Rock mass properties testing for determining strength parameters is an integral part of geomechanics. These tests are performed either in a laboratory environment or in a field (in-situ). The authors share their experience in using numerical modelling in simulating the laboratory test procedures. This approach helps studying the rock breakage and failure mechanism more efficiently and provides a high degree of visualization. Moreover, imperfections and discontinuities can be easily incorporated in these models. This capability of providing arbitrary fractures and discontinuities facilitates in building a large knowledgebase of rock strength and failure mechanisms. This knowledgebase may then be used to generate heuristics for determining rock strengths for rock mass with fractures and discontinuities.

A residential metals abatement program has been underway in Butte for more than 20 years. More than 1,350 yard and attic cleanups were completed by the end of 2018; most triggered by lead. While the focus is on remediation of residential soil and house dust, the program also includes a blood lead monitoring program with identification and abatement of additional sources of exposure for children with elevated blood lead levels (BLLs). As specified in the remediation program, studies are being conducted every 5 years to assess BLL data collected from Butte children. The first two studies have evaluated over 6,000 BLLs from 2003 through 2017 and evaluated trends over this time period, by Butte neighborhood, and as compared to areas outside of Butte. These studies showed that rates of elevated BLLs (i.e., those above 5 µg/dL) in Butte children have declined dramatically since 2002 but have been declining much more slowly since 2011. Improved rates of confirmation testing are needed to verify the rates of elevated BLLs. While the RMAP likely has contributed to these declines in BLLs the magnitude of impact cannot be quantified.

This paper examines Bolivia's General Environmental Bill recently passed by Congress: a multi-purpose law with two primary objectives: a) the protection and conservation of the environment, and b) the promotion of sustainable development. In this law, environmental benefits are emphasized by stating general principles, not by attempting to define the means. Regulations are left to the writing of subsequent complementary codes. This paper shows that much of the controversy surrounding the legislation disappears when it is seen as guide rather than an operational part of Bolivia's industrial policy. In essence, the law addresses recent environmental awareness in a region more anxious than ever to speed economic growth.

The adsorption behavior of silver in ammoniacal solutions on activated carbon was studied. In addition to the concentration of ammonia, the parameters that affect adsorption include temperature, degree of agitation and anion and cation concentrations. In the study, it was found that the adsorption of silver from ammoniacal solutions is dependent on the initial silver concentration in the solution. It was also found that the recovery of silver from ammoniacal solutions is not as effective us gold. The adsorption rate was relatively slow overall, despite a rapid initial adsorption. The apparent activation energy ,for the adsorption was measured at 30.2 kJ/mol. It was believed that the kinetics of the silver adsorption on activated carbon was limited by a mixed control mechanism.

The requirements of metals by modern society have created big challenges for mining engineers minerals processing engineers, metallurgical engineers and economists to produce these metals economically from mineral deposits which contain, with time, less and less value. The advances of science and technology allow, today, the exploitation of mineral deposits which only few years ago would not have been considered economical. However, there are limitations both on the minimum grade of recoverable values contained in the ore to be fed to a mill or on the concentrate to be smelted, and on the maximum content of "impurities" i.e. chemical elements which are difficult or expensive to refine from the ore, from the concentrate or from the metal. It is also known that the cost of treatment in a mill or in a smelter, for unit of metal contained in the ore or in the concentrate, increases as the grade of the recoverable values contained in them decreases and also if the content of impurities increases. Added value is a term loosely used in the industry, but what exactly does it mean? What does it take to make a value-added product and more importantly how does a company maintain the value added to its products? Most people agree that value-added means the value of a mineral minus the cost to produce it. But what is misleading is that producing value added products does not necessarily guarantee the profitability of the products. In some cases firms that make "value-added" products are not very profitable. It is not only important to understand how to make a value-added product but also how competitive forces in the market can erode the value added. Therefore, when we look at value-added opportunities, we must understand how to obtain the value added and more importantly how to maintain the value. There are four major factors that limit a company's ability to add value to its products. This paper will examine these factors and will use the ground calcium carbonate and mica industries as examples.

