At Getchell, Nevada a thousand tons per day mill for extracting gold from an ore containing orpiment and realgar was operated several years until early 1967. A cyanide process with a roaster was used in the processing of the ore. Mill wastes were contained in tailings ponds, in which the concentration of arsenic, currently, is one per cent or higher, Studies were conducted determining the effect of the tailing wastes on the Upper Sonoran vegetation of the area. Grid and line-intercept techniques were employed to obtain botanical informatics of the area surrounding the tailings ponds. Data of the per cent ground cover, species frequency, and plant vitality as a function of distance from the tailings ponds was collected. The data was compared to other botanical data collected from a control site outside the influence of the tailings ponds. In an attempt to isolate naturally occurring factors for varying plant communities from hose induced by factors derived from the close proximity of the tailings, soil cores were taken along the line-intercepts at intervals of 30 meters. The cores were analyzed for several compounds and elements needed for growth, or known to inhibit growth. Specific physical parameters of the soil samples were also taken. The paper describes the impact made by mill wastes containing large amounts of arsenic on the Upper Sonoran vegetation of the Getchell region. Described in detail are the techniques used to make the correlations between the plant communities and the influences of mill wastes.

INTRODUCTION Iron is the world's most widely used metal and constitutes about 5% of the earth's crust. Iron ores are found widely distributed throughout the world. Because of its wide occurrence and relatively low value, an iron ore to be merchantable must contain a relatively high percentage of the metal to be considered as a source of iron. Few ores containing less than 25% iron would be considered as ore unless they existed in large amounts and could be concentrated very cheaply. The grade of the ore, the ease of concentration, and the transportation cost to market are fundamental considerations deter- mining its worth. Iron never occurs as a natural metal except in meteorites. Most iron ores occur as oxides, and to a lesser degree as carbonates. A small amount is recovered as a byproduct from iron sulfides. Iron ore must be reduced (oxygen removed) to metal for use. Iron is marketed in many forms and combinations, such as pig iron and a great variety of steels. Iron is practically never pure as marketed but contains varying amounts of carbon, phosphorus, sulfur, and alloying elements such as nickel, chromium, etc., all of which affect the physical proper- ties of the end product. Please note that in this section all analyses ore on a dry basis and all tonnage figures are on a long-ton basis of 2,240 lb unless otherwise noted.

"INTRODUCTION The existing Baltimore and Potomac (B&P) Tunnel accommodates Amtrak (National Railroad Passenger Corporation) and MARC (Maryland Rail Corporation) service between Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC and occasional local freight service. The Baltimore and Potomac Tunnel Replacement Project proposes new tunnel construction through Baltimore, Maryland along the Northeast Corridor (NEC) that maintains connections to Baltimore Pennsylvania Station. After the Replacement Project is constructed and operational, the disposition of the existing tunnel must be determined. The tunnel could be abandoned; however, considering its location in a congested downtown, alternative uses have been considered to take advantage of this unique piece of infrastructure by repurposing it. Alternative uses for the existing 140-year-old B&P Tunnel may end up being cost effective and should be considered, as the tunnel can be made accessible to construction crews for extended periods of time that will allow for efficient work activities unlike when it is fully operational. Possible alternatives include conversion for non-rail use, rehabilitation, or complete modernization for continued rail traffic. The following paper describes the four potential fates of the conceptual designs for the existing B&P Tunnel. The four concepts include: • No Build – rehabilitate to keep the tunnel operational. • Abandonment – complete or partial sealing of the tunnel. • Adaptive Re-Use –repurpose the tunnel with sustainable building practice. • Full Rehabilitation and Modernization – bring to current fire-life safety aspects. Of the four concepts, only the no build addresses maintaining the tunnel while it is under traffic. The remaining fates address the existing tunnel after the new tunnel is operational and railroad traffic has been diverted to it. Development of these conceptual designs were provided in a concept design study (Parsons Brinckerhoff/Parsons, 2015) that supports the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review process for the Project, which includes evaluation of possible alternative uses of the existing B&P Tunnel."

