Today Li-ion batteries are considered as one of the most attractive available energy storage solutions. However in order to overcome environmental, legislative and economic issues, the management of used batteries has to be considered and mainly the recycling. The present paper deals with the recycling of used Li-ion batteries and the recovery of high value metals from active materials of electrodes. Lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA) and lithium manganese nickel magnesium oxide (LMNM) cathodes, which contain most of valuable elements typically used in the composition of active materials for Li-ion batteries are investigated by a hydrometallurgy route. The process is divided into two steps: the materials leaching and the elements recovery by a selective chemical separation. Some experimental parameters (acid nature, concentration, time and temperature) are studied to determine the most efficient conditions of dissolution. Then, the valuable elements such as nickel, cobalt and manganese are selectively recovered with a high efficiency close to 100 % and with a high purity by precipitation. By this study, an adaptable hydrometallurgy process can be defined according to the composition of Li-ion batteries to recycle.

"Compound casting is a very attractive approach to reduce the weight of components for some specific applications while keep both the functional and the mechanical property requirements. In this work, Al-7Si-Mg alloy /copper compound castings were produced through a low pressure die casting process. To reduce the oxide present in the interface, flux coating of the copper pipes was tested. The interface layer formed between the two alloys was investigated using Optical Microscopy (OM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Vickers Micro-hardness was also measured across the interface. Results showed that the flux coating prevented the formation of the metallic bond between copper and aluminum. Instead, high concentrations of potassium, magnesium and fluoride, coinciding with formation of KMgF3 and MgF2, were detected in the interface. In the castings without surface treatment, a continuous metallurgical bond was achieved. In the bond layer, various Al-Cu intermetallic phases have been detected. In addition, formation of primary silicon particles in the reaction layer was observed in all castings. The mechanism for the formation of the intermetallic phases and the strength of the interface layer have been discussed.INTRODUCTION Recent development in the automotive industry has focused on producing lightweight components, which can reduce CO2 emission and increase the efficiency. Often, one material alone is not able to meet the requirements for a specific use. The need for lightweight bimetallic components has therefore increased. Aluminum-copper bimetallic components can be used in wires and bus bars where conductivity is an important factor (Lee, Bang, & Jung, 2005). Compared to Al-Cu alloys, Al-Cu bimetallic components can reduce both weight and cost without reducing electrical and thermal conductivity (Sheng, Yang, Xi, Lai, & Ye, 2011). A challenge is, however, that aluminum and copper have high affinity to each other, especially at elevated temperatures. This causes formation of brittle intermetallic phases with high electric resistance (Liu, Wang, Sui, Wang, & Wenjiang, 2016). In addition, both metals are subjected to oxide formation on the surface. Copper is especially exposed to oxidation at elevated temperatures (Pinnel, Tompkins, & Heath, 1979), while a thermodynamically stable oxide layer will spontaneously form on the aluminum surface (Papis, Loeffler, & Uggowitzer, 2009). Oxides are known to be passive substrates, which will reduce wettability and will thus prevent the formation of metallic bonding between aluminum and copper (Papis, Hallstedt, Löffler, & Uggowitzer, 2008)."

