A calibration of the Frantz isodynamic magnetic separator relates the current in the electromagnet and the transverse slope of the chute to the specific susceptibility at which separation is being effected. In addition to providing a rapid measure of the specific susceptibility of minerals and composite grains, the calibration provides a guide to operation of the Frantz isodynamic separator for mineral separation, and to the nature of composite grains. The most sensitive magnetic separation is obtained by using the highest practicable current and transverse slope, and the lowest practicable longitudinal slope.INTRODUCTIONProbably all minerals have a magnetic susceptibility measurable by sensitive techniques. However, magnetic separation between minerals which have low but different specific susceptibilities, and which for many purposes are considered essentially non-magnetic, has only become practicable with the development of the Frantz isodynamic separator.The construction and principle of this highly sensitive separator has been described by S. G. Frantz as an appendix to a description by 'Gaudin and Spedden (1943) of its application to the separation of sulphides constituting mill products.Various publications (e.g. Hess, 1949, Hutton, 1952) refer to its use in separating the mineral constituents of rocks, ores, and unconsolidated sands.As used in this study the Frantz isodynamic separator consists of a vibrating chute mounted centrally between the pole pieces of an electromagnet (Fig. 1). This unit may be inclined in any direction by the universal mounting, and the electromagnet current is continuously adjustable from 0 to 1·5 amperes.

Gold mining require high levels of dilution control due the high value of ore. These types of operations employ short benches, which are suitable for ore control, lower displacement and more representative block models. However, shorter benches makes fragmentation by blasting difficult because blast designs tend to be stiff in regards to burden/bench height ratio. This is especially relevant in hard, massive ore bodies where usual drilling diameters lead to poor energy distribution. In regards to control ore loss and dilution, there are different techniques to minimize both, which include: panel blasting, buffer blasting to muck piles and differential loading of areas of the blast bench. All of them should be sequenced with appropriate displacement along the ore/waste contacts. This paper describes extensive engineering approaches to achieve both dilution control while not hurting fragmentation in the very hard, massive ore sections of a mine case study. Ore Tracker microchips are used to correlate performance of these designs at the SAG mill (bottleneck of this specific operation). Another gold mine uses the same technology to detect when and where operational dilution is happening. The system tells where flagging of the different ore bodies has been followed in order to detect which operators pass the excavation limits beyond ore control flagging.

In underground mining applications, successful blasting results in less damage, which may lower support costs, lower dilution and produce a uniform fragmentation. The explosive detonation process creates a pressure front that propagates a stress wave into the surrounding rock mass at a high velocity. The stress wave can induce varying degrees of damage, depending on rock strength and physical properties, to the excavated area. This paper presents a summary of a research project that was conducted to investigate the propagation of explosive-induced stress waves in hard rock media and the mechanism of rock damage and fracturing due to shock wave propagation. The primary objective of this work was to numerically simulate the experimental study of blast-induced rock fracturing conducted within Inco Limited, Mines Research department. ITASCA?s discontinuum code UDEC (Universal Distinct Element Code), was used to simulate the results of the controlled blasting experiments. In brief, the focal point of the paper can be summarized as follows: ? Investigate the size of the stress-wave-induced fractured zone around the blasthole, ? Examine the extent and direction of the radial fractures that form outside the blasthole, and ? Explore the mechanisms that cause rock breakage.

It has long been known that ventilation is a cost-effective method to lower respirable dust concentrations in all types of mining applications. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has been working on a number of different research techniques that use ventilation as a critical component to lower respirable dust levels at surface and metal/nonmetal operations in the United States. This article presents five such research efforts. The first research area discusses how improving the ventilation flow patterns in an iron ore mill facility lowered respirable dust concentrations by 31 pct throughout the primary grinding area. The second research area examines how respirable dust levels were lowered at a dimensional stone shop by using air cleaning units suspended from the ceiling. A third area discusses how improvements in ventilation at underground limestone mines lowered respirable dust concentrations. The fourth area examines how improvements in dust filtration and pressurization systems significantly impacted the air quality in enclosed cabs of surface mining equipment. The last area presents a newly developed clothes cleaning technique. This technique uses an air spray manifold to blow dust from a worker’s clothing in an enclosed booth, which confines the dust for capture and removal by a baghouse dust collector. These research areas represent an array of different control technologies to lower respirable dust concentrations. Ventilation is an integral part of these control technologies.

