With the rapid development of the Chinese steel industry, the strong demand for iron ores has led to huge imports of various iron ores from all over the world. As a relatively new force in the iron ore world and an important raw material supplier, Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) has achieved an annualised production rate of 100 Mt of iron ore fines. Typical blends were designed to simulate sinter blends employed in Chinese steel mills, and to determine sintering properties and metallurgical performance of blends comprising FMG Rocket fines in pilot sinter pot. It is shown that the sinter of typical blends comprising 15 - 20 per cent rocket fines possesses excellent sintering properties and metallurgical performance. With Rocket fines substitution for competitor ores in a typical customer mill blend comprising fully imported fines, the sinter productivity and tumble index increased from 1.45 t/m2h and 62.0 per cent to 1.54 t/m2h and 64.0 per cent, respectively, while attaining similar reducibility index and reduction degradation index at lower solid fuel consumption.CITATION:Zhu, D, Guo, Z, Ooi, T C, Chun, T, Pan, J and Young, J M, 2013. In the majority of recently commissioned gold mines granular activated carbon is used to adsorb gold from alkaline cyanide pulps or solutions. At the same time the carbon also adsorbs many other inorganic and organic species, most of which lower the activity of the carbon. Removal of these foulants is necessary before the carbon is reactivated and recycled. Standard practice for re- storing carbon activity involves high temperature treatment in a kiln - an apparently straightforward unit operation which is not always satisfactorily carried out. This paper presents the results of some fundamental work carried out on the thermal reactivation of carbon in a laboratory rotating pot kiln. The effects of temperature and steam addition on carbon activity were examined and compared with the activity of carbons obtained from a number of commercial kilns. Carbon was also reactivated using a small-scale Rintoul Furnace in which carbon was resistively heated by the direct passage of an alternating electric current. It was established that both elevated temperatures and the addition of steam to hot carbon generally enhanced its activity although peat-based extruded carbons responded a little differently to coconut shell types. Other measurements made included the weight loss and the hardness of carbons as a function of reactivation conditions.

A summary of the more important work by previous workers is followed by brief descriptions of the rock formations and regional structure. Australian coal mines have spent considerable capital on dragline improvements over the last two years. This has included ~$30 M on UDD conversions, >$20 M on new buckets, boom upgrades, electrical upgrades, etc. This is a natural part of the response of mining companies to technology and replacement programs. Capital expenditure is a normal part of the ongoing success of most companies. There is however, a tendency for some people to rely on the capital alone to provide the ongoing improvements in equipment productivity. Implementing new technology through capital expenditure is only part of the equation in continuous improvement. For 80 - 90 per cent of the year, the operator controls the productivity achieved by the dragline. Variation between operators is huge. The average standard deviation in productivity is 12 per cent and maintenance impact is over 40 per cent. Robbins 2003, states: Contrary to what we were taught in grade school, we werenÆt all created equal. Most of us are to the left of the median on some normally distributed ability curve. Further, he states: The issue is knowing how people differ in abilities and using that knowledge to increase the likelihood that an employee will perform his or her job well. There are two options for reducing variability between operators; improving operator ability and getting the machine to take over what the operator is doing (automation). Dragline automation will be discussed, however, this paper will focus more on the æhuman factorÆ and how to establish a dragline with minimum variability between operators.

A key concern both in public perceptions of the environmental performance of the mining industry and in the development of policy relating to mining activities is the state in which the areas may be left at the completion of mining operations. There is, in effect, concern that the transient economic benefits of mining are enjoyed by the few, while the 'scars' may remain for all. While the techniques of mine rehabilitation have improved rapidly in recent years, an important set of economic issues has generally been neglected.In this paper, the economic and policy aspects of mine rehabilitation are examined. The key issue addressed is how to determine when expenditure on rehabilitation should stop. The answer to such a question requires consideration of the full range of social, as well as private, costs and benefits of rehabilitation at a particular site. Clearly these costs and benefits will vary between sites. From both an economic and policy perspective it is important to establish whether the additional gain from more rehabilitation would exceed the additional cost.It is concluded in the paper that the technical feasibility alone does not justify a paeticular level of rehabilitation activity and expenditure. While more rehabilitation at a particular site may be technically feasible, the additional expenditure incurred in undertaking that rehabilitation may result in little extra benefit. This conclusion has important implications for government policy, particularly with respect to establishing the goals for rehabilitation, criteria for successful rehabilitation and enforcement of rehabilitation objectives.

