Investigations were conducted by the lndiana Geological Survey for some dry methods of bene-ficiating low-grade gypsum ore. Seventy-two batch and continuous flow tests were performed with a roller mill, rod mill, pebble mill, electronic color sorter, electrostatic separator, and an air separator. Approximately 650 size analyses and 550 chemical analyses were performed during the investigation. Batch samples were tested by the Survey, and most of the continuous flow tests were handled by com-mercial laboratories. INTRODUCTION Although many companies producing gypsum have been interested in dry beneficiation, very little information has been published in the past. One of the most comprehensive investigations was reported by the Canadian Department of Mines.5 Other reports of interest have been published by the Canadian Department of Mines,' the South Australian Department of Mines,2 and the U.S. Bureau of Mines.3 Some beneficiating practices, such as hand picking, selective mining, crushing and screening, milling, and air classifying, were already in use in the Canadian industry prior to MacPherson's investigations.5 MacPherson examined the effect of tabling, air separation, screening, flotation, electrostatic separation, calcining, washing, and various types of milling, in his efforts to eliminate dolomite, limestone, and small amounts of silica and clay from the gypsum ore. RAW MATERIAL Gypsum and anhydrite occur within the lower part of the St. Louis Limestone (Mississippian) in southwestern Indiana. Gypsum in single beds 10 or more ft thick occur at Shoals, Martin County; near Freedom, Owen County; near Bloomfield, Greene County; and in the Devonian strata of LaPorte County. Only the Shoals deposit has been exploited commercially. The western edge of the Shoals deposit is contaminated by a continuous bed of shale, about 1 1/2 to 2 ft thick, near the top of the evaporite and by thin continuous strata or irregular masses of carbonate rock. The low-grade material used in these investigations was obtained from the waste pile of the National Gypsum Co.'s plant at Shoals. The waste ore averaged about 67.4% gypsum and was contaminated by various amounts of shale, dolomite, and limestone. All the material had been previously crushed and screened to minus 1 1/4 to plus 3/8 in. X-ray analyses of powdered, sedimentated, gly-colated, and heat-treated samples of the shale showed that it was composed of slightly structurally disordered illite, Fe-rich chlorite, and very finegrained disseminated silt. The clays and silt were partly cemented with carbonate material. Light-gray argillaceous limestone and gray or brown porous dolomite made up most of the carbonate rock contamination. Crushing Characteristics: The rate unweathered gypsum, carbonate rock, and shale reduce in size was determined by crushing handpicked samples in a rod mill and screening at minus 100 mesh (.0059 in.). Fig. 1 graphically represents the data. These data indicate that carbonate rock should be relatively easy to separate from gypsum, but that shale should be difficult to separate from gypsum by differential crushing. Controlled Samples: Eight rod mill tests of hand-picked samples of mixed gypsum and shale and mixed gypsum and carbonate rock were made. Sample weight and crushing weight were standardized, but the scalping screen size was varied from 3 to 10 mesh (.265 to .0787 in.) in order to obtain the optimum purity and recovery. The data obtained from the tests (see Table I) illustrate that the relatively hard carbonate rock allows appreciable beneficiation (13.6 to 18%), but the low strength gypsum and shale allows only minimal separation (3.1 to 7.5%).* Semi control led Samples: During the investigation considerable slaking of the shale was noted when the ore was subjected to alternate wetting and drying. As demonstrated in laboratory tests, as much as 76% shale can be removed by two cycles of wetting and drying in a 48-hour period with subsequent screening at .265 in. Five ore samples, stockpiled and weathered, were screened, rod-mill crushed and rescreened at .157 or .187 in. with excellent results (Table 11).

