"This paper describes some energy reduction measures Implemented at the Griffith Mine. Before proceeding, I will give you a brief overview of the operation.The Griffith Mine is an iron ore mining, concentrating and Pelletizing complex located in the red lake area of northwestern Ontario. The operation is owned by Stelco Inc. And is managed By Pickands Mather & Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. Operation of the concentrator commenced in 1968 and it has been producing at a nominal capacity of 1,500 ,000 tons annually.The plant flow sheet is illustrated in this slide. Run of the mine ore is crushed in a single stage 54"" gyratory crusher. Reclaim ore feeders draw from an open stockpile to feed two 32' diameter by 12' long autogenous mills, each driven by 6800 hp. Two s·rages of wet magnetic separation, roughers and cleaners, and primary cyclones complete the primary circuit. Cleaner concentrate is then ground in four 14' diameter by 28' long pebble mills rated at 2000 hp. The secondary grinding circuit is closed by cyclones and fine screens. Secondary cyclone overflow is further upgraded through hydro-separators, finisher magnetic separators and flotation.The magnetic concentrate produced is then thickened, filtered, balled and fired in three vertical shaft furnaces to produce a high quality hematite pellet."

"This paper discusses the project history, process design and layout of the Rainy River Gold Project mill. The circuit consists of a 55 x 83 primary crusher, 15 MW SAG mill and 15 MW ball mill. Both mills are twin pinion with LSS and VFD drives. A pebble crusher is located in the process plant with bypass and stockpile options. Gravity concentration followed by 30 hours of leach residence, carousel CIP, carbon recovery, cyanide destruction and tails disposal in a 1,428 hectare tailings management area (TMA).The Rainy River Gold Project is located approximately 65 km northwest of Fort Frances in north western Ontario. The project is scheduled to be commissioned and reach commercial production in mid-2017. Expected cost is $US877M and is comprised of an open pit mine, process plant, tailings management area and supporting infrastructure. "The Caribou underground mine, 50 km west of Bathurst, the Restigouche open-pit mine, another 30 km west and the concentrator located at the Caribou mine site resumed operations in July 2007 after a nine year shutdown. The Caribou operations achieved commercial production on Jan 1. By June, 2008, all metallurgical targets had been achieved or surpassed with the production of lead and zinc concentrates assaying approximately 50% Zn and 45% Pb respectively with recoveries exceeding 80% for Zn and 70% for Pb.The deposit features very fine-grained massive sulphide mineralization, which in the past has proven difficult to process. ISA Mill Ultra Fine Grinding Technology in combination with conventional flotation technology is used to process these complex oresSeveral modifications arising from experience gained from past operations, an extensive research project at Lakefield Research and post startup flow sheet and reagent alterations have been employed to achieve this break through performanceThis paper describes the design, start up and optimization of the Caribou operations including the many challenges faced including the flotation of mineral particles with K80s ranging from 35µm to 8µm.HISTORICAL BACKGROUNDThe Caribou massive sulphide deposit was discovered by Anaconda geologist Cam Cheriton in 1959. Anaconda initiated an extensive underground exploration and discovered a super gene copper blanket which was developed into a small open-pit mine-mill operation that ran from 1970 until the depletion of the copper ore in 1974. East West Minerals, an Australian public company, purchased the mine in 1986 and operated for only seven months producing a single bulk lead-zinc concentrate. In 1995, Breakwater acquired the Restigouche Open pit and Caribou underground deposits. Breakwater began milling operations in July 1997 but Caribou Mine failed to commercialize production, and the company decided to shut it down in August 1998, because of declining metal prices. The mill was plagued by mechanical and design problems, but deficiencies in metal recoveries prevented the operation from reaching desired levels."

The Duparquet mining camp situated along the Quebec segment of the Porcupine-Destor Fault was the site of gold exploitation from 1933 to 1956 and 1988 to 1991. Numerous gold showings and deposits straddle the fault. An ongoing regional metallogenic study by the Quebec Geological Survey has identified five main types of gold mineralization, each showing a distinct style, alteration, control, metal content, and timing. In order to maximise the impact of this study, a 3D regional common-earth-model was constructed along a critical segment of the Porcupine-Destor Fault with the gOcad® technology. The realisation of this model required the maximum use of the public SIGEOM numerical database, as well as the recovery of significant private data from exploration company partners. The 3D model is also a powerful new dynamic exploration tool, which can be queried using geological criteria characteristic of the different gold deposit types. This 3D model can be modified and improved continuously by adding data from new drilling, mapping or geophysical surveys. The case of the Porcupine-Destor Fault illustrates the importance of 3D common-earth-modelling in delivering refined technological geological syntheses likely to attract significant investments from the mining exploration industry, especially for deep exploration programs within mature mining camps.

