Heap leaching efficiency is reduced by poor solution flow characteristics (channeling and ponding), which result from compaction and fines migration. Agglomeration of the ore can prevent compaction and immobilize fines, but copper leaching requires an acid-resistant binder to stabilize the agglomerates. Until now, there has not been a satisfactory way to evaluate whether a binder was effective, other than squeezing a handful to see if it ?feels right.? Procedures have been developed to quantitatively determine whether a binder produces agglomerates that can withstand compaction in an acidic solution, and have identified several binders that will provide sufficiently compaction-resistant agglomerates for copper heap leaching. Boreholes are used for many purposes in mining operations, petroleum engineering, and construction works. Numerous factors affect the performance of drilling equipment. Researchers continue to work on the variable drilling parameters that can be adjusted in order to reach more efficient drilling operations. Penetration rate is an essential indicator in drillability analysis and estimating. This parameter is of great importance in mining projects. There are almost no models that can estimate the penetration rate for core drilling operations. Under the abovementioned circumstances, this paper focuses on developing models that allow estimating the penetration rate based on rock material properties. During the conduct of this study, drilling experiments under 11 different pressure forces were performed on 8 different rock units, and the equations which estimated the penetration rate depending on the physico-mechanical properties of the rock samples were derived. Experiments were carried out under different pressure forces to investigate the effect of the pressure force on the derived estimation models. The obtained results allowed deriving equations that ensured estimating the penetration rate based on the physico-mechanical properties of the rocks and the applied pressure force. Using these equations, the penetration rate in core drilling operations can be estimated.

Based on the limiting-equilibrium analysis of roof processive caving in hanging wall caving method and the critical medium column theory, a new model of subsidence prediction caused by sublevel caving mining method was proposed in this study, considering the drawing influence and the dynamic process of filling granular media. Meanwhile, the distribution rules for lateral pressure with different orebody dip were studied under drawing ore, and subsequently complemented the model. This model indicated that the surface subsidence scope decreased as the unit weight of crack rock and the orebody dip increased. In addition, the height of critical medium column showed a decreasing trend as cohesion of rock mass, the internal friction angle and the unit weight of rock mass. Also, the method of predicting the scope of surface subsidence in the Dabeishan Iron Mine was applied. The results showed that the relative errors are less than 9% and the prediction method could be used in practical application.

The objective was to determine operating protocols for a lead and silver column flotation cleaner, being considered for installation at Sunshine Mining & Refining Co.'s Kellogg mill in Northern Idaho. In this column, tetrahedrite and galena were floated, and pyrite and other gangue minerals, including siderite and silica, were depressed. The procedure was to develop a dynamic simulation using a linear transfer function approach. The transfer function related cause and effect variables such as the influence of collector and depressant dosages on recovery and grades. Bench-scale flotation tests followed by pilot column testing provided the data used to develop a linear transfer function. The transfer function was derived using a spreadsheet. This model was applied to simulate how the flotation column could be made to respond to disturbances in feed grade. The results were that xanthate, zinc sulfate, and sodium cyanide were found to be suitable controls for grade and recovery. Simulations showed the best sequence of manipulations of these reagents, and these sequences were useful for future operator training. The conclusion was that linear transfer functions were able to simulate lead and silver recovery, develop scenarios for operator training, and provide a foundation for future on-line control.

Open cast surface mining requires blast hole drilling with many interesting facets in order to achieve mine planning forecasts. Interestingly, no single method or combination of theoretical hypothesis of mining economics is right for all conditions. On occasion mine planners introduce a project with little or no regard to drilling and blasting. Generally, drilling and blasting costs are a significant percentage of total mine overhead. One such drilling and blasting method which can be utilized to reduce overall mine expenditure is inclined or angle hole drilling. One must bear in mind, that angle hole drilling per-se mill not reduce costs, unless a set of required circumstances is met. An attempt will be made to detail when conditions of the mine design criteria dictate the use of angle drilling.