In their description of the post-mine leaching of galena and marmatite at Broken Hill, Messrs. Garretty and Blanchard1 find themselves unable to account satisfactorily for the fact that the more usual order of solubility of these two minerals is here reversed, and that the galena is leached more rapidly than the marmatite. An explanation of this somewhat unusual phenomena is perhaps provided by the recent work of Garrels.2 Garrels showed that the presence of Cl' ions in Pb-Zn solutions, in concentrations in excess of 0·1 N, rendered the zinc less soluble than the lead. It seems possible that Cl' ions may be present in the underground waters of the North Broken Hill Mine in sufficient concentration to cause such reversal in the relative solubility of the lead and zinc sulphides.Thus the analysis of "water believed to be free from contamination by mine drainage" given by Messrs. Garretty and Blanchard (p. 158 of their paper) is as follows:Total solids in solution 878 grains per gallon...164 grams of Cl per gallon is equivalent to 2· 3394 grams of Cl' per litre, which is equivalent to 0066 N.This concentration is approaching a value sufficient to cause a reversal of the relative solubility of zinc and lead salts; and it seems probable that there will be parts of the ore-body where locally the Cl' concentration will greatly exceed this figure. At such points the lead salts would be more soluble than the zinc salts, so that the galena would be leached more rapidly than the marmatite. With the dilution of such Cl'-rich waters with water containing less Cl', the Cl' concentration would fall below 0·1 N, and the lead would be reprecipitated, while the zinc would stay in solution, as, for example, in the water analysis quoted. The economic future of the Palmer Goldfield lies with both the gold mining and the tourist industries. An equitable solution to the competition between the two involves putting a dollar value on the historical evidence there for our Australian heritage.On 23 October 1986 the Queensland Government gazetted the Palmer River Reserves R16 of 16 200 hectares, in recognition of the competing land uses emerging in the region. The intention is that historically significant gold mining sites and relics will be preserved in situ with provision for continued gold exploration and mining.This paper explores and explains the administrative process of achieving a set of Management Guidelines for Rl6 within the Queensland political milieu. The result of that process is the achievement of some of the highest preservation standards in Australia, prohibiting surface disturbance of defined Category 1 sites, and no mining proposal has yet been refused approval.The Palmer Goldfield R16 experience is a major step in achieving a co-ordinated approach to both current mining and preservation of Queensland's mining heritage.

Most exploratory drilling in the N.S.W. coal fields has been conducted using convent- ional diamond drill rigs of modern design, us- ually truck or trailer mounted. Conventional diamond drill rigs have also been used exten- sively by the Queensland Department of Mines for coal exploration. However almost all of the exploratory drilling of surface mine coal prospects throughout Queensland has been conducted using rotary rigs typified by the Mayhew 1000 truck mounted unit. The rotary rig has proved capable of both rapid non-core drilling and core drilling with high core recoveries when modern core barrels have been used by experienced drillers. For deep or continuous core drilling, wire-line equipment is now in general use. Both wire-line and conventional coring is effected using stationary split inner tube barrels, for minimum core disturbance, maximum core recovery, ease and accuracy of logging and sub-sectional sampling. Diamond core bits are generally required in N.S.W., with water circu- lation. In Queensland, the generally softer coal measures strata can be successfully cored using tungsten carbide bits and air circulation is the preferred method where possible.

Until 1980 copper, lead and zinc sulphide slurries have been success- fully dewatered for rail and sea transport for many years at the Rose- bery site of North Broken Hill Holdings Ltd. utilizing conventional vacuum disc filtration systems. An upgrading and mill expansion program completed in 1981, which also permitted the introduction of ore streams changes, had resulted in difficulties dewatering copper and lead sulphide slurries to comply with transportable moisture limits. Following an extensive investigation which included both laboratory and pilot plant testing a program was commenced to replace the 2 vacuum disc filtration systems with 2 pressure filtration systems for use on copper and lead slurry dewatering and also to retain other existing vacuum disc filters as standby. An analysis of mill operations performance resulted in slurry storage tanks with a capacity equivalent to 20 hours of normal production being incorporated into the project. The pressure filters are mounted above the concentrate stock- piles. A sealed sloping floor incorporating launders is used to prevent any accidental contamination of the concentrate from pipe leakages, spillage, or from water hoses used for clean up purposes around the area. The project was completed in 1985 and operating performance has been better than that predicted from testwork. Equipment availability at 95076 together with the slurry storage capacity provided results in minimal requirement for the standby vacuum filtration system. Some typical operating results are given.

An integrated computer software system has been developed by Fluor Australia for modelling, mine planning and production scheduling of single or multi-strata deposits. Modelling of both quantitative and qualitative variables (e.g., thickness, basal elevation, density, grade/ash content) is performed via continuous, minimum curvature surface representations. These may be developed from inverse distance weighting or geostatistical kriging interpolation techniques in conjunction with bicubic spline surface interpolation. The modelling process, rather than being purely mathematical, incorporates facilities for reflecting structural geology interpretations (e.g., faulting, pinchouts) and geological boundary conditions (e.g., subcrop and outcrop). Volumetric programs provide the facility for continuous integration over models (at any specified integration increment) for any number of specified irregular polygonal panel areas or regular rectilinearly defined block plan areas. Multi-variable integration is available, incorporating any or all operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to provide multi-strata tonnages, etc., (e.g., Volume 1 * density 1 + Volume 2 density 2). These programs provide true three-dimensional integration with the facility for calculating results on an area by area, level by level, strata by strata as well as overall basis.