Conventional barrier pillars in underground coal mines are intended to protect mains and sub-main entries for relatively long periods of time. Inter-panel barrier pillars that may be used in especially deep coal mines, say, below 800 m (2,400 ft), are intended to protect longwall panel faces and adjacent panel entries for the life of nearby panels. Barrier pillar failures have serious consequences, especially when failure is sudden and catastrophic. Design of barrier pillars is thus of considerable importance to safety and efficiency of operations. Locally, failure occurs at the limit to elasticity when stress tends to exceed strength. Strength of rock is stress dependent, so an analysis of stress is central to rational design of barrier pillars. There are several approaches to stress analysis for coal mine pillar design that range from the simplified but popular tributary area method including variations that use empirical definitions of the tributary area (volume) to more sophisticated numerical methods such as the boundary element method and the finite element method. Despite ease of use, empirical methods are limited and always suspect when applied to conditions beyond their scope of definition, while boundary element methods do not generally include pillars in the solution domain. The finite element method is not so restricted and thus is a natural choice for conventional and inter-panel barrier pillar safety analyses. Caving of roof strata certainly affects the distribution of stress about longwall faces and nearby barrier pillars. Conventional wisdom that considers roof strata to respond as cantilever beams indicates the longer the span the greater are loads on longwall faces and face supports. Failure of roof beams, caving, shortens spans and relieves face and support loads. The same view is applicable to barrier pillars in that long roof spans outside of barrier pillars leads to higher pillar loads than short spans. Hence, caving should be beneficial to barrier pillar safety. However, the benefit may be small depending on the extent of caving and only in the form of a slight reduction in overburden weight transmitted to the barrier pillar, especially in case of inter-panel barrier pillars. FINITE ELEMENT MODEL Finite element models for stress analysis in rock mechanics are formulated in consideration of physical laws, kinematics, and material laws. These models meet the essential requirements for equilibrium of stress, satisfy strain displacements relations, and in a general sense, relate stress to strain through material laws, often referred to as constitutive relations. The last may be complex and replete with nonlinearities. A de facto engineering material law is the elastic model in the form of Hooke?s law for linear, homogeneous materials that may be anisotropic. A limit to elasticity is imposed by strength in the form of a failure criterion or yield function that accommodates triaxial stress states. Examples used in rock mechanics are the well-known Mohr-Coulomb (MC)criterion, the popular Hoek-Brown (HB) criterion, and the Drucker-Prager (DP) criterion. The first is linear in stress, while the second is nonlinear. Both do not include any effect of the intermediate principal stress. The last is also linear in stress but includes the intermediate principal stress. All show an increase in the major principal stress at failure with confining pressure. In the UT2/3 finite element programs, the failure criterion Y is a nonlinear, anisotropic form and is also the plastic potential [1]: [YJI=+ 11NYJI=+- (1) ] where N is an exponent, usually 2, and J2 and I1 are nonlinear anisotropic forms of the second invariant of deviatoric stress and the first invariant of principal stress. The form (1) reduces to DP when N=1and isotropy prevails. When Y = 1, the limit to elasticity is reached and plastic deformation is possible. The material constants that enter (1) are all computed from unconfined compressive, tensile, and, in case of anisotropy, shear strengths. These latter strengths may be estimated from conventional laboratory test data. Of course, joints in field-scale rock masses induce different values. How different is often a matter of conjecture. For comparative studies, laboratory rock properties seem adequate. Inelastic, that is, plastic behavior occurs with strain beyond the elastic limit. Strain hardening, ideal plasticity, and strain softening are possibilities. Ideally brittle behavior with complete loss of strength is an extreme form of strain softening [2]. Caving may also be considered as strain softening with a less drastic reduction of material properties. As intact roof strata fail, fall, and form a rubble pile below, a new material is formed with greatly reduced elastic moduli and strengths, say, 1/100th of the original intact moduli and strengths. From another viewpoint, caving is simply a natural cut and fill process. Input for stress analysis by the finite element method includes: 1. Preexcavation stress state 2. Geology (stratigraphic column) 3. Structure (major faults, joint sets) 4. Elastic moduli 5. Strengths, and specific gravities of each rock type 6. Excavation sequence Output from an analysis includes distributions of: 1. Stress 2. Strain 3. Displacement 4. Local factor of safety (element fs) The last is defined as the ratio of strength to stress and in view of the failure criterion (1), is the ratio [fsJstrengthJstress=] where the numerator is the maximum possible value and the denominator is the actual value of the square root of the second invariant of deviatoric stress. This invariant is a measure of shear stress intensity but also reduces to uniaxial tensile and compressive strengths as the case may be. Since its introduction to North America in the early 1970s, various elements of the system have been successfully installed in a variety of applic11tions both in Canada and the U.S.A. Examples are chosen from the coal, fine aggregates, iron ore and industrial minerals industries.II. Elements of the Linatex Solids Recovery System(A) The Linatex Separator (See Fig.I)The Linatex Separator, which is the heart of the system, is a specialized type of hydrocyclone designed to give a self regulating rope discharge product. It has the familiar cyclone geometry of cylindrical and conical section, tangential inlet, apex and vortex finder. The apex is enclosed in a unique patented automatic underflow regulator consisting of a collapsible rubber sleeve, and the overflow line is a siphon-leg, with a controlled air bleed valve. The siphon leg is adjusted so as to balance the internal negative pressure acting as a closing force on the underflow regulator against the mass of slurry pressing down on it from the cone section of the Separator. With correct adjustment the underflow regulator will close drip-tight on a water only feed. As solids accumulate in the apex of the cone the weight of solids counterbalances the vacuum and cat1ses the underflow regulator to open and discharge classified material at a controlled density."

