An apparatus has been developed in which metals can bc solidified under closely controlled unidirectional heat flow conditions. The metals are cooled by a multiple-air jet system, designed so that the heat transfer coefficient is uniformly distributed over the cooled surface. They are contained in a special furnace system of low thermal mass which enables unidirectional heat flow conditions to be rigorously maintained for certain specific cooling rates. This apparatus has been used to study the solidijication of pure lead and pure tin at zero superheat, solid metal thicknesses being determined by thermal analysis, and by dipstick readings. Detailed thermal balances have been drawn up on the experiments in order to determzne the cooling conditions that most rigorously correspond to unidirectional heat flow. Solid metal thicknesses, measured experimentally for these conditions, have beetz shown to agree closely with the theoretical wedictzons of different integml-profile methods. lt is concluded that any errors inherent in the integval-profile method are no greater than the errors inherent in experimental investigations of solidification. A knowledge of the influence of heat transfer rates on the solidification of metals is essential to the understanding and control of industrial casting processes. Since very few formal methods are available for solving the heat conduction equation under solidification conditions several authors have developed approximate techniques for doing so. One of the most promising is the integral-profile technique that has been used by Goodman,1 Hills,2,3 Tien4 and Hills and ~oore' to predict solidification rates under certain specific heat transfer coniditions. In the first of this present series of papers6 Hills has further generalized the method and developed a universal integral-profile technique that can be used to predict solidification rates under a wide variety of unidirectional heat flow conditions. Since the method is approximate it is necessary to investigate the accuracy with which it predicts actual solidification rates. A review of the literature7 shows that solidification rates have seldom been measured under accurately known heat transfer conditions and it was therefore decided to develop experimental techniques that would enable this to be done. Results obtained would then be available as a check on the approximate solutions already developed, and in the development of further solutions that would be applicable under more complicated conditions. The initial work in this experimental program which is described here, is concerned with the solidification of pure metals at zero superheat under unidirectional heat flow conditions. Subsequent experiments have been concerned with the solidification of pure metals at appreciable superheats, under varying unidirectional heat flow conditions and under two dimensional heat flow conditions. In a series of experiments recently initiated, the solidification of binary alloys is also being investigated. The results of these subsequent experiments, together with relevant theory, will be described in later papers. The solidifying metal has been cooled in all the experiments, by a multiple air jet system designed so that the heat transfer coefficient to the cooled surface is constant and is uniformly distributed over the surface. This type of system has been chosen since only one parameter is needed to specify the heat transfer conditions and since these conditions are analogous to those met in certain continuous casting processes.' Air cooling was chosen in preference to water cooling, however, since it offers a wider range of heat transfer conditions, and since it can be investigated by analogous mass transfer techniques. The first part of this paper discusses the existing integral-profile solutions that correspond to the heat transfer conditions used in the experiments, and describes the development and use of the experimental apparatus. In subsequent sections the heat transfer and solidification results are presented, and the various theoretical predictions are compared with them, and with one another.

WHILE engaged, in the year 1856, in determining the oil-bearing properties of some bituminous coals from Western Kentucky, by subjecting them to dry distillation in an iron retort, which held about a pint, and to the neck of which were attached several bottles, for collecting the carbon oils, and washing and measuring the gas, I observed .that there was a very great gain in the weight of coke thus made, over that obtained from the same coal when charred in a platinum crucible, as is usual in the laboratory for making the proximate analysis of coal. It was thought at the time that the increase of coke, by the former mode of treating the coal, was due to the pressure which the retarded gas exerted upon the solid carbon, and the possible fixing of a portion of the carbon from the volatile hydrocarbons. For the purpose of obtaining a more definite idea of the effects of pressure on the coking of coals, a series of experiments were made this spring under my direction, by my assistant, Dr. G. M. THE making of courses of study and curricula has long held first place as the favorite pastime of educators. As a game, this activity is as fascinating to some as golf or bridge, 'and the golfer's hope of a low score is matched by the teacher's ambition to some day evolve a sequence of studies that shall prove the ideal preparation for a life of maximum service and, profit. There are few in, this gathering who have not tried their skill at this game and still fewer are those who have been long satisfied by the product of their efforts. A curriculum is hardly printed in the college catalog before conditions arise which seem to make changes desirable, and strong will power is needed to maintain the program long enough to give it a fair trial. Metallurgical curricula are not less subject to change than others, 'and; indeed they have seemed, at times, to change more rapidly than other curricula because of the changing 'needs of the industries and the demand that the graduate be trained to meet the new conditions. Metallurgical practice is constantly proving that "time makes ancient good uncouth," and the graduate metallurgist is required to adapt himself to newer and

