METALLURGISTS and mill operators appreciate, in a general way, .the economic or commercial relationship between recovery and grade of product but few have correlated in detail fluctuating metal prices with the metallurgy. They know that many factors such as metal price, dedusiions for returning charge, transportation, percentage of metal in head ore, etc.; all affect the commercial relationship between recovery and grade of product. In practically every mill some one at some ' time has calculated the amount of recovery that can be sacrificed for each percentage increase in grade of concentrate and from this calculated ratio the commercial or ., economic tail has been established. Such a ratio finally becomes a well-entrenched rule by which the progress of the metallurgy is judged.. When once established, these-, ratios are but seldom corrected to changes of metal prices for each possible grade of concentrate that may be produced. The calculation is tedious when often repeated. Other methods have been suggested and used to correlate the commercial with the metallurgical phase. A factor .derived ,by multiplying the grade of concentrate by recovery is often used, but is of little importance because it does not possess a single commercial quantity. The percentage monetary recovery calculated by dividing the gross value of the ore into the net smelter return gives a good economic index and, is to be commended, but it is difficult to correlate exactly and quickly the work of each day on a commercial basis.

Therefore, we arc going to allocate the time to these different questions so that we will try to be finished by 4:30; from then until 5 o'clock, if any of you have any questions on subjects not related, you will be free to ask them. Mr. Morton and I have changed the order of the questions. Instead of what is now first, we have put No. 3 first, progress on basic-roof construction, inasmuch as we feel that it is quite important. At this time, H. S. Robertson, of Harbison-Walker, is going to give you a short talk, with slides, on what has been done to date on this subject.

Recent experimental evidence has shown that it is often incorrect to neglect the reactions occurring at an interface with respect to the diffusion reactions. By introducing reaction-rate constants and k for the transfer of components 1 and 2 between the a and b phases, a phenomenological description has been devised for the coupled processes of diffusion and in-terfacial reaction. An illustrative example has been analyzed with the aid of a suitable computer program. The results indicate that for kab values on the order of 10'1 cm per sec and Ð values of about 10¯10 sq cm per sec, the interfacial reactions are significant during the first 10 2 to l0 6 sec of a diffusion experiment. Among the observable effects of the interfacial reactions in this case appear to be the burying Kirkendall markers and an anomaly in the initial shifting of these markers. THE study of diffusion between two phases is especially important because of its direct connection to phase transformations. For example, the transformation of austenite to ferrite involves diffusion in the a and ý phases and also an interfacial reaction (trans formation) at the a/? interface. If ferrite and aus-tenite are the two members in a diffusion couple, the same two reactions occur during the diffusion process. The numerical values obtained for the diffusion coefficients and interfacial-reaction constants from diffusion experiments can then be employed to predict phase-transformation behavior. Refinement of the calculations of phase transformation is also suggested by the present method for treating two-phase diffusion. In the recent paper by Nolfi et al.' only the solute com ponent is considered in the interfacial reaction accompanying a phase transformation. The present analysis demonstrates that both components must be considered. It is generally recognized that reactions of some kind must occur at the interface in a two-phase diffusion couple, but usually it is assumed that the interface reaction occurs so rapidly that its effect on the overall process is unobservable because the slower diffusion process determines the kinetics of the process. However, Seith and Heumann 2 pointed out that effects of the interfacial reaction should always occur in the early stages of diffusion, and recently Eifert et al. 3 have shown that interfacial reactions influence the composition and motion of the interface in a/ß Al-Cu diffusion couples during the entire course of prolonged, high-temperature treatments. A general procedure for handling the combined processes of interfacial reaction and diffusion in a binary, two-phase system is to introduce kinetic coefficients for the interface reactions and to develop the system of equations governing the interlinked processes of diffusion and interface reaction. The resulting equations, although not amenable to solution in closed form, can be usefully manipulated by a digital computer. INTERFACIAL REACTIONS IN TWO-PHASE DIFFUSION Consider the general case of diffusion between two solid solutions, a and ß, which are adjacent phases in a binary system, Fig. 1. A larger, slow-speed, under-loaded ball mill and hydraulic classifier have almost doubled grinding efficiency at the lsabella mill. TENNESSEE Copper Co. operates two ore con-A centrators, the London and Isabella mills near Copperhill, Tenn. In 1948 and 1949 the small ball mills and rake classifiers in the London concentrator were replaced by one large ball mill and one hydraulic classifier. This new ball mill was designed oversize so that it could be operated at slower than normal speed. The proper operating conditions were established and the results published.' Later it was found that this mill operated more efficiently with a small ball charge." While this London grinding practice was being developed, the Isabella grinding circuit was not changed in any way. It remained a conventional two-stage rod mill—ball mill combination, the rod mill in open circuit and the ball mill in closed circuit with a rake classifier. Study of the data indicated that grinding cost could be lowered by converting to the London practice, but not enough would have been saved to warrant the expense of converting. No plan for improving this grinding operation could be developed. In 1953 this study was reopened when plans were made to increase the Isabella mill output from 1150 to 1500 tpd. At this time the grinding circuit consisted of a 6x12 rod mill followed by a 6x12 ball mill in closed circuit with a 6-ft rake classifier. Another 6x12 ball mill and 6-ft rake classifier would have been sufficient equipment and would have been the simplest and cheapest installation. However, this would have offered no improvement in grinding efficiency or operating cost. If, on the other hand, the grinding operation could be converted to the London practice, by installation of one large 101/2x9x9 tricone mill and a 10-ft hydroscillator,2 lower operating costs would justify the additional investment. Economics: Table I presents estimates for the two schemes for enlarging the Isabella mill. In the first scheme, column 1, one 6x12 ball mill and one 6-ft rake classifier were to be added. In the second scheme, column 2, the existing small ball mill and rake classifier were to be retired and one large mill and hydroscillator were to be installed. Estimated savings from the difference in operating costs made an attractive return on the additional investment for the large mill and hydroscillator. Actual costs of carrying out this plan are tabulated in column 3b. It will be seen that these costs follow the estimates in column 3a very Closely. The return on the additional investment is calculated from the difference in the operating cost in column 1 and the actual operating cost in column 3b. This too come very close to the estimate. Power and Steel: Power requirements and steel consumption for the rod mills and ball mills, both actual and estimated, are presented in Table 11.

