The provision of electrical power is an important consideration in project development. The first step to be taken in this area is to assess the power requirements of the project. The alternatives of laking a supply from a power authority or providing local generation can then be considered. This requires additional defmition of the probable characteristics of the supply.The availability of authority power in Australia is limited by the extent of the state power grids. Recent developments now allow these grids to be extended and their load capacity increased to meet major load increases at less cost than was previously possible.The options for local generation include diesel, gas turbine, steam, hydro, solar and wind, each having its particular performance characteristics and costs. The choice of fuel for diesel, gas turbine, and steam plant likewise involves consideration of a range of factors. The arrangements adopted for five recent Australian remote development projects indicate how some of these aspects influence the decision on power supply.

For many mining operations the challenge of equalling World Best Practices has become the key motivator for increasing mine productivities and for lowering total costs. In most instances this will only be achieved if mines optimise their total system rather than minimising specific costs within unit operations. In the past, drilling and blasting have been viewed as a cost to be minimised rather than operations which should have their impacts fully leveraged. Once a hardrock orebody is defined the activity which has the most substantial impact in determining the efficiency of a mining operation is the blasting. The output from a blast affects every downstream operation; only by understanding the extent and interactions can the mine be optimised. Substantial improvements to hardrock mining, quarrying and excavation operations are achievable. Instead of seeking the regular one to three per cent improvements based on reduction of consumables, mine operators would be well advised to go for much bigger targets of ten to 30 per cent by fully leveraging the drill and blast operations.

The new patented2 design improves separation performance and allows more stable operation, particularly when operating the decanter as a thickener.

The pitfalls, pleasures and management issues associated with international and remote projects are diverse.However, no problem is insurmountable and if an engineering team chooses (by luck or good planning) to push through the difficulties, success can mean an extremely satisfying experience for individuals and a significant, positive result for an organisation.International projects are not for the faint hearted or inflexible. Working in foreign lands with people who may or may not speak English and who may not initially respect you can become mentally and physically tiring.Sometimes the challenges are not fully explained to individuals in advance. Individuals then often learn about the challenges ù and discover solutions ù on the job. While this initially puts great pressure on individuals, matters improve eventually, especially when the locals come to understand that you are on site to make a positive difference.This paper will discuss aspects of a recent international project including meeting international clientsÆ expectations, dealing with cultural differences, social reckoning, environmental issues, and personal challenges. Specifically, it will cover aspects of working within a Russian cultural setting and overcoming social barriers.The paper also presents coping strategies for long periods of time spent away from home in remote places with extremes in weather beyond the normal experience of most Australians. For example, dealing with the effects of the spring thaw and coping with temperature ranges of -45 to +45¦C.Lastly, and possibly most importantly, there will be a focus on the role of translators. They have the power to make an engineer everyoneÆs best friend or, on your behalf, to order cold chicken liver and heart salad for lunch. This is a welcome opportunity to exchange ideas about educating for a profession in mining and metallurgy, and I shall use it to highlight the ways in which educators, the industry, and the profession can help one another make that educa- tion better. This is home ground for me in more ways than one. As the executive head of a uni- versity perhaps I may speak as an educator; and there is still, I hope, enough of the metallurgist in me to allow me to speak of what we metal- lurgists and mining engineers can do to help the educators. Another interest should be declared, too. Among the educating agencies I shall focus on universities; among universities I shall further focus on my own, the University of New South Wales. I know it best; and, more to the point, we are one of the minority that offer a full profes- sional training in mining and metallurgy. Further, we are as a university very much concerned- more than most-with specifically professional education, and especially with education in the professions based on science and technology. Mining and metallurgy have of course played a central role, from earliest times onwards, in the history and development of science and tech- nology. In that role they have been both pro- ducers and consumers of new knowledge. Indeed the whole new attitude to knowledge that began to spread in 16th and 17th century Europe owed a great deal to the interests and traditions of the miner and the metallurgist. The first modern text- book of mining and metallurgy, George Agricola's De Re Metallica, is very much more than a spec- ialist handbook; it is a major landmark in intel- lectual and cultural history.

