"At the Falconbridge Limited, Canadian Nickel Division, Sudbury Operations, we investigated the ""NO NOISE"" ear muffs model NN3-F which is a Swedish product with foam-filled sealing rings (the Hellberg Standard Volume Hearing Protector). It is used extensively at Falconbridge mines in Sudbury.The research which was carried out in the four Falconbridge mines was conducted under three different headings: manufacturer's attenuation data (psychophysical method), clamping force and head size (bizygomatic diameter), and attenuation tests (physical methods) under working conditions.Manufacturers of hearing protectors claim their products offer noise reductions of 23 decibels (NRR) or more, but they fail to point out that this reduction is obtainable only under ideal conditions. The reality of attenuation under working conditions, as several studies have found, is quite different.Methods for using short measurements to determine the noise exposure index, and for controlling muff-wearing habits, were developed at the Elliot Lake Laboratory. Measurements taken at Falconbridge on ""NO NOISE"" ear muffs revealed that they have a practical attenuation of some IO to 13 decibels. It is important to note here that measurements also revealed that clamping force (thus attenuation) was in an inverse relationship with ear muff comfort. Measuring attenuation using noise dosimeters was a difficult job. Not a single surveyor would accept these measurements (physical method) for absolute accuracy. Apart from that, it was impossible to measure, in one shift, more than two work stations. Because of this, we sought a solution: measuring head size and clamping force in relation to actual attenuations.A detailed analysis of the relationship between attenuation and head size/clamping force was done at four mines. Standard deviation ellipses (standard error ellipses) for head size versus clamping force are in close agreement with measurements that were carried out. In order to measure clamping force an apparatus was constructed and a method for measuring suspension system durability is described in Appendices Band C of this report. At the same time we sought to reduce deterioration of ear muffs in mines as well as to put in place a system whereby attenuation can be controlled and improved. The clamping force apparatus can be operated automatically. The proposed control system is quick, simple and efficient . This system is equally applicable in small and large mining operations, and it can be totally automated and the data computerized for audit of the results. This control system is a new step in controlling ear muff attenuation in working environments.From these measurements of NN3-F ""NO NOISE"" muffs it can be concluded that ear muffs are not the total solution to protect the worker from noise.As the results were evaluated folio wing measurement, Falconbridge switched from the NN3-F ""NO NOISE"" muffs to approximately 90% Mark V ""NO NOISE"" muffs and 10% Mark V MSA muffs. These new muffs showed much better head size versus clamping force relationship and can be expected to produce 14 dBA or better attenuation of noise. Current trend of the global flow of strategic metals are analyzed to discuss the strategy of the development of recycling technology and alternative technology. In many cases, each global flow of metal is changing from the trilateral structure of U.S., EU and Japan in the later 20th century into the convergence to China as the factory of the world. Scrap flows are also changing dynamically. A long term change of prices of metal has gotten changed since the entrance of this century. The estimation of metal consumption up to 2050, in which the author estimated that many kinds of metal will overshoot the reserve base line, is revised considering these change of current trends.

The recovery of the economy of the Democratic Republic of Congo has allowed for the rapid increase in production of copper from this region, while the increased price of cobalt continues to support the recovery of that country’s economy. This has enabled the modernization of the process technology used, particularly the change from direct electrowinning of copper to solvent extraction-electrowinning. With this change has come a variety of technical challenges in optimizing the recovery of cobalt from these sources. In this paper, we discuss aspects of the flowsheets for the production of cobalt from the ores of the DRC and Zambia, highlighting the technological improvements that have been made. Following this description of the practice, we assess the challenges of further improving the recovery and purity of cobalt from these sources. INTRODUCTION The African Copperbelt (Figure 1) is by far the biggest producer and holds the greatest reserves of cobalt (Sheed, 2015). However, the ores of this great mining region are extracted primarily for their copper content, and cobalt is a by-product. The ratio of copper-to-cobalt is between 6 and 20 to 1, with the ores from the DRC richer in cobalt than those from Zambia. The overall supply of cobalt, shown in Figure 2, is increasing due to an increase in demand for its use as a battery material. Cobalt is used in superalloys, hard metals, pigments, catalysts magnets, tyre adhesives, lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, and wear-resistant coatings, amongst others. Although these generic categories persist, Figure 3 shows how the relative usage of cobalt is changing due to the uptake of electric vehicles in China and Europe. Cobalt is a key element in lithium-ion batteries, and because it is widely anticipated that electric vehicles will be legislatively encouraged, it is anticipated that the demand for cobalt will rise. This anticipated increase in demand resulted in an increase in the price for cobalt, to which suppliers responded over-eagerly, and the price has dropped dramatically in the first few months of 2019, as shown in Figure 4. However, there is a clear cycle of price peaks in cobalt’s history.

