Fox perhaps one hundred years scientists have been engaged in attempts at devising a satisfactory method of classification of coal. During this time many charts, tables and graphs have been proposed, some of which have had considerable merit, but no one system has been found to be applicable to all ranks of coal, nor has any one system received general acceptance. In many of the proposals, water eliminated between room temperature and 105° C. has been regarded as extraneous matter and calculations have been made to the air-dry or water-free basis. Such methods of. calculation do not lend themselves to satisfactory grouping of the high-moisture coals.1,2 A consideration not only of the properties of the high-moisture coals and their behavior on drying but of the generally accepted ideas of the coalification process and the role of water in this process indicates that water is an essential constituent of all coals and therefore should not be neglected. For example, in such low-rank coals as the lignites of the Northern Great Plains' deposits the inherent moisture of the lignite as mined plays a very important part in the physical properties thereof. Freshly mined lignite contains upwards of 30 per cent water and is extremely tough and resistant to shock. Upon exposure to the atmosphere, the lump loses part of its moisture and checks and splits, leaving a friable and broken up residue. So far as we have been able to determine, water is the only thing lost in this process and we are forced to the conclusion that moisture plays an extremely important part in the structural properties of the original lignite. With reference to the coalification process, Mack and Hulett3 pointed out in 1917 the important part that water played therein. They observed that water cannot be removed from peat or coal by pressure alone, but only as the result of chemical reaction, and suggested that peat in its early stages may be largely a hydrosol. Slow chemical changes occur over a long period of time until finally the mass becomes more largely a hydrogel. These views are substantiated to some extent by the experi-

Advances in instrumentation now make it possible to measure accurately flaw of such difficult-to-mea-sure liquids as mining slurries. A mass flowmeter, which introduces no restrictions in the line, will measure the mass flow of slurry equal to the volume flow times the mms/unit volume. In the mass flowmeter system a volume flow measurement is electrically multiplied by a density measurement in order to give mass flow. Fig. 1 shows a typical mass flow measuring system. The volume flow is measured by a magnetic flowmeter and the density is measured by a gamma gauge cell, neither of which have any restrictions in the line. Consequently, there is no clogging and no more loss of head than there would be in a similm length of standard pipe. None of the parts extend into the flowing stream and there are no moving parts in the measuring elements. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION OF THE VOLUME FLOW TRANSMITTER The magnetic flowmeter, which is used for the volume measurement, operates on the principle of a generator (Fig. 2). This principle states that when a moving conductor cuts lines of force in a magnetic field, a voltage is induced in it. Moreover, if the dimensions of the conductor remain constant, then the induced voltage is directly proportional to the velocity of the conductor. Since the voltage is strictly a function of flow velocity, the transmitter output can in no way be influenced by such factors as temperature, viscosity, turbulence, or conductivity. The linear output is detected by flush mounted electrodes (as shown) and transmitted to a potentiometer flow receiver. Magnetic Meter Construction: The metering tube is constructed of nonmagnetic stainless steel. (See Fig. 3.) To prevent shortcircuiting of the generated voltage, the tubes are lined with a suitable liner, depending upon the corrosive, erosive or other properties of the liquid or slurry to be measured. A uniform magnetic field is produced by two saddle-shaped coils of insulated copper wire. A laminated iron core focuses the magnetic field at a 90' angle to the flowing liquid. The voltage generated by a flow of liquid through the magnetic field is detected by two point electrodes mounted flush with the inner wall of the metering tube, 180' apart. Electrodes are made of Type-316 stainless steel or other material suitable to the application . Volume Flowmeter Operation: The millivolt output of the metering transmitter is transmitted to a potentiometer-type receiver (Fig. 4). The self-balancing, self-standardizing receiver has a drive unit for circuit rebalancing. The measurement change imposes an unbalanced input on the twin windings of the drive unit. The resulting unequal pull on a segmental rotor provides the motion which drives a pen, while simultaneously and steplessly repositioning a rebalancing element. Changes in conductivity have no effect on the accuracy of the measurement or the calibration of the instrument. The minimum conductivity values are determined by the length of the transmission cable and the size of the transmitter. They can be as low as five micro mhos, since there is such a small load on the electrodes. Because the meter electrically averages all of the incremental velocities in an irregular flow profile, it is ideally suited for turbulent flow and suspended solids. ONE who attempts to collect and classify equilibrium data from various iron-alloy systems is soon struck with the absence of any quantitative theory that can serve as a general background against which to compare and contrast results from different systems, at different temperatures, and with different concentrations. It is not necessary to wait for a perfect theory; investigation of