The Agua Fria mine is in eastern Honduras at Lat. 140" 06' N., Long. 86" 36' W. Danli, the seat of the local municipal government, is the nearest town. The property is approximately 44 miles east of Tegucigalpa, the terminus of a truck road from the Pacific coast. The mine lies at an altitude of 3300 ft. with surrounding elevations as high as 6000 feet. For 20 years the oxidized croppings of the Agua Fria vein had been worked intermittently when in 1927 an attempt was made to open the property. A shaft was sunk 300 ft. and considerable ore was blocked out, but before a mill could be installed financial difficulties arose and the mine reverted to the original owners. Erle Y. Halliburton, of Los Angeles, purchased the property in 1934. At that time a careful consideration of all factors involved showed that air transport was the only practical method of moving the equipment and machinery necessary to commence production. The other alternative was by muleback, which required sectionalizing all equipment to a maximum load of 200 lb., and during the rainy season this type of freighting was subject to serious delays. It was decided to purchase a trimotor Ford powered by three Pratt and Whitney Wasp B motors developing 400 hp. each. There were several reasons for the choice: (1) this type of plane was available at a reasonable price, owing to its replacement by faster models on most of the airlines in the United States; (2) the ship was capable of carrying a pay load of 3000 Ib. over the required distance; (3) since this airplane had been widely used there would be no difficulty in securing competent personnel or in purchasing spare parts. It was necessary to rebuild the plane for cargo servicc. The windows were removed and the fuselage was entirely covered. A hatch was cut in the top of the fuselage to receive heavy crane loads and pieces of freight that were too large or too long to go through the rear door. The seats were removed and the interior of the plane was lined with Duralumin sheets. A heavy-duty landing gear was installed and the floor was reinforced. The nearest site for an airport was two miles north of the mine. The necessary grading was done by a small track-type tractor with a wheeled grader, which was brought in overland. The oil and gas industry of New Mexico recorded notable progress ill 1935. More wells were brought in than in any previous year, and important new discoveries were made. The total number of completions was 340, of which 260 were oil wells, 8 were gas wells and 72 were dry holes. The total oil production was 20,228,947 bbl., an appreciable increase over the 1934 production of 16,636,804 barrels. Many of the wells completed in southeastern New Mexico were acidized. This treatment proved highly effective in increasing the capacity of the wells, the resulting potentials usually being two to ten times as large as before acid treatment. In the Lea County fields in which proration was entirely on an acreage basis, the tendency of many of the operators was to complete their wells according to best conservation practice rather than to obtain the largest possible potential. Much remedial work was done in the Hobbs, Cooper, Jal and Eunice fields, and with excellent results. At many of the wells high gas-oil ratios were greatly reduced and encroaching waters shut off by setting packers. Several companies carried on pretentious geophysical campaigns in the southeastern part of the state. The location of the Amerada discovery well in the Monument field was based on geophysical surveys. The New Mexico Oil Conservation Commission, established by the 1935 Legislature and consisting of the Governor, the Commissioner of Public Lands and the State Geologist, began to function in May. Production in the state thereafter was based on orders issued by the Commission. Proration in the Hobbs field, which had been provided for since July, 1930, by successive proration agreements signed by all operators in the field and approved by the State Geologist, was continued by the Commission by giving approval to the current proration agreement,. THE discovery of oil on the Goleta anticline has extended the petroliferous areas of California 18 miles west of the previous limit at Summerland and 35 miles south of the fields at Santa Maria. In each of these localities the oil is found in the Miocene-Pliocene strata, but as the oil at Goleta is found in the Sespe formation, which is generally considered as Oligocene or lowermost Miocene, the Goleta field extends the production of that horizon 52 miles west of South Mountain, the previous western outpost. Two horizons of high-gravity, paraffin-base oil have been found at shallow depths, and the exploratory well, Goleta No. 1, is now being drilled to test the productivity of an expected horizon in the Meganos formation. The Goleta structure is 12 miles west of the city of Santa Barbara and 2 miles north of the coast. Although it is within part of the old Spanish Rancho, Los Pueblos, it corresponds to T. 4 N., R. 29 W., S. B. B. and M., Santa Barbara county, California. The discovery well, Goleta No. 1 was drilled by the Miley Petroleum Ex-ploration Co. on the Tecolote ranch in the part of the Spanish grant corresponding to the sw. 1/4 of the nw. 1/4 of Section 3. Despite the apparent isolated position of the Goleta field, it is within the Ventura basin. The idea that the Ventura basin terminates at the ocean beach near the city of Ventura is neither sup-ported by the geologic structures nor the sequence of strata west of that city. This basin at the present time is known on the land as the Santa Clara valley and beneath the sea as the Santa Barbara channel. It extends westward to Point Concepcion. The Ventura basin, before the Miocene and Pliocene epochs of deformation, was much broader than at the present time. It is bounded by two lines of uplift, the Santa Ynez range on the north and the Santa Monica mountains with their extension, the Channel islands, on the south. Both of these ranges trend east and west. The Ventura basin and the mountains that bound it are part of a remark-able east-west orogenic unit, which interrupts the pre-vailingly northwest ranges along the Pacific Coast.

