Canada ranks second in the list of world consumers of natural gas. In 1923 our production was nearly fifteen million thousand cubic feet valued at $5,800,000. Our output, however, appears very small compared with that of the United States, which in 1923 totalled over one thousand and eight million cubic feet, valued at $240,000,000. Natural gas is found in commercial quantities in three? provinces in Canada. New Brunswick: Natural gas in New Brunswick has been utilized commercially only since 1912,although the investigation of oil and gas possibilities of the province commenced as early as 1859. The annual production is a little more than one-twentieth of the total Canadian production and remains fairly constant from year to year. Ontario: In Ontario the earliest gas wells were drilled in Essex and Welland counties between the years 1885 and 1890. On account of the small demand in Canada the cities of Detroit and Buffalo were supplied with large quantities of gas from these wells, but this export was curtailed in 1898 and finally ceased in 1900. The production of natural gas in Ontario, mainly from fields in Lambton, Kent, Essex, Norfolk, Haldimand and Welland counties, increased rapidly from 1900 until the peak was reached in 1917, when over nineteen million thousand cubic feet valued at $3,641,587 was consumed.

"In this study, laboratory investigation as well as numerical investigation is carried out to ascertain the transition from one mode to another for Semi-circular bend setup. Laboratory investigation is carried by varying the span length (s/2R); crack length (a/R); notch angle (a); and notch thickness (t). The specimen consists of cement, sand and water mixture in a ratio of 1:1:0.5 by weight and are prepared as per the ISRM standards (2014). Tests are conducted by a servo controlled universal testing machine at a strain rate of 0.2 mm/ min. The results are collected in terms of failure load, crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) and images of crack initiation and propagation.Image analysis of laboratory tested samples shows that crack initiates at the notch tip when the notch inclination angle is 0°. As the notch angle increases (i.e. 30° and 60°) the fracture begins to initiate behind the notch tip. The direction of crack propagation in front and back side of the sample is same for notch inclination angle is 0° whereas it differs more and more as crack inclination increases. The transition represents the change in mode of failure from mode I (0°), mode II (30°) and mixed mode I/II fracture (60°).Finite element method used to find the transition based on MTS failure criterion. The inclination of notch is varied like 40, 42, 44, 45, and 50 deg and FEM analysis shows that the transition from mode-I to Mode-II take place at 49 deg. The same procedure can be extended to find the transition from mode-II to mode-III."

Some commercial copper electrowinning facilities use Cyquest N-900 (a polyacrylamide) or HydroStar (a modified polysaccharide) to improve the density and smoothness of copper electrodeposits. However, the effects of these additives have not been studied extensively in the open literature. Thus, the electrodeposition of copper at 40 oC from a non-stirred synthetic electrowinning electrolyte (40 g/L Cu2+, 160 g/L H2SO4, and 20 mg/L Cl-) in the presence of various concentrations of either additive was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). CV results show that neither additive has much effect on the nucleation overpotential of copper electrodeposition on stainless steel. However, Cyquest N-900 polarized the copper deposition reaction upon the return sweep. The EIS data indicates that Cyquest N-900 increases the reaction’s charge transfer resistance and creates a second low frequency loop. HydroStar had minimal effect on the electrochemical data generated by CV or EIS. Thus, the mechanism by which HydroStar affects the copper deposition reaction still needs to be determined.

"Automated information systems are being developed very rapidly in Europe. In France, Belgium and West Germany, more than 70% of the coal production is controlled by these installations. Information on both product ion and the mine environment is produced. For example, at one mine in France the system records the operating times of the compressors and of the refrigeration pumps, counts the number of coal cars passing the unloading point, and controls the principal conveyors and the loading /unloading of the storage bins. In addition, the ventilation air velocity, the methane content and the carbon monoxide content in the return air entry are recorded; an alarm is triggered and the current to the conveyors cut when the gas content exceeds a critical level. The recorded information is used at four levels: (1) for immediate action, (2) for daily reports, (3) for monthly reports and (4) for long-term studies. For example, when any conveyor is stopped for more than 10 minutes, the system controller immediately telephones to learn of the reason. At the end of a shift, the load factor of the conveyors is computed; then monthly an analysis of the causes of low load factors is made. The presentation describes in detail the system that has been installed in more than 20 mines in France."

