"The New Pascalis property is situated in Louvicourt and Pascalis townships, about 200 km east of Val d'Or, Quebec. It is made up of 38 claims under option to SOQUEM since August I, 1981 during which time SOQUEM has earned a 60% interest. The property is underlain by archean basaltic volcanics that have been intruded along the west boundary by the Bourlamaque batholith, and by north -trending dykes.The 1982 disco very is related to the re-evaluation of a 1931-gold showing located in the southeastern part of the property, a combination of the presence of a weak IP anomaly at the eastern end of the showing and overburden stripping at that location, resulted in the discovery of a mineralized diorite dyke.The dyke, which strikes N 20 ° Wand dips vertically , has intruded E-W striking agglomerates. The dyke contains south dipping, gold-hearing quart z-tourmaline-pyrite veins that are distributed in a ladder-type arrangement. Visible gold may he observed in drill core, and is generally associated with pyrite porphyroblasts.Diamond drilling has outlined th e dyke for a strike length of 300 11/ and a width of about 10 m, Result s of this drilling indicate, to a depth of 155 m, reserves of 834 000 metric tonnes grading 8.25 g Au/t un cut or 5.38 g Au/t cut to on e ounce. However, four deeper holes have added depth extension to 400m. Also, west of the dyke and within 150 m, other promising gold values have been intersected within quartz-tourmaline veins associated with other parallel dykes."

"Cable TV networks are extensively used throughout Canada for TV signal distribution. Mobile/portable radio communications are also used extensively throughout all sectors of industry. There are numerous manufacturer supplying these industries with a wide variety of equipment and accessories.IAL's underground radio communications system combines the techniques of cable TV and mobile radio to produce a flexible communications system with most of the advantages of both systems. Standard off-the-shelf mobile, portable, base-station and repeater equipment can be used. The equipment may need modification to be customized to particular end user requirements, but does not require a complete new unit redesign. Likewise, the cable TV distribution equipment is off the-shelf, with some items requiring modification for underground system application.Radio communications can be provided wherever the cable system is extended. Where traffic or type of activity warrants it, multiple radio channels can be provided on the same cable. Certain radio channels could also be used with data channels for control or supervision of remote equipment or environmental conditions. In addition, the same cable can be used to distribute or monitor signals from remote TV cameras in selected or dangerous areas. "The profitability of an underground mine depends to a great extent on the production cost.Random equipment failures and their consequences have significant influence on the total operating cost of a mining system. Having this in mind, a reliability study has been initiated for loadhaul- dump machines in an underground mine. The main purpose of this study is to identify the critical machine subsystems, determine their failure pattern and help work out an effective maintenance strategy. In the first part of this study, the failure data of diesel powered LHDs, gathered during an I8-month period have been analyzed. For the purpose of the analysis, the machines have been treated as systems comprising seven subsystems connected in series. The most critical subsystems, i.e. electrical and hydraulic, were further investigated, and analyzed by graphical and analytical methods. Different failure distribution models were applied and discussed. Basic Defmitions and ConceptsIn order to avoid confusion, several terms used in this paper are defined below, as compiled by O'Connor (1991). "Antimony in smelted copper anodes has been shown to cause problems in electrorefining including brittleness of starter sheets. In order to improve deposit properties, a study was conducted examining the effect of anode chemistry on cathode ductility and electrolyte chemistry. Two industrial anodes with different molar ratios of As/(Sb+Bi) were used in laboratory electrorefining experiments with commercial electrolyte, and the addition of commercial glue and Avitone. The ductility of 21-hr copper deposits was evaluated by a 180° bend test. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and metallography were performed on unbent specimens to characterize the deposit structure. Increasing the anode As/(Sb+Bi) molar ratio from 0.54 to 3.8 resulted in an increase, on average, from four to eight bends to failure in cathode material produced. Significantly lower concentration of antimony (V) in the electrolyte was detected when operating with the higher molar ratio anode. The presence of (111) and (200) planes was noted in cathode material produced from the higher molar ratio anode suggesting that mixed growth character could be responsible for the observed increase in bend test results. The ductility of the starter sheet materials was improved by a higher anode molar ratio.INTRODUCTIONThe presence of antimony in copper electrorefining electrolyte has been reported to cause problems in cathode production (Hiskey, 2012; Peng, Zheng & Chen, 2012; Wang, Chen, Zhou-Lan & Lian-Sheng, 2006; Wang, Chen, Zhou-Lan, Wang, Xiao & Zhang, 2010; Wang, Chen, Zhou-Lan, Wang, Xiao & Tang, 2011; Wesstrom, 2014). To better understand the impact of antimony, laboratory scale electrorefining experiments were conducted using industrial inputs (anodes, cathodes and electrolyte). The influences of anode chemistry on the valences of antimony and arsenic in the electrolyte were monitored and correlated to physical cathode characteristics, such as a bend test to failure and crystallographic orientation.Commercially, starter sheets are produced by electrorefining impure cast copper anodes onto titanium blanks. The starter sheets are then hung in an electrorefining or electrowinning cell using loops of bent starter sheet material. These loops, in the absence of sufficient ductility, fail resulting in cathodes falling into the electrolysis cells. It is thought that the reduction in ductility can be related to anode composition; in particular, the molar ratio of arsenic to antimony plus bismuth As/(Sb+Bi). It has been stated that maintaining this ratio above 2:1 results in numerous improvements to electrorefining operations (Baltazar, Claessens & Thiriar, 1987; Kamath, Mitra, Radhakrishnan & Shetty, 2003; Krusmark, Young & Faro, 1995; Noguchi, Itoh & Nakamura, 1995; Wenzl, 2008)."

