This paper presents an algorithm for the de- termination of a production schedule for an open pit mine that satisfies all principal physical and economic constraints required by a realistic mine design. We propose to model the evolution of the mine over time as a sequential optimization problem or, equivalently, as a problem of finding a path with a largest value in a graph. Some preliminary evidence is provided that such a path can be effectively sought by an algorithm that combines a number of heuristic search rules, inspired in part by learning theories developed in Artificial Intelligence.

Verification of computer generated reserve models is essential since the computer does not automatically check the validity of methods and assumptions selected by the user and their results. For the computer to do model verification would require an expert system which would perform tests on the model and determine if the model is valid. Since such an expert system is not available, it is up to users to verify the models they develop.

The Mining Engineering Handbook is written primarily for persons interested in the economic extraction of minerals. Not everyone referring to this book will be knowledgeable about mining and, therefore, this section is intended to explain to interested persons the scope of mining as well as fulfilling the title of "Mining's Place and Contribution" among the industries of society. 1.1-MINERALS, ROCKS AND ORE In the year 1971, the number of known elements amounted to 104. Fifteen of these have been made only in the laboratory, others may have persisted from the primitive atmosphere, but, by and large, elements originated from magmas or igneous rocks of the outer rocky shell of the earth. Only eight elements constitute 98% by weight of the earth's crust. These are oxygen, 47%; silicon. 28%; aluminum, 8%; iron, 5%; and sodium, magnesium, potassium and calcium, less than 4% each. These common elements and the other less common ones are the building blocks of minerals, of which there are over 2,000 varieties. According to Webster: "A mineral is an inorganic substance occul.ring natura!ly in the earth and having a consistent and distinctive set of physical properties and a composition that can be expressed by a chemical formula. The term is sometimes applied to organic substances, such as coal." Thus, minerals are precise combinations of elements. Rocks, as distinct from minerals, are composed of assemblages of minerals. When minerals are found in sufficient concentration to warrant extraction by mining, the mineralized area is considered an ore deposit. The definition of ore is mineral that can be extracted from the ground at a profit. The economic connotation is implicit in the word ore. Since most of the useful elements compose such a small percentage of the earth's crust, the occurrence of ore deposits as we know them would not have transpired had not geologic processes concentrated the elements (see Sec. 4). 1.2-DEFINITIONS OF MINING TERMS Extensive coverage of the many descriptive terms used in mining may be found in a good mining glossary, such as is available from the Superintendent of Documents (see Sec. 35), but for convenience a number of the more common definitions are given here. Mining may be defined, as by A. B. Cummins, as the act, process or work of extracting minerals or coal from their natural environment and transporting them to the point of processing or use. Mining techniques are applied to extracting metallic minerals, such as ores of gold, copper, lead or zinc; to fuels, such as coal, anthracite, lignite and tar sands; and to nonmetallic minerals, such as lime-

Several major impediments threaten the successful delivery of tunnel and under-ground construction projects. In addition to technical design and construction risks associated with tunnel projects, many of which are well understood, budgetary pressures, funding constraints and the complexity of procuring, administering and executing multiple concur-rent projects in a large program could also have a catastrophic impact on the program?s objectives. Contributing factors often include poorly managed design, procurement, construction, managerial, organizational, market and stake-holder risks, as well as nonconforming inputs or outputs to the costs and schedule, or any other potential inabilities to deliver the required or desired results. A strategy to prevent ?failure? of a project requires a proactive and holistic approach to risk management. Through planning, identification, analysis, management, monitoring and control of the project?s risks (both threats and opportunities), attention to management of risk will in-crease the probability and impact of positive events and decrease the probability and impact of events adverse to a project?s objectives.

The paper presents an innovative directional controlled blasting (DCB) technique for excavating unstable slopes along the Konkan railway in India without disturbing the traffic. New empirical formulae for small geometry blasting to estimate burden and throw were developed. A unique sequence of firing and excavation with powder factor varying between 0.04 and 0.39 kg/m3, irrespective of the actual free face, was used for rock blasting. The process controlled the throw of blasted material over the track and resulted in a smooth and stable wall. The slope angle was changed from 80–82 to 45–47 degrees, and possible wedge, planar and toppling failures were eliminated. No incident of rockfall and slope failure along these slopes has been observed after the stabilization.