PRIMARY products of the Josephtown smelter are zinc metal of various grades, lead-free zinc oxide pigments, cadmium metal, and sulphuric acid. Zinc concentrates of domestic and foreign origin are blended and desulphurized at the roaster plant. The equipment includes five, 12-hearth Herreshoff roasters and two modified Trail-type suspension roasters. The sulphur dioxide containing gases from the roasting operation are diverted to a four-unit contact acid plant for the manufacture of sulphuric acid. The roasted calcines are agglomerated by sintering on Dwight-Lloyd-type sintering machines; the sinter is crushed and sized within required limits; and the sized sinter is smelted in vertical shaft-type electro-thermic furnaces. Of the 13 electrothermic furnaces of various sizes now in operation, four are designed to produce American process zinc oxidc of various specifications; and the remaining nine furnaces are equipped with vacuum-type condensers and produce zinc metal. Papers describing the general smelting practice at Josephtown have been published by AIME. Since both High Grade zinc metal and lead-free zinc oxide pigments are produced direct from the electrothermic furnaces without need for subsequent refining, the elimination of impurities such as lead and cadmium has to be accomplished during roasting and sintering operations. To effect the producing of both High Grade and Prime Western zinc products, the roasting and sintering operations are on two separate circuits. A High Grade circuit produces finished sized sinter low in lead, cadmium, etc., for the High Grade furnaces; and the Prime Western circuit produces finished sinter destined for the furnaces producing Prime Western metal. Sintering at the Josephtown smelter differs in many important respects from the sintering practice in smelters operating horizontal retort zinc furnaces. Requirements of the electrothermic smelting furnaces define the physical characteristics of the sinter, while the chemical composition of the sinter is controlled according to the grade of metal and oxide to be made as final products. Three principal objectives in the sintering process at Josephtown smelter are: 1. To transform the zinc calcine from the roasting operations into a hard, yet porous agglomerate that will not crumble in the smelting furnace. 2. Crushing and sizing of the sinter to obtain a proper screen analysis which is normally —% in. down to +1/4 in. particle size. 3. To eliminate, particularly in the High Grade circuit, as much of the impurities such as sulphur, lead, and cadmium as possible. The sintering plant as originally built in 1930 was equipped with three standard 42 in. x 44 ft Dwight-Lloyd sintering machines. Each machine was equipped with a 15x60 in. sintering corporation fan driven by 150 hp, 900 rpm synchronous motor through a magnetic clutch and capable of delivering 30,000 cfm of air at 15 in. of water and 150°F. Each sintering machine was driven by 7½ hp dc motor with controllers for varying the speed of the machine from 8 to 32 in. per min. The pallets were cast iron and the grates of the herringbone type. The charge was mixed in a 4 ft diam x 8 ft Stehli pugmill and transported by belt conveyor, elevator and tripper conveyor to a small bin over each machine. Shortly after the start of operations the following changes were found necessary: 1. The herringbone grates which plugged very quickly and were difficult to keep clean were replaced by straight, narrow cast-iron grate bars running at right angles to the travel of the pallets. These grate bars are held in place by a center bar extending across the pallet on the 24 in. dimension and by removable retaining plates which form the sides of the pallets. 2. Mechanical grate knockers were developed in conjunction with new grate bars for continuously and automatically cleaning the grates. 