divergences of theory from observation may prove of great value in acquiring understanding of the subject. For example, one has only to think of Raoult's law as applied to aqueous solutions. The equations developed by Zener1 represent an effort to provide such a quantitative theoretical background, and it is therefore desirable to subject this theory to such tests as can be applied. The present article is intended to be an application of available tests, and may thus be considered as a supplement to Zener's paper. It is assumed that this paper is available to the reader. The equations make it possible to calculate the effect on the equilibrium concentration of one alloying element due to the presence of one or more other elements. In particular they are intended to give, for alloy steels, the carbon concentrations in alpha and gamma phases in equilibrium with each other, and in gamma in equilibrium with cementite. They may, however, be modified for use for carbon-free alloys. A summary is given later of the equations used in analyzing the data in this paper, and the symbols are there defined. About 125 papers have been examined for experimental data suitable for this investigation. An effort was made to look up all available reports of ternary systems including iron and carbon, as well as similar systems of higher order. Supplementary material was also obtained from a number of binary systems. A few noncarbon ternary systems were also found to which these methods could be applied. A comparatively small proportion of the papers read provided usable material. In many systems the number of quantitative observations made in the iron-rich region is extremely small, and the smoothed curves to be found in most published phase diagrams are entirely useless for quantitative treatment. This opinion is confirmed by the authors of the series on Alloys of Iron Research, whose remarks show clearly that they have no illusions as to the accuracy of many diagrams that they present. A further difficulty arises from the fact that these equations apply only to rather low percentages of alloying elements. The result is that at the lowest concentrations, where the best agreement might be hoped for, the errors of observation become relatively very large. The experimental difficulties in measurements of this kind of equilibrium are, of course, an old story.

Structural similarities between the E, X, and iron carbides are illustrated. Experimental evidence regarding phase transformations occurring during ternpering reactions in finely divided carbides, thin-film carbides, and carbides which occur in steels is considered and possible mechanisms for the E — x and x — 9 transformations proposed. HOFER1 has shown that within the appropriate temperature ranges carbon monoxide will react with finely divided a iron to form either iron carbide or x iron carbide. He has shown that at an elevated temperature the E iron carbide will transform to the x iron carbide (Hagg carbide) which, upon further elevation of temperature, will transform to 9 iron carbide (cementite). Jack,2,3 using X-ray diffraction methods, has observed that during the tempering reactions occurring in steel the E iron carbide formed in the first stage of tempering passes into two-dimensional platelets of 0 iron carbide during the second stage of tempering. The three-dimensional form of the 0 carbide is formed during the third stage of tempering. Jack suggested2 that the two-dimensional platelets of 0 carbide could be related to the faulted x iron carbide. Okada and Arata4 investigated a Swedish steel containing 1.05 wt pct C and approximately 1.0 wt pct Mn using permeability measurements at low field strength. A Curie point of 360°C was observed in the quenched steel, which indicated the presence of E iron carbide. On tempering at 400°C the specimen developed a Curie point at 230°C, indicating the presence of x iron carbide, and on tempering at 700°C the specimen developed a Curie point at 190°C which was assigned to 0 iron carbide. The carbides were extracted electro-lytically and the use of X-ray diffraction techniques4r5 indicated the carbide with a Curie point of 230°C to be x iron carbide. The Curie points of the carbides are 10 to 22°C lower than the accepted values which is probably due to the presence of manganese in the carbides, since it has often been observed (e.g., Ref, 6) that a partial substitution of manganese for iron in cementite will lower the Curie point of this carbide. Hofer' summarizes additional evidence of the tempering reactions in steel in which E iron carbide, formed during the first stage of tempering, transforms to x iron carbide during the second stage of tempering. During the third stage of tempering, the x carbide disappears as the 0 carbide is formed. By carburizing thin iron films in a CO gas stream, ~a~akura' has been able to produce the E, X, and 0 iron carbides. He found that below 250°C the E iron carbide was formed; between 250" and 350°C the x iron carbide was formed and above 350°C the 0 iron carbide was formed. He has shown that the E iron carbide transforms to form x iron carbide at 380" to 400°C and that the x ir°n carbide transforms to form the 0 iron carbide at approximately 550" C; both of these phase transformations are irreversible. Hofer' presents a review of evidence to show that the sequence of reactions occurring during tempering processes subsequent to the formation of E iron carbide formed by the direct carburization of finely divided a iron is the same as the sequence of reactions which occur during the tempering processes subsequent to the formation of E iron carbide in steel during the first stage of tempering. It is evident from Nagakura's work that identical tempering reactions are found in thin films of iron which have been carburized to form iron carbide. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the structural similarities between the E, X, and 0 carbides and to suggest a possible mechanism by which regions of the E carbide, formed during the first stage of tempering, may transform to the x carbide during the second stage of tempering. For the finely divided or thin film carbides a mechanism will be proposed for the transformation of the x carbide to the 0 carbide during the third stage of tempering, although it will be suggested that there is evidence that such a transformation may not occur in steels. STRUCTURAL DATA OF THE E, X, AND 0 IRON CARBIDES € Iron Carbide. It is evident from X-ray diffractions and electron diffraction', investigations that the metal atoms in the E iron carbide form an hcp structure with lattice constants ah = 2.752A, ch = 4.3534, using electron diffraction, reports the lattice paramet$rs of the superlattice cell to be a = 4.767A, c = 4.354, c/a = 0.9134. He finds that the carbon atoms occupy the octahedral voids in the metal atom structure so as to form a hexagonal stacking sequence with its basal plane parallel to that of the metal atoms. Considerable long-range disorder occurs in the positioning of the carbon atoms, however, which is in agreement with the possible range of composition Fe2C-Fe3C discussed by Hofer.' Barton and ale" have made X-ray diffraction measurements on a sample of E iron carbide extracted from a catalyst in an organic process. Although there were few reflections recorded on the obtained X-ray powder diffraction pattern, they have proposed that the structure could belong to one of the three possible space groups p3m1, P63/mmc, or Pbcn if one assumed the composition to be Fe2C. Nagakura, using electron diffraction data, suggests a space group of P 6322 for a specimen of c iron carbide of apparent composition Fez.&. x Iron Carbide. Biological as well as geological research has made very successful use of the qualities that the physicists have detected in radioactive substances. Outstanding examples for the vast new fields opened in this part of the border-land between the disciplines of geology and physics are the "radio thermal geology" [July, 1909, see 1 of "References" at end of paper] and all that is connected with the use of the radioactive disintegration clock for the age-determination of rocks and minerals [2]. In structural geology, not unlike to recent bi-ological uses of radioactive material, their "tracer" properties were helpful. Changes in Radon concentra-tion in soil-air, especially accumulations, led to hidden crevices and fault-zones. High contents of Radon in spring-water gave clues as to the types of rocks they had flowed through [3, 4). One specific application of the small admixtures of radioactive material, however, has only lately found some atten-tion and that is their use in linking beds of sedi-mentary strata otherwise only poorly identified be-cause of the lack of fossils or other characteristic properties. To be useful for this purpose, two con-ditions have to be fulfilled: (1) The amount of radioactive material per unit-weight of rock in a given horizon should be uniform over a large area; (2) this same amount should change fairly rapidly in the vertical succession of layers.

INTRODUCTION This discusses some of the economic risks and uncertainties which face any company investing in new mineral ventures. These differ mainly in degree rather than kind from other large capital intensive projects, except that economic risks are compounded with technical risks. Mines face a wide variety of physical risks, and in addition the ore reserves may not prove as ample, nor as amenable to treatment as the feasibility studies indicate. On the economic front, mineral projects are subject to risks of fluctuating prices and sales volumes, no matter where they are located, or how they are financed. Typically, they are heavy users of capital compared with their owners' internally generated funds. Long term debt of various types is still the favoured form of finance. A project's currencies and cost often differ from each other and from those of the parent company. Facing up to the various risks associated with fluctuating and uncertain revenues, interest rates and exchange rates are amongst the hardest tasks for natural resource companies. ATTITUDES TO THE MINING INDUSTRY Some have questioned whether the game itself is now worth playing. They have argued that the mining industry's mediocre rewards in the past decade have been insufficient, compared with the risks involved. They can see no prospect of dramatic improvement in the next decade. Demand is highly cyclical and tends to grow less rapidly than economic activity, as a whole. Barriers to entry are low in most mineral markets, but impediments to exit can be substantial. Exit is especially problematic in those minerals where there are large state shareholdings and/or where less developed countries are major producers. The consequence is claimed to be an endemic tendency to excess capacity, and prices barely adequate to cover marginal cash costs. Many of the petroleum companies that moved into mining with such high expectations in the late 1970s have retreated, often bearing the scars of heavy losses. Individual shareholders, taken collectively, place low valuations on their investments in mining companies. The price/earnings ratios of the major mineral producing companies are low compared with their historical averages and with those of other industries. This paper is the nineteenth of a series from the Aluminum Research Laboratories, presenting the results of the investigations of equilibrium relations in aluminum-base alloys made from electrolytically refined aluminum. In previous papers equilibrium relations have been determined and correlated for 12 binary