"Among other components, ore body „T“ was discovered in the Bor pit copper mine at a depth of app. 500m. The ore body is relatively small: 60-65m long, 40-45m wide and up to 50m high, but with an extremely high content of copper and accompanying metals. The rock mass containing the ore body is composed of altered andesite of relatively poor physical-mechanical characteristics. The exploitation of this ore body by way of conventional mining methods was associated with high risk, cost, and potential losses of the rich ore. Due to everything specified hereinbefore, the adopted solution involved ore exploitation with complete ensuring of excavation stability, thus forming an extremely large underground opening. The excavation and supporting were performed according to the NATM principles along with applying shotcrete, 9-25 m long cables, and horizontal and vertical lattice girders. The excavation of the ore body was completed in app. 2.5 years, all the while ensuring complete stability and security of people and equipment; construction works were constantly monitored. The proposed solution for ore excavation enabled more than 95% exploitation of ore as requested by the Investor, while depletion due to waste-rock excavation was less than the allowed 5%. INTRODUCTIONThe Bor copper deposit is located in Eastern Serbia. Copper exploitation in Bor commenced as far back as 1902. A total of 26 ore bodies varying in size and valuable mineral content have been excavated so far. One of the most recent excavated ore bodies is ore body „T“, which is one of the smallest bodies by volume, but also a body with one of the largest content of copper and accompanying metals. An important fact regarding its exploitation is that it is located at a depth of app. 500 m; that its shape is irregular: 60-65 m long; 40-45 m wide and app. 50 m high; and that it lays within a rock mass of relatively poor physical-mechanical characteristics. In addition, above it, in its immediate vicinity, ore body „F“ was previously excavated and its room was refilled with backfill and water. Excavation methods common in mining practice (excavation with caving, excavation with backfilling, excavation with protective pillars) were inadequate in this case for various reasons:• The immediate vicinity of the previous ore body „F“ room could cause expansion of the caving zone also to that room, along with penetration of groundwater and flotation sludge;• Possibility of deformation expansion caused by caving as far up as the surface of the terrain, including the urban area;• Difficulties in maintaining the stability of excavation sidewalls having steep slopes and great height;• Significant loss of ore mass with a relatively high content of metals etc."

Fine powders, with the bulk of the particle diameters Jess than 10 microns, were aerated so that each particle was, on the average, separated from its neighbours by 1.3 to 2 mean diameters. In this state, measurements were made of the viscosity and settling rate of the powder, and the interfacial tension between it and a moist pellet. From the viscosity measurements, qualitative analogies are drawn between the behaviour of the aerated powder and that of a dense gas near its critical point.

"AbstractLoad-haul-dump machines equipped with. a torque converter and hydraulic pumps have been field tested by means of an engine monitoring instrumentation package. It was found that owing to parasitic losses in the ancillaries and drivetrain, maximum available useable pourer may peak at less than full engine speed. Simple reduction of engine speed may save 15 to 25 percent on fuel consumption, with no significant loss of available power. On some machines, speed reduction will require modification of the torque converter . The cost of this modification, when necessary , would be offset by reductions in exhaust emissions, ventilation requirements, fuel consumption , heat, noise and hydraulic system maintenance, and by increased life of rotating components and filters and machine availability.IntroductionTHE CANADIAN EXPLOSIVES ATMOSPHERES LABORATORY, in conjunction with Deutz Canada Limited, has designed, constructed and field tested a portable instrumentation package. This package monitors diesel engine performance in underground mining machinery by continuously recording engine speed and volumetric fuel delivery. During tests designed to determine the engine load and speed conditions for the various segments which constitute actual underground operation of a Deutz F6L 714-powered 4-yard load-haul-dump machine, it was discovered that an unexpectedly large percentage of the engine power was required to overcome the ancillaries and drivetrain drag (1). That this large component of engine power is functionally related to engine speed rather than the operator's needs was verified by repeat tests of the used 4-yard machine and by testing of a new 5-yard machine powered by a Deutz F 8L 714."

