"Exploration in most areas of Canada has to contend with problems posed by glacial overburden. In many areas exploration for gold has been based on the sampling of tills, frequently by deep overburden drilling, and analyses of heavy mineral concentrates. Notwithstanding the significant role that till geochemistry has played in the discovery of some important gold deposits over the last few years, increased appreciation of the nature of the glacial history and stratigraphy and the character of gold within till has led to the recognition of a number of ways whereby the effectiveness of exploration can be improved upon.In order for till geochemistry to be useful in exploration, a number of conditions must be fulfilled, including:1. mineralization, or alteration halo related to mineralization, subcropping at the bedrock/overburden interface;2. glacial erosion and dispersal of a recognizable signature of mineralization into the glacial sediments;3. preservation of glacial sediments containing this geochemical component (trace metal or mineral) at positions subsequently selected for sampling (normally drill sites);4. correct identification of specific till units and associated ice movement history;5. collection of adequately large and representative samples;6. appropriate sample preparation and processing;7. appropriate geochemical analyses; and8. correct data processing and interpretation.While we have no control over the first two geological conditions, and only limited control over till availability, we can control the quality and thoroughness of sampling, sample identification, sample preparation, analysis and interpretation. In particular attention needs to be focussed on obtaining a large enough sample to be adequately representative, an unbiased sample must be collected, together with appropriate sample processing, analysis, data processing and interpretation. It is considered that by modifying or extending existing approaches to gold exploration the chances of exploration success can be increased. In particular, analyses of both the heavy mineral and minus 63 µ m fractions of till is recommended because gold in till may occur in different size fractions."

"The focus of this paper is on the analysis of geometrical discontinuity properties for the rock mass located within an open pit mine located in Western Africa. Discontinuity data were collected using various techniques including oriented core logging, borehole televiewer surveys, surface pit wall mapping and photogrammetry. The geological setting was initially studied prior to the data analysis to produce threedimensional ground models of the regional and mine site geology along with block diagrams illustrating predicted fracture patterns. Stereographic and statistical discontinuity data analysis of the geometrical properties of the rock mass was subsequently performed to identify unique structural domains throughout the open pit area. The discontinuity data collected throughout the studied open pit area were primarily discontinuity orientation, frequency and spacing and the investigation focused on the reasons for observed differences between the various data collection techniques. Stereographic analysis was used to assess the preferred geometry of discontinuities filtered by lithology, data collection technique, borehole, discontinuity type and pit wall (footwall or hanging wall). The observed fracture pattern is explained adequately by the geological setting. The need for accurate ground models for the design of open pit slopes is highlighted.INTRODUCTIONThe Tasiast Mine is an open pit operation located in north-western Mauritania, approximately 300 kilometres north of the capital Nouakchott. The Tasiast mine, which is owned and operated by Kinross Gold Corporation (Kinross), began commercial operations in 2008. The Tasiast mine is located in an area characterized by flat desert terrain within the western reaches of the Sahara Desert region. The current mine site includes mill buildings, shop facilities, waste dumps, tailings facilities and two main open pit operations (Piment and West Branch). The West Branch pit is the focus of this paper. The current open pit plan for West Branch indicates a final pit measuring approximately 2.5 km long by 1.4 km wide and 510 m deep."

"The continuing increase in costs for power and fuel are affecting significantly the cost for milling of Canadian ores. In order to ascertain the scope and source of energy consumption in Canadian mills for further energy conservation opportunities, CANMET, in cooperation with the Canadian Mineral Processors carried out a detailed survey on the metallic mineral processing plants. Sixty-seven mills representing almost 300 million tons of annual capacity participated in the survey. The results indicated that in general, copper and iron ore mills, representing the bulk of the tonnage, consumed relatively low levels of energy per ton. Nickel-copper, zinc-copper and lead-zinc ore mills were moderate in energy consumption, while uranium and some copper-lead-zinc mills reported much higher energy consumptions due primarily to the increased heat requirements of the ore pulp. While the plant heating costs varied somewhat with the location in Canada, it was apparent that the lowest heating costs were achieved by those built with proper insulation and energy conservation design. If the cost per million British Thermal Units is taken as $2.00, the mill energy costs generally ranged from 40¢/ton up to $1.20/ton.IntroductionEnergy consumption in milling has always been of significant interest to Canadian mineral processors who traditionally calculate their milling costs down to pennies per ton. Even the measure of an ore's grindability is expressed empirically by Bond in kilowatts hours per ton milled. Some of the mills located in isolated areas were obliged to generate their own electrical energy from fossil or petroleum-based fuel at a cost substantially higher than that obtainable from captive or public hydro-electric installations. These mills practiced energy conservation long before the advent of O.P.E.C. energy cost inflation. One example of this was the use of electric boilers to produce process and heating steam during off-peak electrical load periods."