"The 3000 t/d mill at Hernia Gold Mines Inc. was commissioned in March, 1985. By Canadian standards the concentrator is highly automated, however, unlike the retrofit systems in many other plants, the Hernia process control system was installed during plant construction. This paper describes the Hernia control system beginning with system development (justification, architecture, start up, etc.), proceeding to current applications (crushing, grinding, leaching, etc.) and finally discusses some of the short term objectives for system improvement.INTRODUCTIONThe Hernia Gold Mines Inc. operation is located in the Marathon area of Northwestern Ontario. Controlled by Noranda Minerals Inc. (50.1 %), the cost of bringing the mine into production was nearly $300 million. A unique feature of the mine development was the extraordinarily short elapsed time of three years from Noranda's initial involvement to the start of milling operations. Additional background information on this project can be found in the trade literature (e.g. Tinter (1986). Scales (1987).)The Hernia concentrator is designed to process 3000 tpd of ore and commenced operation in March, 1985. Figure 1 provides a general plant flowsheet indicating the major circuits. Typical annual production statistics are included on the figure and these have been extrapolated from the available 1987 year-to-date data. Larsen and Tessier (1986) have previously described the operational aspects of the mill.In a metaphorical sense, the Hernia concentrator is like the traditional bride, ""wearing something old (e.g. the cyanide leach process), something new (e.g. a plant wide digital control system installed during construction), something borrowed (e.g. crushers from Gaspe) and something blue (e.g. the cladding on the surface buildings). While the prospect of fully undressing this bride is of considerable interest, here we choose to focus on something new. In particular, we choose to examine the process control system in some detail since Hernia is one of Canada's more highly autcmated gold mills. The control system is of interest because it has received suostantial credit for maximizing metal production and minimizing operating costs. With reference to the latter, it is worthy of note that Hem lo reports recent operating costs of less than $100 U.S./oz."

Anglovaal Minerals acquired the Nkana slag dump from Zambia Consolidated Copper mines (ZCCM) in 1998 and embarked on an ambitious project to pioneer the recovery of cobalt from slag using DC smelting technology. Anglovaal Research Laboratories performed initial pioneering smelting tests in a 250 kW DC furnace over a 3-year period before engaging Mintek for three piloting campaigns at the 1.5 MW level. Mintek had previously developed a reductive smelting process, patented in 1995, using a DC arc furnace for the recovery of cobalt from slags. The results of the pilot-plant test campaigns were used as the basis for engineering the commercial 40 MW operation installed at Chambishi Metals plc in Zambia in 2001. This paper traces the development of understanding of the metallurgical fundamentals ultimately used to predict furnace performance, reviews some of the extreme technical challenges faced, how solutions were identified and highlights some of the critical issues identified during piloting and how these impacted both positively and negatively on the final commercial operation.

The aim of the project was the development of an electroforming process for the production of medical implants out of gold. To prove the applicability of this technology, tympanostomy tubes were chosen as demonstrators. These barbell-shaped tubes are usually produced mechanically; of silicone or, for higher therapeutic demands, of metal ? gilded silver or gilded stainless steel. Gold electroforming of the tubes as an alternative manufacturing process would reduce the expenditures for the mechanical preparation and lower the corrosion susceptibility significantly. To obtain electroformed gold tubes of the desired shape, the following steps are necessary: fabrication of a negative template by drilling holes with countersinks in an insulated aluminium sheet, electroforming process, removal of the aluminium by using a sodiumhydroxide solution. For the optimisation of the shape and surface quality of the tubes respectively the simplification of the manufacturing process, various parameters were tested, e.g. aluminium quality and sheet thickness, type of insulation layer, substrate processing, hydrodynamic conditions, type of electroforming electrolyte, electrodes position, etc. The manufactured tubes were characterised in view of thickness distribution, hardness, surface roughness and purity in comparison to mechanically produced reference tubes. From the results obtained during the project it can be concluded that electroforming processes can be easily adopted for the manufacture of medical implants. The time-consuming electroforming process is by far compensated by the simultaneous production of an arbitrary number of implants.