IN the fall of 1929, a paper was presented at the Annual Western Meeting of the Institute entitled The Fuel Research Laboratories at Ottawa and the Scope of Their Investigations. At that time, the equipment of the laboratories had not been completely installed, but the regular routine work was being carried on as usual, and several large-scale investigations were being conducted. It is now five years since that paper was presented, and it seems fitting that a brief description of the investigations which have been undertaken, together with results-especially those which have reference to western Canadian fuels-be presented at this Annual Western Meeting. The coal mining industry of western Canada has, within the past few years, suffered many unfortunate vicissitudes. The replacement of coals by oil, for bunkering ships, for operating railway locomotives, and for heating, has weighed heavily on the coal mining industry of British Columbia and Alberta generally, but more particularly in the Crowsnest Pass area and Vancouver-and hydro-electric developments have also left their impress. With a full appreciation of these conditions, the Department of Mines planned research and large-scale investigations which it was considered would be of the greatest benefit to the coal industry, and the results have amply justified the plans and anticipations. The fact, however, must not be lost sight of, that the application of the findings of certain of these investigations would not have been feasible had not the Federal Government assisted the transportation of coal by the application of railway subventions. These subventions permitted Canadian coals to compete at competitive points with United States coals, and it must be admitted also in this connection that certain of the collieries which have benefitted, both as a result of the railway subventions and the investigations conducted by the Fuel Research Laboratories of the Department of Mines, made special efforts to produce a coal which was capable of competing with the American product, by special preparation at the mines.

"Nuclear explosions are currently being planned for use in oil and gas production, the recovery of oil from oil shale, gas storage and copper leaching. The current status of each of these projects is discussed, with emphasis on the economics of each application. The first commercial application of nuclear explosives will be in gas stimulation. Project Gasbuggy will be rapidly followed by two additional shots, also related to gas production. These three events, each in a different formation, will be described in this paper with a discussion on their significance to the world's oil and gas industry. The use of nuclear explosives in oil and gas stimulation should be a standard accepted practice within a few years. Calculations based on explosions in media such as tuff, alluvium, granite and dolomite predict large increases in productivity when nuclear devices are used in tight, thick formations. The broken-up rock resulting from the explosion becomes the new well bore, with a production rate of six to twelve times that of a normally completed well.Also included in the paper is a discussion of the real or possible problems associated with nuclear explosive engineering. The only major foreseeable problem is the seismic shock wave. This limits the size of explosive which can be used near important surface structures. A discussion is included on the radiation problem, which we believe to be largely psychological in the case of contained explosions."

Present conventional techniques for primary steelmaking in both integrated and non-integrated plants are outlined. 'Direct reduction' alternatives are reviewed and categorized according to the nature of the product produced, with particular emphasis on the limited number designed to yield steel as the end product. A proposed new technique, referred to as the Sherwood Process, is described in some detail as a new combination of selected features from the prior technology. This process is in-tended to realize, in integrated operations, the result of continuons steelmaking directly from the ore in a single plant and, in non-integrated operations, continuons steel-making from a metallic charge of scrap, sponge iron or pig iron. Prominent features are continuons processing in elongated, horizontal, rotary furnace equipment, controlled direct heating of each process stage and, for the over-all integrated process, a size separation for removal of excess solid reductant and other waste just prior to the melting step. Material and energy balances are presented as well as exemplary cost data. Reasons for selecting this particular combination of process elements are dis-cussed.

Medium and low carbon steels, modified with uranium, were studied in order to evaluate the influence of uranium on forge ability, mechanical 11roperties, response to heat treatment and microstructure. Uranium contents ranged up to 0.70 per cent. The medium carbon steels are hot short if the uranium content exceeds about 0.35 per cent. More uranium can be tolerated in low carbon steels. The hot shortness is caused by the formation of intergranular phase UFe2. Critical transformation temperatures, Jominy hardenability, and resistance to tempering are not significantly affected by the 11resence of uranium. Similarly, uranium has little or no effect on the tensile properties of carbon steels. The addition of uranium has a favourable effect 11n the stress-rupture characteristics and some beneficial effect on fatigue properties. However, more results are required for verification. In the steels investigated, it seems that most of the uranium carbide combines to form complex inclusions of U (0, C, N) or (C, N), rich in oxygen or nitrogen or both.

