Introduction The recent development of rare earth permanent magnets has revolutionized the field of magnetic separation. The advent of rare earth permanent magnets in the 1980s provided a magnetic product that was an order of magnitude stronger than that conventional ferrite magnets. This allowed for the design of high-intensity magnetic circuits that operated energy free and that surpassed electromagnets in the strength and effectiveness. New applications and design concepts that focused on the mineral and metal processing industries have evolved. This technology led to the development of various magnetic separators specifically designed for mineral processing applications. Applications that were not previously considered are now being used in primary mineral upgrading, recycling and secondary recovery. Historical perspective Lodestone was the first naturally occurring permanent magnetic material known. Lodstone was most likely used to upgrade iron ore by early civilizations. By the 1600s, the early magnet technology had advanced to quench-hardened iron-carbon alloys. The practical significance of magnetic separation was formally recognized in 1792 when an English patent was issued for separating iron ore by magnetic attraction. By today's standards, carbon steel is a very poor magnet material. It is easily demagnetized and has a very low energy product of much less than I MGOe (Million-Gauss-Oerstads). This was state-of-the-art technology for almost 300 years until chromium was added to magnet feedstock, which resulted in a three-fold increase in the energy product. The well documented addition of cobalt to permanent magnets in 1917 initiated the 30-year era of "Alnico" magnets that at the time provided a superior magnetic energy product. Since then, the science of magnetism has advanced rapidly and is now considered a highly developed branch of physics and material science. Permanent magnets have had an extremely long history. Figure 1 presents a chronology of permanent magnets that illustrates the increase in energy product. Amazing developments in material science have taken place in the last two decades. The gradual advancement of permanent magnet technology was shattered in 1967 with the initial development of samarium-cobalt (rare earth) magnets. Since that time, the advent of neodymium-boron-iron magnets provided such an increase in energy product that new design concepts were considered. New avenues of study were introduced by the complexities in the material science and physics involved in describing these new permanent magnets. Furthermore, applications for permanent magnets that were previously not considered were now viable. Rare earth elements Rare earth elements have claimed the attention of scientists for the past century. These elements were originally termed "rare" because they were thought to be quite scarce. Since then, however, geological studies have shown them to be relatively abundant. The discovery and identification of rare earth elements is complicated by the inherent difficulties in separating them from each other. The rare earth elements comprise the fifteen transition elements of Group IIIB, Period 6, of the periodic table. These elements extend from lanthanum to lutetium and are commonly called the lanthanide series. Samarium and neodymium are the two most common elements used in the commercial manufacture of rare earth permanent magnets. Commercial grade rare earth magnets There are only a few common types of rare earth magnets that are considered in the circuit design for magnetic separators. Early rare earth magnets of commercial significance (introduced in 1970) consisted of the first generation of sintered SmCo5. The energy product of these magnets ranged up to 23 MGOe, which provided the initial impetus to the field of high-energy permanent magnets. Although these magnets did not produce the extremely high magnetic field strengths of current rare earth magnets, they were relatively temperature stable. Containing 66% Co, they are the most expensive of the basic commercial rare earth permanent magnets. Their use is limited today because they are being replaced by second and third generation rare earth permanent magnets.

An integrated steel company is an industrial complex ranging from raw materials mining, through pyrometallurgical smelting and refining, and hot shaping, to product finishing and coating. Within this complex is a great variety of operations which use vast quantities of water, and a variety of water uses which can result in pollution of many different types. The industry has recognized most of its problems for some time, and has spent a great deal of money and effort in reducing and eliminating pollution. A recent survey by AISI showed that the industry has spent, within the last 15 years, two hundred forty millions of dollars on water pollution control, and has authorized spending eighty-seven millions more on this type of non¬productive facilities. While much still remains to be done, I think the record to date is one we can be proud of. In this presentation, we will attempt to outline a number of the water pollution problems encountered in an integrated steel company and to show what types of corrective action have been and are being taken, using Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation as an example.

The underground mining evolution for block cave mines in Chile and worldwide has made important strides in the last decades. Nonetheless, reserves determination in the initial stages of these types of projects—mainly for long-term planning—is not studied in as much detail as it should be, especially regarding the impact on the final value of the enterprise. Today, the first estimation of the size of a block cave mine, typically expressed in tons, tends to determine very large footprints and ore bodies. The resulting large-scale mine is obtained by applying the marginal cut-off grade (COG) to determine reserves. Yet, in many cases, it is possible to obtain an equal or higher benefit, extracting fewer reserves in less time, with a smaller active area, which significantly reduces the project’s uncertainty. To explore scenarios obtained by applying a higher marginal COG in the initial phases of the project, the Hill of Value methodology is used to estimate the net present value (NPV) in relation to the production rate and the COG. However, the application of this methodology considers certain simplifications that generate results which are not completely satisfactory in specific cases. This paper suggests an improvement of this method to obtain more reliable results regarding determination of a COG profile that will optimize the NPVof a block-cave project. The methodology was developed and applied in a massive polymetallic deposit with zinc, lead, and silver mineralization, corresponding to a real block caving project. The methodology provides NPV results that differ by approximately 15% in comparison to the real mine plan, while also being considerably simpler and faster to calculate. In summary, the proposed methodology provides a reasonable and fast procedure to estimate higher than marginal COG that increases the NPV of block cave mine projects.

