"Hydraulic mining consists of coal erosion by powerful jet s of water from hydraulic monitors operated by remote control. The broken coal is crushed and mixed with water and then transported from the face to the surface using gravity whenever possible. This is a simple, safe and productive method. It will easily satisfy North American productivity standards if the structural features and coal properties are favourable for water jet cutting technology (Kaiser Resources Ltd. , hydraulic mine). General ConsiderationIn open-pit mines, placer mining (Fig. I) and hydroelectric construction projects, hydraulic earth moving techniques have been successfully applied. The stripping and transporting of the overburden has been accomplished by means of large monitor jets augmented by slurry pumps and pipes. An extension of this technique has led to the underground extraction of coal and ores. To date, the method has been most successfully used in undergrond coal mining, because the coal can be easily cut and flushed away by water jets, and the rocks of the roof strata can be left behind. Due to this favourable situation, the hydraulic mining definition only relates to the underground coal mines.At present, there are four basic types of hydraulic mining, which can be defined according to the coal breaking technique used in each case. The methods are briefly discussed below:(1) Coal excavation may be carried out by conventional techniques, but the mine is designed and equipped for the hydraulic transport of the mineral from the working place to surface. Under these circumstances, the coal breaking may not be influenced by the water jet, however it may be indirectly involved. For example, pre-loosening of the coal may be done by water infusion-hydraulic fracturing. Water may also be used to flush the broken coal, which has been excavated either by drilling and blasting or by mechanical cutting, into the transport flumes. In other cases, a mechanical loader may load the coal directly into the hydraulic transport system, without using any water for the extraction process. This hydraulic mining concept is primarily used for hard and impermeable coal, such as anthracite."

The methods employed for the addition of uranium to steels and cast iron in the Physical Metallurgy Division are outlined. It has been found that the segregation of? uranium is a major problem in aluminum and/or silicon killed steels and that the cooling rate is important in al-lowing the segregate to settle to one area, which can subsequently be discarded. The unsegregated areas were found to be extremely low in total oxygen, acid insoluble aluminum (AizOg) and, in some cases, slightly lower in nitrogen. Uranium recoveries, based on analyses of the unsegregated areas, were quite constant, at about 45 per cent, regardless of the type of uranium master alloy used for the addition. No segregation of carbon, manganese, silicon, sulphur, phosphorous, chromium or copper was observed in these steels. In commercial heats, the recoveries ranged from 7 to? 29 per cent for ladle additions to oxygen converted steel. When the steel was fully deoxidized prior to the uranium addition, recoveries ranged from 49 to 66 per cent, regardless of the steelmaking process.

Metallurgical vessel linings are multilayered, consisting of refractory bodies, insulation materials, joints, and additional space to control for thermal expansion. A unique biaxial hot testing press (BHTP) was installed at the RHI Refractories Technology Center Leoben, Austria to enable the three-dimensional behaviour of complex vessel lining segments to be investigated under simulated service conditions. Using the BHTP, the heat up and thermo-mechanical behaviour of magnesia chromite brick lining segments with and without mortar filled joints were examined. The results obtained during the initial heat up provided validation of CFD modelling of the lining system. In addition, after the heat up and under steady state conditions, the lining behaviour during deformation-controlled compression and relaxation was examined. These analyses generated important data regarding the stiffness, joint compressibility, and brick damage of the lining segments after cyclic loading and unloading as well as the benefits of using mortar joints in the lining. These investigations were performed in collaboration with the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Secondary Metallurgy of Nonferrous Metals, University of Leoben, Austria. The BHTP has been operational since November 2004 and is providing information regarding the thermo-mechanical behaviour of different lining segments.