To counter depressed world nickel prices, a continuing effort is being made at Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter to reduce unit production costs. One major area in which production costs can be reduced is the substitution of coal for fuel oil. Two areas where this has been achieved to bring about a saving are, the addition of coal to flash furnace flux to reduce supplementary fuel oil requirements in flash smelting and the replacement of two oil-fired air preheaters with a coal-fired unit. These actions have resulted in coal replacing 67% of the current fuel oil requirement in flash smelting at the Kalgoorlie .Lckel Smelter.

Future mineral processing developments will be of two types. There will be a continuation of the advances of the last 20 years including major increases in equipment capacities, the development of reliable on-line instrumenta- tion, the use of digital computers for automatic control, and the greatly expanded use of in-situ leaching techniques. However, there will also be a need for innovations as the industry faces a different set of problems to those involved in cost and extraction efficiency considerations. These new problems include those relating to energy usage, environmental pressures, and the further development of large low grade deposits and small, high grade metallurgic- ally complex deposits. Present technology does not appear adequate to solve many of these new demands. New treat- ment concepts will be required, and the immediate outlook in this regard is not encouraging. A major research and development task in mineral processing over the next 20 years will be to seek out new ideas and develop them, and this must be pursued with imagination and determination. Both the continuation of the present research pro- grammes and the development of new methods will require a steady supply of highly qualified technical personnel. These people are not being produced in the numbers required, and this situation must be urgently rectified.

The variation in coal properties and the coal seam reduced level can be analysed using partial trend-surface analysis techniques. For the area studied seam reduced level and seam thickness data from the Bulli Coal yield trend-surfaces with a high coefficient of determination, since they have relatively small systematic local and random components in their overall variation. Sulphur content appears to have no significant re.gi_onal trend, and phosphorus content has a very weak regional trend. Other analytical variables have regional trends which are of intermediate strength. The strike-directions of.the statistically significant first degree! trend-surface are similar, sug-gesting.: that the variation of the several coal properties was controlled by a set of- related causes. The relations apparent from the dip and strike of the first degree trend-surfaces are similar to- those which are apparent from the trend- surface residuals and'from the results' of canonical trend-surface analysis.'.. The comparatively low winter rainfall, exposure to heavy salt laden coastal winds, and the consequent high evaporation rate, are important considerations in the rehabilitation of the Maslins Beach Sand Pit. The deficit of rainfall over evaporation is assessed at 1085 mm per annum. Such a coastal environment complicates the establishment of plants. The endemic flora found on the Sand Pit environs is mainly low wind-planed shrubs and mat plants. The dunes near the coast support an association dominated by Atriplex cinerea, Spinifex hirsutus, Scirpus nodosus, and Olearia axillaris. The coastal cliffs carry a more diverse vegetation dominated by Beyeria lechenaultii and Eutaxia microphylla. Overburden is used to develop a new landscape to screen operations, batter final faces, and cover rubbish at the nearby Council dump. The early overburden dumps were built with little regard for stability, but the more recent practice of using scrapers has resulted in more stable dumps. The erosion problems created by poor compaction have been controlled by contour banks, diversion drains, bitumen lined run-off drains, and hay mulching.

A viscosity model has been developed for both completely liquid and heterogeneous, partly crystallised slags in the Al2O3-CaO-æFeOÆ-SiO2 system in equilibrium with metallic iron. The Urbain formalism has been modified to describe the viscosities of the liquid slag phase over the complete range of compositions and a wide range of temperatures. The Roscoe equation has been used to describe the effect of presence of solid suspension (slurry effect) on the viscosity. The parameters of the viscosity model were optimised to describe large experimental data set in the low-order subsystems, as well as in the multi-component system. The computer package FACT was used for prediction of the proportion of solids and the composition of the remaining liquid phase. The model provides a good description of the experimental data (over four thousand experimental points) in liquid phase, and liquid + solid mixtures, over the complete range of compositions and a wide range of temperatures. This model can now be used for viscosity predictions in industrial slag systems. An example of the application of the new model to slag cleaning and reduction smelting processes is given in this paper.