SHELDON P. WIMPFEN The measure of the success of any mining operation is the size of the difference between sales realization and cost of product, including operating, sales, administra¬tive, capital and others. Evaluation of a mining project necessitates projecting costs and sales realization as accurately as possible. Possible variations in specific cost elements and sales prices must be considered. To accomplish this, project studies should include giving effect to possible fluctuations to determine the break¬even points with varying costs and prices. Development of cost data is never an easy task. Mining is characterized by a great variety of conditions which result in still more variables. Achieving realistic figures as of any specific time involves consideration of changes, which may be frequent, in labor-contract terms and equipment used, variations in working condi¬tions and mining practices, and changes in mineralization and metallurgy. The purchasing power of the dollar, which has been declining persistently, also affects the situation at any given time. The only thing that can be said of costs, with certainty, is that they will change. With this in mind, the "guideline" data in this section are offered for the use of the mining engineer. It was provided for the most part by representative companies, whose contributions are gratefully acknowledged. In reviewing the tabu¬lations and other material it is of course necessary to remember that the data presented are valid only for the time periods specified, and will change with changing economic conditions in any other. 31.1-CAPITAL COST OF PLANTS Plant capital costs are set forth in Tables 31-6 and 31-7 by year of construction. To estimate capital cost of plants built in future years, various cost bases and indexes are utilized. INTRODUCTION The work of the metallurgical engineer engaged in developing a leach, solvent extraction electro- winning process usually begins in the laboratory and generally proceeds via pilot plant testing before finally resulting in a commercial operation. The path leading to the development of the eventual process will involve a test program on leaching in order to derive information on the amenability of the copper-bearing material to acid dissolution, under various conditions. Commonly in North America the leach process of choice is either dump or heap leaching but it may also be in-situ leaching or the treatment of mine waste- waters and bleed streams. In the past, agitation and vat leaching have also been included in the list of options. Currently the economics of copper production dictate that only material of mineralogy and grade, capable of being leached without prior milling, will lead to a viable process. This is not necessarily true in other parts of the world where grades are higher and milling costs lower and therefore this paper con- fronts all the techniques available to the metallurgical engineer in terms of the evaluation of the solvent extraction process. Understanding the objectives of a laboratory and pilot plant evaluation of a solvent extraction route is important and these are described in some detail in this paper. Of at least equal importance is understanding limitations of such a test program and this aspect of process development is also discussed with reference to the kind of equipment and experimental practices that have been shown to produce results consistent with the objectives. WHERE TO BEGIN? At the inception of a project much information is developed on the variables of the leach process and indeed in some instances the type of leach that best suits the ore to be treated is the subject of intense investigation (Wadsworth 1983). The decision to treat the leach solution by solvent extraction focuses attention on the selection of the extractant most suited to the nature of the chemical composition of the solution. A laboratory screening program will probably need to be arranged in order to assist in narrowing the options and the following is suggested for this initial screening. Selection of a Representative Leach Solution This is preferably obtained from leaching a representative sample of the ore under conditions likely to pertain in the commercial leach circuit. As the conceptualized circuit flow sheet will undoubtedly involve the recycle of aqueous solutions via the leach, then it is desirable to know the nature of and the likely level of the impurity ions in the solution as well as the concentration of copper. The other most important parameter that is required is the free acid (Anon, Acorga Analytical Method) content of the solution. As a rule of thumb, it is always true that recovery across SX is maximized as the pH of the leach solution rises. Whilst a high pH may be desirable for SX recovery, it is not always desirable for the pH (or more correctly, the free acid) of the leach to rise too high. The working range, therefore, tends to be between 1.5-2.5 pH. At an early stage in process development it is likely that a number of ill-defined conditions will exist, making it difficult to decide on typical leach conditions in which case the screening tests should be carried out using a synthetic leach solution prepared from laboratory chemicals. In doing this the copper and free content should be carefully controlled along with the appropriate addition of major impurity ions as their sulphate salts. 25.1-THE PURCHASING FUNCTION The word "purchase" means "to obtain by paying money or its equivalent; to buy for a price." This definition is all too simple to properly describe the word "purchase." One should consider the basic objectives of purchasing-to procure the right material, of the right quality, in the right quantity, at the right time, from the right source at the right price. Here it should be noted that in purchasing it is recognized that the best quality or grade of materials may be the only grade to purchase for a specific job. However. there are other jobs where the medium, standard or poor grade of materials is the right quality, as the lesser grade will perform adequately. In some companies the purchasing department makes the decision as to the right quality, while in others this function is shared with other departments. Years ago in business the owners controlled the purchase of required materials and services by performing the task themselves. The owners obtained the type materials and services they needed and paid the price demanded. This function was performed along with all the other duties requisite to the owner of a business, namely, clerical, hiring and firing of personnel, financial management, etc. As companies grew in size, clerical duties were assigned to other personnel and the owner usually retained the purchasing authority. This same division exists today in many small companies. However, in the larger companies, the purchasing function has been assigned to a separate department. Importance of the Purchasing Function-The larger the company the greater the need for a separate department to perform the purchasing function. Today the purchasing agent for most larger progressive companies has policy-making authority. Therefore, it is reasonable for him to report to the president or vice president of his company. Studies of several hundred companies show the purchasing department head reporting to top management 87.5% of the time. This fact in itself is indicative of the importance of recognizing that effective purchasing requires a department staffed with specialists in the field of procurement with knowledge and experience sufficient to perform in today's complicated business atmosphere. In the manufacturing field it is a common axiom that usually half of the company's dollar expenditures are for materials. If a purchasing department functions properly and the right product or service is purchased and a savings accomplished, the contribution to the net profit of the company is much greater, as opposed to sale dollars, where only a small portion is carried forward to net profit. Thus, the importance of the purchasing department and the contribution it can make to the success of the company are obvious. 25.1.1-THE PURCHASING FUNCTION 1. Existing reports on the effects of mine subsidence on water wells and springs appear to be inconsistent. Some report quick and complete recoveries to pre-mining conditions while others indicate long-term or permanent effects. It is clear that topographic and geological factors as well as precise position with regard to the mine are important in determining probable effects of subsidence on aquifers. Ridgetop aquifers which are well above regional base-level are much more susceptible to disturbance by mining activities than those located topographically lower. Effects seen are attributed largely to increased permeability, both horizontal and vertical. of the aquifer rocks. The deeper aquifers usually show short term losses or water-table declines. but the effects on the ridge-top aquifers persist for longer periods or may be permanent. Subsidence enhances permeability. so that infiltrating water moves much faster to lower levels. causing pond and stream losses and declining levels in wells as well as declining flows of springs of the higher aquifers, while increasing levels and flows of the lower aquifers. Additional effects are shifts of spring locations caused by minor tilts due to differential subsidence and redirection of shallow flows by changes of horizontal fracture permeability. These effects are seen as mining of a panel progresses beneath the site. and are often repeated when adjacent panel mining fronts pass the site. Analysis of water well level and spring flow records indicates that the effects are greatest at the edges of longwall panels in the tensional regime. These effects are amplified for locations close to topographically steep terrain and in close proximity to fracture traces mapped from medium-to small-scale aerial images.

