The engineer has often to penetrate difficult or unknown regions. Mineral, irrigation, boundary and railway problems frequently necessitate journeys through, or long residence in, localities whence sustenance cannot be drawn. The selection and conveyance of provisions, outfit and implements thus become a matter of the first importance. Scientific skill, even of the highest order, is powerless unless supported by the proper appliances and foods. The advance of civilization favors the engineer, in that it is constantly enlarging his facilities and thus reducing his difficulties. Notwithstanding this fact, many are yet brought face to face with the problems considered in this paper. Distinction must be made between parties which are to be in constant or even occasional touch with a base of supplies, and those which will be for a long time dependent on their original outfit. Again, the requirements of a party on the march are different from those of a fixed camp. The district, season, cliinate, size and personnel of party also influence the character of the outfit. A party that is to be detached from its base of supplies for some time requires a greater variety of food than if it is to be gone for a short time. Much less in proportion need be taken where the journey is not long, so that privation is confined to a limited period. The ability to establish a fixed camp permits a larger outfit than would be possible if the camp mere to be moved from day to day. Transportation, climatic and other conditions are thus so varied that lists prepared for one work could hardly be applied to any other without some modification. Lists that have proved successful in some instances may, however, serve as bases to be added to, or otherwise altered, for the case in hand. The mistake usually made is in providing too large an outfit. Every emergency cannot be provided for; so that it is well to take, not what may be needed, but what cannot be spared.

Phelps Dodge's 60,000 tpd Morenci Concentrator has been in operation since 1942. The integrating of process control applications into the concentrator began in 1972. A process control system is presently on-line controlling 30 primary grinding circuits and all reagent additions. The system consists of a centralized control room process control Computer, on-stream X-ray analyzer, on-stream particle size analyzers and an operator interface. This paper describes the process control system's development, control concepts and its influence on the concentrator performance.

The history of Niagara Falls, as currently told, is simple, and by that very simplicity it has been rendered plausible. AS the story runs, the Falls were once situated at Lewiston, 7 miles to the north of their present site; and, since all the rocks in this section are alternate hard and soft strata, the waters acting readily upon the soft shales caused their removal, and the overlying hard lagers, deprived of support, broke down under the weight of the large volume of water that rushed over them; and this erosive action has sent the edge of the fall more and more southward, until it now has excavated the seven-mile gorge between Lewiston and the village of Niagara Falls. (See Fig. 1.) As early as 1790" we find this theory advanced in a description of this region; and it has been practically endorsed by subsequent observers, the most prominent of whom was Prof. James Hall, the State Geologist of New York, who surveyed the Falls in 1841, and gave the most exact description of their surroundings in the publications of the State Survey.? Not until 1883 was the correctness of the accepted theory of the Falls questioned.‡ The geology of the basins of the Great. Lakes, as elucidated by Newberry,§ Speneer,ll and others, has added largely to a clearer understanding of the life-history of the Falls. The investigators have shown us that Lake Erie, as a lake, is, geologically speaking, quite young; that its valley was excavated in pre-glacial times by a series of rivers; and that the Maumee, Sandusky, Cuyaboga, Alleghany and other rivers carried the drainage of the surrounding

Several of the decomposition processes that can occur in supersaturated phases in a Ti:11.6 wt pct Mo and a Ti:20 wt pct V alloy have been studied by transmission electron microscopy. The deformation induced "marternsitic phase" in the Ti:Mo alloy has been found to have a bcc or bct structure rather than the previously reported hexagonal structure. The morphology of&apos; the transformed region is a rather complex asserrlblage of twins, twinning occurring in one or more systems; this internal twinning has been found to occur on (112). The w phase is formed in both alloys on aging and is present in the Ti:Mo alloy after quenching. The structure of this phase has been confirmed as hexagonal in both systems, however, differences in morphology and stability are found between the two alloys. Thus in the Ti-Mo alloy the w phase has an ellipsoidal morphology with the major axis lying parallel to <111>ß or [0001]w while in the Ti-V alloy the phase forms as cubes, the cube faces lying parallel to {100}ß or {2021}w Some observations on the particle sizes, volume fraction, and composition of the w phase in the Ti-Mo alloy are listed. The mode of formation of The a phase from the (ß + w) structures is also different in the two alloys. In the Ti-Mo alloy the a phase is formed by either a cellular reaction or by the growth of isolated needles, whereas in the