As the demand for natural gas as a prime global energy source continues to grow, the search for new sources of the fuel spreads into geographical areas that are more remote from the marketplace. Along with this comes the need for longer and ever more efficient pipelines. This requirement for higher value in natural gas transportation is satisfied to a large extent through the application of high strength technology and innovative design approaches that support increased design and operating pressures. This paper reviews the latest accomplishments and successes in these technologies for use in gas transmission. It also explores some of the technologies which are targeted for the future to allow the industry to achieve even higher benchmarks in reliability and cost-effectiveness. The central element in the theme of high strength technology for gas pipelines is that of high strength steel. From tensile strengths of Grade 359 a few decades ago, more and more operators are now specifying Grade 550 linepipe for their large diameter projects. As well, Grade 690 steel is operating successfully in limited transmission applications and Grade 825 has recently been installed. With the introduction of the latest high strength pipe comes the need for high strength fittings. The industry's first Grade 550 fittings were recently specified and installed on a project with Grade 825 line pipe. High strength materials can only be implemented successfully if compatible design and construction processes are in place. The latest developments in strain- and reliability based design will be described as well as the corresponding advancements in welding and inspection technology.

"Tires, although not always the largest single cost item in open-pit mining operations, will place in the top three, along with explosives and fuel. How this high-cost supply is controlled is dependent upon on an efficient tire program. The success of this program is, in turn, dependent upon the people who are directly associated with tires and their use, namely: the mine's tire personnel, the tire sales representatives and a technician for the rubber company. The technician will relay his observations and information received from the mine personnel back to the manufacturer with recommendations to overcome current problems .Haulage truck tire life and costs in a hard rock open-pit mine are governed and controlled by four important factors:I) Field control.2) Operating within manufacturer's guidelines.3) Different tire purchasing methods.4) Scrap piles.Field ControlPerhaps the most influential people involved in this program are those who live with the tire through every hour of its lifespan: the truck driver, the shovel operator, the dozer operator, the grader operator and the shift boss. Of these, the truck driver has the most control, in that he can drive over or around rock s as these situations arise. The loading area, the edge of the haul road and the dump account for most of the tire injuries.This is why shovel, dozer and grader operators must appreciate their influence on haulage tire life. Spillage cleanup must be ongoing and is not being done adequately if any of these operators are idle. The shift boss that drives by a rock on the road without removing it or calling for a cleanup has little recourse with the truck driver who runs over it-he has sanctioned the driver's actions by his own neglect."