"IntroductionThe Hat Creek coal field contains low-grade coal deposits which are the thickest in the world. The diamond drilling and geophysical surveys conducted by B.C. Hydro over the last six years have indicated in excess of 2 billion tonnes of sub-bituminous to lignitic coal. The coal field is in the Interior Plateau Dry Belt, about 240 km northeast of Vancouver, and contains two explored, nearsurface coal deposits amenable to surface mining (Fig. I). The No. I deposit contains approximately 740 million tonnes of coal at 17.71 MJ / kg, or 7,600 Btu/lb, at 34.82% ash and 24% moisture. The No. 2 deposit to the south contains appreciably more coal resources at somewhat lower grade, but it has not been explored so extensively because of its higher stripping ratio. Therefore most of the exploration activities to date have been directed toward the development of the No. I deposit. The No . I coal deposit has been selected as the source of fuel for a proposed thermal powerplant to be built about 5 km east of the deposit. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the data obtained from the diamond drilling and the geophysical logging in the No. I deposit between 1974 and 1979. An attempt is made to explain the depositional environment of the Hat Creek coal measures. Because the understanding of the depositional environment in.a particular basin is essentially an evaluation of all the geologic properties of the area, the available geological information in the No. I deposit has been compiled on the basis of consistent criteria. This includes data on the lithology of the coal measures, thickness and areal distribution of the elastic sediments, and on the changes in the megascopic stratigraphic profile based on geophysical correlation. The palynopetrographic relationship and detailed sedimentological aspects are not examined in this paper. Such studies should provide important information relating the causal vegetal and chemical responses of the coals to -environmental changes. Extensive deposition of surficial materials during de-glaciation left most of the area of the Upper Hat Creek Valley devoid of bedrock exposures. Structural and stratigraphic features are hidden beneath glacial deposits and/or post-Eocene volcanics. As a result, the geological interpretation of the Hat Creek coal basin has been based primarily on drilling and geophysical data. Because of this, any explanation of the depositional environment details is tentative until the deposits are stripped for development."

"Concerns about using microdiamonds for resource estimation have been raised by workers because multiple diamond populations exist in many parts of the mantle source region, small diamonds in kimberlite could be exposed to proportionately greater levels of resorption and modification, and euhedral microdiamonds could crystallize immediately prior to kimberlite eruption. This paper addresses these concerns; discusses the geology of the mantle, the principal diamond host rocks, and the impact of mantle processes; compares micro- and macrodiamond properties and features; and outlines steps to identify and mitigate the risk of diamond resorption and its impact on the diamond grade-size relationship.RÉSUMÉ Des travailleurs se sont interrogés sur l’utilisation de microdiamants pour estimer la ressource; en effet, de multiples populations de diamants existent dans plusieurs secteurs de la région source dans le manteau. Des petits diamants dans la kimberlite pourraient être exposés à des niveaux proportionnellement supérieurs de résorption et de modification; de plus, des diamants idiomorphes pourraient cristalliser immédiatement avant l’éruption de la kimberlite. "A method and device are described for sampling diamond-drill core by cutting a continuous fillet of constant cross section from the cylindrical surface of the core throughout appropriate sample lengths. The apparatus employs a tapered, abrasive-set, cutting wheel, the conical cutting surface of which projects slightly into a rectangular core-guiding trough set parallel to the axis of rotation. The depth of fillet and thus the amount of sample per unit length can be regulated by adjusting the core guides. The freshly cut fillet itself, by engaging in a guide beyond the cutting wheel, acts to prevent rotation of the core during operation of the device.The cuttings which form the sample are normally collected in a tray below the cutting-wheel and appear at about 80 per cent -100 mesh. They require little or no further treatment or comminution before analysis. "It is frequently necessary to excavate a tunnel for Civil Engineering purposes, or wells for petroleum exploitation, in laminated rock mass like schists or phyllites or in highly foliated gneisses. The determination of the pre-existing in situ stresses is essential, in order to assure the stability of these excavations. In most cases, the pre-existing triaxial stress field is arbitrary in relation to the tunnel or well axis. For these rock masses the concept of Generalised Plane Strain can be correctly utilized.There are closed form solutions for the calculation of stresses in anisotropic rock masses under Generalised Plane Strain conditions (Lehknitskii, 1981 and Hong , 1994). Based on these analytical solutions, established for the cases of Generalised Plane Strain, a synthetic problem will be formulated: the theoretical in situ stress tensor acting on this rock mass will be determined, with the aid of Bayesian Inverse Problem Techniques, as developed by de Mello Franco (2009). Additionally, the reliability of results obtained will be evaluated, in accordance with the research performed by this author. INTRODUCTIONThe Inverse Problem Technique, as developed in the paper, is based on the definitions and concepts obtained from the current literature and used for the solution of Inverse Problems, but the innovation to be presented is the utilisation of Bayesian Techniques and the determination of the reliability of the results obtained. This will be shown in a synthetic example where the determination of the in situ stress tensor, from strain measurements in a drill hole is supposedly performed. It is assumed that this drill has its axis arbitrarily placed in relation to the rock mass. Generalised Plane Strain conditions will hold for use with problem. The equations of Beltrami – Mitchel, in agreement to Lekhnitskii (1981) and Ong (1994), will be used in this synthetic case, for calculating strains, hypothetically measured in the hole before the final excavations. Finally a synthetic example for the determination of the in situ stress in a fully anisotropic rock mass, based on Bayesian Techniques and its reliability, developed in de Mello Franco (2009) is presented."

