Two sessions during the recent AMC Mining Convention in Los Angeles, September 23-26, served to update industry personnel on the status of health and safety regulations in the US. As reflected by the American Mining Congress resolution on mine safety and health, "Based on experience with the federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 and the federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, (AMC) does not believe that laws designed to force compliance with regulations through the imposition of criminal or civil penalties will result in safer mines. (AMC) feels that the government's participation will be much more productive if greater emphasis is placed on research, training, and inspections aimed primarily at assisting operators and employees in recognizing and eliminating hazardous conditions and practices.

Early this year at the University of Arizona in Tucson, a survey was made of student opinion about the minerals industry. Over 100 of the three page questionnaires were completed and these were analyzed by the following categories: 40 Mining Engineering students, 20 Geological Engineering with 2 Geophysical Engineering students, 15 Geology students, 7 Metallurgical Engineering, 26 Underclassmen, 29 Graduate students and a composite of 84 total students. Not all of the results of the survey were predictable. After graduation there is a strong preference toward going to work in the mineral industries. The next most popular options, but trailing the first choice greatly, was graduate work or employment in another industry. A smattering of other choices were for teaching, government or research. None checked the box for drop out.

TWO intermediate phases enter into equilibrium with the primary solid solutions of titanium.' The TiMn2 phase was identified by Wallbaum2 as of the C14 type isomorphous with MgZn2. Contrary to Maykuth, et al.,¹ the phase occuring at about the 50-50 atomic proportion has been shown to derive from a peritectoid reaction.:' A 30 day anneal at 900°C of an alloy containing 52 wt pct Mn developed sufficient of the new phase to give a clear and predominant diffraction pattern. The powder pattern was taken in a 14 cm diameter powder camera using filtered Cu Ka radiation. In all, 75 lines were recognized and measured. Interplanar spacing and observed intensities for the first 26 of these are given in Table I.

THE Federated American Engineering Societies through its Executive Board has endorsed House Bill 5230, introduced April 26, 1921, which provides for- the completion of the topographical survey of the United States. Before this bill can be reported out it will be necessary for the House Committee on -interstate and foreign commerce to hold hearings. This will not be done unless the engineers of the country show interest -and demand action which should be taken immediately after the recess ends and Congress reconvenes this fall. Surveys and maps have been made in this country ever since Captain John Smith mapped Chesapeake Bay about. 300 years ago, but it is only in comparatively recent years that the need for accurate maps has been keenly felt by those engaged in the industrial' and commercial development of the country.

Thirty years ago a party of American Engineers, with members of their families, belonging to the four national engineering societies, sailed for Europe and visited England and the Paris Exposition of 1889 and received many courtesies, official, professional, and individual. Plans: have been made for a reunion dinner to be held in New York City, about May 26, at which it is hoped that all survivors, ladies as well as men, of that trip may meet again. MUCH has been said and written about the various uses of die-castings, their applications in the various industries and their advantages and disadvantages. Examination of this literature, however, fails to disclose any data concerning the effect of temperature upon any of the physical properties of die-casting alloys. The uses and applications of die castings are so numerous, and of such a varied nature, that far too lengthy a manuscript would be required to list all of them. Brief mention of some specific cases will suffice to illustrate the temperature ranges in which certain die castings function. Automobile hardware, such as hub caps, door handles, radiator caps, etc., can be used as one example. Castings of this type are constantly exposed to varying climatic conditions, temperatures ranging from below zero to upwards of 100° F. Refrigerator parts, such as ice-cube trays, etc., form another example. Approaching the other temperature extreme, we encounter conditions such as are found in kitchens in which oven-heat indicator parts, cooking utensils, waffle grids, etc., embody use of die castings, where temperatures as high as 500° F. are often met with. Because of this variation in service temperatures, it was felt necessary to ascertain the effect of these temperatures upon the physical properties of die-casting alloys. The Charpy impact test was chosen first because of its simplicity, and because of the fact that brittleness is more likely to be objectionable in die castings than hardness or other physical properties.