INTRODUCTION ONE of the greatest and most interesting problems of economic geology is to discover criteria bearing on the persistence of ore in depth. It is a question which is very much to the fore in connection with many of our important mines in British Columbia, and, as is to be expected, it is a most controversial one. The present paper, summarizing the views of the writers concerning the possibilities, in some of the mining districts of the Province, for the persistence of commercial ore to greater depths than have been, or are at present, mined, is offered as a basis for a general discussion on the subject and to call attention to the need for renewed study and research on the problem. Sooner or later-at some depth or other-individual ore-shoots become impoverished and bottom. In many mines where this has happened, either at the same or at a lower horizon, another ore-shoot, which had no surface outcrop, has been encountered and has continued downward until it, in turn, has pinched out. The Kolar (Mysore, India) gold field, for instance, presents interesting examples of this recurrence of ore-shoots at depth (1). For many years these mines have been under the management of Messrs. John Taylor and Sons. On more than one occasion they have persisted in sinking or drifting on barren quartz or along a narrow fracture for many hundreds of feet before values were again encountered. Their earliest experiment in such bold development took place at a depth comparable to that at which most mines in British Columbia are considered to be bottomed. In the past, is has been concluded that the ores in British Columbian mines do not go below approximately 2,000 feet, and to that depth only in a few instances. Consideration of the depth to which ores have been mined in the Province appears to support this view. The figures shown in the accompaning table have been gathered from various sources and are approximate.

"Many water inflows in Saskatchewan potash mines are linked to salt anomalies. Potash ore and three anomalies in the PCS Cory potash mine in the Patience Lake Member of the Prairie Evaporite Formation were studied to understand the processes involved in their formation. Another goal was to find geological indicators of the proximity of anomalies. A geological model that relates the potash to the salt anomalies has been developed.Up to five post-burial facies may be recognized. These range from carbonate-mud collapse breccias to bedded sylvinite, and probably result from post-burial leaching. In this model, the same fluids that caused widespread recrystallization and possibly enrichment of the potash salts, started by dissolving huge cavities in the evaporites. The effects of the leaching were highly variable, indicated by selectively preserved delicate laminae and chevron textures, to deformed and totally dissolved salt beds. In at least two major events, Late Devonian and Cretaceous, collapse structures may have acted as conduits for overlying formation waters to cause pervasive leaching and recrystallization of the Prairie Evaporite Formation.Geological indicators of the proximity of an anomaly may include: a change in insoluble seam color from greenish-gray to mottled brown and greenish-gray, unusual local increases in ore grade, large patches (e.g., >200 cm2) of sylvite-poor potash crosscutting units near the top of the ore wne, and drops in topography > 10 m of the marker seams. Anhydrite was more common in an anomaly than in ore. The local abundance of anhydrite in ore may indicate the proximity of some salt anomalies. Once an anomaly has been encountered, indicators of a major collapse feature may include: stretched clay seams, folded beds, small collapse features (1 m to 20 m), numerous washouts, or split clay seams with injected salt. Any number, or none, of these indicators may be found close to a major collapse feature."

