"The major platinum producers in South Africa make use of electric furnaces for the melting of PGM bearing nickel - copper concentrates. To gain better understanding of the furnace operation, research was conducted at CSIRO Minerals in Melbourne, Australia. One aspect of the research project was the investigation of the factors affecting the electrical conductivity of melter type slags.Electrical conduction in slags can occur through two mechanisms: ionic and electronic. There is good understanding of the ionic mechanism. In slags containing high levels of iron, the dominant mechanism is electronic. There is limited understanding of the electronic mechanism and one of the aims of the research was to investigate this mechanism further.Experimental work was carried out on Al2O3.CaO.FeOx.MgO.SiO2 slags similar in composition to the melter slags. Conductivity increased significantly with iron oxide content. Above 20wt% FeOx, electronic conduction was significant and the conductivity varied with the oxidation state of the slag. As the iron oxide content was increased further, the electronic mechanism became more dominant. The conductivity reached a maximum at around pO2 = 10-7 to 10-4 atm., although this value was dependent on the total iron oxide content and basicity of the slag."

Crystalline silicon solar cells are the most important solar cells manufactured today. This will most probably remain the situation the next decade. The future silicon feedstock is most likely not reject from the production of electronic-grade silicon. There will probably be a more direct solar-grade silicon route, excluding the electronic-grade silicon "detour". Estimated global solar energy demand in 2001 required approximately 5,500 tons of silicon feedstock. This required 65,000 tons of quartz. If the trend continues, the solar energy demand in 2010 would require approximately 30,000 tons of silicon feedstock and 350,000 tons of quartz, although the need for quartz probably will be lower than this. Quartzite has been regarded as the most suitable primary raw material used in the silicon solar cell production chain. This may change as the raw material requirements for the production of metallurgical-grade silicon are most likely to change. In addition, quartz or other silica-containing minerals from other rocks may be of a higher purity or contain lesser amounts of the most harmful elements. This favours increased beneficiation of primary raw materials in the future solar silicon feedstock production chain.

"The current research study addresses a physical separation process of basic oxygen furnace slag “BOF-Slag” (also called Linz-Donawitz “LD” slag) for the removal of phosphorous. In order to recycle the LD-Slag into the steelmaking process, the physical dephosphorization methods are considered. The systematic geometallurgical investigation carried out on particle classes of decreasing size, which were further subdivided into susceptibility classes, shows intimate intergrowth beyond 40 µm due to slag´s fast cooling rate. Generally, LD-slag is constituted of oxide and silicate phases, among which di-calcium silicate “C2S” dominates. About 0.5 mass% of phosphorous was detected in the LD- slag, which is exclusively situated in the lattice of the C2S. The comparatively high grinding resistance (Rittinger index 12.9 cm²/J) of the LD-slag reflects the energy demand to liberate the phosphorous carrying phase from the iron containing minerals, while separation efficiency decreases in the very fine particle size range. Hence, the conversion of the phase intergrowth pattern was considered alternatively to re-build the mineral phase structure of the material to a separable interlock pattern. Carbon dioxide, as the most convenient substance in the steelmaking plants, was applied to digest the C2S in the presence of water and to reduce the basicity of the slag slurry. As a result of C2S-CO2 chemical reaction, calcite and calcium silicate are precipitated at the surface of the oxide particles and carried between 25% and 75% of the total phosphorous, respectively. Accordingly, the mobility of the phosphorous content phase to the top of the grains serves the possibility to separate the precipitated layer by mechanical attrition process. This paper is focused on the impact of the intergrowth pattern alteration on the slag´s separability characteristics. Moreover, the operating conditions of the carbonization process, such as temperature and pressure, on the deconstruction kinetics of the C2S and the generated products will be considered. INTRODUCTION The steelmaking BOF-Slag is a stony aggregate waste from the steel manufacturing process. The investigated slag by the current research work was provided by voestalpine steelmaking plant in Linz, Austria. The current legislative situation in Austria restricts the historical application of slag as construction material, due to the high level of heavy metals content and corresponded land-filling and transportation costs of slag, therefore the demand for recycling of BOF-Slag to the steelmaking process has raised, as an alternative application. Statistically, voestalpine steelmaking plant produces about 130 kg BOF-Slag per ton of final steel product, which serves annual BOF-Slag production of 700,000 ton, approximately."

