Since start-up in 1985 the Cannon Mine has produced and shipped a 170 g Au/tonne (5 oz Au/ton) flotation concentrate to various smelters for gold and silver recovery. Several processed have been investigated to economically produce dore' at the mine site from the refractory concentrate. This paper describes recent laboratory and pilot scale test work utilized in the process design and engineering feasibility study of a 73 tonne/day (80 ton/day) pressure oxidation and CIL facility. The designed pressure oxidation circuit utilizes a series of vertical autoclave units operating at 170°C (338"F) and 1.4 MPa (200 psig). Projected operating costs are discussed.

Federal regulations require that methane liberated at the face be diluted and removed to maintain methane gas concentrations below 1pct (CFR) in working places and intake air courses. The delivery and distribution of intake air at the face is critical for effective face ventilation. Improved techniques for monitoring the movement of intake air to the face are needed. A test system was developed and a computer program written for using a three-axis ultrasonic anemometer to measure airflow in a simulated mine entry. Results of tests conducted in the entry showed that the anemometer is a valuable tool for measuring mine airflow conditions near the face.

Results of selective flocculation of natural ores containing two or more minerals and of synthetic mineral mixtures do not usually agree with what is expected on the basis of the results from single mineral tests (Acar and Somasundaran, 1985). This is mainly due to the ionic species released by the minerals, which act differently under different pH values. The objective of this investigation was to study 1) the surface chemical composition of selected sulfide minerals-natural chalcopyrite and pentlandite and synthetic covellite, millerite, and pyrrhotite-and 2) the changes brought about by the dissolved mineral species. Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA) was used to perform the surface analyses.

The preliminary design of four mined stations and 7.2 km (4.5 miles) of tunnels for Seattle’s light rail transit system is described. Constraints that influenced the design and options that were studied are discussed. The hilly post-glacial soft-ground geology of the Puget Sound Region pushed the alignment deep. Mined underground stations at depths up to 75 m (250 ft) and shafts with excavated diameters of 20-m (65-ft) are required. A 460 m (1,500 ft) sub-aqueous crossing of Portage Bay and undercrossing of an active 12-lane multi-level freeway were two of the more significant design constraints.

Two case studies of methane gas explosions and their effect on the operation of underground coal mines are presented. The studies detail the recovery operations and investigations at each mine site. These include the circumstances prior to the explosions and the effects on the surface and underground ventilation control systems. Various ignition sources such as surface and underground electrical power systems, degasification sites, ventilation shafts, test well casings, and lightning activity were investigated. In each case, a lightning report from the National Lightning Detection Network1 was used in conjunction with the physical evidence and eyewitness accounts to confirm lightning strikes as the ignition source for the explosions.

The Umuna epithermal precious metal deposit has provided the target for a simulated rock geochemistry exploration program, directed at bedrock exposed in the drainage system of eastern Misima Island. A geochemical halo to the deposit is readily recognised in the mafic meta-volcanic country rock. This halo is defined by anomalous results for both major (K, Na, Ca, Mg) and minor (Au, As, Sb, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ba, Rb, Sr, Cs, Bi, Ga, S) element geochemistry, extending further than 1km from the deposit. Such halos are sufficiently extensive to provide adequate exploration targets in the search for epithermal mineralisation, complementing mineralogic and secondary media geochemical investigations.

Experimentation was per formed on the flotation of apatite and dolomite separately using anionic collectors in the presence of Mycobacterium phlei. Also, the flotation of mixtures of dolomite and apatite in the presence of anionic collectors and in the absence and presence of the bacterium were studied. It was found that M.phlei functions as a depressant for both minerals. However, it functions as a better depressant for dolomite than for apatite. Experimentation was extended to two different Florida dolomitic phosphate rocks. In this investigation a concentrate grade of less than 1.0% MgO was achieved with a 75% P2O5 recovery.

Precipitation of a metal from an aqueous solution of its salts by another metal is known as cementation, because the precipitated metal is usually cemented on the added metal. This phenomena was once described by the alchemists as "transmutation," when they dipped a piece of iron in a solution of copper sulfate and the iron was coated with a layer of metallic copper. The process can be predicted in terms of electrode potentials. The metal with the more positive (oxidation) potential, as given in Table 13-1 of the electromotive series, will pass into solution and displace a metal with a less positive potential.