Principally, mining natural resources is a finite business that reaches its limits once the deposits mined are depleted, the resources can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way or substitutes are pushing the mined products out of the market. An example of the latter is the increasing replacement of coal with natural gas and renewables in power generation in the United States [1]. According to the model of the product lifecycle, the global hard-coal mining industry has reached a stagnation phase [2]. The trend is obvious. Coal use peaked in 2013 [3], and the coal demand of China has been slowly decreasing since then [4]. Coal consumption in the United States saw a 16 percent decline from 726 Mt (800 million st) to 608 Mt (670 million st) between 2015 and 2019. In addition, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, it will not rise again [5]. The decline is attributed to complex market dynamics, from low gas prices because of the “shale gas revolution” [6] to federal environmental regulations like the Clean Power Plan. Moreover, important players like the United Nations and the European Union have already begun to describe pathways toward decarbonization. Increasing competition between coal-mining companies and the mining regions can be expected worldwide if companies want to keep their positions on the global and national coal markets. Companies will focus on the best deposits. European countries, like France, Spain or Germany, are only forerunners of this development — their centuries of coal production have passed. The concept of sustainable development (SD) is fundamentally based on a model of progress in which ecological, economic and social dimensions should be developed equally and positively. Questions arise, such as: How can SD be a corporate goal in a phase of decline? How can former mining regions sustainably progress to a better future? The steps Germany has taken to handle the coal decline in a sustainable way and the lessons learned from this process are described in this paper.

"It is important to make a clear distinction on the scope of work of the Global Mining Standards and Guidelines (GMSG) guideline for sampling grinding circuits. Many mineral processing practitioners are familiar with the sampling and surveying of comminution circuits, in particular grinding circuits, for performance diagnosis and the identification of optimization potential. These surveys often provide information for population balance modelling of individual comminution and classification unit processes, and consequently require a large amount of information to calibrate and validate the unit models. As a result, these surveys are labour intensive, somewhat expensive, depending on internal capabilities of the mine site or company and have a long time span from initial planning to final reporting. They also require a high level of expertise to process the survey data, simulate the circuit and make sensible recommendations on follow up actions.As a result of these factors, full grinding circuit surveys are not a common occurrence at a large number of processing facilities, and several years may pass before follow up surveys are conducted. In the ensuing gap between surveys, the efficiency of the grinding circuit must often be taken on faith, and this is considered an unacceptable lapse in an environment of strained natural resources and low commodity prices.To support the rapid and productive energy efficiency analysis being promoted by the ICE working group, a much simplified survey and analysis process is required. The process reflected in the GMSG guideline is indeed more conducive to frequent analysis, at a skill level that is well within the capabilities of the average plant metallurgist. As a result, it becomes feasible to conduct mini-surveys of plant performance, which can be used to quickly and precisely diagnose the high level impact of process changes. These methods can also be manipulated by an experienced practitioner to provide sufficient information for modelling of the circuit to estimate the impact of process changes, allowing an initial rate and rank exercise to focus plant optimization efforts."

BHP Diamonds is developing Canada's first diamond mine, Ekati, located in the Northwest Territories (NWT). The mine is a joint venture between manager and operator BHP (51%), Dia Met Minerals (29%), Charles Fipke (10%) and Stuart Blusson (10%). BHP Diamonds is part of BHP Minerals: Production at Ekati began Oct. 14,1998. The mine is situated on a 3,450-km2 (853,000-acre) claim block located in the Lac de Gras region of the NWT (Fig. 1). It is about 300 km (185 miles) northeast of Yellowknife and 100 km (60 miles) south of the Arctic Circle. The seasonal winter ice road to Echo Bay's Lupin Mine passes along the eastern margin of the project area. This allows road access each year from mid-January to mid-April. For the remainder of the year, the project is accessible only by air.