R.G.K. Morrison (Chairman, Dept. of Mining Engineering and Applied Geophysics, McGill University, Montreal, Que. Canada) - The authors have introduced a subject, the intensive study of which has awaited scientific developments. These are now such as to justify a thorough review of our thinking on the causes and control of rockbursts. The formulae developed in the paper, the comparison between rockbursts and earthquakes in figure 1 and the energy data relating to explosives serve as an effective foundation. In the paper this writer is quoted as suggesting that energy of the order of 10 x 10 11 ft. lb. may have been released in some of the heaviest rockbursts in the Kolar Gold Field. He now hastens to add that such an estimate has no scientific validity. It arises only from a casual comparison of surface and underground effects of the medium heavy bursts, referred to in the paper and estimated by Jones at 3.0 x 1010 ft.lbs., with those of obviously greater magnitude. In any case, we have the estimate by Jones above, that by a team of seismologists 1 on the Witwatersrand of 10 x 1010 ft.lbs., that by Coates of 3.8 x 10" ft.lbs., also referred to in the paper, that by Blan-chard2 for the catastrophic rockburst at Springhill, N.S., of only 7.4 X 107 ft. lbs., and finally the range covered by Cook, referred to in the paper. It is probable also that data for the heavy rockburst at Merkers3 in the WERRA potash area of Germany are available as it was recorded on seismographs from Moscow to Spain. It is the writer's impression that some standardization is present in the estimates above for 10 x 10 10, 3.8 x 1010 and 7.4 x 107 ft.lbs., respectively. The latter, for Springhill, represents a relatively low order of magnitude. It is obvious that any energy estimate must be related to the local geometry of openings at the time of the event. It is also obvious that any explanation of the causes of rockburst must be capable of providing a wide range of energy. However, we must remember that the energy release is an effect indicating magnitude. The cause lies with the mechanism initiating the primary failure, generating the seismic activity, to which much of the damage is probably due.