"The Doha Metro Project is one of the most relevant ongoing tunneling projects. The whole project consists of about 100 km of tunnels with 21 EPB TBMs working in the same period. Due to the variability of the geological formations, the soil conditioning is a relevant aspect of this project because the parameters should be frequently adjusted to achieve the best performances of the TBMs. The study of the soil conditioning has been carried out accurately to obtain the best results on site. The study of the geotechnical data, the choice of the most suitable foaming agents and polymers and the laboratory study of the soil conditioning has been a fundamental part of the job. The application of the soil conditioning products on site with the analysis of the TBM data have confirmed the preliminary study results with some correlation between the features of the ground and the soil conditioning parameters to be used. INTRODUCTION Phase 1 of the Doha Metro Underground project is composed by 3 lines able to bring passengers to all the points of interest in the Qatar capital city. The Red Line, also called coastal line, connects the north of the city to the south, and to the new Hamad International Airport, following the coast line. The Golden Line, called Historic Line, will connect the southern area of Doha to the “Aspire zone” the area of the city where many state of the art sport centers are located, passing through the old city center. The Green Line, named education line, will connect the old city center to the Doha Education City. All the lines are realized with 2 tubes, single track. The whole underground project is realized with 21 TBMs, excavation diameter of 7.10 m. The project has been divided in 4 packages, for a total excavation length of more than 100 km. The need to underpass roads, existing buildings, and to excavate, in some areas, at less than 100 m from the coast line, forced the choice of a tunneling system with Earth Pressure Balance (EPB), that involves in the project another fundamental aspect of this tunneling system: the soil conditioning. The soil conditioning has multiples functions in the EPB system such as to make the soil suitable to properly apply the pressure on the tunnel face and to be extracted effectively with the screw conveyor. To properly study this topic it was necessary to study the geological formations to be excavated, the hydrogeological conditions of the underground, the foam injection systems of the EPB TBMs and to perform specific tests to evaluate a suitable conditioning to be verified and adjusted during the real scale application."

INTRODUCTION This work is a continuation of the preparatory study by Rustan and Stöckel 1979 (3) and (4) of the possibilities to introduce automatic mine ventilation in Swedish mines and construction works. The preparatory study has been financed by the Swedish Board of Technical Development. In the study it was recommended that an automatic step by step control of the fans near the working place due to diesel exhaust emission would be the best solution. A more advanced alternative would be to regulate the fresh air continuously in proportion to the contamination. The latter alternative has been studied by Boliden Mineral Co in the Udden mine. In this study it was found that the air supply could be regulated continuously but it was very important where the sensors feeling the contamination were placed. An intense study of the environment underground is now being planned by our division together with specialists from the National Board of Health and Safety, The Swedish Work Environment Fund, LKAB and the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. Different gases, radon, dust, airspeed, moisture temperature and pressure is planned to be measured continuously and correlation between the parameters is going to be established to decide the best measurement parameters for regulating the system. The best situation of sensors is also going to be studied. Despite this work hasn't been done yet this paper covers some of the problems which could be encounted with continuous regulation. In this report the environment has been studied during the test with step by step regulation of fans by radio. Diesel vehicles are the largest polluters under ground in Swedish mines and we have therefore suggested that the large diesel vehicles should regulate the fans. The goal of this study has therefore been to find how active diesel vehicles should be able to start and stop gallery fans at both intake and return air. In this paper different methods for activating fans are discussed. Then the best methods are chosen and tested in the mine. In this study we have found that changes of temperature is a cheap and effective method to start and stop cross cut fans in sublevel caving and radio signals seem to be an attractive system for start and stop of gallery fans. This work has been done in close collaboration between LKAB in Kiruna and the University of Luleå - Division of Electronics and Division of Mining and Rock Excavation. A reference group for the project has been established with ventilation experts from the mines, representatives for the local mine worker's unions and authorities from the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. VENTILATION SYSTEM STUDIED In the project the ventilation system at LKAB in Kiruna has been studied. The mining method used is sublevel caving with 9-13 m slice height. The air is heated winter time over ground by hot water heat exchanger. The main fans are pushing air down to a main distribution level along the 4000 m long and about 100 m wide orebody. From the distribution level, air is taken through shafts down to the sublevels, where it is pushed through the levels by local gallery fans on both intake and return side, see fig 1. The air ( ~ 8 m3/s) is moving freely through the gallery head. The cross cuts are ventilated with smaller fans, diameter 500 mm, and flexible duct, see fig 2. The aim of this study has been to study how to start and stop gallery- and cross fans and examine the environment when the fans are stopped . In Sweden there are no regulations telling that a minimum of air amount must be supplied. Instead the hygienic limits must be fullfilled.