15.1 INTRODUCTION The mine development process, as discussed in Chapter 2, is a series of data gathering and analysis steps. As the mine development process proceeds, information about the geology, mineability, and metallurgy of a particular deposit is continually generated, along with environmental information regarding project permitting status. As data are obtained, checkpoint evaluations are typically conducted to determine the economic viability of the particular deposit. Although the project evaluation process was discussed at length in Chapter 2, a brief review of the process is presented here to "set the stage" for the discussion on economic analysis of heap leach projects. Figure 15.1 (MacKenzie, 1980) presents an overview of the sequential process of mine development. Once the deposit is discovered or acquired, an initial delineation program can be undertaken to expand the project's geologic, mining, and metallurgical data base. At the end of this initial program, the direction of the project is evaluated. The company can either abandon the project, postpone it, develop and mine it, or gather additional data in hopes of improving the project's economic viability. If the company continues gathering data, then another decision point and evaluation will be required. This process may continue until the company either decides to postpone the project or develop and mine it. A project may be postponed indefinitely, typically in hopes of improved metals prices. Certain holding costs, such as land or royalty payments, may be associated with postponement. In general, once a company goes through two evaluations, the project is less likely to be abandoned. For this discussion, it is assumed that the company will undertake initial, second, and third delineation programs to gather sufficient geologic, mining, metallurgical , and environmental data to justify a positive production decision from the second or third economic evaluation. The objectives of the first delineation program will be to confirm and expand upon the available information about the deposit. During the second delineation program, development funds should be directed toward identifying the critical project items (i .e., ore reserves, mineralogy, mineable grade, metallurgical recovery, etc.) that must be resolved before making the production decision. This second economic evaluation can be used to determine which metallurgical concept will be applied to the project: heap leach or a traditional agitation-type leach plant. If the proper work has solved key project concerns in the second program, a production decision may be made from that evaluation.

The WTBAL computer program for evaluating material balances for minerals processing flowsheets was developed at the MRC and has been in general use for a number of years. This paper reports on two enhancements to the basic MTBAL routine. The original program accounted for errors in the process measurements and used estimates of measurement variability to calculate stream weights. Unfortunately, the estimate of measurement variability was fixed over all streams. In the enhanced version of MATBAL, named IMTBL, the program equations and their solution procedure have been modified to allow the estimated variability in a process measurement to vary from stream to stream. The .second enhancement involves making MTBAL interactive. As such, the user now prescribes his information in an easy-to-use fashion in a conversational mode via a terminal. Finally, an assessment of the feasibility of implementing IMTBL on microcomputer systems will also be reported.

This chapter is concerned with the construction of the dynamic component of belt haulage systems. The dynamic system includes the belt line and tailpiece extension and retraction movements in a production system where mine management is continually placing the belt in the most effective operating position. Correct installation of the belt and tailpiece during an extension is very important for many performance reasons. Two of the most important reasons are to eliminate spillage and safely operate the belt line. This chapter is divided into three major discussions. The first discussion looks at analyzing the parameters of effective belt line construction. This includes a review of the parameters and management tools needed for proper scheduling of a move-up. The second major discussion topic centers on efficient procedures for a belt line extension. Topics such as site preparation, tailpiece breakdown and setup, stringing the belt line and structure, plus operating and maintenance tasks needed after the belt line is installed and running, are covered. The third discussion presents a list of conveyor and conveyor component manufacturers who provide services and products to the coal mining industry. Again, any discussion on underground haulage systems must generalize much of the site specific design approaches to be practical. This text will mention, where applicable, some of the alternatives available to construction engineers in designing belt line systems.

The Shebandowan mine and concentrator, with a capacity of 9072 t/week (10,000 st per week), was opened in 1972 after several years of environmental study and planning. The mine is located in a popular vacation cottage .area about 96 km (60 miles) west of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Undertaken before environmental assessment procedures had become an established requirement, Shebandowan is one of the first Canadian examples of effectively integrating environmental work into overall planning. Although it is an underground mine, many of the environmental considerations are common to open-pit operations, and hence, it provides a case history for the use of all mine planners. Computers can play a part in such studies by simulating the annual production of mine wastes, by on-line polling of environmental sensors and by processing sensor data. Early attention was focused on establishing base-line conditions in a two-year water quality monitoring program. Since production began, water quality monitoring has shown that mining has not caused any significant changes. However, mine drainage disposal arrangements had to be modified in the light of operating experience. There is no townsite associated with the mine, and workers commute from established municipalities. Harmonious relations have been achieved with local cottage residents after their initial fears were dispelled. Plans are ready to begin revegetating the tailings when a sufficient area of dry elevated tailings has been accumulated. Rehabilitation of the land disturbed during development was begun before start-up and was completed during initial operations.

