Over the past ten years a series of investigations have been conducted to determine some of the physical processes involved in breaking rock with confined concentrated charges. Detailed discussions of many of these investigations have been published elsewhere.1-6 Laboratory experiments made by other investigators using Hopkinson pressure-bar techniques have shown that solid materials are fractured in tension by the reflection of an incident compressive stress pulse at a free surface.7-12 In these tests a small charge of explosive is placed in contact with one end of a bar. Detonation produces some plastic flow and crushing of the bar near the charge and generates a compressive stress pulse that travels along the length of the bar. At the free end of the bar the compressive stress pulse is reflected back into the bar as a tensile stress pulse. If the tensile strength of the bar is exceeded during this reflection process, a tensile fracture normal to the length of the bar is produced, and the broken end of the bar moves forward with a constant velocity equal to the average particle velocity trapped in the broken fragment. The new surface formed by the fracture becomes the new free end of the bar that reflects the remaining portion of the incident compressive stress pulse. This process is repeated any number of times until all of the incident stress pulse is reflected.

THE value of carbon ratios in determining the boundaries of possible oil deposits appears to have passed the hypothetical stage. The theory that the ratio of fixed carbon in pure coals is an, invariable index of incipient metamorphism in both, surface and underground rocks and that it may be applied in defining the limits of petroleum, advanced by David White,1 has been received with keen interest by many petroleum geologists. Detailed isocarb maps have been prepared of the Pennsylvanian area of North Texas and Eastern Oklahoma by M. L. Fuller.2 A similar map of the coal-bearing area of West Virginia is given here. An isocarb3 is a line showing an equal fixed-carbon percentage, pure coal basis; the term has been proposed by David White to supersede a less expressive nomenclature. The term carbon ratio is applied to the percentage of carbon in pure coal after water and ash have been eliminated. As a comparatively small number of analyses have been made on this basis, it is usually necessary to compute the ratio by dividing the fixed carbon of the proximate analysis by the sum of the fixed carbon and volatile matter of the same analysis. Manganese oxide acitivities and sulfide capacities have been measured at 1650°C in mixtures of MnO + A1203 and MnO + SiO2 - Al2O3. Sulfide capacities have also been measured at 165O0C for melts of MnO + SiO2, MgO + SiO2, MgO + SiO2 + Al2O3, MgO + MnO + SiO2, and SiO2 + Al2O3 and for crystalline CaO. The activity coefficients of the sulfides of manganese and magnesium have been derived where possible. It looks as though the activity coefficients of sulfides are greatest at compositions where the free energies of formation of the silicate mixtures have their maximum negative values. The amphoteric nature of alumina is reflected in the results for the binaries and ternaries in which it is present with silica. The limiting solubility of CaS in CaO at 1650°C is 6.3 x 10-4 mole fraction. THE activities of manganese oxide have been measured in a variety of silicate and aluminate melts by use of the equilibrium (MnO)slag = [Mn]pt .½O2 [l] and the experimental techniques described previously.' Sulfide capacities (CS = wt pct S (PO2/PS2)½) have also been determined in a series of melts, by use of an established method2 which exploits the equilibrium (O°) + ½S2 = (S") . ½O2 [2] If CS and the activity of a metal oxide are known in a melt, the activity coefficient of the metal sulfide can be calculated by use of the equilibrium constant K, for the pure phase reaction MO i ½S2 = MS + ½O2 [3] The activity coefficient of the sulfide is then given by the equation

TRENCHING, sampling, and core drilling in Stillwater and Sweetgrass Counties, Mont., by the Bureau of Mines have delimited over 5,000,000 tons of chromite ore containing more than 20 per cent chromic oxide. The Benbow and Mouat-Sampson mines have been developed and are fully equipped for mining and milling 500 tons and 2000 tons a day, respectively.

(communication to the Secretary*) :-In connection with the comparison of mechanical crushing efficiencies in Tables I and II of Mr. Franke's paper, I wish to suggest a somewhat simpler way of making this' comparison, based upon what the writer has called the "crushing-surface diagram," as published by him in the Engineering and Mining Journal for May 24, 1913. Such a diagram, based on the data given in Table II, is submitted herewith, Fig. 1, cumulative percentages being plotted as abscissas and reciprocals of diameters (theoretical mesh per inch). plotted as ordinates.. Such a diagram averages the diameters without calculation, and areas upon it are proportional to surface produced, and, in accordance with Rittinger's law, to energy spent on crushing alone.