The Nickel Rim Depth Cu-Ni-PGE deposit, discovered by Falconbridge Limited in 1993, illustrates several trends in exploration in the Sudbury area. Recent discoveries tend to be deep, high grade, footwall hosted, close to or straddle property boundaries and made using a multi-disciplinarian exploration approach that integrates economic considerations with geology, metal geochemistry and geophysics (borehole EM). The Nickel Rim deposit occurs down dip of Inco's Victor Deep deposit (4.2 million tonnes at 2.25 per cent Ni, 7.30 per cent Cu) in the eastern margin of the Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC) at a depth of 2650 m. Before commencing drilling an economic evaluation was done to determine the minimum size needed to be economic at the expected depths and determine the expected value of an exploration venture. The subsequent surface exploration program discovered a drill indicated, undiluted mineral inventory of 1.6 million tonnes of 1.58 per cent Ni, 10.13 per cent Cu, 4.17g/t Pt and 3.50 g/t Pd including 519 000 tonnes of 4.13 per cent Ni, 25.53 per cent Cu, 9.76 g/t Pt and 8.42 g/t Pd. The deposit is hosted by gneiss, migmatite, gabbro and pseudotachylite (Sudbury Breccia) 100 m below the base of the SIC.

The Mt Keith ultramafic intrusive extends for about 200 kilometres from Agnew in the south to Wiluna in the north. It forms the host for a number of nickel sulphide orebodies including Mt Keith and Honeymoon Well. Long fibre minerals are associated with the orebodies. The presence of these minerals impacts on the issue of tailings disposal from several standpoints, particularly the slurry beaching properties and dust generation from dry beaches. Central thickened discharge (CTD) is an innovative method of tailings disposal that involves stacking tailings in a low conical hill instead of storing them in cells. In appropriate circumstances this leads to savings in capital costs and operating expenditure. The method was introduced to Australia in 1981, and is currently employed at four operating mines, Elura and Peak Gold, both at Cobar in NSW, McArthur River in the Northern Territory, and Union Reefs near Pine Creek, also in the Northern Territory. It is the proposed method for Century Zinc and Ernest Henry, both in Queensland. The paper describes laboratory test work and design parameters for the application of the method to tailings disposal at Honeymoon Well and compares them with comparable data for other CTD systems. Of particular relevance for design purposes are beach slope, density, and water recovery. Wind tunnel tests were conducted on the Honeymoon Well tailings samples to investigate dust generation from the dry beach surface and it was concluded that dust generation from an undisturbed beach would not occur because of crusting.

A re-evaluation of the Hampton Boulder prospect in the early eighties resulted in a decision to proceed with mine development in December 1985. A 500 000 tpa gold treatment plant was commissioned in December 1986. The treatment facility was expanded to 1 600 000 tpa in July 1988. A tailings treatment plant to improve recoveries from harder gold bearing sulphide ores was built in December 1990. The development of an underground mine in 1991 meant that a source of sand for backfill was required. A sands plant to fulfil this requirement was commissioned during November 1991.As of June 1992 a total of 7 710 487 tonnes of ore have been treated through the New Celebration gold plant. Total gold production from inception of the new mine until June 1992 is 545 470 ounces obtained at an average recovery of 90.1 per cent from an average gold head grade of 2.4 g/t. The combined quoted ore reserves at the end of December 1991 was 14Mt grading 1.8 g/t gold

