Geostatistical analysis, resource estimation and three-dimensional modelling of the gold grade distribution was undertaken using exploration drillhole data taken from the Mt Leyshon gold mine. The main aims of the project were to provide an independent estimate of the primary gold resource and to improve the estimate by better understanding the statistical distribution of gold and the establishment of more robust variograms. These criteria have been achieved by the removal of low grade sub-populations, increased sample size and access to data from the most recent drilling program. The outcome of this statistical study has led to a lowering of the sill and nugget variance of the variograms used. Distinct geometric anisotropy was identified in all the resource estimation zones and was used to model gold grade distribution.Two independent resource estimates were established from the primary gold resource, one based on a geostatistical estimator (kriging) and the other on a traditional estimator (inverse distance weighting). Both methods were compared with a contemporary kriged estimate by Mt Leyshon Gold Mines Ltd.

Two key elements in the design of a pastefill or high density backfill system are the preparation of the backfill material and its distribution underground. This paper examines these two areas. Owing to the essentially impervious nature of total mill tailings, preparation of pastefill and high density fill from current tailings involves a physical dewatering process. There are currently three methods available for this process: Vacuum or pressure filters. These represent the ætraditionalÆ approach to the preparation of pastefill. Paste production storage mechanism. This is a thickening/storage mechanism developed with the specific objective of producingpaste/high density backfills. Fluidization. This system utilises silos fitted with simple dewatering devices and nozzles. Recently developed by CANMET, it provides the simplest and most economical approach.This paper describes and compares the three preparation methods, from a practical and an economic point of view. Once the pastefill/high density fill has been prepared and binder added, the backfill must be distributed underground into the stopes. A fundamental factor in the design of a distribution system is the rheology of the material. No two materials will exhibit the same properties, and a sequence of rheological and related testing is required prior to the completion of the design of the underground distribution system. This paper covers the testwork normally required and discusses the fundamental design parameters of pastefill distribution systems. The final section of this paper summarises the use of pastefill at three mines in Canada.

The 40 Moz Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea is the worldÆs largest, low-sulfidation, epithermal gold deposit, in terms of contained gold. The deposit has average grades of 2.42 g/t Au (LGL Resources Reserves Update, 2008) and gold is hosted primarily in refractory pyrite. Lihir Island is part of the 150 km long, Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni, alkalic, volcanic island chain located in the New Ireland basin. Five volcanic blocks comprise Lihir; Plio-Pliestocene Huniho, Kinami and Luise volcanic edifices are built on top of remnant Pleistocene Wurtol Wedge and Londolovit Block (Wallace et al, 1983). The Ladolam gold deposit is located in the central portion of the dissected Luise volcanic edifice and is composed of four main orebodies: 1. Minifie, 2. Lienetz, 3. Coastal, and 4. Kapit. An active geothermal system is overprinted on the ore deposit, localised along north-trending lineaments, and is expressed as hot mud pools and fumaroles. The focus of open pit mapping and drill core logging, as part of ongoing PhD research, has been in the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies. The deposit geology is grouped into four main phases: 1. volcano-sedimentary host rocks, 2. porphyry-style biotite alteration and related hydrothermal breccias and veins, 3. epithermal-style breccias and veins, and 4. modern geothermal alteration. Gold is associated with epithermal-style alteration and mineralisation. Ongoing observations of the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies are highlighting differences in the geology and paragenetic histories. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The flotation behaviour of the Hilton ore of Mount Isa Mines has been examined in the presence of two collectors (sodium ethyl xanthate (Ex) and sodium diisobutyldithiophosphinate (3418A)) over a range of flotation Eh values and collector additions. Tests were also conducted in the absence of collector to determine the relative contributions of natural and self-induced floatability of the major minerals in the feed. In these tests the influence of metabisulphite on the self-induced floatability of the minerals was also determined. Attention focussed on optimising the selectivity of galena flotation. It is shown that the Hilton ore sample contained lower levels of naturally hydrophobic iron sulphide minerals than are generally contained in the Mount Isa lead-zinc ore. Furthermore, the self-induced floatability of galena was less than that exhibited by the galena in the Mount Isa lead-zinc ore. Sodium metabisulphite (MBS) reduced the self-induced flotation of galena but had no effect on the natural floatability of the iron sulphide minerals.

