Recent advances in computing, rendering and display technologies have generated increased accessibility to virtual reality. Virtual reality allows for the creation of dynamic, high-fidelity environments to simulate dangerous situations and test conditions and to visualize concepts. Consequently, numerous products have been developed, but many of these are limited in scope. Therefore, U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers developed a virtual-reality framework, called VR Mine, to rapidly create an underground mine for human data collection, simulation, visualization and training. This paper describes the features of VR Mine, including mine generation, simulated networks, proximity detection systems, and the integration and visualization of real-time ventilation models.

By offering savings in space and capital cost compared to ducted axial and centrifugal fan systems, horizontally mounted jet fans are commonly used worldwide to ventilate vehicular tunnels. They discharge high-velocity jets to transfer momentum to the surrounding airstream to induce longitudinal flow in the same direction as the jet. Vertically mounted jet fans installed in exhaust shafts have been successfully used to ventilate a large passenger rail overbuild in New York City. A comparison of shaft dimensions, vertical placement of the jet fans and measured shaft airflows is presented to evaluate optimum jet fan configurations. Measured shaft airflows are compared to airflows predicted by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of a three-dimensional model of the overbuild.

"The proposed Channel Tunnel is a critical component of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s (SFPUC) Central Bayside System Improvements Project (CBSIP), which is a key element of a $6.9-billion sewer system improvement program to upgrade its aging and seismically vulnerable wastewater facilities. The tunnel will provide gravity conveyance and storage of combined sewage flows from the northeast sector of San Francisco, CA to the Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant for treatment. The tunnel will be approximately 2.7 km (1.7 miles) long and 7.3 m (24 ft) in internal diameter. It will utilize a single-pass precast concrete segmental lining system. Tunneling challenges include excavating with pressurized face tunnel boring machine (TBM) technology through highly variable ground conditions including the Franciscan Complex (rock and mélange), clayey/silty sands, stiff to hard clay (Old Bay Clay) and mixed-face conditions. The project will also require several deep shafts that will be technically challenging. Project backgroundThe SFPUC is a department of the City and County of San Francisco, CA that provides municipal power, drinking water and wastewater services to San Francisco.San Francisco’s combined sewer system collects both wastewater and stormwater in the same sewers, which is then pumped, treated to stringent state standards and discharged into the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean. The sewer system includes tunnels, large storage/transport boxes, 1,600 km (1,000 miles) of collection sewers, 28 pump stations and three wastewater treatment plants. After decades of service, much of the system is nearing the end of its useful life.The existing system is also vulnerable to seismic damage. During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, damage to SFPUC wastewater infrastructure was extensive. This included the 3,415 m (11,200-ft) long, 1.7m (66-in.) diameter Channel Force Main, built in 1976, and a critical component of the conveyance system. The Channel Force Main carries 70 percent of the bayside dry weather sewage flow from the northern and central part of the city to the Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant for treatment. It is antiquated, not pile-supported and not constructed to current seismic codes. There is also currently no conveyance redundancy for north/central bayside flows to the treatment plant. Figure 1 shows the SFPUC’s wastewater collection system, the existing Channel Force Main and the project location."

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Giana left the small cattle farm where she was raised in 2001 to pursue higher education in the United States. For the past decade at FCX, as a result of her extraordinary combination of technical skill, leadership and commitment to excellence, she has been given positions of progressively greater responsibility from an entry level engineer to senior mine engineer, to chief engineer and now as mine manager, a position rarely held by woman."

Open-source technology to support Industry 4.0 has become the target of academic research in many sectors. This study reviews the trends of open-source technology, its forms, and some industrial applications. As a case study of the use of open-source hardware and software in the mining industry, this study proposed a low-cost environmental monitoring system for nonmetallic underground mines to support mine safety and occupational health. The system was developed using open-source hardware, Arduino and 3D printer, to design the monitoring device, and open-source software, MIT App Inventor, to develop an Android application for smartphones to enable remote communication with the system. Field experiments were conducted at an underground tunnel and a nonmetallic underground mining site to assess the performance of the system in mobile and static modes, respectively. Although a few limitations related to the precision of the low-cost dust and gas sensors exist, the findings of the experiments show that the mining industry can benefit from open-source technology deployment when considering cost factors.