"Operating heavy equipment in Labrador, where the winters are 8 months long and the temperature frequently drops below -40°F (-40°C) for days and sometimes weeks presents unique problems in both the operation and maintenance junctions. Winterization programs must be well designed and implemented at the proper time. These programs must include the proper selection of fuel oil, engine oil, hydraulic oils, greases, cooling system fluids, etc. More often than not, modifications have to be made to the original equipment in order that it can be operated safely and economically in the Canadian North. Manufacturers usually design equipment for a less harsh environment and the user makes adaptations by trial and error.Operators have to be trained for the proper operation on ice- and snow-covered roads in an open-pit mine. Special emphasis must be put on haulage road conditions. In this paper, the authors will cover some specific maintenance procedures, equipment modifications and operator training problems experienced by the Iron Ore Company of Canada in its open-pit operation in Labrador.IntroductionT he Iron Ore Company of Canada is engaged in open-pit mining , concentrating and pelletizing of iron ore. The company operates in two provinces, Quebec and Newfoundland (Fig . 1) . The Knob Lake operation "", based in Schefferville, Quebec, has mine sites located both in Labrador and Quebec . "IntroductionWith the steady rise of the cost of coal and freight, the time is now ripe for an investigation into the feasibility of using the heat pump for heating purposes in fairly remote industrial areas.The gold mines of northern Ontario seemed to be a most likely place for the application of the heat pump.It was decided that the first step in the investigation would be to determine what economic advantage was to be gained by using the heat pump and thereby determining whether a further and more detailed research programme was warranted.If we can use the heat pump with economic advantage, we can reduce our mining costs and make a worthwhile contribution to our national economy by reducing the import of U. S. coal.The investigation was conducted under the auspices of the Nipissing Fellowship and directed by Professor R. E. Barrett of the Department of Mining Engineering, University of Toronto.With the able guidance of Mr. C. S. Gibson, of the Mines Accident Prevention Association of Ontario, the author visited the following mines: Mcintyre-Porcupine, Delnite, Dome, Lake Shore, Wright-Hargreaves, Kirkland Lake, Macassa, and Kerr Adcliso11.In all cases, the management and technical personnel of these mines were most co-operative and helpful in supplying information and ideas.It should be emphasized at the outset that the design and operation of the heat pump itself is by no means complicated or even new. The reason we hear so much about it today is because there have been improvements in compressors, motors, and heat exchangers in the past few years, and because fuel and freight rates have risen to such a point that, in some cases, the heat pump now has an economic advantage over other methods of heating."

"The otherwise waste heat in many water streams in the mining industry can be used to provide space heating of adjacent infrastructure including laboratories, workshops, and offices. This can be achieved by using heat pump systems, which can work as a replacement or in conjunction with existing space heating. In the example investigated—process cooling streams at an ore smelter—the analysis provided illustrates that annual heating costs can be 19% lower and a simultaneous 62% reduction in CO2 emissions can be achieved.RÉSUMÉ Dans l’industrie minière, la chaleur qui serait normalement perdue des circuits d’eau pourrait servir à chauffer des structures adjacentes incluant les laboratoires, les ateliers et les bureaux. "Teck Resources Limited (“Teck”) has developed and extensively tested on a continuous basis the CESL Technology hydrometallurgical process for treating copper and nickel sulphide concentrates, including bulk copper-nickel concentrates. Copper, nickel and cobalt are leached efficiently into solution, utilizing CESL process conditions. Total precious metals including gold, silver, platinum and palladium are recovered from the residue stream via sulphur flotation. This paper describes the CESL Technology testwork on a bulk copper-nickel concentrate derived from Twin Metals Minnesota?s (TMM) deposits within the Duluth complex and evaluates the economic benefits (increased cash flow, increased revenue certainty) and investment criteria (capital cost, payback and cash flow) of incorporating CESL Technology into the staged development of TMM?s deposits.INTRODUCTION Mineral Processing and the Role of Hydromet in the Duluth Complex The Duluth Complex in northern Minnesota, United States (US), represents one of the largest undeveloped accumulations of copper, nickel, gold, and platinum group metals (PGMs) in the world, ranking second in copper and PMs and third in accumulation of nickel. The figure below identifies some of the larger known deposits within the Complex (see Figure 1). Copper, nickel, PM and PGM mineralization within the Duluth Complex is hosted by mafic to ultramafic intrusive rocks that are part of the overall intrusive complex.One of the mineral processing challenges of Cu-Ni-PM-PGM deposits in this Complex is the complicated, polymetallic nature of the mineralization1: copper occurs primarily as chalcopyrite and cubanite with minor occurrence of talnakhite; nickel occurs as pentlandite and refractory nickel oxide/silicates; iron sulphides are present as both pyrrhotite and troilite; and PMs/PGMs occur in both the sulphide matrix as well as discrete minerals. An additional challenge for the Duluth Complex is the ratio between copper and nickel; in most of the identified deposits, copper grade is three to four times greater than the nickel grade, which precludes the production of a simple bulk concentrate due to the lack of a traditional smelting market for a bulk concentrate of this character."