What would appear to be a very simple process on paper has proved to be overrun with a multitude of unseen difficulties. For more than 70 years attempts have been made to cast metals in a continuous manner, but it has been only within the last Io years that some degree of success has been achieved.1 Historical Development Bessemer's Experiments—Method I Bessemer was the first to try to cast molten metal in a continuous manner. His method is fully described in U. S. Patent No. 49053, issued in 1865. The patent drawing is shown in Fig. I. In this method the molten metal was poured between a pair of rolls of large diameter, which were cooled by water sprays. Means were provided to prevent moisture from coming into direct coptact with the molten metal. The width of the strip was controlled by the flanges. On paper this should work to perfection, but it is beset with many difficulties still awaiting solution. Bessemer failed to reduce his invention to commercial practice. About 1890 Bessemer's method was revived by Norton and associates (U. S. Patent No. 441375). They formed the Fluid Metal Rolling Co. at Maywood, Ill., and spent $250,000 in endeavoring to develop the technique for this simple method. Finally they had to abandon it. Naturally, they did carry the technical development far beyond anything Bessemer had done, but even so it was far from being a useful commercial success. In recent years it has undergone further development by C. W. Hazelett (U. S. Patent No. 2058447), who has succeeded in obtaining long lengths of copper, brass, aluminum, and even stainless steel. He introduced many' ingenious devices but the greatest obstacle still remained—the disintegration of the roll surface when the surface is heated and chilled in rapid succession. Difficulty is also experienced in maintaining a uniform supply of molten metal to the rolls. The patents pertaining to this method would indicate these to be the major obstacles. Experimental work by Mellen—Method 2 A departure from the method introduced by Bessemer, was tried by Grenville Mellen, of East Orange, K. J., sometime between 1914 and 1920, who obtained a number of patents.2 His method is illustrated in Fig. 2. This method failed to make an impression upon the art; however, it is of value in pointing out the difficulties the inventor ran into and the way in which he tried to meet them. The split mold sections form two endless chains. When going through the center of the apparatus, these sections engage each other to form a complete mold. As the engaged mold section moves downward at a constant speed, molten metal is teemed into it. As this is going on, another set of cooperating mold sections move into position on top of the one being filled. The molten metal is teemed into the mold through a silica tube. ATTEMPTING to review the fundamental aspects of segregation in steel ingots of all types in a paper of reasonable length, we encounter two difficulties: (I) the fact that a large number of different physical and chemical effects are involved, and (2) rather incomplete and confusing evidence on certain aspects of detail and mechanism in the freezing process in which the segregation effect is involved. The best solution seemed to be to link together most of the underlying factors into a simplified theoretical picture that appears to the writer to explain most of the observed data, in the hope that this will serve as a reasonably good target for discussion and criticism. Segregation effects, especially in steel ingots or castings, are often divided into " microscopic " and " macroscopic," depending on whether the variations in concentration of solutes? or dissolved elements in the iron occur as: (I) a periodic variation over the small distances between the nuclei and the surfaces of the primary grains, or (2) as a larger scale effect involving concentration gradients over distances of the order of several inches, more or less. The reason for this somewhat artificial division is, of course, that it is only the macroscopic scale effect that has much practical importance. About the only effect of practical importance that results from microscopic segregation is the banded structure often left in rolled sections, and even this is relatively harmless in most cases. However, the causes of microscopic segregation also underly the larger scale effect, so we must first consider matters such as the formation and growth of crystal nuclei, selective freezing and diffusion, and others that are fundamental to all segregation effects. UNDERCOOLING AND NUCLEI FORMATION It is probable that although the degree of undercooling is small in iron, as in metals in general, a certain amount of it takes place, and also that the number of crystal nuclei increases very rapidly with increased undercooling below the liquidus tempera¬ture. In practical terms this means that the nuclei number increases very rapidly with increased cooling or freezing rate, thus being dependent on the rate of heat flow out from the zone of crystallization. TEMPERATURE GRADIENTS AND HEAT DISSIPATION DURING FREEZING Each pound of steel evolves about 100 B.t.u. when freezing. In addition to this, the temperature gradient in the solidified portion (required to dissipate the heat as freezing progresses into the axis) necessitates a loss of heat required to cool the solid metal below its freezing range, which is equivalent to an amount of not so much less in magnitude. In a 5-ton ingot, the total would include about one million B.t.u. for freezing alone and about 0.4 to 0.5 million B.t.u. for the gradient, up to the end of the freezing period: Thus the rate of freezing depends primarily on the rate of heat dissipation. T0 determine the bulk of the phase diagram, techniques for melting, thermal analysis, heat treatment, metallography, and X-ray diffraction that have already been described were used.' It proved difficult to get definitive results for most