When systematically compared to other engineering fields, mining engineering is distinctive in 1) having a total systems concern. 2) dealing with encumbered space and 3) requiring full spectrum practice. The total systems concern results from having to design and then co-ordinate in space and time several major systems: excavating and bulk handling, ground control, life support and normal support. This requirement favors a generalist rather than a specialist approach. In coping with encumbered space especially in underground coal mining, the uncertainties of geologic conditions are compounded by tightness, roughness, remoteness and hazards. Into this difficult setting the total systems * complex is "stuffed," adding congestion and interference. Because of significant ground deterioration a flexible "rapid in-out" approach is usually vital to mining. Full spectrum practice arises from the need to manage, as well as to plan and design, a labor intensive operation. Since market conditions can also fluctuate most aspects of administration are needed in many respects, mining engineering functions relative to civil engineering in a way similar to industrial to mechanical engineering, with encumbered space being crucial. On this basis stress is placed on: 1) personal relations, 2) field work and 3) entrepreneurship, viewing time as money. Specific recommendations for improving engineering, safety and management and leadership are made. Since most new deposits are marginal, by applying these recommendations with high technology they could possibly now be mined on a widespread basis.

Traditionally, water removal has taken a backseat to many other coal mining functions. However, it is a vital part of the total mine support system. In many US coal mines, more tons of water are removed each year than tons of coal. An excellent discussion of general drainage characteristics can be found in Chapter 8 of Elements of Practical Coal Mining, published by SME-AIME. This chapter is organized into three major sections. These are: designing effective drainage systems; constructing the main mine pumping station (static system); and constructing a portable pumping station (dynamic system). Each topic presents a separate discussion of the elements a construction foreman or engineer should consider for effective installation and operation of the mine drainage system. In addition, a list of pumping equipment manufacturers is available to interested persons and follows these sections.

In June, 1980, Reserve Mining Company completed a 370 million dollar construction project which included process modifications required to reduce the silica content from nine to five percent by weight and increase the iron con- tent of Reserve's pellets from 62.5 to 65.8 percent by weight (dry basis); process modifications and additions required to implement "best available technology" water quality controls; and installation of "best available technology" air emission controls. The new process began operation on June 24, 1980 and is being optimized to meet design objectives. Dry cobbing, fine screening and flotation additions to the concentrating process have reduced the silica content of Reserve's pellet from nine percent to five percent by weight. The process reclaims and reuses all process waters, stores all tailings in a zero discharge tailings basin and meets all air emission standards.

"This paper deals with an innovative mechanized method to bore and simultaneously line circular shafts, adopted in the Naples Metro project for the installation of 10 vertical shafts for ventilation purposes. With this method, excavation of shafts is carried out under a positive head of stabilizing fluid by a milling machine, temporarily set at the bottom of a permanent lining made of precast reinforced concrete segment rings. The debris is evacuated by inverse fluid circulation. The shafts in Naples are 4.5 m I.D., from 34 to 44 m deep and they are all located downtown in a highly urbanized area. They were bored and installed into volcanic soils under a hydrostatic head of up to 30 m. Displacements and groundwater level were constantly monitored to keep control of the effects on the surrounding buildings and utilities. INTRODUCTIONThe extension of Metro Line 1 in Naples (Italy) from the previous terminal of Piazza Dante to Piazza Garibaldi is also called the “low stretch”. Most of it runs along the coastline, encompassing the historical city center, the Greek-Roman Neapolis. The Metro Line crosses under densely urbanized areas for the whole way (Figure 1). It runs beneath Via Toledo, which follows the layout of the ancient Aragonese walls. The first station (Toledo) is located halfway along this street. Then, after a wide bend, the line reaches Piazza Municipio, where the second station is located. From there, the line moves along the axis of Via Depretis and Corso Umberto I, where the stations Università and Duomo are situated. The fifth station is in Piazza Garibaldi and the end of the stretch is located at the Naples Business Center. The twin single track tunnels were bored into volcanic tuff by TBM. This design choice simplified by far the construction of the tunnels and reduced to practically zero the interactions between tunnelling and surface buildings and utilities. Nevertheless, this choice entailed that the line had to be located at depths to the order of 35-45m below ground level and 30-35m below the water table. At each tunnel segment between stations, a pair of ventilation chambers were constructed (10 in total). Each ventilation chamber is connected to one TBM tunnel by a vertical shaft and a horizontal drift at the base of the shaft. The shafts, in addition to tunnel ventilation, provide a safety access/escape."

