In this paper, the rectangular strands of Incoloy 800 superalloy were fabricated with a pilot vertical continuous caster in Northeastern University, China. In the processing, an electromagnetic stirring (EMS) is applied on the secondary cooling zone to control the solidifying structure and segregation of elements in the strands. The solidification structure of Incoloy 800 superalloy strands were investigated at different electric parameters and casting parameters. The research results show that the EMS can effectively restrain the dendrite growth and increase the ratio of equiaxed grains in Incoloy 800 superalloy strands as applied a suitable electric parameters and cooling condition in the process of continuous casting. The evolution of dendrite crystallization in Incoloy 800 alloy strands from the surface to its center during the solidifying process was investigated with and without EMS.

"This paper deals with the quantitative analysis of mine maintenance records. Based on a case study of dozer engine records, the author suggests an easy method of deriving useful information for managerial decisions in a step-by-step manner.More specifically, the paper deals with the following topics:• determination of the most economical replacement time,• determination of reliability characteristics,• determination of the number of replacements, and• determination of the number of spares.IntroductionThe mining industry collects a lot of information about every aspect of its activities, an example of which appears in Table I. In Table I , the distribution describes the operating hours at failure of 56 different dozer engines used in severe applications. Besides calculating an average and possibly a standard derivation from the data, little else is derived, at least from a statistical point-of-view.More information can be obtained from these records that could help management in the decision-making process.To illustrate this point, the sample data appearing in Table I will be analyzed in detail by making use of well-known concepts in reliability engineering.Distribution of DataTable I represents a distribution obtained from the recorded hours cumulated from the operators' time cards. The operating hours have been divided into fourteen classes for each 1000 hours of engine running, e.g . all engines scoring an operating time of between 1001 and 2000 hours formed a class , those scoring between 2001 and 3000 hours another one, etc. Generally, the class interval should be a multiple of the equipment preventive maintenance check period.The minimum acceptable sample size should be large enough to ensure that the score in each class interval is at least one. Ideally, the score for each class interval should be at least five so that a chi-square test could be carried out if necessary.The average life of an engine can be found by adding the products of the frequency and the class mark (mid-point) values. "The Underground Test Facility (UTF) project operated by the Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority (AOSTRA) north of Fort McMurray has achieved marked success in field testing mining access and horizontal well in situ recovery of bitumen from the Athabasca oil sands.Mine access has provided for effective placing and operation of horizontal wells in the oil sands from a tunnel system in the underlying limestone. Performance of the in situ recovery process, Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage, has substantially exceeded forecasts made at the start of the project. Over-all results of the program to date show great promise for horizontal well in situ technology as a competitive source of bitumen from Alberta's vast oil sands deposits. The potential economics of a commercial expansion at the site are reviewed in this paper.IntroductionIn situ recovery o f bitumen from the Athabasca oil sands has puzzled the oil industry for many year s, but a breakthrough appears close at hand. As well, the budget papers bear witness to the respective governments' political stripes. British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec are seeking higher tax revenues. Only Quebec continues to acknowledge the importance of the mining industry in its annual budget documents."

"Girth welding operations represent the rate-limiting step in pipeline construction. A joint industry-university program was set up to establish the field welding characteristics of large-diameter, high-strength line pipe.Theoretical work carried out at the University of Waterloo showed that pipe wall thickness and joint misalignment prior to welding has a marked influence on the lifting stresses acting on the root pass of girth welds. Pipe diameter and pipe ovality had negligible effects. Super-position of lifting and residual stress (caused by the fusion welding operation) highlighted regions of the weld bead most susceptible to hydrogen-induced cracking.The field welding characteristics of 1219-mm-diameter, 13.72-mm-wt Grade 483 line pipe were evaluated using a specially designed test rig. The principal test variables were lift height, delay time after root pass deposition, preheat temperature, pipe composition and joint misalignment prior to welding. For any given life, preheat and joint misalignment prior to welding had the most significant effect on cracking tendency.The output of this program has industrial significance and illustrates the beneficial features of university-industry collaboration.IntroductionField welding operations comprise the rate-limiting step during pipeline construction. Crack-free girth welds must be made in a wide range of weather conditions and consequently the field weldability of line pipe compositions directly affects pipeline integrity and construction economics.Pipe-laying practice comprises root bead deposition followed by a skidding operation involving lifting (or lowering) the pipe length onto skid s so that the next pipe length can be aligned prior to welding. Consider pipeline construction using 24.4-m lengths of 1219-mm-diameter , 13.72-mm-wt Grade 483 pipe weighing approximately 10,000 kg. Skidding involves loading a 3-mm-thick root bead by moving the free end of the pipe through vertical distances of up to 700 mm . The likelihood of cracking in these circumstances depends on the inherent crack susceptibility of the pipe composition employed, on the hydrogen content of the deposited weld metal and on how well the joint handles the external stressing caused byskidding."