This article reviews factors of preg-robbing effect, occurring in the course of pressure oxidation of ore and concentrates, containing chloride compounds and so-called 'organic carbon'. The article also summarizes the main results of the studies and testwork conducted to overcome this effect. The following efficient preg-robbing mitigation methods have been noted: higher temperature of pressure oxidation process, preliminary removal of natural carbonaceous material from concentrate, chloride removal prior to concentrate pressure oxidation, and addition of water-soluble organic blanking agents, which suppress the adsorption activity of the native ore adsorbents. The aim of the research was to study the thermodynamic characteristics of high-temperature processing of ilmenite concentrate deposits "Central" in a neutral and oxidizing atmosphere, as well as its interaction with alkaline additives. The research was conducted using a scanning colonoscopy on thermogravimetrical analyzer NETZSCH STA 449 F3. A sample of the test material weighing 10 mg was placed in a crucible and heated at a rate of 10 °C/min to 1200 °C in argon or air. Studies have been conducted pure ilmenite concentrate and its mixtures with 5 % and 12.5% of sodium carbonate. The results of the analysis of the thermogravimetric curves it was found that the recovery of the concentrate carbon will come from ulvospinel, not pseudobrookite, and the reaction recovery is possible at temperatures above 900°C. While removing produced in the decay ilmenorutile of iron oxides in an inactive form, for example, iron (III) oxide, it is possible to reduce the quantity of the solution of ilmenite formed during the restoration of the melt anosovite. The analysis of data obtained during heating of ilmenite concentrate with sodium carbonate in concentrations of 5 and 12.5% transition pseudobrookite in ulvospinel is missing, it just breaks down into hematite and titanium oxide, which, in turn, react with N?2??3. It should be noted that increasing the concentration of sodium carbonate in the sample contributes to more complete interaction of iron oxides and N?2??3 with formation of ferrites of sodium. This can ensure full recovery of iron oxides in the concentrate, which is part of secondary ilmenite can not be dissolved in the melt formed by the lower oxides of titanium. In addition, the increase in the content of soda in the mixture significantly reduces the temperature of the initial melting point of the slag and facilitates the coagulation of metallic iron.The obtained results were used for laboratory studies of the solid-phase sintering of briquettes from ilmenite concentrate with additives of sodium carbonate and a reducing – coal, as well as for the development of technological mode of solid-phase sintering of the concentrate with the aim of obtaining product recovery with a titanium dioxide content of more than 75 %.

"The paper covers the design and implementation of an industrial dense medium cyclone plant for carbonaceous iron ore, the proving of efficiency as well as the development of a predictive model for plant control. The VA Erzberg GmbH mines about 12 Mio.t of carbonaceous rock ore at the “Steirische Erzberg”. Due to increased demand of the Austrian steel plants, the production of ore concentrate was raised by 30 % up to 3.0 Mio t/a during the last 5 years. One of the projects to realize the increase in capacity at improved concentrate quality was the implementation of a dense medium cyclone plant for the fine size fraction – 8 +1 mm replacing the former dry permanent magnetic drum separators. By physical separation the siderite variety “spateisenstein” (42% Fe) of a density of 3,8 g/cm³ is separated from ankerite (10 – 17% Fe), the second iron bearing carbonate with a density of 3,2 g/cm³, dolomite, calcite and silicate bearing schists. The feasibility of the process was proven by the test results obtained from a test rig, that was constructed and operated in close cooperation between the Chair of Mineral Processing, Montanuniversitaet Leoben and VA Erzberg GmbH. The density separation surpassed the efficiency of magnetic separation clearly shown by •- values. The plant performance tests (capacity 120 t/h) verify the cut densities defined by Tromp T50 -values and the assigned efficiency found in the pilot tests at varied settings of media density, pressure drop, cone angle and apex diameter. The test rig as well as the final process will be presented. In order to create a tool to predict the performance of the DMS in the centrifugal field at various settings for varying feed composition the experimental results from size and density testing are analyzed in a modified way to obtain physically justified, smooth approximations for the performance curves. Models developed on coal washing plants are checked for their validity at increased densities."

