Eliminate accidental tramming of a cleanup tractor. Approach A switch was installed in the operator's seat cushion to pre-vent the cleanup tractor from tramming without an operator in the driver's seat. How It Works The operator must be seated, and the Forward/Reverse Switch (that controls tramming direction) must pass through the NEUTRAL position before the vehicle will tram. See Figure 1. A pressure-sensitive seat cushion switch, a solid-state relay, and a double-contact relay were added to the control circuitry of an S & S BMUAT -88 cleanup tractor to create this tramming interlock. The weight of the operator on the cushion closes the seat cushion switch (Figure 2, A). This activates the solid-state relay (B), which completes the initial circuitry. Moving the For- ward/Reverse Switch (C) to NEUTRAL energizes the coil in the double-contact relay (D) and closes both contacts. One contact completes a sustaining circuit which keeps the double-contact relay energized. The second contact transfers power to the remaining contacts within the Forward/ Reverse Switch. These circuits are shown in greater de- tail in Figure 2.

Research undertaken by the Bureau of Mines in 1938 has resulted in the development of titanium from a laboratory curiosity to a commercial metal. Along with processes for producing the metal, it was necessary for the Bureau to develop methods for analyzing the metal, raw materials, and intermediate products. Some of the methods developed have been published.3 4 5/ General Services Administration (GSA) was responsible for purchasing titanium metal under Defense Production Act contracts with commercial producers. GSA designated the Federal Bureau of Mines to analyze this metal and establish its compliance with Government specifications. A substantial quantity of tin was found in some of the samples analyzed, and in July 1957 tin was added to the list of impurity elements to be determined. The specifications limited the amount of tin in titanium sponge to a maximum of 0.10 percent. A program was immediately initiated to investigate methods and techniques for determining tin in the range of 0 to 1.0 percent. A method accurate at the 0.10 percent level was necessary, as this level was the critical range for acceptance or rejection of the metal.

Significant effects of in-the-mill drying on the pulverization of lignite have been demonstrated in an experimental impact-type pulverizer by tests in which the primary variable was temperature of the sweeping gas. Reduced power requirements and increased product fineness were observed as the extent of drying was increased. Pulverization with in-the-mill drying was studied in comparative tests made on lignites from five mine sources. All of the lignites responded in a similar manner; however, differences in the pulverizing characteristics of the individual lignites were significant. For one lignite, the electrical input to the pulverizer driving motor with minimum sweeping-gas temperature was 33.9 kw.-hr. per ton, decreasing to 14.0 kw.-hr. per ton with a sweeping-gas temperature of 658° F.; for another lignite, at comparable operating conditions, the electrical input decreased from 59.1 to 19.0 kw.-hr. per ton. In the first case, the product fineness increased with increasing temperature of sweeping gas from 65.2 to 79.2 percent through a 200-mesh sieve, and in the second case, from b2.7 to 86.9 percent through a 200-mesh sieve.

5. General Escapeway Requirements 5.1 Escape Routes Present escapeway regulations state "Every mine shall have two separate properly maintained escapeways to the surface which are so positioned that damage to one shall not lessen the effectiveness of the other, or a method of refuge shall be provided when only one opening to the surface is possible." "Escape routes shall be a. Inspected at regular intervals and maintained in safe, travellable condition, b. Marked with conspicuous and easily read direction signs that clearly indicate the ways of escape." "Application. "Regular" intervals means at intervals no greater than monthly where conditions are stable and oftener where conditions may change." "Designated escapeways inclined more than 30* from the horizontal shall be equipped with stairways, ladders, cleated walkways, or emergency hoisting facilities." As can be noted in present and proposed regulations there must be two separate properly maintained escapeways. In most operations, the escapeways will consist of one route that is the normal travelway used in day to day operations. The second route is usually a return airway through old work areas. Based on this generally accepted practice, we will designate the two types as primary and secondary.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch-and small-scale continuous flotation processing tests on waste granite fines from Georgia, to determine the feasibility of recovering usable feldspar and quartz products by flotation. Two flotation methods were utilized for the removal of biotite and other iron-bearing minerals: One was in an acid-cationic circuit, and the other in an alkaline-anionic-cationic circuit. Feldspar was recovered using an acid-cationic method. To produce commercial-grade feldspar and quartz products it was necessary to employ either two sequential froth flotation circuits or one froth flotation circuit supplemented by wet-magnetic separation techniques to remove iron contaminants. Continuous flotation processing yielded a commercial-grade feldspar concentrate containing, in percent, 3.8 Na20, 5.4 K20, and 1.10 CaO, with recoveries of 77.8, 70.3, and 64.4, respectively. The feldspar tailing was high-quality glass sand containing 98.2 percent SiO2 and 0.024 percent Fe2O3. About 42 percent of the quartz was recovered at glass sand specifications. An effective separation of, potash feldspar from the bulk feldspar concentrate was achieved by batch flotation in a mineral separation cell.