"This paper describes the general layout of the environmental monitoring scheme at Devco 's No. 26 Colliery, including wall face ventilation, fan performance and methane drainage, and then goes on to discuss the sensors, the outstation layout, the surf ace control room and the protection of the system.IntroductionCape Breton coal mines have been pioneers in the use of the latest technology in mining coal on this continent. To mention just one example, continuous methane monitoring at the coal face was started in 1976 and the idea of automatically stopping the face conveyor during high gas levels using the face signalling system was conceived and developed by CBDC engineers.With the introduction of remote environmental monitoring, No. 26 Colliery will be the first underground coal mine in Canada and possibly in North America to have computer-based comprehensive environmental monitoring.Traditionally, surveillance of the mine environment has been based mainly on periodic checks by portable or hand-held monitors. Although this method proved adequate, it has some limitations, namely:1) restricted 'number of observations and samples;2) relatively long time between taking measurements and availability of results for assessment.With remote monitoring, the above limitations are overcome because (a) monitoring is continuous and (b) monitored data are updated quickly (typically 5-7 sec.). Remote monitoring also provides a centralized 'information center' at the surface from where the entire mine environment can be monitored. Details of modes in which data can be displayed and features available at the location will be discussed later in the paper."

"Much progress has been made over the last several years in the ability to measure flotation cell hydrodynamic parameters in both the laboratory and plant. These techniques have allowed fundamental research to proceed to determine the effects that frother chemistry has on the main hydrodynamic parameters (gas hold up, bubble size) as well as on the amount of froth generation and water content of froth. A research program was begun that brought together a team consisting of private companies and a University with expertise in hydrodynamic characterization (McGill), flotation reagent applications (Flottec) and chemical synthesis (Sasol N.A.) with the purpose of characterizing frother chemistries with two goals in mind: Determine which frother chemistry can provide optimized cell hydrodynamics; and, create new frother chemistries with specific hydrodynamic properties.This paper describes the key steps that were taken that led to the development of new frother chemistry for use in flotation.The first step was the characterization of the major frother chemical families in a two phase system. The parameters measured were gas hold up, bubble size, froth height and water carrying rate at different concentrations and gas velocities.Analysis of the data indicated that definite patterns existed between frother chemistry and hydrodynamics and showed that frothers could be grouped into classes. More importantly, by modifying known frothers through chemical reaction it was shown that these frothers could be moved from one class to another. As a result of this better understanding of the interdependence of hydrodynamic and chemical properties, a new frother chemistry was proposed that was predicted to perform similarly to MIBC.The new frother was synthesized and hydrodynamic testing confirmed that the chemical performed similar to MIBC. Laboratory flotation tests were conducted on two different ore types that also confirmed the similar performance of the new chemical and MIBC. Subsequently, the new product was placed on a plant for a short period of time. The results showed that the product was an excellent frother but increased the flotation rate slightly more than MIBC at the same addition rate.Further research showed that the new frother chemistry was a family of products. By changing the reaction the resultant products could be made to be slightly weaker or stronger than MIBC but that this chemistry cannot provide hydrodynamic/froth characteristics similar to strong frothers like glycols and glycol ethers. Further work is planned to conduct longer plant trials to confirm the efficacy of this new frother family."

"The Cinola gold deposit in the northern Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, is in a clastic sequence consisting of a lower shale of the Late Cretaceous Haida Formation and an overlying interbedded sequence of pebble conglomerate and coarse-grained sandstone of the Middle Miocene Skonun Formation. Both formations are intruded by a stock and dykes of porphyritic rhyolite. Two K-Ar model ages indicate mineralization and probably porphyritic-rhyolite intrusion at about 14 Ma (middle Miocene). A splay of the Sandspit fault system constitutes the footwall on the west of the deposit.The Cinola deposit can be classed as Carlin-type based on features such as (1) small particle size for gold, (2) Tertiary age of mineralization, (3) element abundances (e.g. high Hg), (4) dominantly argillic alteration, (5) a structural setting associated with major faults, (6) porosity of the host rock and (7) spatial and possibly genetic association with felsic intrusions. Gold is widespread and occurs mainly as grains of< 0.5 11-m in silicified sedimentary rock, and in quartz veins. Locally, coarse > 100 11-m particles of native gold occur in quartz veins, especially in strongly brecciated porphyritic-rhyolite. Ore minerals are mainly pyrite and marcasite, but include small amounts of chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, pyrrhotite, cinnabar, tiemannite (HgSe), rutile, magnetite, hematite and limonite in addition to native gold and electrum. No silver minerals have been found; silver was found in gold particles in amounts varying from 6.2 to 24.2 weight per cent. Alteration products are sericite, illite, kaolinite and chlorite, with abundant quartz of several stages.The host rocks, specifically the Skonun Formation, formed as an alluvial plain facies in a braided river system discharging into a marine basin in early Middle Miocene time. During the Middle Miocene, this sequence was intruded by a rhyolitic stock. The highly porous and permeable Miocene clastic sequence apparently provided an optimum setting for the development of a large geothermal system, the energy for which probably derived from the rhyolite stock. Mineral deposition followed a well-defined paragenesis, which, from oldest to youngest, is: (1) precipitation of iron sulphide minerals, and early quartz; (2) several stqges of quartz veins, with deposition of sphalerite succeeded by galena, chalcopyrite and visible gold. Micron-size gold was precipitated throughout these two stages of mineral deposition. Argillitization of the host rocks probably in part coincided with the mineralization and continued during cooling of the geothermal cell.In-situ reserves have been estimated at 41.1 million metric tons averaging 1.85 g Au/tonne using a cutoff grade of0.86 g Au/ tonne."