The jigging of ferrous ore to produce higher-grade products has been practiced for many decades. This is due to easy separation, a beneficial trade- off between operating cost and reduced yield relative to Dense Media Separation (DMS). Jigging becomes prominent for beneficiation of iron ores in the coarser size range. At present drive is towards the use of under bed air pulsed jigs for the beneficiation of ferrous ores. The main advantage is that the under bed air pulsed jigs are capable of generating the large pulse of amplitudes required to fluidize a deep bed of heavy ores particularly lump iron ore up to 40mm size. The major jig parameters effecting the jigging operation are bed height, shape of the pulse, residence time, operating pressure, valve cycle time and water flow rate. With the pulse shape set correctly for optimum stratification rate, even it is still necessary to provide enough residence time, to ensure the difficult material will take time to migrate to the expected layer in the bed. In order to find the Jig Stratification Index (JIS) parameters like bed height, operating pressure, water flow rate, cycle valve time and shape of the pulse were optimized first by conducting various tests. Typical Iron ore samples from Odisha (both lump and fines) were subjected to stratification studies at residence time of 1, 5 and 15 minutes. Jig Stratification Index (JSI) for both lump (0.30) and fines (0.20) were determined by using APIC Jig. The maximum possible JSI was calculated by using heavy liquid separation test (0.42 for lump and 0.24 for fines). It is found that the jig bed JSI is less than the Heavy liquid JSI for both lump and fines. The ratio of Jig bed JSI to the heavy liquid JSI is 0.83 for lump and 0.71 for fines. The JSI and ratio of Jig bed JSI to Heavy liquid JSI are low for fines due to fluid turbulences causing some degree of remixing in the jig bed. The fluid turbulences are more for fines than lump, hence jigging of fines is difficult and challenging. Artificial vision systems are increasingly used to assist humans to perform different tasks in different areas. These systems are able to recognize patterns in complex images, which can provide multiple data. Currently, vision systems are used in both; monitoring traffic - which uses radars for vehicular plate recognition- as in metallurgical and food industries for strict quality inspections. Their use in mining occurs in measuring the speed of froth over the lip of a cell, in determining the shape and size of pellets, in obtaining from the tendency of mineral content and as a replacement for laboratory analysis of particle size. With this advanced tool, it is possible to achieve significant improvements in quality, productivity, and especially in reducing costs in pelletizing plant of iron ore. The objective of this paper is to contemplate the current situation of image analysis in the pelleting plants and glimpse at the potential applications that are being developed. This paper also presents the conception and implementation of an automatic control system of the pellets size distribution applied on a pelletizing plant of iron ore. The article demonstrates the strategy used for measuring the size distribution of the iron ore pellets, based on image analysis and the strategy implemented on advanced process control, which shows substantial gain on plant performance.

"The paper presents the results of study of the sorption and flotation properties of the reagents of plant origin - tannin and natural extracts of the oak bark and stems of plants, with a view to their application as a low-cost environmentally friendly modifiers of iron sulfide flotation for the recovery of minerals containing precious metals. The technique of preparation of plant extracts with a fixed content of extractable tannins has been developed.The mechanism of flotation reaction of tannin extracts has been identified as based on their adsorption on the surface of pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite to form strong complexes with iron (III) at concentrations below micelle concentration. It has been found that adsorption of plant extracts occurs without displacement of primarily adsorbed xanthate, and preliminary adsorption of xanthate did not preclude fixation of tannin on the mineral surface.It has been shown that plant extracts having hydrophilizing properties at low concentrations could be applied as selective depressants for pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite in a weakly acidic, neutral or weakly alkaline medium. The use of plant modifiers could help to increase the quality of gold- and platinumcontaining concentrates and reduce the ecological impact on the environment."