"There has been a continuous evolution with the use of pre-cast concrete elements in the construction of aluminum smelters. In 1990, Phase I of Alouette was built using cast-in-place concrete exclusively. Whereas, other AP 30 technology plants such as Hillside 2 in the mid-1990s used pre-cast concrete beams with cast-in-place floors. Mozal 2, in 2002, used pre-cast concrete beams with pre-cast partial-slab operating floors. Alouette Phase II went further. Not only were the potroom building beams and floors pre-cast, but the entire pot support system, insulating walls and basement jersey walls were pre-cast. Once the techniques for bending and welding the reinforcement bars and the design for attaching electrical insulating plates to the concrete was perfected, the challenge for the project remained only in the logistics of transporting the pieces to site and simple erection. The overall impact on the project was dramatic. Using prefabricated concrete not only allowed advancement of the schedule, but totally eliminated formwork, re-bar installation, and form removal activities along with the handling of all the materials involved with these activities. With the elimination of these labour and material-intensive portions of the job, exposure to work injuries was dramatically reduced. The most prevalent activity for lost time accidents is during the rough work associated with concrete formwork, placing concrete and form removal. Another area where prefabricated elements were successfully used on Alouette Phase II was for the insulating walls enclosing the pot area, known as the ""claustra walls"". Usually these walls are constructed in-situ using mortar and breeze block. Success was also achieved with prefabrication of the perimetric walls that are installed at the lower floor of the potroom. A big advantage of using prefabricated concrete in the electrolysis area is in assuring electrical isolation for the operating floors. The production of low- and medium-Btu gas from coal provides a more economic source of energy for most industrial users than pipeline-quality coal gas (SNG), although the latter has received more publicity. The paper reviews existing and advanced methods of coal gasification, with particular emphasis on the production of low- and medium Btu gas for industrial and utility use. Some of the ways in which coal gasification can be integrated into power cycles and industrial plant energy balances are discussed.

"A surge bin at Agrium’s Vanscoy potash operations has been plagued with flow, wear, and corrosion issues since being built in 1967. The culprits? The bin’s carbon-steel construction, geometry, and the resultant funnel-flow pattern are the root causes. An investigation and cost analysis indicated that hopper redesign and retrofit would increase production and reduce maintenance and capital costs. The retrofitted bin provides safer, more reliable operation and has a much longer predicted working life. Using this example, the authors describe bulk-solids-flow theory and highlight the importance of customizing bulk-material-handling-system design using appropriate flow properties to improve reliability, safety, and cost effectiveness.RÉSUMÉ Depuis sa construction en 1967, un réservoir intermédiaire de l’exploitation de potasse Vanscoy d’Agrium connaît des problèmes de débit, d’usure et de corrosion. Les responsables ? La construction en acier ordinaire du réservoir, sa géométrie et la structure de débit en résultant au niveau de la carotte en sont les causes fondamentales. (J&J) to provide testing, consulting, and structural engineering services related to proposed modifications to the 270 t special standard product surge bin, which Agrium planned to undertake during a two-week shutdown in August 2013. The bin, which had been plagued with flow, wear, and corrosion issues for its entire working life, was essential for the continuous operation of two of VPO’s compaction plants and for efficient dispatching to loadout. The bin often experienced product hang-ups, clumping on the walls, and plugging at the hopper outlet. Two recent unscheduled mill shutdowns had been partially attributed to flow issues in the bin due to clumping and product plugging up at the screws. These problems increased maintenance costs, limited production capacity, and degraded product quality. Holes and paper-thin sections in the bin walls discovered during a 2013 inspection revealed the potential for major hot material leaks or even structural failure. Either issue would stop plant operations until the bin could be repaired or bypassed. Clearly, the bin cone had reached the end of its life and required replacement."

"High narrow backfills of significant strike length approach the stress conditions associated with a free standing wall but this lower bound design approach is not considered efficient for earth structures. This paper considers the design of high narrow backfills using upper bound limit analysis, retaining wall theory with backfill arching and centrifuge model tests. Complex toe support situations pertaining to operational factors at Falconbridge's Lockerby Mine are investigated. It is shown that the susceptibility of high narrow fills to toppling is much lower than anticipated from the retaining wall analysis and that toppling can be avoided by a suitable toe support. It is also concluded that adhesion between the fill and an adjacent pillar can markedly increase the stability of the fill. INTRODUCTIONFalconbridge's Lockerby Mine pillar projects will expose cemented tailings backfills to heights (H) up to 55 m. The exposed backfills may have strike lengths (L) greater than the heights but are relatively narrow, having widths (w) of up to 12 m. The bulk cement content of the fills varies from 8.3% (12.1 T:C) to 3.0% (33.1 T:C). Exposed faces may have up to a metre of overhang due to stope overblasting, as shown in Figure 1. These fills have a solids specific gravity of close to 3.0 and were placed at a pulp density of about 68%. The tailings have a fairly uniform grain size with 32% less than 0.075 mm (200 sieve) and about 12% slimes (less than 0.02 mm sizes). The fill exposed by early pillar removal will be backed by adjacent, near vertical, ore pillars. Future pillar removal may expose similar fills which are not supported by an adjacent ore pillar but which will be backed by either an open void or by uncemented backfill. Furthermore, these fills may be undercut when the pillar slot is driven, further reducing stability (case 3, Fig. I) or a wedge could be left to help support the fill (case 2, Fig . 1). This paper presents limit equilibrium analyses for these various backfill conditions in a 22: 1 T:C fill and com- pares the results to data from centrifuge model studies at a scale factor of A= 157 as indicated in Figure I. Prototype fills have a 6 m deep cone plug of 16:1 T:C which is accounted for in the comparison of centrifuge model test with analytical results."