The recycling of steel mill dusts is getting more and more important. The costs and requirements of land filling are rising and companies are interested in new recycling strategies. The rising of sustaina¬bility hand in hand with the high rate of valuable metals in these residues supports new research activities on the recycling sector. Especially zinc but also iron and lead are economical factors due to the treatment of steel mill dusts. This paper gives a small overview of fundamental studies concerning the chemical and physical composition of these dusts. Furthermore aggregates for the reduction of these dusts in the liquid phase are introduced and compared. The Flash-Reactor, the TBRC-Technology (Top Blown Rotary Converter) and submerged arc furnaces and there use for melting and treatment of these dusts are in the center of interest of this paper. The final conclusion gives an overview of possibilities for reduction of filter dusts in the liquid phase.

"The subject of Grinding Media is perhaps still quite controversial. Many people will state today that the spherical ball is the only way, and also will state that this was settled long ago others are not so sure, and I am in this second category. Over the years there have been many changes in grinding and in our evaluation of grinding media we should always be ready to review the overall situation at regular intervals. There is quite a lot of inertia in all branches of Hineral Dressing and this is particularly true of grinding or, more correctly, comminution.In order to understand some of the things which are done today, and to understand some of the thinking on grinding, it is desirable to go back some sixty years and trace the developments in comminution. In doing this we should consider perhaps three general categories with respect to daily tonnage. An arbitrary division would be under 500 T.P.D., 500-5000 T.P.D., and large operations which might have several parallel units, each with a capacity of about 5000 T.P.D. For the future, in the broad picture, this last category will be the important one because we will be more and more dependent on large-tonnage low-grade operations for most of the metals of the future. Some such division is necessary because the daily tonnage will have a very great effect on what we can and cannot do. It is also necessary to consider the entire flowsheet, and to remember in particular that grinding is not merely to make small particles but is also a conditioning process, to prepare the materi.al for the process which follows. The relationship of crushing to grinding must also be considered. It is logical to include the liners as part of the grinding media and we should try to distinguish between the wear of grinding media and the consumption of media by corrosion. Finally, the whole question of grinding media should be examined in relation to the possibilities of using some form of autogenous grinding."

The challenge in measuring some key variables is certainly an important contributing factor to this situation. Reliable online measurement of varibles, such as the froth depth, bias, gas hold-up, frother concentration, bubble surface area flux, and bubble size distribution, provides opportunities for the application of various advanced control strategies and real-time optimization based on an economic criterion. For several years, Université Laval’sLaboratoire d’observation et d’optimisation des procédés researchers have been working on these opportunities. This paper describes the most recent advances and current research trends.