"The article presents the results of the research aimed at development and testing of new effective reagents – collectors and green modifiers for more complete extraction of gold and platinum to concentrates at reduced loss with waste products. The main deposits of Au and PGM ores of Russia and abroad are presented by refractory raw material with the non-uniform finely-interspersed sulfide mineralization, submicron gold and platinum, the low metal content, non-uniform distribution of valuable minerals. and show low indicators of recovery. The main losses of precious metals (up to 15 %) at flotation are associated with thin slam tailings because of inefficiency of standard reagent modes.In the paper, the new trends in design of collecting agents for extraction of gold and PGM sulfide minerals and their application in flotation tests are substantiated. The original technique for obtaining the modified collector reagents – dithiocarbamate, dithiophoshpinate and dithiazine, incorporated non-ionic compounds that are able to generate stable complexes with gold and platinum has been developed. A novel class of collectors – cloud point polymers showed high flotation recovery of fine particles of gold and platinum. The original technique to create the mineral samples of natural sulfides with ""invisible"" or sub-micron gold on their surface designed helped to indicate the mechanism of selective adsorption of novel agents on Au and Pt-sulfide minerals. Extractive UV spectrophotometry, potential measurements, X-ray phase and spectral analysis, scanning electronic microscopy (SEAM), laser SIM and AFM microscopy were applied to analyze the adsorbed layer of modified reagents on the mineral surface. Selective hydrophobic covering on the surface of micro- and nanoparticles of noble metals provided an increase in their extraction during flotation. New reagent modes of modified collectors and green modifiers were tested in scaled-up laboratory flotation and the results obtained demonstrated the increased quality of the concentrates in terms of gold content by 1.5 times and higher gold recovery by 1.5-5%. "NPO RIVS employs complex approach to engineering and design of the new facilities in close cooperation of Mining, Research, Hydrometallurgy, Design, Construction, Power Supply, Automation, Production and other departments. General Design Contractor (and then General Contractor) is directly involved in geological exploration, engineering surveys, floatability studies, feasibility study of process solutions and construction options. It delivers greenfield project and guarantee its efficient performance in future. Shiralgin is a small gold and copper deposit, gold average grade is 4.7 g/t. RIVS departments have studied ore floatability, developed process procedures for design and performed pilot testing. Construction of integrated plant including ore crushing and grinding, flotation and hydrometallurgy units with Dore gold production of 5 000 thousand tons ore per year (66.7 t/h) is recognized as economically viable. The technology used of separate dry stockpiling of flotation tailings and cyanidation tailings. Water circuit for concentration and hydrometallurgy is separated, too. Process design was performed based on BIM software like Autodesk Revit, Civil 3D, Rocscience slide using process procedures developed by RIVS Research units. Engineers provided modeling of primary crushing unit, coarse ore storage, main building (including grinding, flotation, thickening, filtration, loading, hydrometallurgy), tailings thickening unit, building for reagent storage and conditioning, tailings pond for dry stockpiling of flotation tailings and cyanidation tailings, sedimentation ponds, laboratories, infrastructure including Administration building and camp. Payback period is 3.5 years. 3D model of facility is currently stored at the State Agency of Geology and Mineral Resources affiliated to the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic.INTRODUCTION The Kyrgyz Republic has substantial potential of mineral resources including gold ores. Mining industry actively develops and involves international investors. Inventory includes 42 deposits (Figure 1) that have reserves of 616.4 t [1] of gold. The Kyrgyz Republic takes the third place in gold mining among CIS countries after Russia and Uzbekistan by producing up to 20 t annually."