The nature of freckle segregation is determined by chemical analyses, microradiograplzy, and electron microprobe. In addition, the influence of chemistry variation on freckle formation is studied in laboratory experiments. It is demonstrated that controlled laboratory solidification can produce freckle segregation. "FRECKLE" segregation is a discontinuous, rod-like segregation observed in vacuum consumable -electrode ingots. Figs. 1 and 2 show this segregation as pencil-like, dark etching areas of segregation found in longitudinally and transversely sectioned consumable-electrode ingots. In most cases the segregation is perpendicular with respect to gravity and parallel to the longitudinal axis of the ingot. The segregation is most often encountered at or around midradius in large vacuum consumable-electrode ingots. The austenitic alloys, A-286* and 718, † have shown particular susceptibility to this mode of segregation. The origin of these rodlike pockets of segregation is not well-understood. It has been suggested that the segregation is a result of a portion of the electrode dropping off and passing through the arc un-melted. On the other hand, smeltzer1 has demonstrated the freckle segregation in A-286 to be comprised of low-melting constituents relative to the matrix melting point. The discontinuous nature of the segregation is the most perplexing facet of the freckle-segregation problem. It was to gain some insight into this part of the problem that this work was undertaken. I) PROCEDURE At the outset of the work identification of the phases present and the elements concentrated in the freckle areas was undertaken. The electron micro-probe was used to determine general enrichment as well as -specific phase chemistry. Microradiography using cobalt and chromium radiation was also used on the freckle areas again to determine the elements involved in the segregation. X-ray diffraction patterns were made from portions of these same foil specimens. Optical microscopy and Knoop hardness measurements were also used

IN the course of an investigation on chromium containing minor amounts of alloying elements, the information herein has been obtained on the crys-tallographic orientations resulting from arc melting, rolling, and annealing. The chromium used in this investigation was electrolytic flake obtained from the Electro Metallurgical Co. This material was heated for 20 hr at 1600°C in hydrogen with a dew point of about — 100°C. The oxygen and nitrogen content of the chromium after this treatment was 0.0003 pct 0 and 0.005 pct N. Five pounds of this chromium were arc melted in a water-cooled copper crucible. After arc melting, the oxygen and nitrogen contents were 0.002 and 0.025 pet, respectively. A section of this ingot is shown in Fig. 1. By means of a back-reflection Laue technique, the crystal habit of the cast ingot was determined. As expected, it was found that the [loo] was approximately the axis of the columnar grains. In this respect, chromium behaves like other body-centered-cubic metals in that a cubic axis is normal to the cold surface of the mold. A slab cut from this ingot was rolled at 600°C as follows: four 30 pct reductions were made with intermediate anneals at 1200°C for 15 min. Rolling was done with the [loo] of the columnar grains in the rolling direction. Following the final anneal, an 80 pct reduction was taken at 600 °C. The final sheet thickness was ten mils. By polishing and etching, the thickness was reduced to four mils and the grain orientation determined by the transmission Laue method using molybdenum radiation with a zirconium filter. Fig. 2 is the (110) pole figure for this material with the ideal (100) [011] and (111) [112] orientations indicated. The orientation is typical of most cold rolled body-centered-cubic metals having the [llO] of the grains approximately in the rolling direction and the (100) planes approximately in the plane of the rolled sheet. There is also evidence of some 10) [1 orientation. The grain orientation of sheet rolled 40 and 80 pct in the same direction as before at 600°C followed by recrystallization at 12000 C for 15 min was determined by a back-reflection Laue technique. A random texture was found in both cases. This 1200°C 15 min anneal was found to give complete recrystallization and some grain growth.

THE spontaneous polarization surveys dealt with in this paper were carried out near Guddadarangavvanahalli (lat. 14° I7' N.; long. 76° 24' E.) in Chitaldrug district, which forms part of the Chitaldrug schist belt. The occurrence of gold, copper, lead and antimony ores has been noticed for several years but efforts to exploit them have been unsuccessful, therefore some spontaneous polarization surveys were made in the hope of finding indications of workable ore bodies. The country examined has a rugged topography, with numerous hills on which there is little vegetation. The climate is generally dry, the average annual rainfall of the tract being about 25 in., of which 17 in. occurs during the southwest monsoon. The geological formations of the area pertain to an ancient schistose series known as the Dharwar system (Archean). Locally, the rock formations have been divided into three series1-the