For decades strip mining with discon tinuously operating 'draglines and shovels has been the most economical operation method in the shallow hard coal opencast mines of Aust- ralia, North-America and some other countries. Continuously operating equipment such as bucket chain excavators and bucket wheel excavators in combination with conveyor belt systems, conveyor bridges and stackers had been deve- loped in Germany; during the last 25 years this type of equipment has been further developed in order to allow a high degree of rationaliza= tion as to opencast mines in unconsolidated overburden in Germany, in many European couh- tries, in India and in Victoria. The differing compactness of the layers to be mined, the increasing mining depth, the adverse over- burden to coal ratio and geotechnical con- ditions account for the combined use of con- tinuously and discontinuously operating equip- ment and systems. This paper is to demonstrate some projects showing the combination of continuously and discontinuously operating equipment which aims at optimizing opencast mine operations. Zeolites are potential carriers of slow release fertilisers due to their unique phenomenon for salt occlusion. A comparative study was performed on the capacities of potassium nitrate (KNO3) occlusion in molten KNO3 treated synthetic 4A and 13X zeolite molecular sieves with main channel sizes of 0.41 x 0.41 nm and 0.74 x 0.74 nm respectively. The results show that in a laboratory setting, the treated zeolite 4A contained 13.57 per cent of occluded KNO3 and the treated zeolite 13X did not contain any. This was confirmed by the regular release of K+ and NO3- during washing both treated mixed samples with water and by their IR spectra and TG analysis. There are also changes of the relative intensities of peaks in X-ray diffractograms of both treated zeolite samples. K+ release from molten-KNO3 treated zeolites in deionised water and simulated soil solution shows that release of K+ from KNO3 occluded in zeolite 4A are slow and steady. Proper size fit between the channel size of zeolites pore and the size of K+-NO3- ion pair of KNO3 is the decisive factor for zeolites to occlude KNO3.

The P49 Shaft, Hilton Mine, was sunk and equipped for Mount Ise Mines Limited by con- tractors Cementation - Thiess Joint Venture. The leached siltstones to a depth of 150m were known to contain large volumes of water. These siltstones were cored and tested in the laboratory. Field results confirmed that cement grouting was relatively ineffective but that chemical grouting was effective. The Sm diameter shaft was sunk to a depth of 1040m. Weak strata to the full depth re- quired continuous temporary support by rock bolts and mesh before the concrete lining was poured, and made sinking conditions difficult. After completion of the shaft sinking the headframe was redesigned and modified to allow shaft equipping as a combined service and hoisting shaft with seven compartments. The shaft steelwork was designed and fab- ricated for service with high speed conveyances operating under corrosive conditions. The steelwork, weighing approximately 1500 tonnes, was installed to a high degree of accuracy which required guides not to depart from true verticality by more than 2mm over any 5m, or 15mm over the full shaft depth.

Dissolved oxygen has been measured directly using a rugged, reliable, accurate electrochemical probe system developed for steelworks application by B.H.P. Central Research Laboratories. Furnace measurements show that the steel is generally supersaturated with oxygen and that oxygen contents vary considerably from heat. to heat. Ladle measurements also show considerable heat-to-heat variations. Analysis in terms of ladle deoxidation chemistry differentiates between carbon monoxide controlled and manganese silicate controlled oxygen levels. Deviations from these levels are sometimes due to aluminium present in other added ladle alloys but in some cases the plant applicability of laboratory derived equilibria is questionable.

The crushing and concentration of ores, as Herbert Hoover commented in a footnote in De Re Metallica, stretches back at least 6000 years. During those years there have been continuing changes and improvements in mineral processing technology. It has expanded greatly in its ability to handle different types of minerals, and lower grade and more complex ores. Australia will be dependent on the mineral industry for the fore- seeable future and there will be continuing demands on the mill opera- tors to improve the technology with regard to efficiency, flexibility and costs. These demands will be met successfully in the future as they have been in the past. This Mill Operators' Conference is an important forum for assessing our present position and planning for the future.

Minera Alumbrera Limited operates the Alumbrera concentrator, treating a nominal 80 000 tpd of porphyry gold/copper ore. It is located in Argentina, 1200 km north-west of Buenos Aires in Catamarca Province, at an elevation of 2550 m above sea level. Treatment facilities consist of crushing, SAG and primary ball mill grinding circuits, rougher flotation, ball mill regrinding, gravity recovery and cleaner flotation. It is one of only a small number of concentrators in the world, which uses Jameson Cells alone for cleaner circuit flotation. Plant design was started in June 1995, with commissioning commencing in July 1997. Following a successful ramping up to design tonnages and recoveries, a number of options were reviewed to improve gold and copper recoveries. This paper concentrates on a detailed size by size flotation recovery project, commenced in May 1999. Utilising optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and analysis of surface chemistry it has allowed losses by size fraction to be quantified and options for enhanced recoveries to be developed. Coupled with extensive circuit surveys it has also provided an insight into previously unknown properties of Jameson Cell operation. Among these are unique residence time and bubble formation reactions to reagent and pulp flow variations, which has permitted a number of novel changes to the operation to maximise capacity and recovery.

