Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) is considered carcinogenic after prolonged exposure. With increasing use of diesel-powered mining equipment in underground mines, miner?s exposure to DPM has been increasing. Most studies on the issue has been DPM control measures with few studies on diesel exhaust propagation patterns after leaving the tailpipes. This study uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to investigate the airflow pattern in an underground metal/nonmetal mine for a single heading. Several high DPM concentration areas are identified in the study and common practices for compliance are suggested. Airflow and DPM distribution are compared between blowing and exhausting face ventilation systems. Suggestions are also provided for the protection of miners in the face area.

In this study, the flotation performances of ethoxycarbonyl thionocarbamate (ECTC), dialkyl thionocarbamate (DATC) and xanthate copper sulfide collectors are compared by the structure-reactivity relationship using generalized perturbation theory and density functional calculation at the B3PW91/6-31G(D) level. The electron-donating power of xanthates is strong and, therefore, xanthates can strongly react with metal cation on the surfaces of copper and iron sulfide minerals through the formation of normal covalent bonds. This explains the poor selectivity of xanthates and also the high pH levels (above 13) required for the flotation separation of copper/iron sulfide minerals. DATCs are more selective for copper sulfide flotation, particularly against gangue iron sulfides. Although less powerful than xanthates, DATCs can perform copper/iron flotation separation at lower operating pH (commonly at pH levels below 11.5). ECTCs use an ethoxycarbonyl replacing an alkyl N-substituent in DATCs. The presence of the ethoxycarbonyl group effectively changes the functional group of collector from -C(=S)NH- to -C(=S)NHC(=O)-. The strong electron-withdrawing ethoxycarbonyl group adjacent to the C=S group decreases the electron density of the sulfur atom, which improves ECTC?s selectivity against iron sulfide minerals at slightly alkaline conditions. The lowest unoccupied molecular orbit (LUMO) of ECTC, which is constituted by the pz-orbit of every atoms in the conjugate -O-C(=O)-N-C(=S)-O- group and which is pleased with accepting richly d-orbital electrons (feedback electrons) from the (t2g)6(eg)3Cu(II) or t6e4Cu(I) configuration of copper cation on the surfaces of copper sulfide minerals, resulted in the formation of dative p-bond. The iron atom, which has a (t2g)6Fe(II) or (t2ga)3(ega)2 Fe(III) configuration on the surfaces of iron sulfide minerals (Fe(III) is the predominant composition at alkaline conditions), has difficulty in offering its d-orbital electrons (feedback electrons) to ECTC?s LUMO. ECTC collectors are powerful for copper sulfide minerals and very selective against iron sulfides, which has been further confirmed by UV spectra and bench-scale and industrial-scale flotation tests.

The Galore Creek Mine project is one of the newest major mining projects underdevelopment in Canada. The project is located in a very remote area of northwester British Columbia and is being developed by Nova Gold Resources of Vancouver. The mine project comprises one of the largest and highest grade undeveloped porphyry-related gold-silver-copper deposits in North America. In order to access the mine site anew 120 km road is planned to be constructed including a 4.4 km mine access road tunnel. Glaciers with heavy snow pack cover approximately two-thirds of the tunnel alignment with a maximum cover of 1,200 m. The size of the access road tunnel is about 50 m2 and has been designed as a large single lane road tunnel to accommodate the transport of large size mining equipment for mine start up and ongoing operations. The rock conditions along the tunnel alignment comprise very strong volcanic rocks. Key services for mining operations will be incorporated into the tunnel comprising diesel and power as well as the concentrate pipeline. Structural portal canopies have been incorporated into the tunnel design due to the risk of rockfalls and avalanches in the portal areas. The mine access road tunnel is a significant and critical-path component to the overall project to provide vehicular access to allow construction of the mine site. In order to meet the expected mine start up date the construction of the tunnel works are to commence prior to any other works at the mine site and will be constructed entirely by helicopter support. Geotechnical investigations commenced in the summer of 2006 with the removal of the overburden materials at the portals to assess bedrock conditions. Tunnel construction from both portals is expected to commence in the spring of 2007. The construction of the mine project is subject to and awaiting environmental approval in the spring of 2007. The mine access road tunnel will be the longest private road tunnel in North America. The key design and constructability issues for the mine access road tunnel project are presented and discussed.