"The Quesabe Mine, owned by Brunston Mines Limited, is a gold deposit in the south central part of Duprat Township, northwestern Quebec, about 10 miles northwest of Noranda.It is one of the few gold mines in Canada developed since World War II. The occurrence of gold in the Quesabe fault structure has been known for many years, but serious exploration did not begin until 1945. By 1949, 15,000 feet of diamond drilling had been completed and a shaft sunk to a depth of 635 feet, with lateral development on the 450 and 600 foot levels. In 1949 and 1950 a new shaft was sunk to 1,050 feet, new levels were established at 800 and 1,000 feet, and ore was mined and shipped to the Noranda smelter. After November 1950 the ore mined was treated in the company's own mill. The grade of ore was marginal under existing economic conditions, and production was suspended in April 1952. The mine produced about 100,000 tons of ore with an average grade of approximately 0.25 ounces of gold per ton.GeologyThe bedrock formations are all Precambrian, and the general geology of the area has been described by W. G. Robinson (1). The rocks in the vicinity of the mine are acidic and basic volcanics of the Keewatin series (andesite, rhyolite, agglomerates, tuffs) invaded by the Flavrian Lake granite stock, and by dykes and irregular masses of intrusive felsite, quartz porphyry, syenite-porphyry, diorite, and lamprophyre.The mine workings are in andesite and felsite, about 2,500 feet west of the western margin of the Flavrian Lake stock.The principal structural feature of the area, from an economic point of view, is the Quesabe fault. This steeply-dipping fault cuts all the rock formations of the area, and has been traced for about 11 miles along a strike of north 65 degrees east from Lake Arnoux in the northeast corner of Dasserat Township to Duprat Lake near the east boundary of Duprat Township."

"Abstract- The Century mine in northwest Queensland,Australia, is a major sediment-hosted zinclead- silver orebody, located within the western Mount Isa Basin. Stratiform, carbonaceous shalehosted mineralization is developed within Proterozoic shale and siltstone sequences of the Lawn Hill Formation. CRA Exploration Pty Ltd (CRAE) discovered the Century deposit in 1990 and open pit mine development commenced in 1998 under the ownership of Pasminco Century Mine Limited (PCML). The deposit contains an identified mineral resource of 105 Mt @ 12.1% Zn + 1.7% Pb + 46 g/t Ag (Broadbent and Waltho, 1998) which is currently being mined at a rate of 5 Mt/y.In December 1998, an exothermic reaction was observed between explosives spilt onto shale drill cuttings from a blasthole. This reaction is referred to as ‘reactive ground’ and has the potential to cause premature detonation of explosives in a charged blasthole with catastrophic consequences. The incident led to a subsequent geological and geochemical assessment of the different rock types at the Century deposit and their potential reactivity with ammonium nitrate-based (AN) explosive products. This assessment was conducted in an attempt to characterize zones safe for blasting with uninhibited AN-based explosive products. A direct result of this study is a set of procedures outlining the use of different AN-based explosives in areas defined as potentially reactive or non-reactive for the different lithologies present. Black shales contained in both the waste and mineralized sequences contain the sulfide mineral pyrite (FeS2), which is thermodynamically unstable with AN contained in commonly used explosives. The potential reactivity of partially weathered pyrite can ultimately result in the decomposition of an AN-based explosive. It was determined that only pyritic black shales showed any potential to react with AN, irrespective of their position in the stratigraphic sequence. Other lithologies present at Century, including Proterozoic sandstone and Cambrian limestone, are classified as non-reactive with AN. This is a geological risk management situation present at the Century mine."

"The Mine property comprises some 700 acres in ranges VI and VII, Barraute township, about thirty-seven miles due north of Val d'Or in northwestern Quebec.The transformation of a small farming community into the youngest and largest zinc producer in eastern Canada began late in the autumn of 1950. At this time, a geological survey party of the Quebec Department of Mines discovered sphalerite-pyrite mineralization in a strong regional shear structure crossing range VII of Barraute township. Diamond drilling commenced in November 1950, and by June 1951 a total of more than 63,000 feet of drilling, at fifty-foot intervals, had explored an ore zone 2,500 feet in length and 102 feet in average width to a depth of 700 feet, the deepest ore intersection.Production started late in 1952, and is at present in excess of 4,000 tons per day. Production in 1954 of77,790, 166 lbs. of zinc and 989,610 oz. of silver, from 1,525,284 tons of ore, makes this mine the largest zinc producer in eastern Canada.General GeologyAll the consolidated rocks of the area are Precambrian, and most of them are volcanic. They consist mainly of subsiliceous Javas, with smaller amounts of siliceous to intermediate lavas and pyroclastic rocks. The lavas have been intruded contemporaneously by many sill-like bodies of coarser-grained diorite and gabbro. There are no sedimentary rocks within ten miles of the mine.A period of major folding and faulting was followed by intrusion of granite. The volcanic rocks have been compressed into isoclinal folds trending roughly east-west, and the granitic batholiths also show a rude lineal alignment in the same direction. The granitic masses vary consider-ably in composition, ranging from the potassic LaCorne granite, ten miles south of the mine, to the sodic Duverny mass, ten miles west. In addition there is a variation from a general granitic core to dioritic and gabbroic phases on the margins and in satellitic intrusions."

