The Bureau of Mines has conducted research to determine whether the total elapsed delay time for blasting bituminous coal in underground mines could be safely expanded beyond the present 500-ms limitation without igniting a methane or methane-coal dust atmosphere. The results indicated that the increase of total delay from 500 to 1,000 ms had no detectable effect on safety relative to incendivity as long as permissible practices were observed in all other aspects. Research was also conducted to evaluate the safety of 18-in hole spacing for delay blasting in coal relative to misfires. For a variety of permissible explosives, misfires were observed for about 50 pct of the holes at 18-in spacing. Based on this observation, the Bureau has recommended that the new regulations prohibit hole spacings of less than 24 inches in underground coal mines. Misfires were also observed for 24-in spacing, but the number of misfires and test shots was too small to sup- port any firm conclusions.

This paper, which describes mining methods and costs at the Kearney zinc-lead mine, is one of a series being prepared by the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in varicus mining districts of the United States. The Kearney mine, which is owned by the New Mexico Consolidated Mining Co., a subsidiary of the Peru Mining Co. (Illinois Zinc), is situated a few miles southeast of the town of Hanover, in the northwest corner of sec. 27, T. 17 S., R. 12 W., in the Central Mining District, Grant County, N. Mex. (Figs. 1 and 2.) This report presents a brief history of the district, describes the geology, and outlines methods of prospecting and exploration, including eampling and estimation of tonnages and values. Development and mining methods are explained, and transportation, ventilation, drainage, safety measures, and organizatich are described. The wage scale and mining costs comprise the concluding sections of the report.

The Anson Bette manganese mine, with two prominent manganese-bearing outcrops in schist, has attracted considerable attention for its variety of manganese minerals and its possibilities as a potential source of manganese. Little mining was done prior to 1925, when the present owner acquired the property, and operations since that date have been intermittent. Mine workings are open cuts with a maximum depth of 35 feet. The two outcropping ore deposits are irregular, pipelike bodies about 500 feet apart. As nothing was known of the grade or extent of mineralization in depth, four holes totaling 1,072.5 feet of bore Were diamond-drilled by the Bureau of Mines in the summer of 1943, with the results shown in figures 3 to 6. In.1945 a geophysical survey was run to map the magnetic anomalies in the manganese-bearing belt as a means of determining the locations of manganese deposits. Positive correlation of magnetite and manganese ore was not obtained.

The Idol zinc prospect, formerly known as the Comstock, was examined by Harold B. Ewoldt, a Bureau of Mines' engineer, accompanied by Deane F. Kent of the United States Geological Survey on July 22, 1943. Previous to that time, the Geological Survey had contoured and studied the area. As a part of the war minerals program, further investigation of the area was recommended. The Dalton property, a mile and a half northeast of the Idol property, was examined during the progress of the work at the Idol, and it was decided to include this property also in the project. From February 7, 1944, to May 16, 1944, six holes totaling 2,739 feet were diamond-drilled on the Idol property and eight holes totaling 1,850 feet were diamond-drilled, and three pits channel sampled on the Dalton property. The drilling showed sphalerite to be sparsely distributed through a 100 foot thickness of the Kingsport member of the Knox dolomite.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the occurrence of slickensides in mine roof in the Pittsburgh coalbed in a portion of the Valley Camp No.3 mine in southwestern Pennsylvania to improve the potential for prediction of slicken-sided zones and determine the orientations of the most prominent slickensided planes. Two distinct types of slickensides were identified; those which were associated with clay veins observed in the coalbed (genetic), and those which were unrelated to any visible structure (nongenetic). The study draws three conclusions: (1) Nongenetic slickensides are not the result of tectonic forces, (2) both genetic and nongenetic slickensides tend to dip at an angle of 30°, and (3) genetic slickensides tend to be alined parallel to the trend of the clay vein and usually dip toward the center of the clay vein. A schematic roof bolting plan is presented that may provide improved roof support where slickensides are present. Roof stability could be improved by supplemental bolting in the direction normal to the plane of slickensides.