"This paper describes novel methods to enhance the flow dynamics of a mechanical flotation cell that can be applied to an existing installation. There are several reasons to alter the flow dynamics. The most common motivation is to improve the metallurgical performance of the cell, for instance, to improve the flotation recovery in particle size ranges that are normally difficult to recover.The flow dynamics enhancements are associated with the geometry of the rotor-stator area and additional features in the tank. The rotor-stator area has been modified to provide more concentrated turbulent kinetic energy or respectively more pumping efficiency with less attrition to the slurry. The tank can be fitted with various geometrical features, aimed to create a desired particle suspension profile. Depending on the targeted particle size range and application, badly selected or designed features can also have a negative effect on the metallurgical results.Besides new flotation equipment, the enhancements can be applied to existing flotation cell installations, thus enabling improvements in the mixing profiles, solids suspension, tank sanding and metallurgical performance of operating flotation circuits. Results of several tests carried out in existing plant operations are presented, concerning both flow variables and metallurgy.The common factor to above-mentioned enhancements is the use of modern computational fluid dynamics tools in the design phase, as well as the validation of the obtained CFD results in laboratory and production scale. Validated variables include mixing profile, power draw and local air hold-up.The paper demonstrates the effects of various flow geometries on the mixing profiles and metallurgical results of existing mechanical flotation cells. It shows how modern computational fluid dynamics analysis can be used to screen and select different approaches before carrying out costly trial-and-error experiments in plant scale."

For many years, sulfuric acid producers all over the world have been forced to meet ever more strict environmental regulations to reduce SO2 emissions. The sulfuric acid industry has implemented new solutions in order to comply with the new lower SO2 emissions target. Haldor Topsoe (Topsoe) has responded to this challenge by continuously improving the range of VK sulfuric acid catalysts and providing tailor-made catalyst solutions to meet the demands of the sulfuric acid producers for lower SO2 emissions. Reducing emissions through catalysis: requires less capital than installing a scrubber, requires no additional process chemicals, generates no waste or by-product to dispose of. In 1996 Topsoe introduced VK69, a cesium-promoted vanadium catalyst, designed for operation in the pass(es) after the intermediate absorption tower in double absorption plants. The high activity of VK69 allows for a more than 50% reduction in SO2 emissions from existing double-absorption plants. Topsoe currently has more than 110 installations of VK69. To comply with the still more stringent regulations being placed on the sulfuric acid industry to lower SO2 emissions, Topsoe has developed a new sulfuric acid catalyst designated VK-701 LEAP5™. This catalyst was introduced to the market in 2010. VK-701 LEAP5™ is based on a novel technology which circumvents the internal transport deficiencies of existing commercial sulfuric acid catalysts and thereby offers exceptionally high activity in strong, SO3 rich gases. Sulfuric acid plants have used this catalyst to meet emissions requirements lower than previously believed possible with a catalyst only solution. This paper will present examples on how to reduce emissions by implementing a tailor-made catalyst solution using VK69 and VK-701 LEAP5™.