"Like other operating mine sites, Placer Dome Inc. - Campbell Mine has taken important steps over the last few years to address environmental issues.This paper will provide specific insights into the implementation of an environmental management system at Campbell. In particular, it will focus on how Campbell developed its plan of action; the lessons that have been learned; the over-all steps that are being taken to enhance environmental stewardship and effectively manage relationships with key stakeholders.IntroductionThe development of an Environmental Management System at Campbell Mine has been part of a general development in management practices which has taken place at the mine during 1990. This paper will discuss the components of the management system in the topic areas of: direction setting; environmental organization; issue assessment; emergency response plan; training ; monitoring/verification; reporting and data management; and relationship management.Although this paper focuses on environmental management systems, the development of this system has partly been a function of responses to other issues which have been addressed concurrently with environmental concerns. These other issues include development of operations management, human resources practices, and safety management practices at the mine. As the Environmental Management System developed, various stakeholders associated with local environmental concerns were identified. This group of stakeholders include the local community; municipal, provincial and federal governments; government agencies; Campbell employees; and the Placer Dome Inc. Corporation."

"IntroductionCyanidation is the principal process for extracting gold from ores . Many primary gold ores, however, are partially or totally refractory in the conventional cyanidation process.Considerable success has been achieved with new gold leaching techniques, such as intensive cyanidation, pressure cyanidation, carbon-in-leach cyanidation, etc. These techniques however, do not offer substantial gains in gold extraction from refractory pyrites.The more drastic pretreatment processes such as roasting, chemical oxidation, autoclave oxidation, and bacterial oxidation all utilize oxidation to break down the structures of pyrite and arsenopyrite. This generally renders the gold amenable to cyanidation.Comparative cost studies indicate that the oldest commercial pretreatment method, i.e. high temperature roasting, is currently the least expensive option if the sulphuric acid can be sold. It operates with air at atmospheric pressure and is characterized by fast reaction rates. For an alternative hydrometallurgical con centrate treatment method to be competitive, it too should operate with air at atmospheric pressure and with fast reaction rates. The NITROX process meets these conditions."

The Zhezkazgan copper sulfide ore deposit in Kazakhstan contains both rhenium and the rare osmium isotope "osmium-187" (187Os) in the high isotopic purity of 99.4 ± 0.2%. This isotope is believed to have originated as a result of the disintegration of one of the rhenium isotopes, according to the reaction: 187Re75 ?> 1870576 + B- + v~ (where B is a 13-particle, v~ is a 3-disintegration antineutrino). The distribution of osmium and rhenium in metallurgical byproducts produced during the recovery of copper from these ores has been studied and process flowsheets for the processing of rhenium and osmium-containing byproducts have been developed.