Philippines is a country that is richly endowed in mineral wealth. In 1988, Climax Arimco Mining Corp. (CAMC) geologists found the Dinkidi porphyry gold-copper deposit in Nueva Vizcaya province. It is the most significant mineral discovery in that country in recent times. To date, the company has defined indicated resources of 124 Mt (136 million st) of 1-g/t (0.029-oz/st) gold and 0.4% copper. This includes a high-grade core of 7.9 Mt (8.7 million st) of 6-g/t (0.175-oz/st) gold equivalent. Total contained metal is 124.4 t (4 million oz) of gold and 499 kt (1.1 billion lb) of copper. Dinkidi's discovery resulted from initial geologic reconnaissance and recognition of the intrusive complex that is exposed at surface and anomalous in its topographic expression. This was followed by systematic exploration. This includes extensive gradient array induced polarization (IP), ground magnetics, geochemical sampling and diamond drilling. This later defined a further 16 satellite porphyry targets in the Didipio region. Climax was been granted a Financial and Technical Assistance Agreement contract with the Philippine government. It allows 100% foreign ownership of mining projects. After four years of negotiations, Climax was the first company to have such an application granted. Some 120 applications from numerous international mining companies are waiting for approval following implementation of new Philippine Mining Act of 1995. Exploration history Didipio is located 200 km (125 miles) north of Manila at an elevation of about 700 m (2,300 ft) in the remote Sierra Madre mountains. This region remains mostly unexplored. The property is accessed by 25 km (15 miles) of logging track from the town of Cabarroguis, Quirino. The area experiences an average rainfall of about 3,000 mm (118 in.) a year. Most of it falls during the July-to-November typhoon season. Didipio was first recognized as a gold province in the 1970s when native Ifugao and Ilongot hunters discovered alluvial gold in the region. The region had been prospected over the years by local companies. They were mostly prospecting for alluvial gold. However, in 1988, Climax Mining geologists identified the potential of an obscure razorback ridge protruding from the alluvial valley floor. This ridge, later named Dinkidi by Climax, was the site of several small- scale tunnels. Locals had mined narrow quartz stockwork veining and sluiced soft argillic alteration zones, using irrigation canals and sluice boxes to catch free gold.

INTRODUCTION Coal flotation is a fine cleaning process usually present in all but the older preparation plants. It is typically used to clean either the -28 mesh (-500 pm) or - 100 mesh (- 150 pm) raw coal fines, and it is the only commonly used preparation method that can effectively recover coal particles finer than, say, -200 mesh (74 pm). To place coal flotation into its proper context, it should be noted that the bulk of the raw coal sent to preparation plants is treated by gravity concentration. On a worldwide basis, from 0 to 40% of the raw feed to a preparation plant is treated by flotation, while in the US only about 10% of the raw coal feed is floated. Roughly, 50% of US preparation plants use flotation to process at least a portion of the raw coal feed, although most of the newer plants incorporate flotation into their flowsheet. Historically, the process has only been used to treat the raw coal fines naturally occurring after mining and a minimal amount of crushing at the preparation plant. This is in sharp contrast to ore flotation where, typically, the entire tonnage is first ground and then floated. As a consequence, of the approximately 500 Mt of raw coal treated by preparation in the US yearly, it is estimated that only about 40 Mt are sent to the flotation circuits (producing -30 Mt of clean product).'O1 This small tonnage compares with about 400 Mt of ores treated annually in the US by flotation. By analogy to ore flotation, where it is an effective, large tonnage, low cost, easy to operate process, its potential in coal preparation should be great. Reasons why it has not achieved a greater potential in coal preparation have been attributed by Aplan 102 to: 1. Indifferent results in removing sulfur and ash. 2. Difficulty in floating low rank and oxidized coals. 3. Inability to make clean separations with the finer sizes. 4.Inability to clean slurries with a high percentage of clay. 5. Problems with water chemistry. 6. Competition with effective, gravity coarse-cleaning methods. 7. Low value of coal historically. 8. Dewatering problems. 9. Transportation and storage problems with coal fines. 10. Marketing problems with coal fines. 11. Inadequate attention to the process in the plant. 12. Inefficient use of capital and operating monies. Inadequate attention to procedures, machines, and processes.