It is possible to use compacted anodes formed at low pressure for the direct electrowinning of lead from sulphide concentrates. An anode containing 5.5 per cent graphite, formed into a compact at 34 MN m-2, enables lead to be won at a current efficiency of about 80 per cent; the power consumption .at 150 A m-2 current density being 0.4 kWh per kg lead. It would be necessary to use diaphragm cells to obtain a sufficiently pure product. A conceptual design for a full-scale plant is presented, together with a cost estimate for the production of lead by a process based on direct electrolysis of compacted concentrates. It is unlikely that the proposed process will be economically competitive with the conventional lead smelting.

In this paper the reactions which may lead to particle hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity as a function of grinding environment-are reviewed. The results of pulp chemical investigations related to a Cu-Pb-Zn ore on a pilot plant scale and laboratory tests with a Pb-Zn ore to evaluate the effect of some inhibitors on grinding/flotation are presented. The flotation recoveries of the ores treated by conventional and autogenous grinding methods show only a marginal difference and the results favour autogenous grinding. Iron originating from several sources manifests in the form of insoluble hydroxy complexes in the pulps. Such metal hydroxy complexes are hydrophilic and coat the mineral surfaces indiscriminately. On the other hand, selectivity is a problem for pulps ground by autogenous milling. Some corrosion inhibitors used in the laboratory grinding/flotation tests on a Pb-Zn ore showed maximum reduction in the wear of the grinding media ranging from 25 - 36 per cent, depending on the type and concentration of the inhibitor.

Japan Construction Method and Machinery Research Institute has been conducting various field surveys of tunnel works and other excavation works, and the cost and efficiency of these two excavation methods have been studied. Based on these data, the costs of blasting excavation and mechanical excavation represented by roadheaders were calculated. The costs were calculated and compared for rocks of various hardness. When the total construction cost is considered, the degree of overbreak becomes one of the most influencial factors, because the overbreak area must be filled up with expensive shotcrete in NATM. So, in the next step, the relation between the excavation costs considering overbreak and the rock hardness was studied using the data on overbreak obtained by the field survey.

The successful operation of a longwall face depends significantly on the efficient actions by support systems and on the ability to form a supported beam for a limited time span.The mechanical action of the supports can set up complex stresses in the immediate roofstrata.The cyclic application of supporting loads to the immediate roofstrata of a longwall face creates a special type of fabric disintegration in the rocks -affected. The mode of application and the distribution of the supporting forces is thus severely modified in a number of cases.The occurrence of true fatigue damage in brittle sandstones has been identified by studying the subcritical crack growth and microcrack development in the fracture-tip region. Several mechanical effects peculiar to the cyclic fatigue process have been identified. These effects had not previously been widely recognized. Damage in brittle rocks subjected to cyclic loads is shown to be distinctly different from any other damage processes under either monotonic or sustained (creep) loading conditions. The face support systems will frequently support rockmasses with mechanical properties not identified in conventional monotonic or sustained load tests.

In large companies with mining operations spread over multiple sites, it is essential that consistency between sites is maintained in preparing and classifying resource and reserve estimates. The endorsement by The AusLMM and AMIC of the "Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves" and the subsequent incorporation of reference to the code into the ASX listing rules for mining companies has provided a basis for the consistent classification of resources and reserves. However, compliance with other criteria more or less stringent than the Australasian Code can present some reporting difficulties. Examples include listing requirements for foreign stock exchanges, particular Acts of Parliament that may apply to individual leases, constraints imposed by individual companies on their own leases, and ultimately, reserves for short, medium and long term planning. Confusion can arise when any two or more sets of reserves for the same lease are compared.. To alleviate this confusion, a standardised procedure was developed for the calculation and classification of coal resources and reserves. The procedure which is geostatistically based incorporates a technique called "Irregular Block Kriging" where specific mining blocks are directly kriged. The procedure has enabled those engineers and geologists with only a basic understanding of geostatistics to apply the technique and not feel hampered by some of the complex mathematics which in the past has tended to inhibit and overcomplicate the use of geostatistics. The procedure has resulted in "cleaner" data bases and hence more reliable reserve estimates.