Microbial desulfurisation of coal has significant advantages over physicochemical desulfurisation processes since the former process selectively removes the inorganic sulfur compounds and heavy metals without significant carbon loss. The purpose of this study was to improve the desulfurisation yield of a coal sample from northeastern coalfields, Assam, India using microbial technique. The coal sample contained 2.13 per cent of total sulfur and 2.59 per cent of ash. Stirred tank reactors of 40 L capacity were operated in batch mode. Initially, the reactor was fed with 40 L of slurry containing ten per cent (w/v) coal, ten per cent (v/v) inoculum of mixed culture of mesophilic acidophiles, native to coal itself and the requisite amounts of constituents for 9K medium without added ferrous sulfate. The percolate of the reactor was then used to seed the medium for the next experiment. The purpose was to obtain a better adapted and more active biomass which would give a better desulfurisation yield for coal. Further studies were conducted in the bioreactor, fed with 40 L of slurry containing ten per cent (w/v) pulp density of coal, ten per cent inoculum (derived from previous studies) and the medium, supplemented with ferrous sulfate. Results showed an increased total desulfurisation yield of 43 per cent in the latter treatment in comparison to the previous one, where the desulfurisation yield was only 23 per cent. The findings also demonstrated the convenience of using inocula derived from coal, where 50 - 60 per cent of pyritic sulfur was removed, while chemical desulfurisation is of little significance with the majority of coal types. The ash content was also reduced to 1.74 per cent as the low pH of the process caused dissolution of a number of common minerals present in the coal.

It is good practice that the selection of survey parameters ensures that the signal to noise ratio is optimised, while minimising survey cost.Sampling considerations for any geophysical method include the size of the target, scale of observation, aliasing associated with station and line spacing, nature and extent of overburden, and the presentation of data.As a guide to survey design, the specifics are discussed for three geophysical techniques in common use in mineral exploration; these include the magnetic method, transient electromagnetics and induced polarisation.

Upon subduction, water is liberated from the sediments and the porous struc- ture of the oceanic crust and from de- hydration of minerals for redistribution and chemical reaction. A survey of pro- cesses which are likely to occur along the subducting plate reveals that water may well be basic in subduction induced gas generation, magma formation and ore deposition. In analogy to the industrial water gas process, reaction of water with car- bonaceous matter, in subducted sediments is likely to yield substantial volumes of hydrogen and carbon dioxide. While water and carbon dioxide appear to play a determining role in the development of differentiated magmas, hydrogen will react with metal sulfides and sulfur to form hydrogen sulfide which is essential in sulfide ore depo- sition. A survey of possible metal extrac- tion chemistry along subduction suggests a stepwise solubilization of metals from sediments and oceanic crust, and a poten tial accumulation of dissolved metals in zones of characteristic composition. The metal spectrum in ore deposits at near surface appears to reflect the com- position of the solution in the respec- tive subduction zone. A tendency for preferential solubi- lization of copper at subductidn level, from among the transition metals, an in- creasing generation of hydrogen sulfide in the sane direction and partition effects as well as sulfide precipitation characteristics lead to enrichment in copper and to its selective deposition in the direction towards the trench as observed in S. Latin America. A postscript deals with the formation of native copper.

Current mine ventilation systems have evolved from simple, limited energy, series or multi split layouts motivated by low suction, slow running, surface fans. Concentration of coal production from fewer working places and ventilation splits, and varying needs, hazards and challenges, however, have led to substan- tial changes. Modern ventilation systems, therefore, are more complex, sometimes more interdependent on others, more energy intensive, and are founded on the use of multiple airways and greater suction, higher speed surface ventilators and often booster fans. Intensi- fication of output has resulted also in higher gas emission rates, the wide adoption of fire- damp drainage, and sometimes in particular problems such as spontaneous firedamp emissions. Some coal mines are subject to spontaneous outbursts of coal and firedamp. These and related matters and current practices and developments are leading to discernible trends, potential advances, and further changes in Practice.

