In a continuing effort to improve plant efficiency, United States Steel's Atlantic City Ore Operations completed the rubber lining of its balling drums in late 1982. This resulted in benefits of reduced bentonite consumption, reduced maintenance costs, improved production rates, and lower power consumption. These advantages far outweigh the disadvantages of increased oversize production and increased surging on the roll screen sizing devices. Certain operating characteristics and variables are discussed herein.

The “Teaching Kids” project is an educational initiative for young people and children from elementary schools. It is carried out by Mining, Geological, and Environmental Engineering students from the SME Student Chapter of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Medellin. The primary purpose of the Teaching Kids project is to share knowledge about geosciences and mineral resources in a didactic and attractive way, emphasizing the importance of identifying the use of minerals in daily life and responsible and sustainable mining in our society. Furthermore, this project aims to promote the importance of pursuing geoscience majors in the new generations and improve the mining industry’s public perception. Different methodologies related to early childhood education are implemented, such as gamification, in which the dynamics of games are adapted during the development of workshops to teach and learn in an active and motivated environment. Furthermore, the Montessori Method is used. It implements textbooks, sensory mineral boxes, and presentations to allow learning through experimentation itself (Montessori 2003). The implementation of this methodology has been successful; it has shown high engagement, participation, and retention of the basic concept of geoscience and mining.

Strategic mine planning focuses on cutoff grade selection, capacity planning and block sequencing. Despite significant knowledge accumulated, potential value can be added to mineral sourcing by addressing various aspects. A case study on a metallic deposit with a lognormal grade distribution examines if grade/metal distribution influences cutoff grade selection. Six data sets with different shape and scale factors, but the same ore tonnage and metal quantity, are analyzed. Results indicate deposits with lower shape and scale factors are more sensitive to metal price and discount rate changes. The study also investigates the effect of economies of scale (EoS) on project value, focusing on the ratio of variable cost to total cost (capacity factor). Two regression analyses are conducted for optimal capacity planning and cutoff grade selection. The first shows capacity planning is highly sensitive to the EoS of mining and mineral-processing costs, with grade variability and metal distribution being negligible. In the second analysis, grade variability and EoS of mineral processing costs are vital for cutoff grade selection.

For every blast pattern, zones of unique material types need to be classified before mining. Most material types can be summarized into different kinds of ore and waste. Blocks generated from blasthole assays are too small to be selectively mined, so areas with a single material classification meeting the mine’s selective mining unit must be defined. Current industry standard practices are to manually draw ore/waste dig limits, but this process is subjective and results in quantities of dilution and ore loss that can be improved upon to enhance the profitability of mining operations. In this study, two weeks of production data from a homogeneous copper (Cu) porphyry and heterogeneous manto-type Cu deposit were used to assess the variability in the hand-drawn dig limits of 20 geologists, mining engineers and ore control specialists, which were compared with the optimal ore/waste delineation. The profit for 20 distinct hand-drawn dig limits for the homogeneous mine varied by 3.7 percent, from $10.5 million to $10.9 million, averaging at $10.8 million. The percentage was nearly double for the more heterogeneous mine at 5.9 percent, from $17.9 million to $19.0 million, averaging at $18.6 million. Using the optimal ore waste delineation, the profit increased to $11.0 million (1.9 percent increase) and $19.3 million (7.0 percent increase) for the homogeneous and heterogeneous deposit, respectively. The natural variability, diggability requirement and selectivity are identified as the main drivers of ore loss and dilution. Recommendations are provided for reducing the subjectivity in manual hand-drawn dig limits by integrating dig limit optimization algorithms as a tool to assist practitioners.

Certain hydrologic parameters are affected by development of a mine. These include the area, yield, and storage in a watershed. Alteration of these parameters results in variations in lake levels and stream flow rates and in changes in ground water elevations and gradients. These factors have become increasingly important in light of present environmental design standards and government regulations. Mitigation of adverse hydrologic impacts can be costly and can create operating constraints which complicate the mining process.