"The Sturgeon Lake deposit, a partly eroded lens of massive sulphides with an underlying sulphide stringer zone, is one of five orebodies that occur in the Sturgeon Lake area of northwestern Ontario within volcaniclastic rocks of the Archean Wabigoon Subprovince in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield.The Sturgeon Lake Cu-Zn-Pb-A g-Au deposit was discovered in October 1970 as a result of an I.P. survey. Production from this open-pit mine began in March 1974 and continued until the ore was exhausted in March 1980.The Sturgeon Lake property is underlain by basaltic volcanics, minor amounts of mafic lapilli tuff and rhyolite volcaniclastics. A quartz crystal-bearing rhyolite occurs at the top of the felsic volcaniclastics and is ""capped"" by the Sturgeon Lake massive sulphide deposit. The felsic volcanics have been intruded by a crudely layered sill-like, carbonatized mafic intrusion. Recent work suggests that the felsic rocks that underlie the Sturgeon Lake deposit are lateral equivalents of those in the vicinity of the Mattabi Mine and are not correlative with the dacitic volcaniclastics that underlie the Lyon Lake and Creek Zone deposits. Hydrothermal processes that resulted in the formation of the Sturgeon Lake orebody have resulted in a depletion of Na2O, CaO and FeO and an increase in MgO, K2O, copper and zinc. In the vicinity of the sulphide stringer zone, the rhyolites are ""bleached"" due to silicification and sericitization. The rocks lying immediately below the massive sulphides are locally strongly chloritic.The Sturgeon Lake deposit may have formed on a top ographic high which prevented mafic flows and dacitic volcaniclastics that underlie the Lyon Lake and Creek Zone deposits from inundating the Sturgeon Lake fumarolic vent from the west. Continued or resurgent activity from the Sturgeon Lake fumarole may have resulted in the formation of the Lyon Lake and Creek Zones as more ""distal "" deposits in topographic lows. The Sturgeon Lake, Lyon Lake and Creek Zone deposits were subsequently overlain by mafic tuffs and flows."

"In order to establish some links between the 22 specimens found on the site of Les Forges du St. Maurice, their slag inclusions have been analyzed by electron microprobe. Comparison between their contents of various specific oxides allowed us to segregate them into two major groups and even to isolate two sub-groups possibly characterized by some equilibrium between their oxides and/or the type of ores used.In all probability, limes/one coupled systematically with a soil rich in hydrated aluminum silicates was used as a flux.Based upon the existence of a pseudo equilibrium between the slag and the metal, the elaboration of the bulk of the specimens can be ascribed to the indirect rather than the direct method whereas the process temperature can be estimated at at least /400°C.RESUMEDans le but d'etablir des liens entre les 22 objects provenant des Forges du St-Maurice, leurs inclusions de scories ont été analysées par microsonde. "To satisfy their continuing need to replenish or expand their ore reserves, mining companies are faced with the dilemma of arriving at a proper balance between the dual avenues of discovery through in-house exploration and of acquisition of properties that are relatively proven or are even in production. The returns from exploration activities may be spectacular, but are unpredictable. The allure of an acquisition lies in its promise of quick and risk-reduced addition to reserves. However, it is historically clear that quantum increments in shareholders’ values have arisen primarily through major exploration discoveries, rather than through major late-stage acquisitions. Late-stage acquisitions can prove highly profitable, sometimes based upon the planned use of superior mining or metallurgical technology, but more often occur as the result of unexpected windfalls. At the other extreme, they can become expensive failures through inadequate due diligence, or unforeseeable factors.Citing numerous case histories and industry statistics, it is concluded that a judicious combination of both exploration activity and the acquisition of prospects is the most advantageous strategy for adding new ore reserves. A skilled exploration staff is essential for success, be it through exploration discoveries or through opportunistic acquisitions, preferably at their early stages. In the future, it is anticipated that there will be fewer opportunities for acquisition because of reduced funding for junior exploration companies, leading to increased competition and higher costs for fewer properties, both in the advanced exploration and mining stages."