As part of the construction of the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop it was necessary to construct two 7 metre diameter tunnels, each 100 metres in length, by shield driven excavation through an alluvial valley at Elizabeth Street. The tunnels had a primary support of bolted precast reinforced concrete liner blocks and were excavated with the aid of compressed air. The work was undertaken by the Tunnelling Group of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works as nominated sub-contractor to John Holland (Constructions) Pty. Ltd. Gold production from The Granites - Tanami Goldfield during 1993 is expected to exceed 8 t, eclipsing that of the traditional Northern Territory gold mining districts of Tennant Creek and Pine Creek. This is the result of dedicated and successful exploration, and the consequent discovery of new orebodies such as those at Dead Bullock Soak.Following granting of access to regional exploration areas in 1988 and identification of favourable host rocks in the Schist Hills area, North Flinders Mines (NFM) began a methodical exploration program of detailed geological mapping, rock chip sampling, costeaning and various types of drilling. The first resource of 600 000 t of 3.3 g/t gold was announced in mid-1989. This has grown progressively with systematic exploration to the currently published resource inventory of 6.6 mT @ 5.4 g/t, (as at 31.12.92) contained in six separate orebodies within the Dead Bullock Soak Mineral Lease at Schist Hills.

A mineral systems approach was used to interpret precompetitive airborne mineral mapping geoscience data for iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) exploration in the Starra area, Eastern Succession, Mount Isa Inlier. Selected minerals were chosen to map possible source rocks/fluids as well as intersecting structural/fluid pathways that could have transported mineralising fluids into domains of contrasting rocks/fluids where there was potential for physicochemical gradients to precipitate metals. Ferric and ferrous iron contents and white mica abundance were useful mineral criteria to identify theMount Dore Granite of theWilliams-Naraku Batholith as a potential source of æoxidisedÆ fluids rich in Fe, K and potentially Cu-Au. The Mount Dore Shear Zone (MDSZ) intersects the western margin of this granite with the highest contents and changes in composition of the white mica are peripheral to this contact within the granite. This together, with the fact that the entire N-S length of the MDSZ in the study area (~16 km) is abundant in white mica are evidence of K-rich fluids had preferentially moved along this pathway. To the south, the MDSZ intersects a domain comprising massive ironstone bodies as well as numerous graphitic horizons. This interpreted æreducedÆ domain is well mapped using the æopaqueÆ mineral products, as well as by white mica, which is pervasively developed and extends 2 km either side of the MDSZ fault into the meta-sedimentary sequences. The chemistry of this white mica also changes progressively away from the MDSZ, becoming more Si-rich (longer wavelength) towards the contact with massive ironstone bodies in the west and the graphitic units in the east, both of which represent sites of known Cu-Au mineralisation. Beyond these contact zones of interpreted æoxidised fluidsÆ with reduced rocks/fluids, there is either a rapid change to Si-poor white mica and/or no white mica developed, ie major æchemicalÆ gradient change. These mineral mapping results provide evidence for a direct link between possible source rocks and sites of IOCG metal deposition as well as extending the associated alteration zonation which had previously been mapped/published at the metre-scale to the kilometre-scale. The Mount Kasi gold deposit in Vanua Levu represents an epithermal, high sulphur, gold-enargite system occurring within a volcanic caldera of Middle to Upper Miocene age. High level breccia pipes flare upward and form flat lying, near surface, mushroom shaped sheets parallel and near to the present land surface. The upper portions of the pipes contain explosion breccias which are capped by sandy siliceous sinter-like beds and are cut by alunite veins. Outlying intercalated scoriasceous lavas and breccia sheets show evidence of subsidence within a shallow basin. Detailed mapping of breccia types, intensity of silicification and the presence of multiple quartz veining and enargite abundance outlined blocks of more consistent gold mineralization within the breccias. This work has provided a model for mineralization which will aid future exploration and ore reserve estimations. A significant eluvial concentration of gold occurs in soils overlying the breccia sheet.