Following three major mining accidents in 2006, the MINER Act of 2006 was enacted by the U.S.Congress. The U.S. Mining Safety and Health Administration subsequently released the Final Rule on Refuge Alternatives for Underground Coal Mines, which required every underground coal mine to install refuge alternatives to help prevent future fatalities of trapped miners in the event of a disaster. The following paper documents the research that was performed on a structural wall to be used in conjunction with a breathable air system to create a refuge alternative. A 103.4-kPa (15-psi) safe haven polycarbonate wall for use in underground coal mines was designed and modeled using finite element modeling in ANSYS Explicit Dynamics. The successful safe haven wall design was modeled for an actual underground coal mine environment using the explicit finite difference formulation program FLAC3D to determine the responses of the wall and surrounding strata within a mine. A full-scale design was fabricated and installed in an underground coal mine to determine any construction constraints and as a final step in proof of concept for the safe haven wall design. This paper is meant to introduce the reader to a new wall concept to be used in conjunction with current technology.

With vehicles frequently found in mines and tires being a major fuel item, the risk of tire fires will be severe underground. This study presents an analysis of tire fires on mining vehicles to increase the knowledge of the risk and mitigating measures, which would improve the fire safety underground. Data from fire experiments and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were applied. It was found that the wheelhouse of a loader caused an increase in the flame tilt angle, decreasing the flame impingement and heat flux downstream. The flame temperature of a drilling rig tire was found to be higher than that of a loader tire, increasing the risk of igniting items. The construction of the wheelhouse/mudguard will contribute to a longer flame length by creating a fuel-rich environment. The CFD simulations predicted higher flame tilt angles for a drilling rig for higher flow velocities, indicating the influence of the wheelhouse/mudguard construction and tire geometry on the flame tilt angle. The construction of a loader resulted in flow behavior, where the short distance to the front mudguard/tire and the separation of flow directly downstream of the construction led to gases being steered past the front mudguard/tire. In a drilling rig case, the longer distance to the front mudguard/tire led to gases being directed toward the body of the vehicle after passing the area with flow separation.

At Gold Fields' Chimney Creek Mine, major reviews of the reclamation and closure plans are done concurrently with the annual mine planning required for budget preparation. This review includes identifying and scheduling reclamation work that can be done within the next few years and development of associated costs. Longer term mine, leach pad and waste dump development are examined to take advantage of any design changes that can reduce ongoing reclamation or closure requirements and reduce costs. The success and cost effectiveness of past efforts are continually evaluated to determine the best methods for reclamation.

In 1968, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation awarded S.S. Mullen Construction of Seattle, the Intake Tunnel (488 m by 4 m diameter tunnel) and Pumping Plant No. 1. In1998, the Southern Nevada Water Authority awarded Lake Mead Constructors (Kiewit of Omaha) a parallel New Intake Tunnel (518 m long by 4.6 m diameter tunnel) and Pumping Plant. Both projects provide water to a thirsty Las Vegas. This paper presents a detailed comparison of the two intake tunnels in terms of grout takes and pressures, geologic mapping and rock quality, grout penetration beyond the excavation line, degree of fracture grouting, and groundwater inflow boundary considerations. The paper provides a comparison of grouting techniques and material developments then and now.