systems. Equilibrium relations have also been determined for portions of the aluminum corners of three ternary systems (aluminum-iron-silicon, aluminum-magnesium-silicon and aluminum-copper-magnesium). The object of the present paper and those to follow is to increase our knowledge of the aluminum corner of the more important ternary systems. In 1926 Dix and Keith † suggested a new method for designating the phases encountered in alloy systems. The system has been used to a very limited extentl,2,3 The system has since been slightly modified and will be used in this and future papers. In the system as modified, a phase is designated by placing in parentheses the chemical symbols of the elements essential to the formation of that phase. The symbols in the parentheses are separated by dashes in order to clearly distinguish them from a chemical formula. Elements that are not necessary to the formation of the phase in question, but which may be present in solid solution, are not indicated in the designation. If two or more phases would have the same designation according to these rules, they are distinguished by prefixing Greek letters, and are definitely identified by X-ray diffraction patterns. Previous Investigations The solid solubility of magnesium in aluminum has been well established by the work of Dix and Keller4, Schmid and Siebe15, and Saldau and Sergeev6. There is no agreement as to the composition of the magnesium constituents at the aluminum end of the binary aluminum-magnesium system. Hanson and Gayler7 report Mg2Al3; Boyer8 found that the alloy

Charles T. Holland (Head, Dept. of Mining Engineeri*, Virginia Polytechnical Inst., Blacksburg, Va.) Mr. Wuerker has presented a very interesting discussion of the use of triaxial test methods for investigating the strength properties of rocks. Such methods, no doubt, eventually will develop considerable information of interest to those concerned with the design of mine layouts, particularly in the field of pillar design. From his discussion of my recent article, "Cause and Occurrence of Coal Mine Bumps" (Holland Mining Engineering 1958, p. 933-1002), it is evident that in one place at least I did not make my meaning clear to him and perhaps others. To clear the matter up I think it best to quote from the article, somewhat more fully than did Mr. Wuerker, as follows: "4) In actual operations — because rocksare not perfectly elastic, homogeneous, nor isotropic and because local yield does occur — the maximum stress as demonstrated by Phillips (Ref. 22, pp. 64, 65) and indicated by much experience in mining, does not occur at the walls of the opening but at a short distance inside the pillar. Furthermore, the maximum stress does not reach as great a value as theoretical considerations and laboratory experimental methods indicate.* Actual distance inside the pillar, measured from the wall, at which the maximum stress exists, has not been determined. Observations in many mines, however, indicate that this distance could have a mini-value of one to six or eight times the bed thickness and that it is probably affected by width and height of the opening, depth of cover, and relative values of the elasticity and plasticity of materials comprising the roof, floor, and coal seam. The actual value of the stress produced probably lies between the theoretical maximum and the average stress concentration that would be produced if the weight of the strata above the unsupported opening were evenly distributed over the pillars for a distance equal to the opening width." The footnote reference in the above quotation referred to the following: "*For example, the Pocahontas No. 4 coal bed in southern West Virginia is mined under cover up to 1800 ft thick. Development openings are driven 18 to 20 ft wide, and the bed is about 6 ft thick. According to the work of Panek, the tangential wall stress at mid-bed height under these conditions would reach values between 4000 and 5000 psi. Actual tests of 3-in. cubes of this coal show its compressive strength would be much less than this, perhaps as low as 400 psi. Yet the pillars usually show no evidence of failure in these headings. In this same bed at a depth of 800 ft, the author has seen an opening 225 ft between supports lying between two old groves approximately 1100 ft apart. According to the theoretical considerations, the stress in the pillar walls would have been about 18,000 psi, yet the pillar showed little or no evidence of weight. In view of these observations, it is clear that the wall stress does not attain the maximum values indicated by theory." (Underlining added to original wording.) By referring to Fig. 2A of my paper it will be noted that theoretically the maximum pillar stress would occur at the pillar wall, i.e., at the passageway surface of the pillar. Obviously this cannot be correct in the cases of stress ranging from 4000 to 18000 psi since the coal at the surface of the pillar is under no constraint and cannot have a strength much greater than 400 or 500 psi. Hence, my conclusion that the maximum stress does not occur at the wall but back in the pillar some distance from the wall. Since these stresses are pushed back in the pillar from the wall, it is also obvious that the loads transferred to the pillar from the opening will be spread over a greater area and hence Pillar stresses will not rise to the values postulated by theory and photoelastic experiment. Further since to visual inspection the coal along the pillar wall did not appear to be failed the conclusion was reached that the stress shift was caused by local elastic or plastic yield and by difference in the elastic modulus of the rocks composing the mine floor, mine roof, and coal bed. Later on under the heading "Strength of Mine Pillars" (pages 1000-1002) the effects of constraint is briefly described. Also a formula taking into account constraint is developed relating pillar strength to the uniaxial strength of coal and the L/T ratio of the pillar. Since my paper was written, reports of experiments conducted in South Africa (Denkhaus, et. al., 1959), in Sweden (Hast 19581, and in Canada (McInnes, et.al., 1959) reveal that the conclusion expressed relative to the existence of a low stress area existing around the edges of pillars and solid faces as described above is generally correct. But it seems possible that where the wall stress developed is less than the unconfined strength of the rock composing the pillar and where the roof, floor, and pillar