3. As the cast-iron pallets cracked, they were replaced with cast-steel pallets. In 1938, the capacity of the sinter plant was increased with the installation of two 42 in. x 22 ft machines which were brought from the company's Herculaneum lead smelter. With a circulating load of some 250 to 300 pct, production of finished sinter on the 42 in. x 44 ft machines at this time amounted to about three tons of sized sinter per machine hour. In 1945, one of the 42 in. x 22 ft machines was replaced by a 60 in. x 44 ft machine of our own design. In 1948, as part of the plant-wide expansion program, the sinter plant not only was expanded but also divided into two separate plants; namely, Prime Western and High Grade circuits. The sinter destined for furnaces producing Prime Western zinc metal is made in a new plant comprising two 60 in. x 44 ft Dwight-Lloyd-type sintering machines, each having a 45,000 cfm Sturtevant fan at 18 in. water static pressure and served by an 8 ft diam x 12 ft long rotary charge pclletizer and auxiliary crushing and sizing equipment. The sinter destined for furnaces producing High Grade zinc metal and zinc oxide pigments is produced in the old sinter plant which was expanded to accommodate four of the 60 in. x 44 ft sintering machines, replacing the old sintering units. In the High Grade sinter circuit, two units of the 60 in. x 44 ft machines are used as preliminary soft sinter machines; and the remaining two units of the 60 in. x 44 ft machines are used to make finished hard sinter. Purification Theory Partial elimination of lead and cadmium in the sintering of zinc ores is common knowledge. However, by some manipulation and by taking advantage of the double circuit, it is possible to make zinc sinter which is nearly free of contaminators. Lead

Safety work in mining at the Andes Copper Mining Company, Potrerillos, Chile, is divided into three parts: (1) accident prevention, (2) fire prevention and protection, and (3) silicosis prevention and control. In the company's operations a steady campaign has been waged to reduce accidents and silicosis, and to prevent fires. In the following pages the safety record for the past twelve years will be examined and the methods explained by which the accident rate was reduced. Table 1 contains yearly data pertaining to the scale of the mining operations and the accident record. Block caving is used for all ore production and the tonnage mined has averaged 30,000 short tons per day for the past seven years. Table 2 classifies 44 fatal accidents which have occurred since 1935. The leading causes of accidental death are transportation of ore and use of explosives, followed in order by persons falling, falls of ground, and by asphyxiation. In the case of serious accidents, however, the greatest cause is falls of ground, followed, in turn, by ore transportation, persons falling, explosives, and asphyxiation. Accident Prevention The improvement of the safety record was obtained by a combination of many factors. In surveying the results at Andes for the past twelve years, it is possible to select some features of the present operation which have contributed to the accident record. The most important of these are: (1) good staff planning, (2) good equipment, (3) an alert safety organization, and (4) education and selection of the workmen. GOOD STAFF PLANNING As a result of good staff planning, the mine has good working conditions, namely, good ventilation, moderate temperatures and humidity, and good lighting. These factors not only reduce accidents but also improve efficiency. In haulage work, accidents have been reduced by having traffic move in a forward direction only. The latter makes possible a one-man train crew. Trains are centrally dispatched from loading drifts which are interconnected by signal lights, so that when a train in a lateral drift is given permission to move into a main line drift, a red light signals in all other lateral drifts in that area. Good track is maintained, and safety niches are required at all switch throws. Since safety niches were provided there have been no fatal or serious accidents at such points. All main line haulage drifts are illuminated by electric lights. Haulage drifts are kept clean. Adequate clearance has been provided between cars and between cars and the sides of the haulage drifts. The 4 1/2 ton Cranby type cars are equipped with roller bearings, and the 10 ton loconlotives with trolley shoes instead of wheels. These two features are responsible for improved ore haulage conditions and contribute to greater efficiency and safety.