THOSE who have had occ.asion to sample a mine not infrequently find that it is impossible to take their sample cuts at regular distances apart, owing to the ground being close timbered, a stope having been taken out, or some other cause. When such is the case a tedious calculation becomes necessary in order to obtain an accurate result. A conscientious man will make the tedious calculation, but one who is inclined to be lazy, or who does not recognize the importance of accuracy, or has not the time, may be satisfied with either the arithmetical or weighted arithmetical mean result.There are two main systems of taking samples when the cuts are taken-(l) at equal distances, (2) at unequal distances. When the samples are out at equal distances apart there are three methods of computing the assay value :-1 (a) By Arithmetical Mean. The sum of the values and sum of the widths are each divided by the total number of samples, in order to obtain the value and width respectively, no allowance being made for the relative widths arid values. The result isabsolutely inaccurate, and should never be used under any circumstances.1 (b) By Geometrical Mean. The assay widths ie, feet %, feet oz, inch dwt, &c, are added together and the sum of these is divided by the sum of the widths.

Experimental data on the production of fines as a function of specific grinding energy consumption show that in general the energy utilisation in a choke fed high-pressure roll mill is higher than in a ball mill, but lower than in the single-particle mode of comminution under slow compressive loading. There is some evidence to suggest that the presence of water in feeds improves the energy efficiency of pressurised roll milling somewhat. Within a wide range of energy input, the size distributions of the ground product are self-similar, the logarithmic median size decreases linearly with the amount of fines produced and the inverse of the median size increases linearly with the energy spent. The production of fines as a function of energy expended follows essentially the same pattern as the one frequently encountered in media mills. The kinetics of grinding in the high-pressure roll mill can be simulated satisfactorily by modifying the standard particle population balance equation in order to account for energy dissipation in the tightly compressed bed. Common characteristics and important differences in grinding by the media mill and the high-pressure roll mill are highlighted.

A laboratory-scale fluidised-bed roaster has been used to examine the effect of temperature and duration of roast on the morphology of the calcine produced from a pyritic gold-bearing concentrate. Two mechanisms of oxidation, which depend on the roasting temperature, have been identified. For samples roasted below 550°C, direct oxidation of the sulphide occurred to form hematite with a porous fine-grained concentrically-layered texture. The surface area of the calcine increased with an increase in roasting temperature in the range 400 to 500°C. For samples roasted above 550°C, the first reaction was the evolution of sulphur vapour to produce pyrrhotite, which underwent increasing grain growth as the roasting temperature was increased. This had the effect of decreasing the surface area of the calcine. The pyrrhotite was subsequently oxidised to produce hematite.Leaching studies using cyanide solution indicated that gold extraction around 95 per cent was achieved at temperatures of 500°C and above, with optimum extraction, taking into account rate and cyanide consumption in the range 550 - 700°C. Hence recovery did not decrease with decrease in surface area of the calcine. Observed gold in leached calcines was mainly enclosed in thin oxide walls of the hematite, with minor quantities enclosed in quartz and silicate minerals.

Stringent environmental benchmarks imposed by governments and successful legal challenges in the country of origin have changed the risk profile for all mining companies over recent years. In developing countries, however, where high government standards may not always be in place, direct community action has often made worthless substantial investments in otherwise viable mining operations. Real limitations are therefore imposed from these risks on all areas of mining activity, wherever they may be. Thus, the bar has been raised for all companies developing or operating mines. This paper argues real financial and global industry reputation benefits accrue when all known environmental risks, where practical, are managed. In response, among major international mining companies, as the industry moves towards greater global consolidation, senior management teams have increasingly adopted corporate governance standards including æTriple Bottom LineÆ (shareholder/government/community) sustainability reporting. Sustainability reporting is encouraged by improved international stockholder and financial investor perceptions by contributing to lowered social, community and geopolitical risk which lowers the cost of access to funds as well as improving staff morale and productivity. New mines must not only be primarily financially viable but must operate throughout in a sustainable way. Case studies of some recent mining operations, who have not foreseen or proactively managed major environmental risks, demonstrate the dire financial and personal implications for managers, directors and shareholders from not identifying and managing these environmental risks. Merely having a corporate policy statement on environmental standards or high level Government approvals process for a mining activity does not preclude mining operations from the risk of direct action by local populations or future adverse legal implications from risks which were perhaps identified but not mitigated effectively. Methods and processes for the identification and active management of environmental risks in the global arena are discussed to add a practical element to sustainability, based on the authors recent strategy development processes with governments and major mining houses such as BHPBillition, Rio and Xstrata. Emphasis is placed on proactive, innovative yet practical solutions which, where possible, show positive contributions firstly to the financial bottom line but also the community at large.