of the alloy system because of the large number of compounds, their high melting points, and their extreme brittle-ness which made metallography difficult. The final phase diagram, essentially as shown in Fig. 1, was issued with considerable trepidation.' The phase relationships at the two ends of the system were defined with satisfactory accuracy. In the central region between U,Si, and USi, there was great uncertainty concerning the melting points and even the composition of the compounds. At the uranium end of the system, it is quite clear that a eutectic exists at about 985 °C and approximately 8 or 9 atomic pct Si. The a-to-8 transformation is not appreciably altered by silicon, but the 8-to-y transformation is raised to about 795°C. There is appreciable solid solubility in y-uranium, as demonstrated by the micrographs of Fig. 2. The occurrence of the E phase was not suspected at first, since the alloys as melted and furnace cooled gave no X-ray diffraction or thermal arrest indication of it. However, suitable metallography revealed a rim around each of the compound particles as shown in Fig. 3. Heat treatment above 600°C revealed that the rim was another phase which formed by peritectoid reaction between uranium and U,Si,. This reaction proceeds slowly and it is difficult to get it to go to completion. Consequently, there is some uncertainty concerning the exact composition of P and the exact peritectoid temperature. On the basis of various metallurgical studies, it was decided that the most probable composition for t was about 23 atomic pct Si. Metallographic examination shows the closest approach to a single phase at this composition. Likewise, density and hardness measurements of heat-treated alloys shown in Figs. 9 and 10 show a change in slope at 23 pct Si. This is revealed most clearly by plotting the difference in hardness or density between chill-cast and heat- treated alloys as shown in Fig. 4. Zachariasen2 was able to index the diffraction lines of P and to determine the arrangement of the atoms in the unit cell. He concluded that the composition must be US. However, it is felt that the metallurgical studies are reliable and that Zachariasen's X-ray work does not furnish positive proof that the P phase exists exactly at the stoichiometric composition U3Si. There are many instances in alloy systems where a phase does not occur at the composition dictated by the molecular structure. It is possible that the chemical analyses used in the present work were subject to some systematic error. This seems unlikely, however, since recent work in several laboratories seems to show excess compound at 25 atomic pct Si.

THIRTY years ago, when I stood on the cliff of red fossil iron-ore, on Red mountain, Jefferson county, Ala., I asked what were the geological relations of this remarkable deposit. In reply I was told that it was a limestone colored and saturated by some unknown but wholly external influences, and that at a reasonable distance from the surface the color would disappear. I could find no satisfactory explanation either of the nature of this wonderful external permeating influence, or of the cause of such a ferrous impregnation selecting this one particular bed of limestone, to the exclusion of the higher and lower beds of the same material which are not even stained. I. THE PRESENT THEORY. Referring to this subject, Dana says:' "The clays, clayey sandstones and limestones of the Clinton epoch, through New York and the Appalachians, show that the mud-flats and sand-banks, and hence the shallow seas of the coast region, still continued. . . The beds of argillaceous iron-ore, which spread so widely through New York and some of the other States, south and west, could not have formed in an open sea, for clayey iron-deposits do not form under such circumstances. They are proof of extensive marshes, and, therefore, of land near the sea-level. The fragments of crinoids and shells found in these beds are evidence that they were, in part at least, salt-water marshes, and that the tides sometimes reached them." At first, this explanation seemed satisfactory, but the more I studied the ore the less satisfying the explanation became. 1. This treatise is the sequel of a paper on "Russell's Improved Process for the Lixiviation of Silver-ores," etc., read at the Chicago meeting, in May, 1884, and published in the Transactions, vol. xiii., page 47. The facts it presents are principally compiled from Mr. Russell's notes on his practical experience gained in various places where the Russell process has been introduced. For a complete understanding of this paper a perusal of my former one is desirable, as can be seen from the frequent references here made to it. All silver-ores that do not carry a large percentage of lead or copper can be treated by Russell's process with success and economy. I do not mean to create the impression that from ores containing considerable quantities of lead and copper a high percentage of the silver cannot be extracted by this process. Such ores, however, will, in many localities, be reduced to better advantage by smelting. In case lead-bearing silver-ores are suitable for concentration, it may be profitable to concentrate the ore by Krom's dry system, obtaining a smelting-product high in lead, and to lixiviate the tailings and the dust. This plan has been adopted in a mill recently erected in Cortez District, Nevada. The dry system of concentration deserves the preference because it delivers the tailings and the dust in a condition ready for chloridizing-roasting. In wet concentration the drying of the tail ings would be expensive, and there would be a considerable loss of silver in slimes. Oxidized ores, containing silver chloride and lead minerals, may be lixiviated after crushing, and the tailings may be concentrated for lead. In this case wet concentration would be most suitable. This has been done at the Old Telegraph