With respect to theories of recrystalliza-tion in metals plastically deformed. it has been said that the present status of this subject is far from satisfactory.1 It may also be said that before any mechanism of recrystallization for metals and alloys can be set forth in a satisfactory manner, there must be made available considerable data on orientation changes that occur during the deformation and recrystallization processes. Although extensive data have been published on recrystallization in single crystals and in poly-crystalline specimens, more results of a type that can be classified according to simple orientation changes would be desirable in this complex field. It might even be said that before classifications are made according to types of orientation changes, it may be possible to classify a considerable amount of data into certain kinds of orientation states if groups of common or nearly common orientation occur. Methods for computing the probability of occurrence for various types of groups have been published2 and it has been pointed out in particular that it should be possible to analyze orientation data for high-order twin relationships between old and new grains even when agreement is not at all exact. In this connection, work on recrystallization in silicon ferrite reported in a paper concerned with complex groups of annealing twins3 indicated that some data were consistent with primary nucleation OCcurring according to a second-order or a third-order twin transformation. However, further work in this latter direction was definitely needed. It is, therefore, the purpose of the present paper to report data and analyses for primary nucleation in silicon ferrite following small deformations that have been carried Out at the Pittsfield Works' Laboratory of the General Electric Co. Analyses have been made with the aid of standard groups of twins that are reported elsewhere.4 PReparation oF Specimens and Experimental Procedure The material used in the present investigation was taken from the same heat of steel as that .used in a prior report.3 The finished strip in both cases was made by the Allegheny-Ludlum Steel Corporation according to methods that produce a high degree of preferred crystal orientation. Samples with large grains had the following composition: 3.45 per cent Si, 0.003 C, 0.008 P, 0.020 S, 0,075 Mn, 0.03I A1 and 0.072 Cu. Thickness of specimens was 0.012 inches. Plastic deformation was produced by cold-rolling the samples on a mill with 8-in. diameter rolls, the plane of the sample in each case coinciding with an XY plane (the plane of projection for the stereo-graphic plots) and the elongation occurring in the X direction. In general, elongations were held to about 3 or 4 per cent.

The greatcr part of the literature on the plastic behavior of magnesium dates back to that active period of research in crystal mechanics immediately following the widespread preparation of isolated metallic crystals large enough for the application of conventional methods of mechanical testing. These investigations, performed on single crystals, revealed an analogy between zinc and magnesium with respect to their fundamental mode of deformation. in the operation of glide and twinning, respectively, on crystallographically similar planes. Mathewson and Phillips (1928)' by geometrical analysis identified the plane in magnesium as the twinning plane. Schiebold and Siebel (1931) confirmed this twinning planc, established the basal plane as the plane of slip, and a digonal axis I as the slip direction. They also rcported twin formation in a secondary role on the {IOI} plane. Schmid (1931)³ summarized and discussed the earlier evidence and presented the results of his own experiments on the effect of temperature and small amounts of soluble elements. From X-ray studies on extended wire single crystals, he concluded that slip along the basal plane in the direction of the digonal axis I closest to the stress direction was the sole slip system operating at atmospheric temperature. This conclusion was based on experiments with crystals of many different orientations relative to the stress axis. Special attention was directed to the basal plane and the digonal axis I, as the plane and direction of greatest atomic density. Determinations of resolved shear stress at the onset of plastic yielding-—i.e., the critical resolved shear stress—were also made; the average of these calculations showing 82.9 grams per sq. mm. This value varied only slightly up to 300°C. at which temperature it was found to decrease to 70.5 grams per sq. mm. When mining operations were first instituted in the mines of the Miami Copper Co., at Miami, Ariz., the relatively hard character of the ground in the western section of the property made it seem advisable to use a wide shrinkage stope and pillar system. The system as finally evolved was applied to the mining of 2,300,000 tons of ore by the use of stopes and pillars each 50 ft. in width. Development, mining and extraction of this reserve has been continuously in progress since 1910, and the final stages of extraction are now reached. A complete survey of all phases of this system can therefore be made. Modification in working methods was obviously necessary, and the system to be described is believed to be typical of the best features. Development The preliminary work had three main objectives: The opening of a haulage level, the construction of a drawing-off level, and the driving of sublevels for use in stoping. In addition to these, some extra sublevel drifting was necessary to determine exactly the boundaries of the orebody, the general outline having been determined by churn drilling. This development was based on the requirements of stopes 50 ft. wide, with pillars 50 ft. wide between each stope. The length of these units varied from 200 to 500 ft.. Haulage Level The tramming level was 50 ft. below the floor of the stopes, and the tramming lines were run parallel with the long axis of the stopes. These lines were also beneath the middle of the stopes and pillars. Each line therefore served one stope or one pillar, this arrangement making it possible to load along an entire stope without switching or uncoupling. This advantage is apparent principally during the process of stoping when rapid drawing of excess broken ore is desirable. SOMEWHAT biased by pride in twentieth century achievements, most of us mining engineers and diamond-drill operators look upon core drilling as a relatively modern practice. The invention of the diamond drill is generally ascribed to Rudolf Leschot, who made use of diamonds in 1846 in drilling blast holes in the Mont Cenis tunnel in Switzerland. In vain we search Agricola and other early writers on mining for signs of diamond drilling. We have, therefore, concluded that it was unknown until the middle of the last century. The trouble with this conclusion, as most prospectors will tell us, is that we "don't dig deep enough"; for it now appears that the archeologists have been putting one over on us for the last fifty years.

