Slope stability has now become a practical tool in the design and oper- ation of open pits. The stability of rock slope depends on many factors, including not only structural geology, the existence of weak layers, ground- water, blasting and weathering, but also the virgin stress field. This paper presents an application of a numerical method to investigate the effect of the virgin stress on slope stability. The finite element method is employed to simulate the excavation of open pits. Redistributed stress fields in the slope of open pit are computed for several different virgin stress fields. Based on the redistributed stress fields, the shear force which tends to produce sliding of a rock mass and the frictional resistance to sliding are evaluated. The possibility of potential failure is assessed by the limit equilibrium method. The combination of the finite element method with the equilibrium method provides a powerful analytical tool for slope stability. The significant effect of virgin stress on the stability of slopes is shown by studying a typical case.

The Prestea Goldfields Ltd of Ghana, West Africa has produced over 170 t of gold with average grade of 11 g/t since 1912. The deposits occur in a wide shear zone which closely follow the Birimian-Tarkwaian contact. Both the Birimian and Tarkwaian systems are of Precambrian age. Underground exploration is carried out to delineate ore bodies by means of AX size diamond drilling at 50 m sampling intervals. After the orebody has been delineated, development work is carried out by exposing the gold reef. Channel sampling is then carried out at about 3 m intervals in both the stope and stope drives. A channel sample length is commonly 0.6 in, but may vary depending on physical characteristics of the reef. The values of channel samples are linearly combined to obtain the average reef or slope values and/or widths of the exposed sections. The sampling practice and methods of improving the efficacy of sampling at the mine are described.

The forecaster must focus attention on a number of key areas of interest. These areas include major economic trends and changing GNP structure, consumption time series, end-use consumption patterns and substitution potential, accurately updating data bases (up to 5 years ahead), random factor estimation and examination of both long term and secondary mine potential. While metal price forecasting has suffered due to recent uncertainties, with increased importance on planning tools and cost analyses, it is still a necessary function. Forecasting is subject to the real world and the metal industry is made up of imperfect markets in a dynamic state. The real world provides the challenge to improve the accuracy of forecasting.

"Every year a large number of projects are evaluated by small listed and unlisted mining companies that are hoping to find the ideal project, which will catapult them from a mining junior status to that of a mid-tier mining company. Usually this includes finding the æidealÆ or ærightÆ orebody and then developing a process which will allow cost-effective recovery of the valuable metals and the production of a saleable product. These dreams are seldom realised and there are a number of good and obvious reasons for this. Issues that are generally high up on the agenda for the smaller companies are: cost of developing a project before the feasibility study stage finding a suitable, or optimum processing technology financing of the project dealing with risk.The most expensive part of the development process for the small miner is often the exploration side of the business and finding the æidealÆ orebody. However, finding the right orebody will not be discussed in this paper. The æidealÆ orebody does not necessarily solve the problems of the mining junior, as much of the uncertainty lies in the process required to recover and produce the final metal product. Once a mineralised deposit has been identified and the grade at least reasonably qualified, the development of a suitable process becomes the driver to convert the deposit into an orebody. This paper proposes that a small exploration company has a very limited opportunity to succeed if it does not do sufficient homework before it identifies the æidealÆ orebody. The risk profile for the small mining company, by its very nature, has to be different to that of a major company and as a result the opportunities often lie in managing different and often new process options, which may be the key to bring such projects on line successfully.CITATION:Muller, H and Lorenzen, L, 2012. A survey was undertaken on the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter in which samples of slag and matte were taken along the length of the integrated flash smelting furnace and analysed to determine the variation of nickel and iron concentration. At the same time the oxygen potential of the slag and matte was measured using disposable tip solid-state oxygen probes. The results show that the oxygen potential of the slag is higher than that of the matte and that both decrease from the reaction shaft end to the slag tap hole end of the furnace. The slag and matte are not at equilibrium except towards the tap hole end. Reduction of nickel and magnetite from the slag occurs before the slag enters the slag-cleaning appendage by reaction with iron in the matte. Thermodynamic modelling and laboratory experiments showed that the equilibrium nickel and magnetite contents of the slag in the absence of a carbonaceous reducing agent are about 0.4 per cent and 7.5 per cent, respectively. A carbonaceous reductant is required to obtain a lower nickel content in the slag.