"Abstract - Prior to the development of the Diavik Diamonds Project, baseline studies were conducted to determine the geochemical characteristics of four kimberlite orebodies as an aid in the design of both the water-management system and the facilities for containment of processed kimberlite and ore stockpiles. Materials tested included field samples of volcaniclastic and pyroclastic kimberlite, processed kimberlite (i.e., kimberlite ore which had been screened and washed as part of the processing procedure), and sedimentary mudstone (a minor xenolithic unit which was assimilated during kimberlite emplacement). Approximately 200 samples of kimberlite materials were collected as part of the geochemistry program. Test-work included whole-rock chemical analyses, acidbase accounting, kinetic leach tests using columns, and mineralogical analyses. Diavik kimberlite has major oxide and trace-element concentrations consistent with global averages for kimberlite. The mean total-sulfur content of the kimberlite material is 0.22 wt% S, but with a significant range. The kimberlite has an excess of carbonate minerals over sulfide minerals (average CO2 = 4 wt%, present mainly as calcite), and has a mean neutralization potential of 311 kg CaCO3 equivalent/tonne. A reactive form of framboidal pyrite associated specifically with the mudstone xenoliths is the primary source of sulfide-sulfur. Long-term kinetic tests confirmed the preliminary interpretations that were made from the static-test results. Kimberlite and processed kimberlite are net acid-consuming materials that produce alkaline drainages and have low but detectable leaching rates for SO4 and specific trace metals such as Al, Co, Cu, Ni, and Zn. If segregated from the kimberlite, mudstone xenoliths are acid-generating (pH = 3) and produce an effluent with elevated concentrations of SO4, Fe, Al, Cu, Ni, and Zn. The study demonstrates that xenolithic units in Diavik kimberlites have an important effect on the environmental geochemistry of the ore rock. The mineralogy and aqueous geochemistry of the kimberlite materials are such that they may not be suitable for general earthworks or as an alkaline agent and should report to an engineered facility to protect site water quality."

"SINCE their inception, the mineral industries have, from time to time, been confronted by various and sundry problems. These have been identified, attacked and solved by means of a slow methodical process peculiar to these industries. During the past decade, these industries have experienced increasing difficulty in attracting and retaining an adequate supply of manpower. This poses a situation which seems to be unlike those that came before it in that it appears to be immune to those methods of attack which were successful in the past. Despite various attacks upon the problem, its seriousness appears to be increasing at an increasing rate. The point has now been reached where the President of AIME recently expressed the opinion that this is the most serious problem facing these industries at this time (1). Another observer has gone so far as to state, ""Given the motivation and the determination, the crisis in mineral education in Canada, can, in time be met. But it will take a generation if we Start DOW (2)"".Part of the difficulty arises out of the identification and assessment of the problem itself. For, although the manpower shortage has been developing over a fairly long period of time, there still appears to be no unanimity concerning its seriousness and the nature of the threat which it poses. Some observers continue to maintain that the current situation is not new at all, but is merely the reappearance of something old which is cyclic in nature. They observe that in the past there were numerous periods where the mineral industries encountered manpower shortages but that, in each instance, the situation eventually rectified itself. Furthermore, they draw attention to the fact that the current problem is not confined to the mineral industries but that in fact all industries are experiencing an increasing manpower shortage. They are therefore confident that if left alone the present problem will eventually disappear."