The Peñasquito deposit in Mexico is one of the largest grassroots precious metal discoveries developed in recent years. Goldcorp Inc. acquired the gold-silver-lead-zinc property with the acquisition of Glamis in 2006. The Peñasquito property is located in the northeast corner of Zacatecas state, Mexico. The elevation of the property averages 1,900 m (6,200 ft) above sea level. It is situated in a wide east-west valley. Minera Peñasquito, S.A. de C.V., wholly owned subsidiary of Goldcorp Inc. has operated twin SABC-flotation lines since June 2010. Each line is capable of processing 50,000 tonne per day using a SABC grinding circuit followed by flotation to produce lead and zinc concentrates. The addition of a Polysius Polycom HPGR 2417 with dual 3,000 kW drives to reduce the crushed pebbles produced by the SAG mills was planned to increase production to 65,000 tonne per day per line. The production has been limited to 100,000 tpd due to operating issues in the grinding circuit. The operating issue has been the amount of pebbles generated by the SAG mills is significantly less than originally planned. This paper describes the planned installation of a crushed augmented feed to maximize utilization of the HPGR capacity. This coupled with full utilization of the SAG and Ball Mill available energies there is the potential to achieve a 50% total capacity increase from the grinding circuit.

At the start of the 20th century Denver?s population was 203,795. Most streets were unpaved. Buildings were constructed of wood frame or masonry. Transport was by horse-drawn-wagon or rail. Statewide, aggregate consumption was less than 0.25 metric tons per person per year. One hundred years later Denver had a population of 2,365,345. Today Denver is a major metropolitan area at the crossroads of two interstates, home to a new international airport, and in the process of expanding its light rail transit system. The skyline is punctuated with skyscrapers. The urban center is surrounded with edge cities. These changes required huge amounts of aggregate. Statewide, aggregate consumption increased 50 fold to over 13 metric tons per person per year. Denver has a large potential supply of aggregate, but sand and gravel quality decreases downstream from the mountain front and potential sources of crushed stone occur in areas prized for their scenic beauty. These issues, along with urban encroachment and citizen opposition, have complicated aggregate development and have paved a new path for future aggregate development including sustainable resource management and reclamation techniques.

Since the mid-1970s, samples of airborne and waterborne fibrous particulates have been collected in the area of the Northshore Taconite Ore Processing Facility by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (PCA), and the University of Minnesota. Indirect sample preparation has consistently been used although other aspects of the sampling methods and sites have varied and analytical procedures were altered over time as more accurate and precise microscopy methods were developed (i.e., phase contrast optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy). In the mid-1970s, levels of airborne fibrous particulate in the Silver Bay area averaged from 0.00030 to 0.03 f/ml. This level was significantly greater than levels of similar particulates in the St. Paul, MN area, although two of the Silver Bay sampling sites, considered individually, did not indicate levels of fibrous particulate markedly different than that seen in St. Paul. More recent sampling data (i.e., 1990?2001) indicate mean concentration of airborne fibrous particulates (amphibole-like fibrous particulates) of 0.0020 f/ml with a range of values from 0.0001 to 0.0140 f/ml. Such levels are not significantly different from those seen in other non-urban environments in the US and Europe. Concentrations of fibrous particulates in water samples were higher in the mid-1970 when iron ore tailings were being deposited in Lake Superior, but since the tailings have been deposited on land waterborne levels of fibrous particulate in the Beaver River have remained relatively constant averaging in the range of 7.5 MFL. This level is only slightly in excess of the current EPA drinking water standard for fibrous particulates. Review and consideration of this data is important in determining the potential health risks associated with airborne and waterborne fibrous particulates in the areas of the Northshore Taconite Ore Processing Facility. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Design considerations and construction techniques were implemented to address groundwater infiltration from a confined aquifer during the excavation and lining of the Cady Marsh Flood Relief Tunnel. This 3-m finished diameter, 2-km long tunnel was successfully completed cost-effectively in an urban setting near East Chicago, Indiana. The soft ground was mined using a conventional tunnel boring machine with hydraulically actuated flood doors and supported with steel ribs and timber lagging. The tunnel was lined with cast-in-place concrete. Dewatering was implemented in settlement prone, boulder-laden ground in residential neighborhoods during construction to depressurize and partially dewater the aquifer at the tunnel horizon. This paper describes the design decisions and construction methods utilized to mitigate and limit infiltration into the tunnel during construction and operation, as well as manage ground settlement.