Oil agglomeration experiments were carried out on coal fines to study the effect of process variables such as pulp density, bridging oil dosage and intensity of agitation on (i) size distribution and (ii) yield of agglomerated product. It has been observed that the growth of agglomerates follows a self-preserving behaviour and using this, a characteristic curve has been derived. This curve has been found to be independent of the process variables. It has also been noted that the growth of agglomerates follows second order kinetics. In an attempt to model the process for predicting the size distribution and yield of agglomerates at different levels of the variables, the cumulative 50 percent of the agglomerates passing size (d50) has been correlated with the variables (i) through the kinetic equation and (ii) directly. These equations, coupled with the characteristic curve can predict the size distribution of the agglomerates at any levels of the variables tested. The yield of agglomerates has been found to follow a definite relationship with d50.

Henry Marion Howe, in whose memory we are gathered together, was one of the great thinkers who develop from time to time to whom is given the rare gift of synthesis. Analysis is given to few, but synthesis, the ability to show the relation of all parts to each other and thus to give a clear picture of the whole, is reserved for the very few. Analysis can be achieved by honesty, intelligence, and industry, but synthesis is only given to genius. Professor Howe's crowning achievement is the picture of the whole iron-carbon series shown in Fig. I, which places steel, malleable, gray iron, mottled and chilled irons in their proper relation to each other and shows the essential unity of the series. Perhaps his best statement of the case is found on page go of the Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron in these words: " Each member of the gray cast-iron series consists of the metallic matrix approximately equivalent to that member of the steel-white-cast-iron series to which it corresponds in percentage of combined carbon with its continuity broken up—by masses of graphite ..." Apparently he had taken considerable interest in this idea around the turn of the century, for he refers to a discussion at the Franklin Institute in I900 in which he said: "Though many others had probably conceived this relation between the steels and cast irons, it was here enunciated for the first time, so far as I know. It was received with great incredulity." The concept was explained in some detail in a paper on "The Constitution of Cast Iron" presented before the A.S.T.M. in 1902 when Professor Howe was retiring president of that young society. In the discussion Dr. Sauveur stated that he was "very well acquainted with Professor Howe's theory of the constitution of cast iron," and went on to say that while he "shared it to the fullest extent, some foundrymen . . . claim cast iron is a metal entirely different from steel . . . that steel and cast iron have very little in common, and that therefore the knowledge gained in the study of steel is of little or no value in the study of cast iron." Dr. Moldenke, in discussing the same paper, said he had been working on the same theory for 12 years but he laid no claim to publication. Discussing the difference in the micro-structure of the metallic matrix, Professor Howe pointed out that "such minor structural differences are indeed to be expected, because of the difference in the conditions under which these constituents are generated. "One difference in these conditions is that the steel of most micrographs has been either forged or at least treated thermally in such a way as to give a new structure radically different from that which formed during the initial solidification, whereas the cast irons have not. The formation and growth of Guinier-Preston zones in Al-Zn alloys containing 4.4, 6.8, 9.7, and 12.4 at. pct zn have been studied by the X-ray small-angle scattering method. Particular attention was paid to the effects of small amounts of third elements silver, silicon, and magnesium on the formation and growth of G.P. zones. It was noticed that an appreciable number of G.P. zones were formed during the course of rapid cooling and that the size, volume fraction, and number of these G.P. zones were influenced by the existence of the third elements. During subsequent aging it was also found that the addition of both silver and silicon lowered the temperature for the growth of G.P. zones, whereas the addition of magnesium raised it. These results were explained in terms of the mutual interactions among zinc atoms, vacancies, and the third elements. A number of studies on the formation and growth of Guinier-Preston zones in Al-Zn alloys have been reported.1-4 Panseri and Federighii have found that the initial stages of zone growth take place at temperatures as