"Silver occurs in about 200 minerals in variable amount s. Silver ores usually have 5 or 6 and in some instances as many as 10 species of silver minerals. All these minerals may have different flotation and leaching properties and should be correctly identified for successful recoveries. Grain size and host minerals which are critical in gold recovery, are not always as important for silver minerals.IntroductionMineralogical factors affecting the metallurgy of silver are , as for other metals: (i) the silver-bearing mineral s ; (ii) their grain size, and when dealing with very fine sizes; (iii) their host minerals; and (iv) the association they form with the silver-bearing minerals. Of these, the silver-bearing minerals are more often the cause of problems during recovery as opposed to gold whose metallurgy is generally more affected by grain size and host minerals. The problems derive mainly from the complexity of the silver mineralogy: over 200 minerals exist bearing the element in major, minor and variable amounts.As a member of group I-B of the periodic table, silver forms extensive so lid solutions with the other two elements in the same group , copper and gold. It combines with sulphur, tellurium and selenium in covalent bonds and with chlorine, bromine and iodine in ionic bonds. Where the fluid composition, temperature and pressure during crystallization allow it, silver also combines with arsenic, antimony, lead, bismuth, tin, mercury, indium, thallium, and germanium in many instances as a minor element in sulphide , sulphosalt and native element minerals. Cations which silver replaces to a lesser extent than copper and gold are iron, manganese, zinc and probably nickel and cobalt."

"Greater reliability of mineral deposit and reserve estimates can be attained through better quality control of the data and information acquisition, and the estimation processes. This paper reviews the following key requirements:1. greater awareness of the significant figures of both data and estimates, and better understanding of the probabilistic aspects of the estimates, their confidence limits and margins of error;2. greater reliability of the information that supports the estimates, by more explicit and more rigorous methods and standards for data acquisition and for interpretations;3. more quantitative estimations of geological/mineral continuity, based on improved three dimensional sampling patterns and the use of geostatistics; and 4. better integration at the project engineering and mine production stages, of the mineral deposit characteristics and mining method constraints, for more efficient mineral recovery and mine quality control.RÉSUMÉUne plus grande fiabilité des estimations des gisements et des réserves minières requiert plus d'emphase sur le contrôle de la qualité de I ‘acquisition de l'information et du processus d'estimation. "Laboratory and miniplant testwork was carried out to reject uranium from an Iron Oxide Copper Gold (IOCG) deposit that contains an average of 60-70 ppm uranium with high variability. The dominate copper bearing mineral is chalcopyrite with minor bornite and trace covellite. The main gangue minerals are iron-rich chlorite, quartz and magnetite. The main uranium-containing mineral is uraninite (UO2). Downstream processes require the maximum uranium level of no more than 80 ppm in final copper concentrate.Mineralogical examination reveals that uraninite particles are finely disseminated with grain size of less than a few microns in the deposit requiring fine regrind in order to liberate uraninite from chalcopyrite particles. A lab flowsheet was developed to include ultrafine regrind of the rougher concentrate to the particle size of 80% passing 11-13 µm with up to four stages of recleaning in flotation columns. Finer regrind to 80% passing 5-6 µm may continue to improve liberation but does not decrease uranium level in the final concentrate. In each of the successive recleaning stages by flotation column after fine regrind, uraninite is rejected into the column tailings, with the final copper gold concentrate containing less than 70 ppm uranium from a feed containing 83 ppm uranium. The conceptual flowsheet was further tested in an integrated, continuous miniplant showing average 94% copper recovery with average 74 ppm uranium. The uraninite particles that report to the final concentrate are either locked with chalcopyrite or entrained as liberated particles of less than 5 µm in size."