HAVING devoted considerable time to the investigation of the Clapp-Griffiths converter and the metal produced in it, it may perhaps be of interest to the Institute to learn the conclusions which I have formed. Of course, it is well known that the stationary converter of small size is the very oldest type of vessel used in the pneumatic process. Hence it will be only necessary to call your attention to the points which are special features of the Clapp-Griffiths. This converter has a slag tap-hole, situated at such a height in relation to the metal under treatment that, when the cinder is formed and boils up as the blow progresses, it can run off and thus be removed from contact with the iron, and will also be out of the way when the decarbonized metal is tapped into the casting ladle and the manganiferous alloy added. The manner of shutting off the blast, when the process is completed and the metal is being tapped, is another distinctive feature. The tuyeres are situated around the sides of the vessel, and enter the interior some little distance above the bottom; they are provided with plugs through the centers of which there are small openings. When the blow is completed, these plugs are forced forward into the outer orifices of the tuyeres, thus shutting off the blast, excepting the small quantity' entering through the passages named. While this is sufficient to keep the metal from running into the tuyeres, it reduces to the minimum the action of the blast while the metal is being tapped. Of course, this is of great importance, as in an ordinary stationary converter any delay in getting open the tap-hole means overblowing, and even while the first part of the charge is running out the oxidation is in frill force. The property of the Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Co., covering the Juneau gold belt for over a mile in length, consists of 136 claims and 24 mill sites; these are near Juneau, Alaska, in what is known as the Harris mining district. Gold was discovered in the district in 1880, by Richard T. Harris and Joseph Juneau, who had been prompted to explore the section by rumors they had heard among the Indians. Gold was first found on the beach at the mouth of Gold Creek and further search revealed the lode deposits in the Silver Bow basin, about two miles inland. The lode locations made immediately thereafter constitute the principal area of the Alaska Juneau group of claims. Gradually news of the strike spread and, during the late eighties, Silver Bow basin became a substantial producer of gold, both from placer work and from quartz milling. Numerous small mills of various types were erected to crush high-grade float and stringers gouged to shallow depths. Placer mining gradually ceased and the pioneer milling operations gave way to larger and better mills, which in time were the predecessors of the two large mills built by the Alaska Gastineau Co. and the Alaska Juneau Co. on the shores of Gastineau Channel. This evolution from arrastres to small mechanical mills, thence to the two large-capacity mills on Gastineau Channel, although a natural sequence of events, had a most important bearing on the development of the district. Knowledge of the character, extent, and value of the ore deposits gained by these early operations could not have been acquired otherwise. Spencer shows1 that the early mills were: Arrastres in 1881-82-83-84-85-86-88; a 5-stamp mill in 1882; a "newly devised grinding mill" in 1884; two Huntington mills in 1886; a 10-stamp mill in 1889; a revolving Dodge mill in 1890; a 5-stamp mill in 1891; and a 20-stamp mill in 1893. JOINT convention week has become a feature of the year with western mining men. The first was held at Denver in 1926, the second at Salt Lake City in 1927, and the third is about to take place at Los Angeles. Holding in the same city in one week the meetings of a number of related organizations has been .found to permit the development of a well-rounded program at the same time that it economizes time and money for the members, many of whom belong to several of the participating organizations. For the third time, the American Mining Congress, represented by its Western Division, of which Philip Wiseman is chairman, is taking the lead and assuming the main responsibility. The A.I.M.E. is furnishing the papers for two sessions and the California Development Association for one. The Southern California Section, Robert R. Boyd, chairman, is host for the Institute, but the Northern California, Nevada and Arizona sections have each contributed papers to the program, and will be represented at the meeting. It will be a real reunion of the mining men of the Southwest.

The tin deposit of Monserrat; Bolivia, consists of one major vein 1600 m in length. The ore is unusual because of the notable quantity of teallite, even though cassiterite is the principal tin mineral. The deposit, formed at shallow depth under a wide range in temperature, may be classed as xenothermal. Polished sections reveal a complex history of replacement, with low-temperature minerals deposited before high-temperature minerals.