low as around -100°C. For investigation of the mechanism of the initial stages of zone growth, growth studies must be carried out at low temperatures. In order to investigate the possibility of the formation of G.P. zones by the nucleation mechanism or the spinodal decomposition during quenching which was reported by Rundman and Hilliard,5 the examination of the as-quenched structure must be performed. In this paper the investigation of the early stages of the formation and growth were determined by means of the X-ray small-angle scattering method. With this technique, change of X-ray scattering intensities was measured while quenched specimens were heated slowly from liquid-nitrogen temperature to room temperature. At as-quenched state and after heated to room temperature, investigation of zone size, volume fraction, and zone number per unit volume was carried out. Measurements on these specimens yielded information on the early stages of zone formation and growth. Measurements were made also on specimens quenched to and aged at room temperature. From these measurements the previously reported model6 for the later stages of growth is confirmed; namely, the larger zones grow at the expense of smaller ones. Three elements, silver, silicon, and magnesium, were chosen as the third elements for the following reasons: Silver. In the binary A1-Ag alloy the spherical disordered 77' zones were observed immediately after quenching.7 Therefore, in the Al-Zn-Ag alloys, it is suggested that silver atoms might induce cluster formation during quenching. Also, since the migration energy of the zinc atoms was found to be raised by the addition of silver atoms,' silver atoms may have a great effect of the zinc diffusion, especially during low-temperature agings. Silicon. The effects of the addition of silicon atoms were found to be marked, especially at low-tempera-ture aging. In the binary Zn-Si system, no mutual solid solubilities between silicon and zinc9 and no in-termetallic compounds10 are reported to exist. Shashkov and Buynov11 investigated the behavior of silicon atoms in Al-Zn alloys and showed that silicon was not in the G.P. zones. The interaction between silicon atoms and vacancies is strong enough to increase the quenched-in vacancy concentration.* Magnesium. Magnesium atoms are reported to trap quenched-in vacancies and after much longer aging times these trapped vacancies will become free and act as diffusion carriers.13 Therefore at intermediate aging times, the diffusion of zinc atoms in Al-Zn-Mg alloys will be slower than in the binary Al-Zn alloys, whereas at longer times zinc diffusion will become faster. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys used in this investigation had compositions of 4.4, 6.8, 9.7, and 12.4 at. pct Zn with or without 0.1 and 0.5 at. pct Ag, Si, or Mg. The alloys were prepared from high-purity aluminum, zinc, silver, silicon, and magnesium, with each metal having a purity better than 99.99 pct. The analyzed composition of the specimens is given in Table I. The measurements of the X-ray small-angle scattering were carried out with foils of 0.20 mm thick. The change of the scattering intensity was always measured at the fixed scattering angle of 20 = 2/3 deg. This angle exists nearly on the position of the intensity maximum. The value of the interparticle interference function14 which has large effect in this range of angles may not change abruptly in the case of the spherical shape of small zones. Therefore, from the above considerations, it is concluded that an increase of the intensity measured at this constant angle corresponds to an increase of the average radius and volume fraction of G.P. zones. THE dislocation theory of plastic flow originated in 1928, when Prandtl1 suggested that the internal damping of metals of plastic origin might arise from the motion of a crystalline imperfection. Following this, Dehlinger2 employed a similar imperfection in a theory of recrystallization. The first detailed theoretical discussions were those of E. Orowan3 and G. I. Taylor4 in 1934. The resulting theory was gen- eralized by J. M. Burgers5 in 1939. Mott and Nabarro, in England, and Seitz and Read,6 in the United States, started an extensive examination of the atomic theory of dislocations in the period between 1939 and 1941. However, this development was arrested by the mar and was not taken up again until after 1945. Since 1946, the field has been the object of very intense activity, particularly in the United States and England. Dislocations are beautiful and intricate imperfections; they are sufficiently complicated to account for the great variety of phenomena encountered in the field of plastic flow. Above all, the dislocation concept enables us to understand how a metal or other plastic solid can deform inelastically under very small stresses at temperatures far below the melting point. (written discussion*)..