chloritic series (or the Chitaldrug formation), the clay series (or the G.R. formation) and the trap series (or the Jogimardi trap). The chloritic series includes a complex of altered ancient traps and volcanic agglomerates intermixed with some schists of sedimentary origin, all of which are highly metamorphosed. The lithological types of this series are mostly distinguishable as greenstone schists, calc-chloritic schists, slaty schists, ochery and calcareous micachlorite schists, with subordinate bands of secondary limestone. The clay series (G.R. formation) is made up of shaly and argillistic schists, lithomargic clays, sandstones and brecciated ferruginous quartzites. The Jogimardi trap is mostly of the nature of an epidiorite (hornblende diabase), which is distinctly intrusive in the form of large laccolithic and narrower dikelike masses. In addition to this trap, there are other minor intrusives such as the chalybitic trap, quartz porphyry and quartz reefs. The topographical and geological features of the area are noted on the map of Fig. I. The locations of some of the spontaneous polarization centers determined by the geophysical survey are indicated also. METHOD OF SURVEY AND APPARATUS EMPLOYED The spontaneous polarization surveys were carried out in the manner recommended by the Imperial Geophysical Experimental Survey.2 Preliminary reconnaissance was first carried out along a series of parallel traverse lines that were laid out over the area. The paper describes the use of the Electric Pilot in the Permian Basin for making permeability surveys of wells and for the selective acidization of wells. A general summary of the information obtained from the many permeability surveys run in this area is given, and the possible application of this information to reservoir control problems is discussed. The application of the Electric Pilot on specific wells, involving well completion, acidizing and workover operations is also included. Introduction The Electric pilot is a comparatively new tool in oil-producing areas. From the beginning, the possibilities of this new service caught the imagination of many of the oil operators and acidizing engineers. Through the continued and ever increasing use of the pilot during the past year, and the close cooperation of the oil operators who have used this service, the efficiency and utility of the Electric Pilot service has been increased to a point where it is now a well established and recognized service. There are two major uses for the Electric Pilot: (I) permeability survey; (2) selective acid treatments. Permeability surveys are made to determine the thickness of the various permeable sections at the borehole, the vertical position of these zones at the bore hole, and the relative capacities of the various zones. Nomenclature Data obtained from the permeability survey are used to calculate three different indexes that pertain to the volume of fluid injected into the various permeable zones. A nomenclature for these various indexes has been set up, which correspond with the various productivity indexes, except that they are a measure of injected fluid rather than produced fluid. The nomenclature and definition of the indexes used in connection with a permeability survey by the Electric Pilot are as follows: 1. Capacity.—The volume of water injected into an individual permeable zone, in gallons Per minute. 2. Capacity Index.—The volume of water injected into an individual permeable Zone, in gallons Per minute Per pound Per Square inch differential Pressure. 3. Specific Capacity Index.—The volume of water injected into an individual permable zone in gallons Per minute Per pound per square inch differential per foot of thickness of the zone at the borehole. Capacity is the most generally used index, and for planning initial acidizing procedures and most workover jobs it is sufficient. For comparing permeability surveys on the same well before and after

Front Range, Colorado: The majority of the rocks comprising the Front Range of Colorado are pre-Cambrian schists, gneisses, and intrusives which have been elevated to form part of the Southern Rocky Mountain physiographic province. The region is noted mainly for its production of gold and silver, but ores of tungsten, fluorspar, uranium, copper, and iron have been worked. Geological literature1-' describes pitchblende and other radioactive minerals occurring at Jamestown, Boulder County; Central City, Gilpin County; and Lawson, Clear Creek County (fig. 1). Silver Deposits at Caribou Hill: The historic silver deposits of Caribou Hill, located approximately half way between Jamestown and Central City, and 35 miles in a straight line northwest of Denver, appeared particularly intriguing as an area to prospect for uranium for the following reasons: here exists an isolated group of high-grade silver veins in the center of a mining district containing occurrences of uranium, and, in two of the well-known uranium deposits of the world, those at Great Bear Lake, Canada, and Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia, uranium is associated with silver in similar fissure veins. An exploration program, conducted in the spring of 1945, directed special attention to Caribou Hill and was rewarded with the discovery of heavy, canary-yellow stained specimens of'pitchblende. The veins are confined to shear zones cutting a north-south, elongated quartz-monzonite stock of Tertiary (?) age lying in the axis of a major anticline of the Idaho Springs biotite schist, the oldest pre-Cambrian formation in the district. The stock is one and three-quarter miles long by more than a mile wide, and Caribou Hill is approximately at its center. The ore zones vary in width from a few inches to 15 ft, and one structure has been traced for a length of over 4000 ft. The ore minerals are galena, sphalerite, ruby silver, native silver, chalcopyrite, pyrite, and pitchblende. They occur most common-