The effect of delay time on fragmentation has been discussed for a long period but rarely in a satisfactory and unbiased way. Despite the efforts of many researchers, delay selection for fragmentation improvement or optimisation remains a controversial issue. Large-scale tests have been plagued with scarcity and scatter of observations, while small-scale tests have been associated with boundary effects and energy losses. Theoretical work is often used to produce explanations for available measurements or tries to simplify wave propagation and wave interaction to guide observation and practical work. The present work analyses results obtained from a relatively large number of small-scale experiments in blocks made of grout, and re-analyses results of previous experiments, to conclude on the effect of delay on fragmentation. It is shown that the main contribution of the delay is found in the fragmentation of the larger fragments of the blast, while the small fractions show almost no effect. Samples, where copper liners were used to inhibit penetration of detonation products in the rock mass, showed effect of delay only when short times were used and steady but poor fragmentation when long delays were used. Based on small-scale experiments, it appears that the fragmentation is optimised when a hole fires prior to the radial cracks, produced by the previous hole, reach the free face of the blast. Gas penetration may result in the development of few more fractures that affect the fragmentation of the largest particles of the blast.CITATION:Katsabanis, P D and Omidi, O, 2015. A generalized void diffusion model for subsidence prediction has been developed based on theoretical concepts and physical principles. The general form of the model is a three-dimensional differential equation. With a few assumptions on the characteristics of overburden strata overlying typical room-and-pillar mining or longwall mining systems, specific solutions for the differential equation were obtained. A brief description of these solutions and their applications in the United States and China are presented in this paper.

Aqueous oxidation in an autoclave at ele- vated temperatures and oxygen partial pres- sures is applied to Philippine gold-bearing sulfide ores and concentrates which respond poorly to conventional cyanidation. The gold concentrates are recovered from ores and tail- ings material using the patented OMLI Process (the OMLI Process is able to upgrade tailings material analyzing 0.50 g/t Au to a concen- trate with a grade of 5 g/t Au or better). The results show that with aqueous pre- oxidation of the concentrates ahead of cyani- dation a four-fold increase in gold recovery is obtained compared with straight cyanida- tion. The observed differences in response to the pre-treatment step between various mate- rials are correlated with their mineralogical composition. The chemistry of aqueous oxida- tion is also presented.

Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited operates a large base metal property near Bathurst, New Brunswick in eastern Canada. Nominal capacity for the underground mining operation and concentrator is 10 250 DMT/day. Four concentrates are produced by differential flotation technology to recover minerals containing copper, lead, zinc and silver. Two characteristics of the Brunswick ores have a major impact on mineral processing operations. The mineralogy of the ore is complex with a total sulphide mineral content of 85 per cent. In addition, the ore is extremely fine-grained, and satisfactory liberation is difficult to achieve. These characteristics directly influence flotation selectivity and thereby affect metallurgical performance. Significant improvements in metallurgical performance have been achieved through the application of basic grinding and flotation principles using conventional milling equipment. Current operating practice and the metallurgical advancements are detailed.

The objective in design of an excavation in a jointed rock mass is to achieve a prescribed degree of control of rock mass displacement around the excavation. Any excavation in jointed rock usually involves slip and separation along discontinuities as well as translation and ro- tation of constituent rock blocks. Thus, any acceptable model of behavior around an excava- tion must be capable of simulating the force displacement paths followed by the constituent elements, including rigid body translation and rotation. The distinct element method models such behavior by simulating the rock mass as an assemblage of rock blocks which interact through corner and edge contacts. Discontinuities are regarded as boundary interactions between blocks with joint behavior prescribed for these inter- actions. Introduction of structural element logic allows a variety of installed support sys- tems to be modeled. The response of the support to axial, transverse, and flexural loads is based on explicit algorithms similar to those used in the distinct element formulation. This allows large displacements and rotations and general non-linear constitutive behavior for both the support elements and the interface with the rock. This paper describes both the distinct element and structural element formulations and demonstrates several applications involving sup- port interaction with jointed rock.

