Filters are used in water treatment and hydrometallurgical process plants for objectives such as generating a dry spadable solid, pumpable high density slurry or high purity filtrate. The priority objective of every polishing filter, sometimes also termed clarifying filters is high purity filtrate and these are found in many diverse industries and even different applications within the same industry.To generate a high purity filtrate, process designers have the choice of many different polishing filter products, but in reality very few polishing filters are based on fundamentally different filtering concepts.This paper reviews the technology merits of well-known and the more recently developed polishing filter products and aims to assist metallurgists and engineers with the selection of an appropriate polishing filtration technology for pregnant liquor filtration and other process applications, plus a guide to best practice.CITATION:Shipard, S, 2013. With the recent wider introduction of friction hoists of the Koepe type. for winding from depths of more than 3000 feet it has been found that failure by fatigue is the most common form of rope deterioration. Large numbers of wire breaks occur near the centre of the rope cross-section and it is difficult to detect these with certainty using the preferred d.c. magnetic test. For best results with conventional search coils their dimen- sions should be related to the typical wire break field pattern surrounding the longitudionally magnetised rope. The field of a broken wire was experimentally determined, using a Polish type MD6 Defectograph wire rope testing magnet and a short prepared length of rope with a movable simulated broken wire. The external field distortion perpendicular to the rope was measured by means of a gaussmeter and Hall probe. The advantages of this method are that terrestial magnetism and inherent rope "noise" have no effect on the results.

Ore reserves at the Kambalda Nickel Operations of Western Mining Corporation are estimated using the polygonal method for calculating areas of influence of drillholes. All raw assay and survey data are stored on one disk pack on the Company's CYBER 73 computer located in Perth, about 600 km from Kambalda. The initial step involving the computer is to search all assay data and calculate all potential ore-grade intersections. As the orebodies are thin, structurally complex and many are in close stratigraphic proximity, the selection of intersections which have the best grade over at least a minimum mining width involves complex logic. The orientation of an ore surface at each drill intersection point and a zone code are added to each intersection by the geologist from geological plans prepared for each ore surface. The orientation data together with downhole surveys enables the calculation of inter- section true widths and the zone code links each recalculated intersection to the appropriate ore surface.

We all live in professional silos û comfort zones, where we talk to like-minded people with the same training, experience and view of the world. We note in passing the existence of other disciplines, but they are tolerated rather than embraced. To the geologist, the metallurgist is a mad scientist conjuring gold out of some foul solution about which the less said the better. To the metallurgist, the geologist is a bearded, self-appointed sage who guesses what is under our feet by sniffing the air, and drives a Land Rover badly. As to the view of mining engineers held by both geologists and metallurgists, this is best left to the imagination. And of course we are all confused by the term æmetallurgistÆ. I am called a metallurgist though my skills are in mineral processing not metal processing, but I canÆt be called a mineralogist because that definition is already taken. *Please note that this is available as an extended abstract only*

The success of the Australian mining industry depends on the quality of its skills. High quality skills supported by a culture which demands success lead to innovations, good practices and prosperity. Average skills lead inevitably to mediocrity. Universities play an essential role in the development and use of skills but the crucial industry-university links have been subordinated to conventional academic interests in training mining and processing engineers. It is only in the area of post-graduate research degrees which are oriented towards the mineral industry that Australia can claim world leadership. Deficiencies are not due to lack of training resources, they are due to inadequate utilisation of the resources that are available. Australia can and should have the world's best mineral engineering school, with a branch in Asia where many of its customers are and close ties with South America where some of its production operations will be. Some steps which might be taken to achieve this are proposed.

Despite significant advances in the platform technologies that could form part of a system of mine automation, the goal of full automation in most underground mining applications remains distant. This is because the industry developed these platform technologies to achieve local improvements in safety, machine and labour productivity, and asset utilisation, rather than to work towards a goal of a complete system of automation for general application in underground mines. This paper reviews the history and current state of automation in the underground mining industry and uses lessons learnt from the automobile and general manufacturing industries to gain insight into the opportunities and pitfalls in the complex and uncertain path to automation of underground mines. It also evaluates the relevance of the current drivers of interest in the industry. From this, we hope to engender an attainable vision of automation in underground mining and determine the best development path, process and timeline to achieve this vision.

