According to statistical theory, the geostatistical methods of ore reserves estimation are greatly superior to any other method. However acceptance of geostatistics by the mining industry has been slow and not as wide spread as one would expect. One of the reasons for this cautious approach is that it is often questioned whether the geo- statistical assumptions are satisfied in real world situations. When blocks of ore are estimated in a mineral deposit, geostatistical theory can be used to determine which method of estimation should give the best results. Using this theory, the relationship between estimated value and true block value can be quantified. There is a need to verify that this theoretical relationship is actually observed in practice, and that the block estimates ' obtained using the theoretical ly best method of estimation, are actually most similar to the true block values. In this paper the results expected according to the theory are compared with the results actually obtained. Sample values from a large bedded gold deposit have been used. Blocks of ore have been estimated by a number of methods, including the polygone, inverse power of the distance, kriging, logarithmic kriging and other geostatistical methods. The block estimates have been calculated from samples on a large grid, and compared with the true block values obtained from additional samples on a much smaller grid. The results of this comparison show extremely good agreement between theory and actual results.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to assist explorationists and entrepreneurs in deciding whether to invest in gold mining concessions in lesser developed countries (LDCs) and, if so, in deciding which LDCs provide the best opportunity. The first decision is difficult in the face of common notions that foreigners are not welcome - only their money; that the best gold deposits were worked out long ago; that even if you survive the mal- aria, and in spite of 51% control by a national partner, you manage to profit from a new discovery, they will tax your operation to death, or worse yet, nationalize it. Close scrutiny of what happened to foreign investors in LDCs during the “Mexicanizationt” of the 1930's through the "Zambianization" of the 1970's shows that many of these concerns are well-founded historically. But the trend of knowledgeable writers over the past decade seems to be away from this gloomy foreboding, and towards a cautious optimism, based on recently perceptible metamorphoses in certain LDCs' conditions and attitudes. If the explorationist or entrepreneur decides to seize on this apparent opportunity, the second decision -- which of these certain LDCs to invest in -- is doubly difficult, because of the formidable tasks of coming up with a rating system to provide rational comparison, and then gathering enough current, reliable information to apply. Four computerized approaches for coal blending are described and their strengths and weaknesses are explored. Spreadsheet analysis Other than word processing, spreadsheet software is the most commonly used software. Its wide availability and ease of use are two desirable features that have led many to try to adapt it to the purpose of coal blending. These are the two main advantages of this approach. To use a spreadsheet for coal blending, each row of data represents one source of coal. Each column represents a quality of the coal, with the last column specifying the tonnage of that coal in the blend. The calculated figures are the blended qualities, which can be programmed to appear in the bottom row. A trial-and-error approach is then used to develop the best blend. Inserting any blend in the last column provides the blend characteristics at the bottom of the page. If any specifications are not met, the blend can be changed, all calculations being immediately updated. This process is repeated until all specifications are satisfied. A third advantage of this method is that it is exactly the procedure that one would go through if doing this by hand. With a spreadsheet, many more blends can be evaluated in much less time, allowing the designer to try to improve over satisfactory blends to find the best of them. The resulting improved blends or cost savings are a fourth advantage of this approach. There is only one major disadvantage of using the spread-sheet. This is that most probably the best blend is not found. As an inexpensive introduction to computer-assisted blending, which can be easily understood and cost just a few hundred dollars, this is a recommended place to begin. Computerized search Computerized search approaches represent crude first attempts at letting the computer design the blend. Unfortunately, the blends found by these programs are very often less satisfactory than those developed manually. The way these techniques work is that they design, according to some predesigned pattern, a number of different blends and then quickly evaluate them. It is then straightforward to select the best from this sample set. The quality of the results depends on the number of blends designed, the way they differ from each other (the search procedure), the number of sources available, the number of quality specifications, and the severity of the specification limits. Good results are usually obtained for small, simple problems. At best, the results obtained are inconsistent from one blend to the next. Programs of this type are advertised in the mining literature. They usually mention how many different blends are evaluated, making it clear that this is more than can be tried manually. Expert systems Expert systems use a source of information known as a knowledge base. The knowledge base, usually a set of if-then rules, attempts to reconstruct the deductive reasoning process of an expert in some job capacity. For coal blending, the usual trial-and-error process has an easily recognized pattern of rules that are followed to try to find a better blend. By following these rules, it is possible to home in on the best blend without the exhaustive search required by the previous method and without the manual manipulation of the spreadsheet approach. The use of an expert system accomplishes this. One of the rules may say something like "if BTU is out of spec, then add more in the blend from a source having a high BTU and subtract some from a source having low BTU." In other words, it goes through the trial-and-error process. The process continues until all specifications are achieved and can continue further to try to optimize the cost. Of course, less simplistic rules are also needed. One set of rules would determine maximum changes in the tonnage added or deleted to the blend or from any one source. Other rules would be needed to determine which quality to improve if two or more are out of spec. At this level, the process of building the knowledge base provides the engineer with a deeper understanding of his or her own thought processes. The advantage of obtaining better blends is clear for this approach. Two more advantages should also be apparent. One is that it follows the same common sense logic that is used when doing the blends by hand or by spreadsheet, making it easy to understand. The other is that, like the search procedure, it designs the blend rather than just analyzing manually designed blends. Thus, it has all the good features of both approaches discussed thus far while providing improved results over each. A final advantage is the ease of use and ease of development. The expert system shells that are on the market are very easy to use and can be run on microcomputers. Linear programming Linear programming is an algebraic tool that solves a set of linear equations to yield an optimal solution to a problem. The optimal solution is based on the linear model so the results are only as good as the ability of the linear model to accurately portray the reality of the problem situation. It is fortunate for the coal blending problem that a linear model can be devel¬oped that reflects exactly the problem that is required. The situation of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited, or Cominco, may be somewhat unique in that the Company is not only a manufacturer of ammonium nitrate, but as a mining company is a major user of its own product. This situation has resulted in highly successful application of ammonium nitrate-oil explosives. Several noteworthy techniques have been developed and others have been improved. Use of this material in the mining industry has led ammonium nitrate producers to adopt the term nitro-carbo-nitrate or INN for ammonium nitrate-oil blends. A small blending plant at Cominco's largest mining property, the Sullivan Mine, at Kimberley, B.C., is producing more than 80% of all the explosive used at the Sullivan, and is supplying two other Cominco mines. Application has required intensive research to determine the best forms of ammonium nitrate for use in small holes drilled for development and long-hole stoping. It has led not only to experiments to determine the best blending oil, but also to development of loading techniques to the point where NCN is being moved through loading tubes over 700 feet. It has required research into mining practices such as hole arrangement and blasting of development cuts. It has resulted in the development of a special product for secondary breaking. All this has been accompanied by the recognition of the importance of insuring safe practices at every stage.