Rock stresses and steady-state flow rates induced by the pressure gradient associated with the flow of formation fluid into a borehole have been analytically determined for a permeable, elastic material saturated with an incompressible fluid. In this analysis, the material properties and loading are considered to be symmetric about the axis of the borehole and independent of axial position. For Case I the material is assumed to have uniform permeability in the radial direction, whereas for Case 11 the permeability is assumed to have been reduced in a localized region adjacent to the hole by either normal well completion and production operations or deliberate plugging during air drilling. Results of a numerical example indicate that, in the absence of plugging, the rock shear strength must be approximately two-thirds the formation fluid pressure in order to prevent rock failure. The required rock strength is high for small radial zones of plugging and decreases as the region of reduced permeability becomes larger; however, a depth of plugging can be reached beyond which there is no real gain in strength, although the flow rate can be further reduced. INTRODUCTION During normal production of oil from a well, it is often desirable to increase the production rate of the formation fluid by increasing the pressure gradient through the formation adjacent to the borehole. Depending upon the magnitude of this pressure gradient and strength of the rock material, this production-rate increase can cause sloughing of the hole wall. In many cases, the production - rate increase can result in excessive sand production, increased wear of production equipment, lost production time and expensive workover jobs. In addition, the phenomenon of increased rock bit penetration rate with the use of a gaseous instead of a liquid drilling fluid has been observed in oilfield drilling operations and experimentally demonstrated by various investigators for several years. The improvement obtained by employing this technique can be quite significant and offers apromising method for reducing drilling costs. However, air drilling is currently limited to geographical locations where high-capacity water-bearing formations are not encountered. This limitation has prevented widespread adoption of air-drilling techniques, because the water influx into the borehole interferes with efficient removal of the drilling cuttings and usually results in a condition such that the bit becomes "balled-up" or stuck in the hole. In an attempt to remove the water - intrusion limitation from air drilling, various chemical and mechanical water shut-off methods have been proposed. Goodwin and Teplitzl suggested one such proposal whereby the permeability of the water-bearing rock structure was reduced in the vicinity of the borehole. Although the development of a shut-off method based upon this approach would certainly be welcomed by the oil industry, it is conceivable that, under certain conditions of the pressure gradient, strength of the rock material and depth of the modified permeability zone, a stress field can be created that will result in an unstable hole. As part of their study, an analytical solution is given for stresses in an idealized model of a hole and the surrounding rock material. The purpose of the present study is to extend the analysis of Goodwin and Teplitz to gain more insight into the details and consequences of excessive production rates and formation water shut-off. In particular, simplified models of these problems have been analytically examined, which makes possible the evaluation of the type of stress fields that can be anticipated as a result of these production and drilling practices. Both problems solved concern the determination of the steady-state volume flow rate of the formation fluid and the resulting steady-state stress and displacement distribution in a hollow, cylindrical configuration. The cylinder of Case I, corresponding to the production-rate problem, consists of a material with a constant permeability from the inside surface to the outside surface; the cylinder of Case 11, corresponding to the water shut-off problem, consists of a material with a constant permeability from the inside surface to an intermediate concentric cylindrical surface and a second constant permeability from the intermediate surface to the outside surface-

