Jack Gerard reinforced the upbeat mood at MIN-Expo. He praised Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn for his support of the mining industry, the state’s largest manufacturing sector. Gerard is the president and chief executive officer of the National Mining Association, the sponsor of MINExpo 2004.

Quartz veins from the Martha Hill epithermal gold-silver deposit, Waihi, commonly exhibit crustiform banded textures. Visual differences observed between bands are primarily the result of a 1 to 1500 ¦m variation in quartz grain size. Quartz band textures are dominated by anhedral interlocking quartz mosaics, commonly associated with minor adularia and sulphide phases; these textures are interpreted to be products of amorphous silica crystallisation. The occurrence of rhombic adularia suggests that prolonged boiling influenced parent fluids. In contrast, the presence of coarsely crystalline bands, made up of subhedral to euhedral quartz grains, infers primary crystal growth from solution; evidenced by the occurrence of growth-zoned quartz within these bands. There is a narrow range of 3.3ë in d18Oquartz between maximum and minimum isotopic values for the deposit. Significant overlap in d18Oquartz values are observed between the Martha and Welcome lodes. However, statistically significant and commonly systematic differences do occur between individual bands analysed in most samples. Temperature fluctuations may be the dominant factor responsible for observed inter-band variation.

Despite the dramatic initial growth and success of their Ikhwezi Colliery near Delmas, Mpumalanga, Kuyasa?s experiences offer some sobering arguments for significant changes to mineral rights ownership, the attitude of financial institutions and government policy if South Africa is to have a dynamic and successful junior and small-scale mining sector.

A large and increasing data base of apatite fission track results from sedimentary and granitic rocks exposed within the south-eastern highlands and along the continental margin ofAustralia provides constraints for the tectonic development of the south-eastern passive margin. The fission track results suggest that many regions of the south-eastern margin of Australia experienced distinct episodes of relatively rapid cooling during the middle Cretaceous to early Tertiary that can be attributed to the effects of rifting. One cooling episode is middle Cretaceous in age and related to denudation of the south eastern highlands from Tasmania to northern New South Wales between ~90 - 100 Ma. Rocks exposed along the present coast line record a later episode of rapid cooling, which is diachronous and decreases in age northward from ~80 to 90 Ma in northern Tasmania to southern New South Wales, ~60 - 80 Ma in central and northern New South Wales, and to ~50 - 60 Ma in southern Queensland. The results are consistent with models suggesting that underplating occurred inward of the rift along the eastern margin of Australia as a result of the onset of continental extension in the Tasman Sea at ~96 Ma. This resulted in a significant change in base level and km-scale denudation of much of the southeastern highlands. Subsequently, as breakup commenced during the Late Cretaceous at ~80 Ma and continued into the Paleocene at ~60 Ma, the second stage of cooling was imprinted on the rocks along the margin. This cooling is probably due to the relaxation of elevated geothermal gradients associated with rifting as well as some denudation. Because rifting was oblique to the present-day coast, different regions record different ages of cooling associated with the rift. The southern regions of New South Wales and Victoria yield ages associated with earlier rifting while regions of northern New South Wales and southern Queensland give ages associated with later rifting.

AFTER a series of experiments covering a period of about three years, ending from the spring of 19iJ.2 to the spring of 1915, a 2,000-ton leaching plant for the treatment of the accumulated copper concentrator tailing was built and put into operation. During the experimental period, the first step was that of laboratory experiments or beaker leaches. MinerSIM is an augmented reality system with integrated hypermedia that is suitable for training underground miners in the basics of using a jackleg drill to install rock bolts. While statistical evidence shows that rock bolting with such a drill has an inherent level of risk, it is conjectured that this can be mediated with adequate safety training outside of the actual mine environment using a variety of educational media including interactive three-dimensional images, games, animations, and videos to describe the mechanics of rock bolting and its principles. Ultimately, trainees will install rock bolts in an immersive environment mixed with real and virtual images generated via a gaming graphics engine. This paper will discuss considerations, implementation issues, and evaluation methodologies of the MinerSIM system.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an alternative electrochemical process for the production of calcium metal. The current industrial practice is costly, complex, and inefficient. The Bureau method involved electrowinning of a calcium-tin alloy followed by electrorefining to produce calcium metal. In the electrowinning cell, CaCI2 was fed to a KCI2-CaCI2 electrolyte. The calcium was electrowon at 6500 C into the pure molten tin cathode until the cathode contained 7.5 wt pct Ca. Current efficiency for electrowinning averaged over 90 pct. The resulting calcium-tin alloy served as the anode for the electrorefming cell, which employed a [CaC~-CaF2] fused salt as the electrolyte. Calcium metal was electrorefmed at 8500 C with a current efficiency of 85 pct based on calcium metal recovered. The calcium metal analyzed 99.2 pct, which is purer than commercially produced calcium.

