The Minerals Processing Section of Surface Combustion is currently engineering and erecting a plant designed to produce 400,000 LTPY of 95% metalized pellets from raw magnetite concentrate, This venture is the first domestic commercial facility that will manufacture pre-reduced pellets as an integral part of a process to produce steel. Surface Combustion has developed the methods that will be used. Midrex, a division of Surface Combustion's parent company, Midland-Ross, will own and operate this plant. The site is adjacent to the City of Portland, Oregon on a 15 acre hydraulically-filled area on the east bank of the Willamette River. Either filter cake or concentrates in slurry form will be purchased from Marcona in Peru, delivered to the dock facility by ocean vessels and distributed to a pond for wet storage. Reclamation from the pond will be with a conventional dredge delivering concentrate to a thickener.

Silicon Carbide and Aluminum Oxide were two of the early forms of man-made abrasives often referred to as synthetic and were invented at the turn of the century. Edward G. Acheson invented Silicon Carbide in 1893 and Charles F. Jacobs filed a patent for the manufacture of fused alumina from bauxite in 1900. Jacobs' patent provided a method for tempering the alumina by reduction and fusion to a degree of hardness and toughness suitable for abrasive purposes. These two inventions are the basis of the synthetic abrasive industry today. Improvements have been made in the equipment used in the process, however the process itself remains basically the same. In 1904 A. C. Higgins observed that hot spots developed on the shell of the pot furnace used in the reduction of bauxite. He found that by spraying water on the hot spots they could be prevented and, in addition, they failed to return in the same place. Higgins reasoned that the cooling effect of the water caused the melt contacting the metal shell to freeze as an insulating autogenous refractory. This suggested that an improved furnace design could be obtained by using a metal shell which is continuously flooded with water on the exterior surface. Paradoxically, a furnace required to contain tons of molten Aluminun Oxide was thus constructed of nothing but a sheet steel shell with no refractory lining at all. A test of such an arrangement was tried by Higgins with considerable trepidation and was found to be extremely satisfactory.

Newmont has delineated a 600,000+ ounce gold reserve in the Cargo Muchacho Mountains. This is a desert range underlain by Proterozoic(?) Tumco Formation (gneiss) intruded by Jurassic granitic plutons, and cut by low angle shears of the late Cretaceous Chocolate Mountain Thrust event. Gold, associated with pyrite, quartz veinlets, and propylitic alteration, is emplaced along low angle shears. The mineralizing system, enriched in tungsten, copper, zinc and arsenic, was active during Eocene time. Gold reserves are found in eleven areas as moderate to high tenor deposits that may be mined by open pit and underground techniques. Eastmaque Gold Mines Ltd. is developing the deposit.

The importance of coal as the major energy source has led to wider interest in the recovery of waste coal fines as a usable product. An additional incentive for fine coal recovery has been the increased emphasis on environ- mental pollution control and conservation of the nation's natural resources, Accordingly, a series of studies and tests were performed to investigate the feasibility of the recovery, concentration, balling and pelletizing of coal fines as a marketable adjunct to existing mining and beneficiation operations. These studies were conducted at the existing operations of the Eastern Coal Corporation at Stone, Kentucky, and the Metallurgical Laboratory of Arthur G. McKee & Company in Cleveland, Ohio. The purpose of the investigations was to recover the fines from the effluent waste waters of an existing preparation plant and transform them into a high carbon, low sulfur and ash product capable of being handled with a minimum of degradation and dusting problems. The fines were relatively high in ash content prior to processing, and flotation pretreatment served a combined function of beneficiation, recovery and water clarification, The minus 28 mesh coal concentrate containing 40 to 45 percent minus 325 mesh size material had an ash content varying between 5 and 7 percent and a sulfur content of less than 0.5 percent. Chemical and size analyses of the effluent and concentrated fines are presented in Table I for comparison.

Cyanidation tailings which are disposed in a surface impoundment experience a loss of cyanide due to natural degradation, frequently reducing the cyanide concentration to very low levels. Quantifying cyanide losses in terms of pond geometry, local weather conditions and feed solution chemistry has been largely empirical though in many cases mining operations rely on surface impoundments to reduce cyanide to below an internally regulated concentration or an effluent limitation. To permit a more quantitative evaluation of cyanide losses in an impoundment, a computer simulation was developed to estimate the losses of free, WAD and total cyanide due to dissociation, photolysis and volatilization. Results of the model are compared against data collected for a North American tailings impoundment during 1998.

Flotation data indicate that sulfonate and dodecylamine adsorb physically on Mn02 at ambient temperature. Oleate also adsorbs physically if the zero-point-of-charge of the Mn02 is sufficiently high. Chemisorption of oleate apparently occurs between pH 8 and 9, and this phenomenon is enhanced considerably at elevated temperature.