In this paper, we report on the detection of spectral molecular emission of iron oxide (FeO) and copper oxide (CuxO) emitted by reactions occurring in a laboratory scale flash smelting process of pyrite (FeS2) as well as copper concentrate. The novelty of the technique is that, the molecular spectral emission sensing is achieved by using a low spectral resolution and low sensitive radiometer, enhanced with signal processing and matrix factorization techniques. The method was validated using a highly sensitive spectrometer, with a high spectral resolution; achieving a similar FeO spectral pattern as the one obtained after signal processing techniques over low resolution spectral signals. INTRODUCTION Visible-near infrared (VIS-NIR) spectroscopy is an optical contactless sensing technique commonly used to capture information about the emitted, absorbed, transmitted or scattered radiation in a physical or chemical process, with the presence or absence of an excitation light source such as a laser or a broad spectral band source. These techniques coupled with signal processing and machine learning algorithms, sometimes referred as chemometrics (Pisapia et al., 2018), can be found in processes such as: pharmaceutical (Kandpal et al., 2016); food (Coelho et al., 2016); combustion (Ballester & García-Armingol, 2010); siderurgy (Strakowski et al., 2014) industry, among others. In the extractive copper industry there are several technological developments using optical sensing techniques aimed to retrieve information about copper ore and concentrate mineralogical composition such as X-Ray Fluorescence, Qemscan® (Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by Scanning Electron Microscopy) and X Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis, however, because of the manual procedures to analyze the samples with these laboratory instrumentation, only discrete information during a daily based operation can be retrieved, making impossible for the operators to take decisions over the involved processes in real time. The aim of our research work presented here is to contribute with sensing and data analysis procedures based on VIS-NIR spectroscopy for the flash smelting process characterization, particularly in this paper, with the detection of FeO and CuxO molecular emissions in a laboratory scale setup.

"Bay d'Espoir is in the approximate center of the south coast of Newfoundland. The geology of the area can most conveniently be considered in terms of three units: (1) an Ordovician or older polydeformed terrain termed the Little Passage Gneisses; (2) a Lower-Middle Ordovician volcano-sedimentary sequence assigned to the Baie d'Espoir Group; and (3) granitoid intrusive rocks of mid-Paleozoic age. Mineralizing events accompanied the formation of the latter two units.The Baie d'Espoir Group comprises a dominantly sedimentary sequence of pre-Middle Ordovician shelf and distal turbidite sediments deposited on the eastern margin of Iapetus. A significant volcanic component is, however, present in the Isle Galet Formation, consisting of up to 30% felsic volcanic rocks interbedded with sedimentary and epiclastic rocks. The Isle Galet Formation hosts several disseminated to thinly bedded Pb-Zn-Ag occurrences associated with altered felsic tuff and graphitic shale. They occasionally grade laterally into pyrite iron formation and appear to have been deposited in a very distal volcanic environment. The Isle Galet Formation is a time equivalent of the mineralized pre-Caradocian island-arc sequences of central Newfoundland, but differs from them both in style of volcanism and in the nature of the associated mineral deposits. It is, however, comparable in many respects to mineralized volcanic sequences in the La Poile Bay area of southwestern Newfoundland.Mineralization associated with granitoid rocks in Bay d'Espoir is best developed around the southeast margin of the North Bay Granite, where two-mica leucogranite forms a marginal phase. Numerous minor base metal showings occupy quartz, quartz-carbonate and barite veins in the adjacent sedimentary rocks. Collectively, the showings exhibit a well-developed, zonal pattern around the granite margin; molybdenite (±py, cpy) predominates near the contact, giving way outward to galena (±sph, py, asp, cpy) and eventually to stibnite (±asp, py) at the periphery. Mineralization associated with granites in similar settings elsewhere in southern Newfoundland includes tungsten in the Grey River and Granite Lake areas and molybdenite in the Rencontre Lake area."