Jade is a commercial term encompassing green, white, black or yellow-brown jadeitite and nephrite. Jadeitite consists of Na-rich pyroxene, whereas nephrite consists of prismatic to acicular amphiboles of the tremolite-actinolite series forming bundles that are randomly oriented and interlocked. Nephrite is tougher (harder to break) than jadeitite. Its fracture strength is about 200 MN/m2 whereas that of jadeitite is about 100 MN/m2. On the other hand, jadeitite has a higher hardness (7 compared to 6.5 on the Mohs scale). There are over fifty known nephrite occurrences in British Columbia (B.C.). These occurrences consist of individual blocks, boulder fields, talus blocks and in situ occurrences. Most of the in situ occurrences are lens or cigar shaped. They occur at, or near the contact of ultramafic/mafic rocks (mainly serpentinites) with cherts, and other metasedimentary or igneous felsic rocks of Mississippian to Jurassic oceanic terranes such as Cache Creek and Slide Mountain. These contacts are commonly interpreted as shear/fault related. In general, it is believed that the B.C. nephrite formed by metasomatic exchange between ultramafic and silica-bearing rocks. Impurities in B.C. nephrite are spinel group minerals (chromite, magnetite, picolite), diopside, uvarovite, titanite, chlorite, and talc. Jadeitite is slightly denser than nephrite and good quality material sinks in methyl iodine. There are no known jadeitite occurrences of economic interest in B.C., but there are at least four geographic areas where favorable lithologies, and metamorphic conditions (Pn) required for the formation of jadeitite coincide. These are Bridge River, Pinchi Lake, Dease Lake, and Jennings River. These areas are known to contain small concentrations of jadeite, or are characterized by blueschist or eclogite-grade metamorphic conditions. Rhodonite and pyroxmangite are MnSi03 polymorphs. These minerals are pyroxenoids and are macroscopically and microscopically very similar. For brevity, both are grouped together under the term "rhodonite". Most of the B.C. occurrences are hosted by late Paleozoic chert sequences and are lens shaped and concordant. The common association of rhodonite with iron formations, jasperoids, and/or volcanogenic sulphide deposits in southwestern B.C. permits the delineation of favorable horizons using magnetic or electro-magnetic geophysical methods. Geographic associations between manganese showings and sulphide deposits, and the hydrothermal chemical signature of the rhodonite occurrences from this area, suggest a genetic link between rhodonite and volcanogenic sulphide deposits. The typical rhodonite rocks consist of rhodonite, pyroxmangite, neotocite, black amorphous Mn-oxides, Mn-bearing garnet, ± epidote, ±chlorite, ±rhodochrosite, ± parakutnah-orite, ± Mn-bearing calcite, ± iron oxides and hydroxides. Garnet ± epidote forms yellow patches and layers within the rhodonite. Within some of the rhodonite occurrences, the garnet is altered to chlorite. Rhodonite-bearing rock is commonly cross cut by secondary manganese oxide veins, creating a characteristic web-like texture. In several localities, the contorted bedding planes are readily recognized. Mn-calcite and quartz also crosscut rhodonite. Rhodonite deposits hosted by high grade metamorphic rocks may contain pyroxmangite. Rhodonite is an important gemstone and ornamental stone in B.C., second only to nephrite in dollar value. B.C. nephrite and rhodonite have been used for the past 100 years in local jewelry and ornamental applications. More recently they have been used in table tops, and they have potential as upscale materials in tile-making. There may be a market for tiles made from lower grade materials that were previously extracted and stockpiled. The prices of nephrite, jadeitite, and rhodonite vary widely with quality, but gem and ornamental grade stones are relatively highly priced materials and they trade world-wide.

Asbestos analysis is conceptually simple. The objective, in most environmental analyses, is to determine the number of asbestos fibers per unit area or volume in a sample. The sample may be a consumer product, an ambient air sample, or a water sample. This determination is complicated by several factors: (1) sample collection and preparation, (2) counting techniques, and (3) operational definitions of asbestos in use. Three different definitions have been used in the study of environmental samples and are summarized in Table 1. The analytical procedure and detail required in the analysis vary with the definition of asbestos. Accordingly, this may be the only type of environmental analysis where the definition of a substance dictates the choice of analytical methods, and the rigor demanded of the analysis. Lead, arsenic, or beryllium are sub- stances having a constant definition and the method of analysis chosen depends on the concentration and precision required. However, the meaning of the term asbestos fiber is dependent on the eye of the beholder. Macroscopically, asbestos has certain physical properties that make it highly useful. Rockforming minerals do not display similar characteristics. Now, the question arises as to how three definitions of asbestos came into being. This is a result of two factors: (1) the definition of asbestos on any scale intrinsically involves the morphology or shape of the material, and (2) the advent of the transmission electron microscope permits detection of asbestos fibers and other mineral fragments in a size range where the physical properties of asbestos such as tensile strength, flexibility, or thermal resistance are difficult, if not impossible, to measure. There is a good deal of controversy about which definition is most appropriate for regulatory purposes because of a lack of appropriate health effects data (Cooper, 1978). Most differences of opinion center on the questions surrounding the following: 11 Morphology-Is a 3:l aspect ratio an appropriate medical or physical lower limit for the definition of an asbestos fiber? 2) Length-Are asbestos fibers shorter than some arbitrary length (5 pm) as hazardous as longer fibers? 3) Mineralogy-Is the mineralogical distinction between asbestos and nonasbestos minerals medically significant? While these questions are directly resolvable only with the biological and health effects data, ultimately such data reflects the ability of analytical procedures to fully characterize the materials used in health effects studies on animal models, and to monitor the exposure to particulates with different physical attributes in the workplace or community (Cooper, 1978). The following sections outline the analytical problems involved in distinguishing the asbestos and nonasbestos varieties of the same mineral; the analytical procedures available for identifying asbestos and measuring its concentration in environmental samples; the ability of these methods to distinguish asbestos fibers from nonasbestos particles; and their precision and reproducibility. Finally, we suggest some future directions in terms of definition and procedure that would greatly improve the quality of such analyses. ASBESTOS VS. A performance study of oxygen self-rescuers of varying durations from the United States and other countries was undertaken as an assessment of present worldwide technology. The apparatus were tested on a Breathing and Metabolic Simulator in the Life Support laboratories of the Bureau's Pitts- burgh Research Center. Parameters monitored during the testing were inhaled levels of C02, 02, inhaled gas temperature, and breathing resistance. The metabolic demand placed on the apparatus represented the average demand of the 50th percentile miner performing a 60-min man-test 4, as described in 30 CFR 11H. Results presented include apparatus service life and subjective comments as well as averages and peaks of monitored parameters.