Automatic controls have long been a fact of technological life. Some understanding of control systems is rapidly becoming essential to the competence of mineral engineers. Students in undergraduate mineral engineering curricula, however, should not be expected to develop proficiency in the design and interpretation of control systems. They should be provided the opportunity to absorb some of the fundamental concepts and cant of such highly specialized peripheral fields as automatic controls. The present paper describes the components of a simple, flexible and relatively inexpensive control system designed primarily for the use of students in independent study projects. The control system is based on a continuous on-stream optical analyzer analogous to commercially available systems using X-Ray fluorescence analysis. The components can be easily adapted to control other separators and separations. As described here, they have been arranged to control the magnetic separation of a magnetite bearing specular hematite from quartz to produce a quartz product of fixed hematite content using a minimum of power. The control system consists of the magnetic separator* with a vibrating feeder, † a sampler, an optical scanner, a differential amplifier, a millivolt recorder ‡ and a motor driven, metered variable DC power supply for the separator electromagnet. An optional magnet current recorder is useful. The system as arranged for closed loop control is illustrated in Fig. 1. The elements of the loop are identified in automatic control jargon in Table I. The relative costs of heating a reservoir by steam injection and by combustion have been examined. The comparison was based on a model similar to that proposed by Chu.' The cost of boiler feed water, the price of fuel, pressure and plant capacity were parameters in determin-ing the costs of air compression and steam generation. The analyses compare the cost of heating to the same radius by the two methods. Results suggest that the two primary factors for comparison are the price of fuel and the amount of crude burned during underground combustion. The cost of fuel has a greater effect on the cost of heat from steam than it does on its cost by combustion. As a result, analyses indicate that when the price of fuel is low, steam may be unequivocally cheaper than air. The influence of heat loss is such, however, that as the heated radius increases combustion becomes relatively more competitive depending upon the amount of crude burned. This implies that steam may be cheaper for small stimulation jobs (huff and puff) but combustion may be more economically attractive for heating large areas (flooding). INTRODUCTION Use of thermal methods of recovery is an accepted fact today. After an induction period of several years, processes are being widely used that involve reservoir heating to augment recovery. Of the several techniques, steam injection and forward combustion appear to be destined to dominate the field. Although the objectives of both are the same, the basic differences between generating heat in situ and injecting heat after surface generation influence the cost in different ways. This study compares the cost of heating a reservoir either by steam injection or by forward combustion. There has been no consideration of recovery. Presumably, recovery from the swept region would be high in either case. The sole consideration was the cost of heating to the same radial distance by either process. PROCEDURE THE MODEL The basis for comparison was a mathematical model similar to that used by Chu' for combustion. The model simulates a radial heat wave in two-dimensional cylindricaI coordinates. It includes heat generation, conduction and convection within the reservoir and conduction in the bounding formations. Thus, heat losses from the formation are considered. Three significant modifications were made. 1. Equal logarithmic increments rather than equal increments were used for the mesh spacing in the r direction. By this technique large distances were simulated with relatively few mesh spaces. 2. A backward difference approximation to the convection term was used to avoid troublesome oscillations which result from a central difference approximation when the convection term is large. 3. The radial increments of the combustion zone motion were not necessarily uniquely related to the mesh configuration. The cumbersome step function introduced by the heat of vaporization of steam was circumvented by assuming the enthalpy of the steam to be a linear function of temperature between reservoir temperature and steam temperature. This is equivalent to assuming an average heat capacity numerically equal to the difference between the enthalpy of saturated steam and the enthalpy of water at reservoir temperature divided by the difference between the two temperatures. Heat losses obtained by this model are in essential agreement with those obtained by the analytical solution of Rubenshtein.' A detailed description of the model is presented in the Appendix. Using the model, the times required to heat to particular radial distances were obtained as a function of injection rate and other physical parameters. For the steam case, injected fluid was assumed to be saturated steam at pressures of either 500, 1,000 or 1,500 psia. The corresponding temperatures are 467, 544 and 596F, respectively. Thickness ranged from 10 to 50 ft and injection rate ranged from 100,000 to 1 million Ib/D. Reservoir and overburden temperatures at the injection well were assumed to be that of saturated steam at the injection pressure. The effect of maintaining the overburden temperature at the well at a different temperature (initial reservoir temperature) was examined with no significant change in behavior. The influence of wellbore heat losses for the steam case was determined in the following manner. The rates of heat loss as a function of time were estimated using an approach similar to that suggested by Ramey." he data were based on injection through 2%-in. tubing in 7-in. casing. Integration of these data over the entire iniection period yielded the total heat loss. Total heat losses were then corrected to their equivalents in steam (this number resulted from dividing the total heat loss by the latent heat). This was considered additional steam required to accomplish the reservoir heating and the total cost was increased accordingly.

A large-scale water-injection program for the Holt Bryant reservoir of the Delhi field has been established by means of the new automatic multi-pool analyzer. The objectives of this program were to increase reservoir pressure and eliminate a cross-dip gradient of 200 psi. Pressure increases during the first 15 months of operation have allowed for increased oil production rates of 2,600 BID or 25 per cent. To determine the required water injection it was necessary to predict natural water influx ram. Elimination of the pressure gradients required the water-injection program to account for the fluid migration and pressure interaction between segments of the reservoir. An integral part of the ana1ysis included the determination of in-place volumes of oil and gas. The operation of the automatic multi-pool analyzer in determining the water-injection program is described. New features of the analyzer inc1ude an automatic maferial balance analog and a leart-squares computer for determination of unknown reservoir properties. Operational procedures are sufficiently simple to allow direct use by reservoir engineers on a routine basis. The rapidity and accuracy with which problems may be solved permit repeated ana1yses as a check upon reservoir performance. INTRODUCTION This paper describes the use of a new analog com- puter in determining the optimum injection program for a complex reservoir. The Holt-Bryant (Fig. 1) is the major reservoir in the Delhi field of Louisiana. Production is from the Tuscaloosa at subsea depths of 2,970 to 3,286 ft. The sand dips to the south and southwest from three to five degrees. The reservoir is approximately 12 miles long and varies in width from 1/2 to 2 miles. Various calculations have placed the initial volume of oil in-place in the wide range of 275 to 355 million STB. Two small gas caps were initially present in the reservoir. The Holt-Bryant reservoir was discovered in Dec.. 1944, and was fully developed with 188 producing wells by 1948. After development was completed, an east-west pressure gradient began to establish itself. This