A comprehensive report on extensive experimentation in degasification of the Pittsburgh Coal seam is presented. Detailed accounts of the procedures and results are given for permeability tests, vertical bore hole tests, measurement of gas flow from sealed drainage areas, horizontal rib hole tests, and water infusion tests. The removal of methane gas from coal seams in advance of mining is not a new idea with mining men—much attention has been given to the possibility for many years. In other parts of the world, a principal concern has been in the recovery and utilization of the gas and a number of successful projects have been developed in Europe and elsewhere. In this country, the principal motivation has been related to the safety aspect with some possible side benefits concerning costs and efficiency in mining as secondary objectives. To date, experimental work in this country has been largely or entirely exploratory to determine bed characteristics with respect to the liberation of combustible gases to investigate or establish the possibility of degasification in advance of mining and as an aid in projecting mine ventilation systems to provide for safe, effective and economical handling of combustible gases liberated during mining. With these objectives in mind, the School of Mines and Engineering Experiment Station at West Virginia University, in cooperation with the Christopher Coal Co. of Osage, W. Va., initiated some experimental work in May 1952 and the project has been more or less continuous since that time. The work has been centered entirely in mines of the cooperating company in Monongalia County, W. Va., and Greene County, Pa. LOCATION AND GENERAL CONDITIONS OF THE AREA The principal mining in the area involved is in the Pittsburgh coal seam which lies at the bottom of the Monongahela series of the Pennsylvanian. The Pittsburgh coal in the area is generally uniform in its structure and physical characteristics. The bed thickness averages about 7 to 8 ft and the coal has a characteristic blocky structure as the result of pronounced face cleats and definite, but somewhat less pronounced, butt cleavage. It is a medium volatile coal, averaging about 37 pct, and is marketed principally as a steam fuel and for metallurgical purposes. The Pittsburgh coal outcrops along the Monongahela River and dips gradually, but not uniformly, slightly north of west (about N75°W). The westward extensions of the bed, from the areas contiguous to the Monongahela River which have been heavily mined, constitute the principal reserves and are all well below drainage with the depth of cover increasing with the distance from the river. In general, with deeper cover, it may be expected that methane liberation will be more of a problem in future mining as compared to areas mined previously; therein lies the interest in possible de-gasification in advance of mining. Fig. 1 shows the Pittsburgh coal area in the vicinity of Morgantown in Monongalia County, W. Va., and Greene County, Pa., in which the experimental work discussed is located. Fig. 2 shows the contours on the Pittsburgh coal in the test area. It will be noted that the first two bore holes for the experiments were at the edge of a bench or terrace with considerable change in the gradient in the immediate vicinity of the test holes and that the same general condition applies to later test areas. Mining is intensively mechanized in the area and in the mines involved in the experimental work with corresponding rapid advance of working faces a typical characteristic. The uranium industry is booming. In Texas alone, there are about 22 different companies with active exploration programs. Twelve solution mines have been permitted; three surface mines have been authorized; and two mills are currently in operation. However, the industry also has a problem, and that is the disposal of radioactive wastes. Over the past several years, stories concerning nuclear wastes have appeared frequently in the news. One of the most frequently cited cases occurred in Grand Junction, Colorado. In 1966, after ten years of investigations, the U. S. Public Health Service (PHS) discovered that tailings from a uranium mill were being used as fill material and aggregate for local construction purposes. It was estimated that between 150,000 and 200,000 tons of material had been removed and used under streets, driveways, swimming pools, and sewer lines. In addition, tailings had been used under concrete slabs and around foundations of occupiable structures. Further studies prompted the Surgeon General to warn that the risk of leukemia and lung cancer could be doubled at the measured radiation levels. More recently, the L. B. Foster Company discovered that its building site in Washington, West Virginia, was radioactive. While digging a foundation, the ground erupted and a ball of fire 30 feet high shot out. Evidently, the dirt was laced with radioactive thorium and zirconium, a potentially explosive mixture contained in a Nigerian sand which had been used by the previous site owners in the manufacture of nuclear fuel rods. Just this month we have read about