Based on risk analysis, they provide a valuable and needed framework for the reduction of losses related to people, equipment and production.

Natroalunite is one of colouring minerals in kaolin. In this investigation, natroalunite, on which Ca(II) was adsorbed, was flocculated by HPAM and kaolin was depressed in suspension. The adsorption of Ca(II) on the natroalunite surface was studied by zeta-potential measurement and Auger Electron Spectroscopy analysis. Ca(II) was adsorbed more on the natroalunite surface than on the kaolin surface. The mechanism of Ca(II) adsorption was considered to be chemical adsorption on natroalunite and to be physical adsorption on kaolin. It has been found that Na6P6O18 and Na2Si04 can strongly affect Ca(II) adsorption on the surface of kaolin, but weakly on the surface of natroalunite. The effects of degree of hydrolysis and the molecular weight of HPAM, the effect of pH and the effect of Ca(II) have been studied. The kaolin ore, containing SO3 1.05 per cent has been processed with this method. The products only containing S03 0.36 per cent and the weight ratio of concentrate 52.27 per cent were Obtained.

When the mining and milling of 1100 Copper Orebody commenced, difficulties were experienced in producing a satisfactory grade of copper concentrate. The major concentrate contaminants were fine pyrite and silica, particularly in the minus 10 microns fraction. Studies of the 1100 Orebody showed that much of the fine grained pyrite and a proportion of the silica present in the ore contained carbonaceous matter in the form of complete or partial rims and as internal carbon films disseminated throughout grains. The hydrophobic surface property of the carbonaceous material resulted in an inherently flotable fine pyrite and silica fraction. The addition of a 60:40 mixture of nigrosine and dextrine, initially to a prefloat concentrate of the inherently flotable carbonaceous material and finally to'the total copper flotation feed, successfully controlled the flotation rates of the carbonaceous pyrite and silica. The objective of a 25 per cent Cu concentrate grade was then achieved without decreasing copper recovery.

Two ends of a longwall face are not only concentrated locations of equipment, but also provide ventilation and access. The roof strata stability here has an important influence on mining coal and safety. Based on field obser- vations in the gateways at Zaozhuang Colliery (Shandong Province) and model tests, the author developed a structural model of the overlying strata at the ends of the longwall face - the arc triangular cantilever plate - to which the elastic theory of plates can be applied. Factors influencing the stability of the cantilever plate and its breaking character- istics are discussed. Requirements and design parameters for supports at face ends are pro- posed, based on these factors.

The thick coal seams of the South Maitland field are the only ones in New South Wales which have been worked extensively to heights beyond 3.8 m (nominal "thin" seam height). Under shallow cover only minor difficulties were experienced in developing first workings but later the widespread occurrence of incidents of spontaneous combustion and the growth of "creeps" extending over large areas gave the field its own peculiar problems. As the mines have driven under deeper cover extreme difficulties in forming development roadways have been experi- enced. Various methods have been adopted in an attempt to overcome the problems of the field.

Orebodies in the Mt. Charlotte - Hannans North Area N. & B. of the town of Kalgoorlie provide a marked'dontrast to the pyrite - telluride lodes of the Golden Mile, although both groups of orebodies appear to be fundamentally related. These highly siliceous telluride free orebodies N. of the Golden Mile are closely related to strong oblique faulting. The Golden Mile. lodes, while possessing an apparent over-all relationship to the oblique faults also have a close relationship to E.-dipping strike faults.

Dust emissions by blasting are of concern to both mine operators and surrounding communities. The quantity of dust produced, and the effects of its dispersal depend substantially on geological, blasting and meteorological conditions. This paper provides details of methods used to quantify the amount of dust produced after collecting samples using high volume dust samplers, and the difficulties encountered in satisfactory dust sampling and quantification. Also described are practical dust reduction methods by using water filled ampoules and water filled balls.

The bubble size was measured in a laboratory flotation column. The effect of variables such as air flowrate, frother dosage and type, pulp density, particle size and water column height on the bubble size was investigated. The results show that an increase in either air flowrate or pulp density cause the bubble size to increase, while increases in water column height, frother dosage, surface tension or solid particle size cause the bubble size to reduce. Among the frother types tested, MIBC was found to be the most effective in reducing the bubble size.

Wheal Gawler was Australia's first metal mine. This leader was followed by an army of other metalliferous underground mines and surface operations in Australia. As a mine it was not highly significant economically because its small total production of nearly pure galena had low multiplier effects on the economy of South Aus- tralia. Its importance lay in its symbolism: here was a silver-lead mine close to the new town of Adelaide posing the question of what other min- erals lay in the Mount Lofty ranges and in the fields beyond.