"IntroductionIndustrial applications of mica utilize two commercially important varieties of mica: muscovite and phlogopite. Muscovite mica is a potassium mica with a general chemical formula, H2KA1(Si04)3 h, and is sometimes referred to as a potas hsilicate. Phlogopite is a magnesium mica having a general chemical formula, H2KMgSi(Si04)3, and is distinguished from the muscovite mica by its decomposition in sulphuric acid.Canada is one of the major natural mica producers in the world. A large tonnage of the mica powders is at present mined and processed in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. This Canadian mica is of the phlogopite type. A closely related mineral of the mica family which is widely used in the construction industry is vermiculite. It is a dehydrated magnesium-aluminum-iron silicate characterized by a foliated structure. Expanded vermiculite, which is often referred to as exfoliated mica, is used as many types of thermal and acoustic insulation, as loose fill in buildings, as an aggregate in concrete, as an ingredient in plaster and insulating concrete , and in fire-proofing compositions. Natural phlogopite and muscovite mica powders are used extensively as reinforcing agents in organic polymers. They also have a wide range of applications in commerical products. For example, dry-ground mica powders are used in large tonnage as a surface finish in roofing materials and as a bonding agent in wallboard joint cement. Common products such as paint, rubber, plastics and welding rods contain mica. Recent studies have also shown that mica powders can be added to portland cement in the preparation of concrete products, as they could improve the tensile strength of the concrete products. "INTRODUCTIONThe Red Dog Project in Alaska is being developed by Cominco Alaska, a subsidiary of Corninco Ltd. of Canada, and the Nana Regional Corporation, one of the 12 native corporations created by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of1971.The State of Alaska is also a very key part of the project through its financing of the transportation system for Red Dog. Red Dog will be the third, and largest, of Cominco's Arctic mining developments in the past thirteen years, after the Black Angel Mine in Greenland, which started up in 1973, and the Polaris Mine in the Canadian Arctic, which began production six years ago in 1982.Red Dog is one of the world's great mineral deposits, with a unique combination of large size, high-grade, and a waste-to- ore ratio less than I: I, which will make it the world's largest, and one of the lowest cost zinc producers, when at full production. The present mineral reserve is estimated to be 85 million tons , at a grade of 17.1010 zinc, 5% lead, and 2.4 ounces per ton of silver. Based on the current production forecast, this will give a mine life of almost 50 years, and the deposit is still open in two directions, although the structure is becoming thinner at depth. As well, there is a satellite zone about one mile south of the main deposit which could contain up to another 8 million tons of mineral at Red Dog grades or better. This is not presently included in the reserve due to potential processing difficulties.In relation to other zinc deposits, Red Dog is the second largest ever discovered, smaller than the original Broken Hill deposit in Australia, but larger than Cominco's own Sullivan Mine in British Columbia, which is number three. It is quite possible that, when the area is adequately explored, Red Dog will be number one."

Many owners are also concerned with employee's well being and their company's public image.EmployeesJob security and a good income are probably still the most important demands, however, as time goes by, employees are also demanding more involvement in safety issues, working conditions, and even how work is done.The PublicThe public requires acceptable environmental standards, as well as enjoying the prosperity supplied by a successful operation.How are Mines Managed?Most mines are managed very traditionally. The basic credo is that the managers make the decisions, and the hourly, and junior salaried employees do what they are told. Clearly this is the extreme case, epitomized by the long service shift boss who might say ""It took twenty-years to become a shift boss, and no miner is going to tell me what to do"" .There are some exceptions, two notable ones being Campbell-Chibougamau, and T.G.S. (now Kidd Creek Mines) which, in very different circumstances, decided on a more participative style.Campbell-Chibougamau, having closed down due to unprofitable operations, reopened, using a team structure with working leaders, and a system for sharing gains against cost targets with employees. Although the system has some problems, and development miners are bonused conventionally, this has been a basically successful program.Texasgulf Sulphur, a company with a history of non-union operations, and a participative management style, made a corporate decision to operate their Kidd Creek Mine in the same way. The orebody was rich enough to allow them the luxury to do this, but they have never had a strike, so perhaps they have more than saved the cost of the benefits and salaries they needed to pay. They also reward employees with a stock distribution scheme based on service and earnings."