Mining means drilling and blasting in order to break down the rock, loading and transport, and often also crushing the ore down to a suitable size. These operations can be done in open pits or in underground mines, and also, to a lesser extent, in marine mining. The same operations are also used in various types of construction, i.e., for roads, water power stations, etc. Before beginning a detailed economic analysis of the factors which enter into deciding whether to mine by open-pit or underground mining, and at what point a change should be made from open-pit to underground mining, or vice versa, it is of interest to consider some general factors.

The 1972 discovery of the Howards Pass lead-zinc deposit was the product of systematic regional geochemical surveys used to evaluate conceptual geological models for the metal-rich black shales of the Selwyn Basin. Motivation of personnel involved in all aspects of work was as critical a factor to the success as the existing corporate attitudes and infrastructure. Exploration programs were flexible but maintained a focus only on targets of sufficient economic potential to support operations in remote locations. Direct costs for the programs that lead to the discovery were in the order of $500,000 (Canadian 1972). Geological reserves today stand at over 500 Mt (511 million st) of 7% combined lead-zinc, containing a higher grade zone of nearly 10 Mt (11 million st) of 16% combined lead-zinc.

Introduction and Historical Background Although both sluices and devices using a simple flowing film are among the oldest known methods of concentration, they are still extensively employed in a variety of situations where they are not only efficient but also have a low operating cost. More particularly, they are valuable for making a bulk concentrate of high specific gravity minerals from alluvials and beach sand and in upgrading low value ores. The antiquity of some of the basic concepts can be seen in the fact that they are found in Agricola's De Re Metallica which was published at Basic in 1546, while in 1602, Carew114 gave a fairly clear account of tin ore dressing in Cornwall in which grass turves were used to catch the cassiterite. This is perhaps one of the forerun¬ners of the blanket strake. The planilla of Mexico, the lanchute of Malaysia and the old Cornish box huddle are also descended from these early strakes. In fact, a sluice with holes in the bottom for concentrate discharge was shown by Agricola, not unlike the principle used in the plane table and the lamflo sluice. The convex huddle for the treatment of sandy material appeared about 1848 and the concave form eight to ten years later. For the treatment of "slime" sizes, wooden dead frames which were manually worked were used in Cornwall for many years but gave way to the automatic water-operated type in 1860, and even a mechanically tilted frame was described by Henderson115 in 1857. Theoretical Considerations The behavior of solid particles in suspension depends to a great extent upon the pulp density and the size of the suspended particles. In a fairly dilute suspension, such as that normally used when dealing with small particle sizes, the behavior of particles in a flowing film results from two effects. These are the lateral displacement, which is determined by the time taken for each particle to penetrate the flowing film and reach the solid surface, and the resistance offered by each particle to further displacement after it has reached this surface. The initial penetration through the flowing film depends on the size and specific gravity of the particle and the thickness and viscosity of the film. As a result the smaller particles will migrate further before their movement is retarded relative to larger particles of the same specific gravity. The behavior on reaching the solid surface de¬pends on whether there is a single particle layer or, as is more often the case, a multiple layer or thin bed of material which is sufficiently dilated, permits the penetration of higher specific gravity grains. Thrust of Flowing Films. When a thin film of liquid flows over a plane solid surface, the layer next to the surface remains at rest but the velocity of the film increases with the distance from the surface and becomes a maximum near, but not quite at, the free surface. Therefore, a particle in suspension in such a film is acted upon by a greater force near the upper part of the film than at the lower part, resulting in an overturning effect. After a particle reaches the separating surface or an accumulated densely packed bed of other particles, the liquid flow causes it to move downstream by rolling, sliding, or by a movement involving alternating suspension and deposi¬tion (saltation). In rolling and sliding, which are brought about by a substantially noneddying stream, the large submerged particles are acted upon to the greatest extent and they move more rapidly than smaller ones, notwithstanding their greater mass. When two particles of the same size but of different specific gravity are considered, the higher density one moves more slowly by reason of its greater mass. As a result the particles tend to become arranged in the manner shown in Fig. 29. If