The major operational objectives of a mine water resource management system (WRMS) are to supply the water needs of the mine and mill, to minimise disturbance to mining due to rainfall flooding or seepage and to dispose of excess water. Historically, company management have placed a significantly lower emphasis on managing the WRMS as compared to managing production. Changing Government legislation concerned with the disposal of water from mine sites is, in many cases making mining companies look more closely at how they manage their water. For example, within the next few years it is likely that prior to mining approval by the Government, mining operations will have to submit water management plans/budgets and contingency strategies in addition to operational plans. While the formulation of a comprehensive water management plan/budget is an additional cost to the company at the mine establishment stage, such plans can be beneficial to the operation in the longer term.The two keys for the efficient design, operation and development of a WRMS are the establishment of written goals which have managerial priority and secondly, access to appropriate good quality data. Managerial priority towards the WRMS will increase as a consequence of the education of mine operators in the benefits to the operation of good WRMS management or less desirably as a requirement to meet Government legislation. The collection of appropriate WRMS data is a more complex issue and to obtain information efficiently and cost effectively relies on the clear definition of the data application.

Compared with modern longwall coal mining systems, automation has not been developed very far in the underground metal minin industry. One of the main reasons for this is that present har rock mining systems do not produce ore with a controlled degre of fragmentation. The often poor fragmentation from the stopescauses large extra costs and precludes material which 1-ends itself to automationThe paper investigates the possibility c technology for automatic loading and trapconveyor belt to a shaft dump pocket. With this concept, it will be necessary to control the maximum fragment size by careful blasting design. The degree of fragmentation will have to be finer than is common to-day. The study shows that the belt conveyor mining con-cept with controlled fragmentation may be economically competitive with conventional cyclic loading and transport, even for an annual production as low as 0.5 mill. tonnes.. Fragmentation design and cost calculations have been based on a combination of the Kuznetsov relationship between blasting parameters and mean frag-ment size, and the Rosin-Rammler formula for fragment size distribution.

Mesothermal gold deposits of southern Alaska and Westland, New Zealand have both formed at the seaward edge of major collisional zones in the Pacific basin. In Alaska, production of large fluid volumes correlates in time with the addition of heat into the lower parts of the accreted terranes in the late stages of collisional orogeny. This heat was critical for driving both the metamorphic reactions that released the large volumes of fluid that carried the gold, and the contemporaneous widespread anatexis and magmatism. In Alaska's Chugach terrane, this heat was produced by subduction of a spreading ridge beneath the North America continental margin in the Eocene. The resulting products were the S-type granites and gold-bearing veins. The similar widespread S-type plutonism and gold veining in Westland's Buller terrane suggest that a similar tectonic event could have triggered ore formation along the southeastern edge of Gondwanaland. Based on the Alaskan model, a Devonian or Early Carboniferous age is favoured for high volume metamorphogenic fluid generation and gold vein formation in Westland.

It is a commonplace of our industry that prices of most minerals have been historically weak during the 1980s. The International Monetary Fund's index of prices of metals fell 25 per cent between 1980 and 1982, rose slightly in 1983, and has since fallen further. In December last year it was 37 per cent below its 1980 average. The few temporary exceptions to the mineral industry's malaise highlight the excess capacity, which largely explains the weakness of prices. The industry has painfully come to recognise that more satisfactory prices will not be restored until supply capability and demand move back into better balance. Mine capacity was installed in the expectation of much faster growth of demand than has occurred. For a variety of reasons mine and plant closures have been insufficient to restore equilibrium to the market-place. The industry may, therefore, have to resign itself to continued weak prices for some years more, at least by the yardstick of the 1970s. Growth rates of demand have slackened off in line with economic activity, and in response to continuing substitution and technological improvements. To the extent that the recent weakness of oil prices stimulates the industrial countries' activity, demand for non-fuel minerals may grow faster than most forecasters now predict. It is, however, much too early to say how long the weaker oil prices will persist, and even more difficult to estimate their probable effects. In typical post-war business cycles the usual response to recession was to batten down the hatches, and ride out the storm. Sooner or later, and probably sooner, demand resumed its previous trend path, and prices recovered. The market, in effect, bailed mines out of trouble; the more efficient could make attractive pre-tax profits whilst even the poor to mediocre could earn a satisfactory living. Prices rose at least as fast as general inflation, and in the early 1970s much faster. In retrospect those price rises of the early 1970s were historically abnormal but they did not appear so in the prevailing inflationary climate of the time. When the market failed in the early 1980s many of the hardest hit companies looked for scapegoats.

For 20 years the US Bureau of Mines has been researching strategies for improving the physical, social, and psychological work environment of the miner. The products of this program have shown that a consistent link exists between safety and productivity, and the key to this link is the use of effective human factors and management practices. There are specific research findings from the research projects of the Bureau on ergonomic design of mining equipment, redesign of tasks (especially materials handling) to minimize back injuries, human resource management techniques for increasing safety and productivity, and improved shift rotation schedules. Current research is continuing these themes with new applications to high technology mining systems, including computer assisted extraction devices and mine monitoring.