INTRODUCTION The Kiirunavaara iron ore mine is situated in northern Sweden about 150 km north of the Arctic Circle. The ore body has a sheetlike shape, stretches about 4000 m N-S dipping 60°E and has an average width of 85 m. The ore body is known to a depth of more than 1500 m. Mining at present has reached a depth of about 500 m. The mineral is a magnetite containing 66-68% Fe. The ore body was originally mined as an open pit from 1900-1957. From then on the mining method has been sublevel caving. Production for the last few years has been 20-25 million tons /year. Sublevel caving is a mining method with many merits. One of the most valuable is the ability of using a high degree of mechanization. Today, 25 years after sublevel caving was introduced at Kiirunavaara, the advantages of the method have been more or less exhausted, and the disadvantages are more obvious as the rock pressure increases with depth. One of the disadvantages is the high degree of waste rock in the hoisted ore. Today the waste rock content is about 25% by weight of which 20% comes from the caved rock. Second, we are calculating a relatively high loss of ore (20%). Third, selectivity is unsatisfactory when mining different grades of ore. Field testing sublevel shrinkage caving (MSTM) is primarily aimed at lowering the content of waste rock compared to sublevel caving. ECONOMIC TARGET A simple calculation shows that if the waste rock content can be lowered from 25 to 15% the operational costs of mining will be lowered by about 40 million SEK/year (US $9 million) at a production level of 20 million tons/ year. A 15% waste content is the target of the field test. In the long range a decrease in waste rock dilution will mean lower investment costs for deeper levels. DESCRIPTION OF THE MSTM MINING METHOD One reason for decision to carry out the field test was that with MSTM the development drifts from sublevel caving could be utilized and thus the project could start without delay. The only additional development work needed was the loading level. Fig. 2 shows a profile through the MSTM area 66-68% Fe. and Fig. 3 shows the loading level.

A generalized rate equation for the reduction of iron oxide was derived from which two particular equations were obtained: one for rate controlled by the transportation of gas, the other for rate controlled by the phase-boundary reaction. Pellets of pure ferric oxide having diameters of 8.5 to 17.5 mm and a density of 4.8 g per cm3 were prepared and reduced by hydrogen at 750° to 900°C. From the analysis of data obtairzed, it was observed that neither the phase-houndarv reaction nor the transportation of gas controlled entirely the rate of redziction. Rather, the mechanism of reduction can he divided into three stages. In the beginning, the process seems to depend predominantly on the surJrce reaction, hut after a layer of iron is formed the diffusion of gas becomes the controlling factor. Towards the end, however, the rate falls sharply due to a decrease in porosity. The times predicted by the generalized equation for a certain degree of reduction showed an excellent agreement with those obtained experinmentally for pellets of varying sizes. WIDE interest in iron oxide reduction has resulted in many valuable studies pertaining to thermody-namical properties, equilibrium diagrams, and chemical kinetics. Although the thermodynamical properties and equilibrium diagrams are now known with a fair degree of accuracy, the mechanism and rate-controlling step in the reduction of iron oxides presents a problem to research workers which is still unsolved. This is because the field of chemical kinetics is so highly complex. Besides the chemical reaction between oxide and reducing gas, several other processes are occurring simultaneously such as solid-state diffusion of iron through intermediate oxides (FeO and Fe3O4), the diffusion of reducing gas inwards and of product gas outwards, and the sintering of iron if reduction is carried out above the sintering temperature of iron. Furthermore, there is a large number of variables, including the nature and flow rate of the reducing gas, the chemical composition and physical properties of the ore, the temperature of reaction, particle size, and so forth, all of which can affect both the mechanism and the kinetics of reduction. Despite the controversy and diversity of opinion about the mechanism of iron oxide reduction, three main schools of thought have emerged. According to the first, the rate is controlled by