Arsenic-containing flue dusts are currently being stockpiled by several nonferrous smelters in the United States. These stockpiles are a source of environmental concern since the dusts can be transported by wind and contain water-soluble arsenic. The stockpiles also represent an alternate source of metals. To provide a quality environment, the Bureau of Mines investigated a process to make environmentally acceptable the discard of arsenic obtained from the treatment of arsenical flue dust. The process includes (1) leaching arsenic from a lead smelter copper dross flue dust, (2) fixing arsenic as an insoluble compound, and (3) recovering other metal values. Overall results of acid-leaching tests on lead-smelter flue dusts showed that H2S04 dissolved 80 to 90 percent of the As, Zn, and Cd, and up to 86 percent of the In. Pb, Ag, and Au remain in the residue, which can be recycled to the smelter. Indium was recovered from the strong acid leach solution by solvent extraction; arsenic was fixed in a stable form by precipitation with Fe2(S04)3 and CaO or CaC03.

The Bureau of Mines developed a hydrometallurgical method for recovering mercury metal from mercury sulfide concentrates. Sulfide flotation concentrate from the McDermitt Mine was leached in a cupric chloride solution at 80° C. The redox potential of the solution was maintained at 850 mV during leaching by chlorine sparging. Mercury extractions exceeded 99 pct in 3 h of leaching. After leaching, the pH of the solu-tion was increased from 1 to 4.5 to precipitate copper as atacamite. The pregnant solution typically containing 100 giL Hg was sent to elec-trolysis to produce high-purity mercury metal and chlorine for recycle. In a 200-A electrolytic cell operated for 24 h, current efficiency was 99 pct and the energy requirement was 0.9 kW·h/lb of mercury produced. Mercury removal from the waste stream was also investigated. Iron or zinc cementation, sulfide precipitation with H2S, and activated carbon adsorption all decreased the mercury concentration from 10 giL to 0.01 mglL, which is less than the Environmental Protection Agency limit on wastewater of 0.02 mg/L.

Reduce spillage hazards and contamination when adding hydraulic nil to mining machine reservoirs. Approach An easily transported module, that delivers hydraulic oil directly into mining machines, was built and tested. How It Works The Hydraulic Oil Delivery Module is carried, from the oil storage area to the equipment needing oil, in the bucket of a scoop or other utility vehicle. Oil is pumped into the module reservoir from storage, or out of the module reservoir into the machine being serviced, through a long hydraulic hose. During long-term testing, the 115 foot long delivery hose made it possible to replenish the hydraulic oil in mining machines at the face with only limited interruption to the mining operation. (Figure 1 shows one! version of the module.) The compact Hydraulic, Oil Delivery Module consists of: an oil reservoir: a pump driven by a hydraulic motor; two high pressure, low volume oil lines, filters; and a low pressure, larger capacity delivery hose equipped with quick-connect-couplers. The high pressure oil lines are connected to the scoop's hydraulic power takeoff, which supplies the power to pump oil in or out of the module reservoir.

6.1 Summary This report deals with the investigation carried out to select, test, and implement a method of evaluating coal deposits and reserves. Cognizance is taken of the inherent characteristics of coal and the legislation covering aspects of health, safety, environment, and ecology applicable to the coal mining industry. Further, the method is computerized and provides information that is meaningful and readily available to other programs and sub¬systems within the concept of the Master Design Simulator. The Geology and Reserves Sub-system interface with the total system is provided by a geological data library which is structured to hold and make accessible all the data required by the system. The output from the program is accurate and useful to users with a wide variety of computer experience, knowledge, hardware and storage capacity. The sub-system is designed to function as a separate unit or an integral part of the total system and, there¬fore, an interface to or with the system has been established. This paper deals with the second phase of an extensive research on coal-mine ventilation factors. A comprehensive report of the entire work is in course of preparation, but abstracts of the various chapters are being prepared in order to make the results public as rapidly as possible. Part 1 dealt with the resistance of unobstructed entries and was issued as Serial 2621 of the Bureau of Mines, in July 1924. Description of tests. After the resistance of an unobstructed entry to flow of air had been determined by tests in the Experiment mine, mine cars were; run into the test section in various arrangements and the increase in resistance was determined. The cars used were of the wooden type with loose end gate, and would hold about one ton of coal, level full. They were 7 feet long. 4 feet 2 inches wide above the wheels, 3 feet high, and had a cross-sectional area of approximately 10 square feet. The average area of the entry was about 57 square feet, the ratio of unobstructed to total area being about 17.6 per cent. The track gage was 42 inches and the wheel-base 20 inches.