Inco Limited operates 11 underground mines in the Sudbury District. The mines are located on the rim of the Sudbury Basin, an oval with the axis in the range of 27 and 60 km. The ore dips to at least 3000 m below surface. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper. Total ore production from underground is in excess of 55,000 tons per day. Over 40 surface fans have been installed since the late 1960's. All of the fans are adjustable pitch, axial flow units. A major factor influencing ventilation design in the last 30 years has been the introduction of diesel equipment underground. Volumes per fan have ranged from 60 to 330 (cubic metres per second), with motors from 100 to 2500 hp. Fans of the axial flow type have been in common use for main fan installations at Canadian mines for many years. The standard arrangement has been to mount these fans horizontally, i.e. with the fan shaft and the long axis of the housing horizontal. This is a natural arrangement for an underground fan, but for a surface installation, a vertically mounted fan has definite advantages. The surface area taken up by a typical vertical fan installation is generally about one quarter of that with a horizontal fan of the same capacity. (1) This is not a problem with isolated fans and flat surface outcrop sites, but where the installation is to be near existing buildings, or where there are poor surface soil conditions, space and cost considerations greatly favour vertical fans. MAIN FANS INSTALLED There are 43 main surface fans in operation at 11 mines. Twenty-seven of these fans are supply units, and 75% of them are vertical installation. The remaining 16 units are main surface exhaust fans, with predominantly horizontal installation. Within the last five years, some 20 main booster fans have been installed underground at several mines. Axial flow fans, with adjustable pitch blades, are used for both surface and underground installations. Exhaust fans are equipped with stainless steel or cast aluminum blades. Main underground fans are arranged horizontally and the majority of them have a floating shaft between the fan shaft and the motor. (2) The size of the fans in service varies from 1.8 m to 5 m in diameter, with the majority ranging from 1.8 to 2.5 m. The pressure produced by these fans varies from 0.25 kPa to 2.0 kPa. At Inco Limited, two main fans in parallel are preferred, rather than a single fan, so that if one fan fails, the remaining fan can still supply up to 70% of normal air quantities, while the damaged fan is repaired. This requires closure doors on each of the fans so the fan can be isolated in case of failure. It is more expensive than a single fan, but results in less production interruptions. The fan installations are well away from sharp inlet and outlet bends. FAN DESIGN INTEGRITY Both the mine operator and the fan manufacturer must understand that the main fan is critical to the mine operation, and that everything technically possible must be done in design and manufacture to ensure the highest degree of reliability. Some of the design parameters and criteria, based on Inco experience, are outlined and discussed below. RESONANT FREQUENCIES AND HOUSING MODEL ANALYSIS Any fan assembly will have many different resonant frequencies. It is a challenge to the designer to arrive at a design in which forcing frequencies do not coincide with any of these resonant frequencies to produce unacceptable vibration levels in operation. Finite element analysis is a useful tool that can be used to identify the most critical of these, so that housing and blade stiffness can be adjusted to change any resonances that might be close to forcing frequencies. Shaft critical speeds should be at least 25% above the fan operating speed, and there should be sufficient separation between other resonant and forcing frequencies to avoid excitation that might result in high vibration levels. QUALITY ASSURANCE Radiographic Blade Examination Mine fan blades are normally cast in small lots. To ensure that the castings are sound, a full radiographic examination is recommended in the highly stressed lower 1/3 of the blade.

INTRODUCTION Uranium mining operations release radioactive materials into both air and water and generate large quantities of solid wastes containing low levels of radioactive materials. Solid wastes produced by mining operations remain on the surface at many inactive mining sites in the Western United States. These mining effluents may present a potential health and environmental hazard. Therefore, Congress, in Section 114(c) of the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act of 1978, instructed the Administrator of EPA to prepare a report identifying the location and potential health, safety, and environmental hazards of uranium mine wastes and to recommend a program to eliminate these hazards. Several facts and limitations helped shape the method and approach of the EPA study. Little information on uranium mines was available; measurement information that was available on uranium mine wastes was frequently influenced (biased) by nearby uranium mills; time and resources did not permit comprehensive field studies to provide additional data; and there are inherent variations between uranium mines and sites that complicate generic assessments of mine wastes. To accommodate these facts, the EPA developed conceptual models of uranium mines and made health and environmental projections from them. The models were based upon available data from the literature, supplemented with information from discussions with persons inside and outside the EPA, and by doing several short-term field studies in Texas, New Mexico, and Wyoming. When necessary, conservative (maximizing) assumptions were employed. This paper presents a brief account of a part of the EPA study dealing with the potential health and environmental effects caused by active surface and underground uranium mines. Airborne contaminants are emphasized, although solid and liquid effluents are also included. Due to the limited space, only the methods and parameters used and the results of the assessments will be presented here. Anyone interested in the source of the data used and the development of the parameters should refer to the EPA report (Blanchard et al., 1981). The occurrence and emissions of stable elements were included in the EPA report, however, due to space limitations and their apparent small impact, except for possibly at some specific mines, only radioactive sources will be included in this presentation. MODEL URANIUM MINES The model surface mine was located in the South Powder River Basin of Wyoming and the model underground mine was located in the Ambrosia Lake area of New Mexico. These are the prevalent type mines in those areas. The model mines were based on the average production parameters of the 63 open pit mines and the 256 underground mines that were operating in the United States in 1978 (Department of Energy, 1979) and on a report of an extensive study of open pit mines in Wyoming (Nielson et al., 1979). Information contained in environmental impact statements and in reports from federal and state agencies was also used. Parameters for the model mines are listed in Table 1. The surface mining scenario is that 7 pits are opened in the 17-year mine life with overburden from each successively mined pit used to backfill a