Thermal decomposition of copper (II) sulfate (CUS04) and copper (II) oxy-sulfate (CuO?CUS04) are important steps in the overall oxidative roasting of covellite (CuS) and chalcocite (Cu2S). Nonisothermal thermogravimetric techniques were used to investigate the decomposition reactions in flowing Na and air. Thermal decomposition of CUS04 and CuO?CUS04 followed "linear" kinetics with an apparent activation energy of 55±2 and 66±3 kcal per mole decomposed, respectively. These apparent activation energies comply with those previously reported when isothermal kinetic techniques were used. The addition of oxygen decreased the rate of decomposition, while small amounts of iron which were admixed with CuO?CUS04 did not have a significant effect. Neither oxygen nor iron had any appreciable effect on the apparent activation energy of the decomposition reaction.

Since 1988, there have been 17 documented incidents in the United States and Canada in which carbon monoxide (CO) is suspected to have migrated through ground strata into occupied enclosed spaces as a result of proximate trench blasting or surface mine blasting. These incidents resulted in 39 suspected or medically verified carbon monoxide poisonings and one fatality. To better understand the factors contributing to this hazard, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) carried out studies in a 12-foot diameter sphere to identify key factors that may enhance the levels of CO associated with the detonation of several commercial trenching explosives. The gaseous detonation products from emulsions, a watergel, and ANFO blasting agents as well as gelatin dynamite, TNT, and Pentolite boosters were measured in an argon atmosphere and compared with those for the same explosives detonated in air. Test variables included explosive formulation, wrapper, aluminum addition, oxygen balance, and density. Major contributing factors to CO production, under these laboratory test conditions, are presented. The main finding is the high CO production associated with the lack of afterburning in an oxygen poor atmosphere. Fumes measurements are compared with the manufacturer’s reported IME fume class and with the Federal Relative Toxicity Standard 30 CFR Part 15 in order to gain an understanding of the relative toxicity of some explosives used in trench blasting.

Improve the effectiveness of person-wearable self-contained self rescuer (PWSCSR) training by enhancing the memory retention of trainees in proper donning procedures. Background In the fall of 1989, a total of 185 miners and inspectors were trained by Bureau of Mines personnel to don the SR-100 PWSCSR using the Bureau's 3+3 method. With the exception of a few individuals, miners were trained underground in an area set up within their working sections. The instructional protocol was as follows: (1) after placing an SR-100 simulator (equipped with a cleaned and disinfected mouthpiece assembly) on the mine floor in front of the worker, a researcher guided him or her step-by-step through the complete donning procedure, (2) the miner was required to perform each step slowly, methodically, and correctly while being talked through the sequence, (3) following this pre-practice instruction, the apparatus was repacked and the subject donned the device without coaching, while being evaluated, (4) if an error was made, the worker received corrective feedback, the unit was repacked, and the entire donning trial was redone. This procedure was repeated until the miner achieved a perfect 3+3 sequence.

The spray fan system repositions regular water sprays to help the normal exhaust face ventilation do a more effective job. The various water sprays help in many ways: 1. Side sprays bring clean air along the side of the miner into the off-curtain corner.

"The production of silica and magnesia crucibles in the induction furnace was attempted and achieved in the laboratory of the Pacific Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines. This work was undertaken at the request of other stations for laboratory crucibles of a certain specified wall thickness and capacity.The essential new parts of this work are the development of a technique for the high-frequency furnace production of silica crucibles of greater wall thickness than could be readily fabricated from commercial fused silica, and for heavy-walled magnesia. crucibles of great density and mechanical strength. A considerable bode of patent literature on the Production of fused silica ware in resistor-type furnaces was examined, but it furnished no significant help for the present problem. Similarly sintered magnesia refractories are often made for technical purposes, but for use at temperatures of 2000o C. or over, the material must be sintered at higher temperatures than can be attained by combustion firing, and the very great shrinkage encountered at these temperatures requires special methods. Small crucibles. of magnesia fused in the electric arc have been made by Tritton and Hansen,3 but the practical size of such containers is very limited.Many different methods of making crucibles in the induction furnace were tried before satisfactory results were obtained. The following description covers only the most satisfactory method, which produced crucibles of excellent quality in a reasonable time and with a moderate expenditure of power and materials."