Ti-V alloy the a phase is nucleated at an w:ß interface and grow to consume the w phase. Some of the difjerences in behavior of the w phase are attributed to the mismatch between it and the solute enriched ß matrix in which it forms. MaNY transition elements tend to stabilize the bcc or ß-phase when added to titanium. In general two types of phase diagrams are produced, either a ß-stabilized (ß-isomorphous) system, e.g., Ti:Mo, -Ti:V, Ti:Nb, or a ß-eutectoid system, e.g., Ti:Cr, Ti:Fe, Ti:Mn. In previous papers&apos;-4 the phase transformations in the a-phase and (a + ß)-phase alloys have been described and this work has been extended to ß-stabilized systems. Specifically, transformations in the alloys Ti:20 wt pct V and Ti:11.6 wt pct Mo have been studied; in both of these alloys the ß phase is retained at room temperature when quenched from the ß-phase field. A number of phase transformations can occur in such metastable ß phases and the two alloys were chosen to include most of the transformations reported for ß-stabilized systems. We list these possible phase transformations below. Ti:11.6 Mo quenched from >780°C to retain the ß phase: a) The w phase can form on quenching.5 b) Martensite can be produced by subzero cooling or deformation. Two martensite habit planes have been reported in Ti:Mo alloys; (334)ß and (344)ß=6 c) On aging at temperatures <-550° C the w phase is formed before the a-phase.5,7 d) On aging at temperatures >550°C the a phase is formed.7 e) The martensite can be tempered. It has been reported that the a phase rather than the ß phase is precipitated during tempering.&apos; Ti:20V quenched from >660°C to retain the ß phase:9 a) At aging temperatures <260°C separation into two bcc phases occurs. b) The w-phase is produced prior to the a phase on aging at temperatures <-400°C. c) At temperatures 2400°C the a phase is formed directly. T-T-T diagrams describing the temperature and time regimes for the formation of these phases have been published7,9 for a Ti:12 pct Mo and a Ti:20 pct V alloy. We have attempted to investigate these transformations using transmission electron microscopy, however thin foils undergo a spontaneous transformation in all conditions except the equilibrium (a + ß) structure. This transformation has been reported previ0usly10,11 and we will comment on its morphology and nature in the various sections of experimental results. EXPERIMENTAL The compositions in wt pct of the two alloys investigated were: Ti:11.6 Mo, 0.100 02, 0.006 N2, 0.0015 H2 Ti:20V, 0.0574 O2, 0.0111 N2, 0.005 H2 These alloys were cold-rolled to 0.020 in. thick sheet. Specimens were heat treated in vacuum or in inert gas at temperatures >500°C and in a circulating air furnace at temperatures <500°C. Thin foils were prepared using standard techniques, described in detail previously." Dark field micrographs were obtained using high resolution technique. RESULTS Martensitic Transformation in Ti:11.6 pct Mo. Detailed study of the deformation induced martensite is not possible due to a spontaneous transformation which occurs near the edge of thin foils as shown in Fig. 1. Similar transformations have been observed in iron-" and copper-base13 alloys as well as other titanium alloys, but some observations specific to the Ti:1l.6 Mo alloy are listed below. a) The boundaries of these transformed regions are glissile and move under the influence of the electron beam during examination. b) Selected area diffraction indicates the transformed regions have the same structure as the matrix, being separated by tilt boundaries. In a recent note Sully and Head1 showed that the Cr-Fe sigma phase is isomorplious with the Cr-Co gamma phase, and that the lattice constants are also nearly identical. In a preliminary investigation of the ternary Cr-Co-Fe system at 800°C at this laboratory the above findings were confirmed, and it was found by microscopic techniques, using various etching reagents, that the two binary phases form an urinterrupted series of solid solutions with each other. These solid solutions occupy a straight narrow band which cuts across the 800°C isothermal section of the ternary system, connecting the two binary phases. A detailed investigation of the Cr-Co-Ni ternary system at 1200°C disclosed that here, too, the Cr-Co gamma phase extends deep into the ternary system in the form of a long narrow lip. The fact that this sigma type lattice is sustained even when well over half of the Co atoms in it are replaced by Ni atoms, with relatively little change in the Cr content, clearly indicates that Ni itself has a certain tendency to form the sigma phase with chromium. This tendency is hidden in the binary Cr-Ni alloys, where the sigma phase is not known to occur, but it becomes operative in the presence of a suficient amount of Co. The interpretation of these facts in terms of electron concentrations is rendered difficult by the uncertainty of our present knowledge of the valency electron structure of the transition elements in their alloys. However, Sully and Heal&apos;s results and the present work suggest that intermetallic phases with signla type lattice may occur more frequently in these little investigated alloys than heretofore suspected. In particular, it is expected that a similar phase may exist in the V-Co and perhaps in the V-Ni system, in analogy to the known sigma type phase in the V-Fe system, and that all these sigma type phases may form extensive solid solutions with one another.