As mining progresses in the West, the depth of material has increased, making highwall stability a major factor in safety and production. The Jim Bridger Coal Mine’has made highwall stability a priority, concentrating on safety as well as increasing and improving production. Overburden depths are increasing dramatically; the geological environment consists of medium to sot? material, faulting, water, and current pit alignment not favorable to joint planes. Angle drilling the presplit at 20 degrees became necessaryas vertical presplit drilling produced wall failures.

A quantitative chemical model of the rocks of the Broken Hill lode environment is presented to illustrate a stratiform orebody in a meaningful form to scientists interested in environmental control on the chemicalcomposition of sediments.Even though this study was restricted by the narrow range of rock analyses available it is obvious that significant chemical differences exist between the various rock units and also that some association of metallic sulphides with Ca, Mn, Fe, and P is indicated.Correlation of this evidence with that from other mining fields may point out more definite chemical relationships and elucidate the puzzle of the mode of formation of many stratiform orebodies.

The enormous and constantly increasing demand for limestone to supply a multitude of uses is a remarkable feature of the mineral industries. As approximately 130,000,000 tons of limestone are produced annually, it is not surprising that deposits at or near the surface are gradually being exhausted and that less advantageous supplies are being worked. Quarries are becoming deeper and wider year by year, and in many places the volume of overburden that must be removed to allow open-pit work has increased alarmingly. Quarrymen are also gradually learning how expensive it is to sort and clean stone from a deposit overlain by poor material. As such conditions confront the limestone industry, the natural tendency is to seek some modification in method whereby the handicaps of increasing cost may be met and overcome. Operators, some of them unwillingly, have been forced to conclude that underground work in drifts and tunnels is the most logical solution of the problem. The unwillingness of some is largely due to unfamiliarity with mining and to the unfounded fear that costs must increase and dangers multiply when mining is undertaken.

Experimental results are presented that test the hypothesis that the descaling behaviour of stainless steel slabs following reheating is controlled by interfacial roughening at the scale-steel interface. In this investigation, two stainless steels were considered: type 304 (austenitic, with 18% Cr and 8% Ni) and type 412 (ferritic/martensitic, with 11.6% Cr). It was found that the entanglement that arises at the scale-steel interface was in fact effective in maintaining scale-steel adhesion, under the mechanical descaling conditions used. In the case of type 304, descaling proceeded by fracture along chromite layers, which formed (by internal oxidation) on the austenite grain boundaries; for this steel, the extent of descaling depends most strongly on austenite grain structure, and not primarily on the conditions in the reheating furnace. In contrast, type 412 samples descaled only at the edge of the entangled zone, and showed a greater sensitivity to the reheating conditions; specifically, higher free oxygen in the reheating gas and longer reheating times were found to increase the residual scale thickness. Over the past decade there has been a great deal of research into the use of virtual reality (VR) and computer graphics in the mining industry. Much of this has led to developed applications including training simulators and accident re-construction. One other area where there is considerable potential for virtual reality is that of mining ergonomics. This paper identifies those common ergonomic limitations associated with mining equipment that can be effectively modelled using VR techniques. From this, two simple models have been developed namely (i)remote control continuous miner operation and (ii) free steered vehicle sightlines, which demonstrate the practical use of VR in this area.

