The link between exploration success and new ideas from research and development (R&D), although often assumed, is rarely well explained or well illustrated. One issue is understanding the role of innovative ideas in the exploration process, and another is determining the relative contributing factors to an exploration success. A useful measure of gold exploration success over an extended time period and geographic area is discovery rate (θ): Discovery rate θ = gold discovered/exploration expenditure (usefully expressed as tonnes of gold per $1 million). The total gold discovered is strongly leveraged to discovery rate, as any increase in θ typically has a positive effect on exploration expenditure. Hence, improving the discovery rate is a key driver for a sustainable mineral industry, especially for gold. There are very few ways to influence θ beyond innovative R&D ideas and breakthroughs, and well-motivated and trained staff. The Australian gold industry has experienced exceptional exploration success with 9956 tonnes of gold discovered from 1979 to 2003, inclusive. This equates to: Discovery rate θ = 0.9 t/A$1 M Two-thirds of this gold has been found in the Yilgarn craton of Western Australia (6265 tonnes Au). Without this exploration success, there would have been no platform on which to build the current gold industry and to take advantage of elevated gold prices and advances in mining and processing. Several causes of the Western Australian gold success have been proposed, and more than one may be correct. Gold price, and mining and processing advances have all had influence; but exploration success and discovery of gold were essential to add to the miniscule resource base of 1979. A comparison of the exploration methods used to search for gold in the Yilgarn craton in 1979, and 1990, highlights a small number of breakthrough ideas introduced to the industry during the 1980s, and in most cases emanating directly from local R&D. By the 1990s, these ideas were being used in most gold exploration programs in the Yilgarn craton, and are still used today. These six breakthroughs are: epigenetic timing of gold deposit formation (ie after formation of rock sequence), chemical and mechanical role of host rocks, relevance of carbonate alteration haloes, gold dispersion in the regolith, optimal sampling media, and appreciation of landforms in exploration program design. Interestingly, gold exploration science in Western Australia entered the 1980s period without rigid paradigms in place regarding gold deposit formation; there was a balance between descriptive and genetic models, there was scope to research gold deposits from microscopic to global scales and there were highly effective industry research uptake processes in place: it is suggested here that these favourable conditions contributed to the exploration success and industry growth.

The Blue Cube Mineral Quantifier Inline (MQi) instrument uses reflective light spectroscopy and advanced chemometrics to measure mineral or elemental grade in a slurry line. The instrument takes scans continuously and sends data to the DCS or PLC control system.Controlling the concentrate grades on a flotation circuit using low-frequency measurements can be difficult or impossible, especially on a circuit that has fast process dynamics. The ability to rapidly measure changes in grade makes it possible to continuously manipulate the flotation circuit operating parameters such as level, airflow and reagent addition set points to optimise plant performance throughout changing conditions.At Barrick’s Porgera mine in Papua New Guinea the flotation circuit feeds sulfide concentrate slurry to a pressure oxidation circuit. In order to maximise gold recovery in the flotation plant and increase performance in the pressure oxidation process, there is a stringent requirement to maintain a stable and optimum sulfur grade. The gold recovery is directly affected by the sulfur grade as most of the gold at Porgera is submicroscopic and associated with the sulfides (disseminated?pyrite).Porgera considered various points in the flotation circuit for installing Blue Cube analysers. This was part of a plant upgrade to improve process control. Due to budget constraints it was decided to initially only install one Blue Cube analyser on the final concentrate stream of the flotation circuit measuring sulfur, sulfides, gold and particle size. The accuracy of the calibration results were very good for all these properties. The sulfur measurement was used in an advanced control system to optimise and stabilise the grade. The paper presents comparisons between mineral grades determined using analytical laboratory analyses and the online Blue Cube data measurements, as well as benefits achieved by measuring grade online. "To provide an indication of expected performance of the mine and mill, feasibility studies should include an assessment of the expected day-to-day variability in process plant feed. Attempts to do this based on conventional resource models will be flawed as such studies fail to consider and account for the in-built smoothing (averaging) of input data.This can lead to one of two situations: an expensive, over-engineered process plant that can cope with every possible situation, or operational strategies that fail to manage the natural variability within the orebody and the impact of day-to-day operational decision-making.In both cases the value of the project diminishes through excessive capital costs or reduced throughput or recovery during operations.Unlike conventional estimation techniques, the geostatistical method of conditional simulation can reproduce the inherent variability of the deposit. Once a valid model has been developed, it is possible to analyse the model using a transfer function that simulates the proposed mining processes and provides a representation of the likely variation of mill feed characteristics at any time scale.The case study demonstrates how the proposed mining strategy would result in mill feed being considerably more variable than expected, resulting in poor recovery, low throughput and potential breaches of environmental conditions. The usual focus of papers on fatty acid collector action in non-sulfide flotation is on the adsorption of the carboxylate and/or neutral molecule species at the mineral-solution interface. Little attention is paid as to whether or not the solution conditions correspond to true solutions, micellar and other self-assembly objects or precipitates. Our examination of the solution chemistry of the important fatty acid collector, oleic acid, has revealed that many, if not most investigators set their experimental conditions to be in micellar or precipitate domains while arguing, often by implication, that they have only solute species present. We have investigated the equilibrium solution domains usually encountered in studies of oleic acid flotation of such minerals as barite, calcite and fluorite. The alkaline earth-fatty acid and liquid oleic acid precipitate phases exert a strong influence on the solution chemistry, a fact not often appreciated in many studies.