-The mode of intercrystalline oxidation which the authors" have so well observed and described is characteristic of nickel that has been exposed' to: the action of an oxidizing atmosphere at higher temperatures, such as, those at which; it is annealed or heated for rolling or forging. Oxidation under such conditions proceeds inward from the surface along the, crystal boundaries' producing a net-work, probably of oxide; which causes a very brittle condition of this surface material. This, in turn, generally results in surface cracking and checking during further, rolling and a defective sheet or other product is produced. An example of this is shown in Fig. 2, which shows the surface, of a badly surface-cracked sheet of nickel produced by incorrect heating con-ditions. A cross-section of this sheet etched with nitric acid is shown in Fig. 1, which reveals the intercrystalline oxidation network adjacent to both surfaces.These layers are so brittle that it is not possible to deform them by rolling without severe cracking along these lines or, planes of weakness. The best, and possibly only, remedy for this condition lies in its prevention by the maintenance of a neutral soft flame for heating and annealing nickel during the entire course of its manufacture. I should like to suggest that, those making microscopic investigations of nickel and nickel-rich alloys try the use of acetic-acid .solutions of nitric acid for etching these metals rather than aqueous solutions, of nitric acid. I have found that a solution containing 50 per cent. nitric acid, from 25-45 -per. cent. acetic acid, and from 25-5 per cent. water gives excellent results with. Wrought and cast nickel and Morsel metal and superior results to those obtained with nitric acid, alone. The acetic. acid seems to inhibit the passivity that nickel often assumes toward nitric acid and much more uniform etching may, be obtained. The proportions of nitric and acetic, acid may be varied somewhat from those given without mate-rially altering the quality of the etching, although without any distinct improvement in it.

ABOUT a year and a half ago, at the San Francisco meeting of the American Chemical Society, in connection with the excursions to local smelting-works, I had occasion to show some lantern-slides illustrating the recent commercial development of electrical methods for precipitating the suspended matter from smelter-smoke, the underlying phenomena of which were clearly brought to the attention of the technical public by Sir Oliver Lodge as long ago as 1884. In the Journal of industrial and Engineering Chemistry, August, 1911, most of these views were reproduced, together with an account of the work from its beginning up to July, 1911. To-day I wish particularly to show you some of the further developments of the work since that time; but in order to make these clear they will be prefaced by a brief abstract of the article above referred to. The removal of suspended particles, front gases, by the aid of electric discharges is by no means a new idea. As early as 1824 we' find it suggested by Hohlfeld 1 as a means of suppressing ordinary smoke, and again a quarter of a, century later by Guitard.2 These suggestions, which do not seem to have stimulated any practical study of the question, were soon entirely forgotten, and only brought to light again by Sir Oliver Lodge,3 many years after he himself had independently rediscovered the same phenomena and brought them to public attention 4 in a lecture before the Liverpool Section of the So-

The plan of organizing a summer class of students of tha Bchool of Mines, for the practical study of mioing and miner's work, rewived at the outset the following cordial indorsement: ...." 1 have thonght over the plan proposed by you of taking the students to the mines during the summer, acd of having them actuaily ttrke part, under the direction of skilled worktnbn, in dl the various kinde of mining work; and of using them as a cerps of engineers to make inside and outside surreys, particularly with a view to the detailed study of the geology of the mine. I have no beitation in saying, that if the students have been previously instructed in the theoretical part of thrir studies, by lectitras and practice during the winter, the plan would be an admirable one. Frorn the work you have done at our mines this spring, I feel sure that you would be perfectly competent to curry out your plan, and 1 shall gladly aid you in uny wny I can. A volunteer class of thirteen students was formed, and the first summer school was held at Drifton, in July and August of that year (1877). The following extract, from an editorial notice in the iden of the organization of the school and the work required of the stiudens. "The students, on reporting to Professor Munroe, were divided into sqoade of two or three men each, and on Monday, July 2d, were aesigned to the