Late Palaeozoic and Late Mesozoic phases of widespread overprinting have obliterated most of the primary magnetization signature of the Tasman Fold Belt. Palaeomagnetic programs of a regional extent offer best prospects for identification and interpretation of such secondary magnetizations and for isolation of any remaining primary magnetization. In 1983 the BMR initiated a regionally oriented palaeomagnetic study of the Tasman Fold Belt to obtain palaeomagnetic constraints on the tectogenesis of the fold belt. Particular attention is being paid to the analysis of possible differential movements between suspect or- tectonostratigraphic terranes within the Tasman Fold Belt and the respect to cratonic Australia. Work has concentrated so far on the Cowra Trough-Molong High region of the Lachlan Fold Belt and the New England region. Pilot sampling has been carried out in the Gympie region. In addition Palaeozoic sequences are being studied from the Amadeus Basin and the Ngalia Basin to refine the palaeomagnetic reference frame of cratonic Australia.

This paper describes the planning mechanism and implementation of a progressive rehabilitation programme at Hunter Valley Mine in the Upper Hunter Valley of New South Wales. Hunter Valley Mine is a large open cut coal mine which produces approximately 7.0 million tonnes of coal (run of mine) annually for export. This production level involves the movement of some 60 million tonnes of waste and coal each year.The rehabilitation programme at Hunter Valley Mine has been developed to provide a combination of pasture, based on improved pasture species and timber belts to enhance the visual characteristics of the rehabilitated landform, whilst creating amenity in the form of shade for livestock.The operational philosophy for the rehabilitation programme is that of progressive rehabilitation. The best time to undertake rehabilitation is now.' As a result, planning for the rehabilitation programme is continuous, so that all site works are completed in time for vegetation establishment during the critical periods each year.

A mining joint venture presents a real management challenge to achieve harmony with the other participants in the successful development and operation of a mine. This can best be facilitated by a detailed agreement and guided by a set of joint venture principles which recognise the differences of the interests of the parties and seek to establish sound business and personal principles by which differences not anticipated in the agreement might be resolved. The major and minor co-venturers can and do present potential difficulties to one another. This paper, one of the pair in the joint venture panel discussion session, predominately presents the minor's viewpoint. Usually commercial matters such as project finance, areas of interest, divestment, pre-emptive rights and decision-making can be adequately covered in the agreement. However, when the parties disagree and have difficulty in resolving their differences, the joint venture principles should be used to advantage to resolve relationship difficulties.

Host-rock - wallrock major and trace element geochemistry associated with epithermal gold mineralisation in the Hauraki Goldfield of New Zealand is poorly documented, even though rock geochemistry is a recognised tool in exploration. Such responses assist in recognition of the regional scale imprint of fossil hydrothermal activity, and indicate targets for detailed evaluation within these alteration zones.Recent investigation of gold deposits in the Waihi (Gladstone), Golden Cross (Empire), Thames (Waiotahi) and Coromandel (Tokatea) areas indicate enrichments of Au, As and Sb in the andesitic wallrocks hosting mineralisation. Of the other elements examined, Si, K and Rb are enriched, and Na, Ca, and Sr are depleted at all deposits. These trends are best developed in the vicinity of veining. In deposits with clay alteration dominating (Waiotahi and Tokatea) there is also depletion of Mg, Mn, Zn and Cu. Ba and Cr are variably enriched or depleted within different styles of alteration. Base-metal enrichment in the wallrocks is not a feature of Hauraki deposits.

The evaluation of ore deposits consumes much effort, cost and time, hence research work must aim to minimize these inputs with no loss of accuracy. The present study is devoted to assess the optimum conditions and methods of calculations which give minimum costs of ore exploration. An area of (a x a) where "a" is the zone of influence of the semi-variogram, i.e. (2800 x 2800 square metres) located within the Abu Tartur plateau is the subject of the intensive study. The distances between boreholes are varied ie. a/4, a/6, a/8 and a/ 10 respectively. The average ore grade (G), thickness (t) and relative ore reserves (tG) are calculated by four methods. The results indicate that at a distance equal to a/5, the inverse distance squared method gives the best results. These parameters save about 50 percent of the cost of exploration with a map accuracy greater than 90 Percent.

Mining companies worldwide have an increasing interest in restoring indigenous ecosystems following mining. Low levels of plant nutrients and organic matter, pH extremes, heavy metals, physically challenging media, and difficult climatic conditions all hinder revegetation of steep rockdump slopes. Our techniques use colonising pioneer plants to accelerate natural soil development and plant succession processes on minesites that are difficult to revegetate with locally sourced plants by traditional techniques. Suitable treatments and pioneer species must first be identified for each rocktype. Field trials at the Stockton Coal Mine in Buller have shown that successful acceleration of moss and pioneer plant establishment is possible. Best plots showed a mean of 15 per cent moss cover and 3.3 per cent vascular cover after 12 months compared with 0.1 per cent and nil respectively for controls. Techniques have been extended to field-scale trials, using hydroseeders and dryblowers. These techniques show potential for practical land rehabilitation, whilst conserving local biodiversity.