Mine, Utah. I would give, however, the preference to dry concentration in all cases which, of course, requires that concentration should precede lixiviation. Experimental evidence was obtained in support of the idea that cleavage fracture can be initiated by dislocation pile-up. The high ductility of MgO crystals when tested in bending comPared to their relative brittleness in tension was explained on the basis that large pile-ups are more likely in a tension specimen. CLEAVAGE fractures have been a problem of major concern for many years. A number of large steel structures have failed in a brittle manner, usually suddenly and without warning; often the failures occurred for no obvious reason and at nominal stress levels well within the generally accepted range. A great deal of data have been collected about factors that contribute to failures,1 but the physics of the fracture process has never been revealed. cottrel12 has recently developed a theory of brittle fracture in ductile materials which was based upon the concept that dislocations moving on two intersecting planes can unite to form a crack nucleus. This theory accounts for the known effect of grain size and for the effect of testing temperature. There has, as yet, been no experimental evidence published that would substantiate this or the earlier theories based on stress concentrations due to piled-up dislocations. Chrysotile asbestos producers in Quebec may soon experience a unique situation-i.e., strong competition from American ore sources for the short fiber market west of the Mississippi River. This com- petition will be forthcoming from Copperopolis and Coalinga, two deposits now being developed on opposite flanks of the San Joaquin Valley in central California. The combined output now planned from both deposits is 100,000 tons annually, equivalent to about 50% of the annual market demand in the western, central and Gulf States, and more than twice the tonnage sold in 1960 by all other American asbestos producers combined. The principal companies involved in these new undertakings are Jefferson Lake Asbestos Corp. (subsidiary of Jefferson Lake Sulphur Co.), Hidden Splendor Mining Co., Coalinga Asbestos Co. (Johns- Manville Corp. in conjunction with Kern County Land Co.), Union Carbide Corp., and Asbestos Corp. Ltd. Jefferson Lake's principal interest is at Copperopolis where the company's new 70,000-ton per yr mill recently went on stream. The company also holds some claims at Coalinga, but this latter area is better known as the site where Hidden Splendor, Coalinga Asbestos Co. and Todd Industries (a local company) have established operating mines and mills capable of turning out 30,000 tons of fiber each year. Coalinga is also the site of exploration by Union Carbide Nuclear and Asbestos Corp. Ltd.

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) THE practice of carbonizing steel for the purpose of case-hardening has assumed great commercial importance within the past, 10 years. Formerly, case-hardened steel was held in more or less contempt, since it. was considered a cheap substitute for tool-steel. This is no longer the case. The development of the motor-car industry, and coincidentally that of modern alloy-steels, has resulted in overcoming many difficulties formerly experienced in case-hardening. This result has been accomplished by increased knowledge regarding the analysis of the steel which would respond most readily to case-hardening, and by more careful methods of treatment of the carbonized steel. The ordinary method of carbonizing consists in packing the steel with the carbonizing-material in cast-iron boxes and placing them in a furnace at a temperature of from 1,500° to 1,900° F. for a time sufficient to give the required depth of cc case." The steel is then either quenched directly from the box, or is allowed to cool without unpacking, and finally given a single hardening-heat., or, for special work, two or three heats. During the year 1911, more than 100,000 tons of carbonizing-material was sold in the United States, at an average price of probably $55 per ton. More than 85 per cent. of this material consisted of granulated bone. Within the past four years, many manufactured compounds have been placed on the market, consisting largely of some form of carbon or carbonaceous material, with or without the addition of chemicals. Steel will absorb carbon placed in contact with it at the temperature of the atmosphere. The reaction is exceedingly slow, but. increases rapidly with increasing temperature. WHEN some materials are ground dry in a ball mill, a stage of comminution is reached at which the finely divided particles begin to adhere to the balls and to the mill lining. As grinding progresses, a coating accumulates upon the grinding media, which tends to cushion the impacts and thus retard reduction of the material, and finally becomes so thick that all grinding ceases. At this stage, the characteristic noise produced by the grinding media dur-ing normal mill operation changes to a dull, muffled sound. In most instances, the formation of the coating marks the practical limit of size reduction. Industrial requirements for fine grinding frequently meet with this obstacle, and the tendency in many com-mercial operations to grind materials to a higher degree of fineness than formerly makes the solution of this problem an im-portant one. The phenomenon is of far greater importance, therefore, than the limited amount of research and technical discussion devoted to it implies. In order to learn more about the coating of different materials when ground dry to a high degree of fineness, certain labora-tory tests were made from which it was found that different materials form coat-ings at widely different size distributions. It is probable that most materials will coat if they are ground fine enough; the exceptions have inherent lubricating qual-ities, like coal and graphite.