BRADLEY STOUGHTON, New York, N. Y.:-I would like to ask Mr. Krejci whether they have tried mixing coke dust with the lime in those converters and, if so, if any advantage has been found. It has been a very great advantage in the steel converters where coke dust has been mixed with the lime near the tuyeres. Of course the agent that causes the corrosion at that point is oxide of iron, and coke seems to prevent the formation of the oxide of iron and so protect the tuyeres. It would be interesting to know if it had the same effect in the copper converters. MILO W. KREJCI:-We have never tried it here. At Anaconda the tuyere section was formerly put in by mixing magnesite with tar and ramming that into the tuyere section, but they have abandoned that. Might I ask how you would apply the coke dust? How get it into the tuyere section ? How hold it there ? BRADLEY STOUGHTON :-The coke dust is mixed with silica and clay and then rammed in and burned. I suppose in your converters it would be mixed with the magnetite or magnesite and then agglomerated with the material in place. MILO W. KREJCI:-We never tried it here. PROF. JOSEPH W. RICHARDS, South Bethlehem, Pa.:-I would like to ask how thick this deposit of magnetite is on the lining. How thick a layer would be practical ? MILO W. KREJCI:-About 21 in. would be sufficient. SOLOMON LE FEVRE, Mineville, N. Y.:-I was interested to hear of the use of magnetite in connection with the copper smelter. I am interested in the mining of magnetite, but was not aware that it had been used at all' by the copper metallurgists.

H. A. MEGRAW, New York, N.,Y.-One interesting thing that might be brought out in this connection is the cost of making sulphide gas. I had a communication the other day which suggested that, in view of the high cost of oil, sulphur and sodium sulphide, we might make use of a well-known chemical reaction to form this sulphide gas by the use of aluminum sulphide. It is difficult to see any advantage in this, however, since aluminum has been affected just as much as any other commodity by the rise in prices, due, to war conditions. RUDOLF GAHL, Miami, Ariz. (communication td the Secretary*) Mr. Callow refers to my paper, History of Flotation at Inspiration, which was presented at the Arizona meeting of the Institute. These notes of Mr. Callow's contain much valuable information on flotation practice, as is to be expected from an article written by an author of Mr. Callow's experience in this branch of metallurgy. Nevertheless, I cannot help contradicting a number of the statements made in the references to my paper. In passing, I will also say a word about the reference in Mr. Callow's paper to the article by Messrs. Laist and Wiggin entitled "Flotation Concentration at Anaconda, Mont." Mr. Callow calls attention to the fact that evidently Callow flotation machines are not very sensitive, inasmuch as one man per shift handles four 800-ton sections of Callow machines or 3,200 tons per day at the Inspiration plant. While-it has been the experience of the Inspiration company that the four sections of Callow machines in the Inspiration concentrator are easily handled by one American operator per shift, it is only fair to state that each man operating four sections is assisted by two Mexican helpers who constantly clean the bottoms of the machines. The tonnage per section, by the way, whether equipped with Callow,, Inspiration or Minerals Separation machines, is considerably in excess 4 800 tons.. Mr. Callow further says that local opinion at Inspiration is that, two 800-ton sections consisting of two 10-compartment and four 6-compartment Minerals Separation machines (these machines are of the Hebbard type) is the limit that one man can properly attend. I do not hesitate to say that I consider it perfectly feasible to have four such sections operated by one man, perhaps assisted by "one helper. The Minerals Separation machines of this type have undoubtedly an advantage as far as easiness of operation is concerned,

New discoveries of gas in the southern counties featured the petroleum industry in West Virginia during 194;. Drilling for oil increased slightly over 1944 and a small increase of initial production resulted. Out of 28 wildcats drilled, there were 16 gas discoveries and 12 dry holes. No commercial oil was found in the 28 wells.