For city smelters, with limited real estate, efficient slag cleaning furnaces followed by water granulation to produce an iron silicate product is the preferred process approach. Water granulation, however, consumes large volumes of water and requires high maintenance due to abrasive slag/water slurries. Air granulation offers an alternative to water granulation, which eliminates water use and has low maintenance requirements. Although full-scale operation has not been implemented for copper slags, full-scale operation for platinum group metal (PGM) converter slag has been implemented. A review of full-scale air granulation performance for PGM converter slag is provided. Based on PGM converter slag granulation performance, parallels to copper slag granulation are drawn and full-scale operation for copper slag is modelled using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). INTRODUCTION Typical slag management practices in the copper industry include dumping, slow air cooling, and water granulation, as shown in Figure 1. Dumping is the most commonly used slag handling method for most metal production plants, but presents challenges including the requirement for a large slag pit, requirement for expensive/high-maintenance “hot” mobile equipment, risks associated with transportation of molten slag, and no value recovery from slag as a sellable by-product or from slag as a source of heat.

"The QR gold deposit lies in the Cariboo plateau region of central British Columbia. The deposit was discovered in 1977 and since then a mineable reserve of 1.3 million tonnes grading 4.7 g/t Au has' been outlined in three separate zones. Soil sampling of glacial tills followed by diamond drilling of favourable host rocks proved to be key exploration techniques.The deposit is situated in the southern Quesnel terrane along the eastern fringe of the Intermontane Belt which here comprises a sequence of basic and intermediate volcanics and a series of stocks of alkaline affinity; generally diorite, monzonite and syenite. Hornfels and epidote-rich ferromagnesian exoskarn and sulphide-rich mantos have developed in a metamorphic aureole formed around a central diorite stock. Gold-rich zones lie along the outer periphery of the aureole where bodies of gold-bearing epidote-rich skarn and auriferous mantos rich in epidote and pyrite have formed in beds of calcareous tuffite lying at the top of a thick basaltic sequence. The deposit is regarded as' a subclass of gold skarn deposits. Diagnostic features are its association with alkalic intrusive rocks in a subvolcanic setting and the presence of oxidized, epidote-rich mineral assemblages.IntroductionThe QR gold deposit lies within the Cariboo plateau region of central British Columbia, 58 km southeast of Quesnel. The deposit, owned by Kinross Gold, was discovered during a regional reconnaissance program by Dome Exploration (Canada) Limited and Newconex Canadian Exploration in 1977. "The correlation obtained by plotting pH of maximum adsorption of dextrin versus the isoelectric point of involved metal hydroxides can be used to predict the depressing effect of dextrin on flotation in ""pure"" sulfide mineral systems. Sulfides are strongly depressed by dextrin whenever their surfaces are coated by the corresponding metal hydroxide. The efficiency of dextrin as a depressant is affected by the adsorption of the sulfhydryl collector. Hydrolyzable cations modify this relationship in flotation of sulfide ores. This type of deviation of the real-life systems from the predictions based on the behavior of the pure systems shows the possible ways that could be followed to further improve the obtained correlations. "A method is described for determining the viability of hard rock orebody extraction by block caving. Using a very limited amount of geotechnical data, the procedure enhances Laubscher’s empirical stability graph method by using the complex structural modelling system (ChaSM) to assess cavability and block cave tonnages.IntroductionIn considering the selection of suitable mining methods, block caving has gained popularity over other extraction systems in recent years (Butcher, 1999). This has been ascribed to the fact that block caving is the lowest cost per ton mining method, with orebodies that were in the past considered unsuitable for caving, now being successfully mined. However, even though all orebodies will cave, a problem exists in the evaluation of economic viability — it is necessary to be able to predict both when the orebody will cave and what will be the sizes of the initial ore fragments (and the associated tonnages) that report to the drawpoints. This problem is compounded by the fact that, during the scoping study phase of a project, only limited geotechnical data may exist on which to base an assessment of whether block caving is viable or not. Empirical and numerical methods of cavability assessment do not account for the full effects of geological discontinuity trace lengths, nor for the stress regime. Those require significant geotechnical data to be available. The result is that uncertainty may exist as to whether block caving is an economic option. This uncertainty is complicated by the fact that limited experience exists with the caving of more competent orebodies.This paper describes a method for assessing cavability, and for predicting the size of initial ore fragments and the tonnages reporting to block cave drawpoints, using only the level of data normally available during a scoping study. Fragment size and tonnages are assessed by identifying potentially unstable blocks and wedges in the undercut back using statistical joint data. The effects of lateral confining stresses are accounted for by comparing the in situ stress orientations with the joint orientations. To evaluate the accuracy of the method, a back analysis exercise was conducted to predict cavability and initial tonnage for a mine in which the actual behaviour is known. The method is then applied to cavability and tonnage predictions for a hard rock orebody."