The Bureau of Mines' Tuscaloosa Research Center has developed a field test unit (FTU) which dewaters mine and/or mineral processing by-product slurries. The feed material (by-product slurry) is mixed with a known quantity and specific type of synthetic polymer (usually a polyacrylamide) to induce flocculation in a continuous operation. The flocculated material passes over a specific number and size of slotted stationary screens which separates the flocculated solid material from the "clean" water. The "static screens" are positioned at a fixed angle to maximize flow capacity and capture of the solids content. An investigation was conducted at an industrial crushed stone operation located near Birmingham, AL, to determine if the Bureau's FTU could successfully dewater the waste slurry generated during grinding and sizing operations at this facility. The investigation showed that waste slurries could be dewatered to 50 pct solids, at a polymer cost of approximately $0.85/ton of dry solids treated, and resulted in approximately 85 to 95 pct solids recovery. The dewatered material continued to consolidate and reached 69 pct solids in 24 h. Presently, the waste slurry generated at this facility is discarded into impoundments. However, this research has identified the recovered waste as an economically marketable product.

This semantically ambiguous title purports to describe an examination of the question of automation and its effect on the industrial worker. More explicit titles might be "Painless Automation" or "Mechanization without a Sting" or, if I may steal a few phrases from the title of a recent interview Pith John L. Lewis, "More Machines, Fewer Men -- Is the Union Happy About It?" Automation has become the biggest ?scare word? for many industrial workers and their unions since "wage stabilization.? "To many a union orator," reports TIME of January 4, "automation is the sinister business of eliminating jobs." TIME might better have phrased this description by saying that many unions regard automation as the attempt to eliminate not jobs, but workers, The recent steel dispute was hung up for so long primarily because of the problems evolved of increased job efficiency through automation and job changes. Everywhere today there is heard the cry of our need for maintaining full employment within the context of an expanding economy echoing against the sheer reality of automation's displacement of thousands of workers through a rapid acceleration of productivity.

Subsidence profiles over Saskatchewan potash mines exhibit forms which cannot be explained by existing subsidence models. The subsidence is affected by bridging of competent rocks. A modification of the theory can explain the observed displacement of subsidence profiles due to bridging. An unusual shallow secondary subsidence trough has been observed extending two to three kilometers outside the primary subsidence. The secondary subsidence is explained as an elastic compression inresponse to a drop in pore water pressure in the vicinity of the caving zone. The concept of pore water pressure may lead to a safe extraction limit for Saskatchewan mines.

In order to control and dispatch the sewage water coming from 3 tunnels toward 2 downstream sewage tunnels, a large cavern has been excavated in a suburb of PARIS. Located at a depth of 47,00 m, it has been excavated using the NATM procedure through swelling clay, weathered sandstone, and marl and chalk. It is 16,50 m high, 12,40 m wide and 60, 00 m long, with an elliptical cross-section and its two ends are egg-shapped. The final lining of the cavern is composed of 30 to 40 cm of shotcrete, steel ribs and passive anchor bars. The excavation stages and related movements were surveyed by extensometers, pressure cells and convergence devices. The design, method of construction of the cavern and the results of the measurements made are commented.

A paper was presented during the 1970 SME Fall Meeting on the Stinson Preparation Facilities by representatives of Beaver Creek Consolidated Cool Company and Heyl & Patterson, Inc. This paper summarized a combined approach to development of a flow diagram and selection of cleaning equipment required to produce a uniform metallurgical coal at maximum recovery with special emphasis on sulphur reduction. These facilities were located in the Elkhorn. Coal Fields of eastern Kentucky and, in particular, the area of Wayland, Knott County, Kentucky, where approximately forty-five- million tons of Elkhorn No. 3 coal could he recovered. The facilities incorporated a Bradford Breaker for reduction of the ROM coal to minus 1-1/2 x 0, 6000 ton-raw coal storage, preparation plant, water clarification and thermal drying facilities, clean coal storage and a 4000 TPH unit train loading facility.