In connection with tin strategic minerals investigations of the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey under authority of the Strategic Materials Act (Public 117, 76th Cong., 1st sess.) a study is being made of tin deposits in the United States in an effort to improve the situation with respect to domestic supplies. These studies include sampling and exploration of some of the larger deposits with the objective of establishing emergency reserves, if possible to do so. Two exploration projects have been completed, and the over-all results obtained are set forth in this progress report. RESOURCES Tin was first discovered on this continent in 100 in the Temescal Mountains of what is now southern California. In the ensuing century, occurrences of tin have been reported in no less than 17 States and Alaska. Although most of these are of scientific interest only, tin-bearing veins and placers in California, Alabama, North and South Carolina, Virginia, South Dakota, Wyoming, Texas, New Mexico, and Alaska have been extensively explored, and largo sums of money have been expended in recurring attempts to exploit them.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the operational characteristics of spliced portable power cables. This research had a dual purpose: (1) to determine the thermal and mechanical performance of repaired trailing cables and compare them with undamaged cables and (2) to gauge the impact of long-term, localized heating on the insulating and jacketing materials contained in cable splice kits accepted or approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. The ranges of splice joint resistance and tensile breaking strength were determined from laboratory measurements. The choice of crimping tools affected the strength of the splice under tension. Thermal profiles of energized spliced cables were constructed, which showed that spliced conductor joints operated 5 to 20°C hotter than the intact cable at rated currents. Accelerated life tests of thermally aged samples of splice kit insulation and jacket materials confirmed a deficiency in the thermal rating of the insulating tape. The recommendations in this report may be utilized to revise splice kit design, splice kit approval criteria, and trailing cable loading guidelines. Characterizing the thermal operating limits of spliced trailing cables may help to minimize the associated risks from explosions, fires, personnel burns, and shock.

3.1 Criteria for Selection A coal deposit has the following major characteristics: i) wide distribution as a flat-lying, thin, bedded deposit ii) stable nature of its major components and ranking characteristics such as carbon, heat content, volatile components, specific gravity, etc. iii) number of constituents and characteristics which under present regulations limit usage, such as content of ash, sulphur, sodium, etc. iv) effect of characteristics of over- and under- lying host rocks including porosity and permeability, lithology and general geology v) low value, high bulk nature. Because of the relative stability of its major components and its low unit price, coal does not require the same attention to detail as do the metal deposits. However, new regulations combined with social pressures make it imperative that more accurate information be made available concerning factors which affect the quality of coal and which may have an adverse effect on the environment when the coal is mined or burnt. The method selected for the evaluation of a coal deposit must, therefore, be flexible and sensitive enough to be used to interpolate stable parameters whose general distribution character-

To develop technology to help assure an ample domestic supply of zinc, the Bureau of Mines is investigating an aqueous chlorine-oxygen leaching process for treating complex sulfide concentrates. This report discusses the purification of aqueous C12-02 leaching solutions by utilizing zinc cementation to remove Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, and Pb. Additional processing of the purified solution is necessary to produce ZnC12 crystals suitable for molten-salt zinc electrowinning cells. The effects of solution temperature, reaction time, zinc dust concentration, ZnCl2 concentration, and degree of agitation on the removal of impurities were investigated for both simulated and actual leaching solutions. Zinc dust addition to a leaching solution at 30° C decreased the Cd, Cu, Ni, and Pb concentrations to acceptable levels of less than 3 mg/1 each. By increasing the solution temperature to 75° C, the cobalt content was decreased to less than 5 mg/l, an acceptable level for producing electrolytic cell-grade ZnC12. Impurity removal rates from ZnCl2 solutions are Pb>Cu=Cd>Ni>>Co. An increase in the solution temperature increases the rate of removal for these metal impurities.