To extract uranium from low-grade, calcrete-hosted uranium (CHU) ore is challenging owing to the presence of carbonate and swelling clay gangue minerals that require an alkaline lixiviant to be used. Western Australia possesses ~75 000 U3O8 t in CHU resources. Improvements to alkaline leach extraction practices would improve the economic potential of these deposits.A column leach study of CHU ore was run for 105 days using an alkaline carbonate-bicarbonate lixiviant. The uranium content of the liquor plateaued after 75 days at ~275 mg U/L; the calculated maximum solution capacity was 800 mg U/L. Spiked peaks and troughs were seen in the data set beyond the 60th day, where concentrations ranged from 220 - 290 mg U/L, indicating possible cyclic uptake and loss of uranium from the solution.Pristine and leached ore samples were geochemically analysed and mineralogically characterised at high resolution using a field emission gun-electron probe micro-analyser (FEG-EPMA). Results showed that leached ore samples from the top of the column contained less carnotite than pristine ore. In contrast, leached ore samples from the column base contained regions with more carnotite than pristine ore, indicating precipitation. Three carnotite grain micro-structures were identified in the leached ore; fan-spherulite, granular and core-shell cubes, with evidence for multiple growth phases.Evidence of carnotite precipitation was seen at the edge of and in pore spaces within montmorillonite and dolomite grains. The point of zero charge of both minerals is lower than the pH of the lixiviant (pH 10.8), thus the mineral surfaces are negatively charged and would not attract UO2(CO3)34- ions out of solution. Similarly, the decrease in the uranium content of the lixiviant is not attributed to super-saturation, as this was unlikely to have been achieved. Toppling failure of a jointed rock slope was studied by using the distinct lattice spring model (DLSM). Compared with the classical discrete element model, the DLSM has the advantages of free calibration of micro-mechanical parameters and easy to represent discontinuities, and is more computationally efficient. In this work, the DLSM was used to investigate the toppling failure of jointed rock slopes. The numerical simulation was verified against experimental data from a centrifuge model test on a jointed rock slope. Both the horizontal deformations and failure pattern observed in the centrifuge test were reasonably reproduced using the DLSM. Then, the mechanism of the flexural toppling failure was studied numerically by using a parameter analysis. In line with mining operations throughout Australia, Western Mining Corporation Limiter' is striving to increase productivity by intro-ducing mechanized mining techniques wherever possible. Kambalda Nickel Operations' (K.N.O.) largest operating nickel mine, Long Shaft, is currently introducing mechanized cut and fill methods which must provide flexibility to cater for an orebody that variesconsiderably in width, both along the strike and up dip.This has resulted in modifications to the previous approach to primary level develop-ment, and intermediate stope development, and in the type of development and production equipment being employed. Electric-hydraulic diesel jumbos and diesel loaders have now been mated with conventional rail equipment and production airtrack machines are being utilized.The transition to mechanized methods is in its preliminary phase and is being monitored closely to ensure any productivity gains are not offset by a substantial drop in mine grade. The precise method ofmechanized mining has not been finalized and selective methods will be used, according to the ore width and ground conditions, which vary throughout the mine.

Structure is an important control in the localisation of gold mineralisation in epithermal systems. There has been, however, only limited investigation of the structural elements involved; such a study is currently directed at the gold deposits of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). Here, mineralised veining and brecciation ranges up to tens of metres in thickness. Dips of veins are mostly steep, but not vertical, and there is a significant number of low angle veins.The structural control of epithermal deposits may be considered on four scales. At the mega-tectonic scale, pre-volcanism fault patterns mostly relate to separation of the New Zealand micro-continent from Gondwana. The major structural controls on mineralisation at this scale, however, are associated with the volcanic arc processes responsible for the CVZ. Post-mineralisation faulting are linked to the Hauraki Rift and the Colville Ridge-Havre Trough system. Regional scale faults controlling the distribution of gold deposits are the product of these tectonic events; much of the faulting may relate to rifting and calderas, but further work is required to demonstrate this. Detailed study is also needed on vein systems at the prospect scale to validate models of brittle deformation responsible for such systems. Evidence that a variety of structural mechanisms dominated in different deposits is found at the vein scale, with Coromandel gold deposits being classified according to their different styles of vein-fill texture.