"INTRODUCTION Although galena is the most common lead-bearing mineral, is easily concentrated by gravity methods, and is readily susceptible to flotation, nevertheless some galena-bearing orebodies have within them small deposits of lead ore that fail to give a high recovery when treated by the customary milling methods.The secondary minerals, cerussite and anglesite, which result from natural oxidation of galena, cause losses when the customary method of lead-ore concentration is practiced. The identification of oxidized lead-ore minerals and the efficient concentration of a lead ore taken from the oxidized portion of an orebody which has previously yielded poor recoveries mere the objects of a recent investigation. Thus the ore examined was selected from a large orebody. The work was undertaken at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo.DESCRIPTION OF OREThe ore was of a brownish color owing to oxidation of some of the iron minerals to limonite. The lead content was 6.80 percent, and a cursory examination showed that most of the lead was present as galena. Small amounts of sphalerite, siderite, and pyrite were readily identified. The chief gangue mineral was dolomite, accompanied by smaller amounts of calcite and glauconite."

The resultant load vector is the representation of the forces applied to a longwall roof support element by caving strata into a single, quantifiable measure of support resistance. The relatively complex kinematics of the shield support prohibit a determination of support resistance simply by summation of leg forces. A method is being investigated by the Bureau of Nines to determine the resultant load vector by instrumenting supports with pressure transducers and strain gages to measure leg, canopy capsule, and lemnisoate link forces. This concept has been laboratory tested in the Bureau's Nine Roof Simulator. Functional relationships among variables have been assessed, and confidence intervals have been established for prediction of the resultant load vector parameters.

This report includes a short history of uranium and its uses, mineralogy of common uranium minerals, and information on the use of electronic prospecting equipment and tests for detecting the presence of uranium. Details are given on geologically favorable areas and formations and practical methods of prospecting. Some information is given on the staking of claims, what lands are open to prospecting, and methods of securing mining rights. A forecast of the economic outlook for uranium is included. Appendixes give sources of additional information and a list of libraries where unclassified Atomic Energy Commission reports may be consulted. Because the increasing use of uranium by industry has revived interest in prospecting and exploration for this element, the Bureau of Mines has issued this report, which brings up to date and expands the subject matter of a hand- book on uranium exploration and production published in 1956.l

With growing populations, infrastructure projects are utilizing underground space to expand transportation networks, water supply and sewer disposal systems and hydropower facilities. These new projects require large diameter tunnels to meet the growing demands. As the tunnel diameter increases, not all rock mass properties are scalable and precedent experience becomes less reliable. One such non-scaleable property is lamination thickness. Numerical modelling was conducted to determine the influence of lamination thicknesses on a 16 m diameter tunnel. Five different areas of excavation response were found to exist for laminations ranging between 0.16 to 16 metres in thickness. For this tunnel diameter, critical lamination thicknesses of 6 metre and 1 metre were found to exist. Above 6 metres the excavation response was similar to isotropic models. Below 6 metres the stresses and yield are channeled by the lamination boundaries, increasing plastic deformation. Below 1m multiple lamination units become unstable and the displacements increase significantly and the shape and extent of the yield zone size changes dramatically. The yield zone is controlled by bed deflections and bed parallel shear. As the lamination thickness decreases tensile failure first begins in the haunch area and progressively extends above the crown until a self-limiting plastic yield zone shape is reach at lamination thicknesses below 0.4 metres. Conclusions drawn from observations at the Niagara Tunnel Project are those of the authors.