any particle is so large as to stand above the water surface, the transporting force on such a particle, although the maximum available, will have less effect than that on a submerged one. Such large grains are therefore carried a lesser distance. Fluid Velocity in a Flowing Film It can be shown that if y is the distance within the flowing film from the interface, the fluid velocity v' at this point is given by IIn this equation p' is the fluid density, g the acceleration due to gravity, a the viscosity, a the angle made by the film to the horizontal, and 0 the film thickness (in cgs units). Furthermore, the volume Q of fluid per unit time and unit width is related to the film thickness and can be calculated, since which upon integration gives Consideration of the velocity v' (Eq. l) and the terminal falling velocity µ derived from Stokes law enables the horizontal travel dz in time dt to be calculated as follows: Again integration and substitution of Eq. 3 gives In this equation, z is the distance travelled before a particle of density p at the top of the fluid film has settled on the concentrating surface. From these expressions it can be seen that the depth of the flowing film varies as the cube root of the volume of fluid and inversely as the cube root of the sine of the plane surface inclination. Similarly the distance a particle can travel before reaching the surface is directly related to the quantity of fluid and its viscosity. The viscosity of pulp is greatly increased by the presence of near colloidal particles and consequently the penetration of the somewhat larger grains through the flowing film is retarded, resulting in them being carried further across the concentrator deck. Obviously this effect can be reduced by prior removal of some or all of the ultra¬fine particles. The detrimental effect of kaolin on the separation of fine ferrosilicon from quartz has also been demonstrated by Johnston,116 the relationship between viscosity and efficiency of separation being shown in Fig. 30. The pH value also has a very marked influence on the viscosity and the use of acid mine water, for example, can increase viscosity materially and thereby result in lower efficiency. Dilation of Multi-Particle Systems Except during washing (when a single particle layer may exist) concentration usually takes place in a bed of particles which is partially dilated or stirred by eddy currents. Introduction In modern society, vanadium is defined as a strategic metal. Some 90% of the global consumption is used as an alloying agent for carbon steels, tool steels, and high-strength low-alloy steels (particularly for pipelines). Advanced titanium-aluminum-vanadium alloys are seeing application in the aerospace industry. Small but ever growing amounts are finding application as catalysts or in electronics. New uses are continually being discovered for this metal. One example of a new application is the vanadium-redox battery for use in generation plants and back-up power sources. Vanadium is found in a large number of minerals, of which the most important are carnotite, roscoelite, vanadinite, mottramite, and patronite. Just over a third of the world's vanadium is produced as a primary product; the balance is a by-product of the iron and steel, oil refining, power generation and uranium enrichment industries. Vanadium can also be sourced by recycling spent catalysts from the petrochemical industry and ash produced by the combustion of oil emulsion in power stations. However, recycling activities are believed to account for only a small amount of total world supply. Vanadium is recovered from these ores largely as the pentoxide (V2O5) [1]. The major sources of vanadium-bearing magnetite ores are scattered throughout Australia, China, Russia, and South Africa. Current estimates of world’s Proven & Probable vanadium reserves are of the order of 41.3 million tones [2, 3]. Commercial vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite deposits can be found in Kachkanar, Russia; Pan Zhihua, China; Bushveld, South Africa; and Windimurra, Western Australia [4]. Other deposits have been found in New Zealand, Canada, and India, among other countries. Vanadium consumption in the steel sector has increased some 7% per ton of steel over the last 10 years as new alloying applications have been found to improve steel's strength-to-weight ratio. Future demand from the aerospace and nuclear industries for non-ferrous vanadium alloys such as titanium and super-alloys is also likely to grow. Vanadium is usually added in the form of ferrovanadium, a vanadium-iron alloy. Vanadium compounds, especially the pentoxide form, are used in the ceramics, glass, and dye industries, and are also important as catalysts in the chemical industry. While established approaches may be used at an industrial scale to treat vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite ores in several countries, new alternatives are being developed worldwide. This review will give short overview of the treatment of vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite ores, an overview of direct reduction and direct smelting processes and an approach to determine technical alternatives for the property.