"ANFO has two major disadvantages as an explosive low density and no water resistance. ANFO can be blended with more dense, water-resistant explosives to form ""Heavy ANFO"". The use of emulsion or slurry explosives as a matrix is an attempt to correct deficiencies on the basic ANFO while maintaining cost effectiveness.This paper will deal with four main topics.1. Product description, general properties, strengths and weaknesses.2. Technology of ""Heavy ANFO"" , the emulsion matrix concept and the range of products.3. Relative performance and economics in various rock types.4: Current status in Canada and worldwide, and the expectations for future use.IntroductionANFO has been in use for roughly three decades and remains the explosive of choice where conditions are suitable. ANFO has not become the universal explosive - despite its undoubted superiority in cost effectiveness - because it has serious flaws as an explosive. The most serious of these flaws are the low density and absence of water resistance in ANFO. Low density implies a low concentration of explosive energy in a borehole. The amount of energy available can be increased by. adding an energetic material, generally aluminum, or by drilling more holes. Both solutions add considerably to the over-all costs. The absence of water resistance in ANFO is inherent and can only be overcome by changing the fundamental nature of the product. The history of research in the explosives industry since the advent of ANFO is mainly the story of the various attempts to overcome one or both of ANFO's shortcomings.Many technologies and products have been developed to compete against ANFO, among them slurries, emulsion s and the so-called Dense ANFOs (ANFO with an extra nitroalkane liquid sensitizer). None of them was cost-competitive with ANFO so their market penetration has been limited to wet holes or specialized applications. The exception to this result is Heavy ANFO. The aim here was to have the best of both worlds, the high density and water resistance of emulsions or slurries plus the low cost of ANFO. The concept is very simple. ANFO is about 50 % air, roughly 30% in the prills and 700,10 between the prills . The air in the prills provides the necessary sensitivity but the air between them is waste volume. If one fills this volume with a high density, waterproof product, the resultant mix will be denser and more water resistant than ANFO and with very little added cost. This basic concept was invented by B. Clay in the 1970s and is covered by Canadian Patent No. 1 115 959. The water resistance and/or density of the mix can be tailored by changing the emulsion level. Because Heavy ANFO is relatively inexpensive while providing good in-hole densities and water resistance, it can compete successfully against all other bulk products. It competes against ANFO and Al / ANFO by allowing pattern expansion and reducing over-all costs while it competes against emulsions and slurries on price."

"This paper presents a summary compilation of current Canadian coal research projects in the areas of exploration, mining and preparation. The compilation forms the basis for a review of present operations and technology, and of current research efforts. General research areas, requirements and priorities are suggested along with a discussion on achieving the research goals in terms of funds, facilities and staff. The current level of research funding in these areas is assessed. IntroductionCanada's coal production is expected to undergo major expansion over the next two decades in response to domestic demands on coal for electrical power generation, industrial uses and conversion to synthetic .fuels, and in response to export demands for both thermal and metallurgical coal s. Surface mining will continue to dominate, but underground mining will contribute an increasing proportion to total production.In Canada, coal research, particularly in the areas of exploration, mining and preparation (E, M & P), has been limited. Increased impetus has recently been given to this research with expansion of CANMET's activities and with the establishment of the Coal Mining Research Centre (CMRC). University researchers are branching into coal research; strata mechanics and preparation are popular in mining-related fields.With the increase in number of organizations and individuals involved in coal research, a means of keeping abreast of the ongoing work is necessary. An annual summary of the status of and developments in current research assists in providing this information. The CMRC prepared such a summary for Canadian coal E, M & P research in 1979 and it received favourable response, justifying the effort. A 1980compilation has been prepared and pro vides the basis for this paper; it is presented with a brief discussion on background, format and content.The compilation forms a basis for an examination of the current status of Canadian technology in E, M & P and of the ongoing research in each area. General research requirements are reviewed and programs and tasks are suggested, followed by a discussion of research goals in term s of priorities and achievement. An assessment is made of the level of research funding in Canada, with comparisons drawn from the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia."