"A copper-palladium-gold-silver ore is being mined at Salt Chuck, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska, from which a concentrate is produced that contains 40 to 50 per cent copper, and considerable amounts of palladium, gold and silver. There has been much difficulty in obtaining assays for palladium, gold and silver from the mine, smelter, sampler, and umpire that check within reasonable limits. While the results for copper content have not been unusual, the results for palladium have varied as much as 0c8 oz. on 3 oz. material, results for gold differed by 0.1 oz. on 1.6 oz. materials, and for a silver content of 7 oz., results differed by as much as 4.0 oz.The Bureau of Mines was requested to determine the causes of variation in the results of the different assayers, and to develop a satisfactory procedure for analyzing such ore.Three samples of concentrate were received for analysis, two small lots that had previously been assayed by the various laboratories, and one large sample. The large sample was dried and ground in a ball mill, put through a 150-mesh screen, and then returned to the ball mill for thorough mixing. The small samples were ground to pass a 150-mesh screen and then mixed on a mixing wheel.The large sample (No. 1) was analyzed by five different procedures, one of the small samples (No.2) by three procedures, and the other (No. 3) by two procedures (the two small samples being too small for further tests). The different procedures tried and the results obtained arc presented below. The samples of concentrate were from ore mimed and milled by the Alaska palladium Co. at Salt Chuck."

The Bureau of Mines determined the kinetics of the reaction of titanium-iron alloys with titanium trichloride dissolved in sodium chloride to provide a basis for understanding the reactions occurring in metallurgical processes involving reduction of the metal halides or alloy refining in fused salts. The rate of the heterogeneous reaction was determined between titanium-iron alloys and titanium trichloride to elucidate the effects of alloy composition on the rate. Measurements were made in an inert atmosphere with a high-temperature thermobalance using high-purity reactants. The rates of the reactions were about 1 x 10-5 g Ti/cm2-sec, and the reaction was phase-boundary controlled. Titanium alloys of the body-centered cubic beta structure reacted faster than those with the hexagonal close-packed alpha structure. The inter-metallic compound, TiFe, reacted very slowly, whereas TiFe2 was inert. Alloys containing above 89 atomic percent iron gained weight by reacting with titanium species in the salt solution and depositing titanium in the alloy. The effect of TiCl3 concentration on the reaction rate was determined from 2 to 12 weight-percent TiC13 and at various alloy compositions. At high iron contents, above 50 atomic percent, the TiC13 concentration effect was small. At lower iron contents, the TiC13 concentration effect was greater for beta-crystalline alloys than for alpha-crystalline alloys. The temperature dependence of the reaction between titanium alloy containing 8.7 atomic percent iron and titanium trichloride was measured over the temperature range 1,062° to 1,220° K, and the energy of activation was 7.7 kilocalories for the reaction.

Improve underground long-hole drilling efficiency and safety by developing a lightweight, easily transportable drilling pust that can be adjusted to fit a range of mine opening heights. Background Standard one-piece commercially available steel posts weigh approximately 10 pounds per foot. Transporting these posts underground and carrying them over obstacles and through small mine doors is very difficult. Because the length of a one-piece post cannot be adjusted, variations in mine opening height at the drilling site must be accommodated. This is accomplished by stacking several wooden blocks to form a base for the post, resulting in a dangerously unstable drilling setup. The only alternative to this unstable setup is to obtain a longer post. There problems can be reduced by the use of a two-piece telescoping aluminum post having a 3-foot adjustment range in 6-inch increments. The two-piece extendable post will be easy to transport and carry underground. It will fit any opening height within its adjustment range. One large wooden block is used as a base and one cap block is used at the top to bear against the mine roof. This arrangement results in a stable, rigid setup.

"Methane, frequently called fire damp or marsh gas, is very well known to coal miners but to thy average gold miner it means nothing, as it is not associated generally with the rock formations in which gold is found.We have recently been conducting a study of mine air in typical gold mines on the Pacific Coast, and out of five California mines in which the air was sampled, three showed methane. Each of these three mines, referred to below as mines A, B, and C, have had accumulations great enough to be ignited. An authentic report from another California, gold mine, which has not yet been sampled, states that recently the superintendent was seriously burned by the ignition of a pocket of gas. This mine is later mentioned as mine D.Mine A is an old mine which had been abandoned for several years and permitted to fill with water. It has been unwaterad recently, and is now being developed at greater depths. During the unwatering, gas bubbles formed on the water and upon being ignited burned freely. It is reported that two men were seriously burned from accidentally igniting the gas. Samples of the bubbles on analysis showed high percentages of methane. Since the mine has been unwatered, no trouble has been experienced through gas being ignited. However, out of a total of six air samples which we took recently in scattered working places, all showed small amounts of methane, the methane content being 0.06, 0.04, 0.05, 0.04, 0.04 and 0.07 per cent, respectively. When these samples were taken methane was not suspected, but its general presence in the mine air indicates that it is being given off constantly."