Coal blending inherently means homogenizing a mixture of coals so that, overall, the properties of the blend meet some specifications for maintaining power plant performance and emission requirements. In common practice, however, coal blending is at best coal mixing. If necessary, more sophisticated blending systems can produce a more homogeneous feed by using accurate weighing devices and on-line coal analyzers coupled with sampling systems. Blending can be accomplished at the mine, on stockpiles, and from bins, bunkers, and silos.

Production scheduling is an integral part of intermediate- and long-range open-pit mine planning, affecting equipment selection, manpower requirements and project economics. The development of mining phases, or pushbacks, is discussed in conjunction with generating the best spatial extraction sequence. An approach to scheduling production from these mining phases is then described. Using computers and a production scheduling algorithm, the impact of cutoff grade and advanced stripping policies can be evaluated through sensitivity studies to maximize the return on project investments.

"Longwall shearers are widely employed in underground coal mines. The reliability of such machine has significant importance for successful mining operations. This paper aims at studying reliability of a longwall shearer using failure data recorded for a year. Data was pre-processed, sorted and selected for analysis. Selected data is then examined using statistical models. Distribution fitting of time-between-failure (TBF) and time-to-repair (TTR) are accomplished using three different models. Goodness-of-fit criteria is used to ascertain the best fitting model. Reliability in terms of mean-time-between-failure (MTBF), and mean-time-to-repair (MTTR) are calculated using the model which best represents the failure data. Exponential distribution best represents the time between failure and lognormal distribution the time to repair data. A well-known risk management technique Failure Mode Effect and Criticality Analysis is used to evaluate the critical breakdowns. Critical system/parts, experiencing regular failures is delineated based on this analysis. INTRODUCTION Mining is a capital intensive process, and huge monetary investment is required to develop and operate a mining project. Heavy and expensive equipment’s are employed in development and operation of these projects. In order to ensure timely completion of set milestones, it is mandatory that equipment’s perform their required task productively. Delays are not unusual owing to breakdown of these equipment’s. Breakdown or failure experienced by any of the equipment pose heavy financial burden. Moreover, frequent times, companies have to employ and dedicate additional resources to make up for such delays. Delays in project is not only detrimental to company’s image in market, but it also interrupts customer commitments. Mines having history of not fulfilling their promise usually get lower commodity price. Penalties are also imposed on the companies defaulting its obligations. Especially, in today’s world where competition among the companies are growing, success means keeping up the commitments in a timely manner. Heavy machinery and equipment are instrumental in success of any project. These machinery and equipment’s have to reliable in a sense that they can perform the set task in given time period. Reliability of these equipment plays a pivotal role in success of any project. The reliability analysis of mining equipment has long history. Many researchers have applied different statistical models for analyzing the reliability of mining machines (Samanta, Sarkar [1]. Kumar and Klefsjö [2] demonstrated the use of the power law process model for reliability assessments of repairable mining machines. Barabady and Kumar [3] performed the reliability analysis from failure data of the crushing plants."

