The effects of temperature, grain size, and magnesium content on the strength and ductility of cadmium were studied in the range -269° to 23 °C. A sharp drop in ductility between -140° and -190°C marked a transition in fracture mode from ductile shear to inter gvanular fracture. The addition of up to 15.35 wt pct Mg in solid solution raised the transition temperature, and for two compositions produced basal cleavages. The relatively high ductility of unalloyed cadmium at cryogenic temperatures is attributed to temperature independence of the yield stress and the absence of dislocation locking. ALTHOUGH numerous studies have been made of the mechanical properties of cadmium single crystals,1-5 no comprehensive investigation of deformation and fracture in polycrystalline cadmium has been carried out. This investigation was initiated to determine the mechanisms of deformation and fracture in polycrystalline cadmium, and to attempt to correlate these mechanisms with the behavior of other metals of hexagonal close-packed structure. A second objective of this work was to determine whether the slip systems and mode of fracture of polycrystalline cadmium could be altered by reduction of the axial ratio, which is 1.886, through alloying. Dorn and co-workers' have been able to induce prismatic slip in magnesium through alloying to reduce the axial ratio. Single crystals of cadmium are so highly ductile that glide strains of 400 pct are observed at room temperature, and 80 pct at -269°c.l Failure in every reported case is by necking down and shearing off of the crystal. Cleavage in cadmium single crystals has never been observed. Magnusson and aldwin reported a ductile to brittle transition for polycrystalline cadmium at about —160 C for specimens tested at a strain rate of 0.05 in. per in. per min in tension. However, even at -196° substantial ductility was retained. The transition temperature was strain rate dependent, impact loading at 19,000 in. per in. per min raising the transition temperature to about -85°C while leaving the low temperature ductility unchanged. No information was given on microstructures or fracture mode, nor were stress-strain characteristics reported. In the present investigation, tensile tests were carried out on polycrystalline cadmium and solid solution Cd-Mg alloys to determine flow stresses, work-hardening behavior, fracture strength, and fracture ductility. Variables employed included temperature, alloy content (and c/a ratio), and grain size.Some compression data also have been obtained for comparison purposes. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES A) Polycrystalline Cadmium. Two purities of cadmium were employed in this investigation. Cadmium of 99.95 pct purity was supplied by Belmont Smelting and Refining Co. Cadmium of 99.99+ pct purity was supplied by American Smelting and Refining Co. Threaded cylindrical tensile specimens were machined to give approximately a 1/2 in. long straight gage section with a reduced diameter of about 0.110 in. Specimens were heat treated in evacuated pyrex capsules in the range 140" to 290°C to produce desired grain sizes. All specimens were polished in a solution containing 320 g Cr03 and 20 g NaS04 in 1000 cc of H20. Occasionally this solution caused staining of the specimen, in which case a further polish with a solution of one part HN03 and two parts H202 in two parts ethyl alcohol was employed.' Tensile testing was carried out on a screw-driven Instron machine, at a constant rate of crosshead movement, which for most tests was 0.01 in. per in. per min. Load vs time, and therefore load vs total strain, were recorded. Temperatures from -196" to -40°C were obtained by passing nitrogen gas through a copper coil immersed in liquid nitrogen, and then feeding the gas into a jacket around the specimen. Tests at -269°C were carried out in a helium cryostat, at a crosshead rate of 0.1 in. per in. per min, with specimens of 1 in. gage length. Compression specimens were tested in a jig similar to one designed by ilman. The jig was mounted on the under side of the Instron crosshead. Load was transmitted by means of a rod connected to a movable part of the jig at one end, and the load cell at the other end. A downward movement of the crosshead applied a compressive load to the specimen.

The surface mining operations of the Simplot Fertilizer Co. are on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation approximately 16 miles east of Fort Hall, Idaho (Fig 1). The Phosphoria formation outcrops in sec. 2, 3, 11, 14, 15, 22 and 27, T 4 S, R 37 E, Boise Meridian. The ownership of these phosphate-bearing lands is divided between individual Indians and the Bannock-Shoshone Tribe, and the royalties are paid to the respective owners on a tonnage basis, as the rock is mined. The geology and mineral resources of the Fort Hall Reservation were studied by the U. S. Geological Survey in 1913 and reported on in 1920. † However, it was not until the winter of 1945 that exploratory work was undertaken by private enterprise. MicrOscopic metallography has been exploited quite well enough to bring about a very general understanding that the typical metal or alloy is composed of minute crystalline particles blended into a coherent rnicrostructural rnosaic. One does not have to be a specialist in metallography to realize that the properties of such an aggregate are essentially a summation in appropriate form of individual effects derived from the shape, size, placement or orientation and cohesive characteristics of the component particles. It is clearly of great importance to consider the various forms of discontinuity which may occur at the boundaries between these crystalline particles. When a number of particles each possessing the same orderly arrangement of atoms are brought together into a close-fitting system of purely haphazard contacts, not unlike a handful of snowflakes compacted into a snowball, the particles are said to possess random orientation. There are no generally accepted views concerning the arrangement of the atoms or the constitutional reaction between atoms where one crystal meets another, but these contact regions are characterized by strength rather than weakness and it is customary to require the presence of many rather than few boundaries in preparing metal for useful service. Under certain circumstances all of the particles in a metal may be nearly alike in orientation. Other general tendencies of orientation may be associated with particular forms of mechanical and thermal treatment. In contrast with these cases of fortuitous or statistical diversity of orientation, we often find adjacent particles united along a plane which possesses a grouping of atoms belonging equally well to both structures. This, of course, determines a fixed relationship between the two orientatjions and it is always possible to derive one from the other by some form of- rotation or reflection prescribed by the symmetry of the crystal structure under consideration. Particles united in this manner are known as twin crystals although the term refers to the form of association rather than the number of individuals concerned.