qre of skilled miners, selected for the purpose by the mine boss, for instruction in gangway work. Half of the students worked in the morning and the other half in the atternoon, one squad at a time with each miner, The times of going and coming to and from work were so arranged that each student spent four to four and a half hours in the mine each day. Steels containing 0.4 and 0.8 pet C have been transformed isothermally at pressures up to 34 kbuv. Decomposilion mechanisms are so intimately related to phase equilibvia that, as the equilibria shift under high pressure, the microstruclures of the decomposition producls change, maintaining at pressure the same correspondence between a given phase equilibrium and a given microstructure as a1 1 atm. A bainitic unicvo-structure occurs in these steels at high pressure that IS observed only at 1 aim abole 1.4 pct C. This strrrcl111,e 1s ruliorzalized in terms of the effect of pressure on the transformation to lower bainite. The pressuve depetlderlce of the kinetics of pearlile formation is descrihed by an absolute rule theory amalysis. The activation volume for the transformation is 7 cu cm per mlole, which is indicative of a phase-interface transformation-rate cotntrol mechanism. This fortmulation, when expressed in terms of known solule effects on the energelics of tvansformation, gives promise of explaining the effects of alloying elemenls on hnrden-abilily, particularly that of 'coball. KINETIC processes in solids are functions of the primary thermodynamic variables of state: composition, temperature, and pressure. Until the development of high-pressure techniques' that permitted the generation of sustained high pressure at high temperatures, metallurgical studies of such reactions were largely limited to isobaric conditions at atmospheric pressure. The data so obtained, and theoretical deductions based on these data, were necessarily incomplete For the particular case of austenite decomposition, a knowledge of the phenomenology of the reaction in terms of all the state variables should lead to a clarification of the process. This deeper understanding should facilitate a decision between conflicting theories that have been proposed to rationalize these phe- nomena. An analysis, derived from an understanding of the transformation mechanisms, may aid in the optimization of alloy steel development. The first studies of the effect of pressure on transformations in steel were made by Kulin et al. in 1952.' In a study of the influence of applied stress on mar-tensite formation in a 30 pct Ni steel, they found that the martensite start (M,) was depressed 8°C per kbar* by hydrostatic pressure. Jellinghaus and Friedewold3 were apparently the first to investigate the effect of pressure on isothermal transformations above the Ms. They found that the bainite transformation rate in a 1.2 pct C, 3.8 pct Mn steel was reduced by a factor of 3 by a hydrostatic pressure of 4 kbar. In both of these investigations,2,3 the M, of the steels studied was below room temperature. Austenitizing and quenching were done at atmospheric pressure, followed by the decomposition of the metastable austenite under pressure. The maximum temperature at pressure in the bainite study3 was 350°C. Until the advent of the present high-pressure devices, it was not possible to conduct isobaric high-pressure heat treatments from austenitizing through isothermal decomposition and quenching. The exploitation of high pressure as a variable in metallurgical studies was greatly advanced by the apparatus and techniques developed by Hall4 and co-workers. Utilizing these techniques, Radcliffe et a1.5 and Hilliard6 etermined the pressure dependence of phase equilibria in the Fe-C system. Hilliard and cahn7 examined the pearlite transformation rate in an AISI 1080 steel and also in a high-purity 0.92 C Fe-C alloy at 1 atm and at 34 kbar and found a 700-fold reduction in rate at pressure in the 1080 steel but only a fivefold reduction in the high-purity alloy. A notable amount of fossil resin exists in many of the bituminous coal beds of Utah. The upper part of these show a marked concentration of resin, which occurs primarily in the fracture seams. In general, these seams are less than 1/8 in. thick, but it is not uncommon to find coal with areas as thick as 3/8 inches. The resin is of the hard kauri variety, with coloration varying from deep blood red to lemon yellow and almost colorless. There is also an almost black variety, which is not readily soluble in the same solvents as the lighter colored resins. These resins are valuable for many industrial purposes. When refined, they are suitable for uses similar to those for which lac resins are usually employed. They are particularly desirable for preparing dielectric varnishes. They are also desirable in preparing printing inks, waterproofing agents, special synthetic rubbers and rubber cements. They are especially suitable as an admixture in synthetic rubbers and cements, as they supply the essential tackiness the synthetics lack. The following chemical trade characteristics have been found by Inter-Chemical Co. research chemists in the refined resins: Specific gravity (melted)....... I .03 -I.06 Acid number.................. 