Oil shale, a long-considered potential source of motor fuel in the United States, is found over an extensive area in the Green River formation in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming.4/ Oil has been retorted commercially from shale in Scotland for many years,5/ and work done by the Bureau of Mines and other investigators has shown that it is technically feasible to extract oil from American shales.6/ By refining, the shale oil may be converted into marketable products similar to those manufactured from crude petroleum. A continuous mining machine was redesigned for the installation of an integrated illumination system. The illumination system was designed by first calculating the theoretical number of luminaires required to meet the Federal Illumination Standards. Luminaires initially were placed using isointensity diagrams. A darkroom was used for "fine tuning" and demonstrating that the system met the illumination requirements. The luminaire mounts were installed on a machine underground. The performance of this illumination system was monitored in the working environment of an operating coal mine. Design changes were made as necessary during this evaluation period to improve the system.

In all known deep mixing processes the existing soil is mixed with self hardening slurry by mixing tools that rotate about a vertical axis (augers, mixing paddles). Wall panels are constructed using sets of multiple mixing tools combined into a single unit. These techniques have been developed on the principle of the rotary drilling technology. In contrast, the new Cutter Soil Mixing or CSM technique is derived from the cutter technology. The soil is loosened and broken down by cutter wheels, then mixed in-situ by the rotating cutter wheels with the self-hardening slurry - introduced into the ground between the two wheels - to form a soil-slurry mortar. The main area of application lies in the construction of cut-off and retaining walls.

Coal samples taken from the No. 2 Seam and No. 4 Seam in a South African colliery were tested in a rotary triboelectrostatic separator. The two-stage triboelectrostatic separation results using the -177 µm size fraction reduced No. 2 Seam coal containing about 30.4 per cent ash to a clean product of 8.9 per cent and 13.1 per cent ash with combustible recoveries of 9.6 per cent and 30.7 per cent respectively. The same separation approach on No. 4 seam feed coal, which contained 36 per cent ash, produced a clean coal product with 10.8 per cent ash at a combustible recovery of 6.0 per cent. Petrographic tests show a significant improvement in the vitrinite content and a reduction in visible minerals encountered when using the triboelectrostatic separator, with about 53 per cent vitrinite reporting to the clean fraction for No. 2 Seam compared to the feed content of 21 per cent, and a 54 per cent vitrinite in the clean No. 4 Seam from a feed content of 21 per cent. Significant sulphur reductions were also observed after separation in both coal samples, with a better separation in the second-stage coal products.

In the past 15 years the enforced improvement of the public traffic systems caused a boom in urban tunnel construction. In 1961 the City of Paris started to build the Express-Metro. Of the 47 km long double-track line crossing the city center, nearly 45 km are in operation since 1971. Still missing is here only an about 2.6 km long connecting stretch, which is under construction now. From 1963 to 1969 the 21.8 km long Victoria Line was built in London as extension of the existing network,. A little later, in the years 1965 to 1973, the City of Hamburg supplemented its subway network by the construction of a 16.8 km long line between the Boroughs of Billstedt and Stellingen. Also in 1965 the City o Munich started to build a subway system of 54 km f length. Thereof a stretch of 16.2 km could be taken into operation in 1972 shortly before the Olympic Games. These are only some of the better known projectsas examples of the activities in European cities. In nearly all cities with more than about ½ million inhabitants subsurface traffic lines were begun or supplemented. Furthermore, numerous undercuts or other subsurface structures were built. The Ij Tunnel in Amsterdam and the new Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg may be mentioned, both structures finding international attention.

En este sentido, los métodos eléctricos de investigación geofísicas suministran las posibles indicaciones sobre la tectónica y la petrografía de la costa terrestre, analizando las variaciones de la conductibilidad de esta última; conductibilidad que puede ser metálica o electrólitica. A conventional trailing cable connection box on a continuous mining machine was modified by the addition of two innovative devices. These are a pressure vent to preclude buildup of high pressure due to an explosion in-side the enclosure, and a grommet-type cable entry to simplify and speedup cable entering procedures. The innovative devices were evaluated for eight and one-half months in a working section of an underground coal mine. Laboratory tests before and after the in-mine exposure show no measurable change in the devices. Following the favorable in-mine evaluation, technical performance criteria were defined to serve as the basis of approval for the use of the innovative devices. Additional tests to measure comparable gripping of the cable by asbestos rope, substitution rope materials and by the urethane grommet-type entry were included in this effort. Also, literature for the last 80 years was searched. Comments are provided as to how the innovative devices comply with 30 CFR Part 18.