Chemically, mica is a complex silicate of sodium, potassium and aluminum. There are no important uses of mica where the chemical analysis is important, except that in some uses of ground mica, the content of iron oxide present as an impurity must be kept to a very low limit. Muscovite mica is frequently found containing black and red "stain" as a homogeneous part of the books or sheets. In most cases this stain or impurity is magnetite or hematite. Some mica contains impurities deposited by infiltration. This is commonly a red stain, less often brown or white. The best mica is free from all such impurities, and the greater their content, the less value does the mica have.(1) It is because of these undesirable impurities that a large segment of the fine ground mica industry relies on weathered pegmatites and alaskite ores as a source of raw material. The mica concentrates obtained from these ores are relatively clean and require moderate beneficiation to meet color and density specifications. One need only to observe the stained and decrepitated condition of the mica recovered from mica schist to appreciate the challenge that processing this material presents. Despite these adversities there are several advantages to be gained by mining and processing mica schist ores. The mica content of these ores are considerably higher than the pegmatites and alaskite ores now being mined, often containing in excess of forty percent mica. Conditioning is any treatment of an ore with or without reagents which affect its floatability. While it can start in crushing or grinding circuits and continue into the flotation circuit, conditioning will refer here only to reagent treatment in an agitated tank designed for the purpose. Such treatment is often unnecessary with sulphide ores and collectors or with amines,* but it has long been recognized as essential with fatty acid collectors in the flotation of non-sulphide minerals, The requirements can be extremely variable, depending upon ore alteration, the presence or absence of slimes, and 1 the minerals to be separated. The study described here was concerned with the recovery of oxidized molybdenum minerals from an ore containing the element in both sulphide and oxidized form. Flotation of the iron minerals with which the oxidized molybdenum was associated was the basis for the process. Recovery and optimum concentrate grade without desliming depended upon a twenty to thirty minute conditioning of the pulp with flotation reagents at forty to fifty percent solids and at high turbulence. The objective in the study was the determination of design and operating criteria for conditioners in order to permit scaling-up of the results without repeating the entire study on a larger scale.

INTRODUCTION The past few years has seen an increased interest in the determination of statistically valid properties of a rock mass. The increased use of computer modelling for the study of rock excavation behaviour has created a need for upper and lower statistical bounds for the properties of a rock mass being modelled. Obviously, to determine the statistical properties of a large volume of rock, many samples must be tested - an expensive proposition when using conventional testing facilities and procedures. As a result of high costs per sample, sufficient tests for statistically valid results are rarely done. In an effort to reduce both sample preparation and test facility costs, an instrument called the Bemek Advanced Rock Tester (BRT) was developed in Sweden. With a total weight of approx. 35 kg, the BRT is portable and sells at a small fraction of the cost of a conventional testing machine. It is comprised of a small 65 KN loading frame with attachments for a variety of tests (see Table 1) , a hand operated hydraulic pump, an electronic balancing unit and a programmable microprocessor. The microprocessor is capable of storing data, performing arithmetic operation on, and printing signals from, a transducer and two strain gauges. A detailed description of the apparatus is given by G. Swan et al. (1). The proposed test strategy involves first a 3-point flexure test on a notched core specimen, followed by a 4-point flexure test on the separated specimen halves. Finally, point load and Brazilian tests can be carried out on the quarter parts of the original specimen. Thus specimen preparation is kept to a minimum. These and other perceived advantages have prompted the purchase of this machine and an evaluation of its suitability to provide data on mechanical properties of intact rock for numerical modelling and rock mechanics design at Noranda's underground mines. Details of its performance evaluation and experiences with the unit are discussed in the following sections. [ ] INITIAL OPERATING EXPERIENCE During the commissioning stage the BRT had, or developed, a series of problems, some of which seriously affected its operation. Below are some examples. Poor documentation was the most serious problem encountered. Confusing instructions for the 4-point bend test installation and its microprocessor programing, as well as poor and ambiguous information on the calculation of gauge factors, are some of the difficulties which had to be overcome. Meehan~cal problems occurred, including failure of the hydraulic pump, as well as electronic difficulties with the microprocessor. Other problems with the printer, requiring its replaceqent, were fortunately covered under warranty.

A tectonically disturbed sequence of Mississippian age evaporites expressing a 5 milligal negative gravity anomaly near Sussex in southeastern New Brunswick, Canada, was investigated by a program of drilling, geologic and geophysical work over the past 27 months. Seventeen of twenty-one drill holes have penetrated 10 to 140 feet of potash mineralization in a salt sequence underlying 2 000 to 3 000 feet of arenaceous, conformable red beds, also of Mississippian age. Bromine and borate studies, lithological characteristics and geophysics, have facilitated improved understanding of the salt structure. The salt sequence has been affected by f1owage which has resulted in both major and minor folding. In the more disturbed areas, the potash interval was extensively subterraneally eroded at the upper anhydrite-salt contact.