previously completed pit, resulting in an equivalent of one pit of overburden (2.4 year production) stored on the surface. No backfilling is assumed at the underground mine. Overburden or waste rock, ore, and sub-ore are separated into separate piles that are either rectangular in shape with length twice the width or in the shape of a frustum of a regular cone. Both shapes have 45 degree sloping sides. To account for bulking, the volume of the material comprising the piles was considered to be 25% greater than the volume of material removed from the ground. It was assumed that dewatering was required at both mine sites. Wastewater discharge rates at the surface and underground mines were assumed to be 3.0 and 2.0 cu m per min, respectively. SOURCE TERMS The following radioactive contaminants at active uranium mines were assessed in the EPA report: 1. Radioactive particulates in a) wind suspended dust from waste rock (overburden) pile, sub-ore pile, ore stockpile, b) suspended dust from mining activities (rock breakage, loading and unloading ore and wastes), and c) vehicular dust, 2. Rn-222 emanation from waste rock (overburden) pile, sub-ore pile, ore stockpile, and mining activities, 3. Rn-222 emanation from mine surface areas, and 4. Radionuclides in wastewater discharged to land surface. Estimated average annual dust emissions (item 1 above) from the model mines are listed in Table 2. Emission factors and the assumptions used to estimate these dust emissions are described in detail in the EPA report. Radioactive source terms were computed for each of the sources; dust emissions were multiplied by the concentrations listed in Table 1

INTRODUCTION High energy breaking is an alternative to using ex¬plosives in underground secondary breaking operations. It also is a means of upgrading conventional hand-held breakers, manual sledge-hammer breaking, and scaling bar operations. Major areas of application are in sec¬ondary breaking over grizzlies and at drawpoints. Other applications include breaking down ripping lips in longwall seam mining, scaling in stopes and rooms, general demolition work, and roadway maintenance. There is considerable interest in high-energy impact breakers for use in primary ore breaking, but, as of 1977, all such applications have been only experimental (duToit, 1973; Joughin, 1976; Wayment and Grantmyre, 1976). EQUIPMENT Essentially, a high-energy impact hammer is a boom¬mounted pneumatically or hydraulically actuated breaker. The machine basically consists of a piston that oscillates in a housing and impacts the end of a tool or moil thrust against the rock. The force applied to the rock primarily depends upon the impact energy of the piston-the higher the impact or blow energy, the greater the force and, thus, the greater the rock break¬age. Among drill and breaker designers, a common expression for blow energy is "force of blow." Hand-held breakers are limited to blow energies of about 140 J (100 ft-lb), because the operator is unable to handle heavier machines efficiently or to absorb the recoil energy resulting from higher blow energies. How¬ever, these restrictions do not apply to boom mounted breakers; machines with blow energies on the order of 4000 J (3000 ft-lb) and higher are available commer¬cially for underground use. There is considerable evi¬dence to show that increasing the blow energy also in¬creases the efficiency of the breaking operation; i.e., more rock is broken per unit of energy expended (Grantmyre and Hawkes, 1975). Thus, there is a trend to higher blow-energy machines, particularly where high¬strength rocks are to be broken. In relation to rock breaking, the blow rate of boom¬mounted impact breakers is not as important as it is for rock drills. This is because the breaker must be moved over the work surface between blows. The blow rate is governed eventually by the power supply, and typical blow rates range between 200 and 600 blows per minute. As a general rule, light blow-energy machines have higher blow rates than heavier machines. Table 1 lists most of the boom-mounted impact breakers that were available commercially during 1977, and it gives details of the blow energies and machine weights. Restrictions are placed on the blow energy by the machine weight and size, and by the strength of the boom. Typically, boom-mounted impact hammers have a blow-energy to mass ratio of about 1.5, with lower values for lighter machines and higher values for heavier machines. In addition to supporting the hammer weight, the boom also has to absorb the recoil energy of the blow, which can be on the order of 1400 J (1000 ft-lb) for large hammers operating in a horizontal mode. Interesting exceptions to the general run of impactors are the Joy HEFTI hydraulic hammers. In these machines, the piston impacts onto a fluid cushion that is positioned between the piston and the impact tool. This approach allows very high piston velocities, over 30 m/s (100 fps), to be used without the risk of break¬ing the piston or impact tool. Steel on steel impacts must be limited to impact velocities of about 10 m/s (35 fps) due to the high impact stresses generated; thus, increased blow energies can be achieved only by increas¬ing the piston size. The Joy 514 HEFTI®, listed in Table 1, has a blow energy of 27 100 J (20,000 ft-lb), but, as of 1977, the machine has been used underground only on an experimental basis. Using a fluid cushion between the piston and the impact tool allows the use of light pistons, reducing the overall machine weight. The recoil energy, which must be absorbed by the boom for a given blow energy, is directly proportional to the piston to machine mass ratio, and operating with light pistons provides an addi¬tional benefit in reducing the requisite boom size. Both pneumatic and hydraulic hammers are avail¬able commercially. Although hydraulic hammers are a relatively recent development, they already outnumber the pneumatic machines in use. INTRODUCTION In this chapter, the term "down-the-hole drill" (DTH drill) is used as a generic name that encompasses the various trade names and other references such as "downhole drill," "in-the-hole drill," etc. This chapter is limited to a description of DTH drills used in stoping large underground ore bodies. DTH drills differ from conventional drills by virtue of the placement of the drill in the drill string. The DTH drill follows immediately behind the bit into the hole, rather than remaining on the feed as with ordinary drifters. Thus, no energy is dissipated through the steel or couplings, and the penetration rate is nearly constant, regardless of the depth of the hole. Since the drill must operate on compressed air and tolerates only small amounts of water, cuttings are flushed either by air with water-mist injection or by standard mine air with a dust collector at the collar. HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT Mine managers have long known the economies enjoyed by quarry and open-pit operators in producing large quantities of ore. The savings are due primarily to the availability of massive equipment, capable of drilling large blastholes to reduce the amount of drilling, increase the fragmentation, reduce secondary blasting, and im¬prove the flow of the product. In an attempt to reduce underground mining costs, various methods are used for long-hole drilling, includ¬ing standard pneumatic percussion