THE occurrence of outcrops of bituminous schists and sandstones impregnated with heavy asphaltic petroleum first directed attention to the Sao Pedro area as a possible source of commercial production of petroleum. Since 1920, more than 20 wells have been drilled in this area. The discovery of oil shows and small quantities of natural gas in some of the early wells led to the continuation of drilling in the hope that more important findings would result. During the early part of 1934, detailed magnetometer observations were made in this area, and a con-siderable number of torsion balance stations were occupied. The results of these geophysical observations help considerably to clarify the structure of the area and the very considerable amount of geologic information available makes possible a much more exact interpretation of geo-physical anomalies. In presenting the results of these observations, and interpretation of the geophysical data, certain actual case problems are included; i.e., geophysical anomalies due to anomalous masses of which the forms and positions are more or less known. Although anomalies due to igneous intrusions are probably more important to geophysicists in Brazil than in other countries, these data have a certain interest for all geophysicists, particularly because they were obtained in the south magnetic hemisphere, where the lines of magnetic force are directed upward, and in a region of moderately low inclination. This is considered as a geological-geophysical problem, and only passing mention will be given to the petroleum possibilities of the area.

EXPERIMENTAL work on the process was begun on a laboratory scale at Cleveland, Ohio, in 1914, and transferred to East St. Louis, Ill. in 1916, where a commercial sized furnace was in technical operation until January, 1918. The essential steps of the process are as follows: Oxidized zinc ore or roasted zinc concentrate is mixed with crushed coke and coal-tar pitch and formed into briquets 9.25 in. (23.5 cm.) in diameter and 21 in. (53 cm.) long in a manner similar to that used in the manufacture of graphite or carbon electrodes, except that much less care and time are required. The composition varies with the nature of the ore; in one case, the composition was 100 parts ore, 70 parts coke, and 18 to 20 parts pitch. These briquets maintain their form and volume during and after the distillation of the zinc. This object is gained by using coke as the matrix and coal-tar pitch as the binder; this pitch becomes coke on heating and unites the ore particle and the original coke particle into a continuous mass. The briquet is an electrical conductor but only to such, a degree that it can be used as a resistor. The size of the ore, as in the present practice of zinc metallurgy, ranges from fine material, such as flotation concentrate, to coarse table and fine jig concentrate. The process is not restricted to any particular kind of ore, but is applicable to pure high-grade ores, ores high in iron, and complex zinc lead ores, since the residue from the distillation is held immovably in place within the briquet. In the case of complex zinc-lead ores, the distillation is conducted with a carefully regulated temperature so that a high percentage of lead is retained in the distilled briquet, which may then be smelted for its lead content. In present zinc smelting practice, the reduction fuel is from 40 to 50 per cent. of the weight of the ore. In the briquet, it is from 60 to 85 per cent. of the ore; but unless the ore is exceptionally high in residue, the distilled briquet