istorical records suggest that the gathering of geologic information in China began more than 2,000 years ago. Modern-day geological work in the nation started in the early part of this century but it progressed rather slowly. Before the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC), there were only 800 people engaged in geological work and only 200 trained geologists among them. According to Minerals and Mining in China, many accomplishments were achieved within China's mining industry during the period of years between 1949, the founding of modern China, and 1997. These include: ? The number of types of minerals with verified reserves increased from 18 (pre-Liberation) to 162 (today). ? Mineral deposit localities grew from 5,123 (pre-Liberation) to nearly 200,000 (today). Of these 200,000 localities, more than three-quarters have verified mineral reserves. ? Minerals extraction and processing contribute to 31 % of the total industrial output value of China (today). ? Regional geological maps at a scale of 1:1,000,000 covering the entire country have been completed, while regional geological and hydrogeological maps at a scale of 1:200,000 covering two-thirds of the country have also been finished (today). ? Before 1949, China was regarded as an oil-poor country. Since the 1950s, China has developed an extensive petrochemical industry. It is largely government-owned except for a limited number of joint ventures. The central government maintains active control over China's most productive fields, including the Daqing field in the Songliao Basin of northeastern China and the Shengli and Liaohe fields in the Bohai Basin of northeastern China. ? Employment in the minerals industry engaged in geological exploration increased from 800 (pre-Liberation) to 1 million (early this decade). The new report provides an overview of the current political and economic situation in China and discusses how this affects the minerals industry. China is in transition between a socialist planned economy and a market economy. This makes it difficult for non-Chinese to keep track of developments. Minerals and Mining in China is divided into 14 chapters that contain detailed statistics, including data on the geographical location and extent of known mineral reserves, production rates, local technical personnel, imports and exports. The report reveals which companies are already active in the area by profiling 50 major investment projects in China's metals and minerals industry. According to its author, China possesses one of the world's largest mining industries, ranking among the leading producers of several metallic and nonmetallic resources. The Chinese mining industry is extraordinarily complex. It has evolved into an overwhelmingly large bureaucracy that was, until the 1980s, shrouded from and misunderstood by the international community. To date, more than 160 types of minerals have been discovered in China. But a significant portion of the minerals and energy base remains largely unidentified and evaluated. And despite China's large reserves of mineral resources, with a population of more than 1.2 billion people, the country ranks among the lowest in the world in terms of proven reserves per capita. Cyclones have become standard unit operations in mineral processing for both dewatering mineral slurries and for making separations at given particle sizes. Conventional cyclones are normally able to make moderately sharp cuts. However, the limited ability to control water flow out of the apex means that cyclones have difficulty handling fluctuations in feed. Underflow-regulated cyclones are cyclones with a rubber boot attached to the underflow. This boot acts as a non-return valve and restricts flow out of the apex of a cyclone. Normally, this type of restriction on a cyclone causes severe difficulties in cyclone operation. However, by adding a siphon arm to the overflow, water flow can be controlled. The siphon arm creates a vacuum that reduces or eliminates the air core, permitting better control of the ratio of water flow out of the overflow and underflow. A Linatex-developed underflow-regulated cyclone was compared to a conventional cyclone for its ability to dewater a sand slurry. The underflow-regulated cyclone produced slurries with solids contents as high as 80% in the underflow. Conventional cyclones produced lower solids content in the underflow under similar conditions.

Multiple seam underground coal mining is ubiquitous in Appalachia. Many coal properties have from two to ten or more economically mineable coal seams. Because of the ability to penetrate 600-feet to 1,000-feet or deeper into the mountainside leaving panels of web pillars separated by barrier pillars, highwall mining is a hybrid between surface and underground mining. As a result, many of the ground control problems commonly associated with multiple seam underground mining exist with multiple seam highwall mining. These include: i) multiple seam interaction between web and barrier pillars in superjacent mines, ii) subsidence and caving propagating to overlying seams and mines, iii) pooled water and the potential for inundation resulting from a breakthrough between an active highwall mine and abandoned underground mines in the same or superjacent seams, iv) the presence of overlying or underlying mine workings where pillar columnization in the active mine is not possible, and v) the question of whether to mine ?top-down? or ?bottom-up.? Case histories are presented from southeast Ohio where the Middle Kittanning No. 6 and Lower Kittanning No. 5 seams are successfully highwall mined with 20-feet to 40-feet of largely shale interburden. A highwall miner was caught in a highwall collapse in the Middle Kittanning No. 6 seam when it was overmining auger workings in the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam. Multiple seam interaction caused by the overmining transferred overburden stress onto the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam. The overburden concentrated through web pillars initiated auger web pillar failure, resulting in roof collapse and subsidence in the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam that propagated up to the Middle Kittanning No. 6 seam. A second case history involves multiple seam highwall mining in southeast Kentucky. The A3 Rider, A3, B2, and C1 seams are being highwall mined around abandoned underground mines in the A3 and B2 seams and augering in the A3 Rider. Because of spoil storage constraints for the surface contour mines, the highwall miner follows the active pits in each seam so a standard sequence of ?top-down? or ?bottom-up mining does not exist.