The Hodgkinson and Broken River Provinces form the northern part of the Tasman Orogen. They are separated by a broad belt of Late Palaeozoic igneous rocks, but were probably originally continuous. They are bounded to the west by a system of major faults (Fig. 1) which separate them from the Georgetown Province. Although largely Precambrian, the Georgetown Province includes probable Siluro- Devonian granitoids, and in the south adjacent to the Broken River Province, metamorphosed Early Palaeozoic(?) volcanics and sediments of the Greenvale Subprovince. South of the Broken River Province, the Lolworth-Ravenswood Province includes probable Precambrian rocks, Cambro-Ordovician volcanics and sediments, and voluminous Ordovician to Early Devonian granitoids. The first systematic studies of the provinces were the 1:250 000 scale mapping programs by the Bureau of Mineral Resources and Geological Survey of Queensland (White, 1965; de Keyser and Lucas, 1968). These and subsequent regional studies were reviewed by Arnold and Fawckner (1980). Remapping by the Geological Survey of Queensland since 1982, and a concurrent regional study of the deformation by Hammond (1986) have provided much new data. New knowledge has no economic value unless it can be applied, or æcapturedÆ, as the R&D jargon has it. Australia probably spends more than $500 m per year on mineral industry R&D, distributed amongst the mining companies (IR&D Board, 1997), CSIRO, the universities and others. The investors in this research (industry, and the community via government) will expect some sort of return from their investment. The return will be poor unless the know-how developed in R&D programs can be exploited. This paper explores some of the issues involved in capturing the outcomes of mineral industry R&D in a form which can be exploited for economic benefit, and suggests ways in which it might be done better. It is based on the experience of the JKMRC in conducting applied research in mining and mineral processing and delivering it to the industry. It may seem presumptuous for a research contractor to be telling its clients how to do their job. However, the process of developing, acquiring and implementing R&D outcomes has to be a partnership between provider and receiver, in order for this process to work efficiently. This applies whether the two parties operate within a single corporation (a corporate laboratory and a business unit, for example) or are two entirely independent organisations (eg a mining company and a university). Both partners have a role to play, and the best examples of realising the benefits of R&D almost always involve the open-hearted and skilful handling of this synergy.

In recent decades the awareness of environmental issues by the general public has developed at an accelerat- ing rate. This is the result of a number of factors including more scientific knowledge of environments and of the impacts of modern society upon them, higher levels of education, the opportunity for people to travel more, and the success of the various communication media in bringing in- formation to the communities of the world about such environmental crises or threats as the smogs of Los Angeles and London, the Torrey Canyon and Santa Barbara oilspills, Minamata disease in Japan, the spread of the Crown of Thorns starfish, the disposal of toxic industrial wastes into the Upper Rhine, the discovery of high mercury and zinc contents in marine foods in southern Australian waters, and the proposal to mine limestone at Precipitous Bluff in Tasmania.

The effects of pH, temperature and the form of zinc used on the kinetics of cementation of cadmium from process liquors were investigated. Batch tests were conducted in stirred beakers, and the cementation reaction was found to be first order controlled. The rate controlling step was thought to be the diffusion of zinc ions from the zinc surface to the bulk solution. The pH was found to have a significant effect when using Prime Western zinc or zinc dust. High reaction rates were favoured at low pH levels and a minimum rate was observed at a pH level of approximately 5 to 5.5. The pH was found to have little effect when using high grade and cathode zinc. The reaction rates increased significantly with increasing temperature; a reaction temperature of 55¦C resulted in almost complete removal of zinc from solution. Effective cementation rates were only acheived with cathode zinc after pickling in acid. The nature and specification of zinc used determined the cementation rate of cadmium, resulting in the following order: 1. Zinc dust 2. Prime Western zinc at pH 3 3. High Grade zinc at pH 3 4. Pickled cathode zinc 5. Prime Western zinc at pH 3 6. High Grade zinc at pH 3 7. Cathode zinc "as received".

Much of the research regarding the use of bacteria for the oxidation of sulfide minerals has been conducted using pure bacterial strains or synthetic minerals, often under ideal conditions, which does not reflect the conditions commonly encountered in commercially operating plants. This has also led to much conjecture as to the exact mechanism by which bacteria are able to enhance sulfide oxidation and as to which species of bacterial microflora are the most dominant. Recent advances in 16S rNA sequencing has confirmed that many of the bacterial species once thought to dominate commercial oxidation circuits were simply more willing to grow under the culturing conditions used and may only play a minor role in the oxidation process (Rawlings, 2002). Consequently this research will look at bacterial oxidation under conditions more reflective of commercial operations, focusing on the presence of organic carbonaceous material within a refractory sulfide orebody to be sourced from the Fosterville deposit of Perseverance Corporation Limited.