THE area in which spodumene-bearing pegmatites occur extends from Gaffney, S. C., in a northerly direction to Lincolnton, N. C., a distance of about 16 miles. The zone averages 2 miles in width. Interest in this area was first aroused by the discovery of small amounts of cassiterite in the peg-matites and in greissen which occurs on the walls of some of the pegmatites. Attempts were made from 1880 into the 1920&apos;s to mine and concentrate cas-siterite, but there were no successful operations. In 1935 L. M. Williams became interested in the area and began prospecting by trenching and sinking several small shafts. He gradually gained control of a considerable acreage south of the city of Kings Mountain, N. C. Mr. Williams states that he produced some ore from a shaft which he shipped to the Maywood Chemical Co. in the late 1930&apos;s. In 1937 G. H. Chambers of the Foote Mineral Co. visited the area and examined several properties, but the lithium market was too small to support the necessary concentrating plant. Early in World War II the Solvay Process Co., encouraged by various federal agencies, acquired the Williams properties and leases and started a drilling program to develop reserves for spodumene mining. A study of this area was also made under T. L. Kesler by the U. S. Department of the Interior Geological Survey. Starting in 1942 a concentrating plant, water supply dams, and shops and other buildings were constructed. The Superior Stone Co., a neighboring crushed stone operator, was awarded a contract to mine and crush the pegmatite ore. Late in 1943 the plant started operations, which were continued until February 1946. A drop in demand for lithium chemicals forced it to close and remain closed for several years. In 1948 the Foote Mineral Co. became interested in assuring itself a source of lithium ore on the North American continent, to be used in the production of lithium ore chemicals, and inspected properties in Canada, South Dakota, and North Carolina. The North Carolina deposits were the most promising. In the fall of 1950 the company leased the Solvay interests with option to buy and acquired additional properties. Renovation of the mill and preparation of the quarry for mining was begun in earnest in January 1951. A new crushing plant was built and construction started in July 1951. The flotation process used was developed in the North Carolina State Minerals Research Laboratory located at Asheville, N. C. Foote is now in the process of expanding its production. The crushing plant is being revamped and much of the old milling equipment purchased from Solvay will be replaced by new. Mining equipment of suitable capacity has been received and is in use. The frontispiece is a general view of the mill. The orebodies consist of pegmatite dikes composed of fine-grained albite and quartz, with varying amounts of mica and spodumene. The latter may amount to as much as 50 pct of the rock, but the overall average is about 15 to 20 pct. Tin, columbite-tantalite, beryl, and other valuable minerals are present in varying small amounts. These dikes, which intruded into the Roan Gneiss underlying most of the Piedmont area, strike approximately N 30 E and dip about 85" to the west. The gneiss has the same strike but dips about 70" west. The dikes lie in a belt extending from Lin-colnton, N. C., to Gaffney, S. C., and passing through