"The profitability of mining and metallurgical operations continues to lag behind that of other industries despite the technical advances that have occurred in recent years. A primary reason for poor performing in this economic sector is the lack of integration of mining and metallurgical information. The mine cut-off grade can be optimized if mining and metallurgical engineers have the data to optimize milling for the type of ore in hand.Integration of mine transactions, stockpile inventories, process flows and assays is the key to determining the economics for each blast strategy in a mining site. Real-time information from manufacturing assets greatly affects the profitability and flexibility of a company, but gross errors from faulty sensors, inaccurate instrument calibration, or incorrect process models may corrupt actionable information. New software tools can model the process, sift through available data to identify and eliminate gross errors, and use statistical data reconciliation to create materially balanced and consistent readings. The reconciled data is unified for use by both monitoring and decision making processes.Creating a real-time information environment where upgrade and change are allowed is becoming an accepted methodology to accelerate and simplify the integration of applications such as production monitoring, equipment performance management and yield and inventory management.This paper describes the data integration requirements in a mine, concentrator and port for unification of the redundant data. The capture of the mining events, stock pile management and the metallurgical information is the base requirements for a dynamic environment to reduce the overwhelming amount of information to unified set of information. Part of any decision support program should entail these results to continuously improve the measurement system to address the costs in mine and milling the ore."

"Different types of impact crushers use the physical effect of impact to crush rocks. The rocks can vary from soft to hard and from ductile to brittle but they should never be abrasive. Since the principles of impact crushing of larger rocks are hardly investigated these crushers are still sized rather by empirical than by scientific approaches.In order to investigate the principles of comminution by impact of large rocks a test rotor was developed and rocks of different dimensions were tested. The integrated measuring devices of the rotor enable the recording of impact forces and of absorbed impact energy with high resolution during the contact time.Since impact crushers stress the rock particles with a defined velocity the main crushing properties are gained as a function of the applied velocity and the particle size of the rock: likelihood of breakage, contact time, maximum crushing force, mass specific crushing work, surface related crushing ratio and crushed fragment shape distribution."

Optimisation and control of comminution, pelletization, and agglomeration processes is a complex task with large potential for gains in productivity, energy efficiency, and particle size distribution quality. One factor in realising these gains is the requirement for fully-automated online particle size distribution measurement. Moreover, online particle size distribution measurement that is based on the particles on the visible surface and can avoid or mitigate substantial errors that result from under-sizing overlapped particles and over-sizing areas of fines particles. Literature review indicates a body of substantially 2D photographic based particle size measurement systems that suffer from a large number of significant errors except in the simplest case of a monolayer of particles under good illumination with limited color variation in the material. In order to measure the visible particles on a pile there are a number of requirements including; avoiding particle delineation errors due to variation in material color and shadows, detect overlapping versus non-overlapping particles, and identify areas of fine particles as fines and not large rocks. Results are presented using a fully-automated online measurement system of crushed rock on conveyor belt using a 3D surface laser profile. The system provides continuous online measurement and results are shown on over four hours of production after the primary crusher. Size distribution results are calculated using volumetric estimation of the particles on the surface of the pile. The results show a strong capability to discriminate size variation especially in the 10% and 20% passing values. Furthermore results show that if areas of fines are misclassified as large rocks, and overlapped particles misclassified as small rocks, then a near complete loss of discrimination occurs for the P10 and P20 values which become largely constant values.

"Copper(II) can be recovered or removed from acidic copper sulfate solutions as cuprite or metallic copper powder by reduction with carbohydrates (van der Weijden et al., 2001, 2002). In order to make this process suitable for a commercial scale pipe reactor, process conditions and reactor configuration need to guarantee proper throughput of the dilute suspension. This is where crystal engineering also comes into view. Copper powder characteristics, such as size and shape of particles, influence the tendency to adhere to reactor walls and to agglomerate, which in turn influence the throughput. Furthermore, separation, drying, packaging and product quality, are dependent on the powder characteristics.In this paper the effect of both chemical and physical parameters on the shape and size of particles were systematically studied in a number of autoclave experiments. These parameters include mixing, Cu(II) concentration, pH, temperature, seeding, use of additives and reactor materials. Additionally, Monte Carlo simulations of copper growth inside a Kenics static mixer were made. Results show that the use of additives, and the use of static mixers influence particle characteristics the most."