"Geophysical test surveys were conducted with various methods (EM, lP, gravity and magnetic) over the McClean uranium deposits of the Canadian Oxy- lnco Joint Venture. The result s were assessed to judge the contribution each method might make toward further discoveries of graphite-associated uranium occurrences.The best drill targets have proven to be discontinuities in graphitic conductors and locations where the tatter are intersected by fracture zones in the Athabasca. The tests demonstrated that the preferred combination of geophysical survey s is horizontal loop EM to locate graphitic conductors in the basement and VLF-EM to locate the fractures.IntroductionThe discoveries of the McClean North and South uranium deposit s (Fig. 1) are essentially geophysical successes resulting from drilling MaxMin delineations of INPUT airborne electromagnetic responses (Saracoglu et al., 1983). After the initial discovery in 1979, various geophysical methods, techniques and instruments were employed to test their effectiveness in this environment and to guide exploration for other deposit s of a similar nature in the remainder of the 260 km2 property.The McClean uranium deposits lie below 150 m to 180 m of overburden and Athabasca Group. Radioactive signatures might be expected; however, the Athabasca Group acts as a barrier to radioactive emanations. Fortunately, the uranium mineralization is associated with graphite in the crystalline basement. Prior drilling of ground electromagnetic anomalies confirmed that EM surveys could locate and out line basement graphitic conductors. However, as there were many anomalies, most of which could not reasonably be expected to be associated with uranium , there was need to identify additional parameters, related to mineralization, which could be detected geophysically and used to narrow the search."

"This paper presents a summary compilation of current Canadian coal research projects in the areas of exploration, mining and preparation. The compilation forms the basis for a review of present operations and technology, and of current research efforts. General research areas, requirements and priorities are suggested along with a discussion on achieving the research goals in terms of funds, facilities and staff. The current level of research funding in these areas is assessed. IntroductionCanada's coal production is expected to undergo major expansion over the next two decades in response to domestic demands on coal for electrical power generation, industrial uses and conversion to synthetic .fuels, and in response to export demands for both thermal and metallurgical coal s. Surface mining will continue to dominate, but underground mining will contribute an increasing proportion to total production.In Canada, coal research, particularly in the areas of exploration, mining and preparation (E, M & P), has been limited. Increased impetus has recently been given to this research with expansion of CANMET's activities and with the establishment of the Coal Mining Research Centre (CMRC). University researchers are branching into coal research; strata mechanics and preparation are popular in mining-related fields.With the increase in number of organizations and individuals involved in coal research, a means of keeping abreast of the ongoing work is necessary. An annual summary of the status of and developments in current research assists in providing this information. The CMRC prepared such a summary for Canadian coal E, M & P research in 1979 and it received favourable response, justifying the effort. A 1980compilation has been prepared and pro vides the basis for this paper; it is presented with a brief discussion on background, format and content.The compilation forms a basis for an examination of the current status of Canadian technology in E, M & P and of the ongoing research in each area. General research requirements are reviewed and programs and tasks are suggested, followed by a discussion of research goals in term s of priorities and achievement. An assessment is made of the level of research funding in Canada, with comparisons drawn from the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia."

"In previous publications by the author, significant advances and generalizations of the theory of sampling of broken ores, prompted and confirmed by experimental results, have been presented. This paper shows how to implement these theoretical results in practice. The models to be used are reviewed, with a description of the various sampling parameters involved. Then the methodology for the experimental assessment of those parameters, including segregation factors, is described in simple and practical terms, along with the use of handy sampling protocol charts. Finally, the particularly important case of processing data from a sample-tree experiment is detailed, and examples of applications covering all situations and types of experiments are provided.IntroductionThe reliability of a sample of crushed material , i.e. the expected (average) deviation between its true grade and the true grade of the lot it comes from, mostly depends upon six factors:• the size (mass) of the sample (and to a minor extent, for small lots, the size of the lot);• the size of the rock particles (degree of comminution)• the nature of the mineralization at microscopic scale (i.e., within even the smallest particles);• the geological nature of the mineralization and mineral of interest;• the grade of the lot in the mineral of interest; and• in some cases, the state of segregation of the lot.In practice, one should first disregard segregation problems, and assess sample variability in the segregation-free case. Once the numerical parameters governing this variability have been assessed, then segregation factors can be assessed in turn. In the case of laboratory standard sample preparation procedures, segregation can usually be disregarded altogether."