Production at Knob Lake is currently proceeding at depths which may be as much as 200 feet below the original standing water table. In order to produce a more saleable product and to improve operating and maintenance conditions, it is necessary to depress the water table below the mining level. Considerable success has been achieved by drilling deep wells in strategic locations and installing vertical tur-bine pumps at depths of up to 400 feet. "This paper demonstrates the selection of grinding circuit technology for a number of recent projects including discussion of the key drivers and the role of energy efficiency. Decreasing head grades combined with a strong and sustained increase in operating costs has forced miners to examine increased project size, increased equipment capacity and efficiency improvements in order to reduce their unit operating costs and improve overall project economics. Comminution energy consumption, safety and capital cost considerations play a critical role in the success of projects. This paper presents some key guidelines for a successful and cost effective comminution circuit design and includes a case study on three projects, outlining the issues and the drivers which led to the ultimate circuit selection and the critical role that energy efficiency played.INTRODUCTIONComminution circuits for minerals processing are selected based on their suitability and efficiency in reducing run-of-mine ore to the desired feed size for the downstream process. The input material (ore) properties and downstream process requirements are the key determinants and there are standard approaches for each circumstance.The minerals processing industry has been a fast adaptor of efficiency improvements based on increasing capacity of equipment (e.g. trucks, crushers, mills, pumps) but less successful in adapting radically new technologies that disrupt incumbent flowsheets or processes.The installed power of grinding mills has increased linearly over the past 25 years (Meka & Lane, 2010) and pumps and classification equipment have kept pace. The autogenous grinding (AG) and semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mills displaced stage crushing as a dominant method of coarse rock breakage in many applications causing crusher manufactures to increase the capacity of cone crushers to meet the competitive demand.Examples of new comminution technology in the 20th and 21st centuries are the development and adoption of cyclone classification in the 1940s (Newtech, 2016), AG milling in the late 1950s, vertical grinding mills in the 1980s, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) also in the 1980s and ultrafine milling technology in the 1990s (Meka & Lane, 2010)."