"Classification is an important aspect of mineral processing plants and if not operated efficiently can compromise both the throughput and recovery of the circuit. This paper discusses the benefits that can be obtained by operating the classification section efficiently. Since classification in most of the mineral processing plants is carried out using either hydrocyclones or screens the case studies involving the two classifiers were used in the discussion. Studies where optimising the classification circuit lead to improvements in the performance of the overall plant were included to show the benefits of paying attention to this area that is usually neglected. The data from the mill-float mill float, SABC, and Single Stage SAG mill circuit case studies have shown that the circuit throughput can be increased throughputs without compromising recoveries by optimising the classification circuit. On plants where the ore can be liberated at coarser sizes the experimental results have shown that replacing hydrocyclones with high frequency screens can lead to improved plant throughput with no detrimental effect on recovery. The discussion has included information on design and operational considerations for plants that have or intend to use hydrocyclones or screens that could make the classification circuit more efficient.INTRODUCTIONComminution is the process in which particles are reduced in size mainly by crushing and grinding. In most mineral processing circuits comminution is carried out to liberate the valuable minerals prior to subjecting the ore to a recovery process were values are concentrated or extracted (Mainza, Evertsson, Benzer, Tavares, Powell, Rule, Plint, …, 2013). Comminution is an energy intensive process and is usually achieved in stages. It is common to have a classifier after each comminution stage. The process is carried out in stages to minimize energy usage and to improve the efficiency of the process in meeting product specifications. Although comminution circuits have been advancing classification has remained a key component of the comminution circuit design (Mainza et al., 2013). Mainza et al. (2013) summarised the role of classification in mineral processing circuit as: to allow material in the equipment that can promote high operational efficiency, to improve material handling in the circuit, to minimize overgrinding of material to reduce energy consumption, and to provide the best quality product to enter the next stage of processing. Classification stages are employed in comminution circuits to ensure that high throughputs are processed without compromising the product quality or to produce a fine product at relatively low energy. If neglected classification can have detrimental effects on plant performance."

An understanding of groundwater flow is essential for many aspects of mining. This is especially true for the process of shaft sinking through the sandstones of the Manitou Falls Group in the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan. Experience has shown that the hydraulic conductivities of these sandstones can be relatively high, especially in zones containing natural fractures. To develop a better understanding of the inflow potential into a shaft, a laboratory testing program was undertaken to investigate the hydraulic conductivity of fracture core samples from the Manitou Falls Group. This program involved the measurement of hydraulic conductivities under steady-state flow conditions, while cycling the effective confining pressure across a span that is representative of in-situ conditions. The change in fracture aperture was simultaneously recorded at each confining stress level. It was found that existing relationships relating aperture and flow did not accurately capture the behavior of the samples tested. The effects of fracture staining and infilling were also investigated, and were found to have a notable impact on the hydraulic conductivity.

Roast-reduction smelting (RRS) of nickel concentrate, combined with flash smelting of copper concentrate, was one of the process options that Inco considered as a means of meeting its 1994 sulphur dioxide abatement target at its Copper Cliff operations. RRS involves deep roasting the nickel concentrate in fluid bed roasters. The roaster off-gas is treated in a sulphuric acid plant, and the low sulphur calcine is reduction smelted with coke in an electric furnace to yield a sulphur- deficient matte. The latter material is converted to Bessemer matte in Peirce-Smith converters, with minimal evolution of sulphur dioxide, and the converter slag is reverted to the electric furnace. Excellent nickel and cobalt recoveries (Ire obtained. "The Fox Mine has been producing copper/ zinc ore since 1970 at a rate of approximately one million tons per year, and until 1978all production was derived from longhole open stopes. In June 1978, a trial stope using bighole mining methods was started to eliminate the development of two sublevels between 400 level and surface. The trial proved to be successful, and bighole mining is now an accepted mining method for both stopes and pillars at Fox Mine.When production blasting was started in the first stope, the biggest problem encountered was the production of large amounts of sulphur dioxide gas as a result of secondary sulphide dust explosions. This gas generation resulted in lost production time and caused minor damage to underground installations to the blast level, and to the headframe. Sulphur dioxide generation has been noted in secondary drawpoint blasts and, on rare occasions, in drift rounds.This paper discusses the occurrence of the sulphur blasts and the practices and precautions used to prevent their reoccurrence at Fox Mine.IntroductionThe Fox minesite is located 30 miles southwest of Lynn Lake, Manitoba. IntroductionReduction of sulphur dioxide emissions has been a long-standing endeavour at Inco. At the company's Ontario Division, as shown in Figure 1, sulphur dioxide emissions were reduced from about 2 million to 685 000 tonnes per year over the period 1970-1985. Most of this impressive improvement was the result of a sustained research effort which led to increased rejection of pyrrhotite from the ore during milling while maintaining an acceptable nickel recovery. Between 1970 and 1985, the combined grade of the separate nickel and copper concentrates feeding the Copper Cliff Smelter increased from about 10070 to about 'lIJ0J0 Cu +Ni and the combined S/(CU +Ni) ratio decreased from about 2.8 to 1.65."