"A hydro-mechanical model was developed to study the interaction between mechanical deformation and fluid flow in the fault zones during CO2 injection and storage at the Heletz site which was chosen as a test site for CO2 injection experiments in the framework of the EU-MUSTANG project. The potential reservoir for CO2 storage at the Heletz site consists of three sand layers separated by lowpermeability shale layers. The potential consequences caused by fault reactivation, focusing on the shortterm integrity of CO2 storage, are evaluated. The difference in the results obtained by considering the three-layer as an equivalent layer storage formation is analyzed.INTRODUCTIONLarge-scale storage of CO2 in deep underground reservoirs may cause considerable pore-pressure perturbation as well as flux migration and concern has been raised over whether shear slip displacements may be induced in nearby faults, as a consequence of their reactivation. A state-of-the-art review can be found in Rutqvist (2012), which describes the various possible effects resulting from CO2 injection into a deep sedimentary basin, including those involved in reservoir stress–strain changes, micro-seismicity, caprock sealing performance, and potential fault reactivation. Moreover, several studies have recently shown how CO2 injection may produce seismic events both on major faults (i.e., large faults with large initial shear offset) (Cappa & Rutqvist, 2011a, b, 2012), and on minor faults that might have gone undetected during the site characterization, e.g., faults less than 1 km long and without detected initial offset (Mazzoldi et al., 2012).The present paper is concerned with the Heletz formation which was chosen as a test site for CO2 injection experiments in the framework of the EU-MUSTANG project. The Heletz site located at the southern Mediterranean coastal plain of Israel and the structure is an anticline fold with a crest of about 4 km by 2 km. The structure is gently dipping to the east, truncated by a pinch-out line to the west and subdivided into a number of blocks by transversal normal faults with small displacements. The water table is located at 300 m below the land surface. An areal sketch of the site with the elevation of the caprock and the location of the borehole that has been chosen for the CO2 injection experiment is presented in Figure 1."

"One of the most significant developments in environmental law has been the development of mandatory project review processes, at both the federal and provincial levels.FederalWhile, in the past, project review processes have, f or the most part, been spelled out in guidelines, the guidelines have not had the force of law. All that has changed, particularly at the federal level, with the Federal Court decisions commonly referred to as the Old Man River and Alameda and Rafferty Dam cases. These decisions, taken as a whole, are authority for the proposition that the Environmental Assessment and Review Process Guidelines Order, SOR 82-487 is a law of general application, not a mere guideline which may or may not be applied. This federal environmental assessment process first provides for a screening, and, depending upon the results of the screening process, the possibility of a public review. This federal process only applies, however, when the proposal is being undertaken by a federal department, or where the Government of Canada makes a financial contribution, or where federal lands are involved, or where a federal licence or permit is required.Bill C-78, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, will replace the Federal Environmental Assessment and Review Process Guidelines Order once it has been passed by Parliament. Currently the bill is being widely discussed, both between governments as well as public interest groups.ProvincialOn the provincial scene, there are three project review processes, one concerned with new mines, the second with energy projects and the third with all other major projects. The most recent initiatives taken by British Columbia are twofold. First, the Mine Development Review Process which was in the form of a guideline, has been replaced by the Mine Development Assessment Act. Second, the Major Project Review Process has been formulated and is to apply to four main categories of major projects:1. Pulp and paper production;2. Mineral smelting and refining;3. Chemical products; and4. Major ports and marinas.Energy projects are governed by the Energy Project Review Process which is legislatively mandated under the Utilities Commission Act."

"This paper briefly outlines the characteristics which should be considered in assessing the economics of mineral exploration, and illustrates such an assessment by using data from the Canadian base metal sector. Implications for the sector are found to include the following:(1) base metal exploration has the potential to create a substantial amount of new wealth;(2) investment incentive for exploration under current conditions is not unattractive over-all;(3) because of existing taxation policies, there is much more incentive for large companies to explore than for smaller enterprises;(4) succesful exploration is sensitive to the size, financial resources and organizational structure of the exploration entity;(5) the general level of recent exploration expenditures should be adequate to maintain the current rate of production and perhaps to support very modest growth; and(6) there is an important opportunity for growth in the sector.The findings of the study suggest that government policies should be made more flexible, in order to take into account the risks associated with exploration and with price fluctuations in the base metal sector. Recommendations are also made concerning improvements in provincial regulations for disclosure of exploration information."