The gabbroid-hosted nickel sulphide deposits of the East Kimberley constitutes one of Australia's most prospective emerging nickel provinces. Sally Malay Nickel NL (SMN), a wholly owned subsidiary of Gindalbie Gold NL, has established the East Kimberley Nickel Project (EKNP). The EKNP project tenements cover about 2000 sq km. The tenements cover the northern potion of a corridor containing mineralised or potentially mineralised layered mafic-ultramafic intrusions which includes the Ni-Cu-Co sulphide deposits at Sally Malay and Keller Creek. The Sally Malay deposit is located 225 km south-south-west of Kununurra (Figure 1). The sealed Great Northern Highway passes 3 km to the east of the deposit.

Iron ore mining is a major source of export income for Australia. However with the decreasing reserves of high-grade, low-phosphorus hematite ore, there is mounting pressure to provide consistent mineralogical ore grade. Enhanced 3D characterisation and modelling are crucial to respond to these exigent requirements. To tackle this problem a revolutionary mine-based, imaging system (based on Visible Near Infrared û Short Wave Infrared reflectance spectroscopy û VNIR-SWIR) has been developed. This innovative, CSIRO-built prototype produces mineralogical maps that will have a major impact on ore grade characterisation. Australian iron ore companies will benefit immensely by pioneering this emerging and unique mining technology. The significance of VNIR-SWIR reflectance spectroscopy is well demonstrated with field portable spectrometers and airborne hyperspectral systems. At the mine-scale level, this newly developed imaging system will allow accurate and objective mineralogical mapping of mine faces and benches with very closely spaced sampling. These spectral mineral maps will improve deposit delineation and bring accurate and objective ore grade characterisation that will minimise drilling and enhance ore recovery. This will in turn lead to cost saving and better long-term block model planning. This system will also improve safety for mine geologists in providing mineralogical information at a distance, avoiding the need for any close contact with the mine face. The mine imaging concept is a logical response to the industry need for automatic and objective tools for sustainable and future mining practices.

Up to 80 per cent of the copper in a bornite ore can be quickly leached with percolating acidified ferric sulphate solutions. The upper limit for rapid copper extraction is set by the conversion of bornite to slowly dissolving chalcopyrite. The dissolution occurs in two stages: a rapid linear initial stage, followed by a slow, non-linear stage. The initial step is largely controlled by the rate of oxidant supply (Fe2(S04)3); temperature is not an important variable during the initial reaction. The second leaching stage is controlled by chemical and physical factors and is temperature dependent. The initial copper leaching rates are insensitive to both the concentration of the ferrous sulphate reaction product, and the sulphuric acid concentration.

The Coeur d'Alene mining district in northern Idaho, USA is the second largest producer of silver in the world. Mesothermal silver-lead-zinc veins occur in the metasedimentary rocks of the Belt Supergroup with five main types of associated hydrothermal alteration: 1) feldspar destruction, 2) hydrothermal bleaching, 3) carbonatisation, 4) sulfidation, and 5) silicification. Hydrothermal bleaching is characterised by hematite destruction with associated siderite and quartz veins and veinlets, coarse euhedral pyrite and magnetite. Bleached zones envelop both mineralised and barren veins and extend for metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Carbonatisation consists of addition of siderite, which occurs as veins, veinlets, stockwork, irregular blebs or spots, and coarsely disseminated grains, depending on the relative distance from the main vein structure. Siderite envelops nearly all mineralised veins, relates to all other alteration types and extends from several metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Pyrite and galena alteration dominate sulfidation and are associated with some mineralised veins. Pyrite alteration strongly correlates with siderite alteration and exists in three main forms: a) very fine-grained pyrite flooding, which can extend for metres to tens of metres into wall rocks; b) coarse-grained, euhedral pyrite, which is sporadic and associated with the redox boundary in hydrothermally bleached zones; and c) small isolated zones (6 - 15 cm) of medium-grained, subhedral to euhedral pyrite associated with pervasive siderite alteration. Where present, disseminated galena extends for metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Silicification is characterised by veins, veinlets, stringers, irregular patches and variable hardness in siltites and commonly appears in association with hydrothermal bleaching and siderite alteration. Although related to mineralisation, silicification is sporadic and in most places a clear envelope around mineralised veins cannot be identified.