"Keep calm and carry on mining. That has long been the conventional wisdom in the mining industry, a largely cyclical one that has weathered roller-coaster booms and busts. But in the years from 2002 to 2016, an unprecedented steep rise in commodities prices that lasted a decade and then took a sharp turn downward had made it hard for gold and silver miners to stay the course.“The last 15 years highlighted some of the structural and inherent challenges that our industry has, from product price uncertainty to long lead times to the capital intensity of our business,” said Mitchell Krebs, president and chief executive officer of Coeur Mining, who was the luncheon speaker at the American Exploration & Mining Association’s 122nd Annual Meeting held Dec. 5-9, 2016, in Reno, NV.Looking back, Krebs said, “We were given this enormous gift of a commodities super cycle, and the industry kind of blew the opportunity.” While gold prices rose 319 percent and silver prices rose more than 200 percent over the 2002 to 2016 period, the XAU index of 30 gold and silver mining companies’ stock prices went up by only 20 percent.Entering 2016, precious-metals prices have made a comeback, with gold rallying strongly from a six-year low at the start of the year. This time, the industry is ready. Companies are leaner and meaner, with lower costs, reduced debt and an increased focus on higher grades and quality ounces. Although opportunities were missed in the past, the industry has got its act together and is now well positioned to take advantage of a price upswing and even to show profits when prices fall, as they did in August 2016, pushed down by a strong dollar."

"In order to study the removal efficiency of Cu2+ from acid mine drainage by prepared bentonite-steel slag composite particles, adsorption experiment was carried out. The composite particles were characterized by X-ray Diffraction analysis technique (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometer (FTIR). The results show that: the composite particles can release alkali to neutralize the acid of acid mine drainage; the adsorption and chemical precipitation of Cu2+ occurred in the whole reaction process; the removal amount of composite particles on Cu2+ was 9.88 mg/g when the reaction reached equilibrium; the FTIR spectra revealed the existence of surface complexation; the SEM micrographs suggested that the composite particles would continue to adsorb and coagulate Cu2+ after the composite particles surface adsorbing Cu2+ and forming precipitate, namely, there was synergistic reaction of adsorption and coagulation; the XRD patterns further showed the existence of cation exchange and revealed that the states of Cu2+ in the surface of the composite particles was Cu-Si-O mineral phase and CuO(Cu(OH)2) polymerization precipitation. The bentonite-steel slag composite particles which can play a role of adsorption-coagulation synergism are excellent multifunctional green environmental mineral materials to treat acid mine drainage containing heavy metal ions.Introduction It is reported (Zuo and He 2013) that with the rapid development of industry, the world demand for mineral resources is increasing, while the problem of mine environmental pollution is becoming more and more serious due to the large amount of mining. The pollution of mine wastewater has become a global problem, in which acid mine drainage (AMD) is one of the most serious waste water. It is also reported (Cong and Zhao 2003) that acid mine drainage containing high concentrations of heavy metals and having low pH value, causing serious negative influence to the mining production and ecological environment. Acid mine drainage is one of the most serious environmental pollution to the mining industry. In recent years, it has been widely concerned by scholars at home and abroad."

The McKinley Mine is a large strip operation sup-plying coal to several utility and industrial customers. The mine reserve comprises many coal seams of varying quality and thickness. Erosion of the terrain has created coal out-crop lines that are encountered frequently with associated deviations in quality. Due to the complex nature of the coal reserve and the various customer quality requirements, coal quality control is a primary consideration and a constant challenge at the McKinley Mine. This paper will discuss the practices employed to ensure that the available coal meets contract specifications.