APPENDIX A - PNEUMATIC TRANSPORT OF FLY ASH 1. Introduction Two types of pneumatic transport of fly ash are critical to the success of (1) Transport of fly ash from the fly ash truck to the entrance to the borehole. Depending on the surface topography, this may be horizontal, decential and ascential. (2) Vertical downflow of fly ash through the borehole. All fly ash trucks have limited pressure with which they can pump the fly ash. Thus, the pressure drop in the fly ash hose will define the maximum length for pumping and consequently the maximum distance that the fly ash truck can be parked from the auxiliary blower. The same relationships describe the flow of the dilute fly ash-air mixture produced by mixing with the auxiliary air from the blower and thus define the selection of the pipe diameter. These are im¬portant considerations in the proper selection of the location of the passages to be sealed and the type of surface preparation required. The flow characteristics of fly ash down the borehole determine the selection of the minimum borehole diameter and the blower pressure. This appendix presents theoretical analyses of these flow regimes and summarizes the limited experimental data obtained during the field tests at Grant Town, described in Section 8.4. The analysis for the borehole flow is presented first as it is of greater interest to the program. This is followed by a discussion of the horizontal flow.

Provide reasonably priced, reliable fire protection for AN-FO haulers. Approach An automatic fire sensing and suppression system for AN-FO haulers was developed and on-vehicle tested. How It Works The system works in two ways to protect personnel from dangerous and unpredictable AN-FO fires. First the system senses and suppresses fires on the truck before they spread to the AN-FO in the bunker. This design was chosen because AN-FO truck fires generally start when combustible liquids (such as diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid or lubricating oils) are ignited by hot surfaces mainly on three areas: the engine, the transmission or the power take-off. These fires are quickly sensed by a linear temperature sensor strung throughout these three areas. The system then warns the operator and automatically suppresses the fire by discharging 30 pounds of multipurpose dry chemical extinguishing agent through a network of fixed hoses and nozzles. Second, this system includes six spot thermal sensors mounted inside the bunker on the truck to monitor the AN-FO temperature in case a fire does spread to the bunker area. The Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory-scale investigation of a technique that produces zinc sulfate and elemental sulfur from sphalerite concentrates by reaction with sulfuric acid at 175° to 200° C and ambient pressure. The objective of the investigation was to develop a hydrometallurgical method of producing zinc from sulfide concentrates that does not generate sulfur dioxide pollutants. Reaction with 80-to 85-pct sulfuric acid produced 4 moles of sulfur for every 3 moles of sphalerite reacted, with minimal production of sulfur gases under optimum conditions. More than 98 pct of the zinc was recovered as zinc sulfate after 3 hours at 175° C. The reaction mixture was leached with simulated spent zinc electrolyte containing 13-pct sulfuric acid to recover zinc sulfate from the insoluble, high-sulfur residue. Neutral zinc sulfate, which is required for electrolysis, was separated from the sulfuric acid solution by crystallization as ZnS04?7H20 at -10° C. Up to 80 pct of the water in the recycled electrolysis solution was removed by the crystallization process; evaporation was used to further concentrate the sulfuric acid for reuse in leaching sphalerite. Advantages of the proposed method over conven-tional roasting and leaching include virtual elimination of sulfur dioxide, production of a solid sulfur byproduct, and higher zinc recoveries due to elimination of zinc ferrite losses.

One of the refining processes to which lubricating oils are frequently subjected effects a reduction in content of paraffin wax. The actual treatment usually involves chilling and filter pressing; the most important result accomplished from a commercial point of view is lowering of the ""cold test"" of the oil. The Bureau of Mines has recently had occasion to ascertain the effect of changes in paraffin wax content upon the viscosity of oil and has conducted a series of experiments described in the present report.Object of the present investigation:The Bureau of Mines has devised and is using a method for the analysis of crude petroleum* which includes determination of the viscosities of lubricating oil distillates. The Bureau method does not provide for preliminary removal of paraffin wax, and it has seemed advisable to determine whether this omission causes any important variation from the results that would be obtained through commercial refinery processing. It was also thought that the present tests, though limited in scope, might be of some practical value in indicating the general effect of paraffin content upon one of the most important properties of lubricating oil.Experimental procedureA five-gallon sample of Pennsylvania crude petroleum was distilled at atmospheric pressure until 50 per cent of the charge had been vaporized. Two liters of the residuum was distilled at a reduced pressure of 40 mm. (absolute) and cuts were separated that came over between the temperature limits of 250° to 275° C. (462° to 527° F.) and 275° to 300° C. (527° to 572° F.). The viscosities of these fractions were determined and they were subsequently subjected to treatment that removed successive percentages of paraffin wax. Viscosity temperature curves were determined for the oil obtained after each removal of wax.