Computer programs for the storage, retrieval and use of basic thermodynamic and physical property data for chemical substances are described. Methods are presented for the collection, critical assessment and pre- processing of source data for files containing enthalpy, entropy and heat capacity data for 3000 compounds, enthalpy and excess entropy for 200 dilute solutions and critical propert- ies and vapour pressure for 600 compounds. Retrieval programs are discussed which allow the tabulation or plotting of many basic and derived thermodynamic properties for chemical substances or balanced reactions. Examples are given of the use of such data to infer the stability or corrosion resistance of materials and the feasibility, yield and heat release of reactions. A general purpose calculation program is discussed which allows the equilibrium compos- ition to be found for complex systems with many species and phases, using the method of Gibbs energy minimization. Methods of correction for non-ideal behaviour in these systems are discussed, as well as methods for fixing, maximizing or minimizing any desired property of the system. Examples are given of the simulation of various laboratory Experiments and industrial processes by this method.

The underground mining industry is seeing unprecedented shortages in skilled labour. Migration to Australia being at an all-time low is a leading concern, with pandemic-induced border closures and lockdowns only exacerbating the skills shortage, not causing it. The skills shortage is forecast to peak in 2023 and remain high beyond 2025. With this skills shortage in mind, mining companies throughout Australia are trying to deal with stricter protocols around Health and Safety (H&S) legislation, as well as more stringent controls on quality assurance, particularly as underground mines are reaching greater depths and extending into ‘unchartered territory’. The cumulation of this is proving to be a major hurdle in ‘effective’ operational geotechnical management. The drive for automation in mining is bringing another level of complexity. However, ‘once automation is up and running, it presents the opportunity to access talent pools that may not normally be available. There is also a change in skillset that will be required to drive automation. ‘The top two emerging roles that will be critical for the future of the mining industry are artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) specialists, and process-automation specialists’ (Writer, 2021). If anything positive has come from the pandemic, it has shown that remote working can be effective and that the drive for automation and critical evaluation of skills required on-site should be given greater priority. UQ acknowledges that the industry is changing, and that digital technology is required to be offered in mining related disciplines. Industry and academia need to do more to promote geotechnical engineering in mining and balance the curriculum to suit the future of mining and make it more enticing. The average cost of a geotechnical failure is about $5 million in coalmines and can be into the hundreds of millions of dollars if production is affected (Cartledge Mining and Geotechnics, 2020). The cost of a good geotechnical design far outweighs the potential losses if a failure were to occur. This alludes to the growing importance of experienced geotechnical consultancies playing a pivotal role in managing mine site geotechnical hazards, while the industry is developing the next generation of geotechnical engineers.

GEMNet, (Grade Estimation using Mapping Networks), is a grade/reserve estimation software system that uses the artificial intelligence technique known as neural networks to perform reserve estimates from both two- and three-dimensional data samples from a mineral deposit. The system is the result of research carried out over the past three years into the feasibility of using neural networks for reserve estimation at the AIMS Research Unit in the Department of Mineral Resources Engineering at the University of Nottingham. This paper describes the architecture of the GEMNet system including details of the neural network components of the system. The performance of the GEMNet system is then compared to several other widely used reserve estimation techniques on two reserve estimation examples. The results produced by the GEMNet system compare favourably with more conventional estimation techniques, but require fewer assumptions to be made about the form of the data used, and do not require the use of complex mathematical modelling.