legal suits to stop exploration for a nuclear waste disposal site in Randall County, Texas. The U. S. Department of Energy is trying to locate a deep underground nuclear waste depository for final burial of over 76 million gallons of high-level wastes. The problem is acute, the wastes are accumulating at a rate of about 300,000 gallons per year. Nor do these numbers include the spent fuel elements from nuclear power plants that are in temporary storage facilities. Fortunately, public awareness of these and other related issues is high. Unfortunately, the differences in the waste products from the nuclear fuel cycle are not always apparent to the general public. There are two distinct types of radioactive wastes: "high-level", which consist of spent fuel or wastes from the reprocessing of spent fuel; and "low-level", which, in general, are by-product wastes. There are numerous non-technical definitions that can be applied to help the layman differentiate between high-level and low-level wastes. For this latter purpose, it is best to think of them in terms of what we can see and feel. In general, high-level wastes are physically hot and can cause acute radiation sickness in a short period of time. Low-level wastes are not hot, but may cause chronic health effects after long exposure. The wastes which we are concerned with in the uranium mining and milling industry are low-level wastes. As recently as ten years ago, there were very few controls or regulations governing tailings disposal methods. At the same time, mine reclamation was not enforced through either state or Federal laws and the long-term viability of abandoned tailings ponds was not assured. The regulatory climate has changed significantly in the last decade, however. The low-level radioactive wastes generated by uranium mining and milling are generally contained in a tailings pond. Approximately 85-97% of the total radioactivity contained in uranium ore is present in the mill waste that goes to such tailings ponds. The isotope Radium-226 is probably the most potentially harmful radioactive parameter in the ponds. Radium emits gamma radiation and is also an alpha particle emitter. Because gamma radiation is very penetrating, it presents a potential health problem when a source is located external to the body. Gamma radiation will go through the body, causing damage to each cell encountered on the way. Although alpha particles have very little penetration capability, they can cause extensive cell damage. For this reason, alpha particles are a problem after inhalation or ingestion. Radium creates a health hazard by both of these mechanisms. Radium decays to radon gas which can be inhaled and serve as an alpha particle emitter. Additionally, radium is very soluble and readily enters the natural hydrologic cycle if allowed to leach from a tailings pond. With a half-life of 1620 years, radium has plenty of time to be taken into the food chain and end up in our bodies, emitting alpha particles. Because the potential health problems are better understood today than ten years ago, and because the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has developed increasingly stringent government regulations, the uranium mining industry applies a high level of technology to the disposal of nuclear wastes. In most cases, low-level radioactive wastes are disposed of at or near the site where they are produced. There are six commercial burial grounds for low-level wastes, but it would not be economical to ship all mine or milling wastes to these sites. Photoelectronic radiation detectors may be conveniently classified as homogeneous intrinsic, homogeneom extrinsic, or junction type. Highly photosensitive homogeneous intrinsic photodetectors may be prepared from a number of different II-VI, III-V, or IV materials. Such materials require the presence of specific imperfections that can act as sensitizing centers to provide long majority carrier lifetime. Homogeneous extrinsic photodetectors are of interest primarity for infrared detection, and consist principully of germaniuim and silicon with suitable inpurities. A vaviety of junction photodetectors exist, with silicon us the most common material for them all. The following extrema in performance are found: 1) highest photoconductivity gain in homogeneous intrinsic photodetectors; 2) smallest response time (highest frequency response) in p-i-n junctions; 3) largest gain-bandwidth product in avalanche diodes. ALTHOUGH the total number of materials exhibiting photoconductivity effects is very large, only a relatively few of these have appropriate properties for a practical photoelectronic radiation detector. In fact if one surveys the commercial detectors currently available, one finds that the field is dominated by some ten or fewer materials. These are summarized in Table 1 in terms of the other important variable in detector fabrication, the structure of the material, i.e., whether the material is used as a single crystal or in polycrystalline form, and whether the material is used as a homogeneous detector or whether the detector depends upon the existence of a junction or barrier in the material. The principal wavelength range for each type of material is also shown, together with an indication of the utilization of intrinsic or extrinsic excitation. For the purposes of the present comparison of various detectors, it will be convenient to discuss two main topics: homogeneous photodetectors and junction photodetectors. The performance of a photoelectronic radiation detector is measured in terms of two parameters: the photoconductivity gain, and the response time of the detector. A convenient figure-of-merit is given by the ratio of gain to response time, often called the gain-bandwidth product. The photoconductivity gain is a device parameter