Orientation relationships and rates of annealing of 97 pct cold rolled zirconium have been studied by X-ray techniques, metallography, and by hardness measurements. The process of annealing occurring by the formation of domains, and their subsequent growth without recrystallization, is demonstrated. NUMEROUS investigators1-' have revealed sub-grain formation after annealing cold worked metal single crystals and have generally described the results in terms of a dislocation mechanism of polygonization.5,6 in heavily cold rolled polycrystal-line aluminum the first stages of heating cause an apparently spontaneous subdivision of regions of the deformed matrix into a great number of slightly disoriented domains followed or accompanied by rapid growth of certain domains to form a recrystallization texture.7,8 In the present investigation the isothermal rate of annealing of cold worked polycrystalline zirconium has been studied by X-ray techniques, metallography, and by hardness measurement. It will be shown that, rather than by the usual nucleation and growth mechanism,"12 the process of annealing can best be explained by the formation of domains early in the annealing treatment and the subsequent growth of these domains without recrystallization. Experimental Procedure All the experimental work was performed on an arc-melted ingot of high purity zirconium crystal bar made by Westinghouse in a production scale deBoer unit. The weight percentage of impurities in the zirconium were as follows: C, 0.04; Fe, 0.05; Hf, 0.014; W, 0.01; Ti, Ni, and Al, 0.003; Si and N, 0.002; Cr and Cu, 0.001. Metallographically the zirconium showed only a single phase. The 4 in. diarn ingot was forged at 760°C to a 1 1/2x3 in. plate and was then rolled at 760°C to 0.150 in. thickness and annealed at this temperature for 20 min to produce an equiaxed grain structure of about 0.1 mm average grain diameter. The hot rolled plate was roller-leveled, surface ground to 0.135 in., cold rolled 83 pct reduction in thickness on a two-high mill, and then to a total reduction of 97 pct on a Sendzimir mill. The 0.004 in. strip material so produced received no subsequent mechanical treatment. Specimens % in. square were sheared from the rolled strip and isothermally annealed at 104 mm Hg in an all glass vacuum system equipped with a Vycor furnace tube. The temperature data presented are the average temperatures during the runs and did not vary more than about k3"C. X-ray Diffraction Methods: When zirconium is drastically cold rolled, a high degree of preferred orientation results in which prism poles, {1010}, are perpendicular to the rolling direction. W. J. Parton—Those operators faced with the problem of treating fine coal whether in bituminous or anthracite will find this paper most timely. I would like to take this opportunity of discussing Mr. Schiffman's paper and at the same time express certain views relating to our Tamaqua plant. I would like to ask the author what type of impeller and diffuser is used in the Denver cells? Screen analysis of products from individual cells indicate that coarser material resists flotation and only floats after greater retention time in the last few cells. Also, the need for a scavenger screen to reclaim non-floated coal particles further stresses this point. I have always felt that more efficient means of cleaning coal between 10-mesh and 28-mesh existed than flotation. Reagent and power costs are high for the flotation process. When floating +28-mesh particles, cell capacity is lowered and some of the particles are lost with the refuse. The Tamaqua plant of the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co. floats —28-mesh coal and capacity of recoverable coal is 40 tph for 1800 cu ft of Denver cells; or 0.05 tons per cu ft of cell. At Kimberly 7.75 tph for 600 cu ft of cell gives 0.013 ton per cu ft of cell. At Bessie 14 tph for 800 cu ft of cell gives 0.017 tons per cu ft of cell. It would be appreciated if the author would comment on what he feels is the upper size limit of particle to attain most efficient utilization of the flotation process. The dewatering screw is a very interesting development since it offers a simple way to prepare coal sludge for more complete clewatering by drainage or mechanical dewatering on screen or filters. In other words it could be used to accomplish the same thing as a thickener tank. I would appreciate having the author's comment on how he thinks such a screw dewaterer would work on a froth.* The process as used in floating coal at the Bessie and Kimberly plants may be referred to as more of a bulk oil float in contrast to a froth flotation process. Experiments on increasing capacity of cells is most interesting since we are going through such an experi- mental period at the present time. Recently a double overflow was installed on our No. 30 Denver cells. So far results are not conclusive. In reviewing this paper the following comments are made pertaining to investigation of methods for increasing capacity: Supercharging: Supercharged air in matte flotation or for that matter the use of the normal amount of air drawn in by the impeller would in all probability cause such an aeration in the cell as to destroy the buoyant effect given to the coal particles by the excessive amount of kerosine used. In other words, air creates an agitation zone throughout the cell, creating a boiling and thereby giving a lower recovery in the cell. It would be interesting to know whether the 7 pct increase in recovery was with no air being admitted to the stand pipe. Changing Impeller Speed: The speed of a receded disc impeller for a No. 30 cell as recommended by the Denver Equipment Co. is, I believe, approximately 250 rpm. At this speed and using supercharged air in excess of 8-oz pressure, we have observed a boiling action in the cells. In our flotation we endeavor to obtain some degree of froth flotation using pine oil as a frother. The boiling action as caused by increasing the amount of air added to the cells is detrimental to recovery in froth flotation. It is our belief that to obtain increased recovery from a cell in froth flotation, additional air must be introduced but at the same time this air must be dispersed throughout the pulp in the form of small bubbles and this can only be done by increasing the speed of the impeller. Therefore, if Mr. Schiffman decreased the speed of the No. 30 impellers and at the same time continued to use supercharged air, the boiling action may have been increased because larger bubbles developed. The lower recovery as reported could be due to this factor. Decreasing the impeller speed will definitely decrease the power consumed but may have other disadvantages. First, we believe it will permit "sanding" in the cell and this in our opinion will increase the wear on the impeller and diffuser, especially so, if there is pyrite and/or sand present in the feed. "Sanding" in the cell when air is used, as in froth flotation, will effect the dispersion of this air and cause boiling.