Mining cycles have come and gone and with them there have been dramatic swings in the levels of interest and student entry into minerals-related education programs, hence graduate supply to the industry. So what is the problem? These trends will keep happening and the industry will keep on keeping on – or will it?This paper discusses recent trends in Australian minerals education programs and some international examples, together with some of the more recent initiatives taken by both the minerals education sector and the industry, such as the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC) and MEA. The real problem is that things will not just keep going the way they have over recent decades – there will come a time when there is no longer a supply of minerals academics available to provide the educational programs; and universities will simply shut down subcritical mass mining programs and invest in the much more lucrative programs such as commerce, law, medicine, etc. By the time this starts to happen it will be at least ten years too late for any last-minute reactive response by industry, if they were to try and avert such a consequence. International experience with mining programs bears out this scenario quite clearly.It is therefore timely for industry individual mines and mine management to take a much more strategic look at their role in the education sector. Sustainable mining also means sustainable minerals education – without one, the other will not function over the long-term. There is a pressing need for long-term strategic buy-in by industry into the education sector – not just for the good times, but also through the tough times. This means much more than a scholarship here or there, but includes such commitments as major industry-university research partnerships; collaborative recruitment initiatives and much more. The paper will discuss a range of such issues, problems and opportunities to address these important issues through strategic, comprehensive, long-term commitments by industry and equally significant and appropriate responses by the education sector. The paper outlines the adoption and evolution of ‘sustainable development’ as a concept in tailings management practices in the mining industry over the last 30 years. Over 500 lives have been lost in tailings facility accidents since World War 2. The paper outlines commonalities in many of these accidents, particularly the role of excess water. It considers the role effective tailings management can play in enhancing the social acceptability of mining in the future.Tailings management is a major operating cost at many mines while the cost of successfully closing tailings facilities is also very high. Current tailings management practices in the industry are outlined. The technical and engineering challenges of reducing potential risks associated with tailings by reducing water entrainment are described. The successful development of practical techniques to better manage tailings and reduce water consumption and wastage are described. For example, water removal in the alumina industry to produce a paste for dry stacking is now a reality.The future adoption of these new risk reducing techniques by the industry is discussed and the implications of the adoption or non-adoption of these techniques on the industry’s future ‘social licence’ is considered.

The development of reliable and accurate solution sampling systems plus on-line atomic absorption spectrophotometers and voltammetric analysers at Pasminco Metals - EZ's (PMEZ) zinc refinery at Hobart, Tasmania, has led to extensive implementation of On-Stream Analysis (OSA) throughout the hydrometallurgical circuit. These systems complement industrial autotitrator and colorimetric analysers and with the comprehensive use of a powerful integrated Distributed Control System (DCS), provide extensive monitoring and control of all the important in solution' parameters for the plant. Samples can be left unaltered, or filtered or settled, to remove solids. They are then precision diluted and pneumatically transported to analyser shelters, where they are analysed for zinc, acid, copper, cadmium, lead, antimony, cobalt, nickel, mercury and ferrous, ferric and/or total iron. The range of analyses depends on the sample itself. The results are used for feed forward and/or feedback control of reagents where possible, or simple trend monitoring and out-of-specification alarming when closed loop control is not practical. The overall system reliability and accuracy is such that many daily composite plant samples are no longer analysed off-line. Operator sampling has also been reduced, and in two places, autotitrators with automatic sample pre-treatment have been installed for preparing and analysing samples collected by operators.

Declining from surface provides access, haulageway, ventilation and provision for ser- vices for stoping and development. Three boom jumbos and 3.8 m3 capacity diesel loaders are used in decline development, the majority of which is driven at a gradient of 1 in 9. Primary ventilation is drawn from the mine through raisebored airways and high pressure contra rotating fans provide secondary ventil- ation. To meet schedules a special decline crew was formed on similar lines to a mining con- tractor. The basis of payment for the mining party was changed and the net effect was to accelerate development. Ground conditions demand constant support and this is achieved with chemical anchor rock bolts, multistrand grouted bolts and shotcrete. Major local shear zones are encountered and when they are to be driven through, a combina- tion of the above methods, involving a spiling technique, is used.