the diffusion of gas through the boundary layer of stagnant gas; the second claims that the rate is proportional to the area of the metal-oxide interface, while the third believes the transportation of reducing gas from the main stream to the metal-oxide interface and of product gas from the metal-oxide interface to the main stream to be the rate-controlling step. 1) The boundary-layer theory is true mainly for packed beds where the flow of gas through the bed is important. For a single particle, the boundary layer may be prevented from being the rate-controlling step if a gas flow rate of reducing gas above the critical flow rate is used. 2) Several workers have reported a linear advance of the Fe/FeO interface which provides excellent support for the belief that reduction is controlled by the surface area. McKewanl has given formal shape to this concept with mathematical derivation and has shown it to be valid for reduction of several iron ores, hematite, and magnetite, both by H2 and H2, H2O, N2 mixtures. Some other investigators, however, do not find this theory to be entirely valid. Deviations have been observed2 and further confirmedS3 Hansen4 also agrees that deviations do occur, at least in the latter stages of reduction, while from the data of several investigators summarized by Themelis and Gauvin,5 it is clear that the theory is not always applicable and further that, when it is applicable, it does not hold in the final stages of reduction. 3) Among those who claim the transportation of gas to be the rate-controlling step are Udy and Lorig,6 Bogdandy and Janke,7 and Kawasaki el a1.8 The validity of the theory has also been acknowledged indirectly by other research workers who show that the sintering and recrystallization of iron cause a decrease in reduction rate, for it is only if the transportation of gas is important that this sintering has any bearing. When metals are subjected to mechanical working, such as rolling, one of the phenomena that take place is a movement of the crystals of the metal into a system or systems of orientation which bear an angular relation to the direction of working. In rolled metal the crystals may orient themselves with respect to the rolling plane or the rolling direction, or both. Direct evidence of the existence of preferred orientations in rolled metal has been obtained by numerous investigators from X-ray patterns of the rolled metal. Most of these workers used a monochromatic pinhole method. Where the degree of preference for a single orientation is high the monochromatic pinhole pattern may be interpreted by a geometrical calculation based on the angular relationships of the planes in the crystal and the diffraction arcs on the X-ray pattern. This process may be aided by the geometrical construction of the locus sphere (Lagenkugel), and reflection circles of Polanyi,l Polanyi and Weissenberg,2 and Mark and Weissenberg,3 and of the plane polar figures (flachenpolfigur) of Franz Wever.4 R. M. Bozorth5 solves X-ray patterns from metals having a single preferred orientation by means of a series of charts which when placed over the X-ray pattern give directly certain angular relationships, between the crystal planes and the surface of the specimen.

One of the very simplest losses to overcome, and at small expense, is belt slip. To show the extent of the loss of money through slipping of the main belt alone, a chart, supplied us through the courtesy of the Cling-Surface Co., Buffalo, N. Y., is shown herewith, upon which this is easily ascertained. By glancing up and down column "D" of this chart it is evident that the "Cost of Avoidable Belt Slip per Year in Dollars" may vary all the way from the smallest sums into the thousands of dollars. Roughly, 2 per cent. of the potential power in the driving pulley of the engine is represented by "belt creep." Its loss is unavoidable because of the elasticity of the belt. This has been recognized and provided for in the chart, so the reader can go ahead and connect known values, while the intersection with column "D" gives the avoidable money loss. Simply zig-zag across the chart twice with a straight edge, as shown by the dotted lines and the money loss is immediately found. Thus if the total belt slip is 6 per cent. (column A) and the cost of coal per ton is $4 (column B), run a straight line through those two points and locate the intersection with column "C." Then from that point of intersection run over to the tons of coal burned per year (which in this instance has been stated as 1000 tons) and the cost of avoidable belt slip per year is shown by column "D" as being $160. To give a clear idea as to the meaning of "Total Belt Slip Per Cent." let us take an example. You find by means of a revolution counter that a given driven pulley is rotating only 940 times per minute. You figure that without slip it should rotate 1000 times per minute; 60 revolutions per minute, therefore, are absolutely lost. Dividing this 60 by the r.p.m. that pulley should make you get 0.060 or 6 per cent. which is the "Total Belt Slip." After having made this determination, it is a simple matter to apply it to the chart as has been done and determine the money loss per year due to such slip.