"Bauxite has been the almost universal ore of aluminum for about 100 years, with most of the world's reserves oc¬curring in the developing countries. As a result of fiscal and political activities prompted in part by the energy crisis, the formation of the IBA combined with increasing freight and labour costs, these reserves are no longer as competitive or as secure as they once were. This has given fresh impetus to the development of processes for alumina production that utilize raw material other than bauxite. Canada has no bauxite and it is prudent to look for alter¬native raw materials within our own boundaries suitable for one of these processes.Of the three igneous rocks that have been used as a source of alumina, only anorthosite is considered as a potential source in Canada. The Al content would be extracted by a sinter process, which currently requires a raw material with a. minimum of 28% Al2O2. Thus, about 4 tons of anorthosite and 10 to 12 tons of limestone are needed to produce one ton of alumina. There are two petrologically distinct types of anorthosite, one containing the plagioclase andesine-labradorite and around 26% Al2O3, and the other containing upwards of 30% Al2O3, in by¬townite-anorthite; for our purposes they may be con¬sidered as low- and high-alumina anorthosite respectively. The high-alumina anorthosites are somewhat rare; the low-alumina anorthosites are much more common, partic¬ularly in Eastern Canada. Geologically speaking, there is no shortage of anorthosite in Canada. The reserves are im¬mense, although their low Al2O3 content coupled with con¬siderations of location, access and proximity to limestone could be constraints to their development. Fly ash from coal-fired thermal power stations and nepheline syenite can also be used in a sinter process, but neither is likely to be utilized in Canada in the immediate future.The H+ process utilizes an acid attack to leach Al from a raw material with at least 20% Al2O3. One of the best raw materials is kaolinite-bearing clay; not only is it high in Al, but most of it can be extracted. With the possible exception of the Whitemud clay in Saskatchewan, Canada is apparently deficient in clays with sufficient reserves to support an alumina plant utilizing the H+ process. Low-alumina clays with illite and montmorillonite may also prove to be a suitable raw material if advantageously sited with respect to industrial centers. The average shale con¬tains only 15% Al2O33, much of which may be contained in minerals, such as feldspar, not amenable to acid leaching. If shale is used as a source of alumina, it will be because it contains some other valuable commodity, such as oil or uranium, the extraction of which leaves the spent shale upgraded in extractable Al2O3 and lowers the over-all costs to a point where it is economic, Thus, rejects from coal washing plants are most commonly considered as a source of alumina; they are already mined, are available in large and ever increasing amounts, and may contain significant amounts of combustible material which upgrades the Al2O3, content of the resulting ash. Coal rejects from existing and developing coalfields in Alberta and British Columbia are a possible source of raw material, but present data indicate they may contain insufficient Al2O3."

The Sullivan Mining Group has been exploring the mineral deposits of the Mount Pleasant area of southern New Brunswick since 1967. Sullivan geologists have logged over sixty miles of drill core, mapped over five miles of underground workings and studied numerous surface exposures. Several mineralized zones have been defined and two higher-grade porphyrytungsten bodies delineated. Within these bodies, wolframite occurs as disseminated specks and grains up to one-half inch in diameter. The host rock is a brecciated rhyolite porphyry that has intruded quartz-feldspar porphyry of Mississippian age . The host rock is itself intruded by an acid porphyry called transition rock and is underlain by a microgranite. The mineralized zones, host rock, transition rock and microgranite are all thought to be derived from the same magma, and to represent progressive fractions from that magma.