"INTRODUCTIONI have been asked to make available our method of determining the ""Live Inventory"" within a gravity type thickener. The ""Live Inventory"" being that tonnage compatible with the optimum underflow density that satisfies the process requirements.One prerequisite of the calculations is the proper determination of the final pumpable underflow density. A further requirement is that, prior to shutdown, the thickener has been operated properly, particularly that it has not been operated for storage capacity.Until recently I had few chances to check the method. However, I was most fortunate to have had a recent opportunity covering several months on a 300 ft diameter thickener at a plant in the U.S.A., wherein the method was tested and verified many times. The method proved accurate in that our calculated tonnage checked with the actual dried physical inventory of the drying facility.At the precise moment that the feed to the thickener was shut down, a per cent solid determination was made at the critical place and the tonnage in ""Live Inventory"" determined. Let us say that at the moment the thickener U' Flow solids was 20%. The thickener then was allowed to cperate until the U' Flow solids dropped below 20%, at which time the thickener was deemed to be relieved. Anything much less than 20% was not suitable to the subsequent centrifuge operation.Most large metallurgical thickeners have a configuration of three slopes at the thickener ""bed"". These slopes are dictated by the raking blades and are shown on the manufacturers' erection drawings. The first slope is from the outer periphery and generally takes up a distance of about 60% of the radius, the second slope generally taking up the remaining 40%. Within this 40% area, there is usually another slope taken up by the cone on ""B"" type thickeners or an actual steeper inner slope on ""C"" type thickeners."

The basic principles of systems analysis are presented. A model has been designed to determine the location of the Main opening in the presence of three or more stock orebodies. The necessary condition is to find a location for the Collection point which is an essential element in opening up each orebody (stock). The model takes into account the total transportation costs from each orebody to the collection point. Three variants are considered provided that the orefield is divided into two levels at least: - a collection point is designed at every level; - a collection point is designed at the lowest level, i.e. where the so-called concentration level is formed; - the collection point is located at a point between the planes of the two levels; The effect of the depth of mining and mine output on determining the method of opening up the orefield has been analyzed by considering a vertical and/or an inclined shaft. A function has been constructed which allows for investigating in both a static and dynamic regime the capital costs for constructing the whole complex including the shaft. The character of the function does not allow finding the global limits. Therefore, it is of particular importance to specify the limiting conditions. In this case these are the flow capacity of development openings and the shaft. The basic groups of cost and natural indicators for assessing and selecting an optimal technological solution have been systematized. The combined analysis of the two approaches to finding the location of the Main opening and determining the mining method enables us to determine when an inclined shaft is best, and the depth at which opening by a vertical shaft has no alternative. Thus, a transition area is formed for which the selection of an optimal technological solution requires an analysis similar to that proposed in this paper. Conclusions are finally drawn which serve as a basis for determining the areas of application of each opening, including the use of a combined scheme of mine opening. The approach presented can be used in both investigating the possibilities for opening up new orefields and reconstructing existing ones in cases when the mining operations go deeper.

To achieve renovation work without noise, the authors developed techniques of manufacturing pre-cut interior finishing components for renovation work. In this paper, to achieve the system of pre-cut interior finishing components, the authors describe a measuring method of reinforced-concrete structure by 3D laser scanner and then describe a method of making a design of pre-cut interior finishing components with the polygon model. Using these two methods, the steps of manufacturing pre-cut interior finishing components consist of the following four steps: First, measure the building shape using a 3D laser scanner. Secondly, integrate a point cloud data and retrieve the markings on the floor. Then, create a polygon model of the building based on the point cloud data. Lastly, make a drywall design using a polygon model. To evaluate the technique feasibility of manufacturing pre-cut interior finishing components, the authors have conducted an experiment of the finishing interior work of the drywall. Using pre-cut interior finishing components, the authors have been able to achieve interior finishing work without noise.

In this paper we describe a mathematical model of the magnetic field and magnetohydrodynamic processes simulation in aluminum reduction cells developed in St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University, Russia. The model includes: (a) calculation of the currents in the busbar system and inside the aluminum cell construction elements including cathode and anode structures, aluminum and electrolyte layers; (b) magnetic field simulation using the integral equation method; ( c) investigation of the magnetohydrodynamic characteristics on the basis of a shallow-water approach. The developed model was used to investigate operational characteristics of the different industrial aluminum cells. Calculated magnetic field distributions and MHD stability parameters were compared with the available experimental information; the comparison demonstrated a reasonably good agreement.