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the usefulness of systematic analyses of weakness patterns. The term weakness here includes structural features such as fractures, foliation planes, lineaments and bedding. Many of these features are mapped by geologists in the field, but analysis of the field date is frequently overlooked. Examples are presented to show the value of such studies in petroleum and mineral exploration, in dam site selection, and in regional tectonic interpretations. Numerous theories have been presented to account for the mechanics and time of origin of fracturing. This is an extensive subject and cannot be reviewed in detail here. The reader may wish to refer to other papers.*"5 It is sufficient to say that most fracture patterns can be related to one or more of the following force mechanisms: compression, tension, torsion and fatigue (inheritance by upward propagation of pre-existing fractures). Fractures generally occur in sets in a district. The angular relationships and other characteristics of the individual sets frequently help in determining the force mechanism and movement history of the deformation. From a geometric point of view fractures are commonly referred to as longitudinal, cross, or diagonal (shear), depending upon their orientation relative to other major structural features such as anticlinal axes and so forth. These terms will be used from time to time and are illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. FIELD PROCEDURE AND TREATMENT OF DATA In fracture studies it is very important to collect adequate field data. Fig. 2 illustrates a notebook sheet for recording significant field observations in sedimentary rocks. Slight adaptations have to be made for igneous and metamorphic terrains. Fracture density and persistence are very important factors in petroleum exploration for fractured reservoirs and mineral exploration. E UGAR RICKARD comes of a long line of mining men and was born at Pontgibaud, France, in 1874, where his father was then in the course of his professional work. Later his father came to California and was until his death prominently connected with milling in that state and Nevada. Edgar Rickard grew up at Berkeley, attended the University of California, graduated in 1895 from the mechanical engineering course, and remained a year longer for post-graduate work in the College of Mining. His first job was as assarer for the Mountain Copper Co., Keswick, Cal., in 1896. The following year he was assayer and surveyor for the Cornucopia Mines, Oregon. In 1898, he joined the staff of the Venture Corporation, London, and for two years made examinations for them in various parts of the world. He served as mine manager at Cripple Creek and at the Briseis tin mine, in Tasmania. From 1901 to 1905, he was general manager of the Progress Mining Co. in Lower California, but when his cousin, T. A. Rickard, bought the Mining and Scientific Press he was persuaded to come to San Francisco as business manager of that periodical. A few years later the two cousins went to London and started the Mining Magewine there as a joint venture, Edgar being the business manager. In 1915, he took over control, T. A. Rickard returning to California to devote his time to the Mining u.rbd Scientific Press. In 1917 Edgar Rickard sold out to his British associates and came home to serve in the Food Administration through the war. Rickard was one of the first of the American engineers called to his staff when Herbert Hoover began his relief work by helping stranded Americans home at the be- ginning of the war and he has been with him constantly since in the Commission for Relief in Belgium, the

This method pertains to the field of determinative mineralogy, which it provides with tools for: (1) phase identification, (2) solid solution analysis. THE main orebody in the Hecla mine, Burke, Ida- ho, occurs along a nearly vertical shear zone in the Burke quartzite, with a substantial gouge and lamprophyre dike occurring in an irregular manner throughout the lode. The veins range from 3 to 40 ft. wide and dip from 70 deg. to 90 deg. There is 110 definite line of demarcation between the lode and the wall rock. Stringers of ore are often found in the wall rock for irregular distances. Horizontal but irregular quartz stringers are also found running into the walls and positions of the wall have a tendency to break to the quartz stringers and the accompanying gouge, which causes indefinite, uneven and extremely heavy side and top pressures.