DOUG HALBE: Thanks, Terry. And in spite of your introductory comments, I'm going to attempt to continue our hallowed tradition of saying nice things about the speakers. This is really a serious comment now. We, as mineral processing and mill people, don't often talk to people outside our general operating area. One thing that we've tried to do in this operators' symposium is get speakers from various types of plant operations to help illustrate all the things we have in common. Our next speaker is from the industrial minerals area. I think there's a lot to be learned from industrial minerals operations. Some of the people in the last session learned some things about fine grinding in industrial mineral operations. I was a little surprised to see people there grind to 2 microns. Our next speaker is Frank Alsobrook. Frank is another nonmetallurgical engineer. He has a degree in geology, a master's of science from the University of Wisconsin. He's had his own very successful consulting company for a number of years. This is your 11th anniversary, Frank? Very good. He's also the immediate past chair of the industrial minerals division. I think the folks at the speakers' table should be ashamed. You have been so rowdy that Frank chose to sit in the audience. [laughter] We'd like you to come up now, Frank, and tell us some things that you've seen that might be useful to us. INTRODUCTION FRANK ALSOBROOK: The three topics addressed briefly are (1) teamwork and operations modeling, (2) the pitfalls of capital conservatism, and (3) the potential for by-product recovery. Ideas for improvements in these areas are not unique to industrial minerals but apply to metal mining and processing operations, as well. Several additional topics are suggested at the end of the paper.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has tried many regional and laboratory efforts to develop measurement and monitoring techniques using environmental remote sensing technologies. In 1997, the agency established the Advanced Measurement Initiative (AMI): This is a eadquarters-level program, operating under the auspices of the EPA Office of Research and Development. The program is one result of the April 30,1996 White House Conference on Advanced Monitoring of the Environment. The EPA was encouraged to work with other federal agencies to leverage its remote sensing capabilities and use them to improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness and flexibility of environmental measurement and monitoring for regulatory compliance and reinvention. During the fall of 1996, the EPA and the Department of Energy developed an interagency effort to broaden the use of governmental technologies for environmental measurement and monitoring. In addition, the EPA and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) conducted joint workshops on the use of NASA remote sensing and other technologies for water quality and pollution applications. In the meantime, the EPA proceeded with an industry-proposed workshop to explore ways to cooperatively examine new research and to develop commercial remote sensing systems. It also examined how these systems might become accepted by the EPA in the regulatory and compliance processes. In particular, industry was interested in where new remote sensing capabilities might fit in with EPA's efforts at regulatory reinvention. Historically, the mining and petroleum industries have been reluctant to experiment with or use environmental remote sensing. They were concerned with the unknown liability from potential discovery of previously unknown environmental problems. Moreover, resource industries have been reluctant to use remote sensing for environmental applications where the EPA did not accept such data or information as part of the compliance process. Acceptance by the EPA of these advanced measurement and monitoring technologies (AMMT) will be a major reason for industry's increasedd use of remote sensing in environmental "applications for regulatory compliance. In July 1997, the EPA Office of Research and Development hosted at the Colorado School of Mines a stakeholders workshop on the AMI program and industry-government collaboration. The workshop's aim was to demonstrate the usefulness of AMMT technologies for environmental applications. Stakeholders included the mining and petroleum industries; environmental services companies; state environmental agencies and local governments; remote-sensing, value-added companies and data suppliers. The workshop used specific technologies and applications as a way to develop collaborative demonstration projects for several AMMT technologies covering different environmental problems. The workshop focused on the use of highly sensitive hyperspectral (very narrow spectral bands), geographic information systems and surface mapping to identify active acid-producing mine dumps and wastes from benign wastes at Leadville, CO. NASA's advance infrared imaging spectrometer (AVIRIS) was the instrument used. It was developed at California Technology's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The EPA, the US Bureau of Land Managment (BLM), the US Geological Survey and several environmental service contractors sponsored the overflight and data evaluation. The AVIRIS study demonstrated reliability (95% correct surface mineral identification) and cost-effectiveness of this technology to accurately map and discriminate active acid-producing mine wastes from benign wastes. It could also predict which streams would be effected by acid and toxic mineral drainage. The BLM'said that the AVIRIS overflight could save it $500,000 a year in surface sampling costs at Leadville. The AMI workshop further outlined five 1997 funded AMI projects of potential interest to the mining industry. They were: ? The sodium smectitic clays (bentonites), have more industrial applications in that class of mineral, a driving force to obtain this mineral. In Brazil, there are several occurrences of smectitic clays, unfortunately they are polycationic, with a distribution of several exchangeable cations, where the cation sodium occurs in minor quantity. In this work, the original polycationic smectitic clay was firstly proper characterized and then treated with sodium carbonate obtaining homoionic sodium smectitic clay. The rheological tests in the optimized sodium smectitic clay showed good results for drilling fluids, typical of a sodium bentonite ones.