6-8 Softening point, mercury method 160º-165ºC Iodine value (Wijs)............ 140-150 Refractive index............... 1.544 Color (Hellige, 25 pct toluol)... 14 Molecular weight, average...... 732 Purity, 99 + pct pure hydrocarbon "Unaffected by alkalies and resistant to one hour fusion with solid potassium hydroxide. The high- and low-cycle fatigue properties of the nickel-base superalloy, Mar-MBOO, in columnar-grained and single-crystal forms were determined at room temperature. It was found that the fatigue lives of these materials were greatly affected by the size of preexisting cracks in MC-type carbides contained in the micro structure. Most of the data falls on two curves given by: (zN)'/A€= K, where Nf is the number of cycles to failure, Af is the total strain range, and K is a function of carbide size. No difference was observed in the fatigue behavior of the columnar-grained and single-crystal materials for the same MC carbide size. Matrix slip and crack initiation occurred at precracked MC carbides and, to a lesser extent, at micropores. Fatigue crack propagation was mainly in the Stage I mode, i.e., on cry stallo graPhic slip planes. The Stage I fracture in these materials was unusual in that distinct features were observed on the fracture surfaces. In high-cycle fatigue, these features resembled those commonly observed on the cleavage fracture surfaces of bcc and hcp materials. Yet, in this study, the cracks propagated slowly in a cyclic manner. In low-cycle fatigue, the Stage I facets contained equiaxed dimples, similar to those observed on the tensile fracture surfaces of ductile materials. These observations indicate that both local normal and shear stresses are involved in these Stage I fractures. A model is proposed to explain these results based on the weakening of the cohesive energy of the active slip planes by reversed shear deformation and the fracture of the bonds across the weakened planes by the local normal stress. RECENT developments in casting technology have produced cast nickel-base superalloys in columnar -grained and single-crystal forms.1'2 The tensile and creep properties of the nickel-base superalloy, Mar-M200, cast in these forms have been shown to be superior to the corresponding properties of the conventionally cast polycrystalline material.lp2 This improvement in properties results, in part, from the elimination of grain boundaries in the single crystals and the alignment of the grain boundaries parallel to the stress axis in the columnar-grained castings. As part of a program to evaluate the fatigue properties of nickel-base superalloys cast in single-crystal and columnar-grained forms, a study has been made of the cyclic deformation and fracture of Mar-M2OO at room temperature. M. fiFl I .hininr Mpmher AIMF ic ^pninr Rocoarrh Accn^iata anH I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The composition range of Mar-Ma00 in weight percent is: 8 to 10 Cr, 9 to 11 Co, 11.5 to 13.5 W, 0.75 to 1.25 Cb, 1.75 to 2.25 Ti, 4.75 to 5.25 Al, 0.01 to 0.02 B, 0.03 to 0.08 Zr, 0.07 to 0.12 C, bal. Ni. All of the castings met the above specifications. The castings were solutionized for 1 to 4 hr at 2250°F followed by aging at 1600°F for 32 hr which resulted in a 0.2 pct offset yield stress of 150,000 psi at room temperature. The microstructure of the material consisted of cuboidal, coherent particles of ordered, fcc Ni3(A1,Ti) (commonly designated y'), approximately 0.3 p on edge, distributed in an fcc y solid-solution matrix. MC carbides together with shrinkage and gas micropores were also distributed throughout the materials. The MC carbides and micropores were located preferentially in the interdendritic interstices, as well as in the grain boundaries in the columnar-grained castings. The (100) direction of all the single crystals and the common (100) axis of the grains in the columnar materials were aligned within about 5 deg of the specimen axis. Fatigue testing was carried out in the high-cycle (HCF) and low-cycle (LCF) fatigue regions, with the major difference being gross yielding of the specimen occurred during the first cycle in the LCF region. This division also corresponded with the more usual one in which the life of a specimen in LCF is less than lo4 cycles and that in HCF is greater than lo4 cycles. The designs of the high-cycle fatigue and low-cycle fatigue specimens are shown in Figs. l(a) and (c), respectively. The gage sections of both HCF and LCF specimens were electropolished prior to testing. The HCF specimens were tested in an MTS, closed-loop, hydraulic