was investigated by reacting thin discs of calcium oxide with gas mixtures of CO2, CO, and Son. Its value was 19,300 * 300 cal independent of temperature in this range. No solid solubility of sulfur in calcium oxide was detected within the limits of the experimental method and it is estimated to be below 0.025 pct by weight. The importance of lime in desulfurization is well-established but complete information on the pure phase equilibrium: CaO + 1/2 s2 = CaS + +02 [11 is not yet available. The goal of this work was to evaluate solid solubility of CaS in CaO and to determine the free-energy change associated with Reaction [I] at temperatures of 1400" to 1650°C. The equilibrium constant for Reaction [1] can be written: It is convenient to rewrite Eq. [2] in the form: where A = {Ps /PqJ1'2 has been referred to' as the "sulfurizing power' of a gas mixture. In this work, thin discs of CaO were suspended in a vertical tube furnace and exposed to CO + CO2 + SOz gas mixtures having known values of A. The samples were then analyzed for sulfur. As expected, X-ray diffraction confirmed that CaS was the only sulfur-bearing phase formed at the relatively low oxygen pressures used. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Reagent-grade CaCO3 was pressed in a 3/8-in.-diam pill die and prefired in air to produce CaO discs weighing between 0.004 and 0.01 g. Several discs were used to provide a suitable weight for chemical analysis while maintaining a large surface area to react with gas mixtures. These were placed in a platinum mesh basket and suspended in the gas stream in the hot zone of a vertical tube furnace. Desired gas mixtures were prepared from cp grade CO and CO2 and anhydrous grade SO2. The method of soap bubble displacement was used to calibrate capillary flow meters. While this gave excellent results with CO and Con, some problems with bubble insta- bility and soap film "drag" arose with the use of SO2 at low flow rates. Hence, frequent sampling and analysis of gas mixtures was carried out to insure proper control of the ingoing SOZ. The furnace used for gas:solid equilibration was a vertical mullite tube externally wound with 60 pct Pt-40 pct Rh wire having a diameter of 0.028 in. An inner tube of $ in. ID served as the reaction chamber having Pyrex ground joints sealed to the mullite to provide gas-tight connections at top and bottom. A Pt-Pt 10 pct Rh thermocouple was inserted into a protection tube adjacent to the sample basket to measure sample temperature during a run. Constant-temperature control to 2C was observed at any desired set point within the range of this investigation. This was accomplished by a control thermocouple imbedded in the furnace windings which served to actuate an electronic controller wired for high-low operation. The sulfur analyses of the solid samples were carried out using a stoichiometric combustion technique based on the method of Fincham and Richardson. Some analyses were done using a modified evolution method3 but these were used primarily to check the results of the combustion method. The results were in good agreement but the combustion technique of-ferred an advantage in economy of time and material. CALCULATION OF GAS EQUILIBRIA Heating a given mixture of CO + CO + SO2 to high temperatures gives rise to a large number of product species. The details of calculating the partial pressures of these products of interaction and dissociation can be found in several references4,5 and need not be repeated here. The thermodynamic data selected for the major species in the gas mixtures are shown in Table I. Equilibrium constants from these reactions were combined with oxygen, carbon, and sulfur balances and a computer program written to facilitate the calculations. Some early difficulties in reproducing experimental results were finally traced to the effect of atmospheric pressure changes. No reference to consideration of this question had been found in the

THE occurrence of such a large amount of gold in the Hartsel granite, even though the surmised existence of similar areas is not new, brings freshly to mind the pegmatite type of magmatic differentiation lately brought again to attention by occurrences at Silver Peak, Nev., described by Spurr; and in Alaska, described by both Spurr and Brooks. In both localities graunitic rocks or dikes are thought to pass into metalliferous quartz-veins. An interesting association in this connection is the occurrence of diamonds in residual pegmatitic clay of San Juao de Chapado, Brazil, described by Derby :1 (P. 142) "Bodies of pegmatite are quite common in the older rocks of Brazil, both in the. diamond regions and elsewhere, occurring not only in the gneiss and granite, but in the schistose series as well. Those that have been examined are dike-like in their mode of occurrence and granitic in composition." (P. 143) "The question of the eruptive or secretionary origin of pegmatites has long been a subject of discussion among geologists. . . . The recent studies . . . seem to have clearly established that most if not all of them are essentially eruptive masses, though possibly modified in some way by aqueous agencies. Even before becoming acquainted with the literature of the subject this view had seemed to me to be the only acceptable one as regards the typical pegmatites of Brazil." What is pegmatite ? J. F. Kemp says ". . . veins or dikes-it is an open question which is the more correct term-are met formed of very coarsely crystalline aggregates of the same minerals that constitute granite. These are called pegmatite and in them is the home of graphic granite, the curious intergrowth of quartz and feldspar, such that a cross fracture of the blades of quartz suggests cuneiform characters. . . . In regard to the larger veins or dikes it seems improbable that true igneous fusion could have afforded such coarsely crystalline aggregates, and so we are forced to assume such abundance of steam and other vapors, i.e, mineralizers, as to almost, if not quite, imply solution."