"The accompanying tabulation gives the results of a series of operating tests on two types of small stokers. One was an inclined, natural-draft, moving-grate, overfeed ""hand-stoker"" fired and manipulated by hand; the other was. a horizontal, forced-draft, stationary-grate, underfeed, mechanical unit-stoker operated by an electric motor. These were installed as shown by the accompanying sketches (figs. 1 and 2) under horizontal return tubular boilers of a nominal rating of 150 bl.h.p. each.The steam load carried by these boilers was a rather typical heating load. It was fairly constant and of about 30 bl.h.p. throughout the summer months, with small variation between day and night. During the winter months the daily variations were dependent upon the outside temperature. The boilers were banked a considerable part of the night.As noted in the table, two kinds of coal were used. The size of one kind was run-of-mine and the other 11/4 inch nut and clack. These coals from two different mines of the New River district both caked considerably during burning, the nut and slack more than the other. Analyses of the coal were as follows:"

This paper , which describes the mining methods and costs at the Atwood copper mine in the Lordsburg ( Virginia ) Mining District of Hidalgo County , N. Mex . , is one of a series being prepared by the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines on mining practices , methods , and costs in various mining districts of the United States . The mine and surface plant are situated in the west half of sec . 7 , T. 23 S. , R. 18 W. , about 3 miles by road southwest of the center of Lordsburg , near the old abandoned townsite of Valedon ( see fig . 1 ) . The main line of the Southern Pacific Railroad passes through Lordsburg , as does the paved eastwest U. S. Highway 70-80 . A spur line of the Southern Pacific ends near the mine . A good graded road connects the mine with Lordsburg . The following pages present a brief history of the district , describe the geology , and outline methods of prospecting and exploration, including sampling and estimations of tonnages and values . Development, and mining methods are explained , and transportation , ventilation , drainage ,. safety measures , and organization are described . Kettlebottoms are columnar masses of rock--the preserved casts of ancient tree stumps--embedded in coal mine roof strata (of which they are a part). Because unsupported kettlebottoms can detach from a mine roof without warning, they are a hazard to miners. The primary objectives of this investigation were (1) to better define and describe kettlebottoms and (2) to evaluate kettlebottom support techniques in terms of safety and effectiveness. A telephone survey of mine operators, interviews with Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) personnel, and underground mine visits were conducted in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Information gathered during this investigation indicates that the size and frequency of kettlebottoms in mine roof are dependent upon past geologic events and biological processes active during the deposition of roof sediments. To ensure the safety of mine personnel, all undermined kettlebottoms should be supported. The roof should be bolted next to kettlebottoms less than 3 ft in diameter, close enough to allow a portion of a wood or steel header to be extended beneath each kettlebottom for support. Two bolts and a wood plank or steel strap should be employed to support kettlebottoms over 3 ft in diameter.

"INTRODUCTION In carbothermic processes for the production of magnesium, magnesium oxide is reduced by carbon according to the following equation:(1) MgO + C = Mg(g) + CO.The reaction is virtually complete at temperatures above 2,000° C. but reverses rapidly at somewhat lower temperatures. To produce magnesium by this reaction, therefore, it is necessary to cool the gas very rapidly to a temperature at which the rate of the reverse reaction becomes negligible. Several media for quenching the gas have been proposed, among which are hydrogen, natural gas, liquid hydrocarbons, and molten metals of low melting point.The results of a preliminary investigation on the use of molten lead as the quenching medium are summarized in this report. The work was done in 1941, when the threat of war made it imperative to investigate every process that offered possibilities for rapid expansion of domestic production of magnesium. Although the results were encouraging, other processes appeared to offer better prospects for immediate wartime development, so the work was not continued. Shortly before the investigation was completed, several patents on the use of low-melting metals for absorption of magnesium vapors appeared, 4/"

NIOSH has developed an automated PC-based seismic monitoring system for use in mine ground control studies. The distribution and coordination of data acquisition and processing functions across a local area network (LAN) is a central feature of the system. Design requirements include (1) the use of lowcost, off-the-shelf, data acquisition and computer hardware, (2) the capability of automatically merging waveform data sets from different types of monitoring systems, (3) delivery of raw and processed data underground and on the surface, as well as to remote sites, and (4) automated data collection and processing over long periods of time without the need for human intervention. Current mine-wide installations utilize multiple, autonomous seismic networks located both underground and on the surface and provide 20 to 40 stations within a radius of several kilometers. Event locations, magnitude estimates, and other processed data are distributed for display and analysis on network nodes both underground and in the offices of mine engineers and managers. This paper describes the system&apos;s hardware and software components, examples of installations in hard-rock and coal mines, and a few observations from western U.S. longwall coal mines.