Digital computers, by virtue of their capacity for high speed repetitive calculation at low cost, are finding increasing application to routine calcula- tions in the mining industry. In this paper techniques are shown whereby the use of computers can be extended to more complex tasks. The regular calculation of grades and tonnages of material to be extracted from specified areas of an operating open pit is a necessary part of production planning. In this paper it is shown how these calculations can be carried out by computer. thereby freeing planning staff from manual calculation. An operating open-pit mine can be described in terms of drill logs, geological ore boundaries and pit perimeters at various levels. These form the data base which must be suitable for frequent updating to incorporate new information. A suite of computer programmes is described which operates on this data base to calculate tonnages and grades of ore within extensions to the perimeters as indicated to the system by planning staff. Possible future extensions are discussed.

This paper describes a case history of using an integrated geochemical and hydrogeological approach to predicting solute transport from gold mine tailings in highly fractured volcanic terrain. Two modes of transport are identified, namely discrete fissure flow and diffuse seepage through the intervening weathered rock. A simple mass balance approach is used to predict concentrations at points of emergence because most of the seepage migration will be by way of the discrete fissures where advective transport will predominate. The mass balance method has been modified to allow for natural degradation of weak acid dissociable cyanide. The long term effects of diffuse seepage are also examined.

The object of this paper is to present a brief overview of applications of radioisotopes in mineral processing. The emphasis is towards on-line applications, and is to present the broad picture rather than become involved in the details of particular applications. For a more detailed and comprehensive coverage, the reader is referred to the International Atomic Energy Agency International Symposium on Nuclear Techniques in Exploration, Extraction and Pro- cessing of Mineral Resources, held in Vienna 7-11 March, 1977. Because of space limitations here, we have inmost cases restricted coverage to those applications of radioisotopes within the direct experience of Amdel and Australian research bodies. Radioisotopes spontaneously emit energy in tiie Form of a and S particles, and electromag- netic radiation. The electromagnetic radiation is generally referred to as y-radiation when it originates from the nucleus, and X-radiation when originating from the electrons orbiting the nucleus. X-ray and y-ray energies overlap, with X-rays extending from a few electron volts (%') up to about 100 keV. Gamma rays in the useful energy range extend from a few keV up to .feV.

There are several factors that are increasing the need for new graduates to be ready to design and manage more autonomous operations at mines. Autonomous controls and systems range from the start-up, control, and shutdown of processing plants to the autonomous operation of vehicles. These operations require the workers, engineers, and management to have additional skills for programming, debugging, tasking, and maintaining the equipment. The future survivability of many mining operations will be influenced by a company’s willingness and ability to understand, accept, and utilise this technology for safe and productive operations. This is an educational opportunity and challenge that needs to be addressed throughout the student’s experience, from first year to graduate level. This paper discusses the lessons learned from a decade of multidepartment effort at all student levels and many courses that are able to incorporate data science, controls, and autonomous design into the already topic-rich national curriculum. This approach also exposes other engineering disciplines to the mining industry which is a valuable recruiting tool for talent outside of the mining engineering departments.

Two innovative ground reinforcement products have been developed for use in the mining industry. One of these products is a high strength polyethylene (HOPE) bar for use as a rib bolt in underground coal mining and as a corrosion proof tendon in open pit mines. The other product is a cable bolt (Ultrastrand) which demonstrates enhanced load transfer and is available in continuous lengths. Ultrastrand's exceptional in- situ performance and versatility makes it ideal for mechanised installation in both underground and surface mining operations. Details of these products are presented and results from labortaory and field trials are discussed.

Aberfoyle's Hellyer Division has filtered very fine flotation concentrates using two different makes of pressure filter. At the Luina concentrator a Larox pressure filter was used to treat a combined Pb + Zn or bulk concentrate. At the Hellyer concentrator two Lasta pressure filters are being used to filter copper/silver, lead, zinc and bulk concentrates. Operating parameters and performance at both operations are described. In both concentrators it was found that correct cloth selection was critical and that cloth failures contributed significantly to downtime. Thorough preventative maintenance progammes were required to ensure adequate availability of both makes of filter.