The world's largest steam-driven mine hoist, built by Nordberg Manufacturing Co. a half century ago, has become a major tourist attraction in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The hoist, designed by company founder Bruno V. Nordberg, is located in the Quincy Mine Number Two, just north of Hancock. Nordberg began construction of the mammoth machine before World War I, but delayed completion until after the war. The hoist became operational in 1920 and continued running until the mine was shut down in 1931.

The Banner mining district is about 70 miles northeast of Tucson in the southern part of Gila County, Arizona. Production from the district, valued at about $26 million, is chiefly from copper-silver-lead zinc ores. The stratigraphic section consists of Precambrian conglomerates, quartzites, dolomites, and limestones, Cambrian quartzites; Devonian limestones; dolomites, and shales; Mississippian limestones; Pennsylvanian limestones and shales; and Cretaceous volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Deformation of these rocks presumably started near the end of the Cretaceous, and extended into the late Tertiary. The sedimentary rocks were folded, faulted, and intruded by fine grained diorite, quartz mica diorite, and dacite porphyry. At least four distinct stages of mineralization are recognized. In the first stage of contact metamorphism and the second stage of hydrothermal alteration, favorable zones were prepared for ore deposition. Metallization occurred in three of the mineralizing stages. Magnetite, pyrite, and hematite were deposited near the end of the second stage of hydrothermal alteration. The third stage included the main deposition of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, bornite, and galena. In the fourth and final stage, minor amounts of sulfide minerals were deposited with a late anhydrite and quartz gangue. The ore deposits in the form of veins and veinlets, pipes, irregular massive replacements, and bedded replacements are localized by the extent and distribution of metamorphic and hydrothermal alteration, by the proximity to the intrusive contacts, and by the effects of structural development. Oxidized ores of copper, lead, and zinc constituted the principal production of the district prior to 1940, but, for the most part, supergene enrichment was of minor economic importance. The ore bodies of the district are in the mesothermal class of deposits, occurring as normal metasomatic replacement and vein types.

The process of cooling air by allowing it to expand and do work in an engine is well known, but the theory of obtaining cold air by free expansion without the aid of an engine operating with cutoff has been little discussed. (communication to the Secretary*): Professor Lodge takes issue with Mr. Crawford and myself on results obtained by the scorification-method of assay on " zinc-box precipitates," which we published in a paper on the subject in the publication named below.' In our work we found that the normal seorification-method, employing only test-lead and a very little borax-glass as a flux, gave results on cyanide precipitates which mere invariably very low, loss having taken place by slag-absorption and volatilization, as repeated slag-assays failed to bring up results similar to those obtained by other methods. Professor Lodge anil his students made a large number of what he terms " scorification-assays," but which, I would like to point out, have claim to that name only in that they are made in a scorifier, for the charge consists of test-lead, a very considerable quantity of borax-glass (10 grams), at times also of litharge and even charcoal, so that the assays are in reality crucible assays. A scorification-slag proper is an oxide-slag to all intents and purposes, while the slags made by Professor Lodge are borates, certainly acid-slags. It has been our experience since our paper, The Assay of Cyanide Precipitates, was published, that the nature of the assay slag in the crucible assay has a great influence on the result. A " basic " or oxide-slag invariably causes high slag-losses, while an " acid " slag gives very fair results on material containing much zinc. This has also been the experience of a mellknown cyanide chemist with whom I have corresponded on the subject, who found that acid crucible-slags gave good results on zinciferous material, but that the scorification-method, as ordinarily employed, gave high slag-losses. GERARD B. ROSENBLATT,* Salt Lake City, Utah (written discussion?). -Mr. Eschholz attacks this problem from what appears to me to be the proper angle. He does not limit his viewpoint to the attainment of ideal results under conditions approximating laboratory practice, but rather discusses actual commercial conditions that must be maintained in large-scale operations, where continuity of service without expert attendance is one of the prime considerations. I am of the opinion that Mr. Eschholz has not given sufficient consideration to the commercial possibilities of what he describes as System B, the use of low-tension a.-c. industrial or lighting circuits for supplying power to Cottrell treaters through the medium of a step-up transformer and a synchronously driven rectifier, without the use of motor-generators. It is true that, to date, few installations on a large scale have used this system, but I believe that when the conditions of power supply are suitable, and when proper precautions are taken, this system can be used successfully and to advantage. where at present it is considered necessary to use motor-generator sets. In the average commercial Cottrell installation of any size, the motor-generator set is used for two purposes: (1) To isolate the industrial supply circuit from the Cottrell circuit. (2) To. afford, an easily operated and smooth system of control for the Cottrell treater voltage With proper engineering, both of these objects can be accomplished without the use of motor-generator sets.