"The Great Dyke extends for 540 krn along strike, to unknown depth, and varies in width from 3 krn to 11 krn. Rb/Sr age determinations gives values of approximately 2470 Ma.The Dyke consists of a variety of mafic and ultramafic rocks, many altered to serpentinites. These include, from top to bottom, successions of gabbro/norites, pyroxenites, peridotiteslharzburgites, and dunites/picrites.The layers dip in from either margin, steepest at the edges (20°) and flattening toward the central sections. Four separate complexes are present. From north to south these are termed the Musengezi, Hartley, Selukwe and Wedza Complexes, and are described as 'boat-shaped' or 'pig-troughed'. All are similar in petrological sequences. Physiographically, the Dyke is spectacular in the north, where as a mountain range it meets the Zarnbezi Escarpment. Elsewhere in the central parts there is little surface expression and wide open treeless vleis. Dyke rocks cut through granite and schist belt terrain and are termed 'The Magnesia Belt'.Vast mineral resources exist. These include chrome, asbestos, platinoids, nickel, copper and gold. Up to eleven chrome seams numbered from top to bottom occur in the lower ultramafic sequences. Seams are narrow at 10 em to 30 em but of high grade. The platinum occurs 10 m to 40 m below the norite/pyroxenite contact.A 60 m wide zone of Light Sulfide Mineralization (LSM) of less than 1070 sulfides extends from the lower gabbronorites into the upper pyroxenites. In this LSM, four enriched zones carry up to 5% sulfides. The most widespread is termed the Main Sulfide Zone (MSZ), below which is No. 2, No.3 and No.4 Sulfide Zones. The MSZ carrying pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite is a multielement ore with components of PGE (pt-Pd-Rh), nickel, copper and cobalt, and gold and silver.Extensive exploration programs have been carried out and the intention is to begin large-scale mining. However, with Russia supplying metals to the western markets, South Africa's cutback on production, and an end to the Cold War, delays have arisen."

"Equity Silver Mines Limited owns and operates an open pit silver 111ine located 37 km southeast of Houston in the Omineca District of British Columbia, Figure l. The property is approximately 300 km west of Prince George and 417 km east of the Port of Prince Rupert. This is the largest silver mine in Canada and one of the five largest silver producers in the western world.Equity is a subsidiary of Placer Development Limited, which owns 70 of Equity's issued and outstanding Common Shares. Placer was responsible for financing and developing the property and now provides general management and administrative services.All mining is by open pit methods, using three 1600 P&H shovels, eight 45 t Caterpillar and three 77 t Wabco trucks, three 40R rotary drills, two D8 dozers, one 9888 front-end loader and other ancillary equipment. We are now phasing out the Southern Tail pit and bringing the Main Zone into productior; see Figure 2.Comminution in the concentrator is achieved via primary, secondary, and tertiary crushers followed by rod and ball mills. The flotation circuit, with Southern Tail ore, produces a concentrate containing between 3 000 and 6 500 g of silver per tonne, 201 copper, and 25 g of gold per tonne. Running Main Zone ore, concentrate grades will decrease to about 4 500 g of silver per tonne, 17% copper, and 18 g of gold per tonne. Design milling capacity is 5 300 tpd, which is often exceeded.The flotation concentrate contains relatively high levels of antimony and arsenic. Because of these impurities Equity was unable to obtain economically acceptable long-term sales contracts for flotation concentrate. For this reason a leaching process was developed, and a plant designed, built and placed in operation. Due to the complex and unique technology involved, many start-up problems were encountered but by March 1983 the leach plant was considered ""fully operational."" This paper describes some of our progress and problems in bringing the Equity leach plant through its start-up period."