Discussion by M.R. Yalamanchili and J.D. Miller The authors, M. S. Celik et al., should be recognized for their efforts to describe the flotation behavior of boron minerals. In the case of borax and other soluble salt minerals, analysis of the flotation chemistry has been difficult because of the high ionic strengths associated with these soluble salt systems. However, considerable progress has been made in this area, and recently a surface charge/collector colloid adsorption model was proposed by Miller and his coworkers to explain the collector adsorption phenomena observed in soluble salt flotation systems (Milleret al, 1992; Yalamanchili et al., 1993; Miller and Yalamanchili, 1994; Yalamanchili and Miller, 1994a: Yalamanchili and Miller, 1994b). In this work, the sign of the surface charge of alkali halides in their saturated brines was established on the basis of nonequilibrium electrophoretic mobility measurements by laser-Doppler electrophoresis (Miller et al., 1992). Generally, these results are what would be expected from the simplified lattice-ionhydration theory. This electrokinetic information coupled with the stability and prevalence of collector colloids in such soluble salt flotation systems indicates that the selective flotation of alkali halides is due to the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. Experimental flotation/bubble attachment results for 21 different alkali halides (Yalamanchili et al., 1993; Yalamanchili and Miller, I994b) confirmed that the flotation response of soluble salt minerals with weak electrolyte collectors can best be explained by the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids rather than by the adsorption collector ions and/or neutral molecular dipoles as originally suggested by many researchers (Fuerstenau and Fuerstenau, 1957; Schubert, 1967; Roman et al., 1968). In addition, the flotation of certain alkali oxyanions (Pizarro et al., 1993) and double salts such as schoenite and kainite can be explained by the same collector colloid adsorption mechanism (Miller and Yalamanchili, 1994). The borax flotation results reported by Celik et al. need to be examined in terms of the above mentioned surface charge/ collector colloid adsorption model. Unfortunately, the authors seem to be unaware of this recent work that nicely describes soluble salt flotation with weak electrolyte type collectors such as amines and carboxylates. In view of our past work, the flotation characteristics of borax were of particular interest, and, in this regard, the results of dodecyl amine flotation of borax reported by Celik et al. have been examined in further detail in the light of experimental results from our laboratory. In our research, a vacuum flotation technique was used to study the flotation response of borax (Na2B407.10H20), which has a solubility of 39 g/L at 25 °C) with dodecyl amine hydrochloride as collector. These chemicals were purchased from Eastman Kodak and used as received. Saturated solutions of borax at desired pH values were prepared by continuously stirring the salt solutions over a period of about 10 hrs. It should be mentioned that the conditioning time to achieve equilibrium is an important variable and can significantly change the flotation response of some soluble salts (Yalamanchili et al., 1993). Collector was added to the saturated borax solutions containing about one gram of 100x 150 mesh borax particles, and conditioning was done for about 20 minutes prior to flotation. The borax flotation recoveries from saturated brine are presented in Fig. 1 as a function of collector addition at the natural pH of 9.3, as reported both by Celik et al. and as measured in our laboratory. In addition, the region of precipitation for the dodecyl amine hydroborate is included in Fig. 1. It can be seen in Fig. 1 that the flotation response curves are separated by about one order of magnitude in R12NH3CI collector addition. The flotation results of Celik et al. show that the maximum borax recoveries can be obtained below the solubility limit of the dodecyl amine hydroborate collector. However, in our experiments borax flotation seems to occur only after the precipitation of the dodecyl amine hydroborate collector as might be expected from the collector colloid adsorption model (Yalamanchili et al., 1993) if borax were negatively charged. Further analysis by nonequilibrium and equilibrium electrophoretic mobility measurements for borax indicates that borax is negatively charged at the natural pH of 9.3, as discussed below. The reliability of the nonequilibrium electrophoretic measurements has been demonstrated previously for alkali halides and alkali oxyanions (Miller et al., 1992; Miller and Yalamanchili, 1994). The equilibrium and nonequlibrium electrophoretic measurements for borax were found to be consistent and are presented in Table 1. These results provide clear evidence that borax carries a negative surface charge in its saturated brine (pH 9.3), and the sign of the surface charge of borax reverses and becomes positive if the pH is reduced to 8.6. Mine production systems (MPS) are characterized, more or less, by the following properties: uncertainty, subjectivity, impreciseness, polysemy, instability, indefiniteness and lack of data. From modern study aspect these MPS mathematically belong to the class of fuzzy systems. With this in mind, the usage of fuzzy sets is recommended as a methodology that treats impreciseness, indefiniteness and complexity of mine production systems in a satisfactory manner. Fuzzy modelling, discussed in this pa- per, is applied as a mathematical implement. The objective of the paper was to show production optimization in practice on the ex- ample of bauxite open pits where fuzzy linear programming (FLP) was used following the criterion per income. The variables in criterion function are linguistic variables while both variables and variable restrictions are presented by triangular fuzzy numbers (TFN). The term "satisfactory income" presented through triangle fuzzy numbers was introduced instead of "maximizing the income". sensitivity of the obtained solutions has been analysed

This paper reviews the process control systems used in early commercial pelletizing plants, traces the development of these systems into present day practice, and briefly outlines advanced automation concepts being considered for future installations. It deals specifically with controls for the balling circuit, pelletizing machines, and related material handling and combustion equipment. The importance of instruments for visual observation and data logging is discussed, and the potential use of computer control is evaluated.