The paper describes a spectrometric method and apparatus developed for lithology logging in brown coal formations. The nuclear spectromet- ric technique developed is able to delineate coal/sand/clay seams. One requirement was to log inside drilling rods, as well as cased or open holes. The method described is based on combined natural gamma and gamma- gamma techniques using a spectrometric system for signal acquisition and subsequent computer based on-line data analysis and interpretation.

The results of laboratory grindability tests on coal are of primary importance to the designers and operators of coal grinding mills, and coal handling plants in general. However, the potential industrial application of these test results have not been fully realised due to a lack of laboratory-test/field data correlations. This paper focuses on the grindability characteristics of Queensland coals, and provides a new look at an old problem in terms of (i) a more rigorous characterisation of the grindability properties of coal and its associated mineral impurities, and (ii) the correlation of laboratory grindability test results with the size characteristics of run-of-plant thermal coals, and their pulverising characteristics in full-scale mills. A new grindability test is also proposed based on the Yancey, Geer and Price laboratory abrasion-test mill.

The Pine Creek gold mining development consists of a 1000000 tonne/yr open cut mine, a carbon-in-pulp processing plant and support facilities. The operation is located at Pine Creek, 230 km south of Darwin in the Northern Territory. The mine was officially opened in late October 1985, having been designed and constructed in less than twelve months, despite front end expenditure constraints and unseasonal cyclonic rains shortly after commencement of site activity. Non-traditional methods and attitudes were required to be adopted by both Engineer and Owner to successfully bring the project from preliminary design through construction and commissioning in a minimum time. Those areas which differ from the more traditional approaches to Project Management are examined together with a review of the advantages and penalties of these methods.

Papua New Guinea's mainland is dominated by a foreland thrust belt, which can be divided into two zones. The "body" zone is floored by Palaeozoic granites and metamorphics of the Fly Platform (Tasman Orogen). Underlying the "tail" zone is Papuan Plateau, rifted from the Tasman Orogen during Coral Sea spreading, and believed to underlie the Papuan Peninsula and Papuan Islands region (D'Entrecasteaux, Woodlark, Misima, Sudest, and Rossel Islands). Thrusting began in the Miocene and continues today in the crust below the "body" zone. The youngest known thrusted rocks in the "tail" zone are Pliocene in age. Recognition of foreland thrusting has major implications for petroleum prospectivity of the Papuan and North New Guinea Basins, mineral exploration prospectivity, and geological terrane identification in PNG.

As part of its Concentrator operation Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited uses wet high intensity magnetic separation to upgrade shaley low grade ore in the minus 0.5mm size range. Materials handling problems, largely caused by fine ore types and design deficiencies, surfaced in the Fines Treatment Plant soon after Concentrator commissioning in 1979. Surging throughout the circuit impaired process efficiency and added to problems caused by capacity and process control limitations. In 1981 extensive modification works were initiated to supplement minor changes made to that date. The new circuit significantly increases capacity and provides greater process control.

As the oxide reserves in an oxide/sulphide deposit are exhausted transition to the treatment of sulphides should be investigated in detail and well before processing the sulphide ore commences. The investigation should be broad based to consider all treatment options and not restricted entirely by the existing process plant treatment method. These options may include cyanidation, flotation, roasting, bacterial leaching or gravity treatment and are chosen on the basis of various testwork responses. Experiences in laboratory testing of sulphides and treatment of sulphides at various operations are discussed. This includes the treatment of copper/gold sulphides, CIP treatment of sulphides and treatment of marcasite ore in a conventional CIP circuit.

Challenges facing middle management in the 1980's and beyond are not confined to business matters such as industrial relations, government and legal constraints, corporate takeovers, and commodity marketing. More particularly they deal with people issues and the interrelationship of corporate/ family relationships. There is a need for corporations to acknowledge the growing conflict between corporate/family roles being brought about by such matters as equal opportunity, double professional marriage partnerships, personal mobility and the increasing stress faced by managers as a result of current demands and expectations being placed on them. While the main responsibility for managing professional life as well as the relationship between professional and private life rests with the individual executive, corporations nevertheless have a major responsibility to assist these executives in this management process. Corporations in Australia are taking steps to address this situation but much more needs to be done. This was highlighted in the March 1985 "Middle Management" course with its associated Spouses Programme presented jointly by Australian Mineral Foundation and The Australian Administrative Staff College. Effective communication is at the heart of the matter but no amount of training on this subject will bear fruit unless there is an associated commitment by executives to improve the effectiveness of their communi- cation process both in their corporate and family roles.