"The recent opening of Muscocho's gold mine at Montauban, as weil as the discovery of several new copper-gold showings of a similar nature near the confluence of the Saguenay and St , Lawrence has revealed the existence of a new metallogenic gold province which is located within supercrustal units of Helikian age within the Grenville Province. Three metalliferous belts have been identified, each one of which is related to a series of SW-NE trending faults. The first is located in southeastern Ontario and southwestern Quebec. The second extends from the Balmat-Pierrepont mining district of New York State up to the Lac St. Jean region of Quebec, and includes the Montauban camp. The third follows the St. Lawrence river in Charlevoix County and along the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.The gold mineralization which is present in the central portion of the Grenville Province is of two types: either stratiform or vein. Deposits of the first type, of which the Muscocho is the type locality, are economically the more interesting of the two. Not only is this mineralization stratiform, but also shows a distinct affinity to AI-rich, Mg-rich or calc-silicate-rich bands. As is the case with the Bousquet and Hemlo regions of the Superior Province, they are associated with layers which are rich in sillimanite and occasionally staurolite. A second parallel between the Bousquet and Montauban deposits might be the presence of manganesian gamets, which have been recognized at the two localities. Some of the mineralization in the central Grenville Province is located within thin bands of iron formation which are rich in arsenic.The stratiform gold deposits of the central Grenville Province are of exhalative origin and are located within a volcano-sedimentary terrane. It is probable that a part of the gold present in these Helikian deposits have been derived by remobilization of Archean mineralization. The vein showings form as a consequence of the remobilization of the Helikian strata during the Grenville metamorphism,"

"The fluidized bed at Division Ministro Hales (DMH) division of Codelco in Calama, Chile is currently the largest operating roaster for partial roasting of arsenic rich copper concentrates. The roaster converts the Mina Ministro Hales (MMH) enargite rich (Cu3AsS4) copper concentrates into calcine with a low arsenic content that is suitable for mixing with other copper concentrates feeding a flash furnace. The plant sets a new standard for the processing of arsenic rich concentrates, both from the quality of the calcine as well as the environmental performances. The process technology and expertise are based on the solid practical experience of treating arsenic rich concentrates from both the Boliden smelter and Outotec.The partial roasting process is located next to the mine and concentrator and includes a sulphuric acid plant with auxiliary equipment. The produced calcine has an arsenic content significantly below target and the residual sulphur meets the requirement of the flash furnace. The plant operates with high efficiency cyclones resulting in a low amount of calcine passing to the hot electrostatic precipitator (HESP). The small flow of HESP calcine dust can be combined with the low arsenic calcine and still meet the flash furnace feed arsenic requirements.SO2 formed during roasting is converted into sulphuric acid, while volatized arsenic is recovered in the wet gas cleaning section of the acid plant along with a large proportion of antimony present in the MMH concentrate. Arsenic is stabilized as calcium arsenate and sent to disposal at a specially prepared site.The present production rate (September/October 2015) is close to or higher than the original maximum design capacity of the plant.INTRODUCTIONMineralogyThe mineralogy of an ore and concentrate is important, since there is a direct link between roasting performance and concentrate mineralogy. The MMH concentrate has a good combination of minerals that makes the roasting process efficient and flexible. The main minerals are pyrite, enargite and chalcocite (Figure 1). The inert content is about 15% and consists mainly of silicate and alumina based minerals. The lead content is very low and this is desirable, since the presence of even a small amount of lead will cause a substantial increase of sintering during roasting."