WET processes for the extraction of copper from its ores have of late attracted much attention, especially in Europe, where the use of oupriferous iron-pyrites as a' source of sulphur prevails. These processes present an additional interest, when, as is often the case, the copper-ore's to be treated contain one or both of the precious metals, since the complete separation of these from copper, either in the dry or the moist way, is, as is well known, one of the difficult problems of metallurgy. The principal wet processes hitherto in use for the extraction of copper from its ores, may be included under three classes : I. Those in which the copper in snlphuretted ores is rendered soluble in water by calcining them, after a preliminary roasting which removes the greater part of their sulphur, with a portion of common salt, by which the copper is converted into a chloride (Long-maid and Henderson), or with sulphate of soda, by which sulphate of copper is formed (Monnier). Allied to these is the method by which a portion of the copper is got as soluble sulphate by roasting without addition, a process which is sometimes modified and rendered more complete by re-roasting the lixiviated residues with the addition of a portion of raw sulphuretted ore (Bankart). II. Those methods in which free chlorhydric or sulphuric acid is used to dissolve the copper- from oxidized or roasted ores. These, while simple and efficient, are too costly, except in certain localities where chlorhydric acid is a waste product. Related to them is the plan which consists in exposing the oxidized and moistened ores to the slow action of sulphurous acid mixed with air, by which a soluble sulphate of copper is formed. It has been proposed to decompose the solutions of sulphate or chloride of copper by sulphuretted hydrogen, thus separating the copper as sulphide, and using the liberated acid to dissolve fresh portions of oxidized copper. It is, however, the almost universal practice to throw down the copper from its solutions, however obtained, in the metallic state by the use of iron, either scrap-iron or iron-sponge; although in some instances

NEVER before have so many men chosen the mineral technology field for their college training. In the college year 1936-'37, 7190 such students were enrolled in the 53 schools of the United States. My last study of the mineral technology schools of the United States and Canada was made for the year -1934-'35, and the current study, as the previous one was made for the A.I.M.E. under the auspices of the Division of Mineral Industry Education. Altogether, four studies of enrollment have been made. The first three were for successive college years beginning with 1932-'33. This present one covers a two-year period, for the purpose of these studies may he served satisfactorily if they are made biannually. The data on the schools were collected in the same way as for former studies, 'namely, by questionnaire, dated in this case Nov. 18, 1936. The figures reported are therefore comparable with those of former cars.