INTRODUCTION The Wyodak Mine is located in the northern Powder River Basin of Wyoming and is thought to be the oldest continuously operating coal mine in the United States, having recorded yearly production since 1923. The mine has expanded over its 80-plus-year history from an underground room and pillar operation to a modem surface snip mine. Currently, the mine feeds four on-site power plants using conveyors, has a filly automated truck load-out, and ships coal by rail to nearby Wyoming power plants. Annual production of 4.8 MTFT is accomplished on a single-shift basis with 53 fill-time production, maintenance and administrative personnel. In 1990 a decision was made to modernize the coal feed system to the power plant complex with modular conveying equipment. The project involved constructing coal storage silos, overland conveyors, feeder breakers and modular conveyors to follow the mining benches. Total project cost in excess of $25 million was used to construe or commission: A 2,150-TPH 48-inch overland conveyor with horizontal curve A 2,150-TPH 48-inch plant feed conveyor 13 shuttle conveyors, each 150 feet in length 2 front-end loaders equipped with large coal buckets 2 crawler-mounted feeder breakers with compatible discharge conveyor 1 high-lift shuttle conveyor with adjustable discharge height 1 high-angle conveyor 2 4,500-ton coal silos with automated truck load- out capabilities. Conceptually, the plan was to develop 33 MTONS of reserve adjacent to the plant complex and use front-end loaders to tram ROM coal to in-pit feeder breakers. The primary crushing would reduce coal to 6-inch minus and feed through a series of shuttle conveyors to an overland supply conveyor. The overland conveyor would feed the secondary crusher, and the crushed product would be moved to any of four storage silos using conveyors. The in-pit crushing and conveying system is a unique fit for the power plants and provided many interesting challenges for the coal mine to overcome. System integration, maintenance windows, equipment availability and the like had a major role in engineering the system to a power plant complex having no emergency coal stock- pile and limited plant storage. In crediting the designers and operators, the in-pit conveying system at the Wyodak Mine has delivered coal to the power generators since 1994 with little or no downtime. ENGINEERING CONSIDERATIONS Yearly production for the mine is based on 3.5 MTPY which requires about 1,550 TPH on an 8 hour, one-shift- per-day, 5-days-per-week basis. Considering efficiencies for starting and stopping, crew transport, loader trams, and operational delays, a nominal conveyor feed rate of 2,150 TPH or 72% system utilization was used in engineering design application. This ton-per-hour basis is used to size and commission the remaining components of the in-pit system. Coal quality requirements also played a role in equipment selection. The mine reserve grades vertically and coal from Upper and Lower benches needed to be mixed in any given proportion. This required equipment to be filly variable and capable of producing all or part of the 2,150-ton-per-hour requirement. Bisecting the 80-foot- high coal face for quality required construction of a high lift module capable of reaching a single overland conveyor 40 to 50 feet above the pit floor. Designers built a high-lift, adjustable and portable module specific for this application Having two bench systems capable of each producing the required feed for the power plants required computerized control processes to control on-line production. RSLinx, RSLogix, and RSView were chosen as the communication and control software, and a Data Highway Plus serves as the communication backbone. Each of the two in-pit benches are controlled with a data center equipped with Allen Bradley 5-40 processors. This

The "Hormite Group" was proposed for palygorskite (attapulgite) and sepiolite for their complex magnesium silicate composition and elongate crystals (Martin-Vivaldi and Robertson, 1971). These minerals occur in close association with each other and more complex structural variations may exist (Bailey, 1972). In 1862 Savchenkov used the name palygorskite to describe a mineral from the Palygorsk locality (Hay, 1975), near the Ural Mountains. Ovecharenko and Kukovsky (1984) mention that when mountain leather deposits were prospected in the Palygorsk Division mine it was assumed this unusual mineral was a variety of asbestos. Early mineralogists used the terms "mountain cork" or "mountain leather" when referring to palygorskite. Robertson (1986) mentions that it appears palygorskite was known since Theophrastus&apos; time, ca. 314 BC. J. de Lapparent used "attapulgite" for clays from Attapulgus, GA, and Mormoiron, France, because he thought them different from palygorskite, but the two types were proved to be the same (Bailey et al., 1971). The name attapulgite is still used for the Florida and Georgia deposits when the crystal length to diameter ratio does not exceed 10:1(Merkl, 1989). Georgia palygorskite clays are of much shorter length compared to classic palygorskite. In 1847 Glocker first used the name sepiolite which was called "Meerschaum" by Werner (1788) and Hauy (1801) namedit "Ecume de Mer." Brochant (1802) described low density and white magnesium silicates adding the name Talcum Plasticum and Ecume de Mer. In the Meigs-Attapulgus-Quincy district palygorskite (attapulgite) commonly occurs in two distinct forms referred to as short length palygorskite (Meigs Member) and long length palygorskite (Dogtown Member) (Merkl, 1989). Long length palygorskite crystals (> 10 pm) are rarely observed in the Meigs and Dogtown Members, but when present are in association with dolomite crystals. The short length form is usually less than 2 pm in length and has a low magnesium content whereas the long length form has a high magnesium content and a length greater than 2 pm. The distinctions in morphology are not only important because of the relationship to the origin of the deposits, but also in relation to activity in causing membranolytic activity related to data on palygorskite samples from 9 locations ranging from relatively inert to active in work reported by Nolan et al. (1989). The > 10 pm lengths amounted to only 51 of 17,401 fibers sized. The shortest lengths (< 0.5 pm) were relatively inert. This study pointed out that surface activity, morphology, and chemical differences may be distinctly different within the definition of palygorskite, or for that matter for any individual mineral so that health and other properties must be measured because the name alone does not necessarily indicate uniformity. Palygorskite (attapulgite) fuller&apos;s earth was first sold for drilling mud in 1941. The market for this use expanded slowly and has maintained a level of 7 to 10% of the total US production during the last few years. Most of the fuller&apos;s earth sold for drilling mud comes from the southern part of the Meigs-Attapulgus-Quincy district of Georgia and Florida. Palygorskite clays produced in this area are superior to most other fuller&apos;s earth for mud used in drilling salt formations, but because of high water loss, they are inferior to bentonite where the rocks drilled contain no saltwater. According to Oulton (1965), more than 90 different grades of fuller&apos;s earth are produced. Some of these grades are used for pharmaceuticals designed to absorb toxins, bacteria, and alkaloids; for treatment of dysentery; for purifying water and dry cleaning fluids, dry cleaning powders and granules; for the manufacture of NCR (no carbon required) multiple copy paper; for the manufacture of wallpaper; and as extenders or fillers for plastic, paint, and putty. Fuller&apos;s earth mined near Ellenton, FL, was used for making lightweight aggregates for the construction of concrete barges during World War I1 (Calver, 1957). Still other uses of fuller&apos;s earth and its suitability for uses in new products are outlined by Haden, Jr., and Schwint (1967), Haden, Jr., (1972), and Haas (1970). One special use of fuller&apos;s earth is as a carrier of platinum catalysts that are made in the United Kingdom from sepiolite clays mined in Spain. Other uses of sepiolite fuller&apos;s earth (Chambers, 1959) are similar to those of the palygorskite (attapulgite) type mined in the United States.