THIS paper gives a short account of plastic deformation as observed in single crystals of zinc, zinc having been selected for the experiments described herein because the phenomena are comparatively so simple and can be studied throughout such a wide range. It is hoped that the paper will serve to show the type of information which studies of single crystals afford and will contribute toward the solution of the general problem of metallic behavior. PRODUCTION OF ZINC SINGLE CRYSTALS The method of Czochralski,1 as modified by von Gomperz,2 was used to produce the crystals studied. The equipment is shown in Fig. 1. Molten zinc is held in a crucible at a temperature which is not far above its melting point, as measured by a pyrometer. A lava disk floats on ,the melt, and is provided with a central hole about 1 mm. in diameter. A glass tube, drawn into a capillary at the lower end, is suspended from a string which is wound up by an electric drive at the speed desired. At the start, the glass capillary is let down into the melt and the hoist is started.. The capillary brings up a small quantity of molten metal with it to a point just above the lava disk. At this point, a jet of hydrogen cools it and causes it to crystallize, with the result that a small crystal forms. As the hoisting is continued, more molten metal is drawn up, in turn to be solidified by the jet of hydrogen. This additional metal continues the growth of the crystal already formed, and a long, cylindrical crystal results. The speed of hoisting used was generally between 0.1 and 0.5 mm. per sec., and the crystals were from 4 to 6 in. long and about 1 mm. in diameter. By varying the conditions, crystals of quite different orientations were obtained and were used in the study of the phenomena to be described.

SOTOPIC tracers have become an important aid in following the progress of chemical processes in the laboratory. It has recently been found possible to utilize a system of naturally existing iso-topic tracers to obtain information about the geological history of lead ores. Common lead, such as is found in lead deposits, is a mixture of four stable isotopes having atomic weights 204, 206, 207, and 208. Of these, the last three are identical with the lead isotopes produced as stable end products of the radioactive decays of uranium and thorium: the first, lead-204, is not known to be produced on the surface of the earth by any process. Since uranium and thorium Occur in the surface regions of the earth in amounts comparable with lead, and since the half-lives of uranium and thorium isotopes are of the same order as the age of the earth, they produce the radiogenic lead isotopes in amounts comparable to the amount of nonradiogenic lead present. Every significant exposure of a sample of lead to uranium and thorium will therefore lead to the permanent alteration of the lead isotope ratios in that sample. It is this unique property of lead that serves as a means of tracing the history of a lead sample in terms of its contacts with the radioactive elements. If lead from a lead mineral has been analyzed with a mass spectrometer, the measured isotope ratios are determined entirely by the isotope ratios of primeval lead, which are identical for all minerals, and by the particular history of the sample. It follows that for samples from any particular geological area, observed differences in the isotopic composition are enough to distinguish different geological histories. An illustration of the qualitative application of this statement is given in Table I by analyses of some galenas from the western Cordillera. Samples from deposits in Pre-Cambrian sediments have very different lead isotope ratios from those of the ores in the Paleozoic sediments. Although the two types are associated closely geographically, it is apparent that they have had quite different histories and have probably been emplaced at quite different times, as the ideas outlined in the following section suggest. Even when applied quantitatively, a lead isotope analysis can never indicate a unique history of any lead sample. However, it greatly restricts the choices available and combined with other geological and geochemical data can lead to a much better understanding of the genesis of lead ores. General Character of Lead Isotope Variations: Early isotopic analyses of common leads by Nierl showed that geologically younger leads were generally richer in isotopes of masses 206, 207, and 208, with respect to that of mass 204. This regularity of measured lead isotope ratios can be easily observed by plotting each of the ratios Pb207/Pbm and Pb205/ Pb204 against the ratio Pb206/Pb204. In both graphs the points lie scattered closely about a well defined mean curve. It was immediately supposed that this regularity resulted from the growth of all leads from a common primeval lead present at some time, To, early in the earth's history. Lead in the outer part of the earth would become continually enriched in the radiogenic isotopes as a result of the uranium and thorium intimately associated with it. The subsequent extraction of some of this lead and formation of a lead mineral free of the radioactive parents provide samples of lead existing in the earth at the time of mineralization, T. Younger leads in general will be richer in the radiogenic