The prestressed concrete industry in particular, and the precast concrete industry to some extent, are rank newcomers to the concrete construction field compared to the cement, ready-mixed or concrete masonry industries. This young industry reflects its youth and vigor in its enthusiasm, optimism and the belief that it can reach any goal it chooses to set -- and it is setting its sights high. The prestressed and precast concrete industry fully expects to become the major structural and architectural material by the 1980's. Before exploring how the industry expects to reach this goal, a brief look at the origins and the growth of the industry may be useful in an evaluation of the feasibility of this goal. It was always recognized that concrete, strong and efficient for supporting loads which cause compression, was weak and inefficient when used to carry loads which induce tension. Thus the reason for reinforced concrete in which the concrete efficiently carries the compression in a flexural member while low grade steel bars reinforce the concrete in the areas 'of tensile stress. (Fig. 1). The steel being relatively inexpensive, can passively, but quite effectively carry tensile force while the concrete carries compression. The concrete in contact with the reinforcing also protects the steel from corrosion and acts as insulation to provide a superior "built-in" fire resistance. The major disadvantage of reinforced concrete relative to its main competitor, steel, is its weight in relation to its load-carrying capacity. Mining activity in South America is a growing enterprise. One of difficulties found in many areas of the South American continent, especially in north Chile and south Peru, is the shortage of water supply. In order to overcome this difficulty some mining companies proposed to transport the water from Pacific Ocean up to the mountains. This can be accomplished by the use of stainless steel pipelines, but this is a cost prohibitive solution and is also subject to severe pitting corrosion in a saline environment. The use of mild steel may be a lower cost solution than stainless steel as the material of construction for pipelines but it is subject to corrosion anyway. The corrosion in this case can be internal or external corrosion although cathodic protection as well preventive maintenance usually is enough to mitigate external corrosion without the need to shut down the pipeline. The same is not true about the prevention of internal corrosion. It is not practical, sometimes not even possible, shutdown a pipeline to carry out an inspection and fix sections where potential failures are detected. It is possible avoid corrosion caused by sea water within the mild steel pipelines by applying a proper chemical program designed to virtually eliminate dissolved oxygen in the water commonly called deaeration.1 This type of treatment obviously involves additional capital investment since it requires the construction of one deaerator with the first pumping station and additional equipment at each point where the water can come into contact with oxygen. Deaerators will increase operational costs and subsequent injection of chemicals will be required in the case of multiple degasification facilities thus increasing the consumption of chemicals. grams based on oxygen scavengers, the objective of the present study is to develop a new water treatment capable of preventing mild steel corrosion in aerated sea water. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Explosive Excavation Research Office (EERO) of Livermore, California, has been engaged in research and development of excavation techniques using both nuclear and conventional explosives since 1962. Prior to July 1971, this organization was designated the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Nuclear Cratering Group. The EERO mission is performed as part of the joint Atomic Energy Commission -Corps of Engineers nuclear excavation research pro-gram. During the period 1962-1969, the Corps executed many cratering explosions using spherical charges of up to 85 tons of nitromethane to model nuclear excavation concepts and to develop design criteria for the nuclear cratering explosions. The experience gained in these modeling tests suggested that explosive excavation using large chemical explosive charges could be applied to excavation projects as an economical substitute for traditional excavation techniques. Consequently, the Corps' research program was broadened in 1969 to include development of chemical explosive excavation as a construction tool. The term "explosive excavation" denotes the use of large buried explosive charges to produce an excavation by fracturing the material and casting it into a desired configuration. In its simplest form, this technology involves detonation of a single explosive charge buried at the proper depth to produce a crater which is roughly hyperbolic in cross section. The types of craters produced by various depths of burial are illustrated by Figure 1. Single or Multiple rows of charges are used to excavate linear cuts required for water conveyance or navigation channels. .More complex explosive excavations include small craft harbors, railroad and highway cuts, and removal of W1denvater rock barriers to navigation. Hypochlorite leaching system is a strong oxidizing solution for metal sulfides, which are naturally associated with gold extraction. This study evaluated the hypochlorite leaching of refractory gold ore by using the response surface method–central composite design (RSM-CCD) as a statistical approach in determining the optimum condition of gold extraction from refractory gold ore. The studied parameters for the gold recovery were pH (4 to 6), concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 (0.5 to 1.5 M) and NaCl (2.5 to 3.5 M) in the solution. It was found that the maximum gold extraction of 82.46% (13.85 g/t) was achieved at a pH of 4.0 with NaCl and Ca(OCl)2 concentrations of 2.93 M and 1.08 M, respectively. The statistical analysis also revealed that the amount of gold recovery in chloride solution was significantly depended on pH as the main factor, followed by concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 and NaCl.

Survival of the mining industry as a viable economic entity in the United States is being seriously threatened by declining grades of ore reserves, rising operational and capital costs, and increased governmental taxes, restrictions, and subsidizing of third world competition. Discovery of major high-grade deposits is becoming increasingly unlikely. International competitiveness of the U.S. deposits will depend upon 'Yankee Ingenuity,' innovations in mining methods, metallurgical treatment, and financial arrangements, and a viable national strategy. This will require not only effective management for control of operations, but management that encourages breakthroughs in technology, financing, labor relations, and in public and governmental understanding. The mine geologist and the exploration geologist both have important roles to play in all aspects of this fight for survival of the industry.