The key to successful liquid-liquid extraction is the solvent. First, and most important, it must be highly selective for the metal desired and yet reject other metal ions present; second, the ideal sol- vent is completely insoluble in the aqueous feed liquor; third, it has rapid phase separation and will not form emulsions; and, fourth, low cost is desirable, since losses occur even though the solvent is recycled. For this application a solvent known as DDPA (dodecyl phosphoric acid) was chosen since it closely met these requirements. DDPA is a long-chain alkyl phosphate developed for AEC by Oak Ridge National Laboratories, Dow Chemical Co., and the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The long chain contributes to low solubility in the aqueous phase and to high extracting power from acidic sulfate solutions, whereas the alkyl phosphates generally exhibit high selectivity for uranium solutions.

Fred D. DeVaney (Magnetic Roasting of Iron Ores, P. 1219) has presented several other AIME papers, all of them concerned with grinding and concentrating problems. He is chief metallurgist, Pickands Mather & Co., at Hibbing Minn., after working for the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Rolla, Mo., as a junior metallurgist and a metallurgist. DeVaney started as a research metallurgist with Pickands Mather in 1942. He set up the first laboratory in the Lake Superior district devoted to taconite concentra¬ [ ] tion, his major interest. He has been an AIME member since 1923, holding various offices, including the first presidency of the Minnesota Section. DeVaney has a Bachelor's in Mining, and Master of Science earned at the University of Alabama in 1924. He is a member of the Engineers Club of Northern Minnesota and plays golf for relaxation and enjoyment.

THE kaolins of the southeastern United States were known to civilization as early as the latter part of the eighteenth century-and yet the [ ] commercial history of Georgia kaolins may be said to begin in the year 1900. The U. S. Bureau of Mines reported for that year a production of 6885 tons of "miscellaneous" clays in Georgia. A comparison of these figures with those of 1934, when the production rose to 284,556 tons (65 per cent of the domestic production), indicates the growing economic and technologic importance of this raw material. Fig. 1 clearly shows that a part of the increase is due to a normal growth in the use of kaolinitic clays and a part is due to replacement of clays formerly imported. The Paranam plant in Surinam (formerly Dutch Guiana) was built during 1939-40 to supply crushed and dried bauxite for the growing U.S. aluminum industry, supplementing production from the Suriname Aluminum Co.'s Moengo works, which began operation in 1922. A subsidiary of Aluminum Company of America, Suralco's total annual production from these two plants averages 2.55 million dry metric tons of various grades of bauxite. Starting in 1941 with bauxite from mines on the west side of the Suriname River, annual production at the Paranam plant has varied from a low of approximately 450,000 tons to more than 1 million tons in 1949. High production rates during World War II and the late 1940's rapidly depleted these reserves, and in 1950 plans were made to mine the known deposits on the east bank of the river, about five miles downstream from the original Paranam plant.