A Discussion of the paper by Mr. James P. Roe which was read at the Washington meeting, May, 1905. MR. C. EDWARD STAFFORD, Chester, Pa.:-During all my business life, I have been engaged in the manufacture of Bessemer and open-hearth steels, but, during my long connection with the Shoenberger Steel Co. of Pittsburg, I had some experience in the manufacture of high-grade puddled iron for horse-shoes and in the making by Dr. Otto Wuth's process extremely pure low phosphorus puddled blooms (analyzing from 0.005 to 0.01 per cent. of phosphorus and sulphur), which were melted with low-phosphorus pig-iron in acid open-hearth furnaces to make extra locomotive fire-box steel. I have also seen the Dank's puddlers in operation at different times and places, notably where they were most successful, at the Otis Steel Works, Cleveland, Ohio; then under the management of our friend, Mr. S. T. Wellman. These Dank's blooms were made solely for open-hearth melting-stock to which they were well adapted ; the unavoidable presence of bits of ore-fix imbedded in the mass of the, metal always prevents the profitable manufacture of merchant iron from Dank's blooms. With the experience just described, I was to some degree in position to value fairly the means, methods and results of Mr. Roe's mechanical puddling from the metallurgical or technical and economic points of view, when given an opportunity by Mr. Roe to see his puddling furnace or machine in operation in Pottstown, Pa. Briefly, the furnace, with water-cooled bottom, is rectangular in plan, about 20 by 8 ft. in the clear, suspended by trunnions at the middle of the long sides, at a. height of 17 or 18 ft. above the general level; the oscillation (65° each way from the vertical) is accomplished by geared segments (attached to the downward-projecting side or trunnion-plates) with which engage pinions driven by a reversing engine. Since 1950, several papers have been published which have described various methods for studying mobility ratio effects. The methods which have been described for studying mobility ratio effects include X-ray shadowgraph techniques, stepwise potentiometric model procedures, stepwise numerical procedures, gelatin model studies and fluid mapper model studies. The purpose of this paper is to describe a procedure for using a resistance network for studying mobility effects. DESCRIPTION OF APPARATUS The basic unit of the experimental model consisted of a network of 840 resistors fastened to a sheet of black Lucite which was mounted on a wooden frame, Fig. 1. The dimensions of the Lucite sheet were 36 X 36 in. The resistors were fastened to the Lucite sheet at mesh points by means of snaps. The mesh points were arranged in a square pattern, 30 X 30 in., spaced at intervals of l1/2 in. The snap fasteners permitted several resistors to be "stacked" in parallel. By adding additional resistors to the basic unit, the specific resistance on each side of the flood front could be varied. The square network of resistors represented one of four symmetrical elements of a five-spot well pattern. The current input was analogous to an injection well and the current output was analogous to a production well." The power supply was essentially a full wave transformer-rectifier system for converting alternating-current into direct-current. The DC voltage could be varied from 41.43 to 290 v in steps of 41.43 v by selecting the proper outlet jacks. The major components of the power supply were: a Triro power transformer, R 11-A; a dual 5Y3 vacuum tube; two gas filled OD-3 tubes; and a Triplett voltmeter, model 227-1, range 0 to 500 DC v. The critical resolved shear stress and the strain rate dependence of the .flow stress are reported for Ag base A1 single crystals up to 6 at. pct A1 over a temperature ralzge of 4.1° to 470°K. At room temperature the solid solution strengthening is attributed brinciballv to an increase in the dislocation density on alloying. At 42°K the alloys are relatively stronger because the dislocations widen on alloying and are more difficult to cut. In a previous paper, the authors reported the characteristics of strain aging in Ag base A1 alloys.' The variation of the magnitude of the strain-aging yield drops on aging time, aluminum content, and testing temperature strongly indicated that the phenomenon is due to the Suzuki mechanism. In the present paper, the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) and the strain rate dependence of the flow stress are reported for Ag base A1 single crystals as functions of testing temperature (4.2" to 470") and A1 content (0 to 6 at. pct). Observations on the substructure and measurements of the effect of crystal growth rate are also given. The experimental re- sults appear explainable considering that aluminum additions increase the dislocation density and dislocation width. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The methods of specimen preparation and tensile testing were described previously.' Briefly, single crystals were grown from the melt in a vacuum (1 x lom5 mm Hg), shaped into tensile samples by a combination of abrading and acid etching, annealed at 850°C in a vacuum (1 x 10" mm &Z) for several days, and furnace cooled to 200'. The testing was done on a model TM Instron using friction grips and a strain rate of about 5 x 106 per sec unless otherwise noted. The various testing temperatures were obtained by immersing the specimens in the following media: 1) 4.2': liquid helium using the apparatus of G. Byrne;' 2) 77°K: liquid nitrogen; 3) 200"K: dry ice and acetone; 4) 415' K: ethylene glycol; 5) 460' \ to 480' : molten Stanalax. In the determination of the CRSS above 296' K, a ratio method was used; the crystals were strained initially at the higher temperature, 0.1 pct shear strain, and then tested at 296' . The ratio of the flow stress between the two temperatures was then multiplied by the average CRSS at 296' K to obtain the value of the CRSS at the high temperature. (The test at 296' showed a yield point resulting from strain aging; the flow stress at 296' K was taken as the lower yield stress.) Investigations of the Zr-Pt system, by metallography, incipient melting, and X-ray diffraction, determined the phase relationshifis from 0 to 50 at. pct Pt. Phase fields in the Pt-~ich region were outlined, and three intermetallics (ZrPt, Zr2Pt, and ZrPtd were located. A eutectic between Zr and Zr2Pt, and a eutectoid veaction between Zr and a Zr + Zr2Pt, were established. The maximum solubility of Pt in P Zr was approximately 13.5 wt pct, as opposed to less than 1 wt pct solubility in a Zr. EARLIER work on the Zr-Pt system was limited to an X-ray study on the intermetallic compound, ZrPt3, by H. J. Wallbaum,1 It was reported that ZrPt3 existed at 86.52 wt pct Pt, and had a hexagonal structure, isomorphous with TiNi3. Wallbaum's data revealed the following structural particulars: a = 5.633A, c = 9.21A, and c/a = 1.635A. Other studies allied to Zr-Pt alloys concerned only 1) Pt-rich alloys (0.05 to 5.0 pct Zr) for corrosion resistance,2 2) a Zr-base alloy with 5 pct Pt and 0.124 pct C for oxidation resistance,3 and 3) electroclad-ding of Zr with Pt for in-pile corrosion resistance of Zr to uranyl sulphate. 4 Metallographic, incipient melting, and X-ray diffraction techniques were applied to accurately resolve the phase relationships in the 0 to 50 at. pct (68.2 wt pct) Pt region, and to outline the phase fields in the Pt-rich area. Three intermediate phases: Zr2Pt, ZrPt, and ZrPt3, were also established by the same methods. PROCEDURE Melting stock for this program was of the highest purity obtainable. The Zr was iodide crystal bar with a low hafnium content of about 0.05 wt pct (Westinghouse "Grade 3"). The as-received Zr was treated to remove the surface film of corrosion product that resulted from a standard autoclave grade designation test. Next, the bars were processed to yield material suitable for arc melting and free of contaminants. Sheet platinum metal (Baker and Co. "Grade 2") was used for alloying additions. This material con-

THE rates of growth of the carbide phases MC and M2C in the Ta-C and Cb-C systems have been measured at various temperatures and the results used to estimate the rate of carbon diffusion within the inter metallic phases. Sheets of high-purity tantalum (50 ppm Cb, <25 ppm Ti, 10 ppm Fe, 5 ppm Cr, <50 ppm Mo, W, and all other metals, 15-75 ppm O2, 10-30 ppm N2, and 10-30 ppm C) approximately 1/4 by 1/2 by 0.020 in. were heated to temperatures between 1800" and 2700°C in a carbon resistor furnace under an atmosphere of argon plus sufficient methane to maintain an excess of carbon at the sample surface. The thicknesses of the carbide layers, illustrated in Fig. 1, were measured with a filar micrometer and plotted logarithmically as a function of time. Fig. 2 is a typical plot for the TaC phase. The points may be represented within experimental error by lines with slope equal to 1/2; therefore the growth of the layers may be described by the usual expression X = kt1/2, where X is the layer thickness, t is the time, and k is a temperature-dependent constant. From these data and compositions at the phase boundaries, it is possible to estimate values for the diffusion coefficients of carbon in each phase, assuming that layer growth occurs by carbon diffusion alone, and that the dif-fusivity is not a function of composition within each

Diffusion between gold and indium at two temperatures below the melting point of indium (155.4oC) was investigated. The major, component of the diffusion zone was determined to be AuIn2; the other, intermediate phases in the system occur in much narrower layers In order of decreasing layer width these are: Au9In4, AuIn, Au4In. Inter diffusion coefficients of the four intermediate phases and the terminal solid solutions lie in the range of 2.4 x 10-l3 to 1.8 x 10-11 sq cm per sec. WHEN two metals which do not form a continuous series of solid solutions interdiffuse, each phase in equilibrium at the diffusion temperature should appear as a separate layer in the diffusion zone. In the Au-In system, diffusion plays a significant part in many commercial applications, particularly where indium alloys are used as solders for electrical contacts with very fine gold wire, for estab- lishing electrical contact to thin metallic films, and for mounting metal-coated piezoelectric crystals. A knowledge of the number, extent, and type of phases which form at diffusion temperatures below the melting point of indium, 155.4oC,1 and the diffusion constants for the system would be useful for these practical applications. Of more basic significance, additional information on polyphase diffusion in a system not previously investigated would be gained. The phase relationships in the Au-In system were determined primarily by Kubaschewski and Weibke1 and are based on thermal, microscopic, and X-ray analysis, Fig. 1. There are five intermediate phases in the system having approximate compositions corresponding to the formulas: Au4ln (ß)—80.0 at. pet Au; Au3In (?)— 75.0 at. pet Au; Au9In4 (d)—69.2 at. pet Au; AuIn—50.0 at. pet Au; AuIn2—33.3 at. pet Au. Solid solubility of indium in gold at 700°C is reported as 12.64 at. pet and at 406°C as 10.36 at. pet. No solid solubility of gold in indium is reported.