"Geometallurgical variables often cause problems to conventional geostatistical workflows. There are many variables; some are compositional and some are non-additive. They often show: complex multivariate relationships undersampling relative to conventional grade variables unequal sampling; that is, all variables are not available at all data locations.A variety of approaches have been developed over the years, but geostatisticians remain mostly focused on modelling rock types and a few grade variables with an abundance of data. The problems are reviewed and a chained workflow is presented where appropriate techniques are employed in sequence to permit reliable spatial prediction of geometallurgical variables. The spatial models may be used to assess the value of additional data, for prediction of process performance, for improved mine planning and other optimisation tasks. The chained workflow will include data transformations such as ratios and normal scores that make the variables amenable to geostatistical modelling. Data imputation techniques to account for missing values are considered with special consideration to spatial correlation with the available data. Decorrelation techniques such as the principal components, min/max autocorrelation factors and projection pursuit multivariate transformation are employed to manage massively multivariate modelling. Full distribution modelling must be considered to avoid biases in the prediction of non-additive variables. The post-processing of geometallurgical models must be streamlined for robustness and efficiency. The precise workflow varies according to the specific purpose of the study. It has been said on many occasions that æthe future of the mining industry of Australia, and indeed the world, lies in the hands of the studentsÆ. As a student, this can be a daunting, yet very exciting, statement. If nothing else, it is a direct challenge to the student body of the mining industry to take responsibility for its direction æafter 2000Æ. However, for the students to embrace this challenge, some responsibility must be borne by the universities and the industry itself to provide some direction and encouragement. Perhaps, therefore, the real challenge is to find the right balance between students, industry and education to best prepare the students for a career in the mining industry. The future industry will demand students who are capable and willing to adapt to change and technology and able to exert the vision and leadership required to ensure the mining industry continues to thrive well into the next century.

As part of the response to the increased demand for products such as iron ore, coal and gold many resource companies have identified the need to develop strategies focused on attracting high demand professionals and retaining current employees in the business. Recent graduates are entering a time where they can expect high starting salaries, attractive benefits and lifestyle options. At the same time high work expectations and large demands on both personal and professional development will also be the norm. Some of the challenges faced may include high demands on performance, working with limited resources, long hours, and tackling unfamiliar areas of work with little guidance. However, managing your career and these challenges effectively can give you valuable experience in a short amount of time. By offering situations from my relatively short, yet active, career in the mining industry during these boom times I will raise some key points on how to best leverage your commodity and make the most of a bullish market.

