regrinding on co-flotation/entrainment, ii) surface liberation models should be used for evaluating recoverabilities by flotation and iii) regrind circuits may be set up to ensure that all particles go through the mill or that only the coarse fraction is reground depending on the surface scrubbing found to be required.

Sub-stoichiometric roasting of arsenic-bearing copper ores is a well established practice. However, ores containing calcium commonly prove challenging where very low arsenic levels are desired, but the reasons for this phenomenon have largely been speculative. In the course of treating arsenicbearing copper ores by partial roasting in fluid bed reactors, XPS encountered one of these Ca-bearing ores which proved a challenge to roast to acceptably low levels of arsenic. Mineralogical examination of the calcines using a combination of XRD (X-ray diffraction), QEMSCAN (Quantitative Evaluation of Materials by Scanning Electron Microscope) and EPMA (Electron Probe Micro-Analysis) helped to identify the arsenic bearing species and assisted in developing a workable theory on the sequence of reactions occurring during the roast. With the assistance of thermo-chemical modelling, this allowed adjustment of the roasting conditions to minimise the amount of arsenic retention in the calcine in spite of the presence of calcium in the ore and advance the roasting program to a commercially acceptable solution.

In this study, the fusion zone microstructure of tungsten inert gas weld of a directionally solidified NhAl-base alloy was examined by the standard metallographic techniques involving the use of optical, analytical scanning and transmission electron microscopes equipped with energy dispersive spectrometer. Fusion zone cracking was observed to be closely associated with interdendritic secondary solidification microconstituents identified as consisting of y, y' and NiMo (Y) phases. Depression of solidification temperature to the terminal ternary eutectic reaction temperature of the system during cooling is suggested as an important factor contributing to the fusion zone cracking.

The term ?cost? is too small when describing the destructive power of safety incidents for mining companies. Breaches in employee or environmental safety are felt way beyond the bottom-line: human life can be taken; ecosystems tarnished; the ire of peoples, media and government inflamed; significant halting of production; and high levels of legal and financial challenges. According to a recent survey of Mining executivesi, ?ensuring workforce safety? was the most important issues identified above any other, with a plurality of 31 percent, reigning above capital projects, product efficiency, and equipment reliability. We accept that safety is a most paramount issue, yet for many reasons we keep approaching the problem the same way we have in the past. We need to stop doing the same things decade over decade and try something new. New innovations are significantly changing the fundamentals of how mining companies explore, excavate, produce, refine and distribute their valuable commodities. Technologies such as visualization, analytics, location awareness, and gaming simulation are making these enterprises smarter. Now, attention turns to an area we?ve long held as integral to our business: safety. By using the same breakthrough technologies that are changing our business, we can now boldly imagine ? and credibly strive for ? a world of zero incidents.

"Sulphuric acid atmospheric leaching of nickel saprolite / garnierite ores was proposed in the early twentieth century, prior to the development of the pressure acid leaching process for limonite ores. Sulphuric acid leaching with alkali addition for iron precipitation as jarosite has been considered periodically since the early 1970s, shortly after the development of the jarosite process for iron control in zinc refining. In the late 1990’s a series of flowsheets were proposed and tested involving simultaneous atmospheric leaching, iron precipitation and acid regeneration. These were considered particularly suited to sequential leaching of limonite and saprolite ores. A number of laterite sulphuric acid leaching processes utilising this chemistry have been put into commercial operation. Similar sequential leaching flow sheets involving precipitation of iron as goethite were also developed and piloted. This paper will firstly describe some of the important historical developments of both the jarosite and goethite processes. It will then provide descriptions of the commercialised processes involving alkali jarosite/alunite precipitation, with special emphasis on the downstream impurity removal requirements necessary for efficient recovery of nickel and cobalt from solution.INTRODUCTION This paper is a summary and extension of previous works with which the authors have been involved, on the subject of sulphuric acid leaching of nickel laterites (Adams, et al., 2004), (Liu H. , Gillaspie, Lewis, Neudorf, & Barnett, 2004), (White, Miller, & Napier, 2006), (White, 2009), (White & Gillaspie, 2013), (White & Gillaspie, 2015). Some of the historical developments of both the jarosite and goethite leaching-precipitation processes will be described, followed by a description of the commercialised sequential nickel laterite leaching processes, involving alkali jarosite/alunite precipitation and acid regeneration, with a comparison to the equivalent goethite based processes. These will include Jarosite Atmospheric Leaching (JAL), Goethite Atmospheric Leaching (GAL) and combined Pressure Acid Leaching – Atmospheric Leaching, termed EPAL®. There will also be an explanation of the downstream impurity removal requirements necessary for efficient recovery of nickel and cobalt from solution."