Today&apos;s coal mines are turning more and more to belt haulage as the key system to transport coal out of the mine. The advantages of using belt for both intermediate and main haulage are numerous. Belts are reliable high capacity haulage mediums that can be utilized at low operating costs. They are adaptable to rolls in the coal seam and can handle relatively steep grades. They are not noisy, operate with a minimum amount of labor, and are easily extended and retracted. Belts require the least power of any haulage medium, are easily controlled by push- buttons and interlocks, and present low fire and safety hazards. Belt haulage can also be the largest source of operational problems for mine management when not installed correctly. This chapter and Chap. 6 concentrate on proper installation of both the static and dynamic components of efficient belt haulage. This chapter looks at the static system component, composed of the belt drive, its installation and operation, as well as belt takeup and transfer point construction. These components do not change readily over the life of the installation, hence the term static system. Chap. 6 discusses the dynamic system of belt line construction, which includes belt splicing, breaking down and reanchoring the tailpiece, and extending the belt line, plus operational and maintenance items for belt operation. This chapter is divided into three major topics. The first is a general discussion covering the points necessary for designing an efficient haulage system; the second looks at installing belt drives, head rollers, and takeups, and the third discussion centers on installing efficient and effective transfer points along the haulage system. Each will address the design and construction issues facing the engineer or construction supervisor in charge of installing the system. Before looking at the static system, it may be useful to review some of the basic design factors and considerations of all belt haulage systems. The material usually carried on an underground belt is a mixture of raw coal and rock, commonly known as run-of-mine (ROM) coal. This mixture has certain material characteristics that guide the mining engineer to the final and proper belt selection. The characteristics looked at most frequently are: 1) Angle of Repose is the angle at which the material will freely make a pile. Most ROM coal averages a 35"-39" angle of repose. 2) Angle of Surcharge is the angle a pile will assume on a moving conveyor. This ranges from 5" to 15" less than the angle of repose in most materials. For ROM coals, 25" is the average angle of surcharge. 3) Flowability, which determines the maxi- mum cross-sectional area needed to carry any given material on a belt. It is measured by the angles of repose and surcharge of a material and also serves as an index of the safe incline angle for the belt line. These characteristics, plus practical engineering research and development work are defined by an organization called the Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) for most bulk materials. CEMA also provides a code for each classified material depending on the characteristics above and the subjective considerations of the average size to be encountered, the abrasiveness of the material, and any miscellaneous characteristics (oil resistive, corrosive, etc.) which may be important. The opportunity for an exploration geologist to follow a successful exploration project through the feasibility, financing, construction, development, and exploitation phase is rare. In addition, it is not often that the exploration geologist can be present during the mining of a deposit to explain why certain actions were taken or interpretations made, and to find out how these interpretations turned out in actuality. At the Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos mine in New South Wales, Australia, mining has been- in progress for seven years and the writer of this chapter has been intimately associated with the project during the five years of exploration and seven years of exploitation. The Woodsreef mine has had major production problems, the majority of which have stemmed from the unique characteristics of the ore body and fiber. Because of the latter feature, much research has been undertaken by Woods- reef and other scientific organizations in Australia, England, and Canada regarding the Woodsreef fiber. The answers to some of the problems have negated some accepted concepts of asbestos ore milling and led to the development of new techniques. Some of these new techniques include the adoption of microscopic fiber counts as a routine procedure, the modification of accepted evaluation procedures, the development of new machines for dedusting fibers, and the recognition of a fiber with a unique milling behavior pattern and, possibly, properties. The problems experienced can be broadly divided into those associated with the geology and the physical properties of the fiber. It is possible that the same features may manifest themselves in other deposits around the world, and if they can be recognized during the exploration stages, a feasiblity evaluation may be just a little closer to the actual. The Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos deposit (latitude 30°24&apos; S, longitude 150°44&apos; E) is located 80 km north of Tamworth, NSW, Australia. The mine has been in production for six years and