U.S. Bureau of Mines investigation; identified no mineral resources or evidence of mining activity in the Sheep Divide RARE II area. A deposit 10 mi (16 km) southwest of the area contains copper and silver minerals in the Triassic Wild Sheep Creek Formation which probably underlies basalt lava flows covering the study area. Abundant basalt in the area can be crushed and used as aggregate, but suitable deposits closer to markets are widely available No sand, gravel, coal, oil, gas, or geothermal resource, were Identified. INTRODUCTION Location and Access The Sheep Divide RARE II area [10 mi (16 km) west of the Snake River] encompasses 7,100 acres (2,800 ha) of the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. Enterprise, Oregon, is located 23 air mi (37 (m) west of the area. Peripheral access is provided by the highway from Joseph to the community of Imnaha, Oregon, then south to the study area by the graveled Upper Imnaha Road (fig. 1).

The Bureau of Mines investigated fumes generated by selected welding materials used in mines in order to help determine their relative hazard potential. The initial phases of the study have been completed. A welding-fume generation and collection apparatus was designed, assembled, and calibrated. Five brands of coated, AWS-type E308-16 stainless steel electrodes were tested. Total fume generation rates of 0.39 to 0.51 g/min were measured. Quantitative chemical analyses were conducted for all of the principal firms constituents. Two analytical schemes were used to determine levels of the Cr6+ and Cr3+ species contained in the welding fumes; comparable results were obtained. The Cr6+ was found to be the most hazardous constituent, leading to a maximum allowable total fume exposure of 1 mg/m3. Fume generation rates and fume constituent analyses will be derived for other groups of welding electrodes using similar procedures.

The heats of solution of erbium chloride in water and in hydrochloric acid and of erbium oxide in hydrochloric acid were determined. The results reveal a discrepancy of 10.5 kcal. per gram-atom between the heats of combustion and solution of erbium reported in the literature, the heat of combustion being more negative. The heat of combustion of erbium t4)4 and its heat of solution in hydrochloric acid (1, 18) have been reported in the literature. The heat of solution of erbium chloride was determined in two studies (2, 19). The present work was undertaken to check the reported heats of solution of erbium chloride and to determine the heat of solution of erbium oxide in hydrochloric acid. The latter quantity permits the heats of combustion and solution of erbium to be compared for mutual consistency. It was also desired to determine the degree of similarity between the thermochemistry of yttrium and erbium.

Operating engineers and mining executives are interested in the science of applied geophysics, but are looking for a simple and understandable exposition of its problems, instead of dissertations which are becoming more and more involved and increasingly difficult to comprehend. It may be well to discuss the goal, the attempted methods of reaching it and the psychological motive, if any, tack of the science. Where does the subject of applied geophysics stand from the viewpoint of (1) the physicist, (2) the mathematician, and (3) the geologist? Fundamentally, the science aims at a differentiation of subterranean geology with the object of finding useful mineral products by the study of gravitational, magnetic, seismic, electric, and other fields which may be associated with the materials naturally or which may be applied to them. The more skillfully these fields are recognized, applied, and analyzed the greater will be the possibility of interpreting results in a way that will be remunerative both economically and scientifically.

Through 1986, Kentucky was the nation's largest coal producer. Currently it ranks third in production, behind Wyoming and West Virginia. Because of the size and variety of Kentucky's coal industry, virtually every kind of surface coal mining and reclamation activity takes place in the state. Extensive coal deposits occur in two separate areas: the eastern coal field, which is part of the Appalachian coal field, and the western coal field. Kentucky's reserves are estimated at 65 billion tons, with 27 billion tons in eastern Kentucky and 38 billion tons in western Kentucky. Kentucky coal is high in volatile matter, low in sulfur and ash, and relatively high in heating value. Coal from Kentucky's eastern coal fields contains a sulfur content of less than 1 percent. Conditional primacy was granted to Kentucky May 18,1982. Since then, all conditions have been removed; final regulatory approval was granted on May 30,1985. The Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved with the regulatory program May 18, 1982.