"Flotation process has had less success to recover nickel from laterite ores. Nickel in laterite ores is often finely disseminated in various minerals in very fine size. Therefore, fine grinding should be used to liberate nickel containing particles. Particles resulted from fine grinding are often very fine, and recovery of such particles is generally low using conventional flotation methods. One option to overcome this problem is enhancing the particle-bubble interaction by increasing the particle size and forming flocs. Selective flocculation of fine particle can be therefore the key to enhance the flotation performance of low grade laterite ores.INTRODUCTIONThe majority of the world’s nickel resources occur as laterite ores which are complex, low grade and expensive to treat using conventional smelting and high temperature and/or high pressure autoclave methods (Xu et al., 2013). While about 70% of the nickel resources are contained in laterites, only 40% of the world’s nickel production comes from these ores. Researchers have tried to improve the nickel laterite flotation recovery by using a number of feed preparation techniques. For example, in a study on a laterite ore sample from Australia, flotation tests on a narrow sized fraction of 38-75 µm resulted in only a small increase in the nickel content, from 1.0% to 1.4% (Quast et al., 2015a). In fact, no physical separation technique (including flotation) has been able to dramatically upgrade nickel in laterite ores (Quast et al., 2015b). Thus the challenge of processing low grade nickel laterite ores still exists. This paper aims to explore the possibility of applying selective aggregation in pre-concentrating of valuable minerals in nickel laterite ores."

Bubbles play an important role in many industrial processes. In a Hall-Heroult cell, used for aluminum production, bubbles contribute to induce flow in the cell. The induced flow is important for the thermal balance of the cell as well as for the distribution and dissolution of the alumina. The existence of the bubble layer does not have advantages only. It increases the voltage of the cell and causes deformation along the cryolite-molten aluminum interface. The role of the anode inclination in the behaviour of the bubble layer as well as in the hydrodynamics of the bath is not clearly understood. In this work, the effect of the anode inclination angle on the bubble driven flow is studied in an industrial scale air-water model. The inclination angle is varied up to 5° from the horizontal. The instantaneous flow field is captured by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system. The mean velocity fields were calculated by ensembleaveraging the instantaneous velocity fields measured at different time. The existence of the counter-flow in the interpolar space and the vortex in the side channel has been confirmed. Furthermore it has been observed that the effect of anode slope on the velocity field is weak.

An investigation was carried out by Mintek to investigate the influence of a range of alloying additions (vanadium, cobalt, zirconium, antimony and germanium) on the formability and hardenability of alloys with gold content >90 wt%. This paper reports on the hardening mechanisms that can be utilised to increase the hardness of gold (>90 wt% Au) by conventional alloying, as well as the hardening effect obtained by alloying with specific elements. Preparation methods for the alloys are described, which include the steps of melting, annealing, quenching, cold working and age hardening. Focus is given specifically on alloys that were developed at Mintek with a gold content >90 wt%, which are not only harder, but exhibit good resistance to tarnishing and corrosion.