"The metal producing industries in Canada and in the U.S. in many ways owe their technical beginnings to Welsh technology. The first copper smelter in Canada started in 1849-50 with a Welsh reverberatory furnace and skilled furnacemen brought across from Swansea to operate the equipment1- The Rocky Mountain smelting industry began with the installation of furnaces resembling the Swansea smelters(2). It was only later that the North American industry developed newer and improved methods. This article briefly describes the metallurgical history of the Lower Swansea Valley, being that section of land stretching northward from Swansea along the banks of the River Tawe, and bordered by hillsides east and west of the river. The Valley has had a classic cycle of development and decline common to industrial areas of Britain which grew in the Industrial Revolution. Perhaps more than any other area today, the Swansea Valley represents a complete cycle of use from agricultural to the peak of industrial development through to decline and dereliction. The conditions which made the Tawe Valley attractive to certain industries were laid down nearly 300 million years ago with the Carboniferous swamps and forests which covered the area, later forming the south Wales coalfield. As a result of glacial action and the deposit of glacial outwater and alluvial gravels, the valley adopted the traditional configuration, with its rocky sides occasionally remaining exposed. Up to probably about the 16th century, the Lower Swansea Valley was similar in use and appearance to many other valleys in the region. From the 14th century, the natural oak woodland had provided a continuous source of timber to produce charcoal for iron making as well as for structural purposes. Agriculture was the main activity in the valley in this period, but it was likely that the farmers also mined small amounts of coal by way of ""bell pits"", and adits into the coal seams."

"The Sä Dena Hes Joint Venture Mill was designed to process 450,000 tonnes per year of ore grading 11.3% lead and 13.2% zinc.Run of mine ore is crushed in a jaw crusher and then ground in a closed circuit SAG mill and ball mill. A standard differential float in conventional flotation cells produces quality lead and zinc concentrates. Dewatering of concentrates is achieved using high rate thickeners, lamella clarifiers and pressure filters. Process water is 100% recycle.Plant design was based on metallurgical test work performed on drill core samples. The plant is operating at better than design specifications.INTRODUCTIONSä Dena Hes Joint Venture was formed in 1989 to develop the Sa Dena Hes lead/zinc sulphide mine, located approximately 45 km north of the Town of Watson Lake, Yukon. The mine is owned by a Joint Venture partnership between the operator, Curragh Inc. (87.5%) and Hillsborough Resources Limited (12.5%).The project was completed in a record ten months, working throughout the severe Yukon winter and through an abnormally wet spring and summer. The first truckloads of concentrate were shipped from the mine on August 1, 1991.The mill currently processes 550,000 tonnes of ore per year grading 6.9% lead and 11.5% zinc. Ore is crushed in a jaw crusher and ground to 60% passing 75 microns in a closed circuit operation of one SAG mill and ball mill. Using conventional flotation cells a 150,000 tonnes of concentrate is produced in a year with lead concentrate grading 78% lead and a zinc concentrate grading 60% zinc at overall recoveries of 89% and 90% respectively.Concentrates dewatering is accomplished using high rate thickeners, clarifiers and pressure filters. The lead concentrate and zinc concentrate contain 5.4% water and 7.8% water respectively. Concentrates are trucked to Skagway, Alaska for subsequent shipping to overseas smelters."

The main application of refractories based on andalusite in ferrous metallurgy are in air heaters of blast furnaces, mobile mixers, and hot-metal transfer, pig iron ladle, steel-casting, and intermediate ladles. Three specific properties of andalusite are very interesting for the production of high-quality shaped and unshaped mullite refractories: being free of water, its crystal a remains stable without changing its density or volume after firing and therefore has no internal porosity .Graphite additives due to its great wetting ability play an important role in raising the property of refractory bodies. In order to improve properties of andalusite graphite bodies, oxidant agent for increasing in hot strength and oxidation resistance can not be avoided. In this research, firstly 8 pig iron ladles from ESC(esfahan Steel company) with different conditions selected and monitored during usage to determine of main factors affecting on corrosion of refractories. Results showed that tap to tap time, undischarged pig iron ,penetrated pig iron are the main ones.Literature studies showed that the graphite addition help to thermal shock resistance and liquid penetration(steel,pig iron) effect. In this research particle size distribution of aggregates containing andalusite and graphite determined by andreazen equation. Then different mixes with different percentage of graphite,Si, FeSi, SiC prepared by uniaxially pressing under 1500kgf/cm2 pressure by adding 4%wt novalak resin and 0.4%wt HMTA as hardner. Samples fired at 1100-1500oC under reduction atmosphere. According to specific standards density, porosity and CCS measured. Analytical tests such as XRD, SEM were carried out on sample selected from point of view of mechanical properties at different temperatures. Results showed that optimized amount of Si and Fe-Si for _-SiC formation in body is 4 and 6 %wt respectively at 1500OC. XRD and SEM analysis on sample with Fe-Si additives showed no destructive phase through the matrix, also SiC additives not only increase oxidation resistance but also no effect on thermo-mechanical properties.