Reduce dust at the auger mine face by modifying airflow patterns, around the minim machine. Approach Limited clearance between an auger miner and the mine root restricts airflow across the face and causes dust rollback. Directional sprays arc used to direct air across the face, thereby reducing dust rollback and increasing dust dilution (fig. 1). Laboratory and underground studies were used to test and optimize effectiveness of the directional sprays. Results of Laboratory Study Laboratory experiments were conducted in a simulated auger gallery equipped with a full-scale mock auger miner and bridge conveyor. A dual curtain configuration was used to direct the, ventilation, which averaged 2,700 cfm throughout the experiment. Testing variables included spray location, pressure, spacing, orientation, and number. Figure 2 shows the optimized directional spray system, also called the auger clearer spray system. The system consists of three sprays mounted alone the intake side of the miner. Sprays arc spaced 16 to 24 inches apart, and angled 30° toward the return side of the miner. The 24-inch spacing moved about 7% more air across the face than the 16-inch spacing; however, it resulted in some additional misting on the return side of the miner. A 30° orientation was more effective than a 60° orientation for moving air across the face and minimizing misting on the return side of the miner. Flat fan sprays arc used because their spray paths arc not obstructed by the top of the miner and mine roof, A 50° fan angle is used to minimize misting on the intake side of the miner.

Develop a method for control of groundwater inflow to chronically "wet" sections of underground coal mines, in order to reduce groundwater interference with mining activity and to minimize acid mine drainage. Approach In eastern coal regions, groundwater stored in fracture zones in the rock mass can create a significant water problem for underground mining operations. Fracture stored inflow to mine workings impedes mine productivity since storage water sources usually release at the active face, creating the poor mining conditions typical of a "wet" section. Fracture water can also contribute to AMD problems when the water subsequently contacts sulfide minerals in the coal, The Bureau of Mines has developed a mine-dewatering method that eliminates many of the problems associated with mine water inflow by draining these fracture zones before the water can reach the developing face and interfere with mining activity. How it Works The dewatering method removes large volumes of the stored groundwater through high-capacity pumping from a minimal number of wells placed strategically on fracture traces (the surface expressions of fractured rock zones). These fracture traces are located through low-level aerial photographic and geologic investigation. As shown on the map, dewatering wells are sited precisely on fracture trace intersections in order to take advantage of the increased pumping capacity gained from these zones of high permeability. Provide guidance on the selection of millisecond initiator delays between blastholes in surface mine blasting to provide a desired degree of rock fragmentation consistent with safety and vibration considerations. The Problem Blasting remains the primary means of fragmenting, rock for all kinds of mining, quarrying, construction, and excavation activities, and it is the only practical and economic method of breaking up and moving large amounts of material such as coal overburden and stone aggregate. Because of the large amount of blasting done, typically using 4 billion pounds of explosive to break about 8 billion tons of rock annually in the United States, a small improvement in blasting performance will have a significant productivity impact. Standard blasting practices involve the selection of time delays in a blast for at [cast three purposes: (1) to control energy flow to minimize adverse vibrations, (2) to provide sufficient time relief for good rock displacement, appropriate muck pile shape for digging, and the prevention of collar violence, misfires, and flyrock, and (3) to provide an appropriate amount of interhole stress wave and gas pressure action for a desired fragmentation size distribution. Timing guidelines that exist are based on subjective observations rather than measurements, even for the relatively new casting methods. Until this Bureau study, no definitive analysis had been done to quantify the fragmentation and productivity of full-scale blast rounds as functions of precision delay timing.