"An Automatic Haulage Truck (AHT) has been developed for manless tramming of run-of-mine material in an operating mine. The AHT has a 70-ton capacity and uses an electric trolley system in combination with a computer control system to operate the vehicle. The purpose of the AHT was to provide a high capacity, high productivity material transfer system where conveyor belt applications are not immediately practical.The AHT project was started in 1983 at Inco Limited, Ontario Division as a result of the need for rapid material transport to match increased extraction rates resulting from bulk mining methods. The original concept was to use a continuous loader with the truck. However, in order to minimize development problems the truck project was considered a stand-alone project.The AHT project consisted of concept development, preliminaryand detailed design, manufacture, surf ace testing and mine implementation.The AHT was manufactured and ready for testing in 1988. At this point the truck was first moved onto the test track for debugging. This proved successful and in 1989the decision was made to install the AHT at Little Stobie mine on 2000 level. Commissioning of the system was started in 1990and at present a fully functional automated haulage system is in place at Little Stobie mine producing 3000 tons/day.This paper describes the project presenting results achieved to date."

"Emphasis in recent years in western Canada has been placed on the development of large open-pit coal mines, the most notable developments being in northeast British Columbia. However, vast resources exist below the limit of economic open-pit mining, and with world demand predictions of the late seventies in mind, the potential of underground coal mining in western Canada has been investigated. Particular emphasis has been placed on the Plains coalfield of Alberta, and there is optimism that underground coal mines will be developed in the Lethbridge area of southern Alberta.With no existing operations in southern Alberta with which to compare mining conditions, any mine planning and feasibility level studies rely heavily on the engineering/geotechnical data obtained from surface investigation to predict ground control problems and technical constraints on mining. Such investigations have been integrated with exploration drilling programs. Emphasis has been placed on extracting maximum information to provide an over-all appreciation of potential ground conditions and to identify specific ground control problems that could be encountered.The acquired geotechnical parameters are then used to evaluate the mine properties from an engineering standpoint for input into the determination of optimum mine layouts, development directions, mining methods and roadway and face support requirements. These geotechnical studies have been primarily directed toward the longwall mining method, but the acquired data base could equally be applied to alternative mining methods.In addition to the lithologic and structural controls which relate to roof stability, caving characteristics, floor heave and subsidence, investigations have been directed at gaining an understanding of the over-all surface and ground water regime with respect to potential inflow into the mine openings and ground control problems that could be caused by inflows encountered during mining. Experience has shown that soft floor conditions and water control are important factors to be considered in a longwall layout, and without doubt these parameters will play a major role in the design and operation of a successful longwall operation in the Lethbridge coalfield."

"The real cost of conversion from ore to semi-fabricated non-ferrous metals has been increasing for many years. Consumer resistance and improved knowledge and techniques now available justify investment in revolutionary as well as evolutionary methods of extraction. Metallurgical factors in current practice which preordain high production costs are identified as: smelters' demand for clean minerals, use of processes with low intensity of working per unit of reactor volume, use of low-velocity reactions, use of long reactor retention times relative to the speed of reactions, dilution of values in solution and commitment to electric power as a source of energy.Six new types of flowsheet are proposed for processing from ore to metal, composed of steps which are economic to construct and maintain and making maximum direct use of fossil fuel and the energy content of minerals. The basic knowledge and technology for developing these flowsheets exists. It is very tentatively suggested that these routes might reduce the capital and production cost for conversion of ore to metal by 30-50%."

"This paper reviews tailings management at Highland Valley Copper, and outlines main features of its tailings storage facility enclosed between the H-H and L-L dams. Key management focusses are: energy efficiency, cost effectiveness, safety and integrity of the tailings impoundment, environmental protection, and reclamation after decommissioning. Main features of the tailings facility include: high international standards for seismic and flood design criteria, water management and water quality monitoring, operations and construction optimization, reclamation and decommissioning plan, and geotechnical challenges associated with the complex geology of the L-L tailings dam foundation.IntroductionHighland Valley Copper stores its tailings mainly in the Highland Valley tailings facility (ultimate capacity: 1.8 billion tonnes). Smaller tailings storage facilities were operated by predecessor companies: the Number One Pond, the Trojan Pond at Bethlehem and the Highmont Pond at the Highmont operation as well as backfilling the Heustis and Jersey lona Pits at Bethlehem. These areas are currently not in use, and are in the reclamation phase prior to decommissioning. This paper focusses on tailings management in the main facility. As indicated in Figure I, the facility includes three tailings dams: these are, going from east to west, the H-H, J-J and L-L Dam, named after the alignment alternatives in the initial feasibility studies. From 1970 to 1977 Canadian Bechtel Ltd. advised Highland Valley Copper's predecessor company Lornex, on tailings storage at the H-H and J-J Dams and on the L-L Dam. Since the completion of the L-L Starter Dam in 1977, Klohn Leonoff Ltd. has provided ongoing consultation and construction monitoring of the raising of the L-L and the H-H Dams. The J-J Dams is currently buried by deposited tailings. This paper reviews key tailings management focusses and main features of the tailings facility."