Measures taken to prevent and detect fires due to spontaneous combustion, and fires involving conveyor belts, are described in detail.IntroductionConsidering the over-all picture of present-day mining operations, the expenditure required to provide a proper system of mine ventilation and fife control should be regarded as a sound investment that will pay back in increased mining efficiency, improved safety, health, and morale of the miners.Mine ventilation control and mine fife detection and fighting are inseparable, because a ventilation system can spread deadly products of combustion just as efficiently as it does life-sustaining oxygen. Therefore, the possibility of a mine fife occurring is of particular concern.The flirt objective is to prevent a fife. The second objective is to design the ventilation system so that a positive fresh air supply can be ensured on each main level regardless of the location of the fife. The third objective is to be able to detect the fife at an early stage and to extinguish it before it can develop into a major fife.Accordingly, at Inco, very extensive measures are taken to prevent fires and to locate, isolate and extinguish them rapidly. To obtain an early warning, it is not sufficient to know that a fife has started, but it is also necessary to know where the fife is burning."

Particles for heap leaching in conventional circuits are prepared using Cone crushers. Cone crushers are used to crush the ore to the size range between 12-25 mm for heap leaching operations. Leaching from these relatively coarse particles occurs only at the surface and in subsurface regions, which are accessible from the surface by cracks and pores. Since leaching is active in accessible areas, the method of comminution that forms multiple cracks and pores would offer an advantage for heap leach. An investigation was performed in this study to assess if the HPGR forms more cracks and pores than a Cone crusher. X-ray computed tomography (CT) was used to characterize the degree of cracks and pores formed by these two comminution devices that can be used for heap leaching feed preparation. In order to compare the effect of the comminution method on crack network generation, a bulk sample of the zinc ore was crushed by the HPGR at three different pressure settings (45, 95 and 120 bar), the sample ore was also crushed with a Cone crusher for comparison purposes. Products from the Cone crusher and HPGR experiment were then screened into five size fractions ((-25 +19), (-19+16), (-16+9.5), (-9.5+5), (-5+4.75) mm), Subsamples from the ((-25 +19), (-16+9.5), (-5+4.75) mm) size fractions were analysed. The spatial distribution of the crack network of sphalerite particles was characterized using a highresolution industrial X-ray CT system. This paper describes the use of image analysis techniques including image segmentation, which uses a combination of thresholding and other methods to characterize and quantify crack and mineral dissemination in the sphalerite particles after comminution with the HPGR and Cone crusher. The results are validated with those obtained using traditional techniques such as physical gas (with N2) adsorption, mercury intrusion porosimetry, SEM and QEMSCAN.

Flow studies have been conducted on nickel-water suspensions in a 1in.-diam., 42-ft.-long transparent lab-oratory pipeline at concentrations of up to 25 per cent, by volume, and slurry velocities of up to 15 ft/sec. The average size of the nickel powder was approximately 150 mesh (106J.L). Three flow regime were noted. At the highest velocities, i.e., above 10 ft/;sec., where the concentration distribution through the vertical diameter was most uniform, pressure gradients could be correlated with the Durand-Condolios equation (7,8). An intermediate region, i.e., from 7 ft/sec. to10 ft/sec., could be distinguished, the lower velocity limit being that at which nickel particles began to deposit. This region was also marked by decreasing pressure gradients, for a given concentration, as the velocity was reduced. The upper velocity limit in this region was also uniquely defined in that the friction factor for any nickel concentration was the same as that for water. In the third regime, below about 7 ft/sec