THE manufacture of Portland cement on a commercial basis dates back to the year 1824, when Joseph Aspidin, of Leeds, patented his process. It was, however, only within the past 25 years that the cement of to-day commenced its history, and during that period manufacturers have constantly tried to improve the grade of cement.The introduction of the rotary kiln at the opening of this century was the starting point of rapid development in the process of manufacture, and in the quality of the cement produced.Following on the rotary innovation came the wet process. This at first was used only where the raw materials were of a soft nature; but to-day nearly all classes of materials can be treated by this method. Oompared with the dry process, it allows for greater refinement of raw materials, more intimate mixing, better chemical combination, and economy in fuel. Taking advantage of this, the manufacturers in England and America are in a number of cases substituting the wet for the dry process.Subsidiary machinery throughout the factories, such as crushing and grinding mills, have also been vastly improved. The chemists, too, have done their share in the work. Long and careful research has proved the necessity for accurate proportioning of raw materials, thorough mixing, and very careful burning. All these factors combined have given us the product of to-day, which is consistent within very narrow limits, and far superior to that of the beginning of this cement era.

Average annual growth in consumption of primary energy in Australia over the past ten years has been 5.5% compared to a world average of 4.1%. Over the next ten years growth rate is expected to increase to 6% per annum due largely to the rapid development in the mineral processing industry. By the end of the 1970's natural gas is expected to supply more than 9% of Australia's, primary energy market. Coal will supply 40% and petroleum products 47%. Nuclear energy will make its appearance but-will only make a small contribution in the period. Australia has adequate reserves of natural gas and coal to supply its needs in the 1970's and beyond. However the newly developed reserves of crude, while supplying 60-70% of requirements-in the initial years; will need regular and sizable additions if they are to .keep pace with the expanding consumption. For Australia to become self sufficient in the period 1970-1990 it is estimated *that new discoveries-will need to approximate. ten times the volume of recoverable reserves found in Australia to date. .

In the climate planning of mines and tunnelling with anticipated poor climatic conditions, and especially in case of longer working shifts, the main question is whether it can be reliably prevented that certain climatic limits laid down be exceeded. Working at high temperature and/or humidity can lead to reduced human working energy û a very important economic aspect û and to a risky lack of concentration on the part of the miners or to heat collapse and extremely dangerous heat stroke. With the Deutsche Montan Technologie GmbH (DMT) climate prediction programs, both the dry and the extremely significant humid heat transfer can be calculated. This is due to the high planning reliability involved. With the help of these climate prediction programs it is already possible to determine the anticipated climatic values for the operation phase as early as the planning stage of new ore or coal fields or of tunnel construction projects and to design the optimum air cooling system for every underground project with due regard to technical and economic aspects.

In submitting the accompanying sketch and description, the writer mentions that he has found this "gadget" a useful assay office adjunct.He believes that some millmen and assayers have been confronted, from time to time, with large samples of mill pulp for assay purposes and that although the commonly used method of coning and quartering dry sample is simple and effective, provided the samples are of reasonable proportion, the operator is frequently confronted with samples of pulp, sometimes up to 50 gallons. The writer stresses the advantage of being able to handle these samples. This fact inspired the design of the "gadget,"which was developed at the Kalgoorlie State Battery and has been found to give very reliable results. It has considerably eased the work of the assay office.Description. - A cone of suitable dimensions according to requirements (this one is about six gallons' capacity) is mounted on a light angle-iron frame and has a small hand-operated agitator paddle let into it far mixing purposes. The agitator and head frame are removable to facilitate cleaning. Four outlet pipes at the bottom at right angles to each other are controlled with one common plug, externally operated for discharging the pulp.Each operation of the machine delivers four equal parts; one or more of these can be used for further division as conditions require. Samples can thus be reduced to suitable assay room size in a few minutes.The dotted lines, enclosing the shaded portion, represent the four-bladed paddle.Each paddle is slotted with three parallel slots. Mill operators have traditionally been forced to rely on grade-recovery curves and overall flotation rate constants when analysing proposed improvements to plants. This has led to loss in money and time when a proposed change that showed potential in laboratory scale tests failed to show improvement in the plant. Frequently, this is a result of the operators being unable to gain insight into how and why the proposed change affected the flotation performance. This is due to the classical models not including any description of the subprocesses of flotation and their individual contribution to the overall flotation performance. A new flotation model has been developed as part of the AMIRA P9 project that separates the flotation process into subprocesses and includes the contribution of both the pulp phase and froth phase to the overall flotation recovery. It is not possible to determine the individual components of this new model on traditional pilot plants as they lack the required flexibility and scale. Therefore a new pilot plant has been developed known as the Floatability Characterisation Test Rig (FCTR) that has the flexibility and features required for the determination of the flotation subprocesses. The flexibility and features of the FCTR also make it an ideal tool for investigations into many different aspects of flotation research. These include the effect of reagents, grinding, and power on the flotation performance. This paper will describe the methodology for using the FCTR in these fields of research and highlights the advantages of using the FCTR over traditional methods.