"Those who submit competing proposals for projects seek to present senior management with complete and fully supported material that will not fail under questioning. Hopefully, misleading notions and omissions will have been minimized and there will have been testing of the assumptions regarding the economic, social and political environments.A capital project evaluation team can do management and itself a service by including a sound approach to the impact of inflation (and its twin problem, interest) on a project and a great disservice with an inappropriate approach to inflation.InflationHandled deftly, inflation can alter a project evaluation to show almost any result the handler desires. It must be a constant source of frustration for design people and cost estimators to spend weeks perfecting the technical aspects of a project in order to minimize costs, only to have all of their efforts set awash in a sea of financial and economic assumptions that submerge all of the detail. In all of this, inflation is perhaps the largest offender, with inflation criteria often being brought to bear at the last minute, almost as an afterthought. Perhaps this tardiness reflects the difficulty of the subject and the belief that senior management will take its own approach to the problems of inflation. Such a belief is unfair to senior management, for it is entitled to not being misled by omission. It is entitled to the full use of the skills of the evaluating team, including reasonable assumptions of the impact of inflation.Working in a consulting context, one has the opportunity to participate in the evaluation of a large number of projects."

PUBLIC attention was first attracted to the Crow River area of north-western Ontario by the discovery of gold in 1928. The first three discoveries were eventually developed into Central Patricia, Pickle Crow, and Albany River mines. In 1929, preliminary developments were carried out at the Howell vein on N.A.M.E. (later Pickle Crow) claims, and in 1929 and 1930 surface and underground work indicated an ore-body at Central Patricia mine. However, due to the financial depression and the distance of these properties from the railway, it was not until 1934 and 1935 that, benefitted by the revaluation of gold, the real potentialities of these two properties began to be realized. Their immediate success led to a resumption of activity on neighbouring properties throughout the area in 1936 and 1937. Preliminary prospecting in the earlier period had been limited by the scarcity of rock exposures in the country. The procedure in the recent programme of intensive exploration has been along similar lines at most properties and has consisted lf detailed geological mapping accompanied by geophysical surveys and followed by systematic drilling of favourable zones. The present importance of the camp may be judged by the fact that, in 1937, Central Patricia and Pickle Crow mines together produced bullion valued at $3,662,953, and paid $1,450,000 in dividends. In addition, there were pro-mising gold developments at Albany River mine. During the past two seasons, the Geological Branch of the Ontario Department of Mines has been making a fairly detailed study of the geology and mineral deposits in the Crow River area. It is the purpose of this paper to present a brief statement of some of the structural features of these deposits; a summary of other geological information essential for the understanding of the main topic is included. A more detailed report on the area will be published shortly by the Ontario Department of Mines. It is impossible to make full acknowledgment here for all help received, for the writer is in-debted to the management, staff, and consultants of every Company in the camp for generous co-operation in the field and for information, plans, maps, and records placed at his disposal. "PREFACEAt the CIM Annual General Meeting in Quebec City, R.E. Pike of The Toronto-Dominion Bank described how the Canadian banking industry worked with the minerals industry to assemble the large capital requirements for resource projects in Canada and overseas. He developed a profile of the mining industry and Canadian banking, both being important sectors of the Canadian economy and global in context. He also outlined the banking and financing partnership that existed in the past. In looking to the future and challenge that lies ahead f or each industry, Mr. Pike questioned whether the financing practices of the 1970s will be acceptable over the next decade. In that regard, he highlighted the risks that impact on each industry and illustrated how that financing partnership might evolve in response to those forces. The folio wing is a synopsis of his paper.IntroductionThe Canadian mining and metals industry is prominent in the domestic economy and respected internationally. Any measure of its performance illustrates that status-percentage of GNP, employment, exports, capital investment, size relative to other producing nations, etc.Energy, Mines and Resources Canada has forecast that the non-fuel minerals industry will grow in real terms by an average annual rate of 3.0% over the period 1981 to 1991. Using the GNP as reference, that growth in non-fuel mineral production will represent 7.7% of GNP. In translating that growth to capital expenditure, the EMR Canada estimates the aggregate amount at $43.8 billion ('79 dollars) or approximately 12% of total business investment in Canada during the 10-year period.About half of the $43.8 billion will be devoted to the ferrous sector-$8.4 billion in iron ore mining and $12.4 billion in the steel industry. Capital investment in nonferrous s projects is estimated at $13.3 billion, and it is projected at $6.7 billion for industrial minerals. The residual $3.0 .billion is exploration spending."