Grinding and energy input in stirred media mills are studied as functions of grinding time, stirring speed, media size and density, solid concentration, impeller and tank dimensions and design, and other relevant variables. Ground product size and surface area are determined with respect to the above variables. Changes in energy input and media/pulp rheological properties during grinding are described. The best conditions for grinding limestone in the laboratory stirred media mills have been identified. Equations for correlations involving power and modified Reynolds numbers have been established.

This paper investigates, through case studies on a porphyry copper and a coal deposit, the differences and relevances between an approximate production schedule approach, i.e., the best case and the worst case schedules and a practical production schedule approach. The comparisons were with regards to: 1) choosing an optimum ultimate pit size, 2) determining processing capacities, 3) selecting 'optimum' cutoff grades, and 4) blending. The comparison criteria was to maximize the project net present value. Conclusions were drawn based on the study results.

Optimization has been defined as the procedure of locating the best of something or the best way of doing something (Mular, 1971). Several texts (Himmelblau, 1972; Ray and Szekeley, 1973; Box and Draper, 1969; and Lee, Adams, and Gaines, 1968) on the subject are available. Such techniques have been placed in two categories, namely, off-line optimization and on-line optimization. For the former, an optimization model is employed; for the latter, a black box approach is involved. The essence of an optimization problem becomes obvious, when a response surface is considered. Suppose that a response (in this case, a criterion of improvement such as profit per day; grade of concentrate per day) denoted by Y, depends only on two variables, X1 and X2, which can be manipulated and controlled. The relationship between Y, X1 and X2 may be represented graphically as shown in Fig. 1. The diagram is called a response surface and its height, Y, is determined by X1 and X2. Points associated with equal responses constitute response contours. The shape is that of a hill, and optimization is the procedure of ascending the hill to reach the top (maximum). In practice, a response surface is subject to disturbances which distort its shape and shift its location from time to time, so that the exact location of a maximum is imprecise. Generally, constraints (restrictions of some sort) on responses and manipulable variables serve to define a region of permissible operation.

The U.S. cement industry experienced its best year ever during 2004 in terms of production and shipments of cement. Clinker, portland and masonry cements production and shipments were up considerably. Clinker production as reported to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was 87.75 Mt (96.73 million st), an increase of 5.4 percent. Gray and white portland cement production from domestic and imported clinker was estimated to be 91.6 Mt (101 million st), up 5 Mt (5.5 million st) from 2003.

There are huge benefits for mining operations that have a well-defined maintenance program that is understood and followed across the total operation. But for operations lacking a quality maintenance program, there is equal assurance that nearly every major maintenance problem can be traced to this omission. Few problems will be permanently corrected until such a program is implemented. Definition The maintenance program re-quires the interaction of all mine departments. Initially, the production department will request work and the maintenance department will identify work, principally through preventive maintenance inspection and testing efforts. Maintenance will then classify the new work to determine the best way to respond. Maintenance will plan selected major jobs to enable its crews to carry them out more effectively. Maintenance will schedule the planned work with operations. Supervisors will assign all types of work to their crews then, control the work through effective supervision. As work is completed, maintenance will measure the work using an accurate information system. Next, it will assess overall accomplishments against goals such as performance standards or budgets. In addition, the pro-gram would prescribe a means to evaluate every aspect of the operation as it affects maintenance so that necessary improvements or changes can be identified, prioritized and acted on. Such evaluations should be part of a mine-wide continuous improvement effort. A well-defined maintenance program is one of the best investments a mining operation can make to assure its profitability. Educating the total operation on the pro-gram assures long-term dividends from the investment.

The electrical conductivity of rutile was optimised as a function of time, temperature and gas composition. These optimised conditions were used to treat rutile/zircon feed prep concentrate samples from a South African heavy minerals producer, prior to electrostatic separation. Enhanced separation between rutile and zircon was obtained when compared to untreated samples. Samples treated in a hydrogen atmosphere and cooled in nitrogen showed the best separation when passed through a high tension electrostatic separator using conditions of high sample temperature and high relative humidity.

This paper presents a review of several models of roadheaders being used in today?s tunnel projects. The features of different models of roadheaders are presented and compared. Roadheader size and cutter power generally determine which roadheader is best for a particular job. We will also present a model for matching features of the roadheader to the anticipated ground conditions such that the most efficient machine is selected for the project.

5 miles of soft ground tunnel excavation for the SAWS W‑6 project finished months early despite difficult conditions. Success was achieved using TBMs and other equipment built long before most of the crew was even born. The old school means and methods easily adapted to the conditions encountered and were key to the project’s success. Unfortunately, an industry trend is to specify more “advanced” equipment which can sacrifice adaptability or productivity for a perceived reduction in risk. This case history discusses when traditional methods may be the best option.

This paper presents a summary of basic requirements for the design, installation and operation of booster fans in coal mines, especially in deep and/or extensive mines. It includes a brief description of the major steps that should be followed to ensure that these units are used in coal mines safely and efficiently. The guidelines were prepared based on the standards and regulations adopted by two prominent coal mining countries, the best practices developed by the mining industry, and the applicable standards used in the United States for the fail-safe operation of main fans.