"Over 50 mln.tonne is the average annual output of oxidized ferruginous quartzites typically containing Fe38-42% mined in Mikhailovskoye ore field. The most promising and cost-effective way to expand concentrate production maintaining current output of magnetite is processing of oxidized ferruginous quartzites (hereinafter referred to as OFQ) mined as a by-product in Mikhailovsky open pit mine. However lack of proven and efficient concentration and agglomeration process applicable to OFQ and insufficient data for feasibility evaluation of OFQ processing encumbered full-scale addressing of this challenge. Based on outcomes of multiple various studies a process of OFQ flotation was designed by MC Metalloinvest LLC and PJSC Mikhailovsky GOK engineers. Comparative lab-scale testwork have proven performance and production advantages of flotation against magnetic separation feat. flotation and combined concentration method. Lab-scale flotation enabled production of concentrate with average Fe66.6% and SiO22.06% grade. Geologic and production contouring of OFQ deposited in Mikhailovskoye ore field has been carried out to collect necessary data for feasibility study incl. cost and profit estimation. As a result processing and production properties of over 3,500 samples have been analyzed which is characteristic of every direction and level of prospective ore mining within Mikhailovskoye ore field up to year 2032. Following work has been done based on geologic and production contouring of OFQ: – natural typification of ores and production (processing) grades of OFQ, determination of average mineral composition; – correlation analysis of interrelation between OFQ mineral composition and processing features thereof for overall bulk of samples as well as for individual data blocks related to various directions of open pit mine; – OFQ classification with account of defined mineral composition and processing features. Total Fe weight content in chamber product of flotation (known as concentrating ability in flotation) was applied as a major differentiating factor for processing grade classification of OFQ. Three processing grades of oxidized ferruginous quartzites were established as a result of flotation tests run to determine concentrating ability, i.e. – hard concentrated OFQ (TO) – below Fe65%; – mean concentrated OFQ (SO) – Fe65-67%; – easy concentrated OFQ (LO) – over Fe67%. Outcome of this work provided initial data for feasibility study and cost-profit evaluation of medium-term industrial-scale processing of OFQ deposited in Mikhailovskoye ore field."

"Vermiculite is a naturally occurring mineral compound composed of shiny flakes, resembling mica. Worldwide, vermiculite has been used in various industries since 1920. When heated to a high temperature, flakes of vermiculite expand several times their original size. The expanded vermiculite is a lightweight, fire-resistant, absorbent, and odorless material. These properties allow vermiculite to be used to make numerous products, as an additive, for example to potting soil, in agricultural, construction, horticultural and industrial applications, including pesticides, insulation, potting mixes, brake pads, sound deadening materials, fire protection, paints, sealants, insulating concrete and etc. Over recent years researchers have been looking for effective economic and environmental methods and solutions for fine technological waste utilization. As a result of vermiculite ore processing large quantities of fine waste dust are formed. Until now there has been no application for this waste product. Currently this waste product is stockpiled using valuable land space, and is a potential contaminant. The paper presents the results of a study on the possibility to obtain briquettes from fine vermiculite by-product. The particle size distributions, chemical and mineralogical compositions of vermiculite were determined. It was established that consolidation of vermiculite dust by methods of briquetting and its consequent application in agriculture as meliorants for physico-chemical treatment, improves soils aeration structure and properties."