"Quelques soixante-dix-sept plutons présents dans la Sous-Province de Pontiac et dans la partie centrale de la Sous-Province de I’Abitibi ont fait I ’objet d’une reconnaissance systématique. Ils ont été regroupes en huit suites plutoniques majeures et trois suites mineures à partir de critères géologiques et petro logiques. Parmi les suites majeures, quatre représentent I' activité intrusive la plus ancienne dans la région. L’une d' entre e/les est représentée par deux complexes anorthosito-gabbroi' ques lites et les trois autres comprennent les orthogneiss dioritiques a leucotonalitiques et les intrusions dons la composition varie de diurétique et granodioritique à leucotonalitique. Leur mise en place peut être pretectonique a syn ou tarditectonique; certains plutons sont synvolcaniques. Quelques data/ions U! Pb effectuées à propos de ces roches donnent des âges s' étalant entre 2 718 et 2 694 MA. Les données géochimiques indiquent la présence des deux lignées magmatiques, tholemique et calcoalcaline bien qu’il n'y ait aucune évidence de relations entre elles dans I' espace et dans le temps. Ces suites magmatiques différentes peuvent provenir soit d’une croute tholemique impliquée dans un processus de subduction soit directement du manteau.Les trois autres suites majeures comprenant des monzodiorites, des granodiorites et des monzonites ainsi que les deux suites mineures comprenant des syenites correspondent à un évènement intrusif plus jeunesse déroulant entre2 694 et2 680 MA. Ces roches sont syn, tarti a post tectoniques et sont enrichies en alcalins, Ba, Sr et terres rares legeres par rapport aux quatre suites précédentes. Leurs caractères chimiques prop res suggèrent qu' e/les proviennent d' une source différente par rapport à celle precedemment citee.La derniere suite plutonique majeure correspond a un monzogranite leucocrate, riche en pegmatite, également syn a tard tectonique, dont I' age n' est pas connu avec précision. ll représente le seul granite ""vrai"" de la région et dérive d’une anatexie soit des meta sédiments soit des granodiorites-tonalites plus anciennes. La troisième suite plutonique mineure correspond a quatre stocks de granodiorite porphyrique qui n’ont pas été étudiés en détail.ABSTRACTSevenly-sevenplutons have been identified in the east-centra/part of the Abitibi Subprovince and adjacent Pontiac Subprovince. These have been subdivided, on the basis of geological and petrological criteria, into eight major and three minor plutonic suite. Four of the major suite, which represent the oldest intrusive activity in the area, range in composition from dioritic-leucotonalitic orthogneisses to diorite-granodiorite/leucotonalite and include two layered anorthosite- gabbro complexes. Their time of emplacement ranges from pretectonic to syn-late-tectonic and some plutons are synvolcanic. U-Pb zircon ages for these rocks range from 2 718 to 2 694 Ma. Geochemical data indicate the presence of both calc-alkaline and tholeiitic magma series for these rocks although there is no evidence time and space relationships between the two. The different magma series also suggest the derivation of these rocks from two sources, either from subduced tholeiitic crust or directly from the mantle. Three major monzodiorite-granodiorite, monzonite, and two minor syenite suites comprise a younger inlrusive event ranging from 2 694 to 2 680 Ma in age. These rocks are syn-, late- to post-tectonica and, compared to the above four plutonic suites, are enriched in alkalis, Ba, Sr and light Rare Earth Elements.Their distinctive geochemistry suggests that these rocks were derived from a different source region than for the older plutonic suites. "Several types of stratiform and epigenetic gold deposits have been found in New Brunswick, It is the purpose of this paper to describe and classify the epigenetic deposits and demonstrate their relationship to tectonic evolution. The stratiform deposits are mostly volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits that are described elsewhere (Davies et al., 1985).The auriferous epigenetic deposits include quartz-carbonate veins and stockworks, polymetallic veins, contact metasomatic, porphyry copper and volcanic breccia (epithermal) deposits. These epigenetic deposits are concentrated in major fault zones that define or are close to the boundaries of tectonostratigraphic terranes or terranes and cover sequences. The host rocks of the deposits were subjected to extensive crustal thickening resulting from thrusting and/or high angle reverse faulting.The gold deposits north of the Avalon Terrane occur indilatent structures related to mainly dextral wrench faulting that postdated the episode of crustal thickening. The deposits along the southern margin of the Avalon Terrane occur in structures related to late phase thrusting."