Recent research conducted by NIOSH, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory showed that electrical current levels permitted under present regulations may not limit cable temperatures to less than 90°C in reeled trailing cables. Reeled cables, tightly wrapped with many turns, all carrying current in an enclosed space, can become overheated due to poor heat transfer. This overheating can cause the cable insulation to soften and become easily damaged. The damaged insulation reduces the life of the cable and can lead to shock, electrocution, and mine fires. This paper describes a method of measuring the conductor temperature of mine trailing cables during normal operation. The temperature is measured using a 50/125 micrometer Graded Index Multimode Optical Fiber located in the center of the metallic conductors. Distributed temperature measurements are made using an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR). This system is capable of measuring temperature with an accuracy of plus or minus one degree centigrade over a length of 4 km at 1-m intervals. With this unique way of measuring temperature, tests can be conducted simulating actual mine conditions and provide important data to allow MSHA's Approval and Certification Center to develop approval criteria for cyclically rated reeled machines.

"Solvent extraction of copper pregnant solution (PLS) obtained from ammonium peroxodisulfate assisted leach was modeled using response surface methodology. Mixing speed, pH, reagent concentration and organic to aqueous (O/A) ratio were selected for testing. A pitched blade mixer was used in the experiment. Mixer speed contributed significantly to copper extraction significant, while pH had minimal effect on copper extraction. The response model developed has an R2 = 0.97 and Adeq precision of 28.3. A parallel kinetic comparing study using a straight blade Rushton turbine in a turbulent regime of mixing showed no difference (p-value =0.308) between peroxodisulfate assisted leach PLS and conventional ferric/sulfuric acid leach PLS- the power draw data support this conclusion. INTRODUCTION High arsenic chalcopyrite concentrates are a problem to the smelters all over the world due to high arsenic gas emissions during smelting. Therefore leaching is often the alternative for extracting the copper in these concentrates if dilution with low arsenic concentrate is not possible. High-pressure autoclave leaching is used. Alternatively, the use of stronger oxidants such as peroxodisulfate has been proposed [16, 18]. There is a concern brought up by the hydrometallurgy community about the faith of the organic extracting reagent coming into contact with stronger oxidant residue in the pregnant leach solution (PLS) and hence the efficiency of such extraction process. This work, therefore, looks to answer such concerns. PLS generated from leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate with the peroxodisulfate ion was used in this solvent extraction experiment. As a liquid-liquid extraction, solvent extraction involves contacting the aqueous PLS with organic extractant via mixing. Mixing is known to increase the interfacial area for mass transfer by decreasing the diffusion path length (Jussi et al.1997). EXPERIMENT Instruments and Reagents Reagent grade Acorga 5910 reagent was used in the experiment was supplied by Cytec (Current name Solvay), Ammonium peroxodisulfate and sulfuric acid were reagent grade obtained from Amazon. With new mineral deposits found in areas of difficult terrain, and annual production capacity increasing in mines over the last decade, the aerial ropeway is proving to be a viable, economic method of transportation from mine to processing plant. Of the more conventional designs, a bicable ropeway is more suited to difficult country than the simpler monocable. The bicable, however, does have limitations in the difference in levels it can accommodate in one section at a given capacity. This is noticeable where hilly terrain and high capacity imposes a limit on the length of each section. Increasing the number of sections for a relatively short conveying distance tends, in the case of conventional bicable, to unbalance the normally favorable economics of the ropeway. In addition to analyzing hauling rope stresses, other areas have to be considered when looking at high capacity ropeways. Bucket capacity, speed, and the wheel load on track ropes are examples. These and other factors led British Ropeway Engineering Co., of Sevenoaks, Kent, UK, to produce the twin-track system. Using twin track ropes, larger capacity buckets, and, if the height differential warrants, the installation of twin hauling ropes, BRECO produced a ropeway design for areas of hilly terrain and at higher capacities than had been considered suitable for aerial ropeways. Designs have been produced for systems handling 1.5 kt/h (1,650 stph), and the potential exists for expansion to above 2 kt/h (2,200 stph). The arrangement of ropes provides high stability of the cars and is especially suited to areas where high winds occur during normal operation. This development allows the aerial ropeway to be applied economically in difficult areas and at the increasingly high capacities demanded by engineers. Ropeway Transports Limestone to Sudan Cement Plant Maspio Cement Corp. of Atbara, Sudan, will soon use an aerial ropeway to deliver its entire limestone requirement 20 km (12 miles) from quarry to plant. The Atbara plant is located north of Khartoum, near the east bank of the Nile River. The quarry is west of the river, in hills rising from flat desert country. The original transport system was a 24-km (15-mile) railway from the quarry to the west bank and a monocable ropeway that crossed the Nile and continued to the fac¬tory, a distance of about 2.5 km (1.5 miles). This presentation is about a small company, Industrial Mineral Products, that was formed in 1972 with one product and one customer and by a series of value-added changes avoided disaster and increased sales many times over. The principal of the company stopped by my office in Seattle looking for industrial mineral opportunities in the Northwest. We got together and went through all the minerals in Ladoo's "Industrial Minerals" from Abrasives to Zircon to see if we could find something available on the vast holdings of the Burlington Northern. At that time one of our lessees was operating a silica sand mine near Ravensdale, Washington and indicated that he might be interested in selling out. This sounded interesting to my client and within two weeks the transaction was completed.