"LET ME FIRST OF ALL thank you for sending this invitation to me to participate in this Annual Meeting of The Mining Society of Nova Scotia. As an engineer, although I don't get an opportunity to practice very much engineering these days, I am, of course, always pleased to be able to meet with my fellow engineers to exchange views, but I must admit that today I feel a little bit out of place in the midst of all the experts that are here today. Let me make one thing clear - I'm a generalist! Your program states that I am to make a keynote address. I have always thought that a keynote speech is one that says something that has not been said before - announces some new program or policy, or says something startling. I am sure you will understand when I tell you that keynote addresses are made by politicians and that civil servants speaking publicly are usually expected to give an account of what is, or what is likely, to happen as a result of policies that have been announced in keynote speeches by politicians. I am reminded of a statement by a distinguished parliamentarian who said, ""However exalted a civil servant may be, he is not above the elected officials."" So today I will confine myself to giving you an overview with particular emphasis on the development side of oil and gas. The theme of ""Oil and Gas"" is a topical one these days. I suppose it's because of all the copy that is being generated by the media on the U.S. energy crisis, the Mid-East situation, the fact that most of the world's proven oil reserves are in Arab hands and, of course, the accelerated exploration activity that is taking place in the North Sea, in the Arctic, and off the coast of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia."

Al - 5.5 wt% Mg - 0.3 wt% Cu alloy strip was successfully fabricated by horizontal-type twinroll casting (TRC). For producing sound strips with no surface defect, the casting was conducted at various roll rotation speed, and the sound strip could be obtained at relatively low casting speed (3 rpm). The cast strip was homogenized at 450 °C for 10 hours, and then cold rolled with a reduction rate of 78%, followed by a final annealing at 450 °C for 1 hour. The annealed sheets showed good mechanical properties with approximately 330 MPa in tensile strength and 27 % in elongation, but exhibited strong anisotropy depending on the tensile directions. For the homogenized sheets, warm rolling was also conducted at 200, 300, and 400 °C. The tensile test results of the warm-rolled sheets showed that the rolling at medium temperature (300 °C) was proper to fabricate the sheets with relatively good mechanical properties and low anisotropy.

The development and maintenance of underground roadways are increasingly important aspects of the modern mining process. With the trend toward automation and track-less mining, roadbeds capable of with standing increased wheel loading have proven necessary to maintain high vehicle speed and reduced maintenance costs. Concrete has been used successfully on some roadways in order to obtain the required characteristics. However, this solution usually involves unacceptable expense. The objective of the Road Router project was to create a drift floor profiling machine capable of cutting a smooth surface out of the existing rock floor of development drifts and ramps. This surface would provide a durable, high strength, low rolling resistance roadbed that would allow for reduced operating cycle times and lower maintenance costs of scoops and haulage trucks. The Road Router has the potential to offer an alternative to concrete with substantial cost savings.

Scarcity of truck tyres, increasing cost and decreasing availability of labour, increases in fuel costs and project budget blowouts have changed the paradigm behind mining equipment selections. The cycle of commodity changes have occurred in parallel with the increasing maturity of continuous mining machinery, mobile in-pit crushing systems and very large scale conveyor belt systems. This paper will consider the merits of operating continuous materials handling systems, mobile in pit crushing systems, relocatable crushing systems, relocatable conveyor systems and automated waste handling systems in place of the more conventional approach of truck haulage.

As a part of a large research and development program in Finland, a system calibration for an UAV measurement method having practical experiments in a Jorvas Railway Yard design and construction project. The Railway yard construction are was measured using an UAV measurement device by Smartplanes (Smartone) and using some reference points measured by a GNSS device. The measured data was cleaned, combined and adjusted through Least Squares Optimization using the software developed by a Finnish company Pieneering Oy. As references, two different laser scans as well as total station surveys were used. For applicability evaluation, the accuracy of measurement, the reliability of measurement, and the economy of measurement were used. Based on the comparisons, the achieved precision of the UAV measurement was high, instead the accuracy of measurement was not sufficient in this case. The principle of this photogrammetric measurement includes a lot of redundant observations making it possible to achieve a high level of reliability. The economy in this Railway Yard Design project was not able to achieve.

IN view of the truly remarkable development of special steels for special purposes, the mining industry has for years looked forward to a time when steel makers would come forward with a product which would be an improvement over the straight carbon steel which has always held the field for drilling rock. In order to avoid making changes in conventional shop practice, the industry has perhaps been too insistent upon obtaining a water hardening steel which could be handled in the blacksmith shop by long established methods. As early as 1932 or 1933, an oil-hardening tool-steel of the one per cent carbon, plus chrome, plus molybdenum type was applied to hollow drill steel. It was known as a hard as well as a tough steel, and one that, theoretically, should give a good account of itself as a rock drill, if properly heat-treated; and so it has proved in actual trials. There were numerous deterrents which retarded adoption of this steel. For several years there has been a constant improvement in the drilling qualities of the straight carbon steel, and, considering the higher unit price ? of the alloy, there has been considerable doubt in the minds of some mining? men as to what advantage there might be in the use of alloy over straight carbon for hollow drill steel. The alloy being an oil-hardening steel, its adoption meant having two kinds of steel in the mine, for a time, and that spelled trouble, unless some positive means of identification was adopted. The hardening and forging ranges of alloy steel being narrow also made necessary much closer control over these operations if poor results were to be avoided. These thoughts undoubtedly prevented its use becoming wide-spread, for, as a matter of actual record, less than fifteen per cent of all the hollow drill steel used in Canada today is alloy.