"Decisions regarding mining method and subsequent choice of excavator must take into account the quantitative factors of productivity, availability, and capital, operating, and maintenance costs. Dig performance was compared between a hydraulic excavator (HE) and electric rope shovel (RS) of similar size class (i.e., use the same amount of energy to excavate a unit quantity of the same material from a mining face), focusing on the quantitative factors above. Machine performance, normalized to bucket capacity, was assessed as a function of hours of service (60,000 hours per machine). Results showed higher production rates for the HE of similar capacity and age. In general, the RS exhibited lower service cost per volume capacity, though it had higher capital cost. "Cut-and-fill mining is a stoping method that has been widely utilized in the mining industry over the past forty years. It took preference over shrinkage methods at Levack in the early 1930sbecause of its safety aspects; i.e., prompt support of the stope sidewalls, good working floors and better accessibility to support poor back areas. In addition, higher recoveries of ore were possible because of the flexibility of the method in that silling could take place easily at any horizon; low-grade ore could be sorted and left in the stope as fill and certain zones of rock could be left unmined. With modern techniques, a steady production rate can be established, as filling and mining can be carried out stimultaneously.AIthough there are numerous variations of cut-and-fill mining throughout the world, this paper reviews the original type of mining, with modifications and improvements through the years to present modern practices, with the Levack West operation appearing to be the most productive at this time. Stoping efficiencies have also increased substantially from the original 10 tons per manshift to the present 55 tons per manshift.The paper also outlines the many improvements that have been made with respect to mucking and ground support operations; from hand mucking in a single stope to the use of frontend loaders and haulage trucks in fully accessible stope complexes; and from timber props to roof bolts of various types. Although present methods are extremely satisfactory, experimentation is continually being conducted to improve safety and productivity for future mining.IntroductionThe major mining operations of the Ontario Division of Inco Limited are located in the Sudbury Basin (Fig. 1). Around the rim of this geological formation and within 30 miles of the City of Sudbury are nine producing mines and one &apos; open pit operated by the company .Ore production currently approximates 11.5 million tons per annum from underground and open-pit operations. Underground mining methods include sub-level caving, shrinkage, cut and fill, undercut and fill, blasthole and vertical retreat. The Levack Complex, the main plant of which is the central Levack Mine, produces 11,000 tons per day.The first prospecting in the Levack area, in 1887, was conducted by James Stobie, who examined rock cuts along the route of the Canadian Pacific Railway to the northwest of Sudbury. However, it wasn&apos;t until 1913 that operations commenced at Levack under the Mond Nickel Company."

"Crushing and grinding of ores and their beneficiation by washing away gangue minerals has been practiced since ancient times. Primitive crushing was done by hand pounding the ore with a hard stone then by using metallic hammers. The mortar and pestle was mechanized using a lever and when the size of operations increased in the middle ages, the stamp mill was introduced. The grindstone played an important role in grinding of ores. Panning for gold and hand sorting of minerals were two old methods of separation, now gave way to modern techniques. Flotation started in the middle of the nineteenth century by using oils to collect the mineral particles and float them on the surface of the aqueous slurry. It was only in the 1920s when it was discovered that organic compounds were affective floating agents. Textbooks written by distinguished engineers such as Rittinger, Rickard, Pryor, Taggart, Richards, Gaudin, and others contributed to the recognition of this field as a new discipline to be taught in Universities. INTRODUCTIONThe ancient Egyptians knew already that it would be easier to melt an earth rich in gold particles than another which is poor. As a result all efforts were made to enrich the gold by washing away the light gangue minerals (Figure 1). Another ancient method for enriching gold particles from a river stream was by means of fleece, hence the Greek myth of the “golden fleece”. The present day Georgia was known in ancient times as Colchis and was a center for gold working. It was known to the ancient Greek as the land of Golden Fleece. The use of special cloth to catch gold particles was also described by Agricola in his 1555 book De Re Metallica (Figure 2)."

"This paper revisits data from previous studies (Hernandez-Aguilar, 2010, 2011) to better understand the link between metallurgical performance and pulp-zone bubble size (Db) in full-scale flotation systems. To obtain conclusive evidence exclusively related to the pulp (collection) zone, the experiments were designed in those studies to control both the bubble generation method and the influence of the froth zone on the overall metallurgical performance in industrial and pilot-scale flotation columns. The results showed that Db had a significantly larger effect on the recovery of coarse (> 75 µm) particles compared to the effect on fine (< 16 µm) particles. It was observed that, under certain practical conditions, the recovery of coarse particles was close to zero, but dramatically increased by reducing Db. The evidence revealed an inconsistency of the so-called “k–PSb” model: at constant froth recovery, increasing Sb (i.e., the rate of production of bubble surface area) did not always result in higher recovery, as the model predicts. Furthermore, the evidence showed that it was not the Sb but the bubble size that proved to be a more reliable link to metallurgical performance. Only in the presence of suboptimal-sized bubbles (Db > 2 mm) did the froth zone seem to play a role, possibly reflecting an effect of pulp-zone bubble size on froth stability. However, the role of the froth was negligible for Db < 1 mm.High-resolution mineralogical measurements performed on process samples revealed that, regardless of the degree of liberation, Db had a profound effect on the shape of the recovery-by-size curve, particularly the coarse particle size fraction. This observation is key as it implies that the loss in efficiency associated with floating the coarse particles was not the result of neither particle hydrophobicity nor particle detachment issues: even in the absence of mechanical agitation, liberated and highly hydrophobic coarse particles did not seem to attach to the bubbles in the first place, an inefficiency that was corrected by reducing bubble size. The data analysis suggests that poor attachment efficiency can practically affect both fine and coarse particles but via different mechanisms which are discussed here."