Several controlled recirculation systems are in operation wor1dwide. As an unconventional technique of ventilation the implementation of such a system requires particular safety conditions and a well-founded set of feasibility factors and parameters. On the other hand, many mines in Romania are facing problemms in meeting the growing ventilation demands, so that controlled air recirculation could give an answer. The present paper presents the results of the work in this field, based on a detailed theoretical approach. Parameters wich must to be taken into account were identified and analysed, numerical simulation are carried out and an experimental test-scale model is presented.

There is an ongoing battle to gain general acceptance of fossil fuel byproducts as safe, economical and useful agro-industrial materials. Despite that, the US ash industry is witnessing a steady growth in the volume of coal burned, along with the production of greatly refined, higher-quality ash particulates. There are two principal reasons for this. Economics have caused an increasing number of US electric utilities to convert from oil-burning to coal-burning. And the Federal government has tightened specifications on fly/bottom ash production quality. Hence, it must be noted that new and more stringent Federal regulations were implemented in 1980. The resultant ash particulates are finer, more compact, and less heavy than in previous years. Additionally, the first shift from oil to coal in the US was initiated in December, 1979 by the New England Power Co. in Massachusetts. Coal is the most widely-distributed fuel in the US. And it is found in 38 states. The wide availability of this fossil fuel and its general cost-efficiency, coupled with the undaunted move of US electric utilities toward nuclear power, are major factors affecting the current statistics on ash generation (65.4 x 106 million tons). Interest in the use of coal in power plants is creating a unique ash disposal and use situation for ash producers as well as the Federal government. There are growing quantities of fly/bottom ash residue. Ash producers must decide how this byproduct can be dealt with effectively and profitably. At the same time, government agencies such as the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), are commissioned by Congress to assure that solid, liquid, or gaseous material released into the environment is not harmful or offensive to human health and the environment. Additionally, the Federal government is often responsible for establishing and enforcing guidelines and standards governing the use of recycled materials. Several standards and guidelines governing the properties and use of ash in the US have been established by governmental agencies as well as by the ash industry itself. Of these, some have been developed for ash use by a specific federal agency. Others apply to the entire industry. The following is a brief identification of the major specifications for fossil fuel ash: • US Corps of Engineers - These specifications were first established in 1957. They delineate the physical and chemical requirement for pozzolans used in mass concrete. These specifications applied only to Corps of Engineers' concrete construction projects for locks, dams, and other mass concrete projects until 1977. At that time, a joint effort between the American Society for Testing and Materials and the Federal government produced a modified specification that is now generally applied. The Corps of Engineers' ash, however, retained certain aspects of its specifications for its own use, particularly in the area of handling and shipping fly ash to its own projects. Prior to transporting the fly ash to the corps, all potential sources for the ash must be inspected and approved as a supply source. All silos must be filled, sealed, and tested before the ash is released for shipment. The normal test period for the ash is seven days, although several testings may require up to 28 days. Once the fly ash has been released, it can only be shipped to US Corps of Engineers' projects. All shipments are made with a government inspector present during loading. After a truck or railcar is loaded, the silo is resealed until the next shipment. This procedure requires three silos, and a minimum of 454 t (500 st) each should be considered for each storage unit. All silos are strictly committed to Corps of Engineers' use and are not available for other commercial shipments. • US Bureau of Standards - This Federal agency maintains a standard testing sample of nearly every product used in the US. The accuracy of the fly ash chemical analysis is measured by a regular cement and concrete reference laboratory (CCRL) inspection and based on test results from a standard sample of cement. • US Bureau of Reclamation - This agency pioneered several projects using fly ash and required Federal Standard Certification for pozzolans. • American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) - This nongovernmental organization began preparing standards for fly ash sold and used in the cement and concrete industry in 1947, at the urging of ash marketing firms. Current standards define chemical and physical requirements and is entitled, "Fly Ash and Raw or Calcined Natural Pozzolan for Use as a Mineral Admixture in Portland Cement Concrete (C 618-80)." • State Highway Specifications - Led by Alabama, many states are moving toward permitting - and in some cases requiring-the use of fly ash in portland cement concrete and with lime for base stabilization projects for roads and highways. • Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) - The FAA acts in an advisory capacity. It has final approval on design specifications for airport construction projects. The primary goal of a maintenance information system should be to aid the maintenance department in providing the required equipment or plant availability at the lowest possible cost. To achieve this goal, the system must provide information in support of the following objectives: (1) establishing the best fleet, equipment, and component configuration; (2) establishing the best maintenance program; (3) executing the defined maintenance program efficiently; and (4) monitoring equipment availability. These objectives can be satisfied with five groups of reports. Each of these groups should provide regular, periodic reports to aid in planning and monitoring trends, exception reports to identify problems, and on-request reports to provide analytical capabilities.