Fuel cells have tremendous potential as power sources but much fundamental research is still required. One key component of the research is the experimental set-up used. In particular, the placement of the reference electrode is extremely significant in measuring the half-cell overpotential of solid oxide fuel cells, since differences in area, misalignments, and also differences in the kinetics of the working and counter electrodes can cause both scaling errors and frequency distortions of the measured impedance. The impedance of thin solid electrolyte cells of different electrode geometries has been calculated using the finite element method and the results compared to experimental values obtained for the oxygen reduction reaction on platinum.

"In addition to the actual energy consumed, billing is dependent on the peak load and the power factor. The lower the power factor goes, the higher will be the penalty the consumer pays. The principles of a power factor regulator, the two ways of improving the power factor and methods for calculating the capacitor values required will be described.The rate structure of the utility company is founded on three cornerstones: the energy consumed during a given period of time and two penalties imposed when the power factor is low or the power demand is high. Even though the normal consumption of a customer might be 10 kW, with a peak demand of 20 kW only once a month, the wiring and associated equipment at the input to the customer's plant will have to accommodate this peak demand. The power company has no means of forecasting these demands and cannot therefore provide the additional equipment necessary. So it exacts a penalty, and the customer must take all possible steps to avoid these peak power demands. This can be accomplished by using an automatic peak load regulator which will selectively disconnect the loads which are not essential in the operation of a plant .The principles of such a controller will be described.Principles of power factor regulatorsThe operating principles of a power factor regulator will now be described. It might be asked why the power factor of an electrical installation in a mine, or a factory, should be corrected at all, but there is a simple answer. Introduction The Hedley mine, perhaps better known as- the Nickel Plate mine, is one of the outstanding properties of southern British Columbia. Discovered in 1898 by Woollison and Arundell, prospectors, the property was bonded in 1899 to M. K. Rodgers for the Marcus Daly Estate, of Butte, and development was started the same year. From the high grade of the ore outcrop, and its colour, due to oxidation of the arsenopyrite, it was not difficult to open up and trace the showing. The Nickel Plate ore-shoot, which apparently had been easy to follow on surface, was more difficult to trace underground. In 1903, prospecting on an adjoining property, the Sunnyside, showed commercial ore at surface, but it was only after two years' work that the ore-body was defined and shipments started. From this property, $1,200,000 have been taken out. Prospecting was also carried on on the IXL, Climax, Copper Cliff, Mound, Bulldog, Exchange, Silver Plate, Gold Plate, and other properties, all of which had surface showings, but up to date only the Nickel Plate, Iron Duke, Morning, and Sunnyside have produced commercial ore. In 1904, the Bulldog looked like a very promising mine, but it failed to make good. In 1905, the Sunnyside No. 1 was in the limelight, but it also failed to make the grade. In 1906, an outcrop on the Sunnyside No. 3 looked interesting. Subsequent work. on this claim produced $840,000, and at the same time ore which yielded $400,000 was mined from the Sunnyside No. 4. In 1908, the Nickel Plate ore-body entered a lean zone and, as the diamond drill failed to give satisfactory results, the Daly Estate, after making a profit of $1,151,000, sold the property to the Hedley Gold Mining Company, Limited, for $760,000, retaining, however, a large interest.

The initial attempt to gain access to the potash beds was unsuccessful, however, subsequent attempts were successful and today there are ten operating potash mines in Saskatchewan. In this paper we will provide a brief overview of the historical and current Potash industry in Saskatchewan.

Following the closure of the Glencore Zinc Brunswick mine, the Glencore Brunswick Smelter has transitioned to treating external feeds, and currently treats a number of secondary Pb-Zn concentrates. Processing these concentrates has in some cases been challenging due to the diverse mineralogy of the feeds. Certain feeds are difficult to ignite or show inadequate sulphur removal during oxidation on the sinter strand, while in other cases, combinations of feeds produce a sinter with unsuitable properties for further handling. This paper discusses two methods developed in collaboration with XPS Consulting & Testwork Services to characterize these feeds prior to processing them and to identify which ones are most likely to pose challenges during processing.