Editor’s note: This is the second part of a two-part series on how mine geologists added about 141t (4.53 million oz) at Newmont Mining’s gold operations in Nevada during 2003. Part one (ME, July2004, pp. 19-26) showed how cross-functional teamwork among mine geologists, engineers, metallurgists and operators added $65 million in revenues at Newmont’s Gold Quarry Mine. Part two deals with how this same cross-functional team added about 25.8 t (830,000 oz) of gold reserves and two years of life at the company’s LoneTree Mine. This was done through improved reconciliation methods, pit optimization designs and updated geotechnical parameters. Part two also discusses how Newmont’s Nevada mine personnel added about 62.2 t (2 million oz) of gold reserves at its Twin Creeks Mine, extending the mine’s life by several years. Exploration record In preparing this paper, a list of world class discoveries prepared in 1983 has been updated. In both surveys, the following criteria were used in the definition of world class discoveries: • deposits that are continuously operated and consistently return a profit even in periods of low metal prices; • deposits large enough to significantly affect a medium sized corporation's profits; and • these deposits should be in the lower one-third cost per unit of metal produced for all similar deposits. Only 70 discoveries in the last 40 years qualified as world class deposits using these criteria. Unfortunately, this restricted population was too low to develop meaningful trends. The numbers were therefore enlarged to include all significant discoveries. The principal feature of a significant discovery is that its size and grade would yield more than $500 million in revenue using average metal prices for the last five years. A significant deposit should also meet some of the standards for a world class deposit. A tabulation of these deposits are shown in Table 1. The number of discoveries increased to 166 from 70 using the revised classification. The relationship between the number of discoveries per year and their location by continents was prepared from these data. Figure 1 shows the number of discoveries per year for the nonCommunist world. It also shows estimated and actual nonCommunist world exploration expenditures per year and the commodity price index. These data show that modern exploration started in the late 1940s, with the tempo picking up rapidly in the 1950s. The maximum discovery rate occurred in 1962. Thereafter, the discovery rate gradually declined to the present. This occurred despite a real increase in expenditures from about $200 million/a in 1955 (1982 constant dollars) to more than $900 million/a in 1980. Thus, these data suggest a significant decrease in the exploration success ratio (total exploration expenditures a year divided by the number of significant discoveries) in the last 20 years. As an example, $70 million was spent for each significant discovery in the early 1960s as compared with $225 million in the late 1970s (expressed in 1982 constant dollars). However, with the general declining trend of discoveries, one can perceive a more pronounced drop in 1973 and then a sudden increase in 1974, 1975, and 1976. This increase is probably related to the inflation of the 1970s that in turn created an environment for the explosion of commodity prices, as shown by the commodity price index on Fig. 1. Thereafter, the decline in discoveries resumed in 1975 until the present. Exploration performance by regions North American discoveries are shown in Fig. 2. The graph shows three pronounced high discovery peaks in 1962, 1975, and 1980-81.

Accident data indicates that mobile haulage poses a significant pinning, crushing, and striking risk. Proximity detection systems (PDSs) have the potential to protect mineworkers from these risks. However, unintended consequences of mobile PDSs can undermine the safety benefit they provide. Soliciting iterative user input can improve the design process. Users help provide a critical understanding of how mobile PDSs may hinder normal operation and endanger mineworkers. Researchers explored users’ perspectives by conducting interviews with mineworkers from seven mines that have installed mobile PDSs on some of their haulage equipment. Mineworkers reported that mobile PDSs affect loading, tramming, section setup, maintenance, and general work on the section. Mineworkers discussed the operational effects and increased burden, exposure, and risk. Mineworkers also suggested that improved task compatibility, training, logistics, and PDS performance might help address some of these identified issues. This paper also gives additional insights into mobile PDS design and implementation.

Flow rate into the thickener or clarifier a) As the flow rate increases into the thickener or clarifier ?retention time? decreases which causes a greater affect hydraulically on the settling solids. So as the flow rate increases it will generally mean an increase in flocculant dosing rate. b) As the flow rate decreases into the thickener or clarifier the retention time increases which reduces the hydraulic affect on settling, improving settling rates. This will generally mean that as the flow rate decreases, we will decrease the flocculant dose rate.