"A specific test set-up has been developed to study at the lab-scale the high-temperature behavior of aluminium alloys in conditions close to those experienced by thick plates during hot-rolling. A particular attention is paid to reproducing both the stress triaxiality and strain fields that exist in plate during rolling. In addition to standard ductility measurements by means of secondary tensile tests (STT), multi-step plane strain compression (PSC) tests have been performed to mimic hot-rolling pass schedules. Tool and sample geometries were adapted to allow low h/a ratios (h= average specimen thickness, a= tool width) and thus guarantee depressive stress conditions at the center of the specimen during most of the test. Such conditions resulting in porosity opening can then be used to investigate the impact of rolling conditions on damage evolution. The mechanical testing was combined with post-mortem high-resolution ultrasonic scans allowing to detect small amounts of damage and quantify its evolution as a function of processing parameters such as strain and temperature. The test set-up was validated on two 2050-type AlCuLi alloys with different susceptibilities to high temperature embrittlement.INTRODUCTION Aluminium thick plates are widely used in the aerospace industry, mainly as semi-products to be machined for internal structure parts of wings (spars, ribs) and fuselage (frame). The conversion route of such products always involves a hot-rolling step, the conditions of which (temperature, speed, pass schedule) have to be optimized to maximize both mechanical properties and final plate quality. This goal cannot always be efficiently achieved by full-scale industrial trials as (a) cost limits the number of possible test conditions and (b) it is often difficult to change one parameter alone. That is why there is a need for laboratory-scale tests able to mimic the rolling process in terms of temperature, strain rate, stress triaxiality and deformation. Most laboratory hot-rolling mills do not adequately simulate industrial processing routes, especially in terms of heat loss, deformation speed and rolling geometry (maximum roll gap vs. work roll diameter). Concerning thick plate, it is of interest to achieve both similar deformation and L/h ratio (L=arc of contact, h=mean gauge) per pass as the industrial schedule because they are simultaneously involved in damage evolution and void closure during hot forming processes (Saby, 2014)."

"For a mine section comprising 100 different stoping activities, there are ~10158 different possible stoping sequences to explore in the mine schedule optimization search and this figure is indicative of the challenge posed in maximising profitability through mine schedule optimization. Any viable excavation timetable must satisfy all conditions that will constrain feasible sequences. In general, consideration of additional constraint will tend to reduce profitability. Geomechanical constraints on mine schedules, introduced with the aim of avoiding excavation instabilities, can be established for underground mine schedule optimization processes but, currently, this is done only rather crudely; precedence relations between excavation activities (stoping or development) are encoded to produce particular stope sequence patterns (e.g. ‘chevron’ or pyramidal sequences).The work reported aimed to investigate automated processes for formulation of such geomechanical constraints. The timetable optimization approach to the problem precipitated a fresh look at time dependent, and excavation sequence dependent, deformation. Abundant evidence emerged that supported the notion that any methodology developed that failed to account for such time and sequence dependencies was itself bound to failure. Yet, it was also recognised that any deviation at all from an assumption of linear elasticity for geomechanical numerical modeling, adopted to inform geomechanical constraint formulation, would rapidly lead to impractical levels of computational effort.Thus the approach presented here represents a compromise: the elastic stress fields induced by individual mining activities are computed for each activity, independently considered within a computational domain identical to that of all other activities. These are stored in a database. Instability risk for a specific sequence of mine activities can be assessed through superimposition of stress fields drawn from the pre-computed database. Time stamps allocated to events corresponding to the excavation processes permit the conversion of the sequence of elastic stress fields into a time table of stress fields. For specific locations within the computational domain, the aggregate effect of the sequence of mine activities leads to stress-time histories having a castellated appearance, a result of the near instantaneous response of an elastic medium to the excavation perturbations. Time dependent deformation responses are crudely allowed for through the re-profiling these castellated histories through graphical construction of curved responses, where the curve gradients are related to a viscous parameter. Such curves form the basis for a geomechanical constraint formulation to be adopted for mine schedule optimization."