Hydraulic cylinders a re used in several roof support systems, such as longwall shields and mobile roof supports, to provide critical ground control Many state-of-the-art hydraulic support systems operate at pressures as high as 7,000 psi to provide the necessary support capacities. Pressure in the upper stages of multi-stage cylinders can be intensified by a factor of 2 or 3 providing pressures of 20,000 psi or greater. A proper understanding of the operation of these high pressure systems is necessary to safely maintain and repair these support systems. Likewise, the performance characteristics need to be fully understood to evaluate the impact of design parameters on the capability of the support to maintain effective ground control. This paper examines the basic operating principles of state-of-the-art hydraulic cylinders and discusses relative issues pertaining to. (1) setting loads, (2) support stiffness, (3) yielding behavior, (4) errors in assessing support loading, and (S) hydraulic failure mechanisms and how to detect them

The Bureau of Mines investigated coal-mine-type short-delay electric detonators marketed by three domestic manufacturers to determine the accuracy of delays and the probability of overlap between adjacent de- lay periods. The Winzer index was computed and compared with the probability of overlap. A close agreement between the Winzer criterion and overlap probability was demonstrated. A permissible blasting unit capable of delivering a maximum firing energy of 4.0 J and a digital oscilloscope were used to measure the delay time with an accuracy of 20.25 ms. Another oscilloscope and a pulse transformer were used to record firing current. Experimental data indicated negligible overlap probability in detonators of shorter delay periods: periods 1 to 4, which correspond to 25 to 250 ms. However, a significant probability of overlap was detected in some detonators of longer delay periods: periods 5 to 9, which cor- respond to 300 to 500 ms.

Table XXXIII itemizes the cost associated with the installation of an irrigation system and the application of latex and water in the three experimental areas at Lanse. There were no external labor charges (non- Research Center) except for the installation of the water meter. Cost of pipe and fitting are high because long lines were required at each of the three different locations; these costs were minimized by using plastic instead of metal pipe. Fifteen of the seventeen drums of latex received were used, five drums for each area. [ ] In tank-car lots latex would cost about $0.25/lb so that raw material cost for a 4000 lb/acre application would be in the range of $1,000 per acre. Equipment costs for setting up and irrigation are sensitive to size of area to be irrigated, design of system, and availability and cost of water. A realistic range is estimated to be between $200-500/acre.

The process of drilling and bolting the roof is currently one of the most dangerous jobs in underground mining, resulting in about 1,000 accidents with injuries each year in the United States. Researchers from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are studying the use of a drill monitoring system to estimate the strength of successive layers of rock and assess the integrity of a mine roof so that roof drill operators can be warned when a weak layer is being drilled. Measurements taken during drilling can be converted to suitably scaled features so that a neural network can classify mine roof strata in terms of relative strength. The feasibility of this concept has been demonstrated in the laboratory. The research project was undertaken in order to increase the safety of underground miners, especially those involved in roof bolting. The system should be applicable to the mobile drills used in underground mining and would likely find wider application as well.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, cooperated with Tecrete Industries Pty. Ltd. and BHP Australia Coal in a research program to evaluate the strength characteristics and air leakage of four seal and two stopping designs for use in underground coal mines. A fundamental safety research area for NIOSH is to eliminate the occurrence of coal mine explosions or to mitigate their effects. One approach to achieve this goal is to develop new and innovative seal designs that provide increased explosion isolation protection for the mining personnel against ignitions that originate from within the gob or. other worked-out areas of the mine Full-scale seals and stoppings were constructed in the Experimental Mine at Lake Lynn Laboratory near Fairchance, Fayette County, PA. They were ail--leakage tested, then subjected to a series of explosions with average pressure pulses ranging from 25 to 500 kPa (3.5 to 72 psi). Instrumentation measured seal displacement and acceleration as a function of time, providing data to assist in the development of numerical models 1'01- future seal design. All three seals designed with Meshblock wire forlnwo~-k ant1 a lnonolithic shotcrete core withstood the first explosion test, which generated an avcr-age rnaximu~n pressure of - 140 kPa (-20 psi) while maintaining acceptable air leakage rates. These seals I-anged from 175 to 325 mm thick. They included a 2.7-m-high by 325-mm-thick seal that was tesled 27 hr after completion against this - 140-kPa explosion pressure, a special requirement of the test program. This seal survived explosions with pressure pulses up to 300 kPa (43 psi). The 2.3-m-high by 325-mm-thick Meshblock seal survived three explosion tests with overpressures up to 455 kPa (66 psi) and satisfied the air leakage criteria. A I ,200-mm-thick plug seal was constructed of two Gunmesh formwork walls in-filled with shotcrete and a 3,450-kPa (500-psi) strength Aquablend core. This plug seal survived three explosions with pressure pulses ranging 11-om 150 lo 430 kPa (-22 to 62.5 psi) with no measurable postexplosion air leakage. Two Gunmesh stoppings with thicknesses 01' 40 and 75 inln withstood explosion overpressures of 23 and 115 kPa, respectively. Anchoring all seal and stopping designs into the roof, ribs, and floor with steel "rootbolts" provided very effective boundary constraint that is critical to the performanceofstructures subject to explosion overpressures.