isotopes because they have been associated with uranium and thorium for a longer time. The kinetics of isothermal transformation of ß-to-u uranium have been studied over a broad temperature range in alloys containing from 0.3 to 4.0 atomic pct Cr. Two modes of transformation are indicated by the existence of two C-curves in the TTT diagram. The upper temperature mode is regarded as a nucleation and growth mechanism, whose rate is controlled by diffusion of chromium in the ß phase matrix. The lower temperature mode is martensitic in nature. The M, temperature increases with decreasing chromium content, suggesting that the two transformation processes become synonymous in unalloyed uranium. URANIUM metal undergoes two allotropic transformations in the solid state. The a phase, orthorhombic in crystal structure,' is stable from room temperature up to about 665°C. The ß phase, characterized by a complex tetragonal structure,' prevails from 665" to about 770°C. The y phase is body-centered-cubic3 and is the stable modification from 770°C up to the melting point (about 1130"). In uranium of reasonable purity, neither of the two high temperature phases can be retained by quenching. However, the addition of certain alloying elements to uranium makes it possible to retain either the y-uranium phase or the ß-uranium phase at room temperature. Chromium alloyed in small amounts with uranium will permit retention of the ß-uranium phase in a metastable state at room temperature upon quenching from a ß-phase temperature.' From available information' on the equilibrium phase diagram for the U-Cr alloy system (Fig. I), it is to be expected that, however sluggish in its rate, the ß phase in such alloys should decompose eutectoidally to a phase and elemental chromium. It was the aim of this investigation to measure the rate and study the nature of this decomposition as a function of temperature and of chromium content. The investigation was reported in classified literature about five years ago and has recently been declassified for publication. In the meantime, there have appeared the papers of Holden,5 Mott and Haines,".' and Butcher and Rowe8 ealing with the metallography and the crystallography of the ß-to-a transformation in U-Cr alloys. These investigators have confirmed several of the phenomenological observations that will be described in the present paper and have examined in considerable detail certain aspects of the transformation and its mechanism. Although all of these investigations have concerned themselves experimentally with U-Cr alloys for the most part, an important consequence has been a clearer understanding of the nature of the ß-to-a transformation in uranium metal itself. Experimental Procedure This investigation dealt with a series of uranium alloys varying in chromium content from 0.3 to 4.0 atomic pct (0.066 to 0.90 weight pct). On five of the alloys, rates of isothermal transformation from the ß to the a phase were measured over a wide temperature range, leading to the development of TTT (time-temperature-transformation) diagrams. Transformation rates were measured over certain narrow temperature ranges on additional alloys. The alloys were prepared by vacuum melting and casting, using zircon or magnesia crucibles and graphite molds. Electrolytic chromium was used as the alloying addition, and the uranium was Mallin-ckrodt biscuit metal that had been vacuum remelted and cropped to remove many of the nonmetallic impurities that had floated to the top of the ingot. The ingots, 3/4 or 1 in. diam, were reduced in size by swaging. Alloys containing less than about 2 atomic pct Cr were swaged at 250° to 275°C, with initial and intermediate anneals at 550°C after every 75 pct reduction in area. Alloys with higher amounts of chromium were swaged at 550" to 600°C, although at the smaller sizes some of them were reduced by the procedure used on the more dilute alloys. Before use as test specimens, the swaged rods were annealed at 700" to 720°C for several hours, followed by slow furnace-cooling. The purpose of the anneal was to achieve the maximum amount of solution of the available chromium into the ß phase, as well as to remove extensive preferred orientation. INTRODUCTION I retired in 1977 and have been enjoying myself ever since doing odd jobs for various people - on occasions, politicians. I commend it to you as post retirement - get involved in situations that nobody else will take on. It produces all sorts of excitement, it is a lot of fun and, courtesy of the media, you provide great raw material for their current Punch and Judy shows. The example of the adventures in the Escondida financing made me think about the history of the minerals industry in the United States. In order to see more clearly what is going to happen in the future, we have to look at the past and what we have learned, and try to extrapolate from that a scenario for the future. This paper is about global material cycles and the financial needs of the extractive industries. Since about 2,000 years B.C. we have been living in the Iron Age. Since about 4,000 B.C. we have been living in the Copper Age. These have been the two foundations of modern industrial society. Understanding the use of metals and materials helps us understand the civilization in which we live today. Let me focus more