Increased emphasis on industrial pollution control has intensified investigation of waste treatment technology for methods of reducing the amount of pollutants discharged by industry. The mining and mineral processing industry can point to a record of considerable accomplishment in the field of wastewater treatment and reclamation because these operations are so frequently an integral part of the entire operation of an ore dressing facility. This is amply demonstrated by metal producers in the arid regions of the Southwest where water shortages require maximum use of available water. For example, the copper industry in Arizona during 1960 employed an estimated 184 billion gallons of water of which 87% was reused water. (1) Only 0.0003% was discharged to streams and the remainder was consumed by evaporation (8%) and seepage (5%). The most severe pollution problem facing the mining and ore processing industry today is that resulting from acid mine drainage. This problem is largely associated with the mining of coal although it occurs to a lesser degree with the mining of other materials. The degradation of streams by acid mine drainage in the vicinity' of the Appalachian coal fields has been widely publicized and a major effort is underway to determine the best means of correcting this situation. Other forms of pollution from mining operations are less well-known, but it is anticipated that improved or advanced waste treatment techniques will be required for segments of the industry to comply with new pollution control regulations. The current emphasis on redefining hazardous levels for heavy metals and various chemicals with regard to the total environment will in all likelihood lead to tighter discharge controls in some cases. Bigger flotation cells can result in larger froth surface areas and longer froth transport distances, this has been credited to impact froth recovery. Thanks to recent advancements, the newer flotation machines can be designed with different launder and crowder arrangements to enhance froth management. Nevertheless, lower head grades, complex ores and even larger mechanical flotation cells can lead to insufficient froth collection, even if the cell is equipped with the most recent flotation advancements like the center launder design. Aforementioned issue can become critical at the end of the flotation row. Increased crowding has been proven to be a solution to overcome inadequate froth recovery. However, scaling-up crowders for larger flotation cells can rise challenges, particularly in terms of structural limits and design for service. This paper presents the development journey for the Spider Crowder Upgrade, an advancement to improve froth collection in large flotation cells that are already equipped with center launders.

One of the major ignition sources of fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines is flame cutting and welding. On May 20, 2006, a flame-cutting operation at the Darby Mine No. 1 led to an explosion that resulted in five fatalities. On Jan. 22, 2003, another explosion caused by flame cutting at the McElroy Mine resulted in three fatalities and three serious injuries. On June 22, 1999, a flame-cutting and welding operation at the Loveridge Mine caused a fire that required sealing the mine for an extended period. On March 19, 1992, an explosion initiated by welding at the Blacksville No. 1 Mine resulted in four fatalities. These examples of mine incidents demonstrate the need to conduct research to develop best practices for safely conducting flame cutting and welding in underground coal mines. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study on fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines that were caused by flame-cutting and welding operations to determine the root causes of these types of incidents. The methodology included interviewing mining personnel who perform flame-cutting or welding operations in underground U.S. coal mines and visiting mines to observe these operations. In addition, MSHA reports of investigations and accidents statistics were analyzed. The findings were used to identify and compare differences between flame-cutting and welding practices and techniques in small and large mines, eastern and western mines, low-seam and high-seam mines, room-and-pillar and longwall mines, and between experienced miners and new miners. As a result of this study, best practices were developed to reduce the number of ?res and explosions caused by flame cutting and welding. This paper provides a summary of this research.