This paper describes mining and milling practices at the San Xavier mine of the Eagle- Picher Mining & Smelting Co. in Pima County , Ariz . It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods in various mining districts of the United States . The mine and the mine surface buildings are situated in sec . 11 , T. 17 S. , R. 12 E. , in the Sierrita Mountains in Pima County , 20 miles south by southwest from Tucson via the San Xavier Mission and Twin Buttes road ( fig . 1). A well-maintained dirt road continues southward toward Twin Buttes for 4 miles and then branches off northeasterly for 5-1/2 miles to Sahuarita , where the concentrator of the Eagle - Picher Mining & Smelting Co. is situated on the west slope of the Santa Cruz River Valley . Tho mill is connected by a railroad branch to the main line of the Southorn Pacific Railroad between Tucson and Nogales . It is generally assumed that the San Xavier silver - lead deposits became known to the Jesuits and Spaniards in the early part of the eighteenth century . However , no extensive mining operations were conducted by the Jesuits in what is now Arizona before the middle of the eighteenth century . The completion of the Southern Pacific Railroad from Los Angeles to El Paso in 1881 marked the beginning of intense activity in mining throughout the southern part of the State . The San Xavier mine produced 6,000,000 pounds of lead , considerable zinc ( exact figures not available ) and $200,000 in silver from 1897 to 1918 . The Eagle- Picher Mining & Smolting Co. re- opened the San Xavier mine in 1943 and built a 175-ton concentrator at Sahuarita . The capacity of the plant was increased in 1944 to 500 tons in order to take in custom ore . The surface rocks at the San Xavier mine are , in great part , of sedimentary origin . Limestones of various ages comprise most of the exposed sedimentaries , some quartzites and shales also being present . The sedimentaries rest upon coarse - textured , intrusive , igneous rocks comprised mainly of granite and granodiorite . The San Xavier deposit is composed of galena , sphalerite , chalcopyrite , and pyrite . Generally the individual ore bodies are small , discontinuous , and occur as irregularly spaced shoots or lenses . The present mine workings extend horizontally a distance of 2,700 feet and vertically 900 feet . Owing to ground weight, all mine openings are timbered on the levels and all stopes are square- setted and waste -filled .