"The present study investigated the low-temperature creep mechanisms in ultrafine-grained (UFG) aluminum manufactured by accumulative roll bonding. UFG aluminum with grain size 0.39 µm showed steady state creep even at room temperature under low stresses as confirmed by the creep curves in the strain rate–strain plot. The low-temperature behavior was divided into four regions by three distinctive stresses, sI, sII and sIII: sI (=45 MPa) is denoted as the micro-yielding stress with which dislocations start movement, sII (=85 MPa) the dislocation-multiplication stress above which dislocations multiply with creep deformation, and sIII (=171 MPa) the conventional yield stress above which macroscopic plastic strain is generated. During low-temperature creep, below sI, negligible plastic strain is generated. Between sI and sII, creep deformation with stress exponent 2.5 occurred, which is accommodated by dislocation absorption into grain boundary and grain boundary sliding, similarly to the low-temperature creep of HCP metals. Between sII and sIII, creep deformation with stress exponent 7.0 occurred, whose mechanism is similar to the low-temperature creep of coarse-grained aluminum. Above sIII, power-law breakdown occurred.INTRODUCTIONIt is well understood that the creep deformation brings about at high homologous temperatures (T/Tm) of >0.4, where Tmis the melting point, with diffusion processes. Recently, the importance of aluminum is increasing for cryogenic temperature parts such as a metallic liner or a cap in high pressure-hydrogen vessels, and the presence of creep behavior in aluminum at room temperature has become recognized (Matsunaga, 2013;Kassner, 2015).In HCP metals and alloys, especially intitanium, steady-state creep behavior appears at room temperature with apparent activation energy of1/10 of that for self-diffusion(Neeraj, 2000; Matsunaga, 2009).On the other hand, Kassner (2015) claims that aluminum shows creep behavior at room temperature with apparent activation energy of 4/5of that forself-diffusion, but never reaches the steady state. We should note that it is derived from the data obtained from short-term creep tests of few hour, and Matsunaga (2013) already claimed the presence of steady state in room temperature creep in aluminum with activation energy of 1/5of that for self-diffusion.The mechanisms for low temperature creep are considered different between HCP and FCC metals: in HCP metals, grain boundary sliding is observed and is thought to accommodate piled-up dislocations at grain boundaries through absorbing them. The so-called slip-induced grain boundary sliding occurs with low number of activated slip systems(Matsunaga,2009).On the other hand, in FCC metals, many activated slip systems bring about work hardening with dislocation cell structure formation. In the initial stage of creep, it results in primary creep (Kassner, 2015), but Matsunaga (2013) claimed that once the annihilating of a cross-slipped dislocation to another reaches balance, steady state is established. It has been, however, strongly required to show more convincing experimental verification for the presence of steady state in FCC metals at low temperature."

"IntroductionMinerals may be classed broadly as ferromagnetic (magnetite for example), as paramagnetic (attracts to regions of magnetic field convergence) and as diamagnetic (attracts to regions of magnetic field divergence). High-intensity separators are not necessary to separate ferromagnetic minerals from other classes. Rather, low-intensity units that generate fields below 5000 gauss are adequate for this purpose. However, paramagnetic minerals, such as ilmenite, with high magnetic ""attractability"" require fields of up to 10 000 gauss; those with low attractability may require even higher fields. Table 1 shows approximate ranges of field intensities necessary to separate ferromagnetic and paramagnetic minerals from minerals of lower attractability, along with the force with which they are attracted relative to iron in a standardized magnetic field.Uniform magnetic fields, not useful for separators, are generated between flat parallel surfaces; non-uniform fields, useful for separators, arise when at least one of the surfaces is of irregular shape. The diagrams below show how magnetic lines of force align relative to north and south poles.If a particle is placed in a uniform field, it feels no displacing force unless the particle distorts the applied field assymmetrically. This is not the case in non-uniform fields which are required for magnetic separators.Magnetic fields can be generated by permanent magnets (low intensity), by electromagnets (medium and high intensity) and even by superconducting coils (100 000 gauss fields and higher), although the latter are not as yet useful in production environments .The magnetic force of attraction per unit of mass, that acts on a paramagnetic mineral such as hematite, increases in proportion to the strength of the field . Unfortunately, the highest fields attainable with electromagnets is of the order of 20 000 gauss. Fortunately, the gradient of the fie ld (that is, the degree of convergence of magnetic lines of force) is important, because the attractive force per unit mass is proportional to it also . Anyox, where the Hidden Creek mine of the Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company is located, is situated on an excellent deep-water harbour in Granby bay, at the head of Observatory inlet, about 600 miles from Vancouver and 90 miles north of Prince Rupert. Anyox is the Indian name for the little stream which empties into Granby bay, and means 'hidden creek'. The Ore-Bodies The ore is a replacement deposit and occurs at and near the contact between argillites and a later intrusive greenstone. This contact locally has a general north-and-south trend, an irregular westerly dip, and in the vicinity of the ore-bodies there has been intense folding, accompanied by faulting. The mineralizing solutions supposedly were derived from the Coast Range granite batholith, distant one to two miles to the east and north. The whole area is cut by many dykes of varying widths, which seem to have had but little part in the ore deposition.