"INTRODUCTIONTwin bored tunnels are commonly used for a variety of road and tunnel projects throughout the world. A major component of these twin tunnel projects is the construction of connecting cross passages that provide emergency access between tunnels and space for tunnel service equipment. Cross passages can present significant geotechnical risk and technical challenges to a project – support systems must be considered for redistributing loads around the mainline tunnel openings and supporting new loading resulting from excavation activities. Additionally, cross passages pose risks to construction schedule and cost because of their sequencing at the end of construction, so mitigation of schedule overruns can be critical. By observing field instrumentation data records from completed projects, a betterunderstanding of the force development in each temporary structure can be achieved with indication of which structures are the most critical to support ground loads.This paper discusses the data obtained during the Brisbane Airport Link construction project, a road tunnel located in Brisbane, Australia. Strain gauge instrumentation data from the precast segmental lining and propped opening steel sets is presented with relation to the construction sequence and local geology. Interpretations and conclusions based on the observed trends are proposed, with several key mechanisms affecting the loading and unloading identified.Brisbane Airport Link Project OverviewThe Brisbane Airport Link project in Brisbane, Australia, connects central Brisbane to the airport located northeast of the downtown with over 7km of twin-bore road tunnels, two lanes each, with several caverns, interchanges, and access ramps constructed along the alignment to connect to other key routes in the city. The project was executed under a Public-Private Partnership (P3) scheme, funded and operated by the consortium BrisConnections. The main contractors were a joint venture of John Holland and Theiss, while the design was carried out by Arup and Parsons Brinckerhoff.Construction of the tunnels was conducted using a combination of 17 roadheaders and two 12.5m double-shield Herrenknecht TBMs [1]. The TBMs were used in EPB-type closed mode for the initial portion of their drive, starting at the northeast end of the alignment. Tunneling started in soft ground, weathered rock, and mixed face conditions initially, progressing to competent sedimentary rocks as the drive continued. Support was accomplished using a 12.1 m diameter steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) segmental lining installed behind the TBMs in a 9 segments + 1 key arrangement. The innovative design of these segments is detailed in the paper by Harding and Francis [2]. Ancillary roads and underground interchange caverns were constructed by sequential excavation techniques using roadheaders, accounting for nearly half of the total underground excavations."

Talc is used as an essential ingredient in a wide variety of plastics applications ranging from polyester body patch compounds through polypropylene automotive, appliance, and household furniture components to high performance parts made from liquid crystal engineering resins. The paper focuses on polyolefin applications; the three tier market for talc in polypropylene; the effects of various talcs in typical compounds; and trends in each market segment. Emphasis is given to emerging markets, examples of which are polypropylene compounds which mimic higher cost resins, and polyethylene films, customer requirements for talcs for these purposes are discussed.

Sixty years ago, underground coal mining was the most hazardous job in the United States. Roof falls killed about 100 miners every year, more than all other causes put together. Fast forward half a century to 2016, and the first year ever with zero roof fall fatalities. Just three miners were killed by roof falls during the following six years. To understand how this historic goal was achieved, this study analyzed hundreds of roof fall fatality reports covering five decades. It found that the immediate effect of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (Coal Act) was to reduce the riskiest activities, like needlessly going under unsupported roof. Other hazards, like large roof falls, required technological developments before they were brought under control. Roof control plans, which the U.S. Bureau of Mines had been advocating since the 1920s, fostered the necessary improvements in both the safety culture and the mining technology.

"Sometimes it’s the smallest things that make the biggest difference. In the world of mining, erosion can lead to small cracks, which can then lead to bigger problems that, over time, can eventually lead to a catastrophic event. However, when managed correctly, as in the case of the Manefey Slide at the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah, the damage can be minimized.Numerous industry conferences, technical papers, studies and resources are dedicated to these issues each year, but what is sometimes overlooked is how the erosion of personal ethics can also have life-changing effects.At the 2019 SME Minnesota Conference, April 15-17 in Duluth, MN, two inmates serving their respective prison sentences at the U.S. Federal Prison Camp in Duluth spoke to the conference about how small cracks in their ethical foundations grew over time, eventually leading each man to his new address at the minimum-security facility.The men’s full names were not released and they were introduced as Jeff and Tony. Other than the matching green uniforms, both middle-aged men could have fit in with the rest of the crowd. They are well-educated and articulate whose career paths eroded thanks to greed and careless decisions.Tony, a licensed professional engineer, enjoyed a successful career working in contract oversight for the U.S. Department of Defense. Jeff is a former senior vice president of investments who ran a well-respected investment management team. Both spoke openly about the mistakes they made and emphasized that their crimes were not flagrant violations of the black and white rules but grew from ethical violations that live in the gray area between black and white, and right and wrong.Working in contract oversight for the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), Tony said he was befriended by a wealthy man who was generous with his money. As Tony told it, a few meals with this man led to a few trips to casinos and eventually to gifts of money. The donor did not ask for anything in return, and at the time, Tony said he did not think that he was doing anything wrong. He admits now that the perception of a high-ranking officer in the DOD accepting gifts is not a good one, as it could be construed as the donor might have been trying to gain favor for future contracts; which is how it was presented in court by the prosecution team."