Herty, Jr.,* Pittsburgh, Pa.—The procedure of the Open-hearth Committee in studying pig iron and its effects in the open hearth has been influenced by the discussions at a number of meetings of the Committee. Those discussions have brought out very clearly that, as far as the pig iron affects the quality, interference with quality should be studied for three definite types of pig iron: (1) low-silicon pig iron; (2) very high-silicon pig iron, and (3) pig iron in which the silicon varies over a wide range in short periods, such as 1 to 3 casts. If a blast furnace is running steadily at 1 per cent. silicon iron, practically no trouble, apparently, can be traced to the pig iron, but if the furnace is running from 0.60 up to 1.50 and then down to 0.60 per cent., trouble in the finished steel is liable to occur, which apparently cannot be corrected by open-hearth practice. The open-hearth discussions have shown fairly definitely that with low-silicon iron, one type of trouble arises on the finished product and with the high-silicon iron, another. Our experience with the high-silicon is that any non-metallic matter that may form, does so when the pig iron is put into the furnace; that is, silicates immediately form which are more liable to be high in silica than would happen with low-silicon iron. I think Mr. Sweetser will agree with mc that if a blast furnace is very irregular, different points in the furnace may be working irregularly, in other words, the temperature gradient all over the furnace is not uniform. We have made many determinations on that point which indicate that a varying blast furnace causes hot spots and cold spots around the periphery. If some of those spots are hot and others are cold, although the analysis of the iron may be constant, then unreduced oxide, going through on one side, and good iron, going through on the other, may mix and the average temperature of the iron is not high enough to get completely rid of the oxides. So our method of attack is directly on that point; it is our first objective. Our procedure is to make a number of consecutive tests at a blast furnace, making a detailed study of the blast-furnace operation. We follow the iron through the open-hearth heat, being sure that we know just how much of each kind of iron gets into the open hearth, and take out specified samples at certain times during the process, working on steel where no finishing additions are made in the furnace. We are following one type of iron through the billet mills and into the finished product and are obtaining complete data on open-hearth operation. Besides the ordinary chemical analyses on the samples of slag and metal, we are running samples of the plg iron, the steel in the open hearth and the finished steel, for oxygen and silicates. We are going to find out whether or not oxygen, as silicates or oxides, has some connection with this trouble. If not, we may be able to locate some other factor. I am inclined to think that the silicates are responsible, judging from the indications in some other work that the Bureau of Mines is doing in Pittsburgh. We have laid out a very definite method of testing to which we will adhere at the different plants where we are now working and at others in the future. Our aim is to

R. R. Knobler and F. E. Albertson—Following the testwork done by Thunaes and Spedden, a Sullivan deck plant was built for the Colquiri mill. This plant started to operate in April 1945 and continues in successful operation. Since May 1950 the Colquiri mill has operated with a completely revamped flowsheet at a rate of 1000 tons per day. The old Sullivan deck section was retained with this new flowsheet. The "slime plant" in Colquiri consists of one 12-cell Denver No. 18-Sp. Sub-A flotation machine, one 16-ft and one 12-ft hydroseparator, six five-deck Sullivan-frames and six shaking tables for cleaning up the Sullivan deck concentrates, as well as 12 Deister plus three Plat-O tables on which the fine sands, which are not treated on the S-decks, are concentrated. Only —325-mesh fines are treated on the Sullivan decks. The combined hydroseparator overflows are fed to the S-decks. From 1946 to 1949, i.e. with the "old" flowsheet and an average mill feed of 800 tons per day an average of 45 tons per day was treated on four Sullivan rougher frames. The two additional frames were used as cleaners. At times, up to 90 and 120 tons of slimes were treated successfully on this Sullivan deck installation. The average operating data for the S-deck section in Colquiri for the year 1949 were as follows: The tests reported in this paper indicated a tin recovery of 42 pct. The actual plant results for 1949 show a 54 pct tin recovery from the Sullivan decks. The total average quantity of tin produced from the S-deck section in 1949 was 15 tons of tin per month. This corresponds to 3 pct of the total mill recovery. R. R. Knobler and F. E. Albertson—Following the testwork done by Thunaes and Spedden, a Sullivan deck plant was built for the Colquiri mill. This plant started to operate in April 1945 and continues in successful operation. Since May 1950 the Colquiri mill has operated with a completely revamped flowsheet at a rate of 1000 tons per day. The old Sullivan deck section was retained with this new flowsheet. The "slime plant" in Colquiri consists of one 12-cell Denver No. 18-Sp. Sub-A flotation machine, one 16-ft and one 12-ft hydroseparator, six five-deck Sullivan-frames and six shaking tables for cleaning up the Sullivan deck concentrates, as well as 12 Deister plus three Plat-O tables on which the fine sands, which are not treated on the S-decks, are concentrated. Only —325-mesh fines are treated on the Sullivan decks. The combined hydroseparator overflows are fed to the S-decks. From 1946 to 1949, i.e. with the "old" flowsheet and an average mill feed of 800 tons per day an average of 45 tons