drifters and diamond drills. These systems have their shortcomings; percus¬sion drills are limited to small hole sizes and they ex¬perience excessive deviation and significant loss of energy with increased depth. The diamond drills provide deeper and straighter holes, but only at high cost. Both systems suffer from high noise levels, low penetration rates, and poor explosives distribution, among other problems. When the mining companies approached the drill manufacturers for a compact and portable large-hole jumbo for underground use, they specified not more than 1 % deviation on 60 m (200 ft) of vertical hole and a penetration rate of 15 m/h (50 fph). On Dec. 23, 1960, a test unit was placed in service in Montana and met the performance criteria. Though lacking the so¬phisticated features available today, the economies of surface blasting were brought underground. Unfortunately, the first system did not gain immedi¬ate acceptance in the industry. Among the factors con¬tributing to its demise were resistance to change, the need to alter development methods for the ore bodies, and a lack of flexibility in moving the rig from setup to setup and from level to level. In 1972, the mining industry again challenged the drill manufacturers to provide a workable jumbo that would combine compactness, ease of maintenance, relia¬bility, and efficiency, all on a self-propelled chassis. The manufacturers responded by providing improved jumbos, which have been accepted with enthusiasm throughout the mining industry. Today's DTH jumbos are capable of drilling from 100 to 200 mm (4 to 8 in.) diam holes that can be reamed to even larger diameters. The holes can be drilled to depths of 150 m (500 ft), depending upon ground conditions and the capability of the jumbo to retrieve the steel and drill. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical DTH jumbo. APPLICATIONS The uses to which DTH drill jumbos have been put are quite numerous, with new uses being found regularly. For convenience, these uses may be classified as primary blastholes and nonblasting holes. Primary Blastholes The original purpose for the development of the DTH jumbo was for drilling primary blastholes that could be mined by open-stope methods. Prior to the advent of the DTH jumbo, extensive development was required before production drilling could begin. Sub¬levels were required to allow access for column-and-arm stopers or ring/fan jumbos, to the extent necessary based on the effective penetration of the chosen machine. With the DTH jumbo, the mine engineer is able to reduce preproduction time and development costs. How¬ever, the most significant saving results from an im¬proved cost per ton of broken ore in the production phase. To utilize a DTH system, only a top heading and drawpoints are necessary. The top heading can be the width of the ore body with a 3.7-m (12-ft) back. A drop-raise pattern is drilled and shot to begin the stoping operation, providing a free face for subsequent blasting. A typical layout is illustrated in Fig. 2. The advantages of this system include: 1) Drilling and blasting are independent operations, and blasting can be performed at a rate congruous with the mine's ton-per-day capacity. 2) The development layout is simplified. 3) Good explosive distribution is achieved, provid¬ing more uniform fragmentation. 4) Environmental conditions for operators are im¬proved, including improved safety with all work directed downward (not overhead), lower noise levels, little fog, and a reduced dust count. 5) Improved production per manshift. 6) Simplified and easier operator work cycles. 7) Reduced cost per ton of product. 8) Fewer holes lost due to ground shifts. Nonblasting Holes With the introduction of the compact DTH jumbos, other practical uses became apparent, including the drilling of: 1) Holes for sand fill, from level to level and from level to stope. 2) Drain and dewatering holes. 3) Power and communications cable holes.

HINDERED SETTLING CONCENTRATION In the free settling of mineral particles in a liquid, the falling particles are at a distance from each other so that no particle is affected by its neighbor. In hindered settling, the concentration of particles is sufficiently high so that each particle is affected by its proximity to other particles in the suspension. Richards and Locke86 have described the hindered settling phenomenon as the condition “.. where particles of mixed sizes, shapes and densities in a crowded mass, yet free to move along themselves, are sorted in a rising current of water, the velocity of which is much less than the free-falling velocity of the particles but yet fast enough so the particles are in motion." This is the condition normally encountered in mineral con¬centration processes. The well known Newton equation for free settling of coarse (ap proximately +10-mesh, 1/16-in. or -- 2000-µm) spherical particles is:87 where v," is free settling velocity, cm/sec; p' is density of the fluid; p is density of the particle, g/cm3; d is particle diameter, cm; g is acceleration due to gravity, cm/sec2; and Q is coefficient of resistance, dimensionless, ~0.4. For the settling of fine spheres in water (approximately 150 mesh or 100 µm) the equation of Stokes pertains:87 where µ is viscosity of the fluid in poises and the other symbols have the same meaning as those in Eq. 1. For particles whose size lies between about 10 mesh (--2000 µm) and 150 mesh (100 µm), their settling velocity can be determined from experimental data. These data are available in convenient form in the text by Taggart88 based on the original work of Richards. Alternatively, a Reynolds number-coefficient of resistance plot may be used to determine the settling rate of such particles.87 The settling rate of spherical particles under hindered settling conditions can also be calculated from Eqs. I and 2 by replacing p', the density of the fluid, by p" the apparent density of the suspen¬sion. The concentration of particles in the fluid thus imparts an appar¬ent density to the composite fluid or suspension greater than that of the liquid alone, resulting in a buoyant effect on the larger particles. Particle shape affects the settling rate of both coarse and fine particles. The general effect is to reduce their settling velocities and the effect is greater for coarse particles and for those settling under hindered settling conditions than for fine particles or free settling ones. For two particles of differing densities but settling at the same velocity under Newtonian conditions, the ratio of their diameters from Eq. 1, called the free settling ratio is: where L signifies the lighter particle and H, the heavier particle. Under Stokesian conditions the exponent would be 0.5. For hindered settling conditions the fluid density p' is replaced by the apparent density of the suspension, p", to obtain a generalized equation for the hindered settling ratio: assuming both particles settle in approximately the same regime. The free settling ratio as given by Eq. 3 has been called by Taggart88 the "concentration criterion" and is used to predict the effectiveness of any gravity concentration process (see Introduction to this section). Based on Eqs. 3 and 4, if two particles of densities pH and p,, settle at the same velocity, the diameter of the lighter particle will be larger than that of the heavier particle. For example, in the