closely on the United States, particularly in this century. In the first two-thirds of this century the United States was growing and expanding and developing. It was providing for its inhabitants a society which was enjoying the benefits of a rising standard of living, improved opportunities and the ability to support a population growing at quite a dramatic rate. It is still growing. In the Department of Commerce, there is a clock that shows how many people there are in the United States. It turns all the time; the numbers are going up. On January 21,1980, when Ronald Reagan was sworn in as President, the number on that clock was a little over 220 million, and in the last week before he left, it was travelling towards 245 million. During his period in Washington, we have added , the equivalent of one total state such as California. That gives the dimensions of the U.S. appetite for raw material inputs. The inputs are of critical importance. COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGE During the first two-thirds of this century, the minerals sector enjoyed comparative advantages. There was a clear understanding of the importance of minerals enshrined in the tax legislation of the country from the early decades of this century - the depletion allowance. No other country identified as clearly that the supplies of minerals were finite. As they are used up, just as with a wearing-out machine, one must get capital back to replace the resource when the time comes. Within the last decade, that idea has been questioned and criticised. It is now seen as giving money away to a preferred part of the economy, instead of recognizing what depletion is all about. In previous times it insured that the U.S. always was able to regenerate the capital in its minerals industry, so that it could remain competitive. The U.S. had plenty of everything, including energy. We had a growing population. Equally important, we had an agriculture that led the world in productivity, even as far back as the turn of the century. It continues to do so. We still retain that comparative advantage, an ability to produce our foodstuffs in quantity and quality at excellent cost. Look at another ingredient of our comparative advantage, the energy position. We ran through the first two-thirds of the century with ever- decreasing energy costs. In the 1940s and 1950s the coal industry went into a decline. Why? Because the $3.00 - $5.00 a ton cost of mining coal in the U.S. represented relatively expensive energy. A ton of good grade bituminous coal contains 25 million BTU's. $0.20 a million BTU's represents $5.00 a ton at the pithead. The phase is a hard and extremely brittle material with a tetragonal crystal structure, containing 30 atoms per unit cell' It occurs in many binary and ternary alloys of the transition elements. The existence of twelve a phases has been reported in binary alloys of metals from the group vanadium, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten with metals from the group manganese, iron, cobalt, and nickel. It is a characteristic fact that the composition of the o- phases in the various binary systems is not the same. Rather, there is a gradual shift in composition, for instance in the series of chromium a phases, approximately as follows: CrMn,, FeCr, Cr3Co,. In recent years several ideas have been put forward to account for this variability of composition. SullyZ proposed that a was a type of electron compound, characterized by 1.7 electrons per atom in excess of the number required to fill the Pauling atomic orbitals. These excess electrons were supposed to just fill the first Brillouin zone of the u structure. However, later work indicated that the phase is ferromagnetic at low temperatures, so that a- is unlikely to be a full zone compound.~ Another proposal,* which is also based on the structure of the transition elements advanced by Pauling, and in fact leads to essentially the same a compositions as Sully's theory, suggests that the u phase is characterized by a constant number of electron vacancies per atom. The electron vacancy numbers N,. used were originally the same as those in the Pauling theory, but were later modified empirically vn order to bring about better agreement with data for the p phase in certain ternary systems. For alloys, N,, was calculated on the assumption of simple additivity from the electron vacancy numbers of the components, as follows: N,. = 4.66 (Mo + Cr + V) + 3.2 (Mn) + 2.2 (Fe) + 1.71 (Co) + 1.6 (Ni). On this basis a reasonably constant value of N, = 3.4 was obtained for all of the binary u phases and a fairly constant value of N,, = 3.1 for the various p phases. More recently, Bloom and Granta pointed out that a similar correlation with the total number of 3d and 4s electrons per atom is also fairly well fulfilled and concluded that no reference need be made to the Pauling theory. This proposal does not lead to the same binary a compositions as the one described above, so that the relative merits of the two proposals may be determined on the basis of direct comparison with experimental composition data. The purpose of the present paper is to provide such a comparison. Since the experimental data for the composition ranges of several of the known u phases were rather incomplete, it was decided to carry out new