since it varies in many cases with the applied voltage and the detector geometry, and should be distinguished from the actual photosensitivity of the material involved. This photosensitivity can be conveniently given as the product of free carrier lifetime and mobility in the material. The photoconductivity gain is defined as the number of charge carriers which pass between the electrodes per second for each photon absorbed per second, where G is the photoconductivity gain, is the pho-tocurrent in amperes, e is the electronic charge in coulombs, and F is the total number of electron-hole pairs created in the photo conductor per second by the absorption of light. The gain may also be expressed as the ratio of the lifetime of a free carrier to the transit time for that carrier, i.e., the time required for the carrier to move between the electrodes. For a material in which one-carrier conductivity dominates, where T is the lifetime of a free carrier, ttr is the transit time for this carrier, p is the carrier mobil-ity, V is the applied voltage, and L is the electrode spacing. From Eq. [2] it follows that the photoconductivity gain is proportional to the photosensitivity of the material (tP), the proportionality constant being The photosensitivity of a material, and hence the photoconductivity gain of a device utilizing the material, depends on the lifetime of the free carriers as a critical parameter. In a homogeneous material this lifetime is determined by the nature of imperfections in the material, and in an inhomogeneous material the lifetime is determined by the specific junction structure. The speed of response, the other basic photodetec-tor parameter, is determined by factors quite similar to those important for photoconductivity gain. Imperfections are of primary importance in homogeneous materials, and the structure of the junction is a determining factor in junction devices. For infrared detectors it has become common to define another quantity designed to indicate directly how effective the detector is in distinguishing between a small photoconductivity signal and random noise due to the detector and its environment. With flow of non-Newtonian fluids in porous media, effective viscosities are needed for use in the Darcy equation. These viscosities depend on the rock parameters and flowing conditions. In this investigation, rheological and flow results were correlated to develop an expression for calculating effective viscosities. Surfactant-stabilized dispersions of water in hydrocarbon were used with consolidated sandstone cores of different permeabilities. The average shear rate in a core was related to the permeability and porosity of the core and the frontal velocity through the core. By using the correlation obtained for determining effective viscosity, experimental and theoretical values were compared for each fluid system by determining average and maximum errors. For the fluid system showing the largest average error, the correlation fit 38 experimental points with an average and maximum percentage error of 4.3 and 14.8, respectively. For the fluid system showing the least error, average and maximum percentage errors of 1.8 and 4.3, respectively, were calculated using 29 experimental points. INTRODUCTION Use of non-Newtonian fluids in the petroleum industry is not new. Fluids of this type have been used for many years as fracturing agents and drilling muds. Recently, attention has focused on the use of high molecular weight polymer solutions for secondary recovery. Results have been reported on studies relating to the flow behavior of polymer solutions in porous media.1-4 Each study gives the viscosity in the Darcy equation as a function of the rheological properties of the fluid, the characteristics of the porous medium and the pressure gradient. The functional forms of the reported expressions differ somewhat in each study. The first three studies used unconsolidated porous media while the fourth used a single consolidated core. Because of the limited information available on the flow of non-Newtonian fluids in porous media, further investigation was undertaken in this area. We selected non-Newtonian fluids that did not contain high molecular weight polymers in order to minimize core plugging. The over-all objective was to gain a better understanding of the flow behavior of non-Newtonian fluids in consolidated porous media. Specifically, our goal was to determine the relationship between the average shear rate in a core and the frontal velocity. Because of this goal, it was necessary to determine the effect of permeability on the shear rate-frontal velocity relationship. We wanted to replace the viscosity in the Darcy equation with an expression relating to the average shear rate in the core and the rheological properties of the non-Newtonian fluid. THEORY For a time-independent, non-Newtonian fluid, the apparent viscosity is a function of the shear rate. This relationship is given by µ = F(v')...........