per day was treated on four Sullivan rougher frames. The two additional frames were used as cleaners. At times, up to 90 and 120 tons of slimes were treated successfully on this Sullivan deck installation. The average operating data for the S-deck section in Colquiri for the year 1949 were as follows: The tests reported in this paper indicated a tin recovery of 42 pct. The actual plant results for 1949 show a 54 pct tin recovery from the Sullivan decks. The total average quantity of tin produced from the S-deck section in 1949 was 15 tons of tin per month. This corresponds to 3 pct of the total mill recovery. The history of this refinery has been one of expansion. It now has the capacity to produce 240,000 tons of cathodes annually. A general flowsheet and descriptions of the plant layout, operations involved, and equipment used at one of the world&apos;s largest and most modern electrolytic copper refineries are presented. THE El Paso copper refinery of Phelps Dodge Refining Corp. was originally constructed by the Nichols Copper Co., in association with Phelps Dodge Corp. and the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co., in order to refine anode copper produced at the smelters of the two latter companies. Initial production was obtained from the plant in January 1930 and its annual refining capacity was 100,000 tons of anodes. In order to keep pace with Phelps Dodge Corp.&apos;s increasing copper production in the Southwest, it became necessary in 1937 to increase the El Paso plant&apos;s refining capacity to 160,000 tons of cathodes annually. This was accomplished by adding two sections to the electrolytic tank house, increasing the number of anodes placed in each commercial electrolytic tank from 33 to 37, and making changes in the dc circuits which made it possible to put three generators on each of the two circuits instead of two, thus increasing the amperage on each circuit from 10,000 to 14,800 amp. The capacity of the two furnaces from which refined shapes were cast was increased by raising the sidedoor bays on the furnaces 6 in. An increase of 70 pct in the productive capacity of Phelps Dodge Corp.s Morenci Branch in 1942 again made it necessary to expand refining capacity. In order to accomplish this, Defense Plant Corp. set up a project to increase the capacity of the El Paso plant to 240,000 tons of cathodes annually. This project consisted of enlarging the tank house approximately 50 pct, the construction of another wire- bar furnace, and corresponding increases in other departments where necessary. The engineering work on this expansion was begun in March 1942. Actual construction was under way by August 1942, and the work was completed by March 1944. These additional facilities were purchased from Defense Plant Corp. by Phelps Dodge Refining Corp. in August 1949. The plant is in El Paso about eight miies east of the center of the city and near Highway 80 and the main lines of the Southern Pacific and Texas & New Orleans railroads. The plant site covers approximately 494 acres of company-owned land that is ideally adapted for its use, being well-drained sandy soil and having enough slope so that a minimum amount of excavation was required when the plant was constructed. There is still ample room on the plant site for any future plant expansion. The plant is constructed on four different ground levels and so arranged that the unrefined copper is unloaded on the highest level at the north side of the plant and the refined copper is shipped out from the lowest level on the south side of the plant. The receiving or unloading platform, weighing and sampling rooms, main floor of the tank house, acid and condensate storage tanks, and the slimes and copper sulphate plants are on the first or highest level. The tank house basement, yard scales, charging and furnace bays, balloon flue and stack, brick-storage building, substation and power house, boiler feedwater treating plant and pump house, water storage tanks, and change houses are on the second level. This second level also contains ample yard area for setting-up furnace charges, and for storage of custom scrap, cathodes, scrap anodes, blister, coke, and poles. THE results are presented of an investigation to discover the fundamental atomic conditions existing in Corson&apos;s high-copper alloys hardenable by means of silicide solution and reprecipitation. The study attracted the writer because it offered a very convenient example of the general type of hardenable alloys exemplified by duralumin. Sykes&apos; iron-tungsten and iron-molybdenum alloys and the hardenable lead-antimony. SUMMARY OF RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS In brief, the investigation shows that very perfect crystallinity exists in the solid solutions prepared at high temperature to contain as much dissolved silicide as possible. The lattice parameter of copper is altered very little by the amount of cobalt, nickel or chromium, and silicon dissolved. The hardening by drawing at a temperature to initiate precipitation of excess silicon and metal produces a remarkable change in the atomistics of the solid solution. The old perfection of crystallinity in the solid solution is destroyed and the new atomic spacings are of variable magnitude even in one grain, and a condition in a measure resembling that found in martensite is observed. Were no particles whatever precipitated by the drawing action, still ample causes for hardness would be in evidence in the solid solution alone. The lack of plane continuity in the crystal grains would oppose slip in a very effective manner. Complete annealing restores the crystalline perfection in large measure. In these alloys even the most sensitive methods failed to reveal the characteristic pattern of the silicide precipitated by the anneal, but this was largely to be expected as the amount is relatively small.