Mine planners must select a single pit for design with the knowledge that the grades on which this selection is made are uncertain. This uncertainty is often ignored through the use of deterministic models of grade. This makes the mine planner?s job simpler but does not necessarily lead to the ?correct? or ?best? selection. Grade uncertainty is typically modelled with conditional simulation which generates multiple possible realisations of grade that are equally probable (or improbable) to occur. Methods for incorporating grade uncertainty into mine planning to date have either been perceived as being too complicated, not accessible or too time consuming. This paper proposes a simple and efficient modelling approach to incorporating conditional simulation into pit optimisation, which would be able to be applied in currently commercially software. An example for Resolute Mining Ltd?s Syama Gold Project in Mali shows the range of ore, grade and value outcomes associated with generating pits through a variety of methods.

Large amounts of manganese-rich slag were generated from smelting low-grade manganese ore containing high iron and high phosphorus in electric furnace or blast furnace, which contain 25–40 mass% Mn. This paper describes an efficient hydrometallurgical process for the utilization of high manganese slag instead of conventional usage of pyrometallurgical route for manganese recovery. Pressure acid leaching of manganese-rich slag using air as pressurized gas is studied systematically. The effects of mass ratio of manganese-rich slag to pyrite, concentration of sulfuric acid, leaching temperature, partial air pressure, leaching time, and liquid-solid (L/S) ratio on the separation of manganese with other main impurity components were investigated comprehensively. Under the following optimal process conditions, weight of manganese-rich slag powder,100 g; mass ratio of manganese-rich slag to pyrite, 20:1; sulfuric acid concentration of 140 g/L; air pressure of 0.6 MPa; leaching temperature of 140 °C; leaching time of 1 h; L/S of 7:1; ore size of 75–80 μm; and stirring rate of 600 rpm, the extraction rate of Mn reached 94%, and the dissolution percentage of Si, Al, and Fe are as low as 2%, 6%, and 10%, respectively. The leaching slurry presented a good solid-liquid separation characteristic. The silicic acid formed during sulfuric acid leaching manganese silicates was converted to filterable dehydrated SiO2 particles which precipitated in the residue under the condition of higher temperature with higher pressure. The effect of adding pyrite may be to reduced iron ions and decreased the output of iron hydroxide colloid and also reduced MnO2 to manganese sulfate in sulfuric acid leaching. Thus the formation possibility of colloid such as silica gel and iron hydroxide was decreased, and higher yield of manganese sulfate could be achieved.

The EPA inspectors may consist of a multi-media team deployed to review systems and procedures for EPCRA Sections 302, 304, 311, and 312. The Team’s focus may include emergency response plans, training programs, qualifications of personnel, and release notification protocols. This presentation takes a look at the EPCRA compliance challenges faced by Arizona copper mining and processing facilities.