"IntroductionIn respect to The Human Dimension by M. Phyllis Bray, this author's impression is that research on long distance commuting (LDC) is long overdue. This type of mining is not new to many workers, especially those from areas such as the Maritimes, who have had to look for work away from their families for at least a decade. Perhaps to the industry the over-all set-up is new, but to workers who have faced mine shut-downs in their areas finding a job was the main objective and if the security of long-term employment was evident, then the families might join them later. This was the situation with which the writer' s family was faced.LDC LifestyleBeing the wife of an underground miner, the author has personally experienced this lifestyle for almost 10 years, and has never experienced accommodation in a company town. The first five years of marriage were spent in a small rural municipality within 50 miles of the worksite, but the town had industry separate from mining and was not affected by the mine shut-down.Since her LDC lifestyle began her family has been pretty much city-based, out-of-province commuters with two children and a third to arrive some years later. She therefore lived a fairly normal married life with a husband home daily. The author has experienced life with a husband who worked away for five-day stretches and then drove long distances to be home weekends or the portion of time left over from driving and fatigue. She has done the 3D-days in/l4-days out routine, and for approximately the past four years has been existing on a two-weeks in/two-weeks out ritual .The author does not agree that the ""bottom line is that mining families go where the jobs are"" . The miners go where the jobs are and the families fend for themselves with the assistance of the pay cheque making it home each pay period.Perhaps because there are many personal frustrations with this type of lifestyle, perceptions may be inaccurate. Having only dealt with underground operations, there may be gross differences between the pressures and demands of other forms of mining."

For the past year, Lowphos Ore Ltd. has been operating two desliming hydroseparators on a fully automatic basis. Automatic operation is achieved by sensing the position of the silica-magnetite interface and automatically controlling the jet water addition to maintain a desired interface position. The system further provides automatic control of the underflow pump speed in order to assist in maintaining interface position when an <Ore change occurs. Interface position is maintained at 12 inches below the surface and is -controlled within plus or minus one inch. Metallurgical unit recovery is held above 98.5 per cent, and a 10 to 12 per cent increase in concentrate grade is normally achieved.

The Silvermines area of north County Tipperary in Ireland has experienced mining activity for over a thousand years, with lead, zinc, copper, barite and sulphur being extracted from a series of Carboniferous limestones. The last mine to operate in the area was closed in 1993. A legacy of contamination and derelict surface structures remain. Following the death of cattle in the vicinity in 1999, a governmental Inter-Agency Group was established to conduct an investigation. The ?Silvermines Rehabilitation Project? resulted, and included a proposal for the development of a Mine Waste Management Facility (MWMF) to act as a repository for waste materials from problematic sites across the area. The nature of the setting supported an effective solution from both a cost and performance perspective; and with limited maintenance requirements. Locating the MWMF where most wastes were identified would help minimise handling and relocation of materials. This position coincided with an area of artesian groundwater pressures. The resulting MWMF design consisted of a perimeter engineered embankment with the crest elevation designed to just exceed the groundwater piezometric surface. The base would remain unlined and groundwater permitted to rise up into and saturate the contained in-situ tailings deposits and imported mine wastes. The proposed system thus benefited from the ?wet cover? approach to minimising further oxidation of wastes and metal leaching, but without the usual accompanying outward hydraulic gradient and leachate management issues. A sub cap drainage layer with downstream outlet was incorporated to prevent any possibility of hydraulic rupture following an unexpected rise in groundwater heads. Leakage rates from the MWMF were deemed to essentially be driven by surface infiltration rates alone (characteristic of a ?dry cover? approach), with the proposed composite capping system simulated to perform at an infiltration rate of less than 1 mm per year. A toe drain was incorporated with the perimeter containment system, and this collection together with diverted neighbouring drainage was directed under gravity to a dedicated Passive Treatment System (PTS). Overall, effluent water quality from the PTS has been predicted to reflect an annual mass metals removal in the order of 95% below baseline.

The through-put and energy efficiency of an autogenous (AG) grinding mill are adversely affected by variability in rock size and rock competency. This applies to both fully autogenous and semi-autogenous (SAG) grinding circuits. In this paper we focus on an approach to overcome the problem of inconsistent mill through-put related to variability in mill feed size and rock competency. The focus is on ores containing hard, competent rock. This approach consists of preparing feed to an autogenous mill that contains 20% coarse media rock and 80% of material crushed to pass 37 mm. Results of pilot-scale testing for two iron-ores will be presented to show that a 10% to 12% reduction in unit energy consumption is possible with prepared feed, compared with feeding the mill with conventional primary crusher discharge.