"Non-ferrous metal concentrates contain typically 7 – 12% water when received at the smelter. Removal of this water prior to smelting is always economically feasible because unnecessary heating of vapour (from 100 °C to 1200 °C) in the smelting furnace can thus be eliminated. This results in major reduction in CO2 emission and direct annual savings of several millions of dollars due to improved energy efficiency. Next step to further improve the energy efficiency, to gain substantial savings and simultaneously cut emissions is to select modern technology for the drying process. Consequently, all CO2 emission will be completely eliminated (from 40,000 tpy down to 0 tpy), NOx emission will be negligible, and the SO2 emission will be reduced by over 99 %. Switching of conventional direct heated drying technology to modern indirect steam drying brings, in addition to dramatic emission reduction, additional savings due to further improved energy efficiency. Direct energy savings count for 900 – 1300 MJ/t H2O, which depending on the concentrate feed rate and its moisture load can be worth several millions of dollars every year. Additional savings in operational expenses related to drying and gas cleaning may be worth a few million dollars more. Sustainability is a key issue today, and major savings together with significant emission reduction are readily available by proper technology selection for concentrate drying. INTRODUCTIONSustainability is a decisive principle in any process industry accompanied with emissions and high amount of energy. This is of significant importance in metal processing, including concentrate drying, where minimum impact on the environment, people and community are targeted, and all this with minimum cost, effort and resources. Therefore, special attention is paid to high energy efficiency, low energy consumption with preferable utilization of waste energy, safety issues, availability, level of maintenance, cost of maintenance, and emissions among other things.Non-ferrous metal concentrates can be dried using various techniques. Conventional drying based on direct heating, and use of fossil fuels for drying energy has almost entirely been replaced by steam drying. It is based on indirect heating and it has become the most dominant drying technology for copper concentrates during the last decade with over 90% of the market share of all new dryer installations. Among the steam dryers the Kumera Steam Dryer is the most pre-dominant technology with some 70% of all new dryer installations world-wide."

ABSTRACT The influence of using different extraction processes (caustic versus non-caustic) on thethixotropic strength of oil sands fine tailings is examined, as is the influence of adding a coagulant tocaustic fine tailings. The thixotropic strength of fine tailings at large void ratios manifests itself as a bonding or gel strength that has been widely noted both in the laboratory and in the field. This gel strength has a significant influence on preventing the initial consolidation or settlement of fine tailings. Differences between the fine tailings’ thixotropic strength development are explained based on their physical and chemical characteristics.

PART I.-GASES IN INDUSTRY INTRODUCTION THE part played by gases in industry can be considered from at least four distinct viewpoints, viz: (1) As air to support combustion and life and do various kinds of work (2) As fuel, or as essential to certain chemical processes (3) As sources of danger from explosion or fire ( 4) As hazards to man's health The present paper deals with gases only insofar as they are sources of danger, or are hazards to health. It may be noted, however, that, in point of tonnage, air is one of the most important materials handled in any industrial plant. In the operations of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, for example, 138,000 tons of air are handled daily, the only material exceeding this figure being water. The United States Bureau of Mines has listed no fewer than seventy-four gases and vapours that, under certain conditions, may be considered as ex-plosive or dangerous (poisonous). The paper outlines the need for high-volume ventilation in a uranium mining operation based on the design to meet environmental requirements for dust, radiation and diesel equipment. Mining methods in a highly mechanized operation, a key factor in design, are discussed. The construction and installation of major intake and exhaust fans are described briefly, together with the development of the mine airways and distribution system. Controls in the form of doors and bulkheads are important considerations in planning. Finally, the need to lower ventilation requirements in response to increasing power costs will result in future improvements.

Introduction The use of the aeroplane in prospecting is already familiar to everyone connected with the mining industry. Apart from transportation companies, three organizations, the N. A. M. E., the Dominion Explorers, and the Exploration Department of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, have made the aeroplane an everyday feature in every mining district in Canada. Its use has been demonstrated successfully in the mountains of British Columbia, but perhaps its greatest field lies in the Canadian Shield, where the numerous lakes and rivers afford an almost continuous series of landing places for aeroplanes, on floats in the summer and on skis in the winter. To the man who has travelled by canoe, toiling over fly-infested portages or held for days at a time, wind-bound, on the big lakes, the ease, speed, and cheapness of aeroplane travel have marked the beginning of a new era, in which ground previously covered with difficulty in a month or more is travelled with ease in a few hours. Development of an air service in the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company has proceeded on different lines from those of other organizations, and this paper is concerned with that development.