Permeation rates for nitrogen through are-cast tungsten were measured in the temperature range 1800° to 2600°C at nitrogen pressure differentials of 1.0 and 0.1 atm. Gas chromatography was used to measure the quantities of nitrogen which permeated through 0.26-and 0.53-mm-thick membranes. Permeation rates were proportional to the difference between the square roots of the nitrogen pressure on each side of the membrane and inversely proportional to membrane thickness, indicating that atomic nitrogen was the difjusing species and that diffusion was the rate-limiting step of the process. Permeation coefficients calculated from the rates may be represented by the equation: where P is expressed in the units cu cm (stP)-mm per 1/2 sq cm-min-atm"' and 70.0 * 0.8 is the activation energy in kcal per mole of permeating species. In a previous paper' permeation rates were reported for hydrogen and for oxygen through tungsten. The permeation cells used for the hydrogen measurements were suitable for measuring nitrogen permeation under similar conditions, so the study was extended to include nitrogen. Permeation rates of nitrogen through the polycrys-talline arc-cast tungsten membranes were measured in the temperature range 1800" to 2600°C using two membrane thicknesses and two nitrogen pressure differentials. Permeation coefficients were calculated and the activation energy of the process determined. THEORY For diatomic gases which dissociate prior to diffusion, the quantity of gas which permeates through a membrane or wall at an elevated temperature where bulk diffusion is the rate-limiting step of the process is given by the equation: where: q = total amount of gas permeating a membrane, P = temperature-dependent permeation coefficient, A = area of membrane, t = time, p1 = gas pressure of high-pressure side, p2 = gas pressure of low-pressure side, and d = thickness of membrane. When bulk diffusion is the rate-controlling step, and the solubility of the gas obeys Henry's law, a further relationship is that, for any given temperature and pressure, the permeation is the product of diffusivity and the amount in solution. The permeation coefficient, P, is temperature-dependent according to the equation: where: Po = permeation constant, Q = activation energy, R = gas constant, and T = absolute temperature. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Cell Design and Experimental Apparatus. Two of the permeation cells used for the previous measurements of hydrogen permeation are shown in Fig. 1. Each consisted of a cylindrical chamber divided into two parts by a permeation membrane fabricated from high-purity (>99.9 pct W) wrought tungsten sheet made from vacuum arc-cast tungsten. The membrane in one cell was 0.26 mm thick and the other was 0.53 mm. The fabrication of these cells was described previously.' The permeation cells were mounted vertically in a high-temperature tungsten resistance furnace and the membranes and the center portions heated to test temperatures. Temperatures were measured by sighting an optical pyrometer on the edge of the membrane through a small hole in a tungsten plate which was fastened to the side of the cell. This arrangement provided an approximate black-body condition and eliminated the need for emittance corrections. Appropriate corrections were made for the quartz window through which the temperatures were measured. Argon gas flowed through the 10-liter volume of the furnace at the rate of 4.7 liters per min. INTRODUCTION Natural gas containing 25.65 per cent H2S and 4.75 pcr cent CO, is produced from the Pine Creek field, Alta. It is dehydrated at wellheads, gathered at 2.200 psig and transported 26 miles to the Windfall field where it is delivered to the inlet of injection compressors at 1,800 psig. The daily average volume of gas transported is 160 MMcf. The project is believed to be unique in its combination of percentage of hydrogen sulfide, operating pressure and transportation distance. This paper describes the project and presents details of some of the design features, corrosion control program and centralized automatic operational control. The Pine Creek field project is one phase of a joint operation of two fields—thc other being the Windfall field. The two fields lie about 30 miles north of Edson, Alta. and 20 miles west of Whitecourt, Alta., respectively, as shown on the map (Fig. 1). They are owned by the same interests and operated according to a plan for maximum economic recovery of products. The Windfall Leduc D-3 reservoir contains a rich condensate-bearing gas containing 15.5 per cent HIS. The gas from the Pine Creek field contains only very small quantities of butane and heavier products. The Windfall reservoir is being cycled to obtain maximum condensate recovery using gas from the Pine Creek field as the displacing fluid, while producing the residue sales gas for both fields from the Windfall field. The Pine Creek field development and gas-gathering facilities are shown on the map (Fig. 2). The producing formation is the Leduc D-3 reef at a depth of 11,300 ft. The original reservoir pressure was 4,590 psia at 7,400 ft subsea and the temperature is 245F. Eight wells are equippcd with dry desiccant dehydrators with the following capacity ratings: three at 35 MMcf/D; three at 20 MMcf/D; and two at 10 MMcf/D. WELLHEAD EQUIPMENT Dry desiccant dehydrators were designed to reduce the water content of the saturated wellhead stream to 2.5 lb of water/MMcf at 2,000 psig. This specification was necessary to prevent hydrates and corrosion forming in the pipeline which will operate at temperatures as low as 20F. A typical flow diagram is shown in Fig. 3, and Fig. 4 is a photograph of one of the wellhead installations. Some of the design details given below are subject to modification in the field. The well-stream flowing temperatures range from 135 to 170F. Wellhead flowing pressures up to 3,200 psig are reduced to the dehydrator-operating pressure of about 2,100 psig by throttling through a pressure control valve. Two processes for agglomerating fine sized ores with low temperature coke are described. One process (Orcarb) agglomerates ores with limited amounts of carbon; the other (ore-carbon pellets) pelletizes fine sized ores, using low temperature cokes as the binder. Data are presented on the products obtained when taconite, magnetite, and hematite concentrates and several titanium oxide ores were used. REDUCTION of finely divided oxide ores has long been a major metallurgical problem. Various methods of agglomerating, notably briquetting, sintering, nodulizing, and pelletizing, have been developed and are in industrial use. Carbon is the usual reducing agent for oxide ores and attempts have been made to agglomerate fine ores with coking coal in order to get the metallurgical advantages of intimate contact and increased particle sizes suitable for subsequent smelting or reduction.1-3 For the past three years, research has been in progress on two processes for combining fine sized ores with reactive carbon in the form of low temperature coke. By one process, designated Orcarb, the ore is coated with coke carbon in amounts limited to that required for reduction and the result is an appreciable but limited increase in product particle size over that of the original ore. The second process, called ore-carbon pellets, produces pellets of fine ore bound by low temperature coke. The first objective was to develop a process for combining an oxide ore with only enough carbon for its reduction, the amount being that derived from the simple reduction equations. The carbon (that amount theoretically required for the reduction of the oxides in an agglomerate with ore), calculated to CO, ranges from 10 pct for zinc calcines Or phosphate Ores to 21 pct for rutile and 26 pct for silica. The carbon required for reducing iron oxides falls between the extremes—10 and 26 pet' When the carbon in the agglomerate is low temperature coke, reduction by hydrogen may be expected to take place, thus modifying the calculated carbon require- ment. On the other hand, in practice, an excess of reducing agent over that required in theory is normally used. Screen sizes of three iron ores on which the greater part of the experimental work was performed are given in Table I. Most of the testing was done with Freeport (Renton Mine) coal, but Pittsburgh and Elkhorn bed coals were also used. The first objective was to agglomerate the ore with sufficient low temperature coke to provide carbon for reduction, i.e., in the range from 10 to 25 pct. This was accomplished by preheating the ore, mixing with pulverized coking coal, and completing the coal carbonization in a plain steel rotating retort. The pilot retort, as it is now constituted, is shown by diagram in Fig. 1 and photograph, Fig. 2. Ore is fed into the upper kiln by a screw; it is heated to 900° to 1100°F by direct flame and it is then discharged into an insulating hopper from which it goes