THESE forums have been held annually since they were introduced by Mr. L. E. Djingheuzian in 1957. The response of millmen to questionnaires such as the one this year is ample evidence of the interest these create. This year's topic is unlike those of past years since it is an attempt to understand a new concept of grinding rather than to improve the old. Before, we were thinking in terms of 2-5 cents improvement in grinding costs, now we will be discussing savings of 15-2 5 cents. As a background for this forum we will begin by summarizing the major controversial issues relating to grinding with steel, many of which will undoubtedly apply to pebble milling. Our •task to-day is to learn what has already been done in pebble milling and obtain a fair overall view of this method of grinding.

Une autre alternative d?utilisation du remblai en pâte consiste à le pomper et à le stocker dans des empilements de surface. En plus d?avoir des avantages d?un point de vue de stabilité physique des ouvrages, le remblai en pâte cimenté en surface permettrait également de stabiliser les contaminants dans la matrice du remblai à l?aide du processus de solidification et de stabilisation. Dans cette étude, des remblais en pâte constitués d?un résidu minier sulfuré renfermant beaucoup d?arsenic et de différents liants ont été testés afin d?évaluer la stabilisation des contaminants dans la matrice de remblai. La méthode utilisée pour évaluer la stabilisation et la solidification des contaminants est le test de lixiviation en extracteur de Soxhlet. Les résultats géochimiques issus de ces essais ainsi que la caractérisation chimico-minéralogique des remblais lixiviés ont été analysés pour comprendre les phénomènes chimiques présents dans les remblais durant le temps de cure. Les résultats obtenus montrent que les sulfures présents dans les remblais étudiés (pyrite FeS2 et arsénopyrite FeAsS) s?oxydent et provoquent la dissolution des hydrates les plus vulnérables (dissolution de la portlandite Ca(OH)2 et/ou décalcification des gels CSH). Le calcium produit permet de précipiter les sulfates (essentiellement sous forme de gypse plus ou moins hydraté) et l?arsenic sous forme d?arséniates de calcium plus stables. Les différents liants utilisés donnent des résultats différents en termes de stabilisation et de solidification qui seront discutés dans cet article.

"In recent years the recovery of copper from low grade oxide ores has received widespread attention. The cost of treating such ores using conventional technology, such as milling and flotation, is frequently prohibitively high and copper recovery is generally low. The introduction of heap leaching, solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) has resulted in high recoveries, good copper cathode quality and low production costs. This technology has now been successfully applied on a worldwide basis.This paper reviews the various process and design options and gives approximate capital and operating costs for a 1.0% copper ore.INTRODUCTIONAs a result of the low copper prices that prevailed for much of the last two decades, aggressive attempts were made by the industry to cut operating costs. Under such circumstances heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning, to recover low cost copper from oxide ores, has received particular attention and ultimately widespread acceptance.Low grade copper ore (typically containing less than 1.0% Cu), which could not be economically treated by other methods, is placed on heaps and leached with dilute solutions of sulphuric acid. The copper rich, pregnant solution, drains from the heap into a collecting pond and is pumped to a solvent extraction plant where it is purified and upgraded. The resulting solution, termed the pregnant electrolyte, passes to the electrowinning section where the copper is recovered as high grade cathodes and sulphuric acid is regenerated, (Figure 1).This paper specifically describes the processing of copper oxides. Other copper minerals such as chalcocite and chrysocolla are also leached by dilute solutions of sulphuric acid. In practice the oxide minerals are frequently associated to varying degrees with less easily leached sulphides, such as chalcopyrite. In some cases, once the oxidized capping of the ore body is removed, the oxides are totally replaced by more refractory sulphides. Under these circumstances the leaching recovery is significantly reduced. However the principles described here for solvent extraction and electrowinning are also applicable to solutions received from heaps containing sulphide minerals, which are leached more slowly and involve bacterially induced reactions."