"The Guide to the Evaluation of Gold Deposits reviews the successive evaluation steps in the domains of geology, engineering, and economics. The Guide analyzes, in a systemic perspective, the sequence of exploration, development, and evaluation work required to bring a mineral deposit to production. The aim is to identify the metal/mineralization losses and ore dilution that each work step contributes to the evaluation and mining process. The procedure allows one to maximize the income and profits of a mining operation, and to reduce the risks of financial losses tied to investment decisions in the mining sector. For greater efficiency, the criteria of reserve estimation and classification should be integrated with the evaluation steps and methods. At earlier stages of deposit development, when quantitative knowledge is available mainly on the geological axis, the term ""delimited mineral deposit"" should be used. The term ""reserve"" should be used only in an operating mine or in a mining project, when information in the geological, engineering, and economic domains is adequate to ensure technical and financial feasibility. ""Reserves"" are by definition ""mining reserves"". Each category of proven/probable reserves and measured/indicated deposits should be subdivided into two classes to express better the many steps of mineral valuation. The category of ""possible reserves"" shall be replaced by that of ""inferred mineralization"". This system, derived from the Australasian Code, can easily be integrated into current practices of the exploration and mining industry within a short timeframe. The proposal to develop the use of the margins of error of the estimates at a confidence level of90% should be viewed in a longer timeframe. Establishing the precision of the mineral inventories and distinguishing between categories and classes by means of the margin of error will require more work and a longer break-in period.SOMMAIRELe ""Guide d’évaluation des gisements d'or"" analyse, dans une approche systémique, les travaux d'évaluation et de mise en valeur des gisements minéraux dans l'axe de la géologie, dans l'axée l'ingénierie et dans I ‘axe de l'économique. Plusieurs essais démontrent que le système propose, qui s'inspire du Code australasien, peut facilement et rapidement s'intégrer dans les pratiques de l'industrie. II pourrait également contribuer à une standardisation des méthodes et des nomenclatures à l'échelle internationale. "A laboratory and field research program was conducted to investigate the major factors influencing bond capacity of grouted cable bolts. The results indicate that cable bolt capacity most critically depends on the grout uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), the radial confinement, and the embedment length.In the laboratory &apos;split-pipe&apos; tests were conducted using P VC, aluminum and steel pipes to provide radial confinement, and field test sites were chosen in granite, limestone and shale rock masses. For both datasets higher capacities were obtained under conditions of higher radial confinement. A correlation between the two was obtained through a comparison of the radial wall stiffness of the laboratory pipes with that of the field boreholes as measured using a high pressure dilatometer. Cable bolt capacity was found to increase with embedment length though not in direct proportionality.The use of low water cement ratio grouts (<0.40) can increase cable bolt capacities by 50% to 75%. This effect is maximized under conditions of high radial confinement. However, the use of super thick grout paste (0.30 and less) may be both impractical and undesirable, first because of their limited pumpability and second because of their inconsistency in strength. Grouts with a water cement ratio of between 0.35 and 0.40 are recommended for practical cable bolt applications."

Shore Gold Inc. (Shore) is presently designing a diamond processing plant for the Star and the Orion South kimberlite deposits in the Fort à la Corne area kimberlite field in central Saskatchewan. The first step in the plant is diamond liberation and occurs in the comminution section. Diamond liberation is the process of breaking up the kimberlite rock, as ?gently? as possible since essential to the diamond liberation process is the minimization of diamond damage, particularly for the larger, high value diamonds. The Southern African diamond mines traditionally use Jaw and Gyratory crushers as their primary comminution method. However, these diamond mines generally process the harder, competent kimberlite that is located in the diatreme zone as well as the root zone of the volcanic pipe. Softer kimberlite is typically located in and around the crater area of a volcanic pipe and it is this source of kimberlite that makes up the majority of kimberlite for both the Star and Orion South deposits. These softer kimberlites can be readily broken up using abrasion and attrition imparted by AG mills, this being the preferred method of comminution for minimizing diamond damage.

Presence of fine dust in air causes serious health hazard for mine operators resulting in such serious problems as coal workers? pneumoconiosis and silicosis. Major sources of dust appear of course along the mining face where the minerals are extracted. Proper control and management are required to ensure safe working environment in the mine. Presented here is the use of a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) approach to investigate the flow and dust behaviour in mining tunnels. The objective of this study is to propose and examine various strategies to mitigate dust dispersion from the mining face and reduce dust concentration to a safe level for the operator. In a companion study, the authors investigated various methods for mitigating dust dispersion from the mining face to ensure safe dust concentration levels in the mine tunnel. Among the examined methods, implementation of brattice to direct the flow from the main airway to the mining face is the most effective method to disperse dust particles away from the mining face. The installation of brattice, however, will limit the movement of mine operators and vehicles in the tunnel. Hence, application of a hybrid brattice which is a combination of a physical brattice along with suitable directed and located air curtains is proposed and examined. Based on the CFD simulation results, over a range of parameters of interest, it was found that the physical brattice blocks the ventilation air and directs it to the mine face while an air curtain located along the brattice outlet offers flexibility in keeping the dust away from the operator allowing more freedom for the operator and the equipment. Results of the modelling over a range of parameters of interest are presented and discussed with the goal of managing dust concentrations within safe limits for the operator.