(1) With Eq. 1, a single value of shear rate determines the apparent viscosity at that shear rate. With flow in porous media, a spectrum of shear rates occurs at any average throughput. An average shear rate v' can be used to represent the spectrum of shear rates that exists within the core. By using v' and the rheological data given by Eq. 1, an effective viscosity is determined for the flowing fluid. If v' is the correct average, µe becomes the appropriate viscosity for use in the Darcy equation. Under these conditions, flow rate-pressure drop relationships can be determined for non-Newtonian fluids. HOW the correct average shear rate might be related to the frontal velocity through the core and the characteristics of the porous media will now be considered. Two discrete types of microstructure me seen in cermets formed by the reaction: 4Al (liquid) + 3SiO2 (glass) — 2A12O3(a) + 3Si (solid) Relatively coarse-grained macroscopically isotropic specimens resulted from reaction with aluminum containing appreciable silicon, while macroscopically anisotropic fine-grained specimens were formed by reaction with aluminum low in silicon. Optical microscopy, electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction suggest that the anisotropic material contains gross areas in which submicroscopic grains of a A12O3 are oriented along radial lines drawn from the specimen surface. These lines are presumed to originate at defects in an otherwise protecting surface layer. A unique cermet is formed by the reduction of high-silica glass by molten aluminum according to the reaction: 4A1 (liquid) + 3SiO2 (glass) — 2A12O3 (a) + 3Si (solid) The free-energy change accompanying this reaction is -150 kcal at 800°C; the volume change (volume of A12O3 and silicon minus volume of SiO2) is +6 pct. The reaction product, however, contains aluminum metal as well as Al2O3 and silicon because some of the product silicon is dissolved in the aluminum bath and is replaced by aluminum in the structure. The product is a hard gray solid that retains the external dimensions of the original silica article. The system has been studied in the past, the investigations culminating in patents to George1, 2 and Saw-chuk., The former emphasize that this reaction is but one of a relatively broad class of such systems, while the latter demonstrates that a marked improvement in the gross physical properties of the cermet can be obtained by dissolving appreciable quantities of silicon in the aluminum reactant. The system has also been studied by workers at Rolls Royce Ltd.,4-6 who have patented the addition of small quantities of arsenic, antimony, bismuth, or phosphorus to the reactant bath to SO impede the reaction that glass fibers may be metal-coated by immersion in molten aluminum.

The evaluation and selection of coals for producing metallurgical coke is indeed a complex process simply because coal is a complex and variable substance which is sensitive to how it is treated from the time it is mined until it is transformed into coke. A review of some of the more common evaluation tests made on coal and how the test results are applied in commercial practice should be of interest. Parameters used to select coking coal blends for wet and preheated charges should also be of interest.

An experimental method is describedfor Ihe determination of the derivative of the surface free energy (y,) with surface orientation using symmetric bicrystals. The method measures the equilibrium root-angle of grain boundary grooves for the same grain boundary on two different surfaces. In contrast to previous methods, the presence of annealing twins is not necessary. Results on silver at 900°C indicate that ??s/?3 is 0.014y, on the (loo), 0.075y, on the (111), and < 0.004?s on the (110). DURING an investigation of the kinetics of grain-boundary grooving on silver&apos; values of the derivative of the surface free energy ?s with respect to orientation were needed. Previous investigations of these so-called torque terms show that, for low-index planes in copper2 and nickel,&apos; a finite derivative exists even near the melting point. These two studies give the only previously published values of the torque on low-index metal surfaces. These investigators measured the equilibrium root angles, both greater than and less than 180 deg, along the lines where a twin boundary intersects a free surface. The technique described here is suitable for materials which do not have annealing twins, and enables the surface for study to be chosen instead of having to work in a direction normal to the twin trace on the surface. The purpose of this paper is to describe this new technique and to report the values found for the (111): (100), and (110) surfaces of silver. To check the technique proposed above, a series of 99.99 pct Ag bicrystals were used. These bicrystals were grown from the melt by a modified Bridge-man technique so that a low-index direction was parallel to the growth direction. Two orthogonal faces were studied on each bicrystal. THE great Swedish export iron ore mines are Kiruna and Malmberget in the north above the Arctic circle and Grängesberg in Central Sweden, see Figs. 1 to 3. These mines exported in 1951 about 13 million metric tons of high grade iron ore and concentrates. The origin of these three ore fields seems to be the same. They are of pre-Cambrian age and are regarded as typical instances of primary eruptive ore that has thrust up as glowing masses of lava flow between two somewhat older beds of porphyry. Apparently the ore and the porphyry became segre. gated from common parent magmas by a process of differentiation. Despite the fact that the Kiruna orebody belongs to the earliest pre-Cambrian formation, it has been influenced to an unusually small extent by later metamorphosisms, apart from its having been set on edge through folding and wrenching off by a number of later faults. The Kiruna ore occurs along a stretch of more than 4 miles as a series of slabs or lenses sloping steeply toward the east and sandwiched between two beds of porphyry. The main orebody has a length of about 3 miles and an average width of 300 ft with a maximum of 600 ft. The dip varies from 65" to 45" toward the east and the known depth is 3000 ft, although magnetic surveys indicate it may be at least 6000 ft. Malmberget has undergone a more thorough transformation, having been pressed and crumpled into a meandering band of disconnected layers and lenses. The largest of the more connected bodies of ore, the Great Ore Layer, outcrops on a low mountain ridge and has a total length of about 4 miles and a maximum width of about 300 ft.