"Maclaren Forest Products Inc.Lime is commonly used for the neutralization of acid, and the removal of heavy metals in mine waste waters. However, the precipitation of heavy metals as hydroxides must take place under conditions of controlled pH, to produce minimum concentrations of dissolved metals. An account is presented explaining the concepts applied to lime-treatment processes at Bell Mine during the period of a supernatant discharge to Babine Lake; October 18, 1982to January 25, 1983. IntroductionBell Mine of Maclaren Forest Products Inc., Babine Mining Division, an open-pit copper mine, is located on Newman Peninsula, Babine Lake approximately 65 kilometres northeast of the town of Smithers, British Columbia (Fig. 1).A depressed market for copper metal in 1982 forced a management decision to suspend operations at the mine for an indefinite period from October 3 I, 1982. For some time prior to the mine closing date, mine management was concerned about the increasing level of supernatant in the tailings pond , and its possible effects on the stability of the dam when cycloning of mill tailings ceased. Consideration of these potential hazards led to an application being filed with the Provincial Waste Management for a permit to discharge the excess water to Babine Lake. This large lake, an important link with several significant salmon spawning sites, is a major contributor to the British Columbia commercial fishing industry. Jurisdiction for the environmental affairs in the area is shared by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Environmental Protection Service, and the Provincial Waste Management Branch. These agencies were directly concerned in the formulation of discharge permit following joint consultation, and exchange of information with the company on environmental concerns. An approval was finally granted to discharge approximately 1,000,000 cubic metres of supernatant from the tailings impoundment at Bell Mine into Hagan Arm, Babine Lake from October 18, 1982 with a daily discharge not to exceed 9000 cubic metres. Provisions were made that a particular discharge procedure be followed, and that the company would be responsible for setting up a sampling and monitoring program to safeguard the quality of the effluent."

"The need for monitoring the effect of changes in ground stresses due to mining in hard rock has existed for many years. The Mining Research Laboratories of CANMET, EMR have developed a new tool which monitors with high precision the radial deformation in boreholes. The result is the Mining Research Laboratories strain monitoring system (MSMS) which uses the highly stable and very sensitive vibrating wire principle to monitor deformations in relatively large boreholes, e.g. 76 mm to 153 mm diameter.The vibrating wire is strung across a relatively large proving ring and operates at a frequency between 600 to 1800 Hz. The read-out system is based on continuous vibration.The ring is installed with a hydraulic tool and brought into contact with the surrounding rock through precisely machined and guided wedges. The resolution of the system is in the neighbourhood of 4 x 10-4 min/ Hz. The data collection can be carried out with a portable read-out unit and provisions are available for automatic data collection. Stresses may be calculated from strain readings.The system was tested in cooperation with the Centre de recherches minérales at the Niobec Mine in Quebec for the purpose of monitoring the effects of drill drift development and slope mining on surrounding ground stresses.After access was available to the site, 153 mm diameter holes were drilled for the determination of in situ ground stresses. These holes were then used to install the strain monitoring system. The effect of drill drift development and production blasting in stopes C-203-13 and C-203-15 on ground stress distribution could be observed clearly.The horizontal relaxation in the core of a pillar which occurred during mining of adjacent rooms was between 0.082 mm to 0.111 mm. Calculations of stresses from these deformations indicate that the rock material is still in an elastic condition.Roctest of Montreal has obtained a license on the manufacturing and distribution rights. A patent has been registered and CANMET will assist in installation of the MRL strain monitoring system and the interpretation of records."

However, this productivity is now, more than ever, dependent on the continued operation of the equipment. A prolonged breakdown of a critical component can have a significant effect on companies' bottom-line results. As more technologically sophisticated equipment is introduced, maintenance costs become an increasingly important factor for mining companies.Fortunately, sound modern management principles are being used more often in maintenance departments. Progressive maintenance managers are turning to computers to help manage the myriad of details associated with running a maintenance organization.Some maintenance departments in larger mining operations would find it difficult, if not impossible, to operate at current productivity levels without their computer systems. Unfortunately, some other companies gain very little from their computerized systems and would probably be better off without them.How can you be sure that computerized maintenance will improve the maintenance picture for your company?