Introduction The East-West Gateway Coordinating Council is an organization of local governments formed in 1965 to identify regional problems and to formulate policies, plans and programs to resolve them. The major goal of the Gateway Council is to improve the quality of life for the citizens of the St. Louis Region. While East-West Gateway Coordinating Council is the organization I represent and it only deals with the St. Louis Metropolitan Area, you will find one or more similar organizations in each of our nation's urbanized areas. As a result, for illustrative purposes, I will use my organization to portray what is happening nationwide. For example, in order to eliminate duplication, the Council reviews local applications for approximately 100 federally funded programs in such areas as highways, mass transit, parks, water treatment, and sewers before they can be sent to the appropriate funding agency. The Council's varied functions place it in a unique position of receiving more and more responsibility for developing strategies of implementation of various environmental regulations. This is due to the fact that environmental control is a relatively new field and we, as a country, are relatively inexperienced. The resulting regulations and guidelines will depend, to a great extent, on what the general public is willing to accept in terms of controls and what price they are willing to pay in terms of taxes and increased costs. Calcium carbonate is one of the highest volume industrial mineral products in North America. It is used in filler and extender applications, roofing products, floor tile, glass manufacture, etc. Calcium carbonate has over a dozen major filler and extender applications plus a host of minor uses. North American consumption of calcium carbonate fillers and extenders in 1991 is estimated at over 5,000,000 tons valued in excess of $400,000,000. There were five major suppliers of calcium carbonate fillers in the Middle Atlantic region in 1988 :?Bestone, Genstar, National Gypsum, Thomasville Stone and Lime, and White Pigment. With the exception of Genstar's Maryland operation, all of these operations are within a few miles of York, Pennsylvania. The Millington Group (TMG) purchased the assets of Bestone Corporation in February of 1989. TMG then seized the opportunity to strengthen its business position by acquiring National Gypsum's and White Pigment's Pennsylvania filler businesses in December, 1989 and July, 1990, respectively. By July of 1990 TMG's filler business acquisitions included six quarries and one underground mine, totaling over 1,200 acres and three processing facilities. The assets were restructured into two new companies - Delta Carbonate, Inc. and Penroc, Inc. (hereafter collectively referred to as Delta). Delta identified the assets of the three predecessor companies as undervalued from the outset. The initial phase of Delta's turnaround strategy was to reassess the combined mineral. mining, processing, transportation and marketing assets. The second phase was to effectively integrate these resources in order to exploit their inherent synergy.

By using a computer application to monitor all aspects of the daily production as well as the maintenance, a company can immediately effect a cost reduction by studying the down-time and delay trends on an everyday basis. What is the cummulative rate of recovery of copper from a sulfide leach dump? This is one of the most frequently asked questions today. We, in the industry, ask it of each other when we meet; however, the technical answers may vary from "I don't know" to 'quite good" from people within the same company. Management also poses this question because it plays a vital role in our planning for future production. The answer is difficult because of the many variables between different operations such as physical construction of the dump, topography of the original site, characteristics of dump material, mineralization, water application, etc. Each has a bearing on the rate of recovery. OPERATIONAL DATA Our method of water distribution is unique in that each dump is drilled to allow physical injection of water into the dump. The in¬jection holes are drilled vertically, on 251 centers, from the surface of the dump. Normally, the holes are drilled 40' deep and cased with 4" PVC perforated pipe.. The pipe is perforated at one-foot intervals with four V diameter holes at 901 spacing on the pipe circumference. We formerly alternated shallow holes (20'-40') with deep holes (80'-l80') in an effort to cover the entire dump and hasten oxidation. The shallow hole depth varied according to the compaction thickness. The deep hole depth varied according to the height of the dump and the original ground profile, We prefer to have the deep holes end 20'-30' above the original ground level. This generally allows us to penetrate the coarse material at the bottom of the dump. We had to discontinue the deep holes_ in order to cover more dump area in a shorter period of time to meet increased production requirements.

Iran possesses very large copper resources, estimated to contain around 4-5% of the world's known copper inventory. There are several small private sector copper mining operating in the country, but Iran's copper industry is dominated by the state-owned National Iranian Copper Industries Company, which operates the world-class Sar-Cheshmeh open-pit Mine. This mine was developed in 1970s before the 1979 Islamic Revelation by the Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO), the former Anaconda Copper Mining Company. Current Iran?s copper cathode production is about 250,000 mtpa and recently it is targeted to reach to 700.000 t by 2014. The required finance for this target is estimated US $2.25 -b, i.e. US $5000 for each tonne capacity. The copper content of the mineable reserves of the country is estimated about 19 Mt. It is not unlikely this amount increases in close future. Currently, almost 30 projects consist of mine, concentrator, smelter, refinery, acid plant, leaching, bio-leaching are underway. These projects are a golden opportunity for the local and foreign companies, but the recent sanctions are very challenging that all studied in this paper.