INTRODUCTION This symposium at Cu 2019 has been organised to honour and celebrate the career and achievements of Dr Phillip John Mackey, an internationally recognised expert in the production of non-ferrous metals, especially copper and nickel smelting and refining. Phillip was born in Epping, a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on 19 April 1941 and is one of 4 children of Gilbert and Philomena (nee Bartlett) Mackey. After completing Primary School in Epping, he attended Marist Brothers High School in Eastwood, Sydney and graduated in 1957 as the Dux of the School. Phillip’s father, being on the staff of the Sydney Technical College, in Ultimo, Sydney had the opportunity in the early 1950s to meet the late Professor Sir Rupert Myers, Foundation Professor of the School of Metallurgy at the New South Wales University of Technology (later called the University of New South Wales or UNSW). Gilbert Mackey was impressed by the new young Professor of Metallurgy and encouraged his son to study metallurgy - at the time an expanding industry in post-war Australia. EDUCATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES Phillip commenced at UNSW in 1958, graduating with honours in 1963. His undergraduate education and training included a few years of part-time study while working at British Motor Corporation on sheet metal forming of car bodies. At University Phillip developed his talent for teamwork. He was a contributing writer to the University newspaper, Secretary of the UNSW Students’ Union and was active in the UNSW Metallurgical Society and co-editor in 1963 of “Metallurgical Review,” the annual journal of the UNSW Metallurgical Society. His diverse interests and curiosity about the world around him were likely nourished while at University. Upon completing his Bachelor’s degree, Phillip was awarded a Commonwealth of Australia Postgraduate Research Scholarship. He began his PhD in 1964 on the thesis topic “Studies in Heat Transfer between Dispersed Liquid Metals and Gaseous Atmospheres” working under the supervision of then Associate Professor Noel Warner, an outstanding Professor at the University. Professor Warner is now an Emeritus Professor at the University of Birmingham and is internationally respected for his pioneering theoretical and practical work on established and innovative smelting processes.

"Modem aluminum smelters are facing significant operating cost pressure. Key methods used by smelters to manage this pressure are automation and production-information systems to optimize processes, manage quality, anticipate problems and reduce operating costs. In 2002, Aluminerie Alouette Inc. began its Phase II Expansion project, and retained the joint venture of SNC-Lavalin and Hatch (SLH) as its engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) team. Alouette had the distinction of being one of the most efficient aluminum smelters in the world. Alouette already understood the importance of systems integration in project delivery. For Phase II, key objectives were identified to ensure ""a state of the art"" integrated architecture that would support Alouette's production goals to integrate the existing facilities with the expansion, to form a single efficient facility and meet project schedule and budget targets. Achieving those objectives within the context of a large project often creates major challenges due to the nature of the traditional EPCM delivery model, which relies on several vendors and third-party-systems integrators. In this case, an integrated Alouette-SLH team was made responsible for all aspects of the systems integration, taking over the task from most suppliers. The integrated team was responsible for delivering an automation system and plant-wide-production IT system for the new facilities while accommodating migration for the existing systems. Through the use of rigorous methodology and advanced state of the art technology, the IT and automation strategy led to significant value creation and is recognized today as one of the key factors of the project's success. The primary results were: fast and efficient start-up of facilities, due to quality programming and implementation; a plant able to operate as a single entity; automation and IT systems delivered before time and under budget; standard programming methods implemented throughout the plant; and reduced and simplified maintenance."