The Sutong Bridge across the lower Yangtze River in China will have, when completed, the longest span (1,088 m) and the highest towers (306 m) of any cable stayed span in the world. The foundations for this record setting span will also be record setting. They are located in water depths exceeding 30 m with maximum flows exceeding 3 m/sec. The soil at the site of the main pylons consists of layers of silty sands and silty clays extending to bed rock at 270 m below river elevation. This paper describes the innovative methods used by the team of foundation designers and constructors to support this record setting bridge at this very challenging site. This paper covers three specific topics related to the foundations of the Sutong Bridge: ? Design and construction of the 131 drilled shaft (2.8/2.5 m diameter and 114/117 m long) under each of the two main pylons, ? Design and construction of the scour protection for the two main pylons, ? Construction methods used to construct the waterline pile caps (113.8 m by 48.1 m by 13.3 m deep) under each pylon.

Pamour Porcupine Mines, Limited has been actively engaged in the ''Custom Tolling'' of Gold-Bearing materials throughout the past decade. Experience acquired in this area was utilized to design and commission a custom gold milling facility at its operations in Timmins, capable of:(a) Accepting a bulk ore test sample at the rate of 150 t/d for crushing, sampling, and metals analysis;(b) Processing gold-bearing ores at a rated capacity of 150 t/d, to produce a goldbearing sulphide concentrate;(c) Processing free milling gold ores at a rated capacity of 80 t/d for total cyanidation;(d) Cyaniding custom gold flotation concentrates at a rated capacity of 80 t/d; and(e) Processing of complex gold/copper or carbonaceous ores, requiring an impurity flotation concentrate separation stage prior to cyanidation, at a rated capacity of 100 t/d.Items considered in the process design and development included:- various gold ore types available for processing;- flowsheet flexibility required;- sampling strategy as related to head grade determination and metals accounting; and- contract considerations.This paper highlights how these various considerations were used to design Pamour's ''Custom Gold Milling Facility''.

The work is being done using the Thermo-CalcTM software, and the database is being built up by obtaining good thermodynamic descriptions of all of the possible phases in the system. The database supplied did not cover all of the phases, and these had to be gleaned from literature, or modelled using experimental data. Similarly, not all of the experimental data were known, and where there were gaps or inconsistencies, experiments had to be undertaken. A preliminary version of the database was constructed from assessed thermodynamic data-sets for the binary systems only. The binary descriptions were combined allowing extrapolation into the ternary systems, and experimental phase equilibrium data were compared with calculated results. Very good agreement was obtained for the Pt-Al-Ru and Pt-Cr-Ru systems, which was encouraging and confirmed that the higher-order systems could be calculated from the binary systems with confidence. Since some of the phase models in databases were different, these phases had to be remodelled. However, more work is ongoing for information concerning the ternary phases present in the Al-Cr-Ru, Pt-Al-Ru (two ternary compounds in each) and Pt-Al-Cr (possibly more than three ternary compounds) systems. At later stage of the work, problems with the thermodynamic descriptions of the Cr-Ru and Pt-Cr binary systems were found. A programme of experimental work to overcome these has been devised, and is being undertaken. Keywords: Pt-based alloys, phase diagram calculations.

Due to the constant need to improve SAG mill performance and efficiency, extensive research into all aspects of SAG mill optimization has been performed. This paper will review the current evolution of SAG mill shell liner design and their performance at the Copperton Concentrator. The effect of these liner design changes will be discussed with respect to: • Liner configurations • Mill operating performance, i.e., throughput, power draw, mill control • Mill mechanical performance, i.e., liner wear profiles, liner life, liner breakage, liner hardness • Foundry manufacturing considerations • Economic evaluation of throughput versus liner life This paper will discuss the results of Kennecott Utah Copper’s (KUC) and ME International’s (MEI) test work, providing an insight into the past, present and potential future opportunities of SAG mill liner design.

In terms of a Research Proposals supported by a Grant Agreement dated 30 June 1973, the author was commissioned to prepare an annotated bibliography of mine fires. The main objective was to conduct a comprehensive program of library research and search of official files to prepare a list of articles dealing with actual occurrences of mine fires. This bibliography as now completed includes an annotated reference from each article or report cited, underlining the cause, extent, methods used, procedural errors made, results achieved, ventilation effects, and lessons learned from the operation of subduing the particular fire.