fatigue machine at 10 cps in air. The specimens were cycled between a tensile stress of 5000 psi and a maximum tensile stress which ranged from 35,000 to 125,000 psi, Fig. l(b). The LCF specimens were cycled under strain control from zero to a maximum tensile strain, Fig. l(d), in a Wiedemann-Baldwin testing machine. The experimental procedure has been described elsewhere.3'4 Both HCF and LCF tests were interrupted periodically in order to replicate the development of slip and cracking at the specimen surface. This was accomplished by placing plastic replicating tape around the gage section of the specimen while the specimen was in the mahine. The size of the MC carbides for all specimens was measured on a polished longitudinal section through the gage section after fatigue testing. The method of measurement consisted of carefully scanning the entire polished section in order to locate the largest MC carbides. Pulses from large underground explosions which traverse the rock beyond the "fracture" and "plastic" zones do not behave as a spherical elastic model. Observed attenuation is greater than that predicted by the elastic wave equation, and the pulse form changes in a different manner, i.e., it usually lengthens with the first power of the distance. To more clearly define a mathematical real earth-wave model, detailed analyses of the spherical elastic and the Voigt viscoelastic models have been made, and results compared with observed wave forms from large confined chemical and nuclear explosions. TRANSIENT SPHERICAL ELASTIC WAVES Scope of Investigation Transient elastic spherical waves were investigated in detail. However, an elastic model is not, in general, an exact representation of wave propagation in rock. An understanding of transient elastic waves is desirable for gaining insight into explosive-generated wave phenomena because it can be employed for comparison of more complex and realistic models, such as the Voigt model, or others which may simulate real earth waves. The study was concentrated primarily on the peak values of the radial wave parameters : displacement, particle velocity, acceleration, stress, and strain.

I. Historical. Barite has been mined for many years in various parts of Virginia, probably the earliest mining-operations being in Prince William county, within 600 ft. of the Fauquier county line, about 4 miles south of east from Catlett, a station on the Southern Railway. It is claimed that the mineral was mined here as early as 1845. Mining-operations in Campbell and Pittsylvania counties in the Piedmont region, and near Marion in Smyth county, in the southwest Virginia Valley region, were begun about 30 years ago. The mining and milling of barite on a commercial scale in Tazewell and Russell counties are more recent, and commenced about 15 years ago. II. Geographical and Geological Distribution. Barite occurs in many counties in the State, as shown in Fig. 1, but the industry has been confined to only a few of them. Its occurrence is noted in two of the three major divisions of the State—namely, the Piedmont region east of the Blue Ridge, and the Paleozoic area west of the Blue Ridge. In the Piedmont region the mineral has been mined in the following counties: Bedford, Campbell, Louisa, Prince William, and Pittsylvania. In the region west of the Blue Ridge, composed of Paleozoic sediments, barite has been mined in Montgomery, Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell counties. Of the counties mentioned, Bedford, Campbell, and Pittsylvania of the Piedmont region, and Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell of the Valley region, have been the principal producers. In 1906, operations were confined to five counties—Bedford, Louisa, Pittsylvania, Russell, and Tazewell—but in the first two counties named there was no production, the work being solely development.

ABOUT three years ago a distinctive new type of crushing and grinding equipment, known as the Hadsel mill, was announced. A description appeared in the November, 1932, issue of this magazine. Any machine that would take run-of-mine ore and reduce it, in one operation, and at a reasonable cost, to a size suitable for metallurgical treatment was bound to attract much interest, as the original Hadsel mill did. The first commercial sizes were built with the drum supported by an overhung shaft and partly immersed in a tank. The drum carried inside and outside buckets to lift the ore, which was dropped as the drum revolved onto stationary breaker plates projecting into the drum from the opposite tank wall. The coarser material settled back into the inside buckets. Intermediate sizes were carried into the tank, and this material was scooped out by the outside buckets and deposited hack in the drum for further grinding. The fines were carried out of the mill with the wash water over an adjustable weir at one side of the tank.