Pulverized coal was first used for firing cement kilns about 45 years ago, with such success that it has continued in general use. Based on cost, pulverized coal is usually the most economical fuel. In some localities natural gas or oil is cheaper, but 85.5 per cent of all cement kilns at present are fired with pulverized coal. The pulverized-coal flame is well suited to kiln conditions. Its soft, luminous nature gives it a high radiating property and the length of the flame can be readily varied to suit conditions in a kiln of any length. Ash and slag cause most of the dificulties incident to the burning of coal. In a. cement kiln, however, the ash, being similar in composition to the raw mix and being deposited uniformly in the mix and clinker, occasions no difficulty as long as it remains constant in quality and quantity. Until 6 years ago almost all cement kilns using pulverized coal employed the bin system. The coal was dried and pulverizeti in a separate plant and delivered into a bin at the kiln. Thus the bin system requires driers, storage-type pulverizers, conveying systems, individual kiln bins, pulverized-coal feeders and primary air fans. The direct-fired system requires only a pulverizer and a blower. Fig. I shows typical plants. The first installations of direct-fired pulverizers were of the impact type but fineness of pulverization was both inadequate and variable. About 1927 a few direct-fired installations employing tube-type pulverizers were made, which were much more satisfactory. As more efficient pulverizers were developed from 1934 on, equipment for direct firing was installed at a large number of plants, until now 196 of about 900 kilns in use in the United States are direct-fired. Most of these replaced antiquated bin systems. Process of Burning Cement Clinkers The process of burning cement clinkers is fundamentally one of heat transfer. In boilers and other heat-exchange apparatus the area of the surface receiving heat from the gases is the best unit for comparing output, This seems to be equally true for kilns. The inside kiln surface is the heat-receiving surface and its area is used as the unit of kiln size in the following comparisons. Heat input is based on British thermal units in the fuel. E. G. Bailey,' in his work on boiler-furnace heat absorption, has used the unit "B.t.u. available." This is the practical calorific power of the fuel, plus the heat in the air used for combustion. In other words, it is the heat available for useful work in the furnace or kiln. The unit of kiln output is barrels per hour. The composition of the raw mix, the percentage of water in the slurry of wet plants and hardness of burning all affect the output. These conditions, however, are hard to evaluate and probably have less effect on the output than irregularities of raw feed and clinker discharge and inexpert control of combustion. 13.9-1. Introduction. Any mining venture or project is undertaken with a view of gaining some benefits, which, with the modern limited corporation, means earning a return to the stockholders for the use of their funds. Thus, any manager, when confronted by an opportunity of expending funds, must realize that the funds should generate a satisfactory return. The problem then becomes one of how the manager should best expend, if he should expend, funds for opportunities that become available to him. In the evaluation of a mineral property, or of a project within an operating mineral property, there must be cognizance of the fact that the final return is dependent on many factors that are not present in other industries. The primary factor in mining operations is the orebody, which has a diminishing life. This diminishing life gives the decision maker a range of choices; for by expending more capital for a larger plant, he can work the deposit out in a shorter period (16). This may, in fact, maximize the return on the investment. Alternatively, he may wish to maximize the total profits, a course which usually requires a lower capital investment and allows a longer working life for the deposit before final depletion. Other factors that have great importance in the evaluation of mining projects are the taxation treatment of mining profits from the viewpoint of depletion, depreciation, and investment credit. Investment opportunities involve expending funds at the present time in return for future benefits. These future benefits have a degree of risk in that the annual amounts of benefits and their duration cannot be fore- cast accurately. The treatment of risk in economic analysis involves the quantification of the degree of variability of the expected future benefits and also of the initial capital expenditure. This treatment in mineral exploration may be extended to cover the initial search for an orebody