The dislocation arrangements formed during unsteady propagation of cleavage fractures on (010) planes in LiF have been investigated by high-resolution etch-pit techniques and by X-ray diffraction topogvaphy. In impurity-hardened crystals, cracks propagating in any direction on (010) planes at velocities of about 103 cm per sec are usually accompanied by light plastic deformation which is enhanced wherever the crack is allowed to hesitate. Dislocations with [011] type Burger's vectors are often formed looped around the crack tip. They are dragged along with the crack tips leaving edge dislocations lying nearly parallel with the clearage surface about 5µ from it. These dislocations are easily overlooked since they may initially intersect with the cleavage surface infrequently and later may disappear from the crystals due to image forces during aging at room temperature. Although the plastic work associated with these dislocations is only comparable with the reversible (010) surface energy, an instability in crack propagation appears due to a limit of the velocity with which dislocations can be dragged along with the crack. Transition to a fully brittle nonplastic fracture mode occurs when the crack velocity exceeds the velocity with which dislocations can be moved by the stress field of the crack. TRANSITIONS between brittle and ductile modes of fracture appear to be common processes in the behavior of materials in which the flow stress is close to the stress at which brittle cracks can propagate. High-strength engineering alloys fit into this category and the transition from ductile to brittle modes of crack propagation may be associated with catastrophic failures in these important materials. The methods of theoretical mechanics indicate the geometrical conditions in which these processes may occur but the detailed mechanisms controlling the generation of dislocations in the initiation of the plastic mode and the process by which the loss of plasticity occurs on transition to the brittle mode are not yet clear. Since these mechanisms are not amenable to direct observation in engineering alloys we have chosen a semi-ductile alkali halide LiF as a model system in which to observe transition mechanisms between plastic and brittle modes of crack propagation. Cleavage cracks in this system are known to undergo a plastic-elastic transition at velocities between 103 to 104 cm per secl and dislocation configurations in LiF are amenable to study by optical-microscopic observation of dislocation etch pits2 and by X-ray diffraction topography.3 We have been able to identify a dislocation mechanism responsible for the transition from brittle to slightly plastic modes of crack propagation in LiF. A model based on this mechanism permits calculation of the critical crack-propagation velocity for this transition and indicates the importance of the stress dependence of dislocation velocity in determining the critical crack velocity. Of course, this model cannot be carried directly over to more complex materials but it is quite possible that its qualitative features are generally applicable. Dislocations intersecting fresh cleavage surfaces in LiF were reported by Gilman,4 by Forty,5 and by Wash-burn et a1.6 Such dislocations were construed to have been nucleated where the cleavage crack hesitated or stopped, near stress concentrators, such as cleavage steps, on the crystal face. The development and use of short-lived radioactive tracer methods for the onstream determination of residence time distributions in large-scale ball mills is described. Tests are reported on a pilot-plant ball mill with 0.43 m diameter and 0.86 m length and on an industrial mill with 1.83 m diameter and 2.74 m length. Tests with different tracer feed sizes indicate that the residence time distributions on both mills are independent of charge particle size. Similar tests are planned for a large ball mill of 4.57 m diameter and 9.30 m length. No safety problems were encountered in these tests and none are anticipated in tests of the larger mill.

(communication to the Secretary*) :—Mr. Brown's paper on the complicated groups of veins exposed in the workings of the Bodie mine forme a valuable contribution to the literature of the structural features of ore-depoeits. It is much to be desired that managers should put into print the results of their observations of the mines under their charge. These observations, as well as data of production, kind of ores, etc., usually accumulate for years, and unless the mining geologists of the Geological Survey happen along before the mine is worked out, such data seldom get into print. About the year 1899 I went through the mines at Bodie with R. C. Turner, then superintendent, and made some notes on the veins and gangue-minerals, and collected some specimens. ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass.-The Bureau of Standards has once more rendered a public service. Manufacturers and consumers of steel rails alike should welcome the important results now laid before them by Dr. Burgess and his co-workers. Personally I welcome these results all the more that in the past, as some of the members may remember, I have never failed, when occasion arose, to call the attention of rail manufacturers to the importance of controlling the finishing temperature of their rails. The pioneer metallographic work conducted at the South Works of the Illinois Steel Co. in the early '90s clearly brought out the close relations existing between the manufacture, properties, and finishing temperature of steel rails and I think I may say without fear of being contradicted that the results of this early investigation had considerable influence in drawing the attention of manufacturers to the importance of finishing temperature and of heat treatment in general. The results now before us should be, it seems to me, of great value to rail manufacturers in their efforts to produce a better and, above all, a safer rail. It seems to be demonstrated in this paper that there is no difficulty in installing in rail mills pyrometric outfits, making it possible to record, without interfering in the mill operations, the temperature of the rails as they leave the finishing rolls, or of the ingots as they are withdrawn from the soaking pits, or at any intermediate point in the process of manufacture. The inference necessarily follows that manufacturers should see to it that such pyrometric installations are made, in order that they may actually know, instead of guessing at, the temperature of their rails;, and, for obvious reasons, rail consumers should insist upon such installations. In the rolling of heavy sections especially should care be taken to lower their finishing temperature, seeing that the present tendency is to finish them at higher temperature, whereas, owing to the slower cooling of their central portions, which makes for coarseness of grain, they should, if anything, be finished at a lower temperature than lighter rails.