Most geostatistical techniques applied to the estimation of ore reserves assume relatively unifonn grade and thickness within an ore deposit environment. In shear-hosted mineralisation this rarely occurs. The distribution of mineralisation is controlled by the kinematic and geometric variation within the shear zone. Although the kinematic variation is dependent primarily on the temperature (and consequently the depth) of formation of the deposit, the geometric variation appears to be relatively insensitive to this parameter. Shoot mineralisation is controlled either by the intersection of secoodary shear planes (brittle deformation) or the stretching lineation of the mylonitic fabric (ductile defonnation).Once the shear geometry is clearly identified, it is critical to review the distribution of grade and thickness of mineralisation. The practice of cutting high-grade intersections without reference to the shear model leads to underestimation of the amount of gold in the deposit. High-grade shoots may occur as pipe-shaped bodies within the system; their identification is essential for both resource estimation and mine planning purposes.

To follow the development of the central crushing plant it is necessary briefly to outline the history of the Lake View and Star Limited. This Company, when first constituted, took over the properties of the Lake View Consols, Hannan's Star, and Chaffers Gold Mines.The Company then treated the ore won from these leases at two dry crushing, all-roasting plants, situated adjacent to each other on the site of the present Chaffers Treatment Plant that handles all the ore won by the Lake View and Star Ltd.SUbsequent to the initial union of the three companies mentioned, the Ivanhoe Gold Corporation and the Golden Horse Shoe Ltd. were absorbed. Still later, and after the original crushing plant was erected, the Associated Gold Mines of Australia were purchased.A very extensive development policy was adopted by the Company's management in the late 1920's, and as the underground programme progressed, it became eVident that a large treatment plant would be required. The volumetric distribution of valuable mineral, or phase, within a set of particles is called the liberation distribution. To optimise a mineral processing plant it is necessary to know the liberation distribution in most of the streams, especially those adjacent to separation devices. Possibly the most common method of analysing ore particles is to section sets of similarly-sized particles. However, the observed sections can appear liberated even if the particle is composite. This means that the 'apparent' liberation distribution can be very different to the 'actual' liberation distribution. This discrepancy is called stereological error. One must then somehow estimate the actual liberation distribution using the apparent liberation distribution. This problem is called the liberation distribution problem and its solution is the subject of this paper. The solution is based on a sorting algorithm which uses geometric probability equations. These equations are based on the assumption that sectioning is isotropic and uniform. Apart from these assumptions the equations are completely independent of particle shape or texture. The algorithm is verified by numerical simulation and experimental methods. For the numerical simulations the correspondence between the actual and estimated liberation distributions is excellent. For the experimental methods, the agreement is not as good and appears to be due to experimental errors.

Blasting, particularly bench blasting, uses finite length cylinders of explosive close to two free faces. The rock to be blasted is usually intersected by a complex 3-D system of joints. To fully simulate a blast, a 3-D dynamic model is required. It is shown that the static stress distribution around a long cylinder can be reproduced by superposing the static stress distribution of a suitable chain of spheres. Thus, the dynamic results for individual spheres given by Favreau (1969) can now be substituted for the static results to give a dynamic model of the stress distribution around a long cylinder. Comparison of measured and computed waveforms show that the measured waveforms are much more attenuated and dispersed than expected. The consequences for explosive evaluation and design are Discussed.