"The Cinola gold deposit in the northern Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, is in a clastic sequence consisting of a lower shale of the Late Cretaceous Haida Formation and an overlying interbedded sequence of pebble conglomerate and coarse-grained sandstone of the Middle Miocene Skonun Formation. Both formations are intruded by a stock and dykes of porphyritic rhyolite. Two K-Ar model ages indicate mineralization and probably porphyritic-rhyolite intrusion at about 14 Ma (middle Miocene). A splay of the Sandspit fault system constitutes the footwall on the west of the deposit.The Cinola deposit can be classed as Carlin-type based on features such as (1) small particle size for gold, (2) Tertiary age of mineralization, (3) element abundances (e.g. high Hg), (4) dominantly argillic alteration, (5) a structural setting associated with major faults, (6) porosity of the host rock and (7) spatial and possibly genetic association with felsic intrusions. Gold is widespread and occurs mainly as grains of< 0.5 11-m in silicified sedimentary rock, and in quartz veins. Locally, coarse > 100 11-m particles of native gold occur in quartz veins, especially in strongly brecciated porphyritic-rhyolite. Ore minerals are mainly pyrite and marcasite, but include small amounts of chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, pyrrhotite, cinnabar, tiemannite (HgSe), rutile, magnetite, hematite and limonite in addition to native gold and electrum. No silver minerals have been found; silver was found in gold particles in amounts varying from 6.2 to 24.2 weight per cent. Alteration products are sericite, illite, kaolinite and chlorite, with abundant quartz of several stages.The host rocks, specifically the Skonun Formation, formed as an alluvial plain facies in a braided river system discharging into a marine basin in early Middle Miocene time. During the Middle Miocene, this sequence was intruded by a rhyolitic stock. The highly porous and permeable Miocene clastic sequence apparently provided an optimum setting for the development of a large geothermal system, the energy for which probably derived from the rhyolite stock. Mineral deposition followed a well-defined paragenesis, which, from oldest to youngest, is: (1) precipitation of iron sulphide minerals, and early quartz; (2) several stqges of quartz veins, with deposition of sphalerite succeeded by galena, chalcopyrite and visible gold. Micron-size gold was precipitated throughout these two stages of mineral deposition. Argillitization of the host rocks probably in part coincided with the mineralization and continued during cooling of the geothermal cell.In-situ reserves have been estimated at 41.1 million metric tons averaging 1.85 g Au/tonne using a cutoff grade of0.86 g Au/ tonne."

"As shortage in the supply of mineral commodities become more probable, there is an increasing need for reliable and comparable reserve/resource data. It is therefore necessary to standardize the traditional classification procedure by quantifying the three basic criteria in resource evaluation: economic feasibility, geologic assurance and recovery. For the portion of fairly well documented deposits and as far as their geologic parameters are concerned, geostatistical methods can considerably improve the quality of ore classification. In respect of economic feasibility and recovery, approved geostatistical methods can be introduced directly into the classification procedure. The concept of geologic assurance, however, requires a new interpretation in terms of geostatistical error spread. As the ""risk"" in estimating an ore parameter is also a function of the respective block size, it is reasonable to define not only upper limits for the risk intervals for each class of uncertainty, but also block dimensions which reflect the typical stage of planning associated with the different ore categories. An algorithm has been developed to block out areas inside a mine or a large panel which satisfies the constraints of an ore category in respect of the risk intervals of a parameter and in respect of their size. The method has been computerized and is demonstrated on a massive copper-nickel deposit.IntroductionFacing an uncertain future with respect to the demand and supply of mineral commodities, both governmental authorities and the mining industries show an increasing interest in a useful framework for the assessment and classification of the remaining mineral resources"". This is reflected by the recently published appraisal and classification scheme of the United Nations as well as by the new or revised classification systems of the USA; Canada or Australia. Moreover there are various classification schemes which are currently discussed in major mining companies."