The Sydvaranger magnetite mine was shut down in 1996 due to low iron ore prices. It was reopened in 2009. The flowsheet has remained more or less as in the old plant, based upon two grinding steps followed by magnetic separation. The Sydvaranger magnetite is free of harmful elements and should therefore be sold on the high quality market. This requires a concentrate containing less than 2 % SiO2. In the old plant, this grade was achieved by amine flotation. Amine was preferred as collector because it could be used in process water from the sea. The use of amine has been restricted by the Norwegian pollution authorities during the time the mine was shut down. Test work to replace cationic with anionic flotation is therefore done. Research on activation of quartz with Ca or Mg ions prior to anionic flotation was shown by basic research in the period from 1960 to 1980 to be effective under simplified laboratory conditions. This old research has now been followed up from a practical/empirical point of view. The basic work was mainly done on quartz and iron minerals only. In this case, an actual feed containing a number of minerals common in iron ores is used, in order to demonstrate that a commercial process is possible. Calcium activation is shown to work excellently but requires too high pH to be environmentally and economically attractive. Magnesium activation is a more difficult process, because the maximum concentration of MgOH+, which was shown to be the activator, is about 100 times lower than the alternative CaOH+. Flotation success depends partly upon the ore, some amphibole minerals are more difficult to float than pure quartz. Ordinary batch flotation test work is time consuming. A South African microflotation test cell has shown promise, because work can be focused upon flotation of the more critical coarser fractions of the Sydvaranger ore. "The standard method of separation using flotation is compromised in terms of kinetics and efficiency, because of the generally slow separating differentials of fine bubbles and fine particle suspensions. A new flotation system has been developed that addresses these issues and imparts other benefits. The new technology is based on established pneumatic flotation designs called Imhoflot which use intensive in-line pre-aeration to aerate the flotation pulp prior to its introduction to the separating cell. Consequently the cell is designed only for the separation of the phases and not for bubble-particle contact. In the new system this separation is speeded up dramatically by the introduction of centrifugal motivation in the separating vessel, without the use of internal moving parts. The design focuses on providing increased differential forces on buoyant mineralised bubbles and hydrophilic fines. The observed result of these differential forces is the improvement of concentrate qualities by the reduction of the amount of misplaced material found in the froth. The commercial benefit to industry is much reduced residence time, less than 30 seconds, which offers considerable cost savings in equipment and infrastructure.Prototypes of 0.65m, 1.7m and 2.2m cell diameter size have been constructed for hydrodynamic and industrial scale tests to assess the previously established computational methods for scale up of the process. The 1.7m cell has been installed and operated for cleaning of potash concentrates in Germany, at throughputs of 150 m3/hr, with extremely encouraging results. A 2.2m cell has been installed and operated in plant trials for superfine coal in South Africa. Results are presented that illustrate the effects of differential separations by comparison with conventional pneumatic and mechanical flotation techniques. Predictions of performance are provided in the contexts of the applications tested."

Biohydrometallurgical studies were performed on the sulfide gold-arsenic concentrate obtained in treatment of refractory ore from a deposit located in northern Russia. Gold is disseminated in sulfides-arsenopyrite, pyrite and antimonite (their content is 10.0%, 30.4% and 0.7%, respectively). Gold extraction is only 11.8% by cyanidation. Results are given for test bacterial oxidation of the concentrate in continuous mode at temp. = 28~32°C using mesophilic bacteria and at temp. = 32~38°C using the association including moderate thermophilic bacteria. The paper shows that the use of moderate thermophilic bacteria allows to speed up sulfide biooxidation and reduce its time to 96 hours compared to leaching at temp. = 28~32°C for 110~120 hours. The optimal range of pH = 1.5~2.0 of biooxidation process was determined where bacterial solutions are produced with the molar ratio Fe:As > 3 necessary for precipitation of hard-to-solve, environmentally safe arsenical precipitates. Electron microscopy showed that sulfide biooxidation results in liberation of disseminated gold with nanoparticle-level sizes. High sorptive activity of carbonaceous matter and other compounds of bacterial residues cause low gold extraction into cyanide solution ? 28.7%. 10% resin load makes it possible to extract 88.1% Au. Aeration of pulp in calcareous medium enhances extraction to 95.7% and decreases cyanide consumption from 17kg/t to 8 kg/t.