Geochemical exploration guidelines were developed from a study of 460 rock chip samples collected at nine disseminated gold deposits in Nevada. Obtaining high grade Au samples is difficult because gold content is extremely variable, even over 8 m (25 ft) distances. For reconnaissance sampling, pathfinder elements are reliable indicators with threshold values of 100 ppm As, 1 ppm Hg, and 50 ppm Sb. Arsenic is the most reliable of the three elements, being significantly enriched in all deposits. If the pathfinder threshold levels are reached with low Au content, more samples should be collected. Successful disseminated gold exploration requires large numbers of samples.

Public Service Company of Oklahoma began burning sub-bituminous coal in December, 1979. Initially PSO had a single source coal supply from Jacobs Ranch Mine, and in 1982 added deliveries from Clovis Point mine. Both are Powder River Basin (Wyoming) coal mines. In 1986 PSO began burning Oklahoma coal to meet Oklahoma's 10% native use law. PSO experienced random s lagging during certain blends of these coals. PSO installed a boiler performance system to help control the slagging problems from the various coal blends, to improve boiler efficiency, and increase total coal consumption.

Introduction Evidence from blast furnace operations has indicated that using pellets with a higher ISO low temperature reducibility, a lower SiO2 content, and better resistance to low temperature degradation results in considerable coke savings and improved furnace operation. Although these benefits could not be directly related to reducibility differences alone, we believed there was sufficient evidence of the advantages in improved pellet reducibility to warrant laboratory investigation of ways and means to effect such improvements. It is well known that pellet reducibility can be significantly altered by changes in the basicity and the amount of non-iron oxide constituents. Past work (Friel and Erickson, 1980, 1982; Saeki et al., 1977; Thanning, 1974) has shown that with increased MgO contents, and at optimum CaO/S1O2 ratios, significant improvement in low temperature reducibility can be attained. The improved properties of such fluxed pellets have reportedly led to increased blast furnace efficiency and productivity (Saeki et al., 1977; Ilmoni, 1975). Less well known, however, is exactly what factors control reducibility in acid pellets. Because of this gap in knowledge, studies were undertaken of the factors affecting reducibility in acid pellets and to estimate their relative significances in modifying reduction behavior. This paper describes that part of our work done to determine the effect of bentonite on reduction behavior. Our approach was to first examine the effect of bentonite's presence on as pure an iron oxide as possible (i.e., a magnetite "superconcentrate" containing about 0.2% SiO2) so as to eliminate any gangue-binder interaction. The next step was to look at bentonite effects on concentrates with only limited amounts of gangue (containing about 1% SiO2), but of two different types, simple and complex silicates. Last, we

Conductive metal powders are important building blocks for today's micro-electronic circuitry. Formulated into inks, they provide the interconnects needed to complete a complex integrated circuit and the means to enter the world of miniaturization. Traditionally, the inks have been based upon expensive metals such as silver, palladium, platinum and gold because of their excellent electrical conductivity and resistance to corrosion and oxidation. The use of a copper based ink, as an alternative to precious metal inks, recently has received considerable attention. Instability in the prices and limited supply of certain precious metal systems have driven up production costs, making the development of a lower cost copper system more attractive to manufacturers. However, lower production costs are on1 y real ized if performance and reliability can be maintained. While the development has been driven by cost, copper does offer some significant performance advantages over noble metal systems: conductivity as good as silver and 4W better than gold; leach resistance better than silver and equal to gold; stability at high frequencies better than gold or silver; strong film bonding characteristics; and compatibility with most solders. These benefits, however, do not come without cost. The inherently reactive nature of pure copper, while providing unique performance properties, makes it difficult to process. Unl i ke precious metals which can be fired in air, copper would oxidize and so requires special furnaces and atmospheres. Despite these difficulties, the transition from precious metal thick film systems to copper is gaining momentum. Manufacturers of high density, high performance circuitry are exploring the performance advantages of copper over gold and silver and the manufacturers of consumer products are considering the potential cost savings of copper over silver-palladium. Sherritt has developed a fine copper powder for this industry. Through association with the ink manufacturers, it has been found that performance properties of the ink vary with the physical and chemical characteristics of the powder. Production Process The production of very fine copper powders at Sherritt is based upon the disproportionation of cuprous ions as outlined in Equation [1] (1).