This paper summarizes the results of an experimental program conducted to characterize the moment-rotation behavior of skewed flat radial joints from large diameter (45 ft) tunnel lining. Both positive and negative joint moment-rotation behaviors were measured experimentally using two-segment joint combination assemblies. The results are compared to closed form methodologies used by designers, e.g., the Janssen method. The differences in observed and model behavior are discussed within the context of design practice.

"The Colorado School of Mines has used the Edgar Mine in Idaho Springs as an experimental mine to teach students since 1921. Since the school acquired the former gold, silver, lead and zinc mine, countless students have received hands-on engineering lessons on their way to earning mining engineering degrees. On Dec. 14, the House Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources held a historic field hearing about the future of mining education in the United States in a classroom about 300 m (1,000 ft) inside the Edgar Mine. Representatives Doug Lamborn (R-CO), Rob Bishop (R-UT), Cresent Hardy (R-NV) and Ed Perlmutter (D-CO) were on hand for the first ever congressional hearing held in a mine where they heard testimony supporting the Mining School Enhancement Act, which was introduced to Congress by Hardy and Perlmutter on Oct. 9, 2015. The act, which is part of a larger mining development and reclamation reform package, seeks to address the absence of a viable pipeline necessary to replenish current faculty vacancies in United States Mining Schools. “What better place to hold a hearing to discuss the need for future mining engineering experts,” Subcommittee Chair Lamborn said in his opening statement. “It is a need felt by industry, states, the federal government as well as nonprofits.” The Mining School Enhancement Act would redirect millions of dollars in fees that are being collected from active mining operations to fund the research and educational programs at engineering schools with mining programs. Those fees now are being used in the form of grants awarded by the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMRCA)."

The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT), under sponsorship of the U. S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research (OCR), and the American Gas Association (A. G. A. ), has been undertaking the development of one of several processes to convert coal to high-Btu gas as a means of supplementing natural gas supplies. It is anticipated that there will be a significant need for such gas in the foreseeable future in order to meet the ever increasing demands for this preferred fuel form. HISTORY The development of the HYGAS® Process is based on various studies conducted at IGT starting back as far as 1945. Initial work was directed toward production of synthesis gas with subsequent catalytic methanation. By 1964 the concept of the direct hydrogenation of coal to produce methane noncatalytically was well-founded and the chemistry was reasonably well established. Work up until this point in time was financed by the American Gas Association. In 1964 the U. S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research joined with A. G. A. to support the program. The objective at that time was to develop the necessary know-how to enable the design of a pilot plant, a necessary step in the ultimate commercialization of the process. Work for the next three years (1964-1967) emphasized investigation of fluidized-bed technology in the hydrogasification step, where moving-bed technology had been previously employed, as well as identification of commercially available catalysts acceptable for catalytic methanation of the CO and hydrogen in the hydrogasifier effluent under operating conditions in the system. By 1967, the preliminary design of a 3 ton/hr pilot plant had been finalized, and IGT received authorization from OCR to proceed with the detailed design and construction of that facility. Every year more and more mining companies are entering joint ventures to look for minerals. Large companies join large companies, small companies join small companies, and large companies join small companies. Mining companies join oil companies, chemical companies, machinery companies, and companies with no other connection to the minerals business. And well they might, for here is a way for both minerals-oriented companies and those that have no background or knowledge of the minerals business to get actively involved in an outwardly-attractive but high-risk enterprise with the chance to participate in a lucrative minerals find. Thus, for reasons beyond those normally associated with joint ventures in many other fields, corporations, companies, groups, and even individuals are looking to joint exploration ventures as the answer to all problems of getting into or staying in mining.