Gold was discovered in the Bendigo area of Victoria in 1851 (Willman and Wilkinson, 1993), and all the early gold mining of any note involved washing (puddling) the gold out of the regolith or alluvium. The waste material from this process was a semi-fluid mixture of rock debris, soil and water, referred to as `sludge'. Puddling machines were gradually introduced to speed up the puddling process (Cole, 1994), and by 1855 an estimated 2000 machines were in the district (Anderson, 1978). In 1859 it was estimated that approximately 2 293 000 m3 of material was puddled annually by the machines on the eastern side of the goldfield, whose waste drained into Bendigo Creek and its tributary gullies. It was also estimated that after the gold was removed, approximately one-quarter of the residue/sludge consisted of the heavier, coarse-grained material which settled out fairly quickly, while the remainder, approximately 1 720 000 m3, was the fine-grained material which flowed downstream for some distance (VPP, 1859 - 60). From these figures it can be assumed that for the ten years during which this volume of puddling was maintained (1854 - 1864) over 5 700 000 m3 of gravels and sands and 17 200 000 m3 of fine-grained sludge had been discharged into and around Bendigo Creek. This was enough to cover an area of over 400 km2 to a depth of 5 cm. By 1859 the problems associated with the sheer volume of sludge being discharged were such that a Royal Commission was appointed to `Enquire into the Best Method of Removing the Sludge from the Gold Fields' (VPP, 1859 - 60). The goldfields referred to were those in the Bendigo area around the township of Sandhurst (now known as Bendigo). The Report of the Commission (VPP, 1859 - 60) stated that: `... inspection of the country bordering upon the course of the Bendigo Creek, to a distance of about fifty miles from Sandhurst . . . ' had revealed that the sludge had ' . . . filled up watercourses and flooded pasture lands . . . '. It also noted that ' . . . even on the plains, thirty or forty miles away from Sandhurst, where the sludge flows thin, and is relieved from its heavier particles, we found it baked into a perfect concrete, and in thicknesses varying up to two feet or more . . . '. The italics were used for emphasis in the original text. As it was considered unlikely that the physical evidence for such widespread inundation would have disappeared completely over the intervening 130 or so years, a project was initiated to locate any evidence of the inundation in the current landscape. If such evidence were to be found, then an estimate could be made of both its extent and its effects on the topography, drainage, and land-use of the inundated area. Extensive field work has determined that over 700 km2 to the north of Bendigo was inundated by the sludge. The area has not been uniformly covered, but has occasional `inliers' which have obviously escaped inundation by being slightly higher than the surrounding areas. Today the sludge is readily identified as a very fine-grained, hard-setting, concrete-like `capping' overlying a well-developed, well-structured, pedal horizon, or in some instances, the gravels and sands of a creek bed. The thickness of the sludge capping varies between a few centimetres and three metres (Peterson, 1996). Following the Busang fiasco, more detailed guidelines were appended to the latest revision of the JORC Code released in September 1999 (JORC, 1999). Although the definitions and terminology essentially remained unchanged, the additional information in the guidelines has highlighted a number of issues for consideration by geologists undertaking computer-based resource estimations. The three main issues are:Data Integrity û details such as drilling and logging techniques, sampling procedures, assay tests, site visits, data recording and aggregation methods need to be considered. Geological Interpretation û is the Competent Person applying the appropriate software interpretation to the deposit in accordance with the regional setting. Are the correct computer-based tools being applied and are they producing the desired result (without compromise) to the satisfaction of the Competent Person? Modelling Technique û the importance of the relevant experience of the Competent Person not only in regard to the geology, but also with respect to the modelling algorithms and resource calculation methods of the computer software system involved. At the end of the day, it is essential that the Competent Person undertake a reality check on the resource estimation itself. They should also check that the borehole spacing is in accordance with the level of continuity for each critical parameter (such as structure, grade, impurities, etc) for which the resources are categorised.

Hydraulic backfill is generally retained in stopes using permeable barricades. Mitchell et al (1975), Mitchell (1992) and Grice (1989) have shown that under normal drainage conditions, barricades experience low levels of loading. Cowling et al (1988) have also shown that barricades are susceptible to piping failures if excess water has ponded on the upper backfill surface and if leakage of backfill from the barricades has occurred. During 1997, six hydraulic backfill barricades failed in four different Australian mines. Fortunately, in each case, the quantity of backfill slurry released was small, and no injuries to personnel nor damage occurred. Detailed investigation of two of the incidents showed that the primary cause of failure could be attributed to the delivery of excess quantities of transport water from the low-density slurry. For each of the incidents investigated there was evidence of the development of piping failures, which resulted in hydrostatic loading conditions on the barricades from the ponded water on the upper backfill surface. The circular failure surfaces in the barricades were characteristic of the application of point loading conditions. This paper discusses the circumstances that led to these incidents and analyses the modes of failure. The standards for the safe operating of hydraulic backfill systems are reviewed along with requirements for ongoing management and control. The design requirements of barricade construction are analysed and some appropriate guidelines introduced.

The George Fisher deposit is a significant sediment hosted silver-leadzinc resource located 2 km north of the Hilton Mine in NW Queensland. The George Fisher feasibility project involved the completion of underground and surface drilling programs to delineate Measured and Indicated Resource which could be converted to an Ore Reserve through mining and commercial studies. The geological information which was collected and used for the feasibility study included a major program of diamond drilling, predominantly from underground sites, but with some drilling also completed from surface. All drillcore was geologically and geotechnically logged, sampled and assayed. Data was also collected from underground cross-cut and drive development which was mapped for rocktype, ore distribution, structure and geotechnical condition. This new geological data, generated during the Pre-Feasibility and Feasibility stages, was combined with results of all previous drilling campaigns in the George Fisher area to produce a comprehensive database on which geological modelling and Resource estimation could be based. To allow fast and accurate collection and utilisation of data from the drilling program, digital collection processes were used where possible. This resulted in rapid data entry into the project database, significantly enhanced data quality, 100 per cent data ownership within the project team and increased productivity levels. Processes used during the project data collection program are described, lessons learned are related and suggestions for ænext timeÆ are listed using the benefit of hindsight.