Compressed air energy storage (CAES) has been initiated recently in West Germany with a 290 MW peaking-power facility utilizing twin cavities with volumes of 150,000 m3 each in the Huntorf salt dome (1). The implementation of CAES in several geologic media is being studied carefully in the United States (2); however, the use of cavities for CAES in salt domes or salt anticlines and the associated long-term stability of these cavities is the specific topic of this paper (3). The cavities represent an essential element in a CAES plant, and thus should be designed and operated to perform with "stability" over the planned life of the overall facility. As employed herein, cavity stability implies the extent to which an acceptable amount of cavity storage volume can be utilized with economic maintenance over the planned life of the overall facility. In this sense stability is relative to the planned use of a storage cavity. Figure 1. depicts the salt deposits of the United States (U.S.) (4). The Gulf Coast region includes the only confirmed salt dome basin in the U.S., although salt structures also exist as anticlines in the Paradox Basin of Utah and Colorado. Because of the relatively small amount of elevation change within the Gulf Coast, CAES in salt dome cavities appears to hold considerably more potential for energy storage in this region than more traditional "pumped hydro" systems.

IINTRODUCTION Widespread activities in precious metal projects in the western U.S., Australia, Canada and other parts of the world have opened a flood-gate of consul- ting expertise to aid and accelerate the development process. Utilization of outside expertise has taken on many shapes and forms that have in some instances actually "decelerated" or "retarded" project progress. Small mines are especially vulnerable to apparent false-starts and misdirections, be- cause of their generally lower capital commitments, shorter lead times and limited mineral in-house expertise. Mine development for small mines requires fundamental approaches by knowledgeable consultants that are timely and cost-efficient and in line with accelerated development, if they are to be successful. The development process is obviously that process which brings a given deposit into production. Or, put another way, the process comprises all activities, decisions and commitments which take place from the moment an authorizing entity (usually a board of directors) com- mits to development and production (usually on the basis of a final feasibility study) until the first ton of ore is processed to a saleable product. The activities, decisions and commitments over a development period--such a period can range from as short as a year or less to as long as 5 years or more--are many, highly varied, and often interdependent. The development period is also particularly risky, not only because of the varied and interdependent decisions and commitments, but also because of capital demand amounts. Delays in the development process are thus particularly costly - sometimes so costly that small and often undercapitalized mining companies, failing to reach production and a cash flow within a planned period, face, if not bankruptcy, at least severe equity dilution or particularly onerous and restrictive covenants on additional loan financing. It therefor behooves especially small mining companies to examine ways to accelerate development. By doing so, the development process may actually meet planned scheduling. The development process generally comprises environmental impact studies completion, final engineering, permit- ting, financing, equipment and machinery procurement, contractor selection and construction -- such activities largely being overlapping. The paper addresses what the small mines operator or the small mining company can do with consulting firms to accelerate development. By "small mines" is meant open pit operations of 2000 tpd or less and underground operations of 500 tpd or less. By "consulting firms" is meant entities who do not possess an engineering and construction capability, such as Derry Michener Booth & Wahl, Pincock Allen & Holt, Behre Dolbear-Riverside, etc. The paper concentrates on gold projects. PRIORITY CONSIDERATIONS Of the items listed in the previous paragraph which comprise the development process, the two which most consistently appear to cause delays are permitting and financing. The former's delays can be due to political overtones and thus the delays may not be reasonably foreseeable. The latter's delays are most often due to inadequate preparation, and thus are avoidable. For the reason stated above, and considering that financing is fundamental to all of the activities which constitute the development process, the paper focuses on financing as the priority item which can most assist in accelerating or retarding the development process.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Northwest Barricade LLC (NWB) conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel fire blocking gel for use in underground coal mines to extinguish or retard the growth of a coal fire. The gel agent was subjected to controlled laboratory testing to assess its ability to delay coal ignition. It was then evaluated to determine if manual fire hose application could be used to apply the agent to mine roofs and ribs to provide a safe egress for mine rescue teams from a fire area. The gel agent was also evaluated in a water sprinkler system to determine its potential for use in conveyor belt fire suppression systems. The agent was then tested in live-fire exercises to examine its effectiveness in retarding and extinguishing a deep-seated coal fire and wood fire. Lastly, the ability of a mine rescue team to quickly and safely apply the gel agent to a mine entry during a simulated mine fire exercise was determined.