I. INTRODUCTION THE smelting plant of the British Columbia Copper Co. at Greenwood, B. C., now closed because of the decline in the price of copper due to the European war, is of special interest to metallurgists for several reasons. It was successfully smelting in blast furnaces the lowest grade copper ore of all plants in America. In order to do so, it had to run at&apos; very high efficiency, which necessarily required a large tonnage per square foot of hearth area, together with the minimum amount of labor and other costs. The furnaces smelted daily 2,250 tons of ore (6.62 tons per sq. ft. of hearth area), carrying 0.85 per cent. of copper, at a smelting cost of $1.18 per ton. The entire plant required 130 men to operate it and keep up repairs, showing a labor efficiency of about 17.5 tons per man per day. In the present paper, the method of obtaining these results is shown. Most of the information contained in this description I obtained as Assistant Superintendent, during the two years preceding the present shutdown. AN OIL and gas mining lease contract, as entered A into by and between &apos;the lessor and the lessee, contains certain express covenants stipulating, in part at least, the exact performance thereof; it also contains certain implied covenants, among which may be included that of protection of the leased premises against drainage by the drilling of necessary offset wells. In the drilling for, and production of, oil and gas, however, it not infrequently happens that the lessee, acting in good faith, does not deem it prudent to, drill a test thereon even though the location for such test is offset by a producing well on an adjoining lease. Such conclusion, on the part of the lessee, is generally construed by the lessor as constituting a breach of the implied covenant mentioned above, and he may take proper action to secure satisfaction therefor. The action against the lessee is generally for cancellation or relinquishment of the lease, together with, or apart from, claims for damages allegedly sustained through failure to properly protect against drainage of the leased premises.

X-ray Lattice parameter and bulk density measurements were made at room temperature on solid solutions of nitrogen in purified a, iron, containing from 0 to 0.053 wt pct N. When nitrogen is dissolved in a, iron, the fractional increase in unit cell volume (X-ray diffraction) and the fractional increase in volume per gram of iron (bulk density measurement) are the same within experimental error. The two sets of results when averaged show that the unit cell edge of a, iron increases linearly by 3.2 X 10-2 A per wt pct N dissolved and that the partial gram-atomic volume of nitrogen at infinite dilution in a, iron is the same as it is in nitrogen-martensite, that is, 5.90 cm3. RECENT reviews17&apos; of literature dealing with the lattice parameter of ferritic iron-nitrogen alloys indicate that the dilating effect of dissolved nitrogen on the bcc unit cell of a iron is not known with confidence. Five investigations3-7 either revealed no effect of nitrogen or were inconclusive. Among other investigations, where quantitative data were obtained, the results of Osawa and Iwaizumi8 indicate too large an effect, and those of Eisenhut and Kaupp9 show the lattice parameter of ferrite varying with the nitrogen content at concentrations far beyond the known solubility limit. It is not clear in Burns&apos;10 data what value should be used for the lattice parameter of nitrogen-free ferrite in calculating the dilation. Burdese11 shares with Burns the shortcoming that the iron-nitrogen alloys were solution-treated and quenched with undissolved nitride present. The consequence is that the un- certainties in the solubility limit1 are added to those in the lattice parameter measurements when the variation of lattice parameter with nitrogen content is computed. For a system of such widespread interest, we felt that a new investigation was merited. Both X-ray diffraction and bulk density measurements were used to determine the dilation of the , a iron lattice by dissolved nitrogen. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Material. The bulk density and X-ray diffraction experiments were both made with specimens of a purified iron (denoted as "B iron")- from Battelle Memorial Institute. The impurity contents were as follows: As, C, Cu and Pb—50 ppm; Ag, Al, Co, Ga, 0, Ti-11 to 50 ppm; B, Be, Ca, Cd, Cr, Mg, Mn, Mo, N, Ni, S, Sb, Si, Sn, V, W-10 ppm or less. The vacuum-cast ingot was hot-forged and annealed. Pieces of the forged stock were machined and cold-rolled to give strip stock 0.08 and 0.002 in. thick for density and for X-ray measurements, respectively. Preparation of Specimens. Starting with a piece of the cold-rolled iron stock, the general sequence of operations, after an initial recrystallizing anneal, was to measure the density or lattice parameter, nitrogenize, remeasure the property, age or denitrogenize, and again measure the property. Duplicate analyses for nitrogen were made by a modified Kjeldahl method on portions of the actual density specimens and on pieces nitrogenized to equilibrium alongside the X-ray specimens. Annealing of the density specimens was performed by sealing the pieces with the as-rolled surfaces removed by filing into evacuated "Vycor" capsules and treating for 1 hr at 750°C followed by furnace cooling.