Tooth wear on mining shovels presents a challenge for productivity. A shovel with worn teeth suffers from increased digging forces, longer fill times, and an increased likelihood of lost or broken teeth and adapters. Efficient maintenance planning relies on knowledge of tooth decay rates and patterns. A fully automated wear monitoring system can record detailed logs of tooth wear, permitting G.E.T. personnel to optimize maintenance scheduling. Studies have demonstrated that planned tooth change-outs result in significantly reduced costs as compared to unplanned maintenance. A machine-vision-based tooth-wear monitoring method is introduced. A rugged camera is installed on the boom of cable shovels, or on the stick of hydraulic shovels. The images are processed using a photogrammetric algorithm to determine the individual tooth lengths. Tooth length data is collected at intervals during shovel operations, forming a profile of the current wear state, speed of decay, wear pattern, and expected lifespan of teeth. A case study in a South American mine on a Komatsu PC8000 hydraulic front shovel is presented. Tooth wear is tracked over a 6-day period and wear rate statistics are computed for 6 teeth. This validates the system and provides an example of how wear patterns can be recorded and analysed by an automatic system. Armed with this data, mine personnel can reduce the cost and lost time due to unplanned maintenance, and observe the effects of mine conditions and operator behaviour on tooth wear.

"Test work was carried out to investigate the thermal response of loose and solid rock under varying environmental conditions. The primary interest was to develop a technique that could be used to increase the thermal variation between loose and solid rock for better detectability of loose rock underground with a thermal imaging infrared scanner.A variety of thermal enhancement methods were evaluated both in the laboratory and in the mine environment. Air temperature variation created by the exhaust from diesel driven, mobile mining machinery was studied in detail. When sufficient hot exhaust was supplied to the air, unsteady thermal conditions became more pronounced on the rock surf ace. This allowed a greater percentage of loose rock to be detected by a high-resolution infrared scanner within minutes.The degree of thermal enhancement of loose rock was found to be dependent directly on the thermal conductivity of rock, looseness, air temperature change, and inversely on the size of loose, airflow rate and distance downwind from the heat source. It was also found that an air temperature rise of at least r c, or rock temperature differential of1°C was necessary for minimal thermal enhancement required f or infrared detection."

"In 1982, a study was initiated to investigate relationships between bonus and accidents in Quebec underground mines. In 1983, the study was expanded to include the impact of age and experience on accidents.The paper will describe the methodology followed in gathering information at ten mines from three mining camps in the Province of Quebec, and its transfer to data banks for subsequent treatment. Multifactorial analysis of nine variable files for the ten mines has shown: that age, experience and seniority are linked; that total working hours are tied with overtime; that bonus is linked to the main activity of the miner, and not to accidents. The most tangible factors affecting accidents seem to be the introductory training and subsequent retraining at regular intervals."

A brief review is made of geology, level of technology, management and labour situations, and range of production costs in coal producing countries. This comparison shows keen competition for Canadian coals, especially from the People&apos;s Republic of China, South Africa and Australia. Domestic competition comes from nuclear energy, hydro-electric generation, natural gas (if permitted) and eastern United States coal.The huge increase in the size and power of surface mining equipment in the last forty years led to modern large-scale open pit mining. While conventional truck and shovel operations will continue to be widely used, more continuous mining and conveying systems will be installed as pits become deeper and haul distances longer. Computer systems will become more sophisticated and their applications more widespread, leading to higher productivity and closer control of all operations and equipment performances and to partial or complete automation of certain operations.The underground revival will be driven by a new generation of mining people, cooperating to produce over 3 million t/y from 300 m longwall faces retreating over 3 km resulting in mine productivities of over 40 tonnes per man shift, as is already achieved in several mines throughout the world. Continuous operation using on-line control system will assist in consistent production with availabilities over 75%."