The selection of efficiency machinery for an underground mining system is a highly skilled art. Modern techniques of mining, based on sound engineering principles, increase the probability of success. These techniques alone, however, will not guarantee maximum productivity. Human judgement, based on experience with mineral seams and geological conditions, remains the single most important input of the decision-making techniques in selecting high production equipment. The myth of a "Scientific Selection Factor" is absurd. The belief that such a factor exists can waste the time and resources of mining management. Until now, mineral extraction from the original desposit has defied all attempts to systematize the knowledge. Computerized programs are excellent for solving underground transportation and ventilation problems. The variables can be defined by mathe¬matical techniques in this type of problem. By the same, token, "Trial and Error" is not an acceptable method in today's technology-minded world. The candid truth of the matter is that practically nothing is known of the phenomenon of extracting a mineral from the solid. Likewise, local conditions make it nearly impossible to predict accurately the reaction of surrounding strata after the mineral has been removed. The unpredictability of the environment resulting from extracting minerals underground will remain a challenge to mining engineers for many years. In fact, we are barely beyond the trial and error stage at this point in time.

The quality of our environment is of great importance to all of us. Today, there is a great public concern about the degradation of our air, land, and water and the resultant slow death of our planet Earth. The miner has always been concerned with his environment. Historically, mining has been a part of the frontier. As a result, the miner has pioneered and developed many parts of the world. In the beginning, he had to hack out a place for his mine, himself, and his family. He was given accolades and praise for his accomplishments. Now, however, he is attacked as a ravager of the landscape. It was and is no different on the Marquette Iron Range in Marquette County, located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Iron ore was discovered in 1845 and mining was begun by 1848. Over nearly 1 ¼ centuries, a total of 379,197,000 tons have been shipped to market. Ports, docks, railroads, and towns all had to be built in order to get that tonnage out to iron and steel makers. In those early days the environment had to be mastered, not pampered.

In just over a generation, the United States bentonite industry has grown from almost a rake and shovel operation into one with a multimillion ton annual production rate and exports to all corners of the globe. Bentonite production, pressed to keep pace with the soaring demand, has increased more than 10 fold in the last 30 years. The worldwide demand for bentonite is expected to double during the next eight to ten years. It remains to be seen whether U.S. producers will be able to maintain the dominant position in the world market. It should be noted that accurate statistical information regarding production or market information is difficult or impossible to obtain abroad and also within the United States. Published information obtained in response to questionnaires of the Bureau of Mines tends to be on the conservative side. FOUNDRY It has only been in the last thirty or forty years that bentonite has become an indispensible part of the age old metal casting industry. The relationship has proven most beneficial to both industries and promises to be long lasting. The development of flotation machines since the first industrial use of the process can be divided into three stages. The first, up to about 1930, was marked by diversity in the means for contacting floatable mineral with the air/ water interface and for generating the interface, as well as in cell design. By 1927 Taggart (1) could list 170 patents covering flotation cells, and he mentioned dozens which were or had been in operation. He divided cells into eight categories according to design, type of separating interface, and where in the cell and how separation took place. These were: (1) Film or skin flotation with wet or dry oiling of surfaces; (2) pulp body process with bubbles generated chemically by pressure reduction, by vacuum or by boiling; (3) agitation-froth processes involving local supersaturation with air; (4) bubble column; (5) pneumatic; (6) cascade; (7) subaeration; and (8) combination and miscellaneous types and processes. Most widely used then were the agitation-froth, sub- aeration, pneumatic types. By 1943 a significant reduction in categories had occurred to the two main divisions of mechanical and pneumatic cells according to whether agitation and aeration were (a) by an impeller with or without compressed air, or (b) by compressed air alone. Cells at that time were still relatively small; the Morenci Concentrator completed in 1942 used 432 1.7m3 (60 cu ft) Fagergrens for roughing 45,000 and later up to 55,000 t/d.