I. INTRODUCTION. SINCE the discovery of silver at Cobalt, Ontario, in 1903 more than 100,000,000 oz. of silver have been produced b: the mines in the Nipissing district, and there is reason to believe that at least as much more will be produced in the next five years. The estimated value of the aggregate output o ore to the end of 1910 is $48,327,280. The ore yielded 93,977,833, oz. of silver and was mined at a net profit of about $26,000,000. For 1910 the production was 30,558,825 oz. valued at $15,436,894, and yielding a profit of about $9,000',000 The details of the production of the Cobalt district for the years 1904 to 1909, inclusive, are given in Table I. IN a recent technical paper of the Central Committee of the French Coal Mines (Note technique No. 198, by L. Lahoussay) the author points out that continuous in¬crease in depth of mine shafts makes it more and more necessary to look for appropriate means to reduce the weights and dimensions of the hoisting ropes. Increasing depth demands a larger section and weight for the cable if the useful load is not to be cut down at the same time. This naturally leads to increased cost per ton, and at the same time creates serious mechanical difficulties. The dimensions of the hoisting engine must be increased, acceleration at the start must be decreased so as to avoid periods of excessive peak power loads, and a longer time be allowed to slow down the speed of the hoist when applying brakes. The hoisting rope, upon which depend the dimensions and hence the mass of the hoisting engine, presents the greatest obstacle to the development of hoisting from greater depths. Evidently, for a given depth, the total weight of the rope can be notably reduced by utilizing a wire rope of decreasing section, approaching the theoretical logarithmic form. This is a solution frequently adopted for great depths. Of course, the weight of the rope could be easily' diminished by reducing the useful load, but it is certain that with increasing depth of mining, more effort must be made to confine the hoisting to a small number of shafts, and increase the load hoisted per trip.

The demand for crude oil on the Pacific Coast during the year 1945. was so acute that the California crude supply had to be augmented by tank-car imports from the Texas and Rocky Mountain fields. Crude imports reached a high of 64,800 bbl. per day during June, with a total of 14,259,000 bbl. imported during the first 11 .months. The U. S. Navy also implemented the crude output from California pools by drilling and completing approximately 300 wells in the Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1 (Elk Hills), from which an established production of 65,000. bbl. per day was reached in late February and maintained until Aug. 17, 1945, when it was reduced to its preprogram level of 15,000 bbl. per day. Even with the conclusion of the Pacific war on V-J day (Aug. 14), the military petroleum product requirements have permitted little material reduction in output of California crude to prewar rates. During the year, a total of 327-760,000 bbl. of crude was produced, or 19 per cent of the total crude production within the United States during the same period, as compared with 310,996,000 bbl. or 18.4 per cent of the nation's crude production in 1944.

GLASS razor blades, glass chairs, and marble window panes attest that creative genius was still active in 1935. Many less striking, though doubtless more important, developments are to be recorded for the nonmetallic mineral industries, and not the least of them is the establishment of an Industrial Minerals Division in the A.I.M.E. under the able leadership of Samuel H. Dolbear, Chairman. Thus the nonmetallics are rightly granted equal dignity with metals and fuels in the category of mineral industries. The brief review of progress that follows merely touches the fringe of important developments in this broad field.

EVERY forward step in civilization brings with it an increase in population and increasing demand for raw materials. Modern civilization, because of its industrial development, depends more and more for its well-being on ample supplies of raw materials; the higher the type of that civilization, the greater its dependence. No fact is more obvious than that the raw materials should be put to use with greatest prudence and efficiency. National life is not a matter of a decade or a century. Conservation is no longer a matter for political discussion; it is a vital element in the future welfare of all nations. Unfortunately, to the minds of many, conservation means the locking up of natural resources, their arbitrary withdrawal, bringing about, in short, a condition of industrial stagnation. This has occurred in past centuries through misdirected governmental effort. Two eminent engineers have variously defined conservation as follows:

The end of the war in Europe and the Pacific failed to curb the upward trend of production in Venezuela,- which easily surpassed that of any previous year. The total production for 1945 amounted- to 323,369, 430 bbl., which was 26 per cent over the total for 1944, the previous peak in the history of the oil industry of the country. This increase was caused mainly by the greater demand for petroleum in the last stages of the war; the fact that the danger from enemy submarines had been overcome, which allowed all oil companies to use increased shipping facilities, and the fact that more materials were available for drilling operations. However, the materials supplied were by no means adequate and considerable credit is reflected on the Venezuelan petroleum industry for the increased production obtained by utilizing all available equipment to its fullest extent.