Universities and colleges in three countries, Australia, Canada and the United States, recognized the need to establish and/or reorganize geoscience programs at the vocational and two-year technical levels. To accomplish this goal, a cooperative study with industry in one state or province from each country was initiated. These include 1) Tasmania, Australia, 2) British Columbia, Canada and 3) Alaska, United States. Over one hundred mineral industry organizations cooperated in the study by providing information regarding their specific training needs for support personnel. The data gathered has been used to identify training areas for semi-skilled, skilled and technical personnel in geochemical mineral exploration, including, but not limited to, geological skills, geochemical skills, environmental skills and computer skills. With the areas of major educational need defined for geochemical exploration, an educational field skills model has been developed for the three levels of training. The depth of each level of education and the training objectives for the work force at each level will be discussed.

Design of chain pillars in a longwall mine setting is one of the main engineering controls on the global and local stability of the mine. Challenges with roof instabilities, floor heaves, and pillar failures can be alleviated, to some extent, by careful design of gateroad configurations and chain pillars. This work investigates three different alternative designs in a three-entry-system gateroad configuration with an inter-panel barrier in a longwall mine in Virginia. Starting with the current design, which has faced challenges such as excessive floor heave, a geomechanical model developed in 3DEC software is validated by monitoring in-situ pillar stress in the yield, abutment, and barrier pillars in the mine. Next, three different chain pillar designs are evaluated in the model with a focus on roof sagging, floor heave, and pillar average stress. Results show the relationships among the alternative designs and instabilities associated with roof, pillar, and floor in the study mine, providing insights for optimizing longwall mining designs in deep-cover settings.

A greenfield open pit gold mine in Latin America suspended operations less than three years into an eight-year mine plan after a waste rock dump and heap leach facility sustained substantial damage from a deep-seated landslide. No injuries to employees were recorded because of the slow-moving failure. Due to early detection by the operations team, the owner had sufficient notice of the potential failure and successfully rinsed the heap leach facility prior to the failure event. Engineers estimated approximately 35 million cubic meters of mass movement below the waste rock and heap leach facilities. The original eight-year mine plan produced approximately 60,000 ounces of gold per year. After the failure, the owner terminated gold production, re-configured the mine site to a safe, standby condition and launched a detailed investigation into the root-cause of the failure. Approximately two years after the shutdown, legal interests filed a statement of claim and named three engineering design firms and individuals involved in the project. Several years of litigation, including discovery and deposition proceedings, followed as the legal process considered evidence spanning a 20-year timeline. Changes in project ownership and consulting firms during the development and operations phase complicated the process. In 2017, the plaintiff and last defendant settled. The author was involved as the corporate representative for one of the engineering design firms.

Propelled by the invention of the transistor at Bell Laboratories, germanium's unique properties have advanced our electronic world by many years. Germanium has found major uses in infrared optics, fiber optics and a revised vigor as a catalyst for PET plastic production. Other advanced applications are in various stages of development. The solid state electronics industry has been the driving force behind the accelerating demand for gallium since the late sixties. Past developments of substrates for light emitting diodes, lasers and magnetic bubble memories are paling in view of the current excitement over the use of semi-insulating gallium arsenide for high performance integrated circuits. This application requires gallium metal and gallium compounds of extraordinary purity.

The focus of this research was to evaluate the synergistic effect of bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid (CYANEX 272) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), diluted in kerosene, on the extraction and separation of Co(II) and Li(I) from synthetic sulfate solution. The results indicated that using a mixture of CYANEX 272 and D2EHPA was efficient in extracting and separating Co(II) from Li(I). The optimum ratio of CYANEX 272/D2EHPA was found to be 5:1, in which the highest separation factor was obtained (5973.23), and ΔpH0.5 was 4.10. Adding tributyl phosphate (TBP) as a modifier and increasing the temperature improved the metals’ separation rate and extraction efficiency. Thermodynamic studies were also carried out, and ΔH, ΔS, and ΔG values were computed, revealing the endothermic nature of Co(II) and Li(I) extraction by CYANEX 272/D2EHPA mixture. The conducted experiments for the McCabe–Thiele diagram showed the possibility of using two stages to extract over 99% of Co(II) and Li(I). Slope analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were employed to comprehend the Co(II) and Li(I) extraction mechanism using a mixture of CYANEX 272 and D2EHPA.