experimental determinations for many of the binary systems. Experimental Procedure The alloys were prepared by induction melting in recrystallized alumina crucibles, either in vacuum or in helium atmospheres. Some aluminum was picked up from the crucibles in the alloys of high vanadium content, but this was minimized by keeping the alloys in the molten state for as short a time as possible. The maximum aluminum impurity was 0.13 wt pct by chemical analysis, in an alloy containing over 50 wt pct V. In general, the as-melted compositions agreed accurately with those obtained by chemical analysis. In the case of manganese, however, losses inevitably occurred; consequently all manganese alloys were analyzed. Specimens of all alloys were annealed at temperatures ranging from 1000" to 1300°C in an atmosphere of purified 92 pct helium and 8 pct hydrogen mixture. All manganese alloys were sealed in quartz tubes under vacuum before annealing. The specimens were held at temperature for between four and eight days before being quenched into cold water. Alloys were prepared for microscopic examination by mechanical polishing, usually followed by electrolytic etching. X-ray diffraction specimens were prepared by crushing the homogenized alloys, and by reanneal-ing the obtained powders in evacuated quartz tubes for a few hours at the temperature of the lump anneal. Some of the physical, chemical, and electrical processes for conversion of saline water to potable or industrial water are economically surveyed from an engineering viewpoint. Since all these processes require energy for drive and equipment for containment, the correlative economic factors are developed which indicate directive influences in the choice of particular regional processes. The supply of natural waters and its distance also affect decision. Any one process will probably not prove dominant in the field because auxiliary considerations such as the saline water source; types and continuing availability of fuel; electric power use or recovery; area economic status and advancement; and the political pressures of population, group demands, and land use tend equivocally to obscure capital and operation cost decisions. Basic engineering considerations, data, and economic factors are presented to assist in the direction of these decisions. An exploding world population, increasing industrialization, advancing standards of living, and the desire of less-privileged nations for betterment focus attention sharply on a major problem: water. *19 Up to now, in retrospect, people have had it relatively easy in the handling of this problem. All the better dams in the most advantageous sites, the better aquifers, the shortest aqueducts have been built. In another phase of the problem, concern is evident that wastes cannot indefinitely be disposed of merely by keeping them dilute and discharging them promiscuously. 7-9 And, perhaps, as past civilizations have done,l5 water, watersheds, streams, and irrigation may have been mismanaged or, at the least, not adequately studied.3,5,36,37 In this last is perhaps the core of the problem. As Gross states, "Ignorance and too often, indifference are contributing factors. Archaeology and theology both furnish ample testimony to the existence of rich lands where deserts now stand; it was man who ravaged his land. Unless education is a companion to water development, development might as well be forgotten. But without water, there is no beginning."13 The U.S. is showing increasing concern about its water for predictions are that by 1980 the daily withdrawals will be 494 billion gal, a figure nearly equal to the dependable supply.Is This is based on a conservative projected population of 230 million. The major categories of withdrawals are: To make available this per capita average of 2150 gal per day will require an expenditure of $219 billion over the next 20 years. The U.S. is not alone in this concern. The United Nations shows as arid zones of the world: all of Africa north of the equator and south of the 20's parallel; all of the Arabian peninsula; all of the middle east and Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, northern and central India; a great band about 1000 miles wide along the 40'~ parallel from the Caspian Sea east across Russia through China to the Pacific Ocean; all of Australia except the coastal plain; the Caribbean Islands; the western nations of South America; and the western third of the United States and of Mexico. With one quarter of the earth's 57,500,000 sq miles of land thus suffering from lack of good water, increasing attention goes to the treatment of brackish and sea waters. The U.S. has been a leader in this field4,12, 16123,24 through its Office of Saline Water in the Dept. of Interior because even now some of its cities and regions are short of potable water. 11j'7,M Industrial water is also of vital concern as a result of ever higher industrialization1,14122 Other nations, among them JaPan, Israel,13188 Germany, Union of South Africa, Australia, Netherlands, France, Yugoslavia, Russia, and groups such as the Organization for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC)' are also diligent. The objective is low cost water, which means that both technology and economics have prominent roles in saline water conversion processes.