Everybody would agree that a good roadway leads to more efficient haulages by reducing haul times, smoother and safer operation for operator and less wear and tear on tires and equipment, thus improving availability and overall costs efficiency. There is a number of factors that come into play to achieve this especially when developing a mine. Excavations of Ramps and Headings: Operators should follow surveyors and layouts accurately while driving ramps. To maintain constant grades on ramps, which leads to better design control of water and easier grading of roadways. Dips and dives lead to needless over excavations and unnecessary cost and disposal of waste rock. When dressing a ramp some areas may require 2 to 3 feet of material to correct the dips and perfect to constant grade. You may ask yourself, is this all necessary? A small exercise is to follow a loaded haulage truck up ramp. At the first hump, grade change, notice the down shift and notice how far the truck travels to regain the up shift and his speed. The difference is remarkably noticeable when the grade is constant. All this leads to less driveline shock, less horsepower demand, better fuel efficiency and more productivity. Drill & Blast Patterns to control water for Ramp Headings: The drill pattern needs to allow for a ditch. A slight cross fall to form a ditch can easily be done with the lifters. The preferred side of the ditch is always the inside curve of the ramp as it has less tendency to erode roadbed material. On a level, the ditch is dictated by the sump location. A blasted ditch will eliminate water pounding and keep the roadbed dry. Water trapped in roadbed is the major cause of rollout and de-stability of roadbed. If the water is allowed to drain in the middle of the ramp it will cause erosion, movement and loss of fines and an increase in grading intervals.

"Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited, Flin Flon, Manitoba, has developed a metallurgical wastewater treatment system employing two-stage lime neutralization, sludge recirculation and conventional mechanical thickening.Laboratory investigations, initiated in 1970, led to the construction of a pilot-scale minewater treatment plant, at Schist Lake Mine, in early 1971. This plant, treating 600 cubic metres /day of wastewater containing 30-60 mg/1 zinc. demonstrated metal extraction efficiencies of 99% under normal operating conditions.On the basis of this pilot work, a second pilot-scale treatment system was established in 1975 at the Flin Flon metallurgical plant to treat zinc refinery process waste water. Through numerous improvements, including automatic con¬trol equipment, the system has evolved to a full-scale operation capable of treating 800 cubic metres/day of wastewater containing 4-11 gm/1 zinc. Treated effluent contains 0.2-20 mg/1 zinc. The hydroxide sludge produced returns to the metallurgical process for the recovery of metals while clarified effluent discharges to waste.With the system, Hudson Bay Mining has achieved its original goal: the reduction of environmental contamination, while realizing a return from metal recovery.IntroductionWith the goal of reducing environmental contamination, Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting began laboratory testwork, during the late 1960's, into the methods and technology for neutralizing and removing heavy metals from acid mine drainage. "Geographic information systems (GIS) provide an efficient means for the recording, manipulation, revision, display and analysis of spatially referenced data. GIS are widely used at the exploration stage of mine development, and are increasingly used for reclamation planning. The ability of a GIS to perform spatial searches and query spatially referenced data make it a powerful tool for use at all stages of mine development. As the amount of data available for analysis increases, so does the power and flexibility of GIS as a planning tool.Starting from the exploration database, this paper describes how a GIS can be used for the development of mining plans based on topography, geology and mineralization information stored in a relational database. Planning decisions approaching the optimal can then be made for a wide range of parameters, including stockpile and waste dump locations, the location of potentially acid generating and neutralizing material for dump design, profitable and risk-controlled mine extraction sequencing, and haul road locations. This is made possible by the overlay and buffer analysis capabilities of a GIS which are explored and exploited to produce a continuous mine production planning program, as well as site remediation and reclamation using a successful case study. The Ore and ProductsThe mines in the Saskatoon area — Agrium, PCS-Cory, PCS-Allan, PCS-Patience Lake, PCS-Lanigan and IMC-Colonsay — extract the ore from the Patience Lake member. The mines in the southeast corner of Saskatchewan — IMC-K1 and K2, PCSRocanville — extract from the Esterhazy member, while IMC-Belle Plaine, near Regina, solution mines potassium chloride from both potash-bearing members.Ore from the Patience Lake member is a medium-grained mixture of sylvite and halite, with a KCl content of 36%, insolubles averaging up to 5.5%, and little or no carnallite.The ore from the Esterhazy member is a coarse-grained mixture of sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl) with a small amount of water insolubles, and some carnallite (a K-Mg chloride). Average run-of-mine grades are about 30% KCl."