The expanded role which coal has been assigned in the energy future of the United States has raised numerous policy questions. The very complexity of these questions makes them suitable to analysis by econometric models. However, as the Wall Street Journal indicated in its recent article, business' success with such models have been mixed. I have been asked to present my views as to how coal producers can use such models and in what ways the industry is likely to be impacted by such models. I do not presume to speak for the whole coal industry, but only to share with you the personal observations of one who has worked "both sides of the street", having been employed' both by government and a consulting firm prior to joining the coal industry. In my opinion, the use of econometric models to analyze the coal industry will impact the coal producers in two main ways. First, their use by government will have a profound impact on future government policies related to the mining, transportation and utilization of coal. Second, such models, when properly calibrated and refined, may become useful tools for the coal producers in doing market research and long-range planning. While the former has already begun to impact on the operating environment or the coal industry, the latter is still in the embryo stage.

"The city of Denver, CO has experienced extreme growth in the past decade, with the population of the city topping more than 700,000 people in 2018. The current storm water drainage system was put in place in the early 1900s and has not been able to keep up with the growth of the city.When it rains north and east of the city, the runoff goes toward the South Platte River. With the dense population and sometimes severe thunderstorms in the summer, the city has experienced significant flooding that not only endangers lives of residents, but some of the storms have caused millions of dollars of property damage.The Platte to Park Hill Project is a $298-million nearterm, four-phase solution to the flooding that includes the Globeville landing outfall; an open drainage project in the Cole neighborhood in north Denver; an area for temporary water detention and another temporary water detention in Park Hill.The largest and most complex phase of the project is the Globeville landing outfall — a $70-million box culvert project that includes a pair of 157-m (515-ft) long, 243-cm (96-in.) diameter storm water tunnels that pass beneath a busy rail yard with 17 tracks for the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and two Regional Transportation District (RTD) commuter rail tracks. The tunnels, which were installed parallel to a pair of existing 243-cm (96-in.) tunnels, were designed by Brierley & Associates as a client of Merrick & Company for the City & County of Denver, and Bradshaw Construction constructed the one-pass tunnels.From the start, it was evident that the tunneling portion of the project would be the most challenging because of the rail yards.“It’s a little bit more complicated because the railroads have such tight restrictions for settlement,” said Rebecca Brock, Brierley’s project manager. “We had a lot of meetings with Union Pacific and RTD to figure out what are prescribed versus tolerable settlements.”“The portion extending beyond the UPRR under the RTD rails was challenging, as RTD is new to tunnel installations under its tracks,” said Lester Bradshaw, president of Bradshaw Construction. “The RTD tracks employed a unique foundation of continuous concrete with integral raised concrete ties on rubber bushings. Minimizing settlement to these tracks was a critical requirement.”"

The prolonged exposure of equipment operators to shock and whole-body vibration (WBY) is linked to cumulative back, neck, and abdominal disorders. In low-coal mines, space restrictions make seat suspensions difficult to use in isolating operators from shock and WBY. Researchers at NIOSH, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, are responding to these issues by investigating viscoelastic foams. For the full-load case. an ergonomic seat with viscoelastic foams isolated the shuttle car operator from shock at 15Hz. Researchers used results from additional foam testing with an analytical model to identify viscoelastic foams that provide shock isolation at a frequency below 5 Hz.

Over 10 percent of the United States of America or 41 percent of the Federal lands is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as Public Lands. The mission is to manage the use of these lands and their resources. The way in which BLM carries out its mission is being refocused under the concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem-based management for the benefit of various human needs including environmental, social and economic values. The Bureau is developing methods to integrate the renewable and non-renewable resources programs into the concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem-based management. Exploration, development and extraction of energy or mineral resources on Public Lands are affected. The statements that following the next few pages are my personal views as a scientist (economic geologist -mining technologist) who is and has been involved for the last twenty years in the multiple-use management of Public Lands. They are not necessarily the position of the Bureau of Land Management, although much of the information on which I base my views comes from my experience with the BLM. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages over 10 percent of the United States (270 million acres or 108 million hectares) which is 41 percent of the Federal Lands. Lands managed by BLM are known as Public Lands as opposed to the National Forest Lands which are Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) of 1976 which in Sec. 102 states ??that it is the policy of the United States (7) ?that management be on the basis of multiple use and sustained yield??, the mission of the BLM is rapidly refocused under the concepts of biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecosystems-based management for the benefit of the environment, human needs and socio-economic values.