"The Western Research Centre (WRC) of CANMET operate a unique pilot plant facility where ongoing R&D on coal preparation and mineral processing is conducted. The pilot plant carries out two functions: coal preparation processing using state-of-the art technology and coal-liquid mixture preparation with intensive cleaning circuits that can also be used for mineral processing. In total, the pilot plant includes more than 30 different flowsheet options. The facility is dedicated to small and fine coal, and designed to be flexible and versatile.This paper describes the use of a pilot-scale facility as a research tool for process control development, fine coal beneficiation, development of coal-liquid fuels technologies, development of process models and testing and evaluation of new developments. The pilot plant is used to assist in resource development by evaluating and optimizing flowsheet selection, and producing sufficient samples for utilization tests. The facility is also an important tool for evaluating and testing samples from troublesome circuits of operating plants to find means to optimize and improve recovery, particularly of fines circuits.Detailed examples are given to demonstrate the role of a pilot scale facility in coal preparation R&D, coal industry development and optimization of coal processing operations. These examples include the development of heavy-medium cyclone computer control system, detailed evaluation of beneficiation of a coal deposit with high clay content, development of column flotation, and its role in fine cleaning circuits and treatment of ultra-fines in relation to intensive cleaning, the importance of testing coals in different processes, and cleaning processes influence on coking quality and other utilization applications. The potential of the facility for helping the mineral industry is also described."

In the present study, AA6016 automotive sheets with different grain size were fabricated through changing fabricating parameters, and the effects of grain size on the bendability were studied by bending test and optical microscopy. The results showed that the sheet with coarse grains exhibited poor bendability, and some micro-cracks were revealed at the surface of the bending samples. While the sheet with fine grains exhibited good bendability, and the bending samples showed smooth surface. Shear bands on the cross section of bending samples were observed. It was found that samples with coarse grains had more shear bands. These shear bands distributed in bundles, which facilitated the formation of continuous neckings and micro-cracks. However samples with fine grains had less shear bands, which distributed uniformly. The decrease of grain size could not only hinder the formation of shear bands, but also improve the homogeneity of its distribution during bending. On the other hand, refining grains could increase the amount of grain boundaries, which impede the propagation of shear bands. Hence the decrease of grain size could hinder the formation of continuous neckings and micro-cracks during bending, resulting in the significant improvement of the bendability.

"There is a widespread concern that certain of Finance Minister Michael Wilson's Tax Reform proposals will likely lead to a significant decline in flow through funding after 1988. This does not bode well for the junior exploration sector, which relies heavily on flow-through to finance exploration programs. The exploration industry is actively pursuing various solutions to the problems posed by Tax Reform, in order to ensure that flow-through has a future.IntroductionWhile the proposals contained in Finance Minister Michael Wilson's Tax Reform White Paper may not be as far-reaching as some people had expected, nevertheless the combination of the existing tax rules and proposed new rules offers sufficient complexity to keep pencils sharpened for many months. After having had an opportunity to study Tax Reform since June 18, 1987, the sharpened pencils are suggesting that the White Paper is not without its shortcomings and pitfalls. Insofar as the mineral exploration industry is affected, there is widespread concern that adoption of certain Tax Reform proposals could spell near disaster for mineral exploration in Canada. More specifically, there seems to be a consensus among the industry, as well as some federal and provincial government officials, that the announced phase-out of the ""mining exploration depletion allowance"" (MEDA) would reduce the appeal of flow-through shares to the point where only a fraction of exploration funding would be financed in the future by flow-through."