All aspects of precious metals processing were featured at a symposium held Oct. 3-6, 2007, at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, AZ. Although billed as "Precious Metals Processing: Advances in Primary and Secondary Operations," the symposium also looked at economic, regulatory and environmental issues affecting the precious metals industry. The symposium was sponsored by SME; The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS); and the International Precious Metals Institute (IPMI). It included workshops, technical presentations, guest speakers and social activities. Mining industry management, process engineers, equipment manufacturers, consultants, metals marketers, academics and others involved in the precious metals industry attended the conference. Needless to say, with gold nearing $25.721g ($800/oz) and platinum pushing $41.801g ($1,300/oz) at the time of the meeting, the mood among the attendees could not have been more positive. The symposium was privileged to have Father Ernest S. Sweeney, professor of Latin American History at Loyola Marymount University, as a guest speaker. Sweeney, a Jesuit priest, provided a colorful account of the history of mining in Arizona and the surrounding region of North America (Fig. 1). He described the importance of the mining industry and said, "To go down into the bowels of the earth to extract its riches for the benefit of all of us is an awesome task deserving our sincere respect and gratitude." However, he warned the industry that: "The ever increasing de¬mands on the mining community for the protection of the environment calls for endless efforts to maintain ethical standards in a business filled with risk, uncertainty and frustrations." Sweeney noted that the Spanish conquest of the Americas was driven by the three fundamental motives of "God, glory and gold." He noted that gold was the basic, most powerful driving force of the conquest and occupation of the Spanish empire. The first European to explore Arizona was the Franciscan missionary Marcos de Niza. He came to Arizona in 1539 in search of the fabled Seven Golden Cities of Cíbola. Sweeny noted that Spanish explorers were consumed, as Cortes himself described it, "with a burning fever that only gold could cure." Sweeney told the story of some of these early explorers, including Francisco Vázquez de Coronado who "mounted an expedition in pursuit of gold and rich empires to conquer." Coronado passed through Arizona and discovered the Grand Canyon. "Coronado returned to Mexico exhausted, bankrupt and disillusioned, but with a wealth of new knowledge of the borderlands of the Spanish empire," said Sweeney. He then described the colorful history of early gold, silver and copper exploration and mining in Arizona, including the famous tale of the Lost Dutchman's Mine. Traditionally, the choice amongst different upgrading techniques or in finding the optimum operating conditions for a given upgrading technology depends on whether one is looking at the grade or the recovery of the valuable mineral in the concentrate. In fact, the conclusions are not usually the same. This is because the best technique or optimum operating conditions for the highest grade are not the same as the conditions to achieve the maxi-mum recovery. Therefore, a unique measure that takes into consideration both grade and recovery is urgently needed. Finding such a measure is the objective of this paper. A proposed measure provides a selectivity index in the range of 0 to 1, where 0 is no selectivity and 1 is ideal selectivity. The index can be obtained by plotting the so-called Fuerstenau upgrading curve, which relates the recoveries of the components in products of separation and a running regression applying a one-parameter equation. The measure was applied to assess the selectivity of selective flocculation under different operating conditions when used as a sensitive upgrading technique for ultrafine ground ores. After applying the proposed selectivity measure in the case of the selective flocculation of ultrafine Egyptian iron ore without the addition of cations, it was found that the optimum conditions are pH 11, 1 kg/t sodium silicate and 0.4 kg/t potato starch with a selectivity index of 0.55. With the addition of cations, the optimum conditions were found to be pH 11, 1 kg/t sodium silicate and 2 kg/t potato starch with a selectivity index of 0.65. It should be noted that determining these optimum conditions using the traditional grade or recovery measures was highly ambiguous.

Contract 240 of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link comprises construction of twin4.7 km long running tunnels through a densely populated area of East London. The tunnels were constructed by EPBM in Sands and Sandy Clays, passing 4.4 m below the existing London Underground tunnels, and at depths of 20–30m below ground level beneath the Great Eastern railway lines into London Liverpool Street and a series of railway bridges and hundreds of buildings. This paper describes how the project team managed the challenges relating to the issue of settlement: mitigating settlement effects, prioritising the structures to be assessed, controlling resource expenditure by incentives and flexible response to urgent work relating to unforeseen events such as ground collapse and discovery of unusual structures.

INTRODUCTION Crude oil reserves in the United States are still very large, even though for many years they have not been sufficient to supply our entire domestic requirements. They are continuously being depleted as oil is pumped from the ground, but new discoveries and improved secondary and tertiary recovery methods are helping to reduce the rate of depletion. It is thus a slowly diminishing resource, but even as it is being consumed, immense reserves of oil are left behind as the so called "un-recoverable" portion of petroleum formations. Most oil fields can only obtain a 15 to 40% recovery of the original reservoir, and it is widely quoted that there are still about 300 billion barrels of this un-recoverable oil still in place (Mauch, 1980, etc.). With the present comparatively high oil prices, and the possibility of even higher future prices and short supply, this oil becomes an interesting potential reserve. Mining the petroleum formation would be one means of recovering at least a portion of this oil. The concept of oil mining is neither new nor limited to conventional oil fields, since the procedure could be equally employed with the otherwise difficult to produce heavy oil deposits, and the solid or semi-solid tar sands and diatomaceous hydrocarbon formations. Estimates place the U.S. tar sand resource at about 30 billion barrels, and heavy oil at 5-10 billion barrels (Unitar, 1982). Figure 1 graphically summarizes the heavy oil reserves based upon formation depth and characteristics, while Figure 2 shows their location.