A survey and critical appraisal of published information about Young's modulus was originally made by the writer because of a complete lack of information about this very important quantity in works on. mechanics, physical metallurgy, physics, and other sciences. It was felt that a comprehensive summary of such information about Young's modulus might be of general interest and may suggest new problems or lines of attack on other problems that involve E. Hence this paper has been prepared even though it is only a review, with no new ideas or experimental data. The references are only those used in assembling the paper. No attempt was made to compile a complete bibliography on the subject of Young's modulus. CalculatioX oP YouNg's Modulus from Theoretical or Empirical CoNsidera-tions Many attempts have been made to compute E from theoretical considerations. The earliest calculations were probably those of Tomlenson (1883) and Souther-land (1891), but Fess'enden4',~ made extensive calculations a few years later and arrived at the relationship: £ = 78.TOw(i)* where V is the atomic volume. In 1923, Peczalski, working from the same standpoint but with more information available on atomic structure, arrived at an identical relationship, which he expressed as: where B is a constant of value about 8 . 107, p is density and mis atomic weight; the atomic volume, of course, being ml p. Portevind4 immediately pointcd out that while the equations of Fessenden and Peczalski were true of the common metals, they gave low values for the refractory metals with high moduli (Fig. I). He showed (Fig. 2) that much better concordance was obtained by means of an empirical equation of the form: F- KT" where K is a constant; T the absolute melting point; V, atomic volume, and a and b constants of value approximately I and 2 respectively. This constant K in the Portevin equation is not necessarily the same for all elements, as shown by Thompson. Other equations for E based upon theoretical considerations have been derived by Honda and Yamada49 and Lasareff.50 The most recent calculations of elastic moduli based upon quantum mechanics are probably those of Fuchs He extended the method of Wigner and Seitz for calculating the lattice energy and compressibility of monovalent metals and computed the elastic constants of lithium, 18

The history, geology, ore deposits and current mining operations of the Huitzuco district have been described by C. W. Vaupelll and the current mill operations by David Segura.2 This paper completes the story of Huitzuco with a description of the reduction of the flotation concentrates. The predominant ore mineral in the Huitzuco deposit is livingstonite, a rare, mercury-antimony sulphide (HgS.2Sb2S3). Other associated minerals include cinnabar, stibnite and elemental sulphur. The gangue is largely limestone and gypsum. Former operators mined a selected grade of ore, from which the mercury was recovered by an expensive, inefficient operation. A considerable tonnage of rejects and fills, carrying mercury and antimony, was left in the mine. In order to recover both mercury and antimony from these fills and also from newly developed ore, a combination method has been developed, by means of which the livingstonite is concentrated by flotation and the flotation concentrates subsequently reduced to metallic mercury and antimony. An essential part of the flotation treatment, as developed by Segura, is the use of copper sulphate as an activating agent. A typical analysis of concentrates now being produced at the property is as follows: Hg, 7.73 per cent; Sb, 26.40; Fe, 1.20; S, 29.68; CaO, 11.50; MgO, 7.25; SiOz, 1.63; A1203, 0.65. PRocess foR Treatment op Concentrates In the development of a process for treatment of these concentrates, three different methods were investigated: (1) roasting in a Dwight-Lloyd sintering machine with an excess of air; (2) separation of mercury and antimony by distillation in a reducing atmosphere; (3) a third method, which ultimately developed into the present process. The third method involved a slow calcination at a closely regulated temperature with a limited admission of air, which separated the mercury and antimony, the raeroury passing out of the kiln with the furnace gases and the antimony remaining in the calcine or "sinter."