Education for the Mineral Industry in Australia developed in an uncoordinated but effective fashion till the mid 1960's, with recognised quality in graduates, with output matching demand, and with industry needs being fulfilled. Then in the space of a further 20 years, as company structures expanded, as the number, complexity, and costs of mineral projects escalated, as educational facilities, costs and politics increased, as community perceptions and aspirations changed, as government control of minerals and education increased, and as mineral sales cycles and markets fluctuated widely, the very fabric of Australian Mineral Education fell in tatters. Extractive Metallurgy Education suffered most in this collapse, and no compre- hensive remedies have been initiated. We are all the losers. In the 1990's, the extraction of Australian minerals and metals will increase in international significance, and the education of Extractive Metallurgists must meet this need. After examining the current situation, a series of management strategies are proposed to enable Extractive Metallurgical Education to survive and prosper in the next two decades and beyond. These strategic proposals involve industry, the government, the educational bodies, and individuals, in a range of short and long term objectives, policies, and actions.

A novel solvent extraction process, called the SOHNEX process, has been developed at the University of Utah. In this process, the organic and the aqueous phases flow countercurrently in a horizontal vessel, and the emulsion between the two liquid phases is generated by high-velocity gas jets injected at the bottom. The gas jets are located at certain intervals along the bottom of the vessel with phase disengagement zones on either side of the plume zone created by the gas jet. The system is simple, having no mechanical moving parts or complex internal structures, and yet provides good contact between the phases with minimal backmixing. Tests have shown that emulsions with a wide range of specific interfacial area, including that typically encountered in mixer-settlers, can be generated in this process. It has significant built-in flexibility of operation including the control of the flowrate and hold-up of each liquid phase. The SOHNEX process overcomes the difficulties in the operation of conventional solvent extraction equipment such as mixer-settlers and column extractors. A major advantage of the SOHNEX process is that the energy of mixing can be closely controlled by adjusting the strength of the gas jet. This allows an optimal control of the drop-size distribution of the dispersed phase and thus the specific interfacial area. The process is continuous, and any number of extraction and separation stages may be built into a single vessel. The gas can be recirculated in a closed loop, thus eliminating solvent loss and mist problems, especially for high-temperature operations. The SOHNEX problem can handle solutions that contain suspended solids and that form third phases. The simplicity of the equipment and operation with low maintenance will mean much reduced capital and operating costs as well as low environmental risks and improved safety. The SOHNEX process has been tested for continuous copper extraction from a dilute solution. Calculations also showed that uranium and other radioactive elements can readily be extracted in a small unit of the SOHNEX extractor while satisfying the nuclear criticality condition.

Morro Agudo is an underground zinc and lead mine owned by Nexa Resources. The mine uses room and pillar as the main mining method. The recovery of pillars as well as the opening of new excavations using sublevel stoping as mining method has been studied. On some occasions, the need to recover pillars and open a stope by using the sublevel method happens in a region that is already excavated or in deeper areas than those mined so far. These changes represent a major geotechnical challenge due to the complex openings of the mine and interaction between two different mining methods. Historically, geotechnical mapping, kinematic analysis and a 2D numerical model were used to evaluate the new mine openings, and in 2021, 3D numerical model was introduced, which enabled global and local assessment of new excavations impact and the stability of openings after recoveries. The 3D model, made with MAP3D, is used to evaluate each pillar to be recovered, considering the spans of the resulting openings, the ideal sequencing of removal to maintain stability, in addition to the impact and geometry of the pillars left in the chambers. Pillar recoveries done in 2021 and the impact of it on the pillars left were the sources of the back analysis to calibrate parameters inputted on numerical model to assess recovery on new chambers and Phyllite has been considered into the model and it has been a source of instability due to its parallel position to roof of room and pillars and stope hanging walls.