The Argyle diamond mine is located in the Kimberley region in the northern part of Western Australia at approximately 16°43'S, 128°23'E in subtropical bush/shrub savannah. The 46 ha (113 acres) pipe is situated in the Halls Creek mobile zone, which was cratonized about 1800 Ma ago and adjoins the Kimberley Block, a plateau upheld by Early to Middle Proterozoic rocks underlain by presumably Archean basement. The crater and upper pipe zones of the diatreme have been preserved within tilted and faulted strata of Middle to Late Proterozoic age. Its age of intrusion is about 1178 Ma. The diatreme rock is not kimberlite but olivine lamproite which was not recognized as a primary diamond host rock until 1978. The Kalumburu Joint Venture, a syndicate of local and overseas mining companies, started in 1972 to prospect the Kimberley Block with a modest annual prospecting budget of $125,000. Annual expenditure doubled each year and reached $1 million in 1975 after which CRA took over management of the newly-formed Ashton Joint Venture with an annual expenditure of $2 million (all figures are in current US dollars). The Argyle diatreme was found near the end of the eighth field season and after a total expenditure of $12 million. Annual production is about 34 million carats which places Australia as the world's number one diamond-producing country, although, because of the low value per carat, it is number four in terms of total annual value. The global cost required for a major diamond mine is between $300 and $400 million, with a discovery every 10 to 12 years. Because Canada contains large areas of prospective platform rocks underlain by Archean basement it is likely that a major diamond deposit does exist there. It is probable that it will be found before the end of this decade and exploration expenditure may be in the order of $100 million.

"Various measurement, monitoring and verification (MMV) techniques are used to ensure the safety of operations in petroleum projects. One of these techniques is microseismic (MS) monitoring of the caprock. A challenge in MS monitoring of caprock is that unlike projects such as tunnelling in hard rocks, the number of recorded events are much smaller and also wide spread through the rock mass which makes interpretation of the physical meaning behind the events very difficult.In this paper, a numerical technique is introduced and validated for coupling a finite difference code, FLAC3D (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua), with a discrete element code, PFC3D (Particle Flow Code). Then, a similar approach is adopted for modeling microseismic events in the caprock. For this purpose, the underburden, reservoir and overburden layers are modeled by FLAC3D. A rather small section of caprock above the reservoir is nulled in the FLAC3D model and substituted by a PFC3D inclusion. The reservoir pressures are then applied to the reservoir section of FLAC3D. Once the FLAC3D cycles, there will be induced pressures in the caprock due to its undrained response to the change in pressures within the reservoir. These induced pressures are transferred to PFC3D as boundary velocities. Then the PFC3D cycles and sends back the boundary forces to FLAC3D. This back and forth process continues until equilibrium is reached. During this process, there will be bond breakages within the PFC3D inclusion that can be regarded as MS events. An algorithm for recording the microseismic energies based on a change in local strains is also implemented. The results are then compared with real data. The effect of injection fluid temperature is also studied. No significant appearance of microseismic events was observed due to injection of CO2 in both cases (i.e. with or without considering temperature). However, this continuum/discontinuum approach seems promising for understanding the microseismic response of caprock in more detail and also using the MS data for validation of geomechanical models."