has a present scheduled mining rate of 33.11 Mt/y. An eight rock line mill treats an average of 7000 t/day, after beneficiation, and yields fiber grades in the range of group 4 to group 6 with some floats. The estimated re- serves of 30.56 Mt, with an ore to waste ratio of 1:3.0, are contained in two main zones that are designated the North and South zones. Mining started in the South Zone in 1972 and then, be- cause of the higher ore value, moved to the North Zone in 1975. Presently, there are two distinct open cuts referred to as the South and North pits that will eventually be worked together. The Woodsreef mine is owned by Woodsreef Mines Ltd. and is operated by Chrysotile Corp. of Australia Pty. Ltd., and is one of only two producing asbestos mines in Australia. The second mine is at Baryulgil, (latitude 29°13&apos; S, longitude 152°37&apos; E), and is operated by a subsidiary of Woodsreef Mines Ltd. This operation produces about 500 t/y for a captive market. An exploration program is being conducted in the area surrounding this small producer with a significant degree of success. The concepts developed during the exploitation of the Woodsreef deposit are being incorporated in the evaluation of the Baryulgil area, and if the Baryulgil deposit proves to be eco- nomic it is hoped that this approach will eliminate some of the major crises that have beset the production at Woodsreef during the first four years of operation. The recognition of perlite as a distinct volcanic glass, and of the arcuate fractures that often characterize these natural glasses, dates back at least to the late 19th century and perhaps into the 18th century (Howell, 1974). Some authors suggest that recognition of perlite dates considerably further into antiquity, perhaps to the 3rd century BC (Caley and Richards, 1956). Most recent definitions identify perlite by the presence of vit¬reous, pearly luster and by the presence of characteristic concentric or arcuate perlitic fractures. As discussed more fully below, arcuate fractures in perlite need not be megascopic. The textures of perlite which commonly occur in deposits range from dense to highly vesiculated to pumice-like. Thus, the classical definition of perlite is descriptively restrictive compared to the natural range of textures and neglects to address the issues of genetic origin and geologic occurrence. In spite of the petrological usage of the term perlite, the in¬troduction of expanded perlite aggregate into industrial markets caused the term to be applied as well to the lightweight, cellular aggregate that is produced through the rapid thermal expansion of milled perlite ore. Perlite is distinguished petrologically from other natural glasses by a silicic or rhyolitic composition by the presence of 2 to 5 wt% total chemical water held within the glass structure and often by the presence of pearly luster and onionskin-like perlitic fractures. Worldwide, occurrences are associated with Tertiary through early to middle Quaternary volcanics and with the glassy portions of silicic domes and flows, with vitric tephra, with the glassy chill margins of dikes and sills, and with the glassy portions of welded ash flow tuffs. Less commonly, perlite is reported in association with the glassy portions of volcanic plugs and lacco¬liths. The perlite carapaces that partially or fully comprise extru¬sive domes and flows are often thick and areally extensive, and thus provide commercially attractive targets for low cost open pit mining. Perlite tuffs and tephras are also important commercial sources. Mining costs are minimized by open pit quarrying and by either bulldozer ripping or blasting. Crushing and sizing facilities are generally close to the pits. Due to the low weight and large volume of expanded perlite, unexpanded perlite that has been crushed and sized is usually shipped nationwide directly to local markets where it is expanded and processed for distribution to end users. The vast majority of international trade is in unexpanded perlite. In the United States, the evolution of the expanded perlite industry can be traced to the late 1930s and early 1940s when expanded perlite aggregate was introduced into gypsum plaster and concrete markets as a substitute for vermiculite (Schundler, Jr., oral communication, 1991) and was promoted for use in a much broader spectrum of products (Howell, 1974). By the early 1950s, end user markets were well established and small expanders were numerous east of the Mississippi River. Today, mining and expan¬sion is undertaken throughout the world. Worldwide production of perlite is dominated by the former Soviet republics, the United States, and Greece. Total worldwide production of processed perlite during 1990 is estimated at roughly 1 778 000 tons (Davis, 1991). The physical properties of expanded perlite that give this prod¬uct unique commercial value include: low bulk density, chemical inertness, high insulating ability, nonflammability and fire resis¬tance, and its ability to retain water. These and other physical properties give expanded perlite value in such uses as: lightweight acoustical and thermal insulating aggregate; component in plaster, insulating cements and lightweight concrete; loose fill insulation; as aggregate in horticultural applications; and in milled form as filter aid. In the United States and Europe, the largest end use is within building construction products.