The west coast of New Zealand’s south island is host to a large number of placer goldfields that stretch from the Westport area in the north to Gillespies Beach in the south and inland to the foothills of the Southern Alps. This area is host to a large number of alluvial, glacial and strand line deposits ageing in range from Recent to Tertiary. In recent years exploration models have been developed for off shore placer deposits on the continental shelf.Gold mining on the west coast has exploited placer gold resources from the 1860s to present, and with the recent surge in the gold price the industry is currently undergoing a resurgence. The current increase in mining is dominated by small-scale mechanical operations usually involving one to two people at each site; a few larger operations also exist such as the Grey River Dredge.Mining methods range from using floating bucket dredges to small diggers. Some of the mining technologies used are similar to those employed during the great gold rushes of the 19th century. Exploration and grade control techniques can be very rudimentary often relying on previous sampling programs or wide spaced bulk sample drill holes. Some bulk sample drilling is used on the larger operations as a form of grade control, most of the small operations tend not to use any ore control sampling prior to mining. Extraction techniques relying on simple gravity based designs with riffle tables or spirals are the most commonly used. Environmental standards are very high within New Zealand and require operators to return mined areas to preagreed to landforms. The high rainfall experienced on the west coast causes challenges to operators in regard to water quality. Technical issues combined with often limited capital provide for challenges to the operations.

At Neavesville gold-silver (electrum) mineralization occurs in steeply-dipping zones of intense fracturing, brecciation and quartz veining within rhyolitic pyroclastics, carbohaceous shales and andesites. Hydro- thermal alteration extends over an area of greater than 3 by 1.5 km. In rhyolitic tuffs, highly silicified zones containing quartz- adularia-illite assemblages are flanked by less silicified assemblages composed of albite, illite-montmorillonite and chlorite. The mineralogy ana sequence of alteration are comparable with the alteration zones which envelop the steam-producing fissures of the active Wairakei and Broadlands geothermal fields. Primary fluid inclusions in quartz from five fissure veins in the Neavesville field show maximum homogenisation temperatures ranging from 220 - 260¦C and salinities of 0.0 - 1.1 wt. % NaCl equivalent, which cover a similar range to actual measured temperatures and salinities in geothermal fluids at Wairakei aria riroaolan¦s. The age of the rhyolitic pyroclastics and related alteration and mineralization is probably Pliocene and Neavesville therefore represents a fossil geothermal system.

Many open cut mines extend to depths well below the natural water table level with constant dewatering required to maintain operations. When mining activities cease the groundwater starts to fill the void and pit lakes form. The resultant pit lake is directly connected to the surrounding water table and understanding the hydrological and chemical evolution of these lakes is important for minimising environmental impacts. In Western Australia alone there are currently 1800 mine voids and more than 150 mines operating below the water table (Johnson and Wright, 2003). In conjunction with BHP Billiton Iron Ore, CSIRO has been undertaking research to measure and model rates of evaporation from pit lakes in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Routine, in-pit geological mapping of highwall at Central Queensland Coal Associates (C.O.C.A.) deep strip mines has proved too slow for the increasingly greater highwall lengths which require mapping. This realiz- ation has encouraged the search for faster mapping methods and after trial of ground photographic methods has resulted in the adoption of interpretive mapping off stereo cover, oblique -- aerial photography. This entails using a Cessna 182 light aircraft flying at its slowest speed, the aerial meth- od finally employed consisting of two Vinten, air reconnaissance cameras mounted in parallel and simultaneously taking both colour and black and white photographs of the mine high- wall. The respective 1:500 scale enlargements produced from the 70mm format films combine to present the sharpest resolution attainable under the field conditions pertaining and such information on weathered material as only colour photography can fully render. Total costs for the aerial photography method are estimated to be about the same as those for conventional in-pit mapping. Whilst total costs are comparable, geo- logist's time for mapping a 10 km. length is reduced to less than half that for in-pit mapping (for Stage 1, fully accurate mapping) and accuracy and detail are greatly improved. The application of modern sciences prior to nineteenseventies have resulted in the placing of Continental Drift theory into broader concept of Plate Tectonics. The concept is applied to explain the Cenozoic Tectonics of North Sumatera.Oceanic crust flooring the Indian Ocean is moving northeasterly and being obliquely subducted at a Benioff zone along the western margin of Asian Plate, marked by the Sunda Trench in the west coast of Sumatera. This phenomenon was generated since late Mesozoic, continued during Cenozoic era up to present day, resulted an exellent example of arc-trench system which can be traced along SW - NE transect of North Sumatera.The oblique-subducting plate of Indian Ocean beneath Asian Plate, together with spreading of Andaman seafloor beginning in Pliocen epoch, have led to the origin of Sumateran Fault System; the System extends throughout the length of Sumatera island. In the region under review it comprises almost contiguous set of broadly SE-trending. Evidences for transcurent-dextral displacement have been observed.