The Little Rocky Mountains host epithermal- gold-silver bearing vein and stockwork deposits in a syenite intrusive complex. Pegasus Gold Ltd. is currently mining these oxidized deposits by open-pit methods and recovering gold and silver by heap-leach processes. A geologic program has been designed to effectively determine the basic ore characteristics; 1) mineralization; 2) oxidation; 3) structural setting; 4) lithology; 5) alteration; and ultimately, 6) the leachability of the ore. Geologic mapping, sampling, drilling, assaying, and testing are routinely used in exploration, development, production control, mine planning, and ore reserve estimations. Timely and accurate assay results are essential for the program's success.

Outlined is a review of the application of new selective chelating reagents as flotation collectors; calculation methods for the selection of chelating structures, limitation of the function of commercial chelating agents as collectors, and the synthesis of two new classes of chelating collectors with mixed aliphatic-aromatic structure for oxidized lead-zinc ores. High-grade uranium ores of Cluff Lake and Key Lake mines from the province of Saskatchewan in Canada are treated with nitric and hydrochloric acids with the objective of leaching 230 Th and 226Ra simultaneously with uranium to produce environmentally safe mill tailings, h is found that optimum conditions for uranium leaching are 50°C, 4 h, 30% solids in leach slurry and an acid concentration of 1 mol/L for HNO, for both the ores. In the case of HCl, a 3 mol/L acid concentration is needed and addition of an oxidant is required because otherwise 230Th and 226Ra extractions remain poor.

Steady-state water balance models have historically been used in the management of acid drainage at mine sites. Such systems could be more realistically described by non-steady-state conditions. In addition, the evaluation of alternatives for closure and management of acid drainage must consider non-steady-state conditions. Dynamic systems modeling is a method for simulating water management systems, offering flexibility in: (1) simulating either steady-state or non-steady-state conditions, (2) allowing "what-if' scenario testing. and (3) optimization of operation and closure alternatives. A case study is given for acidic drainage management during closure at a heap leach facility that demonstrates the utility of dynamic systems models.

The Roreto Tunnel is a shallow, twin-bore, road tunnel on the connection between the A6 and the A21 motorway in NW Italy. The challenges faced the design and construction of this tunnel derive from 1) the presence of groundwater, both phreatic and artesian; 2) excavation in loose and/or little cohesive materials; 3) excavation in cohesive materials containing water-saturated, sand lenses; and 4) surface constraints due to the urban environment. In this paper, these problems are examined and the rationale led to the optimum design choices and construction solutions explained. The experience should be useful to others when tunneling in similar situations.

A mobile-modular carbon adsorption mill design and operation for small to medium sized heap leach precious metal mines is presented. In the mobile-modular strategy, charcoal columns with adsorbed metal move from small strategically located carbon adsorption loading stations to a central stripping facility and back. The design has many advantages: 1) It scales-up from pilot plant to full production. 2) It has low capital requirements. 3) Operational costs are competitive with other systems. 4) Mill production can react quickly to changes in ore grade or property area. 5) The solution circuits are simple and easy to maintain. 6) Charcoal damage is reduced.

This paper documents the construction of the Stanley Canyon Tunnel, the geologic conditions encountered, boreability of the rock, and the impacts of the conditions encountered on the construction. The 5.05 kilometer long (3.1 miles), 3.47 meter (11.4 feet) diameter, tunnel was driven through granites with a refurbished tunnel boring machine (TBM). Difficult ground conditions encountered included shear zones, high groundwater flows, and hard, tough, and strong rock. Detailed geotechnical studies during construction revealed that microscopic changes in the rock grain boundaries due to contact metamorphism, resulted in the hard boreability. Originally scheduled for five months, the tunnel construction required nearly three years, including periods of project shutdown.