"A fast, reliable and accurate method for radium-226 determination in environmental water samples has been devised, using an alpha spectroscopic technique. The correlation between barium-133 and radium-226 in the barium-radium sulphate precipitation mechanism was studied and in the limited experimental recovery range, the coefficient of correlation was r = 0.986. A self-absorption study for various barium carrier concentrations was also undertaken to obtain the least broadening of alpha energy line widths. An optimum value of 0.3 mg barium carrier was obtained for chemical recovery in the range of 85%.IntroductionWith the increase in uranium mining activities, the migration and spread of radioactivity via various environmental pathways is of great concern. Because of its inherent biological hazard and relatively long half-life, (approximately 1620 years), raidum-226 is frequently monitored as a measure of radioactive contamination of the environment. It is, therefore, necessary to modify existing methods for rapid determination of radium-226 in environmental samples for quick corrective measures in the event of seepage, dam leakage or discharge violations."

"Abstract - The Louvicourt Au-Ag-Cu-Zn-Pb sulfide deposit is hosted by a Middle Ordovician calc-alkaline sequence of aphyric rhyolite flows and associated fragmental rocks at the top of the Flat Landing Brook Formation. The Zr/TiO2 (average = 0.110) and Y/TiO2 (average = 0.021) ratios in the footwall felsic volcanic rocks are consistent with known values for the Reids Brook member. The deposit consists of two concordant lenses of semi-massive to massive sulfides, approximately 150 m long and up to 9 m thick, which represent a fold repetition of a single exhalative horizon. The deposit contains a geologic resource of 136 000 tonnes grading 1.2% Pb, 1.0% Zn, 0.4% Cu, 90.9 g/t Ag, and 0.96 g/t Au; the deposit locally contains elevated Au (2.9 ppm) and Ag (320 ppm) contents. A laterally continuous iron formation that contains barite caps the deposit, and is gradational vertically and laterally into laminated siltstone. The exhalite confirms the stratiform nature of this deposit, but a large percentage of sulfides occur as late replacements of altered felsic fragmental rocks in the footwall. Abundant examples of colloform pyrite and perlitic and spherulitic textures in volcanic clasts are well preserved. The base- and precious-metal content of the Louvicourt deposit is atypical of the Bathurst Mining Camp (BMC). Reported assay data (n = 27) indicate an average Pb/Zn ratio of 2.6, the highest in the BMC (average = 0.39). Lead exhibits a strong Spearman Rank correlation (r' = 0.92) with base metals throughout the sequence, indicating a preponderance of galena in both the stockwork and stratiform zones. The Ag and Au contents in this deposit are among the highest in the BMC and exhibit a Au-Ag- Cu-Pb association. Barite-rich exhalative pyrite exhibits a moderate Au correlation with Ag (r' = 0.77; n = 10) and Cu (r' = 0.76) and occurs in portions of the exhalative sulfides that are enriched in Pb. Chemical exhalative rocks are conformably overlain by trachy-andesitic volcaniclastic (possibly pyroclastic) rocks that are assigned to the Little River Formation. These are enriched in Nb (average = 38.4 ppm) and P2O5 (average = 0.17 wt.%), and have much lower Zr/TiO2 (average = 0.056) and Y/TiO2 (average = 0.0062) relative to rocks higher in the hanging wall. The intermediate volcanic rocks are conformably overlain by massive to pillowed basalt flows and related hyaloclastite that have Nb/Y = 0.60 and high TiO2 contents (average = 2.8 wt.%). This chemistry is consistent with rocks of the Brunswick Mines member (Little River Formation), except that these rocks are considerably enriched in P2O5 (average = 0.82 wt.%). This syngenetic exhalative deposit is unique for the BMC with a high Pb/Zn and elevated Au and Ag contents, as well as an epithermal signature (Sb-Ag-Au-Tl-Hg), analogous to high sulfidation volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. Its intimate relationship with an emergent felsic dome (Flat Landing Brook Formation), chlorite-silicate-oxide-sulfide exhalite (locally hematitic), and the abundance of barite are classical features of many of the Kuroko deposits."