In the southern part ?f the Occidental Carpathians an iron ore body embedded in crystalline schist was exploited. The presence of minerals such as magnetite, pyrite, pyro-chorine, allanite, monazite and xenotime, which also include within their structure substituted thorium isomorphic, was pointed out. The iron ore was processed by crushing, grinding and magnetic separation in order to obtain magnetite concentrates. The environment was affected by pollution generated by the mining activities. In 1995 due to the economic reasons, it was decided to cease mining exploitation and remediate the area. The paper presents the ecological impact caused by mining activities on a number of environmental targets and the population. The pollution sources, namely sterile dumps and mine waters are characterized (from the physical, chemical and radiometric point of view); the pollution pathways and theirs effects on potential targets, namely soil, vegetation, hydrographic network and population are identified as well. The degree of pollution due to all sources was assessed and maps of pollution sources distribution were generated. The supplementary effective doses for the population were assessed using rigorous scenarios and considering all exposure pathways. The rehabilitation plan includes solutions for dumps geometrization, covering and revegetation as well as mine waters management.

The River Island mining site is located at approximately river mile (RM) 15 on the Clackamas River, a large gravel-bed river in northwest Oregon. During major flooding in February 1996, rapid channel change occurred. The natural process of meander cutoff, slowed for several years by dike construction, was accelerated by erosion into gravel extraction ponds on the inside of a meander bend during the flood. In a matter of hours, the river cut off a meander and began flowing through a series of gravel pits located on the inside of the meander bend. The cutoff resulted in a reduction in reach length of approximately 1,100 m. Erosion by bed lowering, knick point retreat and lateral erosion of upstream river banks occurred quickly. Within two days of the peak flow, 3.5 hectares of land and 105,500 m3 of gravel were eroded from the river bank just above the cutoff location. Much of this gravel moved a short distance downstream into the excavation. Reach slope increased from 0.0022 to approximately 0.0035 in the cutoff reach. Between 1996 and 2003, the knick point from the meander cutoff has migrated 2,290 m upstream, resulting in increased bed load transport, incision, and local lowering of the water table. In 1993, prior to the meander cutoff, transects were surveyed in the River Island reach upstream of the cutoff location. Resurvey of these transects and aerial photo analysis indicates that 96% of the knick point migration occurred during the first winter following meander cutoff. Connection of the flowing river to the off-channel ponds has had minimal effect on water temperatures in the mainstem Clackamas River. It is likely that this minimal change in temperature will decrease as ponds are isolated from active river flow by gravel bar deposition. Fish net-ting in spring 2002, suggests that salmonid use of the pond in the spring is minimal. The most abundant native species netted were large-scale sucker and northern pikeminnow. The most abundant non-native species netted was brown bullhead. Early regulation by state and federal agencies did not adequately evaluate potential impacts to the river and the floodplain; nor did it evaluate future impacts related to geomorphic processes and sediment transport. New permit evaluation methods, currently implemented by both Oregon and Washington, incorporate 1) river dynamism through historic river migration analysis; 2) stability of human structures in light of river dynamics; and 3) sediment transport and its impact on channel stability and dynamics. The gravel pit capture at River Island highlights the potential risks of mining in an active secondary channel of a large gravel-bed river. Mining deeper than the depth of the adjacent channel, within the active migration zone, may increase off-site impacts. In locations where multiple gravel excavations are present within the meander zone, a comprehensive reclamation and restoration plan should be developed which provides long-term channel stability within the natural variability of the entire river reach.

Stabilization of slopes on abandoned mine land (AML) invariably involves some channelization to control surface drainage. Typically, these channels are lined with riprap or gabions, depending on gradient and expected flow rate. The conventional treatments pose a problem since they require frequent maintenance and replacement at times. Soil bioengineering presents an alternative to the conventional measures. In soil bioengineering, living woody plant material forms the main structural component in systems designed to prevent shallow mass slope failures, surface erosion, and channel bank erosion. An experimental application of soil bioengineering techniques was designed and implemented at an AML site in eastern Kentucky. The design consisted of live fascines and live stakes using willow branches installed with coir geotextile. Channel gradient, length, and cross-section were considered in the design.