Legislation and Government Programs.-On February 4, 1977, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued its final environmental impact statement on the occupational use of inorganic arsenic.2 The statement examined the ramifications of the original proposed standard published in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS).3 The DEIS proposed to limit the exposure of employees to no more than 4 micrograms of arsenic per cubic meter of air as determined on an 8-hour-time-weighted average basis; or a ceiling limit of 10 micrograms of arsenic per cubic meter of air based on a 15 minute sampling period. The purpose of the proposed regulation is to reduce the risk of smelter workers developing lung and skin cancer as a result of exposure. A comprehensive study compiled by the Committee on Medical and Biologic Effects of Environmental Pollutants concluded that "there is strong epidemiologic evidence that inorganic arsenic is a skin and lung carcinogen in man."' In April 1977, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) served notice to ASARCO Incorporated that its Tacoma copper smelter and associated arsenic-producing facilities were in violation of State laws which limit sulfur dioxide and particulate matter emissions. This notice followed the Washington State Pollution Control Hearing Board overturning a prior ruling by the Puget Sound Air Pollution Control Agency (PSAPCA) which had permitted a 5-year variance from the State of Washington air quality standards. In December 1977, ASARCO appealed in court the decision of the Hearing Board.

Green River oil shale previously extracted by benzene was heated at 150°, 200°, 250°, 300°, and 350° C for 0.5 to 360 days to determine the rate at which kerogen degrades to thermal products, the types of thermal products formed, and the effect of prolonged low-temperature heating (preheating) upon subsequent assay yields. Thermal decomposition of kerogen at 150° to 350° C is treated as a first-order reaction. The specific reaction rate for kerogen decomposition increases from 2.2 X 10-4 per day at 150° C to 2.0 X 10-1 per day at 350° C. The calculated kerogen activation energy is 19 kcal. Variations in the rate of formation of individual type components of the pyrolytic products were found. Carbon balances show an increase in the amount of kerogen converted to bitumen and oil (from assay of preheated oil shale) as the temperature of preheating increased from 150° to 350° C. Total product from shale preheated at temperatures of 150° and 200° C gave less than 100 percent of Fischer assay yields while the total products from shale preheated at temperatures of 250° to 350° C gave greater than 100 percent of Fischer assay yields.

The Bureau of Mines has developed several techniques for draining methane from coalbeds in advance of mining. Drilling long horizontal holes from an underground location is one such technique, which was successfully demonstrated in the Pittsburgh and Sunnyside Coalbeds. The same technique has now been applied in the Mary Lee Coalbed at Jim Walter Resources, Inc. 's No. 4 Mine, Brookwood, Ala. , where two holes were drilled horizontally--one to a depth of 1,010 feet (308 m) and the other to 540 feet (165 m). The 1,010-foot (3083) hole proved successful in degasifying a portion of the Mary Lee Coalbed. The hole drained methane for 1 year, during which time the initial gas flow of 200,000 ft3/d (5,663 m3/d) declined to 65,000 ft3/d (1,840 m3/d). Total gas production was 40 x lo6 ft3 (1.1 x lo6 m3 ). The gas was of commercial quality, with 98 pct methane and a heat rating of 990 Btu/ft (36.89 Mj/m3). The methane emissions from the faces of the mine section advancing into the degasified zone were reduced by 60 pct. The 540-foot (165-m) hole was terminated prematurely when it became impossible to maintain an open hole. Because of caving, very little gas was drained through this hole.

"The Anhydrite ProblemThe Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment station of the Bureau of Mines at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N. J. has recently undertaken a study of the chemical and physical properties of anhydrite having in view its wider utilization anhydrite (CaSO4) in contact with water at ordinary temperature and pressure rehydrates, slowly forming gypsum (CaSO4.2H42O). In nature this is an extremely slow process, and laboratory experiments are being conducted to determine methods of accelerating the rehydration. The tests recorded herein cover one this study, and while they are negative in character in so far as the major problem is concerned, certain facts established by the tests, bearing on the stability relations of gypsum and anhydrite seem sufficiently important to be placed on record.Early Researches on Gypsum and Anhydrite.It is to Lavoisiar that we are the first scientific study of the calculation and hardening of plaster of Paris. He sums up his experiments in the following passage: ""If gypsum, which has been deprived of its water of by means of heat, is again treated with water (to make what is commonly called mortar) it takes it up with avidity, rapid and irregular crystallization occurs, and the small crystals which are formed are so entangled in each other that a very hard mass results."" Later, he observed that the dehydration of gypsum occurs in two stages: three-fourths of the combined water is much more easily driven out than the last fourth. LeChatalier first determined the temperature decomposition accurately, his method was as follows: Pulverized gypsum was placed in a glass tube in the middle of a paraffin bath, the temperature of which was raised in a progressive and regular manner. A thermometer gave at each instant the temperature the salt, and the passage of the mercury column past each division of —co. was cared by a registering chronograph. The rise in temperature was except at 128°C. and 168°C. where breaks occurred."