Cornwall, Pa. magnetite ore, containing recoverable sulfides in the form of chalcopyrite and pyrite, has been mined continuously since 1742 1 Beneficiation of the ore was begun in 1905, at the Lebanon concentrator located six miles from the mine. At first, only magnetite was recovered, using Grondal magnetic separators. In 1907, copper minerals were recovered by means of Wilfley tables. Copper flotation, attempted as early as 1912, was finally successful in 1919. In 1940, flotation of the cobalt- bearing pyrite was begun, and Cornwall ore became the major domestic source of cobait for many years. In 1916, the Bethlehem Steel Corp. began to purchase interests in the Cornwall mine and Lebanon concentrator properties, and by 1926 had acquired complete ownership. Metallurgical practice at the old Lebanon concentrator was good, but by today's standards the plant was outdated. The flowsheet was complex, due both to the mineral content of the ore and to the low capacities of much of the equipment. As the flowsheet developed, buildings were added and the plant was spread over a relatively large area, with resulting high manpower requirements. Another disadvantage was the six-mile rail haul from the mine to the Lebanon concentrator.

VIRTUALLY every year inventors find one or more startling new uses for one of the varied products of the nonmetallic mineral industries. For example, in November a major step toward positive control of rainfall was made when an experimenter converted a cloud to snow by dropping a few pounds of solid carbon dioxide into it. Other examples of ingenuity in the development of markets and production methods are noted in the following pages. For most of the industrial mineral products one of the outstanding features of 1946 has been the high level of production. There are exceptions, such as quartz crystal and lithium, whose production capacity during the war outgrew current peacetime needs, but they are few. Some technical men point out that this prosperity is not an unmixed blessing to technologic progress, because so much effort must go into day-to-day production problems that relatively little opportunity is left for the pursuit of new developments.

CUBA differs considerably from the other Greater Antilles in many geologic fundamentals. Cuba is geosynclinals; whereas Jamaica, Hispaniola. (Haiti), and Puerto Rico are geoanticlinal. (Scliuchert, Chas., Historical Geology of the Antillian. Caribbean Region, p. 13, 1935.) Rocks of lowermost Cretaceous age exist in large volume in Cuba, where- as they are generally absent in the other islands. Since many of the surface indications of petroleum are intimately associated with lowermost Cretaceous rocks, the Vinales limestone,, this difference is most important. SMITH, Waterbury, Conn.-I would like to ask whether small amounts of iron give the maximum resistance at a low temperature, and if the large amounts of iron raise the temperature at which the maximum resistance occurs? That is, with a small amount of iron, will a maximum be at, say, 10°? F. E. BASH.-With the small amount of iron, the maximum is at a lower temperature, and with the increase of iron, the maximum increases; it seems to come to a maximum and then decrease; that is, increasing the iron up to a certain value increases the temperature at which there is a maximum of resistance, and any increase of iron beyond that value will start decreasing this temperature. With 2 per cent. of iron, the maximum is lower than for 1.5 per cent. which was the value that we found to be satisfactory. F. L. DRIVER,* Jr., Harrison, N. J.-I would like to ask what chance there is of the instrument companies getting together and deciding on standards for both manganin and constantan? We make both of these alloys in this country and we find that each one of the instrument com-panies who buy these materials require different standards of specific electrical resistance and thermal e.m.f. For instance, some of our cus-tomers require an electrical resistance in manganin or therlo of 240 ohms per circular mil foot and others require it with a specific electrical resist-ance of 270 ohms per circular mil foot. They buy these alloys in relatively small quantities so that it means much extra melting and supervision when making up small quantities for each consumer. If something could be. clone to eliminate this, it would be a benefit to the instrument com-panies, who could secure their material more cheaply, and to the manu-facturers, who would not have to spend so much time and effort in special manufacturing.

HAVING told you about steel in the previous chapter, it seems to me necessary to speak here of brass for the same reason, for it bears the same relation to copper that steel does to iron.