Reaching movements are planned and subsequently executed [1] using visual and somatosensory feedbacks [2], where absence of visual feedback is known to increase endpoint variability [3]. Visual occlusion decreases the ability to make rapid online compensatory movements, which results in initial radial deviations that are highly correlated with radial dispersion at the target. Perturbations of rapid, visually-guided reaches are compensated on-line and result in endpoint dispersions poorly correlated with initial deviations, emphasizing the strong effect of visual feedback in temporally-constrained reaching tasks. In control conditions (no vibration), these uncompensated, rapid reaches serve as estimates of the individual’s intended trajectory. When ride motion is present, trajectories of rapid, visually-occluded reaches provide a measure of the natural biodynamic response of the cantilevered spine-arm-hand linkage. These intended movement trajectories and the biodynamic response (vibration feedthrough) are used to predict the effect of ride motion on the performance of rapid reaching tasks. Goals of this study are to investigate the influences of vehicle motion on human reaching and pointing, and to reveal movement strategies used in visually-occluded reaching tasks. Methods A six degree of freedom human-rated Ride Motion Simulator (RMS) was used to generate a dynamic vehicle environment. Participants performed discrete, rapid pointing tasks to targets presented on three touchpanel displays under stationary and random whole-body vibration. Reach instructions included successfully reaching identical circular targets (Ø = 0.25”) with the right index fingertip as fast as possible. Targets were presented on resistive-touch displays mounted approximately 60 cm from the participant’s nasion. The touchpanel displays were located in the forward and lateral directions at eye level, and forward at 45° of elevation. These displays measured the spatial error of the reach destination. A ten-camera VICON motion capture system recorded the upper body kinematics of the participant. Reflective markers were placed on the participant’s torso, head, and arms. Initial kinematics of the fingertip (i.e. time and magnitude peak tangential velocity) and tangential velocity at target were used to estimate the planned endpoint of the reach. Results and Discussion Ride motion resulted in increased endpoint variability compared to reaches performed in the stationary condition. Reaches to the elevated touchpanel consistently resulted in the largest variability across all motion conditions, suggesting that a vehicle occupant would not be capable of accurately activating a control in that location. Principal axes of endpoint ellipses were along and perpendicular to the direction of fingertip movements. In 1938 , the Bureau of Mines cooperated with Subcommittee XV on Plasticity and Swelling of Coal ( C. C. Russell , chairman ) , of Committee D-5 on Coal and Coke , A.S.T.M. , by testing various methods for determining expansion and plastic properties of a series of coals of widely different coking properties . One of the tests made by the Bureau was the British Standard Method for the Crucible Swelling Test for Coal.5/ Briefly , this swelling test consists in heating 1 gram of pulverized coal in a silica crucible over a gas flame under prescribed conditions to form a coke button which is compared in size and shape with a series of standard profiles numbered 1 to 9. These profiles are intended to cover the size and shape of buttons obtained from coals covering a wide range in plastic properties .. The number of the standard profile with which the maximum cross -sectional area of the button most nearly corresponds is recorded as the swelling index . Although the swelling test showed poor relationships with the various tests that were used for measuring expansion or contraction of coal during carbonization , it gave indications of having value in measuring free - swelling and caking properties of coals when burned on fuel beds . An opportunity to investigate this occurred when an engineer of an eastern public utility 'company reported pronounced differences in burning characteristics on grates of various shipments of Pocahontas coal . Some of these coals gave trouble by swelling 'excessively and clogging the grates . Samples were ob- · tained , and it was found that the troublesome coals gave decidedly higher free -swelling numbers than did the coals that performed satisfactorily . Also , it was found that the free - swelling index test gave better differentiation between coals than could be obtained from the coke buttons from the · ´`standard volatile -matter test or from agglutinating - value results . The results of the free - swelling tests were considered by the Subcommittee on Plasticity and Swelling , and a special group of the subcommittee , under the chairmanship of R. A. Sherman , was delegated to study the test method . Ostborg , Limbacher , and Sherman , ofthe Battelle Memorial Institute , ' investigated the various factors affecting the test and found that the swelling index was a good indication of the suitability of coal for performance on residential -type stokers from the standpoint of the coking characteristics of the coal . Data were presented also showing that the indexes wer helpful in the selection of coal for industrial underfeed stokers .

6. Development of Mine Sealant Material Systems 6. 1 Introduction The preliminary evaluation of material systems described in Section 3 led to the selection of the following four promising systems for further development: System A: Aggregate, Fly Ash System System B: Aggregate, Fly Ash, Urethane Foam System System C: Aggregate, Bulkhead, Light Expansive Concrete System D: Aggregate, Self-Supporting Thick Slurry Preliminary laboratory tests indicated that the building of effective bulkheads from one borehole would be extremely difficult. Two extra boreholes would be required adding to the overall cost of the system and making the system less attractive. Tests with light expansive concrete showed that bulkheads would be required, the material would not support itself. As a result, further development of this system was terminated. Foam concrete was selected as the most suitable material to be developed into a self-supporting, rapid-setting slurry. A laboratory investigation of its use for mine sealing was conducted during this program; the results are summarized in Section 6. 5 and details of the laboratory program are presented in Appendix B.

In 1972, the Bureau of Mines developed a direct-method test for measuring the gas content of virgin coal core samples for coal mine health and safety considerations. Since that time, approximately 1,500 coal samples from more than 250 coalbeds in 17 States have been collected for gas content determination. The gas content data, when combined with geologic and engineering studies, can be used as a basis for a preliminary estimate of mine ventilation requirements, and to determine if methane drainage in advance of mining should be considered. The data are also critical in delineating coalbed methane resources and in utilization feasibility studies. This report makes the Bureau's extensive data base of gas content data more readily available to the coal and gas industries. The data are presented in tabular form, alphabetically by coalbed name and by State. The components of the total gas content (lost, desorbed, and residual gas) are given, Location (State and county), sample depth, coalbed or formation name, and coal rank are included for geographic and geologic identification.