An extensive trial of laser-based survey and monitoring systems at Hillgrove Resources Kanmantoo Copper Mine in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia, has proved the capabilities of the system in monitoring rock movements on open pit walls. Initially, the trial involved deploying a Maptek I-Site 8820 laser scanner and the proof-of-concept Maptek Sentry software in the Nugent Pit to monitor ductile rock movements located up to 260 m away. The system was proven to be capable of monitoring various rock movements from 1.5 tonne rockfalls up to a 40 m high toppling wall failure. Data collected from smaller rockfalls was used to help build a database for Hillgrove’s rockfall management program. As part of the trial, the laser scanner was deployed to monitor a ramp movement event, as well as the toppling failure, adjacent to an IBIS slope stability radar. Both devices monitored the slump and the slowly developing toppling movements, with similar results. Although the radar was used as the successful ‘critical alarm’ device for the toppling failure, post-failure analysis showed the laser-based system to be capable of performing a similar role in the ductile rock regime; albeit over much shorter distances than the radar capability. A second laser scanner was deployed to monitor Kanmantoo’s Emily Pit in early December 2014, where it successfully provided critical alarm warnings for a block topple event. Sentry software, which takes advantage of Maptek I-Site 3D spatial imaging technology, was first released in November 2014 to meet industry demand for a cost effective, flexible system to detect movement. Sentry has now been re-launched as a fully transportable monitoring system. Deployed in a custom trailer, the system offers a power and communications module, cellular and Wi-Fi networking and a stable bollard for the I-Site laser scanner and Sentry software. This paper will present rock wall movement data from the Sentry trial and a subsequent two years of monitoring of the open pit walls at the Kanmantoo Copper Mine, at distances out to 750m. In addition, examples of remote geological mapping and small rockfall detection, using the laser scans, will be described. The Sentry system has proven to be beneficial for the continual improvement of slope monitoring and risk management at hard rock mines. A database of over 1300 earthquakes has been used to investigate the relationship between seismicity and tectonics in two areas of eastern Queensland and NE New South Wales. These areas have been monitored by several networks that were installed primarily to monitor seismicity associated with the impounding of large reservoirs. Events that occurred prior to the installation of these networks have been excluded from the analysis because they have large uncertainties in location.Seismicity in SE Queensland and NE New South Wales is concentrated in the coastal regions. Activity also extends off the coast of Queensland and beyond the continental shelf. The coastal activity is mainly within the New England Fold Belt. An area of the fold belt overlain by the Clarence-Moreton Basin is also active. There is an area of activity near St. George that correlates to the Wunger Ridge. Fraser Island and the adjacent onshore area, near Maryborough, are notably aseismic.Within the New England Fold Belt there is a NNW trending zone of concentrated activity that includes the South D'Aguilar Block and the Esk Trough as far as Gayndah. The Nambour Basin, the Gympie Province, and the southern portion of the Yarrol Block are significantly less active.Composite focal mechanisms of several groups of accurately located earthquakes in SE Queensland indicate predominantly reverse faulting. This faulting is the result of the crust being compressed horizontally in a NE-SW direction.Activity in the Burdekin Falls Dam area of central eastern Queensland is confined to the Drummond and Bowen Basins. There is also significant activity offshore from Townsville and Bowen.

While the underground mining work environment may have processes and equipment considered unique, most of the broad issues likely to affect the occupational health and safety of employees are not. One such occupational health and safety issue that is common to the mining sector and most other industries is noise. Noise as an occupational health and safety issue is of national significance. Presently noise induced hearing loss costs Australia around $35 million per year on compensation claims experience alone. Noisy equipment and work environments are still being tolerated in parts of the mining industry as `part of the job'. Where work has been undertaken in noise management, considerable emphasis has been placed on either industrial hygiene monitoring programs or the provision of hearing protectors to miners working on or around noisy equipment.Opportunities for more cost-effective and long term methods for controlling noise exist. Ready to apply solutions to noise problems in the mining industry are available, but for many mining operators this information is often difficult to obtain. To overcome this problem, the SHARE program collects and distributes solutions to occupational health and safety problems. The program aims to help organisations to close the gap between what is known about solving health and safety problems and what is actually being applied at the shop floor level: Recent developments have incorporated the SHARE program concept into worksite hazard management projects that involve the participation of employee representatives, front line supervisors and engineering personnel. Besides providing workforce members with an increased understanding of hazard management skills, the SHARE in-house program results in the implementation and sharing of solutions to health and safety problems by the program participants.

An outburst is the spontaneous ejection of pulverized coal and gas from the working face in an underground mine. It is caused by overstressing the rock, due predominantly to the influence of geological structures on in situ stresses, stress concentration from the excavation and overburden load on mine openings, and large volumes of gas sorbed in the rock. The spontaneous release of high pressure gas creates intense shock waves which may cause damage to the mine ven- tilation system and the pulverized rock/coal ejected may cause injury or death to miners. The gases emitted pollute the mine air and may also result in death to miners.