Turner Valley is in the foothills of the Rocky mountains, at an altitude of 4,000 feet, and is 42 miles south west of Calgary. The present producing area is 8 miles long by 1 1/2 miles wide, while drilling is being carried on over an area of 10 miles by 2 miles . There are 32 wells producing, 26 wells drilling, and 17 wells shut down, making a total of 75 wells, which range in depth from 2,160 feet to 5,900 feet, varying according toa the well location on the anticline centre wells being shallower than those located on the flank. The first indication of possible production in this field was a gas seepage on the banks of Sheep river, in what is now the Royalite plant yard (Figure 1). Geologically, this seepage proved to be located on an anticline running through the valley in a southwesterly direction. The Calgary Petroleum Products Company was formed in 1912, and under the direction of Mr. A. W. Dingman, President, and associates, the first well was drilled. Production was obtained in this well. Gas was found in several horizons from 884 feet to 3,960 feet, and oil at 1,557, 2,718 and 3,839 feet. In May, 1914, oil was struck at a depth of 3,839 feet, this being a light straw-coloured oil of 60 gravity, which was blown spraying from the well accompanied by three to four million feet of gas. The latter contained some 200 grains of hydrogen sulphide per 100 cu. ft., giving it the disagreeable odour so well known in Turner Valley gas. This strike caused considerable excitement and started the famous 1914 boom, when some 400 oil companies were formed. The well referred to produced from two to five barrels of 60 gravity oil per day, and 4,000,000 cu. ft. of gas. The oil was used in the crude form in cars and trucks.

"The paper begins with a brief summary of Professor Müller’s formation of the ISRM and the contents of the previous six Müller lectures with their emphases on rock fractures. The geological origin of fractures is described via a deformational spectrum diagram and a matrix characterising the consequences of a sequence of superimposed deformational events. The different fracture frequencies encountered along lines in all directions through a fractured rock mass are explained. The value of computer modelling and simulation is demonstrated through an example of the effects of fracture zones on the distribution of the in situ stress field. The need to establish the validity of computer programs, i.e., that the modelling/simulation, does actually represent the rock reality, is discussed with reference to the work of the DECOVALEX project. Finally, examples are given of the effects of rock fractures on engineering design and construction, from pre-split blasting to caverns.INTRODUCTIONIt is a great honour to have been chosen as the recipient of the ISRM 7th Müller Award and I am grateful to the representatives of the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) National Groups who voted for me. In addition, I am especially pleased because my working life in rock mechanics and rock engineering has been devoted to understanding the geometry and mechanical properties of rock fractures and rock masses—which were the key subjects that Professor Müller promoted. In the ISRM 50th Anniversary Commemorative Book, Hudson and Lamas (2012), Professor Charles Fairhurst notes that on 24 May 1962, i.e., the day before the constitutional meeting of the ISRM took place in Salzburg, a reporter asked Professor Müller, “Do we know the strength of rock?”, to which Professor Müller replied, “For rock tested in the laboratory, yes. For a rock mass, no. This is what we need to determine. This is why we need an International Society for Rock Mechanics”. Also, in his Opening Address at the 1st ISRM Congress in Lisbon, Professor Müller, as the then ISRM President stated,“Many experts agree with me that discontinuity and anisotropy are the most characteristic properties of the material rock and that the properties of jointed media depend much more upon the fabrics bond of the unit rock block system than upon the rock material. Therefore any theoretical investigation of that material has to go its own ways, in the same way as the construction material of soils years ago suggested to soil mechanics its own methods, which differ greatly from the way of thinking of technical mechanics”."

In order to make increased use of automation in copper smelting, it is evident that a useful first step .world be the accurate determination of the copper end point in the converter operation. After laboratory tests, the copper end points in a copper converter at Gaspe Copper Mmes Ltd. were determined without reference to melt samples or other observations. The results indicated that the rapid measurement of the S02 level in the gas released from the converter has potential as a new and independent method of determining the copper end point in converter operation.