case of galena (pH = 7.5) and quartz (pL = 2.65) settling in water (p =1.0) under free settling, Newtonian conditions 3.9. Thus, a quartz particle nearly four times as large as a galena particle will settle at the same velocity. Any quartz particle just slightly less than four times the diameter of the largest galena particle may be separated from it. Under hindered settling, Newtonian condi¬tions in a suspension where p" = 1.65, dL/dH = 5.85 or any quartz particle just slightly less than about six times the largest galena particle may be separated from it. Reference to Eq. 4 indicates that a superior separation between two minerals of differing densities is favored by: (1) coarse particles settling under Newtonian conditions, (2) a large difference in (pa - PL), and (3) separation under hindered settling conditions where p" is high. Of course, there are practical limits to increasing p" excessively because at very high percent solids suspen¬sion fluidity would be lost and the hindered settling separation process defeated. Examples of hindered settling separators are the Dorrco-Fahren¬wald sizer,89 the Rheolaveur box 90 the Spitzkasten,89 and the Willoughby washer.91 These devices make a mineral separation on the basis of both specific gravity and size and all of them are essentially obsolete except for the Dorrco-Fahrenwald sizer and similar devices which still find application for the removal of coarse particles from a much finer particle assemblage and for preconcentration ahead of shaking tables. However, nearly all gravity concentration processes (jigs, tables, flowing film concentrators, heavy media separators) and many sizing devices (sizing classifiers, clarifiers, thickeners, hydrosepa¬rators) make use of the hindered settling phenomenon during the separation of particles. "INTRODUCTION The need for a new road crossing at Silvertown is the result of three key drivers:- •,Severe congestion and delay at the Blackwall Tunnel and surrounding road network; •,A lack of network resilience and reliability resulting from a lack of alternative road crossings in east London and the impacts of unplanned closures; and •,The need to support substantial economic development in east and south-east London (jobs and homes) These drivers directly informed the main objectives for a road-based river-crossing solution. The traffic-related problems at Blackwall Tunnel are long-standing and before Transport for London (TfL) assumed control for the strategic road network in London in 2000 the Department for Transport (formerly Dept of Transport) had investigated various relief options including a third tunnel bore and new bridge. This resulted in a new crossing alignment being safeguarded (by direction of the Secretary of State for Transport) and this was refreshed in 2001 in favor of TfL. In recent years (since 2009) TfL as part of the East London River Crossings Programme has undertaken detailed optioneering and feasibility work to address the above ‘need’. This led to the conclusion that a new road tunnel would offer the best solution in preference to bridge, ferry or demand management options. In 2012, in response to a formal request by the Mayor of London, the Secretary of State for Transport confirmed a new road crossing at Silvertown as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) by Section 35 direction under the Planning Act 2008. This NSIP designation meant that TfL as scheme promoter must comply with the National Rail and Road Networks National Policy Statement (NNNPS) and must seek the necessary powers to build and operate the crossing by means of a Development Consent Order (DCO) under the Planning Act 2008."

Silica in the form of sand and sandstone is one of the most common, and at the same time, unique industrial minerals. Found in every rock type of every geologic age and virtually everywhere in the world, silica is used in products that touch just about every aspect of daily life. Imagine a world in the 1990s without computer chips, fiber optics, or glass, and you have just begun to understand how important silica is to the quality of life we enjoy. The elements silicon (Si) and oxygen (0) comprise roughly 60% of the earth's lithosphere to a depth of about 16 km. The crystal structure of silicon dioxide consists of one atom of silicon bonded to four surrounding atoms of oxygen to form a three-dimensional network of SiO, tetrahedra. This network makes up the mineral quartz (Murphy and Henderson, 1983), the most common detrital mineral in most sandstones. Quartz is also a major constituent of many igneous and metamorphic rocks and is widespread as a siliceous cementing agent in various rock types. Although quartz is common, sandstones, quartzites, and pegmatites and the unconsolidated sediments derived from them that have a silica content high enough and pure enough to meet today's market demands for quality and consistency are not common. USES AND SPECIFICATIONS Silica sand that is mined and processed for industrial uses must conform to the chemical and physical specifications set by customers. In the United States almost half of the silica sand produced is used in the manufacture of glass. Other important products include foundry sand, ground silica, blasting sand, and fracturing sand. Glass Sand Silica is the principal glass-forming oxide in a glass batch. Glass manufacturers develop model specifications for each source of silica sand used. These specifications broadly define the limits and ranges for chemical and physical properties of the sand and are used by the manufacturer in calculating the desired batch mix or formula. Some specifications may be critical to a glassmaker and require very stringent limits on the quantity of impurities in the sand. For example, the total iron oxide content of a batch is extremely crucial when making white or flint glasses (Mills, 1983). Iron is present in almost every raw material used in a glass batch and must be carefully controlled in order to obtain a consistent color in the finished product. It is difficult, however, for a raw material supplier to tightly control the chemistry of a naturally occurring material such as silica sand. To a great extent the commercial quality of a sand is determined by its geologic history. Realizing this, glass producers tailor their model specifications to each source of approved material. In general, a glass company is concerned most about the consistency of raw materials on a day-to-day basis. Soda-lime-silica glass was the earliest type of manmade glass (Baker-Can, 1967) and still accounts for most of the glass manufactured for commercial use today (Mills, 1983). It is relatively easy to melt and shape and is less expensive per ton to produce than most other types of glass (Baker-Can, 1967). Soda-lime-silica glass is used in fabricating containers, flat glass products, incandescent and fluorescent lamps, glass fiber, and many other products. Heavy minerals such as ilmenite, leucoxene, kyanite, and zircon are impurities on which strict limits are placed for a glass batch. Because of their refractory nature they either do not melt or only partially melt, which results in stones or feathers in finished glass. Aluminosilicates such as kyanite also contribute unwanted alumina to the batch as they partially melt. Limits are especially rigid for refractory mineral grains coarser than 0.60 to 0.425 mm (30 to 40 mesh).