This paper describes displacement mechanisms of micel-lur solution slugs, displuced by a thickened water "mobility buffer", in a glass micromodel and in consolidated Berea sandstone cores. Colored motion pictures, taken through a microscope, recorded interactions on a pore-to-pore bash in the micromodel. Production and differential pressure data from consolidated cores previously waterflooded to residua1 oil saturation revealed displacement mechani.sm.s macroscopically. Oil is displaced miscibly, while interstitia1 water is displaced immiscibly by the injected micellar. solution slug. Part of this water is dispersed and carried near the lead ing edge of the .slug, and some may remain as a residual saturation. Thickened water displaces any residual water. It also emulsifies with the. slug material, thereby displacing it. The displacement sequence forms banks of oil and water with relatively constant fractional flows, saturations, and mobilities. The mobility of oil and water flowing ahead of the .slug defines .slug viscosity required for stable displacement. Equations are presented that describe. several aspecis of the displacement flow behavior: oil breakthrough, oil cut during production of the stabilized bank, breakthrough of banked water and the resulting decreased fractional flow of oil, fluid mobilities, etc. Breakthroughs, calculated from the equations, are compared with experimental data. Slugs of micellar sollution, ranging from 1 to 5 percent PV, produced unusually high oil recoveries (up to 100 percent) in previously waterflooded consolidated cores. Investigation of the effect of mobility buffer size on oil recovery indicated that recovery is reduced in 3-in. X 4-ft cores for mobility buffer sizes .smaller than 50 percent of the pore volume. Introduction A new oil recovery process,* conceived in 1962, utilizes a slug of micellar solution' that has sufficient viscosity to avoid an unfavorable mobility ratio with respect to the oil and water it displaces. These micellar solutions are composed of hydrocarbons, water, and surfactants, and may contain electrolytes and co-surfactants. The micellar solution is displaced by a "mobility buffer". The mobility buffer is a bank of reduced-mobility fluid, preferably an aqueous polymer solution. The entire system is displaced by unthickened water. This paper describes some of the microscopic and macroscopic displacement mechanisms observed during laboratory development of the fluids for a potential field test. Microscopic phenomena were observed photographically in a specially constructed glass flow model and macroscopic data were taken from constant rate, tertiary displacements conducted in Berea sandstone cores. Qualitative Description of Micellar Solution Flooding This section qualitatively describes displacement mechanisms that occur when a slug of micellar solution is injected into a previously waterflooded core. The slug completely removes oil from the portion of core it contacts, and banks oil in the process. The oil saturation in this bank and the flowing WOR reach definite, fixed values that are determined by water and oil mobilities and slug characteristics. This zone of constant WOR and oil saturation will be called "stabilized oil bank" in the following discussion. When this stabilized bank reaches the outlet end of the core, the oil cut jumps from zero to a constant value equal to the fractional flow of oil. Saline water has little or no solubility in the slug. Because of this. the slug displaces in-place brine immiscibly. During slug injection, most of the brine is displaced ahead of the slug, some is carried along in the leading portion of the slug, and part of the brine may become immobile. The immobile, residual brine is later miscibly displaced by thickened water. Displacement of all the oil and only part of the water during slug injection results in a higher fractional flow of oil ahead of the slug than occurs when all the water is displaced after injection of thickened water is begun. The slug spontaneously emulsifies fresh (low-salt content) water. By emulsification, the slug can become infinitely diluted, and hence totally displaced, by thickened water. Selective flocculation studies carried out with iron ore tailings generated at Kudremukh iron ore plant indicate that a concentrate containing 63% iron can be obtained from the tailings containing 34% iron with around 60% recovery. This opens up the possibility of recovering most of the iron lost in the tailings generated at 2 kt/h (2200 stph) while processing 22 Mt (24 million st) ore per year. This would mean that the productivity could increase by around 50%. In these studies, it has been established that caustic degraded tapioca starch is a most effective agent for selective flocculation. While potato starch after caustic degradation can also be used, neither the parent starch nor the amylopectin compound is as effective.

A mixed-integer formulation of the mine scheduling problem is discussed and applied for the purpose of optimizing both the mine production sequencing and the mill blending and processing problem simultaneously. Previous attempts at solving these problem separately, although successful, fail to take into account the interrelationships between these problems. Project structure selves as the outline of this paper Generalized in its organization, this concept is useful for long, intermediate, and short range scheduling. Actual applications that show the concept also is applicable to mining a variety of ore are mentioned.

THE separation of minerals by flotation can be regarded as a rate process, with the extraction of any one mineral determined by its flotation rate, and the grade of concentrate by the relative rates for all the minerals. So regarded, the significant variables for the process are those that control the rates. These variables are of two types, the first describing the ore and its physical and chemical treatment prior to flotation and the second characterizing the separation process in the cells. This paper will examine the variation in rates for a group of separations, will show that a simple rate law appears to govern, and will consider the relation of the control variables to the rates. The use of rate constants for evaluation of performance and efficiency will be discussed.

Desulfurization of limestone during and subsequent to calcination has been investigated using U.S. Steel's Rogers City quarry-Michigan limestone cut to 25-30-mm diam spheroidal shapes. The experimental observations indicated that the sulfur present as iron pyrite in commercial limestone is oxidized partly to SO, during calcination and partly converted to sulfides (FeS, CaS) and CaSO4. If calcination is carried out under oxidizing conditions, most of the sulfur is converted to CaSO4, which can be removed from burnt lime readily in CO,-CO mixtures, the higher the CO content the faster is the rate of reaction. In the 30-mm-diam spheroids gas diffusion in the pores of limestone and burnt lime is fast relative to rates of the desulfurizing reactions. Over the temperature range investigated, e.g., 850° to 1200°C, there is internal desulfurization.
